I have always thought of the Democrat Party as the party of equality, human rights and fairness. We are advocates for the disadvantaged, the neglected, the ignored. We see the complexities of Americans’ lives and challenges. We believe in criminal justice reform and second chances, while Republicans fight to keep long mandatory-minimum sentences and implement proactive law enforcement measures.
Republicans see things differently from us, but a frightening transformation is under way. The GOP has branded the Democrats as the party of infanticide. Suddenly our economic ideas don’t matter; our history of standing up for civil rights and protecting access to health care are distant images in the rearview mirror of the Republican Party machine.
It's one thing to defend Roe v Wade as a matter of principal. It's quite another to call for laws that open up the concept of third trimester abortions to the idea of a medical emergency becoming less of an objective medical opinion, and more of a subjective emotional call. The USSC ruling on the subject is clear about late term abortions being legal only under the qualifications of saving the mother's life or substantial irreversible impairment of major body functions. This does not (and should not) include suggestions such as a third trimester abortion being approved because of mental health concerns (which could be little more than someone deciding at the last minute that they do not want to be a parent).
Democrats love polling people about Roe v Wade, and love the fact that most Americans do not want to have it overturned. Yet, much of this is based on the false impression that overturning Roe v Wade would effectively outlaw abortion, which it wouldn't. It would simply allow individual states to make their own laws regarding abortions, a concept that is actually fairly popular with Americans as a whole. On the specifics regarding the differences between your liberal pro-choice policies, and your more conservative safe and rare mainstream Republican view, the public comes down heavily on the side of the latter.
Pushing liberal abortion laws that open the Democratic Party up to charges of infanticide is a bad political move. But the race to the left for Democrats in 2019, especially for those individuals gearing up for 2020, does not include any u-turns on the subject of "choice".

first of all, all the right has been doing is quoting either the legislation itself, or the comments of supporters of it like governor COONMAN.

democrats have been lying about this since ted kennedy's famous rant during the bork confirmation hearings. at it is precisely why NY just passed it's own abortion legislation. asshole cuomo has been telling anyone who will listen that kavanaugh will outlaw abortion nationwide.
and that's a flaming fucking LIE.
here in NY we've just extended paid family leave to 10 weeks. i would be interested to see how the same leave request would be received for a woman who wanted to grieve an abortion.

The new green deal is probably a third issue that might have major consequences for Democrats in 2020.
If all you have is false charges of infanticide to replace MAGA you will face a landslide victory reminiscent of the New Deal.

Rights can be guaranteed by the national government.
your understanding of our rights and the mechanisms that exist to protect them is laughable. your view maps to 0linsky's, and both are spectacularly wrong.
Rights don't exist in a vacuum; they carry corollary responsibilities that fall on the citizens who enjoy those rights. That understanding is precisely why volunteerism has such a strong tradition in this country; we knew caring for our neighbor was our responsibility as citizens, not the government's.
But Obama, like many leftists before him, is unhappy with the constraints of our Constitution. He wants to turn voluntary responsibilities and moral obligations that citizens choose to undertake into so-called affirmative rights. That idea is sugarcoated as "what the government must do on your behalf." But that sort of thinking—that government should do it—is precisely what saps volunteerism and helps explain why both the Obamas' and the Bidens' charitable contributions are so pitiful.
It's also important to remember that if the government is doing something for one person—"redistributive change" as Obama wants, it must do something to someone else—which is exactly what our Constitution specifically precludes.
But even more radically undermining of the American idea is Obama's idea that government can create new "rights." If Obama believes government can create rights, then that means he thinks governments can also take them away.
Of course, this is at the heart of the two philosophies between which we are being asked to choose in this election. Do you think as our founders did that rights—including to your own property earned by your own labor—come from the inherent value of individual persons (not government) and must be protected from government? Or do you reject that foundational American idea and instead think rights can be manufactured (and removed) by government for whatever it deems to be the greater good? No less than the American Idea is at stake.

Tucker Carlson gets fact-checked, admits it’s nice to have smart person on show
Feb 9th 2019
An adviser to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on Friday night fact-checked Fox News’ Tucker Carlson to his face for peddling falsehoods about the Green New Deal being proposed by left-leaning Democrats.
Robert Hockett, a Cornell University law professor, explained how a claim repeated in the conservative media that the deal ― which aims to render fossil fuels obsolete by 2030 ― wanted to completely replace air travel with rail travel was incorrect.
Carlson noted that the deal proposes “building out high-speed rail at a scale where air travel would stop becoming necessary.” Hockett replied it was “apparently being misunderstood, right? We are really talking about expanding optionality here, we are not talking about getting rid of anything, right?”
“We are talking about basically making it cost-effective to move into more modern forms of technology, more modern forms of production, which would then enable people actually cost-effectively to transition to that stuff,” Hockett added. “We are not talking about requiring anything or prohibiting anything. That’s sort of 1980s-style environmentalism.”
Hockett explained how the aim was really to obtain carbon neutrality. “Then I’m glad, it’s nice to have a smart person on the show to explain this,” Carlson replied.

Trimesters Still Key to U.S. Abortion Views
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans' support for the legality of abortion varies sharply when they are asked to evaluate it on a trimester basis, which is consistent with the pattern Gallup has found for more than 20 years.
Six in 10 U.S. adults think abortion should generally be legal in the first three months of pregnancy.
However, support drops by about half, to 28%, for abortions conducted in the second three months...
...and by half again, to 13%, in the final three months.
https://news.gallup.com/poll/235469/trimesters-key-abortion-views.aspx
so, let's review -
NY and VA have passed abortion bills supported by only 13% of americans. VT is pushing to do the same.
who in their fucking right mind could possibly think that this legislation was necessary? and spare me the "life of the mother" bullshit. louisiana moved to add protections for the life of the mother, but democrats fought to retain their abattoirs.

Scott you used to be an honest and thoughtful person who saw that different opinions are just that, not the coldhearted truth.
More than 60 percent of Americans support the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that protects a woman's right to make her own health care decisions, in consultation with her doctor and in private. Only 13 percent support access to abortion after 21 weeks. This is largely based on conflicts over when "life" begins, making it of crucial importance that we have a standard defined by science and not by false rumors.
It's important for the public to know that only 1.3 percent of abortions in the United States occur after 21 weeks, and fewer than 1 percent after 24 weeks. It's not a procedure that's performed except in extraordinary circumstances.
The Supreme Court revisited the question of abortion in Planned Parenthood v. Casey in 1992. Because of that case, abortions can be permitted in the third trimester, but only for medical emergencies that threaten the life of the mother. The court defined "medical emergency" as: "...(t)hat condition, which, on the basis of the physician's good-faith clinical judgment, so complicates the medical condition of a pregnant woman so as to necessitate the immediate abortion of her pregnancy to avert her death, or for which a delay will create serious risk of substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function."
The uproar over late-term abortion rights was provoked by the statements, and then the actions, of Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam. His refusal to clarify his comments have left us to speculate about the horrors of the "new" law. The bill in question wouldn't have changed the number of weeks that a woman can have an abortion, only the number of doctors who need to sign off on the procedure.
In New York, lawmakers acted to update the law so that it would conform to Supreme Court rulings and ensure that women's rights are not abridged by state law.
I was personally lectured on-air by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee that [he] "thought Democrats believed in science. Biologically, it's not a part of a woman's body. If it was, it would have the exact same DNA of a woman, it would have the same blood type. It doesn't. It's a distinct human being from the moment of conception."
Huckabee's understanding of basic biology is clearly flawed, but, in the fast flow of a television interview, all I could get out was: "It's one that can't live on its own." If I had more time, a thoughtful discussion of the reasons a woman might have an abortion after 21 weeks would have ensued.
Only one person, Kermit Gosnell, was convicted of murdering three infants born alive during abortion procedures. Tens of thousands of doctors can tell you why late-pregnancy abortions occur and why they can be a terrible but necessary choice.
Abortion after 21 weeks is rare. And if our goal is to afford women their rights under the Constitution, and for abortion to be safe, legal and rare, then we must be more thoughtful and knowledgeable about the subject. Doctors should be given the microphone to discuss this, not politicians, religious zealots or untrained citizens.
President Trump, S.Scott Johnson and Republicans must stop the lies.

There's already a standard defined by science. And it is a lot earlier than 21 weeks.
And Huckabees's unstandering of basic biology is a lot more complete than Ms Tarlov's.
There's already a standard defined by science.

Accused murderer spared abortion charge thanks to Cuomo’s new law
Prosecutors initially included a charge of abortion against the Queens man arrested Friday in his pregnant girlfriend’s murder — but rescinded it because of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s new Reproductive Health Act.
Queens District Attorney Richard Brown sent out a press release saying Anthony Hobson, 48, would be charged with second-degree abortion as well as murder in Sunday’s fatal stabbing of Jennifer Irigoyen, 35.
But a DA spokeswoman later told The Post that the abortion charge “was repealed by the Legislature, and this is the law as it exists today.”
So a man could drop kick his pregnant girlfriend or wife causing the baby to miscarry and he get 30 days probation and a trip to the marriage counselor.
Mario Cuomo must be feeling particulary proud today.

You should have thought about that before making your idiotic claim....As to wasted time....getting you to back a statement up is exactly that.....you lied again and you are not a man enough to admit being wrong....Like .6%, 72% of Americans claim, and now this....you are just a quivering pile of dog shit without a fucking brain.....sad how you just had your head beaten square and you never raised your hands.....LOLOLOLOL

and how many of those 60 percent believe that overturning Roe v. Wade would make abortions "illegal"?
Meanwhile, while we are following the polls... why not side with the 87% who do not support access to abortions over 21 weeks?
Why would that be so difficult, Roger?
Personally I am pro-choice. I have no issues with the right to "choose" for the most part. As a parent, I would never consider it unless there was legitimate health concerns involved. Human life is too precious to be considered a matter of convenience or inconvenience.
Gee are high school text books on-line?
You should have thought about that before making your idiotic claim..
Well for one thing it's not an idiotic claim it's establisk commonly know scientific fact.b
You keep denying it makes you look like an idiot.
And that's OK with me.
Oh and LOLOLOLO 😉
Scott you used to be an honest and thoughtful person who saw that different opinions are just that, not the coldhearted truth.
Well Rog...
as an objective political observer, it's hard NOT to conclude that some of these proposed laws and passed laws will harm the Democrats with a majority of Americans (who actually like the idea that 1.3% of abortions are performed in the third trimester).
You cannot simultaneously argue the "only a small percent" argument, while simultaneously trying to pass laws that would by all accounts raise that percentage to a higher margin.
If you agree that 1.3% is a good thing, then you should maintain that we do everything in our power to keep it that low, not attempt to make it easier to bump that number up.
It's possible that these laws are portrayed by the Republicans as murder. There laws are not going to increase the 1.3% most likely because this procedure has been available in most cases, since Roe v Wade has been the law.
The President has been the first President to address this issue in the State of the union address. As usual he distorted how these laws are passed to assure the people of New York to guarantee the 1.3% or so will be available. He said that it is murder. It is not an attempt to make it easier to bump that number up. As a pro choice believer, you should criticize him for lying again. But you have never criticized him since he was sworn in to protect and defend the Constitution. He doesn't either care or understand his sworn duties to protect and defend the Constitution. He has been defending himself instead.
The women who need this to save their lives have to make the most difficult decisions in their lives and will probably have it in their minds forever.
41 million abortions in 2018 worldwide.
