Day late and a dollar short?

Wisconsin Supreme Court strikes down Wisconsin's stay-at-home order that closed businesses to limit spread of coronavirus
The Wisconsin Supreme Court has struck down Gov. Tony Evers' order shutting down daily life to limit the spread of coronavirus — marking the first time a statewide order of its kind has been knocked down by a court of last resort.

The state's highest court sided with Republican lawmakers Wednesday in a decision that curbed the power of Democratic Gov. Tony Evers' administration to act unilaterally during public health emergencies.
The 4-3 decision was written by four of the court’s conservatives — Chief Justice Patience Roggensack and Justices Rebecca Bradley, Daniel Kelly and Annette Ziegler.
The court’s fifth conservative, Brian Hagedorn, wrote a dissent joined by the court’s two liberals, Ann Walsh Bradley and Rebecca Dallet.
The ruling immediately lifts all restrictions on businesses and gatherings imposed by the administration's order but keeps in place the closure of schools until fall. It comes after Evers had already begun lifting some restrictions because the spread of the virus has slowed for now.

This happened a little late in the game for it to have much affect. Most states are starting to slowly reopen and I suspect that this particular court ruling will prompt some others (such as our own Governor) to reconsider the harsh lock downs, many of which don't appear to be doing much good.

That being said, it's an important decision and one that will likely reverberate throughout the country.

Note that the schools are not necessarily to reopen. Trump desperately wants them to.

Fears of putting children's lives at risk trumping Trump's insanities?

Trump Feared Testing Too Many Would Spook Markets
featured by the fearless Taegan Goddard

President Trump didn’t want to make preparations for the coronavirus pandemic because he was concerned doing so would sent the stock market into a panic,
the Financial Times reports.

Said one Trump confidant:
“Jared had been arguing that testing too many people, or ordering too many ventilators, would spook the markets and so we just shouldn’t do it… That advice worked far more powerfully on Trump than what the scientists were saying. He thinks they always exaggerate.”
_______________

Trump values the markets above the medical-scientific advice of his own experts and the lives of our people and our children.

Here you go.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, warned a Senate committee Tuesday that much remains unknown about COVID-19 "particularly when it comes to children."

"We really have to be very careful," Fauci said, "because the more and more we learn, we're seeing what this virus can do."

Meanwhile, there is growing evidence that COVID-19 can and does affect children much more severely than previously thought, even if they're not ultimately diagnosed with PMIS.

DeBiasi and colleagues at Children's National Hospital analyzed medical records of 177 children and young adults in their 20s who tested positive for COVID-19. A quarter needed to be hospitalized, and a small percentage (5 percent) were critically ill and on life support.

Those most likely to require critical care interventions, such as mechanical ventilation, were either very young children, or youngsters over age 15. One of those patients was diagnosed with PMIS.

The research was published Tuesday in the Journal of Pediatrics. After the paper was submitted for publication, DeBiasi said the hospital treated about 70 additional children with the coronavirus, as well as two more with PMIS.

Those with underlying neurological conditions, such as cerebral palsy, have been significantly more likely to require hospitalization.

DeBiasi cautioned that coronavirus complications remain rare in kids, and that it's clear the vast majority of pediatric COVID-19 patients seem to have mild illnesses, or no symptoms at all.

But she said PMIS cases, so far, appear to be more prevalent on the East Coast of the U.S. and also in Europe, than had been reported in China and the U.S. West Coast.

"On the East Coast, and in particular speaking for the Washington, D.C., metropolitan region," DeBiasi said, "we're seeing more sick kids than we had expected."

By Jan Wolfe

(Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump has accused his predecessor Barack Obama of seeking to damage repeatedly referring to it as "Obamagate" but offering no details.

WHAT IS 'OBAMAGATE'?

Trump has not made clear what he is accusing Obama of doing but the allegations appear to focus on law enforcement actions taken at the end of Obama's presidency. Trump pushed the allegations during a blitz of 120 tweets and retweets on May 10, Mother's Day.

Among them was an article the Republican Trump shared from a conservative writer alleging that, following a meeting in January 2017, the month Trump took office, former FBI director James Comey, having decided to remain loyal to the Democrat Obama, withheld information from Trump; "it was OBAMAGATE," Trump wrote.

Trump's retweets that day suggested that what he calls Obamagate, a play on the word Watergate, a Nixon presidency scandal, centers largely on an FBI investigation into Russian interference in the November 2016 election which Trump won.

For years before his election Trump fueled his jump from reality TV star to political figure by championing the false claim that Obama, the first black U.S. president, had not been born in the United States. E

DID RUSSIA MEDDLE IN THE 2016 U.S. ELECTION?

While Trump has long bristled at the suggestion that foreign interference helped his upset 2016 victory, multiple reviews by U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that Russia acted to undercut his rival Hillary Clinton's chances in that election.

WHAT ELSE PRECEDED TRUMP'S 'OBAMAGATE' CLAIMS?

Trump launched his storm of tweets after the Justice Department, which oversees the FBI, sought to drop a criminal case that

On May 7, the Justice Department, led by Attorney General William Barr, a Trump appointee, said it wanted to drop the case because it was no longer convinced the FBI's Jan. 24, 2017, Flynn interview that underpinned the charges was conducted with a "legitimate investigative basis" and did not think his statements were "material even if untrue."

The move was all the more unusual because Flynn had pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his dealings with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the United States, in the weeks after Trump won in 2016 but before he took office

The federal judge overseeing the Flynn case has yet to decide whether charges may be dropped.

Flynn's lawyers argue he was ambushed as part of a plot by biased FBI agents. Many former law enforcement officials have said the FBI acted properly in questioning Flynn and that Barr is protecting Trump's friends and associates.

In May 2019, Barr assigned prosecutor John Durham to review the origins of the investigation into Russia's 2016 election interference.

WHAT CRIME DOES TRUMP CLAIM OBAMA COMMITTED?

In response to a question from a Washington Post reporter about the specifics of his claim, Trump replied: "Obamagate. It's been going on for a long time. It's been going on from before I even got elected. And it's a disgrace that it happened."

Children Gravely Ill With Covid-19 Often Had Other Medical Conditions

A study of 48 young I.C.U. patients in U.S. hospitals found that two died. Eighteen of the children were put on ventilators.

Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, which treated pediatric Covid-19 cases in late March and early April.

As concern grows over the potential for children to become seriously ill from the coronavirus, a new study paints the most detailed picture yet of American children who were treated in intensive care units throughout the United States as the pandemic was taking hold in the country.

None of the children in the study, published Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, were stricken by the new mysterious inflammatory syndrome linked to the coronavirus that can cause life-threatening cardiac issues in children. They suffered from the virus’s primary line of attack: the severe respiratory problems that have afflicted tens of thousands of American adults.

The study looked at 48 cases from 14 hospitals, infants up to age 21, during late March and early April. Two of the children died. Eighteen were placed on ventilators and two of them remain on the breathing machines more than a month later, said Dr. Lara S. Shekerdemian, chief of critical care at Texas Children’s Hospital, and an author of the study.

Over all, the study both reinforces the evidence that only a small percentage of children will be severely affected by the virus and confirms that some can become devastatingly ill.

“You can read this either like a half-empty glass or a half-full glass,” said Dr. Daniele De Luca, the president-elect of the European Society for Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care, who was not involved in the study. “At the end of the day, we have to realize that this disease can actually be serious in children. It’s not like in the beginning when some people said, OK, this is never going to happen.”

The vast majority of the patients — 40 children, including the two who died — had pre-existing medical conditions. Nearly half of those patients had complex developmental disorders like cerebral palsy or lifelong technology-dependent treatments like tracheostomies or feeding tubes, children “who have trouble walking, talking, eating, breathing,” Dr. Shekerdemian said. Other pre-existing health issues included cancer and suppressed immune systems from organ transplants or immunological conditions.

Help us report in critical moments.
Subscribe today to support The Times
Perhaps because it was so early in the pandemic, none of the children in the study displayed the newly identified pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome, which experts believe may be a latent condition that develops weeks after the initial coronavirus infection and assaults a child’s circulatory system with inflammation rather than directly attacking the lungs. Over the weekend, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York reported that three children in the state have died of that illness, and last week the journal Lancet reported a death in England.

New Inflammatory Condition in Children Probably Linked to Coronavirus, Study Finds

Researchers compared 10 cases in Italy with previous cases of a similar childhood illness, Kawasaki disease. The rate of the new cases was much higher, and the conditions were more serious.

As concerns mount over children with a serious and potentially deadly inflammatory condition, a new study sheds light on the illness’s distinctive characteristics and provides the strongest evidence yet that the syndrome is linked to the coronavirus.

The condition, called pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome, has been reported in about 100 children in New York State, including three who died, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said this week. Cases have been reported in other states, including Louisiana, Mississippi and California, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said it will soon issue an alert asking doctors to report cases of children with symptoms of the syndrome.

There have also been at least 50 cases reported in European countries, including in France, Switzerland, Spain and Britain, where at least one death has been attributed to the syndrome.

This should be a massive scandal. It should be a massive scandal because, at the very least, it demonstrates the nation’s chief law enforcement agencies, prompted by political actors at the very top of the government, racing to bend the rules in order to pursue a case they were convinced they would make: the case that the Trump campaign had conspired with the Russian government. From the purposefully botched Carter Page Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant to the absurdly conjured prosecution of Flynn, the most powerful institutions in American life violated the protocols meant to restrict abuse, firmly secure in their own feelings of moral rectitude.

That’s the best-case scenario.

The worst-case scenario is far darker: that by early January, with no evidence of Russian collusion, leaders of the nation’s political and law enforcement agencies decided that guilt was irrelevant, and that the Trump administration had to be strangled in the crib.

New York City’s health commissioner blew off an urgent NYPD request for 500,000 surgical masks as the coronavirus crisis mounted — telling a high-ranking police official that “I don’t give two rats’ asses about your cops,” The Post has learned.

Dr. Oxiris Barbot made the heartless remark during a brief phone conversation in late March with NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan, sources familiar with the matter said Wednesday.

Monahan asked Barbot for 500,000 masks but she said she could only provide 50,000, the sources said.

“I don’t give two rats’ asses about your cops,” Barbot said, according to sources.

“I need them for others.”

The conversation took place as increasing numbers of cops were calling out sick with symptoms of COVID-19 but before the department suffered its first casualties from the deadly respiratory disease, sources said.

Does Dr. Fauci still regard life under lockdown as merely “inconvenient”? Of course economics is not his field, but presumably as a U.S. citizen he has noticed the gargantuan impact of the government response to the virus.

Yet there he was again yesterday on television encouraging more of the same as he remotely addressed a Senate hearing. “Dr. Anthony Fauci warns senators of ‘suffering and death’ if states reopen too early,” says a CNBC headline.

“Fauci warns that ‘consequences could be really serious’ if states move too quickly to reopen,” announces the Washington Post.

It’s important to understand that Dr. Fauci is only focused on one set of consequences, and it’s not clear he’s analyzing them correctly. Sen. Rand Paul (R., Ky.), who is also a medical doctor, challenged Dr. Fauci’s views specifically on the risks posed by Covid-19, as well as the disease expert’s central role in the federal response.

Dr. Paul noted that for young people, the virus has caused very low mortality, that many Covid-19 forecasts have proven to be wrong and that places like Sweden that have avoided strict lockdowns are doing better than many shuttered areas.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-limits-of-anthony-faucis-expertise-11589392347

this is worth repeating - "It’s important to understand that Dr. Fauci is only focused on one set of consequences, and it’s not clear he’s analyzing them correctly."

so far fauci has been demonstrably WRONG with his analysis, comments and "models" going back to january, yet he is positioned as the single arbiter and only opinion worthy of consideration as society peers into the abyss of collapse.

it could be said that fauci is being extremely selfish as well. his position, his livelihood and his existence are secure and virtually guaranteed. meanwhile, he impacts the future of every American, and guaranteeing the financial ruin of perhaps millions simply by his refusal to consider the OVERALL impact of his recommendations, and not just the medical ones.

he wants to do his best to make sure you LIVE...

...he just doesn't give a fuck if you have anything to live FOR.

heads he wins, tails we lose.

New Inflammatory Condition in Children Probably Linked to Coronavirus, Study Finds

So we are talking a handful of anecdotal situations and less than a 100 world wide whom may (or may not) have a inflammatory syndrome which may (or may not) be tied to Covid-19.

The interesting thing is that the disease (Kawasaki syndrome) exists outside of Covid-19 and has for years. There is no way to know if a child who catches one is more prone to the other, which one affects which way, or if children who are prone to catching one will be prone to catching both.

It's pure speculation (and Fauci admits this) and he is not making any determination at this point... other than to suggest that there may be more things out there?

Go figure.

But the death and hospitalization rates don't lie... even if you add in all of the "possible" issues that "might" be happening, Covid-19 is still affecting school aged children at a fraction of what the seasonal flu does.

Italian doctors have found a "strong association" between the novel coronavirus and a rare condition that has been seen in clusters of children in several countries since the beginning of the pandemic.

The condition is similar to Kawasaki disease, an inflammation of the walls of the arteries which ordinarily affects just one in 10,000 children. The new Kawasaki-like syndrome is also often accompanied by toxic shock, and has seen some children need intensive care.

Scientists have suspected a link between the two diseases, given the coincidence between the pandemic and the unusual flare-up of the Kawasaki-like syndrome. UK health officials also noted that cases had similar blood profiles to children with severe COVID-19. But without firm evidence, it was not possible to make the connection for sure.

On Wednesday, a peer-reviewed study published by Italian doctors in the medical journal The Lancet provided the first clear evidence that the illness has a connection to the coronavirus.

Italian doctors have found a "strong association" between the novel coronavirus and a rare condition that has been seen in clusters of children in several countries since the beginning of the pandemic.

Which could mean a 101 different things. It could simply mean that a kid with an immunity system prone to getting the Kawasaki disease are also prone to getting Covid-19. Moreover, those "clusters" are almost exclusively infants and toddlers (not school age children).

And none of that changes the simple facts that this is way less dangerous (even including the very worst case Kawasaki scenario) than the flu for school aged children.

I am not 100% sure why people like you pretend that it's okay for a kid to die from the flu and we need to nothing about it, but that we should shut down schools across the board because 1 out of a million children are getting some rare disease that isn't even necessarily fatal.

Fauci is a scientist...

We pay him to provide us with scientific data and scientific conclusions...

If I wanted someone to worry, we could hire someone's mother at a fraction of the cost...

And herein lies the issue.

Even Fauci understands, accepts, and even suggests that his opinion is not the end all be all, and that it is just one piece of a larger overall puzzle.

When he suggests we shouldn't be "cavalier" with positive data points, I think there are many would suggest that we shouldn't be so "cavalier" with regards to how well our "shut down" is actually working.

Time will tell (as it always does) how well the reopening will do and to what degree it will trigger another outbreak of the virus. But if it triggers it today, then it would have still triggered it in two weeks, and it would have still triggered it in a month, etc, etc...

Waiting for the sake of waiting... or waiting for a cure or vaccine is not a reasonable solution. But it seems to be the one that many Governors are taking.

Today we are freaking out with a disease with about 12% of the deaths of the pandemic of 1918 in a population that is now over 3 times the size it was in 1918.

I suspect back in 1918 death was still a constant companion and our ancestors were made of sterner stuff.

Certainly they are not the soft, privileged, generation of today looking for their safe spaces. It is ironic that the people who are most afraid of COVID-19 have the least reason to be afraid as the virus is not fatal to the average, healthy young adult.

Consequently the people who should be most afraid are generally the least afraid.

The Spanish flu on the other hand was an equal opportunity killer.
