Is Covid-19 spiking?

Lot's of talk about the idea that Covid-19 is spiking, or that with the reopening of the country that we are looking at a "second wave". Most of this comes from anecdotal stories, isolated spikes in various areas, and plenty of "health officials" providing dire warnings.

But what does the data show?

The empirical data right now is showing a slow, but steady decline in deaths, with a fairly consistent number of new cases that seem to be neither rising or lowering to any significant degree. There are a handful of states that appear to be showing more cases, while some are going down. But you have to look at these "problem" states individually to really determine if there is actually a problem, or if there are other explanations besides a so-called "second wave".

Take Florida for instance. This has been on the radar of most everyone, but mainly those Covid-19 cheerleaders who seem to "want" to see more cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. Florida has seen an increase of cases for the past week or so that is being described in apocalyptic terms. Florida officials have suggested that an increase in testing and differences in reporting methods at least mostly explain the numbers. Obviously, the naysayers are not impressed.

But when you look at the underlying statistics, hospitalizations and deaths, the numbers have been stubbornly consistent. Over the past four weeks, there have been 992, 920, 871, 1379 new hospitalization, and 243, 243, 262, 277 new deaths (with the first numbers the most recent, and the last numbers from three weeks ago).

So, in fact, there has been a slight rise over the last week in hospitalizations, no rise in deaths, and both are down considerably from where it was three weeks ago (when much was still shut down). Would Florida health officials like these numbers to be lower? Of course. But keep in mind that these weekly death numbers are still considerably lower than New York, New Jersey, Illinois, California and a bunch of other states where things appear to be coming down. There would have to be several weeks of highly increased numbers before anyone could suggest that Florida is as bad as the New England and Great Lake states.

Now nobody (and I mean nobody) really knows anymore what will happen as the country reopens and whether or not we will see a second wave. But what the data does tell us is that unless the Covid-19 bug mutates into something different, the people catching it from being out and about are not likely to see many hospitalizations or deaths. If Florida (for instance) reports 2000 cases and those are mainly from the under 45 crowd most likely to be trying to get back to normal, then those people are much less likely to be either hospitalized or die from Covid. This seems to be something that many people fail to acknowledge, but can explain what appears to be a statistical disconnect between cases and the more serious fall out.

Horowitz: The new panic lie: Increased coronavirus hospitalizations and cases in the southwest

The health “experts” and the media propagating viral panic porn think people like us don’t understand arithmetic. They think they can manipulate headline stories warning of increased cases of COVID-19 in order to push more lockdowns, ignoring all the ways that more cases are being discovered, while the percentage of positive tests, new hospitalizations and deaths, and the lethality of the virus are all waning significantly.

“Arizona’s COVID-19 spread is ‘alarming’ and action is needed, experts warn,” read the title of an Arizona Republic article on Wednesday. Yahoo News breathlessly warned about a “spike” in all the southwestern states.

As is always the case, there is a grain of truth that is hugely distorted by numerous obfuscations of important facts and context. The truth is that new hospitalizations of people coming in for serious coronavirus infections are actually extremely low. What they are actually counting are the extra people coming in for all of the delayed health care caused by the lockdown. But thanks to universal testing in hospitals, they are discovering more asymptomatic cases than ever before, which had nothing to do with the original purpose of the hospital stay. Thus, they are blaming the fallout of the lockdown on the easing of the lockdown!
...
As you can see, if you break down the new admissions by date of admission, as this chart does, the numbers are actually near zero over the past week. There was only one new admission on Wednesday, the last day of reporting. What the media is focusing on is the cumulative total of beds in use, reflected in this chart.

NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

BETTER THINK DEEPLY ABOUT WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN.

ALL CAPITALIZED COMMENTS ARE MY ADDITIONS, BUT YOUBETTER READ ALL THIS CAREFULLY:

Health experts predict the virus will afflict the U.S. for months to come.

The coronavirus won’t be losing its grip on the United States any time soon, leading infectious disease experts said on Sunday, adding that they were uncertain how the viral spread would be affected by the patchwork of states reopening businesses and by large events like protests and President Trump’s upcoming campaign rallies.

VIRUS WILL NOT REST
“This virus is not going to rest” until it infects about 60 percent to 70 percent of the population, said Dr. Michael T. Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, in an appearance on “Fox News Sunday.”

WE ARE A LONG, LONG WAY FROM HERD IMMUNITY:
Experts have estimated that without a vaccine, about 70 percent of the population will need to be infected and develop immunity in order to stop the virus’s spread, a concept called herd immunity. The current number of confirmed American cases is over 2 million, less than 1 percent of the U.S. population, according to a New York Times database.

LESS THAN ONE PERCENT. SO WE HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO BEFORE HERD IMMUNITY AT 70%!

Dr. Osterholm said that recent data show the rate of infection has been level in eight states,
increasing in 22 states
and decreasing in the rest.

AND THE INCREASE IS NOT, REPEAT NOT, DUE TO MORE TESTING:
The increase is NOT simply due to more widely available testing,
the experts said, noting that Covid-19 hospitalizations are rising in several states.

“At this point, hospitals are at risk of getting overwhelmed and that is basically signaling to me that those states are already behind,” said Dr. Nahid Bhadelia, medical director of the special pathogens unit at Boston University School of Medicine, on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently said that by July 4, coronavirus deaths in the United States would likely jump from the current level of about 116,000 to somewhere between 124,000 and 140,000.

SOME STATES OPENED TOO EARLY:
Dr. Bhadelia said the rise in cases in some states in the South and West suggested that “we opened too early in those states.”

SOME HONESTY ABOUT THE PROTESTS:
Dr. Osterholm added that so far there had not been widespread indications that protests over police killings of African-Americans and racial injustice had led to a spike in cases. He and other experts have noted that the protests are taking place outdoors and that many participants are wearing masks, factors expected to limit spread of the virus.

“On the other hand, yelling, screaming, being exposed to tear gas or smoke, which causes coughing, being put into a holding cell overnight in jail if you’re arrested — all are reasons why you would expect to see more cases,” Dr. Osterholm said.

AND SOME MORE HONESTY HERE:
The risk of viral spread at a rally like the one President Trump has planned for next weekend in Oklahoma is much higher, the experts said, because the rally will be indoors in a large arena and there will no requirement that attendees wear masks.

AND WHAT EXPERT WAS THAT

These experts:

Over 1,000 health professionals sign a letter saying, Don't shut down protests using coronavirus concerns as an excuse.

(CNN)A group of health and medical colleagues has penned an open letter to express their concern that protests around the United States could be shut down under the guise of coronavirus health concerns.

The letter -- which went on to draw more than 1,200 signatures -- focuses on techniques to reduce harm to people protesting racial injustice.

"We created the letter in response to emerging narratives that seemed to malign demonstrations as risky for the public health because of Covid-19," according to the letter writers, many of whom are part of the University of Washington's Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
"Instead, we wanted to present a narrative that prioritizes opposition to racism as vital to the public health, including the epidemic response. We believe that the way forward is not to suppress protests in the name of public health but to respond to protesters demands in the name of public health, thereby addressing multiple public health crises."

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

And as for rat's usual sort of rant, see the rest of Dr. Fauci's statement:
_______________

Many experts fear attempts to reopen shuttered state economies and mass protests over police brutality and structural racism could contribute to a second surge in cases.

But Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases who has been sidelined by the White House since April, after breaking with Donald Trump’s position on reopening the economy, told CNN on Friday increases in cases in several states were not necessarily indicative of a “second spike” of infections.

“When you start to see increases in hospitalisation, that’s a surefire situation that you’ve got to pay close attention to,” Fauci said.

“It is not inevitable that you will have a so-called ‘second wave’ in the fall, or even a massive increase if you approach it in the proper way,” he added, advising people to maintain social distancing and to continue to wear masks in public.
____________

In other words, the danger is definitely there, but as he said elsewhere, protesting is so important that those who do it should exercise all possible caution.

Trump loses 2 pivotal allies in his anti-kneeling crusade: NASCAR and the NFL
Politico
Meridith McGraw
,Politico•June 14, 2020
President Donald Trump has long had two cherished American institutions standing beside him as he railed against athletes taking a knee during the national anthem: NASCAR and the NFL.

This week, they both started to walk away.

Bending to the cultural moment, NASCAR and the NFL in recent days reversed course on their approach to athletes protesting racial injustice. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he had been wrong for not listening to protesting players earlier and encouraged “all to speak out and peacefully protest.” Meanwhile, NASCAR relaxed rules barring kneeling during the national anthem and banned Confederate flags from its events. Within days, a NASCAR driver was circling a track in a race car emblazoned with #BlackLivesMatter and a NASCAR official was taking a knee during prerace ceremonies
