We'll be hearing a lot more about this sort of thing...

Is the cure is worse than the disease?

This is the way America works, folks. Hindsight is always 20/20 especially with controversial and important situations. Does anyone remember the solidarity of intelligence regarding Saddam Hussein and his WMD? Everyone (including the United Nations intelligence) had declared for certain that the WMD existed and the only real question was what to do about it. But when all the searching in the world didn't come up with the sort of stock piles imagined, then everyone acted as if that was obvious all along. Bush dropped in approval to one of the lowest in Presidential history.

Why? Because he got it wrong and he made the call on the wrong intelligence. It never really mattered after the fact how many people agreed or disagreed about the intelligence. There was always one person who suggested that they were not there (and that one person was the one everyone should have listened to).

Make no mistake, if it turns out that there is a big economic divide over those places that shut down (and are still shut down) and those who didn't... if there are more statistics that show negative health effects associated with the lock downs, then the people will rebel against those leaders who made those judgement (even if they agree with them now).

It won't matter that these decisions were popular at the time or if they say that they were following the advice of the experts (or following science). If they turn out to be damaging decisions that didn't appear to make these states better off in the short or long run, then the leadership who made those decisions (Governors) will end up paying the cost. People expect their leaders to be correct, and they will judge them even through hindsight.

600 Physicians Say Lockdowns Are A ‘Mass Casualty Incident’

More than 600 of the nation’s physicians sent a letter to President Trump this week calling the coronavirus shutdowns a “mass casualty incident” with “exponentially growing negative health consequences” to millions of non COVID patients.

“The downstream health effects...are being massively under-estimated and under-reported. This is an order of magnitude error," according to the letter initiated by Simone Gold, M.D., an emergency medicine specialist in Los Angeles.

“Suicide hotline phone calls have increased 600%,” the letter said. Other silent casualties: “150,000 Americans per month who would have had new cancer detected through routine screening.”

From missed cancer diagnoses to untreated heart attacks and strokes to increased risks of suicides, “We are alarmed at what appears to be a lack of consideration for the future health of our patients.”

Patients fearful of visiting hospitals and doctors’ offices are dying because COVID-phobia is keeping them from seeking care. One patient died at home of a heart attack rather than go to an emergency room. The number of severe heart attacks being treated in nine U.S hospitals surveyed dropped by nearly 40% since March. Cardiologists are worried “a second wave of deaths” indirectly caused by the virus is likely.

Low virus rate leaves Oxford vaccine trial with 'only 50% chance'

London: An Oxford University vaccine trial has only a 50 per cent chance of success because coronavirus is fading so rapidly in Britain, a project co-leader has warned.

The warning comes as new data reveals that there are now 224 vaccines in development around the world - almost double the total of just a month ago.

Professor Adrian Hill said an upcoming Oxford vaccine trial, involving 10,000 volunteers, threatened to return "no result" because of low transmission of COVID-19 in the community.

The eyes of the nation — and perhaps the world — are firmly on Hill and his team at Oxford University.

...

"It is a race, yes. But it's not a race against the other guys. It's a race against the virus disappearing, and against time," he said. "At the moment, there's a 50 per cent chance that we get no result at all."

Hill said that of 10,000 people recruited to test the vaccine in the coming weeks — some of whom will be given a placebo — he expected fewer than 50 people to catch the virus. If fewer than 20 test positive, then the results might be useless, he warned.

"We're in the bizarre position of wanting COVID to stay, at least for a little while. But cases are declining."

FOX NEWS
Chris Wallace Grills Dr. Birx: Did White House ‘Underestimate’ Virus and ‘Reopen Too Soon?’
1 hr ago

Fox News anchor Chris Wallace pressed White House coronavirus task force coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx on the rising coronavirus death count, asking Birx if the Trump administration has “underestimated” the strength of the virus as it rushes to fully reopen the economy.

With all 50 states now at least partially reopened amid the pandemic and people flocking to beaches and parks to enjoy the Memorial Day weekend, the Fox News Sunday host noted that models have increasingly upped their projections of COVID-19 deaths as states ease social-distancing restrictions.

“Early this coming week we’re going to reach 100,000 deaths from the coronavirus and those models that you’re citing now talk about close to 150,000 deaths by August,” Wallace wondered aloud. “What happened, doctor?”

Birx brought up initial projections that showed that up to 2.4 million Americans could perish if no actions were taken, which also predicted up to 240,000 deaths with stay-at-home orders implemented.

“Those are the figures we continue to stand by in this first wave,” she added.

“But to press it a little bit," Wallace fired back, "a month ago, you are saying we were going to come down below the low end of the model, which is 100- to 240,000, to 60,000. So I guess my question is, in this last month, did you underestimate the strength of the virus, did we reopen too soon, did we reopen without sufficient restrictions?”

Somewhat deflecting,[AHEM] Birx said the task force has used “different models” all along to understand not just what is happening in the United States but other countries that have been hit hard by the virus.

“We understand that our mortality rates are less than those three countries and that’s really due to the incredible work of our front-line hospital workers,” she continued. “But we understand that these number of infections has led to this level of mortality and our job now going forward is to do everything we can to prevent additional hospitalizations and additional mortality.”

Wallace took that opportunity to bring up videos and images of big Memorial Day crowds at beaches and events, asking Birx—who said last week that Americans could go to beaches if they stayed socially distant—if she was concerned as to what she was seeing.

“Well, you know, last time we spoke I was concerned about people coming together without masks even during the protests and now I’m very concerned when people go out and don’t maintain social distancing,” she replied.

During a separate interview on ABC’s This Week, Birx was asked by host Martha Raddatz whether she thought opening up these spaces was appropriate in hindsight.

“I think it’s our job as public health officials every day to be informing the public of what puts them at risk,” Birx answered. “And we’ve made it clear that there’s asymptomatic spread.”

“So we really want to be clear all the time that social distancing is absolutely critical,” she continued. “And if you can’t social distance and you’re outside, you must wear a mask.”

When Raddatz pointed out that social distancing and mask-wearing was not being witnessed at these packed spaces, Birx shrugged and merely replied that it is “our job to continue to communicate” that it is important to socially distance in these “different venues.”

In other words... Birx is admitting that they have been wrong since the start and that the models haven't predicted much of anything correct.

The reality is the reality.

No matter WHEN you reopen your state, the numbers are going to increase if the virus is still around. It doesn't respect borders or anything else. The longer you wait to reopen, is just the longer you wait before "YOUR" numbers will start to go up (as everyone would expect).

But even though playing the waiting game will just delay the inevitable, there will be real long term repercussions regarding your economy. Some states are doing much better than others right now, and economic models (which are 1000 times more accurate than any of these Covid models have been) show a sorry state of affairs for states that remain closed.

But then again... there really hasn't been much evidence that states who have stayed open have actually had a tougher time of it. Look at the border counties between Minnesota and the Dakota's.

According to most "experts" the counties on the Minnesota side should be doing better than the counties on the Dakota side because Minnesota has been shut down, while the Dakotas have not been.

But as it turns out there are almost no cases in most of those counties on either side. It seems almost (gasp) regional and situational and the evidence would appear that (double gasp) how those two counties "handled" things were pretty much irrelevant to the spread (or lack of spread) of the virus.

I just go back to weeks ago when I was trying to explain to the “reverend”, that flattening the curve didn’t change the number of people that will get infected. The volume under the curve is a constant, whether it’s a sharp spike or spread over months. He’s not bright. The shutdown originally was about not overwhelming the hospitals. They won’t be overwhelmed now.

Suicides on the rise amid stay-at-home order, Bay Area medical professionals say

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (KGO) -- Doctors at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek say they have seen more deaths by suicide during this quarantine period than deaths from the COVID-19 virus. The head of the trauma in the department believes mental health is suffering so much, it is time to end the shelter-in-place order.

"Personally I think it's time," said Dr. Mike deBoisblanc. "I think, originally, this (the shelter-in-place order) was put in place to flatten the curve and to make sure hospitals have the resources to take care of COVID patients. We have the current resources to do that and our other community health is suffering."

The numbers are unprecedented, he said.

"We've never seen numbers like this, in such a short period of time," he said. "I mean we've seen a year's worth of suicide attempts in the last four weeks."

Fine with me, Reverend...

But at this point you continue to print every article from anyone you can find that supports the misguided view that somehow all of these "red states" that didn't shut down tight enough are going to start seeing big numbers...

any day soon!

So it's not me who is actually NOT WILLING to wait and see and incapable of accepting the numbers for what they are today.

That's your deal, Reverend!

There are 70,000 people dead in eight states that did pretty much EVERYTHING that the left is demanding...

and they can't shut THE FUCK up about states that have actually been successful while NOT doing what the left demands.

Rather than accept that they have actually been more successful (not just marginally successful, but Ohio State vs Division II early season game successful, as in winning by several touchdowns and running up the score). You keep insisting that that Sisters of the poor is about to make a big comeback and act as if it's already happened because some MORON wrote about it.

But in reality, they are still down 8 touchdowns and it will only get worse, and what the MORON states is irrelevant.

So yeah Reverend.

Practice what you preach!

Stop insisting on bringing up things that HAVEN'T HAPPENED YET and focus either on what has already happened or what is happening today!

Of course, if you did that... then you'd have nothing to write about. Not like you are going to accept that a vast, vast majority of the people dying are dying in states doing everything you believe that they should. That is not "reality" to you.

What characterizes the nations that are the worst examples of dealing with the threat of the pandemic--the United States, Brazil, and Russia?

They all have leaders --Trump, Bolsonaro, Putin -- who early on downplayed and dismissed the seriousness of the pandemic, suggesting that it was nothing to be all that concerned about, just a sort of flu that it would soon go away on its own.

What characterizes the countries that are the best examples of dealing with the pandemic threat--South Korea, New Zealand, Germany?

They all have leaders who were quick to take the pandemic threat seriously, quickly establishing methods of containment and mitigation to keep it from spreading and shutting it down where it did appear.
