WASHINGTON — America’s ailing coal industry was buoyed on Tuesday when the Environmental Protection Agency unveiled a proposal to relax pollution regulations on coal-fired power plants. President Trump traveled to West Virginia to tout the planned measure, telling supporters, “We’re putting our great coal miners back to work.”

Yet the reality on the ground for the nation’s coal industry remains bleak. Even the Trump administration’s own numbers suggest that its latest proposal won’t reverse the sharp decline of coal power, which has been crushed by competition from cheaper natural gas and renewable energy over the past decade.

More than 200 coal plants have shut down since 2010, and another 40 plants have announced they will close in the years ahead, with virtually no new coal plants being built today.

At best, if finalized, the E.P.A.’s newest rollback could help a small number of those endangered coal plants stave off retirement for a bit longer, albeit at the expense of increased air pollution. But even in that scenario, the agency’s own analysis showed, coal power would still decline by 20 percent between now and 2030 and coal mining would drop by one-third.

[The E.P.A. said the new rules could lead to as many as 1,400 more deaths a year.]

“This is like throwing a few snowballs into a blizzard,” said Tom Sanzillo, director of finance at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. “You might see a plant here or a plant there that benefits from the new rules. But we’re talking about very minor changes compared with the significant gap between the cost of coal and the cost of natural gas.”

what denny the dumb fuck fails to grasp from his article is that it illustrates very clearly how, left to its own devices, the free market and technological advancement handles an issue with relative efficiency.

so eventually coal is overtaken by natural gas.

really.

huh.

except in states like NY, where we are literally* sitting on trillions of cubic feet of the stuff but it stays in the ground because liberal politics.

and those same liberal politics demand affordable housing in westchester county, but the project had to be abandoned because... liberal politics. there's no way to get natural gas to the housing sites to warm the folks who might live in them.

there just isn't enough fairy dust and unicorn farts to go around.

so...

coal is chastised while nuclear plants are decommissioned and natural gas remains under our feet instead being exploited. brilliant.

Besides having the most expensive electricity west of the Mississippi River in the continental U.S., California already has the least reliable electricity. California easily leads the nation with nearly 470 power outages a year, compared to 160 for second place Texas, which is really amazing because Texas produces 125% MORE electricity! (here). California’s reliability problems will be multiplied as more wind and solar enter the power mix, intermittent resources located in remote areas that cannot be so easily transported to cities via the grid."

California was the fourth-largest producer of crude oil among the 50 states in 2017, after Texas, North Dakota, and Alaska, and, as of January 2018, third in oil refining capacity after Texas and Louisiana.

California is the largest consumer of jet fuel among the 50 states and accounted for one-fifth of the nation’s jet fuel consumption in 2016.

California's total energy consumption is second-highest in the nation, but, in 2016, the state's per capita energy consumption ranked 48th, due in part to its mild climate and its energy efficiency programs.

In 2017, California ranked second in the nation in conventional hydroelectric generation and first as a producer of electricity from solar, geothermal, and biomass resources.

In 2017, solar PV and solar thermal installations provided about 16% of California’s net electricity generation.

Only 16% comes from renewables. The rest from fossil fuels.

"“The bloody conflict has dragged on for too long. For us the Saudis, as well as for all the Gulf states, Egypt and Jordan, it is clear that the age of war with Israel has ended and that normalizing relations will only benefit us,” he said in interview published in Globes. “The entire Arab world can benefit from this, not only the Palestinians, and of course also [Israel].”

“History and Allah have brought a real opportunity to realize this,” he added.

He praised Israel’s technological prowess, saying that even those in the Arab world that “hate” Israel look to the Jewish state with “admiration over its success in [technology] and hopes to copy it.”

New Policy: Do Not Post In Support of Trump or his Administration
Sunday, June 23rd 2019

We are banning support of Donald Trump and his administration on Ravelry.

This includes support in the form of forum posts, projects, patterns, profiles, and all other content. Note that your project data will never be deleted. We will never delete your Ravelry project data for any reason and if a project needs to be removed from the site, we will make sure that you have access to your data. If you are permanently banned from Ravelry, you will still be able to access any patterns that you purchased. Also, we will make sure that you receive a copy of your data.

We cannot provide a space that is inclusive of all and also allow support for open white supremacy. Support of the Trump administration is undeniably support for white supremacy.

Policy notes:

You can still participate if you do in fact support the administration, you just can’t talk about it here.
We are not endorsing the Democrats nor banning Republicans.
We are definitely not banning conservative politics. Hate groups and intolerance are different from other types of political positions.
We are not banning people for past support.
Do not try to weaponize this policy by entrapping people who do support the Trump administration into voicing their support.
Similarly, antagonizing conservative members for their unstated positions is not acceptable.
You can help by flagging any of the following items if they constitute support for Trump or his administration:

Projects: Unacceptable projects will be provided to the member or made invisible to others.
Patterns: Unacceptable patterns will be returned to drafts.
Forum posts: right now, only posts written after Sunday, June 23rd at 8 AM Eastern
Profiles: Please do not flag profiles yet if the only banned content is an avatar or avatars. There is not yet a flagging system for those.
Much of this policy was first written by a roleplaying game site, not unlike Ravelry but for RPGs, named RPG.net. We thank them for their thoughtful work. For citations/references, see this post on RPG.net: https://forum.rpg.net/index.php?threads/new-ban-do-not-po...

Trump struggles to explain why Obama’s jobs numbers were better than his
The Independent Victoria Gagliardo-Silver,The Independent 20 hours ago

Donald Trump has repeatedly struggled to explain why the number of jobs created during his presidency compared unfavourably with the new employment figures under Barack Obama.

Presented with a chart which depicted the unemployment rate from the peak of the recession, the president was asked to account for slower rate of job creation since he entered the White House.

In the interview on NBC’s Meet the Press – after Mr Trump had claimed his economy was “great” – Chuck Todd said: “Your economy is great. I’m not saying it’s not great.

“But this recovery started and in the 28 months that you’ve been president and the last 28 months of Obama’s presidency, he averaged more new jobs than your first 28.”

Mr Trump initially responded by claiming that Mr Obama started with a “bad base”.

He was then asked if his jobs numbers were merely a continuation of those under his predecessor.

Mr Trump said: “Yeah, but Chuck, you have to understand, nobody was working. The whole place was a disaster. And I don’t – I’d never take that away.”

Mr Trump continued to attempt to explain, he said “But it’s very easy -- because when that turned around they pumped a tremendous amount of money into the economy.

“He also had a Federal Reserve person who kept the interest rates low. I don’t. I don’t have that privilege.”

Mr Todd retorted: “Sounds like you do now. Do you feel like you have sent the threat, your threat to demote him, do you think that’s had an impact?”

The president dismissed suggestions he had threatened to demote Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, which Mr Todd questioned, saying: “There’s been some talk that you might demote him to the number two slot.”

Mr Trump responded: “Well, I’d be able to do that if I wanted but I haven’t suggested that.

The United States is adding instead of losing manufacturing jobs, but factory hiring continues to slow.

U.S. factories hired 3,000 more workers in May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That's down from 4,000 in April and down from an average of 15,300 new manufacturing jobs per month last year.

"Manufacturing job growth is clearly slowing," Alliance for American Manufacturing President Scott Paul said. "Economic expansions don’t last forever, but there are policy interventions that can boost demand and support new factory job creation. Now would be a good time to get a $2 trillion infrastructure plan back on track, and to secure a meaningful trade deal with China to rebalance that relationship."

Dean Baker, a senior economist at the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington, D.C., said that job growth was slowing overall, with just 75,000 new jobs added in May, as compared to a three-month average of 151,000. That trend was particularly pronounced in manufacturing, one of the Region's largest sectors for employment.

"Manufacturing has been looking especially weak in recent months, as average hours have been dropping," Baker said. "The index of aggregate hours worked in manufacturing is at the same level as it was last August. Wage growth has also been exceptionally weak in manufacturing, with the average hourly wage up just 2.2% over the last year."

The slowdown in hiring does not bode well for wages, he said.

"This report provides serious grounds for concern about a weakening recovery," Baker said. "While there is little reason to believe that the economy is about to fall into a recession, the weaker job growth, coupled with the slowing of wage growth, indicate that the labor market is not nearly as tight as the 3.6% unemployment rate would indicate."

The United States has about 12.8 million manufacturing jobs, down from a peak of 19.5 million in 1979, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The United States has lost nearly 4.5 million manufacturing jobs since the year 2000, largely due to automating and outsourcing.
