You could see this coming a mile off!

GOP Rep. Francis Rooney, Who Is Open to Impeachment, Announces Retirement From Congress

Rep. Francis Rooney (R-Fla.), who was the first House Republican express openness to voting to impeach President Donald Trump, announced his retirement on Saturday. “I thought the idea was you came and did your public service and left, you accomplish what you want to accomplish and you left,” Rooney said on Fox News. “And that’s what I want to be an example to do. And I’m also tired of the intense partisanship that stops us from solving the big questions that America needs solved.”

So he makes a public statement about impeachment, and a couple days later he retires? To be clear, his ambiguous statement about not being able to "dismiss the possibility" that Trump might have committed an impeachable offense was not exactly the shocking endorsement that the Democrats and liberal media made it out to be. But either he had decided to retire and make a little noise on his way out, or he made a little noise and then decided that he would rather retire than face the idea of a primary challenge along with another general election campaign. Either way, the statement and retirement are clearly tied together.

The reality is that an overwhelming number of Republicans back the President on impeachment (upwards of 90% according to Quinnipiac and other pollsters) and very few favor it (under 10% according to NPR and others). More to the point, those who do are likely never-Trump Republicans who are coming back out of the shadows now that they see an opening. Bottom line is that any Republican up for reelection likely kisses their job goodbye if he or she sees a primary challenger who stands with Trump.

Many are also pointing out that Rooney has ties to the Bush family and was a big Jeb supporter in 2016. Most (if not all) Jeb supporters personally blame Trump for Jeb's failures. Most (if not all) think Trump was underhanded, dishonest, and just plain mean to poor Jeb. So it's not much of a surprise that he might hold some animosity towards the President. So neither the statement or retirement shocks me much anymore.

Meanwhile Romney is absolutely delighted that he is now free to say exactly what he thinks of Trump. He is convinced that future generations and historians will judge Republicans harshly for their craven cowardice in backing so obviously flawed and corrupt a President as the preening narcissist who now defiles the Oval Office.

See that and much more at politcalwire.com.
(Also, Chris Wallace gave Mulvaney hell in an interview.)

Rooney was already in trouble in his district.

He was angling for another ambassadorship and the seat was just a holding place until he got appointed but apparently Trump had no use for him.

But by that time he has already alienated half the voters in his district and not he's done alienating the other half.

He was going to lose his seat and nobody is sorry to see him go.

the left's sudden and hypocritical swooning over romney is hilarious to watch.

it wasn't very long ago the guy was a dog-abusing, cancer-causing, no-tax paying, misogynistic greedy multi-millionaire, but now he's the voice of clarity and reason standing up to the bully trump.

too bad he was too much of a loser and a coward to stand up to 0linsky.

POTSDAM, Germany (Reuters) - Germany’s attempt to create a multicultural society has “utterly failed,” Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday, adding fuel to a debate over immigration and Islam polarizing her conservative camp.

Speaking to a meeting of young members of her Christian Democrats (CDU), Merkel said allowing people of different cultural backgrounds to live side by side without integrating had not worked in a country that is home to some four million Muslims.

“This (multicultural) approach has failed, utterly failed,” Merkel told the meeting in Potsdam, south of Berlin

that's not what he said, alky.

he said - “The United States and Italy are bound together by a shared cultural and political heritage dating back thousands of years to Ancient Rome."

the reference was to western civilization -

But others came to Trump's defense, suggesting the president was in fact commenting on Roman cultural, political and legal traditions that imbue all modern Western nations and governments, including the U.S.

https://www.newsweek.com/historians-journalists-defend-donald-trump-president-mocked-ancient-rome-comments-italy-1465879

intelligent people were able to comprehend and interpret trump's remarks with no problem.

petty hacks with limited intellect seemed to have had a problem with it.

the true irony here is the extent that the left has gone to to eliminate the teaching of western civilization from our educational institutions...

n a scene that smacks of Monty Python’s 1979 classic The Life of Brian, a grassroots movement at Stanford University is forcing the public to ask, “Besides democracy, education, philosophy, logic, mathematics, engineering, literature, and theater, what has Western civilization ever done for us?” Leading the debate is the editorial board of the Stanford Review, an independent student-run newspaper, which has gained more than 370 signatures to meet the requirements for an undergraduate student-body vote, which began yesterday and continues through 11:59 a.m. (Pacific time) today. The question on the ballot: Should Stanford University restore to its Western Civilization requirement for undergraduates?

When the American campus environment is shaken with protests supporting the solipsistic flavor of the month, university leaders should look to the demand of these Stanford students, who seek an invigorating curriculum that values honest dialogue, toleration, and context as a model for 21st-century higher education.

The movement has reignited a decades-old debate over the value of studying a common Western culture. In the 1980s, under pressure from protesters – “Hey, hey! Ho! Ho! Western Civ has got to go!” – Stanford repealed its longstanding Western Civilization requirement. The aim was to institute a more “inclusive” curriculum that focused on multiculturalism, gender identity, and race. Engaged in the public debate were none other than Jesse Jackson and William Bennett, Ronald Reagan’s secretary of education.

In February the Stanford Review released its manifesto calling for the restoration of a Western Civilization course examining “the narratives and values that bind us: the polar opposite of ‘awareness and understanding of differences.’” Two weeks later, the editors reported on the backlash against the student signers, who were accused of racism, classism, hatred, etc.

https://www.nationalreview.com/2016/04/stanford-universitys-western-civilization-curriculum-restore-it/

we owe western civilization largely to a bunch of white guys. and that is, by modern parlance, inherently racist, sexist, bigoted, and otherwise just plain mean.

so i can see why you fell for this alky.

you're reliably liberal, which means, by today's standards, reliably ignorant.

Cicero was a renowned Roman orator, statesman and writer. He was an enemy of one man rule and a self-described constitutionalist. During the turbulent twilight of the Republic he attempted tirelessly to establish a lasting peace in order to preserve his beloved republican government. Following the death of his daughter Tullia and his exile from political life, Cicero wrote voraciously to distract himself from despair. His reputation as an eloquent enemy of tyranny has been applauded by many influential people throughout history.

Admirers of Cicero in history are in no short supply. He was praised throughout the Western world for over a millennium by all sorts of people. To stress his continued relevance in the world I will have to limit myself to the praise bestowed upon him by three of the early American presidents. The Founding Father John Adams wrote that, “as all the ages of the world have not produced a greater statesman and philosopher united in the same character, his authority should have great weight”. Fellow Founding Father Thomas Jefferson dubbed Cicero “the father of eloquence and philosophy”. Finally, John Quincy Adams dramatically stated that “to live without having a Cicero and a Tacitus at hand seems to me as if it was a privation of one of my limbs.”

https://fee.org/articles/why-the-founders-favorite-philosopher-was-cicero/

huh. so our founding fathers were greatly influenced by the great orators and statesmen of ancient rome.

and we are told by the braintrust on the left that this is to be mocked when referenced.

interesting.

Trump Is Why Hamilton Pushed for Impeachment Powers
October 20, 2019 at 11:03 am EDT

Ron Chernow:
“President Trump has described the impeachment proceedings as a ‘coup,’ and his White House counsel has termed them ‘unconstitutional.’ This would come as a surprise to Alexander Hamilton, who wrote not only the 11 essays in The Federalist outlining and defending the powers of the presidency, but also the two essays devoted to impeachment.

“There seems little doubt, given his writings on the presidency, that Hamilton would have been aghast at Trump’s behavior and appalled by his invitation to foreign actors to meddle in our elections. As a result, he would most certainly have endorsed the current impeachment inquiry. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Trump embodies Hamilton’s worst fears about the kind of person who might someday head the government.”
___________

Our Unmatched-in-Intellect President should know:
A "coup" is by definition illegal and unconstitutional.
An "impeachment" is by definition legal and constitutional.

Trump Brags to Foreign Leaders About His Resorts
October 20, 2019 at 12:40 pm EDT

Politico:
“Trump constantly brags about his properties around the globe when he speaks with foreign leaders in person or by phone, even more than the public instances witnessed out in the open, according to three people familiar with Trump’s conversations with foreign officials. The remarks are permeating every membrane of his presidency so much that they’ve left aides and allies mastering verbal jiu-jitsu to defend his unprecedented approach to fusing personal business interests with his position in high office.

“The interactions have led House Democrats — who have already launched an impeachment inquiry into whether Trump is illegally profiting off the presidency — and sometimes EVEN HIS OWN STAFF to question whether his namesake businesses are influencing U.S. foreign policy.”

Bannon Says Trump Not Taking Impeachment Seriously
October 20, 2019 at 2:40 pm EDT

Former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon told New York Post that impeachment is a “mortal threat” to Donald Trump’s presidency and the White House needs to start taking it more seriously.

Said Bannon:
“This is serious. As sure as the turning of the earth, he is going to be impeached by Pelosi in the next six weeks. Nancy Pelosi is very focused.”

He added:
“The problem we have is that the president needs a team around him and somebody has got to step up and make a play. Trump can’t do everything. There is just no coordination with the team."

Hamilton would say that Trump's business dealings is no different than Washington selling his tobacco to the West India Company. The Emolument clause has to do with direct compensation with money or items of value. Not income receive durning the regular course of business. (Hamilton himself sailed close to the wind as he engaged in what we now called insider trading but it was perfectly legal at the time.)

As far as the alleged involvement of foreign governments in affairs of state? You got to be kidding me. The commander of the federal army at the time (James Wilkerson) was a paid Spanish agent.

Neither country released details of the talks before the delegation departed for the United States on Sunday morning. The trip came as a hastily brokered five-day cease-fire in Syria was struggling to take hold entering its third day.

I'm not the ones trying to pass an amendment to eliminate the electoral college. It was actually created to get the slave state to support the Constitution. I know that we are a republic of states. But because the only general election in the federal government, I would support an amendment to overturn the electoral college, but it would never get the approval of enough states. But I do support state law to get the electoral college votes to go to the winner of the national election results.

I'm not in favor attempting a coup to remove a duly and legally elected president. I support his impeachment and conviction for high crimes and misdemeanors as provided by the Constitution of the United States of America.

We're not conducting an impeachment in total secrecy. The house of representatives has the authority to conduct closed impeachment hearings. Members of both parties are attending the meetings.
