Will we have a "V" or "U" shaped recovery as Trump predicts?

Biggest one month gain in jobs since 1939... "unexpectedly"!

Economist were actually believing that the unemployment rate would go up (not down) and that we would see another loss of jobs. In fact, the biggest naysayers were expecting to see an unemployment rate of around 20% and another 8% drop in the non-farm jobs number.

Now quite obviously, we are in uncharted territories. We are relying on these economists to use their best judgement and common sense, since we have no real historical lock down numbers to fall back on. Apparently most economists are just not very good when they have to use their best judgement and common sense to make projections.

Obviously, these numbers are not (and will not) be consistent. Any areas that had massive riots will likely continue to suffer, and many businesses that were on the fence about reopening will likely be unable to reopen given the destruction and looting that took place. Even large chains like Target are simply looking at not repairing or reopening some of these stores that were destroyed in these urban areas.

Marines keep their word.

The phony protesters near Lafayette park were not peaceful and are not real. They are terrorists using idle hate filled students to burn and destroy. They were abusing and disrespecting the police when the police were preparing the area for the 1900 curfew. Jim, this is the new nihilism. See Dan Henninger in WSJ today.

Marines support the police in harm’s way.

Did you forget that President Bush used active duty Marines to quell the riots in LA? President Trump has countless cities and some snowflake governors and mayors wetting themselves in the use of force to protect innocent lives and property. The AG of Massachusetts thinks burning property is good protest. Three more policemen were stabbed and shot in NYC last night. Think about it. Should he be upset about the obvious failure in leadership? Where are you Jim?

Marines go to the fight.

No one divided this country more than Obama. He abandoned our black brothers and sisters. He gave guns to the cartels. He apologized for our precious sacrifice and generosity overseas. You remember, he fired you.

President Trump has done more to help our minority brothers and sisters in three years than anyone in the last fifty. Ask the black pastors. Ask the leaders of the black colleges and universities. He got them funded. Ask them about the prison reform which ended the draconian sentences imposed on young black men by the law enacted by Biden and his hacks. You need to bone up on your homework and stop listening to Uncle Leon.

I understand, you had to stick to the assigned narrative which did not include three years of corrupt investigations and evidence to destroy this President, his office, and his lawful free election. Nancy has no tolerance for dissent in the ranks—including those with stars.

You said nothing of the ugly, hate filled, disgraceful comments of Pelosi, Schumer, Perez and other Democrat hacks defaming the President and his office. You said nothing of the unlawful sanctuary cities and the unlawful release of hoodlums. You said nothing of the resistance movement to paralyze our courts and our government operations. You said nothing of the obstruction and subversion of our immigration laws. You said nothing of MS-13 killers and the drug cartels who own huge sections of our major cities. Jim, do you think that rhetoric and those corrupt actions were inspiring and unifying? Do you think the DI’s at Parris Island would find such behavior as unifying?

Maybe, your problem, is a lot deeper. Perhaps you ought to explain how and why you (and John Allen), as CG Central Command, did not engage and take out Iranian Major General Soleimani who roamed the Middle East and wreaked havoc and death on our American boys with his infamous IEDs?

Why did it take President Trump to have the instincts and balls to take him out (of course over the objection the geniuses in the Pentagon)?

Looks like the Persian mullahs were a one horse sleigh and Trump nailed the horse… forever. It has been quiet ever since. Perhaps, your anger is borne of embarrassment for your own failure as the leader of Central Command. Did you applaud when the President recognized the central problem in the Middle East? Did you applaud the President when he wanted to save American lives by bringing them home in one piece?

“Trump has started to echo Nixon’s famous invocation of a supportive ‘silent majority.’ But he is the only president in the history of public opinion polling who has never had a majority of Americans on his side, even on his first day in office, and he has never shown much interest in courting skeptics rather than attacking them.

"Winning a second term will likely require him to eke out a narrow margin in the electoral college, very possibly without a popular-vote plurality once again.

Chicago’s South Side Left With Few Food Options After Weekend Violence

CHICAGO (CBS) — It was bad before and it’s even worse now.

Food deserts in some South Side communities have even fewer choices for groceries after the weekend’s violence.

CBS 2’s Marissa Parra has more from Bronzeville with a look at how it’s impacting the community.

For neighbors, the Jewel-Osco on 75th is the grocery store. But no longer.

“It’s kind of a sad thing to think about,” said resident William Wright. “I take my grandma here every Sunday.”

On Sunday night, it was ravaged by looters, as you can see by the aftermath captured in video from the next day, leaving neighbors frustrated.

“It’s not what you do. It’s how do you do it,” Wright said. “What did we accomplish, aside from take our property value down and embarrass ourselves?”

Wright, his grandmother and so many around here are trying to figure out which stores on the South Side are even left right now.

Chicago now has food deserts in places that weren’t food deserts before.

“Bronzeville Mariano’s was looted, the Walmart on 47th was looted. Jewel,” said activist William Calloway.

And the food deserts that were there before are worse now.

“Now you have to go out of your way to get this stuff,” said activist Emir Lions. “People that don’t have a car. People that do not have family and friends.”

“Some seniors can’t travel,” added Calloway.

Instead, CBS 2 saw seniors taking buses, walking miles with only what their hands could carry. Calloway said neighborhoods without access to pharmacies or grocery stores could get worse if the city doesn’t find solutions soon.

“If you have people that are hungry, that are quite angry already, that could escalate to something more disastrous,” Calloway said.

“The looting and the rioting has nothing to do with the protest, but the rage and despair is what we need to start paying attention to,” Lions said. “Because if you don’t it’s going to continue.”

The biggest fear is that some of these stores won’t come back. Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th) said she and other aldermen are trying to find solutions.

For example the Walgreens off of Stony Island has a senior living facility across from it. She said they’ll soon be doing pharmacy delivery for those who can’t cross the street and get their medication anymore.

Associated Press
AP FACT CHECK: Trump denies tear gas use despite evidence

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump and some of his supporters are claiming authorities did not use tear gas against people in a crackdown outside the White House this week. There's evidence they did.

Law enforcement officials shy away from describing crowd-dispersing chemical tools as tear gas; it evokes police gassing citizens or the horrors of war. But giving those tools a more antiseptic name does not change the reality on the ground.

Federal institutions such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense have listed tear gas as the common term for riot-control agents. Whether the common or formal term is used, the effects on people are the same.

Those effects were well documented when authorities forcefully cleared a crowd from outside the White House before Trump walked to St. John's Church across Lafayette Park on Monday to be photographed holding a Bible.

“They didn’t use tear gas,” Trump said Wednesday on Fox News Radio. The U.S. Park Police denied using tear gas, yet acknowledged deploying a pepper compound, which the CDC and other scientific organizations list as one form of tear gas.

Authorities, who came from more than a half-dozen agencies besides the Park Police, set loose several wafting compounds, causing people to cough and gag as they scattered, their eyes red and streaming in some cases. They displayed the results of exposure to tear gas — tears, for example.

“Tear gas is anything that makes you cry,” said Dr. Lynn Goldman, dean of the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, speaking of chemicals used in crowd dispersal. “Pepper spray is a tear gas. But there are all kinds of other ones, too.”

Compounds that are listed as riot-control agents make people temporarily unable to function by irritating their eyes, mouth, throat, lungs and skin, the CDC says. They are “sometimes referred to as ‘tear gas,’” says a CDC fact sheet.

The Handbook of Toxicology of Chemical Warfare Agents also uses tear gas as an informal umbrella term for riot-control agents and cites pepper spray as one kind. In the unrest near the White House, officers shot plastic balls with pepper powder from what looked like souped-up paintball guns, and dispersed other compounds in a stinging fog.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

The book also says riot-control agents are “popularly referred to as ‘tear gas’ or ‘pepper spray.'" It says they may be combined with an explosive substance in grenades, released in a smoke of particles from handheld devices or sprayed in a solution.

The disabling effects of tear gas are designed to be short-lived, but the CDC says prolonged exposure “may lead to long-term effects such as eye problems including scarring, glaucoma, and cataracts, and may possibly cause breathing problems such as asthma.”

An Army research institute paper in 2009 cites riot-control agents and tear gas interchangeably. It says tear gas is something of a misnomer, because the agents tend not to be gaseous and modern compounds can affect a wider variety of organs as well as the eyes, lungs and digestive tract that are historically the targets of tear gas.

Dr. Sven-Eric Jordt researches tear gas agents and chemical exposure injuries in his lab at the Duke University School of Medicine's Integrated Toxicology and Environmental Health Program.

He said newer compounds, which may have been used in the “pepper ball” projectiles deployed at the protest, might or might not fit a traditional definition of tear gas but are as potent and come with scant research on their safety. Any difference is semantic, he said.

“There's been very little research on tear gas being done in the United States,” he said, and “no research backing up the use levels that are deployed now.”

Jordt said the two main categories of crowd-clearing irritants — known as CS and OC — both activate the pain-sensing nervous system sharply, which in turn can make the body more susceptible to a virus. “I'm just very concerned this might increase the likelihood of infection” in the coronavirus pandemic, he said, or trigger more extreme reactions in people who have the virus but are not showing symptoms.

“To use these highly irritating agents on protesters is not a good idea," he said. “It's really shocking that it is used to that extent.”

Black Lives Matter sues Trump administration over use of force on D.C. protesters

Black Lives Matter filed suit against President Donald Trump and his administration on Thursday, alleging their civil rights and First Amendment right were violated after peaceful protesters were forced out of Lafayette Square so Trump could take a photo in front of a nearby church.

Protesters demonstrating peacefully against police violence in the wake of George Floyd’s were forced out of the square in Washington, D.C., on Monday by U.S. Park Police and the National Guard. Journalists and protesters alike reported that the otherwise peaceful demonstration was met with authorities using horses, projectiles and gas to force them out.

Clearing out the square came just moments before Trump left the White House and came to a stop at St. John's Episcopal Church, where he posed for a photo with a Bible.

The D.C. chapter of the activist organization filed the suit along with the American Civil Liberties Union against the administration for violating their First Amendment and Fourth rights, which protect the right to protest and protect against unreasonable search and seizure.

Authorities fired flash-bang shells, tear gas, smoke canisters, pepper balls, and rubber bullets into the crowd, the suit said. U.S. Park Police has disputed its officers used tear gas on protesters during the incident.

“The conspiracy targeted Plaintiffs’ protected First Amendment activities because Defendants held animus towards Plaintiffs’ viewpoints,” the lawsuit said. “The violent actions of the conspirators directly and unlawfully interfered with these activities.”

BLM and the ACLU are asking for a jury trial in the case, according the to suit filed in the U.S. District Court for Washington D.C.. The groups are also asking for a judge to grant relief, issuing an injunction to stop the administration from continued use of force against protesters.

"Defendants’ actions to shut down the Lafayette Square demonstration is the manifestation of the very despotism against which the First Amendment was intended to protect," the suit said.

The Department of Justice did not immediately respond to a NBC News request for comment on the lawsuit.

Attorney General William Barr, who is also named in the lawsuit, defended the use of force on protesters on Thursday. Barr alleged the administration was provoked by increasing violence.

"On Monday we were still facing very large demonstrations that were belligerent and throwing projectiles," Barr said, adding that "it’s very important to use sufficient forces — law enforcement to establish law and order in a city when you have riots running. If you use insufficient resources, it’s dangerous for everybody."

Multiple news outlets with reporters at the scene on Monday have contradicted claims of escalating violence, noting that the group had been in the park for hours without any notable incidents of aggression.

How Mattis Reached His Breaking Point

“In Mattis’s eyes, the appearance of the two top military leaders appeared to condone an unprovoked use of force. The nonpartisan military that Mattis had served for nearly five decades was being featured as decoration for a photo op, and Mattis fumed that the president was using the leaders who replaced him at the Defense Department to further divide the nation, according to four people familiar with his thinking.

“He was especially upset to see Milley — whom Mattis believed had sought to curry favor with Trump when he was defense secretary — appear in his Army combat uniform at a peaceful demonstration. That jarring image highlighted the military’s involvement in a heavy-handed crackdown on civilians.

“With that, the military historian and retired Marine general decided it was time to call out the damage he saw Trump doing to the country.”
