Trump And RNC Raised $105 Million In Second Quarter

The campaign and the R.N.C. said they had a combined $100 million in cash on hand, and that they had raised more money online in the second quarter than in the first half of 2018. The staggering total figure can be plowed into television and digital advertising, get-out-the-vote efforts and other activities related to the 2020 election. President Trump and his committees raised $54 million, they said, and the R.N.C. raised $51 million.

Considering that the President is not currently in any sort of race (unlike the 20+ Democrats running in the primary), this is a pretty good haul. Now obviously there are other groups raising money. The Republicans will also have a Senate and a House committee that is raising money, not to mention that there are always PACs and other third Party money involved. So what is being done overall, might be more or less impressive than the President and the National Party.

Meanwhile, the Democrats are spending millions beating up on each other, and donations are spread out over many different candidates. Moreover, this is likely going to become more (not less) expensive for these candidates, and likely become more (not less) confrontational as the field narrows. This is one of those reasons why incumbents end up with a huge advantage. They are able to use all of the money that they earn on the opposition Party opponents, rather than attacking their own challengers.

Trump beat Hillary in 2016 spending approximately half of what she spent. At the rate he is going, he will not only double what he raised in 2016, but he will likely be well ahead of what Obama and Hillary raised in 2012 and 2016. That being said, I hear that he is working behind the scenes with Russia again, in hopes that they can spend an additional $100,000 or so in Facebook and twitter ads, so that he can once again guarantee his victory. No question that extra $100,000 in foreign social media spending will be the difference maker (again). And no, I cannot explain why $100,00 spent by Russia will that much more effective than the same $100,000 spent by Trump. It just will be. Ask any Democrat.
