Trump signs executive order! More liberal heads explode!

The left is insane over Trump executive order!
Trump’s Executive Order would include these four components: (1) a payroll tax holiday until the end of the year, (2) an extension of enhanced unemployment benefits until the end of the year, (3) an extension of the eviction moratorium for federal subsidized housing, and (4) a suspension of student loan payments until further notice.
Questions surround the legality of accomplishing at least some of these things via executive order. Trump’s response to that might be, “so sue me.”
However, as a political matter, Trump’s move looks like a masterstroke. Since the days of FDR, the public has always seemed to approve of presidents who act to ameliorate suffering while Congress diddles. A flurry of activity, even of the futile or potentially counterproductive kind, makes a president look energetic and caring.

Let's start with the barrage of lies that have already started pouring in. In similar fashion to the infamous "drink bleach" fantasy, Democrats are already arguing in unison that the payroll tax holiday is actually a "permanent cut".  Just like the "drink bleach" fairy tale, there is literally nothing to the blatant lie that Trump is permanently cutting payroll taxes. But Democrats inherently understand that the facts don't matter. All that matters is what they say to the media and what their media lapdogs are willing to repeat. It makes you wonder if Democrats now believe that their followers are so stupid, that they will not fact check a word they say anymore.

Now granted, the executive order will get dragged into court the second court opens up on Monday morning, and by 8:01 EST there will likely be an injunction from some Obama judge to stop it. But I sort of have to agree that the move is politically smart for the President. Not only does it appear that he is attempting to help the general public, he is forcing liberal groups and potentially Democrats themselves to not only oppose helping Americans, but actually go to court to stop it.

The truth is that Democrats want three of the four items that the President is calling for. Moreover, the fourth item (the payroll tax holiday) is one that has been used in many situations in the past to mitigate rough economic times. It's a simple way to put money in the pocket of every American. Since the payroll taxes are capped at a rather small amount, it means that it is not a progressive tax cut that will help more with the rich than the poor.

It would be more than a fair trade off to get the rest of the liberal asks and everyone knows it. The only question is how well Democrats and their followers are able to sell the lie that it's somehow not fair.

Lastly... no, a five month holiday on payroll taxes will not bring down Social Security, which is in way deeper trouble than more revenue can fix. Social Security has a "spending problem" not a "revenue problem".

Keep in mind that this exact same payroll tax vacation was done during the Obama Administration:

Never fails that Lil Schitty just posts the data that supports his bullshit......sure seems to me the Obama tax vacation was something Busch left behind!!!!!! BWAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! Thanx again Lil Schitty for being nothing more than a partisan trump asshole!!!!!

Updated November 20, 2019
When people refer to President Obama's tax cuts, they generally refer to the $858 billion tax cut deal signed in 2010. It extended the Bush tax cuts through 2012 and unemployment benefits through 2011. It cut payroll taxes by 2%, adding $120 million to workers' spendable income. It extended a college tuition tax credit. It also included $55 billion in industry-specific tax cuts.

To pay for part of these costs, Obama’s deal revived the inheritance tax that had lapsed for a year. It applied a 35% tax rate to estates worth over $5 million for individuals or over $10 million for families.

Election Day is now just three months away, and the overall trajectory of the race hasn’t changed much recently: Joe Biden continues to hold a sizable lead over President Trump. Biden is now up by 8 percentage points in FiveThirtyEight’s national polling average, and he has an advantage of 5 points or more in several key battleground states like Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Faced with these numbers, though, a lot of people — Republicans, Democrats and people with no particular party affiliation — raise a reasonable question: “Wasn’t Hillary Clinton leading in the polls too?”

Well, yes. But not quite like this. We compared Biden’s standing to where Clinton was at this point in the polls four years ago.1 We specifically chose this point in the cycle in 2016 because it’s about where Clinton hit her peak — on Aug. 7, 2016, following the Democratic National Convention, Clinton had a 7.5-point lead over Trump in national polls.

Clinton never topped that lead. But as you can see in the chart below, even at her post-convention peak, Clinton’s lead over Trump still wasn’t as large as Biden’s is now.

Exactly correct from the Speaker Pelosi

Democratic leaders on Sunday roundly condemned President Trump’s set of executive orders bypassing Congress on coronavirus relief.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi began a “Fox News Sunday” interview by saying she agreed with Republican Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska that Trump's actions were “unconstitutional slop.”

Pelosi said the “kindest thing I could say” after looking at Trump’s executive orders was that he “doesn’t know what he's talking about.”

“Either the president doesn’t know what he’s talking about ... or something’s very wrong here," she reiterated during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.” In that interview, she called his actions “absurdly unconstitutional.”

The interviews came shortly before the U.S. reached 5 million confirmed coronavirus cases, according to tracking data from Johns Hopkins University. The university reported U.S. deaths at more than 162,000, and millions have been left unemployed with weak job prospects in the immediate future.

Forbes

President Trump said over the weekend, “If I’m victorious on November 3rd, I plan to forgive these [payroll taxes for Social Security and Medicare] and make permanent cuts to the payroll tax.”

Currently, employers and employees split the 12.4% payroll tax on the first $137,700 of 2020 earnings and also split the 2.9% Medicare tax on all earnings. The self-employed pay the entire tax.

Trump not only wants to suspend these taxes during the pandemic crisis, he says he wants to make permanent cuts to these taxes.

First, the only people who pay these taxes are people who still have their jobs and their earnings. With millions unemployed it can be argued that it would make more sense to increase deficit spending by providing help directly to those who don’t have any earnings––the unemployed.

But the bigger question revolves around the suspension of funding to Medicare and Social Security––particularly permanent cuts.

Both the Medicare and Social Security trust funds are running out of money––both face an inability to pay full benefits if their problems aren’t solved by either increasing funding or cutting benefits. That is projected by the Congressional Budget Office to happen for Medicare in 2025 and Social Security in 2031.

If the Republicans win the election, Social security and Medicare will disappear.

The American people will not let it happen

In February 2009, Congress approved Obama’s economic stimulus package. It restored confidence and ended the Great Recession in July 2009. It cut $288 billion in taxes. It reduced that year's income taxes for individuals by $400 each and $800 for families. Instead of stimulus checks, workers received a lower withholding in their paychecks. It wasn't publicized very well, so many people didn't even notice the increase.

ARRA also reduced income taxes by the amount equal to the sales tax on a new car purchase. It provided $17 billion in tax cuts for households who invested in renewable energy. It included $54 billion in small business tax cuts.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated ARRA would save between 900,000 and 2.3 million jobs. In addition to tax cuts, it spent $224 billion in extended unemployment benefits, education and health care. It also spent $275 billion for job creation using federal contracts, grants, and loans.

The ARRA also spent $83 billion in public construction and $117 billion to improve education. There was $18 billion in science research funding, $54 billion to help small businesses, and $22 billion to increase alternative energy production. Another $138 billion funded health care. That included $24 billion to subsidize the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act benefits for laid-off workers and $87 billion to help states with Medicaid.

Scott, the 2009 stimulus package saved the automobile industry and led to the longest economic recovery in history.

Yes, at times, the economy didn't grow quickly enough. but he turned the economy to President Trump, who passed a tax cut that greatly favored the richest people. The economy did get great results, until the pandemic outbreak began in January when he said that it will just dissapear!

His decision to block travel from China was not very effective, because thousands of people came from Europe and brought the infections to New York state.

He continued to deny that the COVID-19 infection was a Democratic hoax!

Time to Sound the Alarm
August 9, 2020 at 12:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

Dan Pfeiffer: “The torrential tempo of news in the Trump era makes it difficult to separate the serious from the silly. A few weeks ago, Trump proposed delaying the election — something he has no ability to do, but fits with a long running progressive fear about Trump canceling the election and ruling for his remaining days. This absurd proposition dominated the political conversation for days.

“Delaying the election cannot and will not happen. Delaying the mail IS happening and it can help Trump steal the election. In many states, ballots mailed before the election that arrive after it, do not count. If you believe — as Trump clearly does — that Democrats will rely on mail balloting more than Republicans, delaying the mail is a very simple way to steal an election.

“This is a five alarm fire and we need to respond like the fate our democracy is on the line.”

In regards to the Demonstrations. My niece wrote this today ..

I support peaceful protests. (Peaceful doesn't mean "happy". I do not deny nor object to the protesters being mad as hell.)

I have not and still do not support setting fires in buildings, no matter how small or little damage is done. Fires can too easily get out of control and hurt people, not just property. (Not dismissing the cost and problem with property damage. I'm explaining my main concern.)

I also do not support bombs of any size and thrown by or towards anyone. Bombs don't discriminate. Bombs kill. Full stop. (Allegedly, some asshats threw small bombs at protesters. Police are investigating, so I won't say anything beyond whether it was fireworks or actual bombs - they can injure or kill.)

So the protesters and counter protesters need to knock this crap off. Now.

“Here’s the problem: payroll taxes go exclusively to fund Medicare and Social Security, however much they dislike those payroll taxes, Republicans have always opposed replacing them with general tax revenues,” tweeted Patrick Chovanec, an adjunct professor of international and public affairs at Columbia University. He notes that even with Congress signing on to a payroll tax holiday, it would “create a hole” in funding Medicare and Social Security, which Republicans would normally be reluctant to fill. “Without Congress signing on, those taxes are just deferred a few months until a bigger bill comes due,” Chovanec concludes.

Shortly after the passage of the Recovery Act in 2009, Vice President Joseph Biden urged local politicians not to spend the money on "stupid things." They ignored his advice, and so did Mr. Biden. The federal government poured billions into the government and education sectors, where unemployment was low, but spent only about 10% on promised infrastructure, though the unemployment rate in construction was running in double digits. And some of the individual projects funded by the law were truly appalling. $783,000 was spent on a study of why young people consume malt liquor and marijuana. $92,000 went to the Army Corps of Engineers for costumes for mascots like Bobber the Water Safety Dog. $219,000 funded a study of college "hookups."

In aggregate, the spending helped drive federal outlays from less than $3 trillion in 2008 to $3.5 trillion in 2009, where federal spending has roughly remained ever since.

The legacy is a slow-growth economy: Growth over the last 18 quarters has averaged just 2.4% -- pretty shoddy compared to better than 4% growth during the Reagan recovery in the 1980s and almost 4% in the 1990s recovery.

Scott, the 2009 stimulus package saved the automobile industry and led to the longest economic recovery in history.

It really didn't significantly affect the automobile industry. GM still went into bankruptcy, closing such major divisions as Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Saturn. GM emerges as a shell of itself retaining only Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC trucks.

There a reason it was the longest economic recovery in history. The rate of recovery was so slow, it was barely a recovery at all.

Spot on analysis why trump sucks...

By
Ashley Parker
August 9, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. EDT
Add to list
Shortly after a deadly explosion in Beirut this week, President Trump offered a theory — backed by no apparent evidence — that the devastating incident was “a terrible attack,” claiming “some of our great generals” thought it was likely the result of “a bomb of some kind.”
Such a bold proclamation from a U.S. president would usually set off worldwide alarms. Yet aside from some initial concern among Lebanese officials, Trump’s assertions were largely met with a collective global shrug.
More than 3½ years into his presidency, Trump increasingly finds himself minimized and ignored — as many of his more outlandish or false statements are briefly considered and then, just as quickly, dismissed. The slide into partial irrelevance could make it even more difficult for Trump as he seeks reelection as the nation’s leader amid a pandemic and economic collapse.
AD
ADVERTISING

In battling the coronavirus crisis, which has left more than 158,000 Americans dead, many of the nation’s governors have disregarded the president’s nebulous recommendations, instead opting for what they believe is best for their residents. So have the nation’s schools, with many of the country’s largest districts preparing for distance learning when they reopen this fall, despite Trump’s repeated calls for kids to return to classrooms in person. And the president’s own top public health officials are routinely contradicting him in public — offering grim, fact-based assessments of the raging virus in contrast to his own frequently rosy proclamations.
Congressional Republicans, meanwhile, never seriously entertained Trump’s desire for a payroll tax cut in the latest coronavirus stimulus bill, and the president has been more of a spectator than a key player in negotiations. Even former vice president Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, often seems to ignore the president he is running against, focusing his messaging elsewhere.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The White House staff had to correct the President's statement yesterday afternoon in his golf club.

White House advisors on Sunday walked back President Trump’s statement that he would make “permanent cuts” to the payroll tax if reelected, insisting that the president would preserve the primary funding source for Social Security, an entitlement program with overwhelming bipartisan support.

He said before that he would get the Congress to cut the salary taxes and destroy Social security and Medicare.

Senator Sasse a Republican senator called it unconstitutional

Trump Begins Debate Prep
August 9, 2020 at 5:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

Jonathan Swan:
“In the room with Trump were his son-in-law Jared Kushner, campaign manager Bill Stepien, senior adviser Jason Miller, and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who role-played Hillary Clinton in Trump’s 2016 debate prep sessions.

” The team agreed to meet at least every 10 days or so between now and the first debate… They resolved to keep the group very small. They may bring in different people based on subject matter expertise, but the group would remain five to six people to limit the potential for leaks.

“The group did not specifically discuss whether Christie will play Biden in debate rehearsals. But Trump has made private comments indicating Christie is likely to role-play Biden as he did Clinton.”

The number of reported coronavirus cases in the United States surpassed 5 million on Sunday, double the number since the end of June, as the Midwest grappled with new spikes and states across the South and West fought to contain surges.

The 5 million mark comes just 17 days after the U.S. total exceeded 4 million, according to The Washington Post’s tracking. The previous million cases were also reported in about a two-week span.

Reported U.S. cases have doubled since late June, peaking on July 17 with a staggering 76,491 cases in a single day. The United States leads the world with a quarter of all global infections. Brazil and India follow with 3 million and 2.1 million reported infections, respectively.

REACTIONS TO Trump's coronavirus aid action

Some Republicans joined Democrats in criticizing President Trump Saturday night for taking executive action on coronavirus aid, with Democratic leaders demanding the GOP return to negotiations after stimulus package talks broke down a day earlier.

Why it matters: Trump could face legal challenges on his ability to act without congressional approval, where the constitutional power lies on federal spending. Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) was the most vocal Republican critic, saying in a statement: "The pen-and-phone theory of executive lawmaking is unconstitutional slop."

What else they're saying:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) issued a joint statement on Saturday evening accusing Trump of failing to comprehend "the seriousness or the urgency of the health and economic crises facing working families."

Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, accused Trump of putting Social Security at risk in a "reckless war" with what he called "a series of half-baked measures."

Biden said in an emailed statement that Trump's payroll tax plan — which the president said would help "greatly," with payroll taxes for Americans earning less than $100,000 a year — had "no protections or guarantees," unlike those in the Obama administration.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), a Trump ally, tweeted, "I appreciate the President taking this decisive action but would much prefer a congressional agreement. I believe President Trump would prefer the same."

Rep. Justin Amash (L-Mich.), a vocal Trump critic who left the Republican Party in 2019, tweeted, "Our Constitution doesn’t authorize the president to act as king whenever Congress doesn’t legislate."

Scott A**hole still wants the schools to reopen immediately.

DALLAS, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia high school plans to start the week with all classes shifting online after nine students and staff tested positive for the coronavirus when the school year opened last week with most students attending in-person.

North Paulding High School made headlines soon after students returned to school Aug. 3 when photos posted on social media showed hallways crowded with students, and many of them not wearing masks. The school's principal notified parents Saturday that six students and three staff members had tested positive for the virus, though it's unknown if any were infected at school.

Now students will take online classes Monday and Tuesday, Paulding County Schools Superintendent Brian Ott said in a letter to parents Sunday. He said those two days will be used to clean and disinfect the school, and parents will learn Tuesday evening if in-person classes can resume later in the week.

“Hopefully we can all agree that the health and safety of our students and staff takes precedence over any other considerations at this time,” Ott said in his letter, which was obtained by Atlanta-area news outlets.

Paulding County schools spokesman Jay Dillon did not immediately return phone and text messages Sunday evening from The Associated Press.

400 years ago white people enslaved black people. And sold them. And treated them as less than human. For 250 years. While white men built the country and created its laws and its systems of government. While 10, 15 generations of white families got to grow and flourish and make choices that could make their lives better.

And then 150 years ago white people "freed" black people from slavery. But then angry white people created laws that made it impossible for them to vote. Or to own land. Or to have the same rights as white people. And even erected monuments glorifying people who actively had fought to keep them enslaved. All while another 5, 10 generations of white families got to grow and accumulate wealth and gain land and get an education.

And then 60 years ago we made it "legal" for black people to vote, and to be "free" from discrimination. But angry white people still fought to keep schools segregated. And closed off neighborhoods to white people only. And made it harder for black people to get bank loans, or get quality education or health care, or to (gasp) marry a white person. All while another 2-3 generations of white families got to grow and pass their wealth down to their children and their children's children.

And then we entered an age where we had the technology to make PUBLIC the things that were already happening in private-- the beatings, the stop and frisk laws, the unequal distribution of justice, the police brutality (police began in America as slave patrols designed to catch runaway slaves). And only now, after 400+ years and 20+ generations of a white head start, are we STARTING to truly have a dialog about what it means to be black.

White privilege doesn't mean you haven't suffered or fought or worked hard. It doesn't mean white people are responsible for the sins of our ancestors. It doesn’t mean you can’t be proud of who you are.

It DOES mean that we need to acknowledge that the system our ancestors created is built FOR white people.

It DOES mean that Black people are treated at a disadvantage because of the color of our skin and it DOES mean that we owe it to our neighbors-- of all colors-- to acknowledge that and work to make our world more equitable.

I was just watching an interview with Steve Schmidt, who is a Republican strategist who does not support Trump and has not from the beginning.

He made the comment that as bad as he pictured things getting in this country under a Trump administration from day 1, he could not have imagined it being this bad.

That always surprises me when I hear that because anyone that knows me will tell you I have absolutely preached doom and gloom for this country under a Trump administration the moment I heard the Billy Bush tapes.

I know tons of good men but some of these same men did not understand the moment we heard Donald Trump openly, laughingly admit to sexually assaulting women on a regular basis, our country was doomed if we elected him.

We know from years of research, that rates of recidivism for sex crimes is extremely high. People who commit these crimes are unable to change. Research also shows that 40% of sex crime perpetrators have also committed other felonies, in addition to sex crimes. 25 to 40 % of sex offenders are mentally ill.

The fact that he was elected tells me this country, as a whole, including many white, conservative, Christian women still don’t see women’s rights as human rights.

I remember writing a long post about those tapes the morning after they were released, warning and begging people not to vote for this man. I knew nothing but trauma would come from a Trump presidency, and how women and men with wives and daughters and granddaughters can still support him just me baffles me.

I truly do not understand how the conscience of our nation is still so distorted. What will it take for us to open our eyes?

This is unsurprising, given that the President seems to welcome foreign election interference that benefits him. Trump not only failed to condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin's attacks on democracy -- he has helped them by doing things like denying Russian interference in the 2016 election, spreading disinformation and divisions, undermining our institutions and, a whole number of other things that seem to belong in Putin's playbook for how to degrade US democracy.

Trump is a creature of habit, and his history of accusing China of attacking our elections -- and not Russia -- means he may be willing to aid and abet at least one country's influence operations. Trump has also denied previous intelligence assessments indicating that Russia preferred him as a candidate in 2016 and reportedly grew angry earlier this year when a senior intelligence official told Congress that Russia still wanted him to remain in office.

If the past is prologue, Trump is likely to turn a blind eye to some interference, cherry-pick information and misrepresent warnings from our intelligence community as long as it benefits his campaign prospects. The very intelligence aimed at safeguarding US elections could become so politicized that it runs the risk of helping foreign influence operations.

He will never admit that the Russians want him to be reelected President, because he is a puppet of Vladimir Putin. If he wins, the Russians will return to the scope of the Soviet Union. And dominate eastern Europe again.

It’s a good thing that left wingers are typically deficient in the sense of shame (just as they tend to be deficient in the sense of humor). If they weren’t, they would be finding it hard to live with themselves just now.

When President Trump announced four executive orders at his hastily called presser at his golf course at Bedminster, N.J., on Friday, the press looked down at its collective knickers and found them in a twist.

The President had been negotiating for weeks with Congress to address the suffering and economic displacement caused by the coronavirus. (Actually, truth in advertising requires that I emend that. The suffering and economic displacement were caused by the drastic overreaction to the disease, which overreaction on the part of governmental agencies was itself sparked by the cynical politicization of the disease, its reformulation into an anti-Trump weapon.)

Since Congress declined to act, Trump stepped into the breach. He issued orders providing for a payroll tax “holiday” through the end of the year for those earning less than $100,000, extending the payment of a weekly supplement for unemployment benefits, prolonging a moratorium on repayment of government funded student loans, and continuing the suspension of eviction from government subsidized housing.

The Washington Post greeted this bold action with the headline: “Trump Attempts to Wrest Tax and Spending Powers Away from Congress.”

Hugh Hewitt got to the heart of the unintended comedy here when he noted that “When President Obama pioneered selective enforcement of law, media elites applauded. … The powers supporting the laws which President Obama suspended—the immigration and border laws—are as ‘fundamental, constitutionally mandated’ as the taxing and spending powers. It will be revealing to see which reporters/platforms attempt to distinguish between the powers. … If an editorial outlet condemns @realDonaldTrump action but was silent on the President Obama’s DACA and DAPA, they are engaging in rank hypocrisy.” Indeed.

Hewitt goes on to point out that the reverse is not true because President Trump is relying on the precedent Obama set, which has yet to be overturned. Consequently, he concludes, if you encounter outrage over President Trump’s “unilateral and unprecedented executive actions,” and so on, “understand the writer or speaker is either ignorant or deceitful” (or, I might add, both).

As a matter of principle, I am not at all sure that I think President Trump’s executive orders are good ideas—except, that is, for the payroll tax “holiday.” I’d make it permanent, but then I would also abolish Social Security, a “temporary” government program instituted in a time of crisis but which, like most government initiatives, took on a life of its own. What started as an emergency expedient came in time to be an expected “right.”

Senate chairman subpoenas FBI Director, ex-State official as Russia-Ukraine probe intensifies

A powerful Senate committee chairman has subpoenaed FBI Director Chris Wray and a former State Department official in an intensifying investigation into possible U.S. corruption in Russia and Ukraine and declared there is evidence Joe Biden's family engaged in a "glaring conflict of interest."

Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee Chairman Ron Johnson announced the actions Monday, strongly accusing Democrats of levying false allegations against him and other GOP investigators to distract from the evidence his committee has gathered about Joe and Hunter Biden's dealings in Ukraine.

"We didn't target Joe and Hunter Biden for investigation; their previous actions had put them in the middle of it," Johnson wrote in a letter released Monday that provided a detailed timeline of Joe Biden's Ukraine policy actions and his son's hiring with the Ukraine natural gas company Burisma Holdings.

"Many in the media, in an ongoing attempt to provide cover for former Vice President Biden, continue to repeat the mantra that there is 'no evidence of wrongdoing or illegal activity' related to Hunter Biden's position on Burisma's board," the senator wrote. "I could not disagree more."

Per @cdcgov:
Since Feb. 1, 45 American kids under 15 have died of #Covid.

13,088 have died of all other causes.

Since Feb. 1, 11,371 Americans under 55 have died of #Covid (most with serious comorbidities).

189,592 have died of all other causes.

What on earth are we doing?

We need to open schools and realize the media will politicize it to the hilt
