Hundreds of Doctors sign letter urging Trump to reopen the economy!

So should we listen to them?
The red group receives highest priority. The next priority is to ensure that the other two groups do not deteriorate a level. Decades of research have shown that by strictly following this algorithm, we save the maximum number of lives.
Millions of Americans are already at triage level red. These include 150,000 Americans per month who would have had a new cancer detected through routine screening that hasn’t happened, millions who have missed routine dental care to fix problems strongly linked to heart disease/death, and preventable cases of stroke, heart attack, and child abuse. Suicide hotline phone calls have increased 600%.
Tens of millions are at triage level yellow. Liquor sales have increased 300-600%, cigarettes sales have increased, rent has gone unpaid, family relationships have become frayed, and millions of well-child check-ups have been missed.
Hundreds of millions are at triage level green. These are people who currently are solvent, but at risk should economic conditions worsen. Poverty and financial uncertainty is closely linked to poor health.

To be clear, I am not a fan of listening to these sorts of letter writers. In a country of 327 million people you could find a few hundred people to sign a letter in support of almost anything, while simultaneously finding a few hundred other people to sign a letter in opposition to that exact same thing. In most case, you could find legitimate serious experts on both sides of the debate.

But I think this sort of letter needs to be heard, because we have sort of forgotten that there are still millions and millions of Americans who have other medical problems not associated with Covid-19 who have for all practical purposes have been put at the back of the line or just ignored all together.

How many people will see much worse negative effects from cancer and other diseases because they had to wait several weeks for a simple screening? How many mentally ill people were not able to see their therapist because they were shut down and not seeing patients because of Covid-19. How will these large increase in alcohol and cigarette sales affect our long term health as a country?

As pointed out, suicides assistance is up 600% and our increase in actual suicides has been unprecedented (and will likely continue to get worse). For every 1% rise in unemployment you see a bigger rise in both suicides and various overdoses.

Science or at least a scientific approach to handling something like this REQUIRES us to take everything into consideration, not just Covid-19. While it may seem prudent to listen to the epidemiologists who are "only" concerned with stopping the spread, in reality it would be way more prudent to listen to "everyone" with a stake in the health of the United States citizens.

It makes no medical, scientific, or practical sense to spend a ton of resources to prevent people from getting sick from one thing, while promoting more people to get sick (and possibly die) from a slew of other potential sicknesses. It doesn't take a math minor to suggest that an action that saves 100,000 lives from one thing, but promotes the deaths of 250,000 people from other causes is not a life cost effective response.

It's time to take our blinders off and look at the big picture. I know this might be tough for some to hear, but our response to Covid-19 (in the end) will very likely be seen as overkill (and a mistake) when all of the collateral damage eventually gets factored in.

New York Times:
U.S. Death Toll from Pandemic Is Staggering

The historical comparisons are breathtaking.

More Americans have died of the coronavirus in the last 12 weeks than died in the Vietnam and Korean Wars combined and nearly twice as many as died of battle wounds during World War I.

The death toll has nearly matched the number of people killed by the initial blasts of the world’s first atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In terms of American deaths, it is the equivalent of
22 Iraq wars,
33 September 11 attacks,
41 Afghanistan wars,
42 Pearl Harbors or
25,000 Benghazis.

Ann Coulter went on an early Sunday morning Twitter tear, calling President Donald Trump “the most disloyal actual retard that has ever set foot in the Oval Office.”

The far-right media pundit and former Trump defender was triggered by the president’s Friday tweet in which he called for Alabama voters to “not trust Jeff Sessions” and instead put their support behind Sessions’ Republican Senate seat challenger, football coach Tommy Tuberville.

“3 years ago, after Jeff Sessions recused himself, the Fraudulent Mueller Scam began. Alabama, do not trust Jeff Sessions. He let our Country down. That’s why I endorsed Coach Tommy Tuberville (@TTuberville), the true supporter of our #MAGA agenda!,” Trump tweeted.

And that set off Coulter, who called Trump a “moron,” “retard” and “lout,” who was incapable of “pretending to be” a “decent, compassionate human being.”

GOP Risks Backlash in Trump’s Haste to Reopen

“In states Trump won in 2016, 23 people have lost a job for every 1 person infected. In states Democrat Hillary Clinton won, 13 people have lost a job for every person infected.

“Put another way, in Trump country, the virus’s greater pain has been economic, which helps explain why support for a swift reopening is so much more intense there.

Washington Post:
“The pandemic that first struck in major metropolises is now increasingly finding its front line in the country’s rural areas; counties with acres of farmland, cramped meatpacking plants, out-of-the-way prisons and few hospital beds.

“Many of these communities are isolated and hard to reach. They were largely spared from the disease shutting down their states — until, suddenly, they weren’t.

Rural counties now have some of the highest rates of covid-19 cases and deaths in the country, topping even the hardest-hit New York City boroughs and signaling a new phase of the pandemic — one of halting, scattered outbreaks that could devastate still more of America’s most vulnerable towns as states lift stay-at-home orders.”

During her two-decade career, Coulter has followed these rules carefully. She has accused a group of 9/11 widows of reveling in their husbands’ deaths; lamented that Timothy McVeigh didn’t park his truck in front of the New York Times building; argued that the increasing popularity of soccer in America is a sign of moral decay; and been fired from MSNBC for telling a disabled Vietnam veteran on air that people like him were to blame for losing the war. (She later said she didn’t know he was disabled.)

In response, Coulter has been described, variously, as a human submachine pistol (Lloyd Grove, Washington Post, 2002); a “paid banshee” and “self-drawn cartoon” (David Carr, New York Times, 2003); “She-Devil” (John Edwards, 2007); “Trump’s Aryan Witch Enforcer” (conservative critic Charlie Sykes, 2016); and “troll” (multiple citations).

Few consider Coulter a serious intellectual. But she’s a good debater – charismatic, dexterous, always ready with a talking point or quip. She also has an occasional, uncanny ability to sense political undercurrents that others miss.

In June 2015, three days after Donald Trump announced his candidacy for president, Coulter appeared on an episode of the Bill Maher show. She told him that, of the 17 Republican primary candidates, Trump was the one with the best chance of winning the White House. The room erupted in laughter. She then proceeded to tell an incredulous Maher that Bernie Sanders was the only Democrat who could beat Trump.

Guess it's now Sanders !!!

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden on Monday laid a wreath at a veterans park near his Delaware home, the first time in more than two months he has left his neighborhood.

The former vice president, who has opted to campaign remotely from his house in Wilmington amid the coronavirus pandemic, made the unannounced visit to the Veterans Memorial Park in nearby New Castle with his wife Jill Biden.

The two wore black masks as they took part in a brief wreath-laying ceremony there.
Biden kept his mask on during an exchange with reporters in which he was asked if he had a message for the country on Memorial Day.

“Never forget the sacrifices that these men and women made. Never, ever, forget,” Biden said.

Aside from some neighborhood walks and bike rides, Biden and his wife have followed state health officials’ guidance to stay home since mid-March. They have relied on cameras set up around their house to appear in live-streamed campaign events, remote television interviews and prerecorded videos.

The visit to the veterans memorial came as Biden’s November opponent, President Trump, made televised visits to Arlington National Cemetery and the Fort McHenry National Monument in Baltimore.

Biden’s campaign has not made public a timeline for resuming traditional campaign events, saying it will follow scientists’ advice. When asked by reporters in recent weeks, Biden and his aides have argued that he is campaigning no less aggressively, even though he has opted not to travel.

Biden was asked Monday about leaving his house after two months.

“It feels good to be out of my house,” he said

The World Health Organization announced on Monday that it's suspending a trial of hydroxychloroquine in treating COVID-19, saying fears of the drug's potential danger is causing it to "err on the side of caution."

The medication, best known for use against malaria and autoimmune disorders, has been touted as a possible answer to COVID-19 by President Donald Trump.

But WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said evidence has shown harmful side effects of hydroxychloroquine, including heart problems.

Tedros cited the British journal The Lancet which published findings on Friday, showing that hydroxychloroquine does not help COVID-19 patients and might even increase deaths.

"The executive group has implemented a temporary pause of the hydroxychloroquine arm within the Solidarity Trial while the safety data is reviewed by the data safety monitoring board. The other arms of the trial are continuing,” Tedros told an online briefing from Geneva.

Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, WHO's chief scientist, said the organization's own investigators and regulators in individual nations have raised enough red flags about hydroxychloroquine to prompt this halt.

Ann Coulter Turns on ‘Disloyal Actual Retard’ Trump in Twitter Rant

Ann Coulter went on an early Sunday morning Twitter tear, calling President Donald Trump “the most disloyal actual retard that has ever set foot in the Oval Office.”

The far-right media pundit and former Trump defender was triggered by the president’s Friday tweet in which he called for Alabama voters to “not trust Jeff Sessions” and instead put their support behind Sessions’ Republican Senate seat challenger, football coach Tommy Tuberville.

And that set off Coulter, who called Trump a “moron,” “retard” and “lout,” who was incapable of “pretending to be” a “decent, compassionate human being.”

Coulter capped off her rant by affirming the issues that Trump stood behind as a candidate but that she feels he has abandoned since entering the White House. The commentator, who published a book in 2016 titled “In Trump We Trust,” added that she regrets once believing in “this shallow and broken man.”

In February 2019, Trump declared a national emergency at the Southern border, while pushing himself away from Coulter. She responded by saying that “the only national emergency is that our president is an idiot.”

Allen Lehner was a Republican until Donald Trump became his party’s nominee in 2016. The 74-year-old retiree says he couldn’t bring himself to vote for someone who lied, belittled others, walked out on his bills and mistreated women — but he also couldn’t bring himself to vote for Hillary Clinton. So he didn’t vote.
Trump has done nothing since to entice Lehner back.
Lehner, who now considers himself an independent, says he is frightened by the president’s lack of leadership and maturity amid the nation’s health and economic crisis. Several people in his gated community in Delray Beach, Fla., have gotten sick; at least one has died. He worries about his own health — he has an autoimmune disease — and also about his adult children, including a daughter who has gone back to work and a son whose pay has been cut.
He plans to vote for Joe Biden in November.
“Regardless of what they say about his senior moments, I think he would be good and take good care of the country,” said Lehner, who owned furniture and fireplace-supply stores in central Pennsylvania before retiring to Florida.
While Democrats have worried about Biden’s struggles to excite younger voters, older voters who are upset with the president are poised to be potentially more influential in November, especially in swing states whose populations skew their way, like Florida, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin.
In Florida, more than 20 percent of those who voted in the 2016 election were over age 65, according to exit polls. In 2016, Trump won the Florida senior vote by a 17-point margin over Clinton, according to exit polls. The state ranks as one Trump must almost certainly win to insure his victory, while Biden has other paths to the White House.
AD

Yet for months, Biden has been more popular than Trump with seniors. A national poll of registered voters released by Quinnipiac University last week shows Biden leading by 10 points among voters over 65. A Quinnipiac poll in late April found 52 percent of Florida seniors supporting Biden to 42 percent for Trump, while a Fox News poll around the same time found Biden narrowly ahead.
“We have the ability to sway this election,” Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Terrie Rizzo declared as she opened an online town hall with fellow seniors earlier this month, which included a tutorial on voting by mail. “Trump has failed us and it is now our turn.”

• Given the additional review of unblinded data conducted by the full independent Data
Monitoring Committee yesterday and their recommendation to continue without interruption, it
is the view of the Chief Investigators that any pause in recruitment would be unjustified and
would not be in the interests of trial participants or public health.
• The RECOVERY trial provides the best and most rapid opportunity to produce robust information
on the overall effects of HCQ on the risk of death from COVID-19. These results will be of huge
importance to the millions of patients who are (or will be) treated with HCQ and could have a
major impact on a disease that has already caused hundreds of thousands of deaths.
In the light of the information provided in this response, and the ongoing monitoring of the safety of
hydroxychloroquine by the independent Data Monitoring Committee, the MHRA has confirmed in
writing that “it is acceptable to allow continued randomisation into the hydroxychloroquine arm of
the trial.”
The RECOVERY trial therefore continues as planned, with no alteration to the protocol, and all
treatment arms remain open to enrolment

COVID-19 Infection Fatality Rate Below 0.3%
That rate is much lower than the numbers used in the horrifying projections that shaped the government response to the epidemic.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the current "best estimate" for the fatality rate among Americans with COVID-19 symptoms is 0.4 percent. The CDC also estimates that 35 percent of people infected by the COVID-19 virus never develop symptoms. Those numbers imply that the virus kills less than 0.3 percent of people infected by it—far lower than the infection fatality rates (IFRs) assumed by the alarming projections that drove the initial government response to the epidemic, including broad business closure and stay-at-home orders.

The CDC offers the new estimates in its "COVID-19 Pandemic Planning Scenarios," which are meant to guide hospital administrators in "assessing resource needs" and help policy makers "evaluate the potential effects of different community mitigation strategies." It says "the planning scenarios are being used by mathematical modelers throughout the Federal government."

The CDC's five scenarios include one based on "a current best estimate about viral transmission and disease severity in the United States." That scenario assumes a "basic reproduction number" of 2.5, meaning the average carrier can be expected to infect that number of people in a population with no immunity. It assumes an overall symptomatic case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.4 percent, roughly four times the estimated CFR for the seasonal flu. The CDC estimates that the CFR for COVID-19 falls to 0.05 percent among people younger than 50 and rises to 1.3 percent among people 65 and older. For people in the middle (ages 50–64), the estimated CFR is 0.2 percent.

That "best estimate" scenario also assumes that 35 percent of infections are asymptomatic, meaning the total number of infections is more than 50 percent larger than the number of symptomatic cases. It therefore implies that the IFR is between 0.2 percent and 0.3 percent. By contrast, the projections that the CDC made in March, which predicted that as many as 1.7 million Americans could die from COVID-19 without intervention, assumed an IFR of 0.8 percent. Around the same time, researchers at Imperial College produced a worst-case scenario in which 2.2 million Americans died, based on an IFR of 0.9 percent.

Science not wild, unsubstantiated opinion by unknown "experts" posted by James.

You fucking IDIOT lo iq, the REASON they unblinded the hydroxychloroquine trial to evaluate safety was the trials you mentioned:

On Friday 22nd May we received a letter from the MHRA in which they notified us of their concerns relating to the use of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for patients with COVID-19 in the light of the recent publication by Mehra et al in The Lancet on 22 May 2020.

We have held two videoconferences with the MHRA and
provided a detailed response which is summarised below

They then videoconferenced with the authors and said:

"The authors of both papers conclude that their findings should be interpreted with caution, are not definitive, and that randomised controlled trials are required to reach any conclusion about the benefit or harm of HCQ for
COVID-19."

After talking to those studies authors and then looking at their unblinded safety data they saw no issues and with the potential of huge importance to Covid-19 and resumed the study.

Coronavirus 'disappearing' so fast Oxford vaccine has 'only 50% chance of working'
Professor Adrian Hill describes the efforts to create a vaccine as a "race against the virus disappearing, and against time".

There is only a 50% chance of the Oxford coronavirus vaccine working because cases in the UK are declining so fast, one of the scientists behind it has warned.

The University of Oxford's Jenner Institute and the Oxford Vaccine Group began developing a COVID-19 vaccine in January using a virus taken from chimpanzees.

But with the number of UK coronavirus cases dropping every day, there may not be enough people to test it on, according to the institute's director Professor Adrian Hill.

He told The Sunday Telegraph: "It's a race against the virus disappearing, and against time. We said earlier in the year that there was an 80% chance of developing an effective vaccine by September.

"But at the moment, there's a 50% chance that we get no result at all. We're in the bizarre position of wanting COVID to stay, at least for a little while."

Good news in a way.

But it's not disappearing in New York that fact so you can get a good sample of subjects there.

Anybody know if he got it from Northam ? He was out and about today without his and forgetting to stay at home or socially distance. Must have just been an oversight and roger will be very upset at him.

that's nice alky.

let's check in on a blue state governor's COVID-19 achievements, shall we?

362,764 cases in New York state, including 29,229 deaths.

https://www.timesunion.com/news/article/Coronavirus-live-updates-Schenectady-County-s-15292554.php

and NY remains mostly locked down to this day.

so alky, tell us again what a terrible job the republican governor of GA is doing compared to my governor here in NY. and while you're at it, be thankful the nursing home that you call home is not located in NY.

"The CDC just came out with a report that should be earth-shattering to the narrative of the political class, yet it will go into the thick pile of vital data and information about the virus that is not getting out to the public. For the first time, the CDC has attempted to offer a real estimate of the overall death rate for COVID-19, and under its most likely scenario, the number is 0.26%. Officials estimate a 0.4% fatality rate among those who are symptomatic and project a 35% rate of asymptomatic cases among those infected, which drops the overall infection fatality rate (IFR) to just 0.26% — almost exactly where Stanford researchers pegged it a month ago."

"opposed to the 3.4% estimate of the World Health Organization, which helped drive the panic and the lockdowns. Now the CDC is agreeing to the lower rate in plain ink."

Great catch you fucking trump sucking asshole....Maybe you can get your idol and his spawn to stop tweeting BULLSHIT and Lies before Twitter finally shuts his account!!!! BTW....lying is not free speech!!!!

mp has been promoting a falsehood about the death of a woman nearly two decades ago.Credit...Samuel Corum for The New York Times
“Please delete those tweets,” the widower begged in a letter last week to Twitter’s chief executive, Jack Dorsey. “My wife deserves better.”
Yes, Twitter, Lori Klausutis certainly does deserve better, nearly two decades after she died in a tragic accident that has morphed into a macabre and continuing nightmare for her husband, Timothy Klausutis.
The boogeyman plunging him and the family of his late wife into the very worst of memory holes is a conspiracy-theory-loving, twitchy-fingered and often shameless tweeter who also happens to be the president of the United States, Donald J. Trump.
“President Trump on Tuesday tweeted to his nearly 80 million followers alluding to the repeatedly debunked falsehood that my wife was murdered by her boss, former U.S. Rep. Joe Scarborough. The son of the president followed and more directly attacked my wife by tweeting to his followers as the means of spreading this vicious lie,” wrote Mr. Klausutis, in a letter sent to Mr. Dorsey on Thursday that I obtained over the weekend.

“I’m asking you to intervene in this instance because the president of the United States has taken something that does not belong to him — the memory of my dead wife — and perverted it for perceived political gain.” (You can read the letter in full here.)
Mr. Klausutis deserves an answer from Mr. Dorsey, who has the unenviable task of sorting out what is perhaps unsortable, which is to say, the ugly heart of Twitter’s most famous customer. While sources close to the company said executives had been trying to figure out what to do over the weekend, the company has at this writing been silent about this latest controversy involving Mr. Trump’s appalling and rule-breaking Twitter habit.
This episode is not unlike other infamous stories floating around social media, like the inhumane speculation about the death of a Democratic National Committee staffer, Seth Rich, or the ocean of nasty misinformation about the murders of the children of Sandy Hook Elementary that got Alex Jones deservedly thrown off several platforms.
But this mess is perhaps the high tide of that endless spew of toxic bile because it is being relentlessly amped up by the leader of the free world.

Hours after President Trump was spotted Monday partaking in public Memorial Day remembrances without a face mask, he hopped on Twitter to retweet a Fox News commentator criticizing former vice president Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, for wearing one.
“This might help explain why Trump doesn’t like to wear a mask in public,” Brit Hume, Fox News’s senior political analyst, tweeted Monday evening, sharing a picture of Biden at a Delaware veterans memorial earlier that day. In the photo, which documents Biden’s first public appearance since mid-March, most of the 77-year-old’s face is obscured by a black mask and a pair of Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses.
Memorial Day offers array of contrasts as Biden and Trump salute war dead, with and without masks

Hume’s tweet sparked instant backlash from a number of critics on the left. By early Tuesday, Hume was still trending on Twitter as detractors questioned whether he valued Biden looking “cool” more than encouraging efforts to slow the spread of the potentially deadly novel coronavirus that has now killed more than 97,000 Americans.

Trump, however, appeared unbothered by the outcry and shared the tweet to his 80.2 million followers Monday night.
Trump’s retweet came at the end of a holiday weekend defined by dueling optics. As officials urged social distancing and the number of reported covid-19 deaths in the U.S. crept closer to 100,000, viral photos and videos emerged showing beaches, pool parties and raceways packed with crowds raucously celebrating the long weekend.
But the contrasting approaches to Memorial Day appeared most obvious in the actions of the nation’s leaders — the president and his presumptive Democratic opponent — as they paid public tributes on Monday to lives lost in past wars.

Meanwhile, Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, both wearing black masks, left their neighborhood for the first time in more than two months to lay a wreath at the Delaware Memorial Bridge Veterans Memorial Park. Members of Biden’s staff and security detail also sported face coverings during Monday’s outing.
For many, the conflicting images of Trump and Biden marked yet another flash point in the ongoing culture war over the practice epublican leaders, meanwhile, including North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, have implored their constituents to not view the face coverings as political statements but rather as a necessary tool to help contain the virus.

During a Sunday appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” DeWine stressed that what people do now “directly impacts others.”
“This is not about politics,” he said.

On Monday, Hume and Trump found themselves at the center of the escalating debate over masks.
Critics went after the pair for calling out Biden while simultaneously praising the former vice president’s decision to follow official health guidelines.

Ronald A. Klain, an adviser to Biden, hit back at Hume on Twitter with a nearly identical message.
“A President takes mAs the reactions poured in Monday, Hume doubled down on his criticism of Biden, writing incorrectly that the Bidens had gone to a cemetery and suggesting that the masks were largely for show.
“Uh, he was visiting a cemetery and had been in quarantine for weeks,” Hume tweeted in response to one critic. “The video showed no one within six feet of him beside his wife. So what was the mask for, other than to virtue signal?”
In another tweet, Hume wrote that Biden “got you to think he was showing concern, so I guess the mask served it purpose.”

Donald Trump picked Memorial Day to attack Rep. Conor Lamb (D-Pa.), a Marine Corps veteran, as an “American fraud” and “puppet for Crazy Nancy Pelosi” as the president endorsed the lawmaker’s rival on Monday.

Trump goofed up the attack, referring to Conor Lamb as “Connor Lamm” as he pitched Republican candidate Sean Parnell in the election for Lamb’s Pennsylvania seat.

Trump appeared to be unaware that Lamb, far from being Pelosi’s “puppet,” was one of only 15 Democrats in the House who did not vote for her to become speaker in 2017.

Lamb won his seat in March 2018 in a contest with Republican Rick Saccone, who was endorsed by Trump. It was a stunning Democratic upset in a longtime Republican district that faced the special election after Republican Rep. Tim Murphy resigned over an extramarital affair.

What really got to critics on Twitter was Trump’s attack on a veteran on Memorial Day from a president who dodged the Vietnam War draft with a suspect medical complaint of “bone spurs.” It’s not known why Trump would call Lamb a “fraud.”

Lamb, who was a captain in the Marine Corps, suggested the best revenge will be at the ballot box.
