Sometimes entire streets or neighborhoods are cleared. Pro-Biden Facebook groups have devoted long threads to strategies for deterring sign snatchers — one suggestion involves clear hair gel and pesky glitter, another electrifying the metal frame with a car battery. While sign thefts are a problem every election year for candidates of both parties — and are an ongoing source of headaches for campaign staffers and party officials — some Democrats in Pennsylvania and several other states insist it’s worse for them this year and illustrates the emotional intensity of the coming election. Campaign staffers frequently roll their eyes at the utility of campaign signs, preferring to spend their time and money on higher-tech sales pitches. But as the Trump campaign proved in 2016, signs can create a momentum for a candidate all on their own, persuading people that siding with a candidate, even a controversial one, is safe. Now, with many people stuck at home amid a historic pandemic, yard signs have become a stand-in for other shows of support for a candidate, such as attending a rally or marching in a parade. When that symbol vanishes, it can feel like a violation. “The political landscape is so divisive at this point that one side literally cannot tolerate seeing the opinion of anyone else,” said Erin Shifflett, whose two Biden signs, illuminated by spotlights, were stolen from her front yard in southwestern Pennsylvania. “Not only can they not tolerate it, but they’re compelled to dismantle anything that they don’t agree with.”
Shifflett, a 46-year-old English instructor and writer, moved home to Somerset County just after the 2016 election from Dallas. Her community is filled with Trump signs and a massive Trump billboard — so she was excited when her Biden signs, put up in late July, got some car honks and thumbs up. Then one night, she and her husband heard the neighbor’s dog barking. Her husband went “tearing outside and was just within seconds of seeing them grab the signs, jump in the truck and then drive away,” she said. It’s the first time she has had a campaign sign stolen — and she has put up signs for Democrats in Alabama and Texas. She plans to replace the stolen two with six new ones. Her car is now plastered with pro-Biden magnets, as is her husband’s car.

Things were looking pretty good in Florida on April 13, when Gov. Ron DeSantis and state officials held a press briefing in Tallahassee. A reluctant DeSantis had issued a lockdown two weeks before, but coronavirus infections were low, and he was eager to open the state back up again. In his presentation, the governor went through a number of slides, making over and over again the argument that Florida was doing well.
As he usually did, DeSantis made sure to point out that his state was definitely doing better than New York, which had been dealt a crushing blow by the pandemic. Thousands had died there. Only hundreds had died in Florida.
Sitting at the podium several feet from DeSantis was Scott Rivkees, who is both the state’s surgeon general and its health commissioner. Near the end of the meeting, Rivkees spoke up to offer a note of caution, telling Floridians that until a vaccine can be made available, they would have to continue adhering to social distancing guidelines, which both President Trump and DeSantis had consistently downplayed.
“As long as we are going to have COVID in the environment — and it is a tough virus — we are going to have to practice these measures so that we are all protected,” Rivkees said. There was nothing remotely controversial in this assertion. Yet it would prove the surgeon general’s undoing.
The governor’s communications director, Helen Aguirre Ferré, approached Rivkees at the podium and whispered into his ear. After she left, he remained seated but seemed confused. Ferré came up to him again, and this time the confusion was dispelled. Rivkees rose and left the briefing room.

In my short time as Acting Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, I have witnessed firsthand how this delicate balance has been destroyed.
“We worked collaboratively with intelligence officials to create a process to regularly brief all members of Congress and to regularly inform, with as much detail as possible, the American people on foreign threats to the 2020 election.
“Consistent with our requests, Mr. Evanina, a career member of the intelligence community who has served under both Republican and Democratic presidents, released the first of a planned series of statements to the American public on threats to the 2020 Elections. His reward was to be smeared in vile and personal terms in a letter signed by Democratic leaders of Congress.
“Also consistent with our requests, career officials from various intelligence agencies briefed virtually every member of the House and then the Senate in a series of small group briefings. Yet, before the second day of House briefings had begun, the classified information they had shared was already in the media.
“And in response to widespread bipartisan encouragement, Mr. Evanina issued the most specific and public pre-election foreign threat notification in American history -- a public notice that divulged the names of various actors behind efforts to undermine the 2020 election. And the response from the usual Congressional suspects was to employ their usual tactic, to disingenuously imply that additional and relevant information was being withheld because it was damaging to the President.
“Divulging access to classified information in order to employ it as a political weapon is not only an abuse, it is a serious federal crime with potentially severe consequences on our national security. This situation we now face is due, in no small part, to the willingness of some to commit federal crimes for the purpose of advancing their electoral aims.
“Yet, this grotesque criminal misconduct does not release the intelligence community from fulfilling its legal requirements to respond to Congressional oversight committees and to keep members of Congress fully informed of relevant information on a timely basis. I have spoken to the Director Radcliffe who stated unequivocally that he will continue to fulfill these obligations. In particular, he made explicitly clear that the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence will continue receiving briefings on all oversight topics, including election matters.”
“Democrats and Republicans on our committee will continue to exercise vigorous and thorough oversight over our nation’s intelligence activities in full compliance with our obligations and duties under the law. And we will continue to expect timely and complete information from our intelligence agencies.”
