Economy on the rebound!

ECONOMY: June private payrolls rose 2.37 million and there was a big positive revision for May, ADP says

  • Private payrolls rose by 2.369 million in June, a bit below the 2.5 million estimate from economists surveyed by Dow Jones, according to ADP.
  • May’s number saw a stunning revision, going from an initially reported loss of 2.76 million to a gain of 3.065 million.
  • Hospitality industry workers saw the biggest gain, with 961,000 hires, while small businesses overall added 937,000.

So initially the May labor report was so confusing that most economist had it wrong by over 10 million jobs (were expecting a loss of several million, when we saw the single largest monthly gain). The ADP is a precursor for the BLS Government job report due out soon.

How well the economy rebounds will probably play as big of a part as anything else as it pertains to the 2020 election. Short of a huge surge in Covid-19 deaths come fall, I would think that the electorate will be focused on the future (and not an uncontrollable medical issue that we have been dealing with for months at that point).

But same holds true for this early summer data. This will wear off quickly if there is any sort of economic setback between now and fall. The numbers in August and September will probably have the most impact on the election as Octobers are generally too late to really process before an election and most people have a gut feeling about how things are going at that stage.

Britain Confirms Seeing US Intelligence On Russian Bounty Plan

London: Britain's Defence Secretary Ben Wallace on Tuesday confirmed having seen US intelligence briefings about alleged Russian bounties offered to Afghan terrorists to kill American troops.

"I am aware of the intelligence," Wallace told a parliamentary defence sub-committee hearing when asked specifically about the alleged Russian bounties.

"I can't comment on intelligence matters other than to say we take lots of measures to defend and make sure our soldiers, men and women of our armed forces, when they are deployed, are kept safe."

The New York Times and other US media said Washington began sharing its intelligence with London last week.

US President Donald Trump initially denied being briefed about the findings and the White House argued on Monday there was "no consensus" among intelligence agencies about their veracity.

Russia has flatly rejected suggestions it would pay Taliban soldiers to kill US troops.

But Wallace's comments suggest the findings were conclusive enough for the United States to alert its close ally about the potential dangers posed to its own forces in Afghanistan.

"I don't think I would say that there is any greater danger (to UK forces) than the danger they face every day from Al-Qaeda or indeed other forces in Afghanistan," Wallace said.

Hoover Institute fellow Dr. Scott Atlas criticized policy proposals that would continue to keep schools closed after summer. In an interview Monday night with Tucker Carlson, Atlas also weighed in on a possible second lockdown following the flareup of new coronavirus cases, calling it "the most irrational public policy probably in modern history"

"There's no reason for a lockdown when we have something happening we actually have no problem with," Atlas said. "These do not translate into people going into respirators. The hospitalization phase is half the length that they were before. We are doing very well with this, but the point about the schools is really critical because this is the most irrational public policy probably in modern history... There is no science behind having children not attend schools. There is zero science for having children wear masks or have spacing when they have zero risk from the disease."

And what are you going to do if they continue to "not" correlate to a large spike in ICU visits, ventilators, or deaths?

Are you really going to continue to fall in line with the Covid fear porn that suggests that catching a mild coronavirus (which is quite literally a cold) is now something horrifying and now some sort of national disaster?

The whole idea of mitigating and flattening the curve was to not put too much burden on our hospital system up front. Other than a handful of politicians and political types here and there demanding that their hospital system is either "in danger" or "is heading towards" some sort of shortage... (politicians who cried wolf)

There has not been a single confirmed situation anywhere that suggests hospitals have had any difficulty treating anyone for Covid. There are no realistic calls for back up hospitals or more personnel, or anything else being requested by any Governors anywhere.

[Wonder why they stopped reporting? I do.]

“The change came one day after the hospitals reported their base intensive care capacity had hit 100 percent for the first time during the pandemic, with projections showing the institutions — which together comprise the world’s largest medical complex — were on pace to exceed their ‘unsustainable surge capacity’ by July 6.”

KEY FACTS
The Washington Post reported Sunday that the Texas Medical Center, the world’s largest medical complex located in Houston, “quietly” removed ICU data from its website, which posts regular updates about its efforts against Covid-19

Data released by the medical center Thursday said 100% of their regular ICU beds were full, setting off alarm bells for some politicians and public health experts, but center officials said more beds could be added to accommodate a possible surge.

Also Thursday: Gov. Greg Abbott ordered Houston to pause elective surgeries to keep beds available for coronavirus patients after the number of hospitalized patients hit record highs for two straight weeks.

The medical center’s website claims in a popup that an “incomplete slide deck” was posted yesterday, and promised “new slides. . .will be released later today [and] will provide a more comprehensive and accurate description of the current status.”

An NBC News reporter tweeted that the medical center told him Sunday that new data was being compiled for release because “After the events of this week, everyone realized the capacity question was complicated and misunderstood.”

Texas Medical Center did not respond to a request for comment by Forbes.

U.S.—A survey of leading physicians unanimously agreed that the best response to COVID-19 is for the government to lock everything down, then reopen, then lock down again, then reopen again and to just keep doing that until everyone completely loses their minds. "Humanity's will to live is not infinite," said Dr. Fostein of Columbia Medical University. "I'm confident we can crush the collective human spirit into a fine powder with just a few more lockdowns and reopenings."

Fostein says that humanity is on track to go into a collective nervous breakdown after several more lockdowns and reopenings, which doctors agree will lead to a new age of compliance. "At that point, we can just strap everybody down, sedate them, and do what needs to be done to get America back on track."

Doctors defended the "lockdown-reopen infinite loop" strategy, citing the fact that not everyone listens to absolutely every word they say without question. "We are tired of being questioned," said Dr. Whiltern of Newbury Medical Authority. "Also, watching everybody go nuts is going to be a blast."

Most physicians think that the initial stages of mental breakdown have already begun. "People have been losing it quite a bit, sure. Looting, canceling Aunt Jemima, tearing down statues of legit American icons, trying to abolish cops... but this is just the beginning. We can do better. We will do better."

Republican Leaders Want to End Obamacare. Their Voters Are Expanding It.
Oklahoma is the latest state where voters, in choosing to expand Medicaid, have delivered a rebuke to their elected officials.

Anonymous said...

removing the bias bullshit NYT filter:

Oklahoma voters narrowly approved a state question to expand Medicaid to cover more low-income residents.

With all precincts reporting Tuesday, State Question 802, which asked voters to expand Medicaid, passed by 6,488 votes.

The question will enshrine Medicaid expansion in Oklahoma’s constitution — effectively preventing Oklahoma’s GOP-controlled Legislature and Republican governor from limiting or undoing the expansion.

After nearly a decade of waiting on politicians to act, Oklahomans decided on Tuesday to take health care into their own hands, Yes on 802 campaign manager Amber England said in a statement.

"In the middle of a pandemic, Oklahomans stepped up and delivered life-saving care for nearly 200,000 of our neighbors, took action to keep our rural hospitals open, and brought our tax dollars home to protect jobs and boost our local economy," she said.

The campaign for SQ 802 was launched after years of legislative inaction on Medicaid expansion. The Yes on 802 campaign turned in a record number of signatures to qualify the question for the ballot.

But the majority of Oklahoma's counties opposed the expansion. A mere seven of the state's 77 counties, including Oklahoma and Tulsa, approved the question.

John Tidwell, State Director of Americans for Prosperity and Chairman of the Vote No on 802 Association, said the lack of widespread support for the question is telling.

"Results are clear: a plan that claims to ‘save rural health care’ was overwhelming rejected by rural communities across Oklahoma," he said in a statement. "Voters in more than 90% of Oklahoma counties voted against SQ802."

Oklahoma will have to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act by July 1, 2021. The federal government will cover 90% of the costs, with the state covering the remaining 10%.

The Oklahoma Health Care Authority estimates Oklahoma’s share of Medicaid expansion would amount to about $164 million annually to cover roughly 200,000 additional Medicaid recipients. State health officials have noted costs could rise due to skyrocketing unemployment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The state spends about $6 billion annually on its current Medicaid program, which covers about 800,000 Oklahomans.

Gov. Kevin Stitt, perhaps one of the most outspoken critics of the state question, said expanding Medicaid is not practical because of the costs to the state. Stitt has said Oklahoma may already be facing a $1 billion budget deficit in fiscal year 2022.

As for how the state pays for Medicaid expansion, Stitt said the state legislators will have a difficult time finding the money.

“You either pay for that by reducing roads and bridge funding, education funding, public safety funding or you raise taxes," he said. "As your governor, I’m not raising taxes.”

But earlier this year, Stitt vetoed the funding mechanism for his plan to expand Medicaid. The funding did not necessitate a tax increase or cuts to state agencies.

ALBANY — The parent company of St. Peter’s Health Partners, which employs thousands of people at local hospitals and physician practices, informed employees Monday that job cuts, extended furloughs and schedule reductions are necessary in the wake of pandemic-driven revenue losses.

St. Peter’s President and CEO James Reed forwarded the message from Trinity Health President and CEO Mike Slubowski to employees at noon Monday, with his own emailed addendum stating that “the coming days, weeks and months will be difficult.” He did not specify whether or to what extent the cuts will be felt across the St. Peter’s health system, and a spokesperson for the hospital did not respond to questions about this either.

[...]

Trinity Health oversees 92 hospitals and 106 continuing care locations in 22 states, including St. Peter’s, which itself oversees four hospital campuses in Albany and Troy and employs roughly 12,000 people in the Capital Region.

Slubowski said the organization is losing millions of dollars each day, even as elective surgeries and outpatient care resumes, and is projecting $2 billion less in operating revenue next fiscal year than previous levels.

“And that assumes there are no more significant surges of inpatients with COVID-19, since that will require more inpatient resources and will negatively impact consumer confidence in coming back for outpatient and elective services,” he wrote.

St. Peter’s sustained roughly $40 million in operating losses as a result of the pandemic, Reed told the Albany Business Review earlier this month.

Slubowski on Monday said that although Trinity received “substantial” grants through the CARES Act, the money has already been spent to cover several months’ worth of operating losses and does not provide relief going forward. He also said it is “not likely” that more sizable funding is coming. The national Catholic health system had already implemented furloughs and pay cuts in April to offset COVID-19 losses.

Trinity will focus the initial job cuts, furloughs and schedule reductions in non-clinical, administrative areas, including its system office. It will also consider accommodating colleagues who volunteer for severance-eligible reductions, reduced hours or furlough during this time, Slubowski said.

A federal judge in Washington struck down a Trump administration policy late Tuesday that bars most Central Americans and other migrants from requesting asylum at the southern border, saying the government failed to justify making the sudden change last July without public notice or comment.

The policy is aimed at blocking Central American migration by requiring asylum seekers from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and elsewhere to first apply for asylum in countries they pass through on the way to the United States, particularly Mexico or Guatemala.

U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly of Washington, D.C., a held that the administration “unlawfully promulgated” the rule, failing to show it was in the public interest to stealthily implement the change and bypass the Administrative Procedure Act.

Yet, you're the only one who continues to bring him into every conversation.

I assume that of the 327 million Americans, plenty don't give a rip about what is going to happen in November. They are more worried about keeping their jobs, paying their bills, not losing their houses... things important to them.

we have learned that even Russian efforts to slaughter American troops in cold blood do not faze this president. Mr. Trump brushes off the information, evades responsibility and fails to take action — not even lodging a diplomatic protest. Now Mr. Putin knows he can kill Americans with impunity.

What must we conclude from all this? At best, our commander in chief is utterly derelict in his duties, presiding over a dangerously dysfunctional national security process that is putting our country and those who wear its uniform at great risk. At worst, the White House is being run by liars and wimps catering to a tyrannical president who is actively advancing our arch adversary’s nefarious interests.

Deregulation of duty as the Commander in Chief.

The White House has admitted that Trump never read a February written briefing on the Russian bounties that were placed on US troops.

From all the reports, both George W Bush and President Obama read the daily intelligence briefings.

He refuses to read his intelligence briefings.

If President Hillary Clinton had done the same thing you would be shouting #impeachment

More cracking in the Republican party. Former members of the President George W Bush administration have created a super pac.

Hundreds of former members of the George W. Bush administration have formed a super PAC to support former Vice President Joe Biden, saying they are alarmed by President Trump’s conduct in office.

The group, dubbed 43 Alumni for Joe Biden, officially launched Wednesday. The group includes former Cabinet officials and other senior administration members who say they think the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee can “restore dignity” to the White House.

ADVERTISING

“We’re looking for the largest conglomerate of folks who want to help, whether it’s writing a check, making phone calls, helping to get out the vote, basic campaign 101. We just feel the time now is to restore dignity to the White House, and the current gentleman is not, so that’s why we’re supporting Joe Biden,” said Jennifer Millikin, a committee member of the group who served in the General Services Administration under Bush and the Small Business Administration under Trump.

Members of the group began reaching out to other alumni early last month and saw a quick response among former staffers who were uncomfortable with the Trump administration. The super PAC intends to make public some of its high-profile members in the coming weeks.

“We’ve only been active since June 2, so less than a month, and we have hundreds of former W alumni that are living nationwide and have worked at every single agency including the White House when we were there,” Millikin said in an interview.

“The one common theme between us all is that we understand what it was like working for an administration. We know right now it’s not like that,” she added.

The creation of the group comes amid mounting criticism of Trump over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, a cratering economy and civil unrest over systemic racism and police brutality. The president has seen his approval numbers sink, and some recent surveys have shown Trump trailing Biden by double digits.

43 Alumni for Biden joins a slate of other GOP groups that have formed to oppose Trump, including The Lincoln Project, which has seen its profile rise over its biting attack ads against Trump.

The newest super PAC intends to separate itself from other groups by solely focusing on positive messages to reinforce Biden’s campaign.

“We are the only group within these other groups that were all 43 alums,” said Millikin. “And unlike ... The Lincoln Project and the other groups that we know of, they’re spending tons of money on ads and things of that nature, which is great. We’re going to raise money as well, we’re a super PAC, but our focus is not negative.”

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday approved a $150 million cut to the LAPD's budget for the next fiscal year, a move that followed activists' mounting calls to "defund the police."

The council voted 12-2 with Councilmen John Lee and Joe Buscaino voting in opposition to the decision.
