2020 is going to be an ass thumping

The U.S. economy added far more jobs than expected in April as payrolls in the services sector grew by the most in more than two years, according to data released Wednesday by ADP and Moody’s Analytics.

Private payrolls grew by 275,000 last month, the biggest increase since July, when they expanded by 284,000. Economists polled by Dow Jones expected private payrolls growth of 177,000.

Services-providing jobs increased by 223,000 in April, led by a gain of 59,000 positions in professional and business services. Education and health services companies added 54,000 jobs while employment within the leisure and hospitality industry expanded by 53,000.

Goods-producing jobs — which include construction, manufacturing and mining — rose by 52,000, led by a 49,000 payrolls increase in construction. The economy added just 5,000 manufacturing jobs while mining employment declined by 2,000.

Overall, medium-sized businesses, those that employ 50 to 499 people, led the way in jobs creation last month by adding 145,000 jobs. Jobs within small businesses, meanwhile, increased by 77,000 while large companies hired 53,000.

So much for the Mueller letter being leaked.....

In the letter, special counsel Robert S. Mueller III wrote that Attorney General William P. Barr’s summary of the probe had sowed “public confusion about critical aspects of the results of our investigation.” The release of the letter came as Barr is testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

And then you are lost. He has eaten your soul Scott.

What happened to these people?

I don’t know for sure. People are complicated, so the answer is most likely complicated. But I have some idea from four months of working close to Mr. Trump and many more months of watching him shape others.

Amoral leaders have a way of revealing the character of those around them. Sometimes what they reveal is inspiring. For example, James Mattis, the former secretary of defense, resigned over principle, a concept so alien to Mr. Trump that it took days for the president to realize what had happened, before he could start lying about the man.

But more often, proximity to an amoral leader reveals something depressing. I think that’s at least part of what we’ve seen with Bill Barr and Rod Rosenstein. Accomplished people lacking inner strength can’t resist the compromises necessary to survive Mr. Trump and that adds up to something they will never recover from. It takes character like Mr. Mattis’s to avoid the damage, because Mr. Trump eats your soul in small bites.

It starts with your sitting silent while he lies, both in public and private, making you complicit by your silence. In meetings with him, his assertions about what “everyone thinks” and what is “obviously true” wash over you, unchallenged, as they did at our private dinner on Jan. 27, 2017, because he’s the president and he rarely stops talking. As a result, Mr. Trump pulls all of those present into a silent circle of assent.

Speaking rapid-fire with no spot for others to jump into the conversation, Mr. Trump makes everyone a co-conspirator to his preferred set of facts, or delusions. I have felt it — this president building with his words a web of alternative reality and busily wrapping it around all of us in the room.

I must have agreed that he had the largest inauguration crowd in history because I didn’t challenge that. Everyone must agree that he has been treated very unfairly. The web building never stops.

From the private circle of assent, it moves to public displays of personal fealty at places like cabinet meetings. While the entire world is watching, you do what everyone else around the table does — you talk about how amazing the leader is and what an honor it is to be associated with him.

Sure, you notice that Mr. Mattis never actually praises the president, always speaking instead of the honor of representing the men and women of our military. But he’s a special case, right? Former Marine general and all. No way the rest of us could get away with that. So you praise, while the world watches, and the web gets tighter.

Next comes Mr. Trump attacking institutions and values you hold dear — things you have always said must be protected and which you criticized past leaders for not supporting strongly enough. Yet you are silent. Because, after all, what are you supposed to say? He’s the president of the United States.

You feel this happening. It bothers you, at least to some extent. But his outrageous conduct convinces you that you simply must stay, to preserve and protect the people and institutions and values you hold dear. Along with Republican members of Congress, you tell yourself you are too important for this nation to lose, especially now.

You can’t say this out loud — maybe not even to your family — but in a time of emergency, with the nation led by a deeply unethical person, this will be your contribution, your personal sacrifice for America. You are smarter than Donald Trump, and you are playing a long game for your country, so you can pull it off where lesser leaders have failed and gotten fired by tweet.

Of course, to stay, you must be seen as on his team, so you make further compromises. You use his language, praise his leadership, tout his commitment to values.

And then you are lost. He has eaten your soul.

James Comey

At a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, ranking member Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) questioned Barr over whether Trump obstructed justice.

"You still have a situation where a president essentially tries to change the lawyer's account in order to prevent further criticism of himself," Feinstein said, referencing an episode detailed in Mueller's report involving former White House counsel Don McGahn.

"Well that's not a crime," Barr responded.

"So you can, in this situation, instruct someone to lie?" Feinstein asked.

Barr argued that Trump would have to be "impairing the evidence in a particular proceeding" for it to amount to obstruction of justice and suggested McGahn had taken note of Trump's requests to remove the special counsel to memorialize that the president was not explicitly asking for Mueller to be "fired."

"There is a distinction between saying to someone 'go fire him, go fire Mueller,' and saying 'have him removed based on conflict,' " Barr said. "They have different results."

The latter request, he asserted, would lead to another special counsel being appointed.

C.H. Truth said...

Like my previous post suggested (cause I am really smart - obviously)

The Democrats are focusing on the McGahn issue as it's really the only one of the ten items mentioned that could even be conceived to be real obstruction. There has already been three separate Democrats who brought it up.

But be careful what you wish for as Barr suggests that of the principle requirements of obstruction, it doesn't meet any of them.

1) Barr believes (or at least believes it's likely) that Trump felt he was telling the truth when he denies telling McGahn to fire Mueller. As it pertains to a "he said - she said" situation, the most important piece of information is that neither account actually suggests that Trump directly told McGahn to fire Mueller (or even have Rosenstein do it). McGahn is basically arguing that it was implied based on certain statements. You cannot prove with transcripts, and McGahn's opinion on implication would not meet the threshold of beyond reasonable doubt.

2) Barr also suggests that Trump was not attempting to tell McGahn to change his testimony, but rather that he just wanted Barr to dispute media reports. At the very least, that again is more than a plausible manner to see how this was playing out. There is no indication in the report (and Barr doesn't appear to have anything in other information provided) that shows that McGahn ever was told to go back and change his testimony.

3) Even if Trump had, it wouldn't be obstruction because he wouldn't be telling someone to provide "false" testimony... at least not in his mind.

At the end of the day, this is nothing more than Trump haters finding a "plausible story" that could (if we took their assumptions across the board) be considered obstruction. The only problem is that an "assumption" is not evidence and a plausible story is not "beyond reasonable doubt".

Kamala Harris stumps Barr with question on whether Trump suggested an investigation
by Daniel Chaitin

Attorney General William Barr took a few moments to "grapple" with the question of whether the White House has suggested that he open an investigation into anyone.

Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., asked Barr the question during his hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

"Has the president or anyone at the White House asked or suggested that you open an investigation of anyone?" Harris asked.

"Um, I wouldn't — I wouldn't — Um," Barr replied.

After Harris asked, "Yes or no?", Barr asked her to repeat, which she did.

"Um, the president or anybody else —," he said before trailing off again.

"Seems you would remember something like that and be able to tell us," Harris said.

"But I'm trying to grapple with the word 'suggest.' There have been discussions of matters out there that they have not asked me to open an investigation," Barr said. '

He has not looked into the underlying evidence in the Mueller report. Or he couldn't quite remember, speaking to the President or White House staff. I don't think that anyone would not be able to remember speaking to the President!

Harris offered: "Perhaps they've suggested." Barr dismissed the notion.

"Hinted?" Kamala asked. Barr said he didn't know.

"Inferred? You don't know? OK," Harris said before moving on to another topic. Barr tried to suggest something, but Harris shot him down, saying, "Sir, I'm asking a question."

He admitted that he has not read the entire report! How can he decide that his "baby" without reading the investigation!

Attorney General William Barr took a shot a Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team while testifying Wednesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, remarking that Mueller’s March letter was “a bit snitty” and “was probably written by one of his staff people.” In the letter, which was revealed in full shortly before the hearing began, Mueller complained that Barr’s memo “did not fully capture the context, nature, and substance of this office’s work and conclusions,” and that as a result, “There is now public confusion about critical aspects of the results of our investigation.” During the hearing, Barr additionally confirmed that someone memorialized notes of his call with Mueller shortly before Barr’s summary was released. “No,” the attorney general curtly replied when asked by Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) whether the committee can access those notes. “Why should you have them?”

The Honorable William P. Barr
Attorney General of the United States
Department of Justice
Washington, D.C.

Re: Report of the Special Counsel on the Investigation Into Russian Interference in the 2016 Presidential Election and Obstruction of Justice (March 2019)

Dear Attorney General Barr:

I previously sent you a letter dated March 25, 2019, that enclosed the introduction and executive summary for each volume of the Special Counsel's report marked with redactions to remove any information that potentially could be protected by Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 6(e); that concerned declination decisions; or that related to a charged case. We also had marked an additional two sentences for review and have now confirmed that these sentences can be released publicly.

Accordingly, the enclosed documents are in a form that can be released to the public consistent with legal requirements and Department policies. I am requesting that you provide these materials to Congress and authorize their public release at this time.

As we stated in our meeting of March 5 and reiterated to the Department early in the afternoon of March 24, the introductions and executive summaries of our two-volume report accurately summarize this Office's work and conclusions. The summary letter the Department sent to Congress and released to the public late in the afternoon of March 24 did not fully capture the context, nature, and substance of this Office's work and conclusions. We communicated that concern to the Department on the morning of March 25. There is now public confusion about critical aspects of the results of our investigation. This threatens to undermine a central purpose for which the Department appointed the Special Counsel: to assure full public confidence in the outcome of the investigations. See Department of Justice, Press Release (May 17, 2017).

While we understand that the Department is reviewing the full report to determine what is appropriate for public release — a process that our Office is working with you to complete — that process need not delay release of the enclosed materials. Release at this time would alleviate the misunderstandings that have arisen and would answer congressional and public questions about the nature and outcome of our investigation. It would also accord with the standard for public release of notifications to Congress cited in your letter. See 28 C.F.R. § 609(c) ("the Attorney General may determine that public release" of congressional notifications "would be in the public interest").

Sincerely yours,

Robert S. Mueller, III
Special Counsel

BWAAAAAA!!!! It's just the start of the next chapter of trump incompetence and his imperial presidency......Barr sure had trouble keeping a straight face with all his lies...

In back-to-back congressional hearings on April 9 and 10, Attorney General William P. Barr disclaimed knowledge of the thinking of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III and members of his team of prosecutors investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election.

“No, I don’t,” Barr said, when asked by Rep. Charlie Crist (D-Fla.) whether he knew what was behind reports that members of Mueller’s team were frustrated by the attorney general’s summary of their top-level conclusions.

“I don’t know,” he said the next day, when asked by Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) whether Mueller supported his finding that there was not sufficient evidence to conclude that President Trump had obstructed justice.

These statements resurfaced Tuesday following the revelation that Mueller had sent a letter to Barr two weeks earlier objecting to the attorney general’s characterization of the probe.

My question is in reaching your conclusion, did you personally review all of the underlying evidence?”

Barr admitted that he had not.

“We accepted the statements in the report as factual record. We did not go underneath it to see whether or not they were accurate. We accepted it as accurate.”

Barr said he had not, and neither had his deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, or anyone else in his office.

“And then to hear it again today, and sort of this parsing and finagling as the country’s sitting attorney general offers some defense of Donald Trump that really wasn’t rooted in anything legal,” she scoffed. “It was sort of this psychological examination of just how stressed the president must be. It was ridiculous.”

New e-mail evidence suggests that Nellie Ohr lied to Congress when she claimed she never shared her Russia research with anyone outside of Fusion GPS.
