In Stevens’s new book, “It Was All a Lie: How the Republican Party Became Donald Trump,” he tells the story of his long career in politics and how the party he once worked for has been subsumed by nativism, bigotry, and cruelty. But Stevens doesn’t believe that the G.O.P. was taken over by someone entirely alien to its ideology or behavior. As he writes, “How do you abandon deeply held beliefs about character, personal responsibility, foreign policy, and the national debt in a matter of months? You don’t. The obvious answer is those beliefs weren’t deeply held.”
I recently spoke by phone with Stevens, who was in Vermont. During our conversation, which has been edited for length and clarity, we discussed what a Romney Presidency might have looked like, the ethics of campaign consultants, and how we should evaluate the George W. Bush years.
Your book differs from others in arguing not that the Republican Party has gone wrong with Donald Trump, but that the Republican Party has been going wrong for a very long time. What is the difference in your mind between those two critiques, and why did you think it was important to make the latter one?
I think I wanted to believe for a long time that when Donald Trump came along he was hijacking the Party. A lot of people were wrong about Trump in 2016, but it’s hard to find somebody more wrong than I was. I predicted he wouldn’t win the primary, and I predicted he wouldn’t win the general election. In retrospect, a lot of that was that I didn’t want to believe it. He says he has ninety-five per cent Republican approval, and that’s probably an exaggeration, but let’s say it is eighty-nine per cent or so. You look at what Trump is saying, and the degree to which the Party is comfortable with it, and I don’t know what conclusion to come to other than that Trump very well suits the Republican Party. In the book, I trace the history of the Party from the post-World War Two era, and Trump is one direction the Party could have gone in. I don’t know how else to say it, but it did go in that direction.
Without getting into a question about cause and effect, and how the universe functions, and whether a different future was possible, what do you think held the Republican Party together pre-Trump, and what was attractive to you about it?
What appealed to me was a party that believed in personal responsibility, that character counts, and that was strong on Russia and free trade, and strongly pro legal immigration. It’s not just that the Party has drifted away from those principles, like parties do. As far as I can tell, the Party is actively against every one of them. We’re the “character doesn’t count” party. We’re the anti-personal-responsibility party. We’re the pro-Putin party. I think the only conclusion is that a party that said it believed in these things didn’t really believe in them. If a George Wallace type had run in the Democratic primary in 2016, would that person have won? No. Had that person by some freak accident won, would the Party establishment have coalesced around him? No. They would have said, “This isn’t what the Democratic Party stands for.”

Over the last few years, the Trump administration has fought to shape the 2020 census to its political benefit and the benefit of the Republican Party. In 2018, it sought to introduce a citizenship question on the census itself, to reduce response rates among immigrant communities. Then, after that was rebuffed by the Supreme Court, it tried to exclude unauthorized immigrants altogether, in direct conflict with the Constitution, which calls on Congress to count “the whole number of persons in each State.” Now it wants to cut the census short and deliver it uncompleted — a last-ditch effort to rig the nation’s politics for the sake of its exclusionary political vision.
The goal is to freeze political representation in place as much as possible; to keep demographic change — the growing share of Americans who are Black, Hispanic and Asian-American — from swamping the Republican Party’s ability to win national elections with a white, heavily rural minority.
The census, as Trump and his allies correctly understand, is a critical source of dynamism within the American political system. A political majority (or in Trump’s case, a minority) can try to insulate itself from demographic shifts and transformations, but the fact of mandatory reapportionment makes that difficult. New people — whether immigrants or Americans moving from place to place — will always mean new politics.
It is ironic, then, that the origin of the census lies less in principles of democratic representation, and more in the interests of slaveholders, who wanted political recognition of their slave wealth, with constitutional assurance that this peculiar interest would always weigh on future apportionment. But in a perfect example of unintended consequences, the slaveholders’ push for a census would help lay the groundwork for the end of the institution itself.

The FBI’s most recent gun-sale figures are stunning. They show that in July the bureau carried out 3.6 million background checks, the third highest month on record. Social Media Election Interference
Social media giants Twitter and Facebook fully entered the election season this week by committing some blatant election interference. But they only seem to be fact-checking and censoring Republicans and not Democrats. With all the emphasis on a small amount of foreign activity since the last election, we are failing to notice and act on the real danger of American companies putting their fingers on the scales.
Twitter suspended the official Trump campaign account and Facebook removed a video by the Trump campaign. Both claimed these acts were because the video mischaracterized information about COVID-19. The video in question was an interview given by the President of the United States to FOX News.
“In the removed video, President Trump can be heard in a phone interview saying schools should open. He goes on to say, “If you look at children, children are almost — and I would almost say definitely — but almost immune from this disease,” and that they have stronger immune systems.”
This statement is certainly questionable and while the president accurately notes that children have stronger immune systems and experience milder symptoms he pushes the line.
“They get it and can transmit it, but they get it less and transmit it less than adults,” said Theodore Ruel, chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Global Health at the University of California at San Francisco. He said the word “immunity” is incorrect in this context but that children, especially younger ones, are less of a risk than adults.”
But President Trump stopped short of saying children were actually immune so there is no direct falsehood in his statement, just an overemphasis toward immunity. But that was enough to trigger the Silicon Valley thought police.
The same scrutiny was not applied to a Democrat party video which contained a 100% verifiable falsehood of the 2+2=5 variety, That account put the following statement out on both Twitter and Facebook accompanied by video.
“WATCH: Trump adviser Jason Miller is asked three (3) times whether the Trump administration or campaign would accept foreign assistance in this election. Three (3) times, he refuses to say no.”
The problem is at :32 in the very video they provided, he clearly says “No, we’re going to beat Joe Biden fair and square”. That is not a maybe, that is a clear and definitive “No”. Yet that video remains up on both Twitter and Facebook despite numerous complaints to both platforms about it being an outright lie.
To make this situation even more Orwellian, the announcement of the Trump campaign censorship came from Twitter communications representative Nick Pacilio, who prior to that position was Press Secretary for Sen. Kamala Harris, a former Democrat Presidential candidate and a front-runner to be Joe Biden’s pick for his Vice Presidential candidate. Harris herself tried to get President Trump completely silenced on Twitter while campaigning last year.
“Senator Kamala Harris of California, who is running to be the Democratic presidential nominee, called on Twitter this month to suspend Mr. Trump’s account. In a letter to Twitter’s chief executive, Jack Dorsey, Ms. Harris said the president’s tweets were “blatant threats” that clearly violated Twitter’s policies.”
Suppressing communications from President Trump while not holding Democrats to the same standard could fairly be termed an in-kind contribution by both platforms to the Biden campaign. Twitter and Facebook are welcome to register as political action committees if they want to do electioneering in favor of their chosen candidate. But they have not and this is a dangerous precedent to allow. The public must have access to the information needed to make informed choices, not a redacted version favoring one side.

July marked the third straight month that the economy added jobs on net. However, even with the past several months of gains, the economy has not made up the entirety of the lost jobs since the start of the pandemic – especially after April’s record drop of more than 20 million payrolls.
In July, the number of unemployed individuals on temporary layoffs fell by 1.3 million to 9.2 million. That was half of April’s level, as Americans began returning to work following temporary virus-related business closures. However, the number of permanent job losers held steady in July over the prior month at 2.9 million, underscoring the longer-lasting impact to the labor market due to the pandemic.
The services sector again led non-farm payroll gains in July, after the services economy was cut deeply by shelter in place orders and business closures earlier on this year. The leisure and hospitality industry added back 592,000 jobs after gaining nearly 2 million in June, and retail trade jobs increased by 258,000 in July after a rise of more than 800,000 during the prior month.
Within services, information-related industries were the only group to shed jobs on net in July, losing 15,000. Within the goods-producing sector, mining and logging jobs fell by 7,000.
Government jobs rose by 301,000 in July, after an increase of 54,000 in June.
Elsewhere, the jobless rate improved by a greater than expected margin to 10.2% in July from 11.1% in June. However, the unemployment rate remained above the the Global Financial Crisis peak of 10.0%, and more than double the 3.5% rate from February before the spread of the pandemic in the U.S.
Average hourly wages unexpectedly rose on a month over month basis by 0.2%, following a revised 1.3% decline in June. Consensus economists had expected to see average hourly earnings moderate and decline 0.5% on a monthly basis, due to compositional effects as low-wage workers reentered the workforce following shutdowns.

As had been the case since the start of the pandemic, the dispersion among estimates for July’s change in non-farm payrolls was elevated.
On the high end, a handful of economists estimated that the economy added back at least 3 million jobs during the month, or double the median estimate. Several, however, expected that non-farm payrolls declined by several hundred thousand. US employers added back more jobs than expected in each of the three latest jobs reports.
Still, economists convened on the notion that the pace of recovery in the labor market decelerated since June, due to both the sunsetting of enhanced federal unemployment benefits and the reimposition of stay-in-place measures in some states.
“The 1.763 million increase in non-farm payrolls in July confirms that the resurgence in new virus cases caused the economic recovery to slow, but also underlines that it has not yet gone into reverse,” said Andrew Hunter, senior economist for Capital Economics. “With new infections now trending clearly lower again and high-frequency activity indicators showing tentative signs of a renewed upturn, employment should continue to rebound over the coming months.”
Ahead of the July jobs report, other recent data also reflected a braking recovery in the labor market. The reference week for the Labor Department’s jobs report captured the period including the 12th of the month, and in mid-July, weekly unemployment insurance claims worsened for two consecutive weeks after months of improvement.
Plus, the closely watched ADP National Employment Report released Wednesday showed private payrolls rose by a meager 167,000 in July. Consensus economists had expected private employers added back 1.2 million payrolls, after an upwardly revised 4.3 million additions in June.

basic math suggests that if there are 53 different studies world wide saying it works, that it's pretty difficult to discount those studies because of a hand full of studies that appear to be specifically created with the "INTENT" to prove that they don't.
But there "could" be something where it simply doesn't work in politically charges portions of the world like the United States... while it works perfectly well in Switzerland, Turkey, India, Malaysia, etc... where it has proven to be very effective.

The July gains were driven by hiring in sectors that had been hard hit by the pandemic, such as leisure and hospitality, which increased by 592,000 jobs — about a third of the total monthly gain. Employment at restaurants, bars and other food and drink services rose by 502,000.
Amusements, gambling and recreation added another 100,000.
Employment at government agencies also rose in July, by about 300,000, including 215,000 working in education at the local level.
Still, employment in those sectors remains well below pre-pandemic levels, as the economy struggles to gain back the more than 20 million jobs lost during the pandemic.
Fewer than half of the jobs lost in April have been recovered in May, June, and July. More than 30 million people are currently receiving some form of unemployment insurance.
The figures are drawn from a weeklong survey that takes place the week of the 12th each month — the middle of July. Because of the lag, economists urged caution about interpreting them, noting troubling economic signs have emerged in more recent weeks.
“We’re going to see a slightly different picture when the impact of that is fully felt,” said Lisa Cook, an economist at Michigan State University. “It’s an encouraging as a standalone report but what is to come scares me. This is still a really weak market.”
