Did the Iranian "attacks" miss their targets on purpose? Part II

Update: It's now being widely reported that not only were the Iraqi Government forewarned of the attacks, but the U.S. military was also aware of when and where the missiles would be coming.

Considering that there would already be an early warning system in place, the extra time would have almost assured that even had the missiles hit where they were supposed to, that there would have been plenty of time to either move or seek the sort of shelter that would be available on a military base.

Now the Iranian Government is offering that this is it. Their lame attack will be the last of it, as long as there is no retaliation from the U.S. This would be a little like that argument, where one person simply must demand to get in the last word (whether that last word is actually relevant to winning the argument).

I suspect that there will either be no action taken (most likely set of events) or that if there is any action, it would be on a much more dramatic scale as to absolutely deter any further response. At this point, the Iranians sought to do little more than save a face, and it's questionable whether or not they even accomplished that goal. Trump may just be better off leaving well enough alone. As it stands, the Americans are still only ones who accomplished anything in this sequence of events.

One little problem. Due to Trump's ill considered taking of a course of action not recommended by our military advisers, the Iranians are now on the path toward nuclear dominance.

The most pathetic argument right now is that Iranians shot down a plane to get back at America, even though there were mostly Iranians and Ukrainians on the plane...

and no Americans.

Some are trying to make this into some sort of grand conspiracy. Either it was the dumbest attack EVA or it actually just crashed.

Well James there are several problems with your statement starting with the "action not being recommended by our military advisors" and ending with it being "ill considered".

Nobody believes the military would not recommend taking out such a high value enemy target. It defies commonsense. And no, the military doesn't put "extreme options" on the table hoping the president doesn't select it. They just don't do that.

As it turned out, it was a well considered and correct action since strategically, it put Iran on it's heels.

Over 20 years ago, sometime between the fall of 1997 and the first months of 1998, a younger, more vibrant Islamic revolutionary leadership chose 40-year-old Soleimani over his superiors to head this elite unit. Khamenei is older and less willing to take the risk of choosing a daring young commander, but that is not the only reason why he did not do so.

Even if the ayatollah were inclined to select a younger replacement, the targeting of Soleimani prevents him from making such a choice. The killing proves beyond doubt that the Iranian security system is riddled with informants. They knew when Soleimani left his secret hideout in Damascus, what plane he boarded, at which airport he was going to land, which vehicles he and his retinue entered upon landing, and exactly what time those vehicles were heading out of the airport.

This suggests an information flow involving tens if not hundreds of informants closely connected to the upper echelons of the Quds Force. These informants could and did provide this information to their American counterparts in real time to get the US helicopters in position for the kill.

The killing of Number Two in any country creates a devastating chain of destructive suspicion and anxiety in the corridors of power. Khamenei’s only choice in naming a successor was to choose from among old stalwarts who are above suspicion. Every individual who is newer to the organization and to the wider security network is now suspect.

Many will no doubt be removed if not executed as Iranian counter- intelligence teams try to identify the informants. The problem for the regime is figuring out who is going to replace them.

This far outpaced the 150,000 new hires forecast by economists. In addition, ADP revised its November estimate dramatically higher, from 67,000 to 160,000."

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) blasted the Trump administration for their “unconstitutional” briefing on why President Trump ordered the assassination of Iranian Gen. Qassim Suleimani.

Said Lee: “It’s un-American, it’s unconstitutional, and it’s wrong.”

Interestingly, Fox News cut away from Lee as he excoriated the briefing as “probably the worst briefing at least on a military issue I’ve seen.”

From Robert Reich

Trump lies like most people breathe, and today was no exception. His speech this morning addressing Iran’s missile attacks on two American army bases in Iraq was riddled with misleading statements, inflammatory rhetoric, and outright lies. Among the most outrageous of Trump’s tall tales:

— He claimed the Iranian people chanted “Death to America” on the day the nuclear deal was signed. In reality, thousands of Iranians took to the streets to celebrate the signing of the nuclear deal, elate that a diplomatic channel between Iran and the United States had finally been opened after years of tensions. Public dancing, while normally banned, was even permitted as Iran’s citizens banded together in a joyous display of national unity.
— He repeated a wild claim that the U.S. gave Iran "$150 billion, not to mention $1.8 billion in cash" after signing the deal. This is patently untrue: after the deal was signed, Iran regained access to $150 billion of its own assets, which had been frozen abroad. The $1.8 billion in cash was from a 1970s-era deal in which Iran paid the U.S. $400 million for military equipment that never ended up getting delivered due to the revolution, which disintegrated diplomatic relations. After the deal was signed in 2015, the U.S. agreed to pay Iran the original $400 million in addition to $1.3 billion in interest.
— He again claimed that he had destroyed "100 percent of ISIS and its territorial caliphate". While its territorial caliphate is no longer, ISIS is very much alive and well. In fact, ISIS is poised on the edge of resurgence thanks to Trump’s brash foreign policy decisions, including his abandonment of our Kurdish allies in Syria last October and last week’s strike against General Soleimani.

This is by no means a comprehensive list of all the lies Trump spouted this morning. At a time when world peace hangs precipitously in the balance, it is unconscionable that the American people cannot rely on the president to tell us the basic truth.
