Or at least this is the conventional wisdom... I don't agree.
For a moment, we all might stop to consider whether or not conventional wisdom and insider political opinions actually represents the true feelings of the American electorate. Generally speaking the electorate pays very little attention to the political class and even less attention to the deep dive blogosphere style politics associated with those who are fixated on this stuff.
From what I have casually gathered from those who are Biden supporters, they truly believe that Biden is the superior candidate, the superior intellect, and they expect that Biden will wipe the floor with Trump in all of these debates. They believe this as much as they believed the same things to be true in 2016 with Hillary Clinton.
I have yet to find anyone who believes that Biden is incompetent, losing his marbles, or is otherwise incapable of standing toe to toe with the President for 90 minutes... but still plans to vote for Biden for President and leader of the free world. While they hear the President call him Sleepy Joe and they hear murmurs of intellectual decline, they simply see that as just another unfair and unwarranted personal attack from the President and conservatives (who they believe did the same thing to Clinton in 2016).
So unlike some of those who are responsible for the conventional wisdom, I do believe that a bulk of Joe Biden supports (or those leaning towards voting for Joe) do actually expect more out of him than not falling asleep or not soiling himself in the middle of the debate. They believe Joe is fully capable of debating for 90 minutes and that is what they expect to see.
What we saw in the Democratic Debates earlier this year is that while Joe Biden was certainly not the sharpest tool in the shed or a brilliant debater, he got away with being mostly competent in situations which demanded far less of him. I also recall that Biden had a tendency to "wear down" a little and become less sharp as the debates went on. This could play a factor in a one on one 90 minute debate.
Now the Biden team say they say he has been working several hours a day for weeks to prepare for this, while many from the Trump camp say that the President has almost flippantly disregarded debate prep (as he did in 2016). Traditionally incumbents struggle in the first debate for this very reason. Sitting Presidents likely believe they need less preparation and believe it or not being President of the United States is time consuming. Unlike Biden, Trump cannot repeatedly shut down his day at 10:00 AM to work on debate prep.
Bottom line: This could go either way here folks.
If I had to make a guess, I would say that Trump will be Trump will be Trump will be Trump and that Biden will appear "mostly" competent providing well rehearsed boilerplate bullet point answers to questions while possibly flailing a little with the follow up. But this will provide enough for the liberal media to declare Biden the winner.
But it's also very possible that Trump gets under Biden's skin and traps the former VP into playing his game (as he has done with most everyone else). Biden has shown a quick temper and that would undermine his strategy of coming across as the calm alternative. It also is possible that Biden will lose his train of thought enough that it will not appear "normal". This is what the Biden team is preying doesn't happen and is probably why Joe Biden has been preparing rather than campaigning for the past few weeks.
What I don't accept, however, is the conventional wisdom that Biden has such low expectations that he has very little to lose. I believe that it's way more important for Biden to come across as in command and Presidential than many of these people want to believe. A bad performance for Biden will be exactly what would push the same sort of competency and health theories that plagued Clinton down the stretch. I simply don't believe that enough people will be willing to vote for a man who is nearly 80 if that age shows itself.
There is no question that Biden is struggling with his cognitive abilities and health much more than Clinton ever was. If a 68 year old Clinton stumbling or needing help down a flight of stairs convinced people she had health issue, what happens if the 78 year old Biden forgetting his lines or requiring a teleprompter becomes a mainstream issue (rather than just conservative fodder)?

Biden won't get angry about the President and his lies. He will draw the contrast between chaos and stability leadership.
A lot of Americans are tired of the chaotic behavior of the President.

Ch, the majority of the American people already see Trump as a liar and a fraud.
They are expecting the debate to underline that.
I expect their expectations to be met.

You prove my point...
and if Biden loses his train of thought and wanders off into a word salad, then you will be surprised as all hell. Because you really believe in your heart that at 78 years young, that Biden is intellectually as sharp as a tack and will prove it to the world.
You also believe that his use of teleprompters and reluctance to take questions have nothing to do with an inability to either answer impromptu questions or do so without being told what to say.
Correct?
Trump is very predictable. Biden is going to be prepared to respond and contrast himself with the President.
I think that Biden should focus on contrasting himself with the President.
The news coverage said that the President is not preparing for the debate. He likes to follow his impulsive behavior in public. His base will never break away from the President.
But Biden has the opportunity to draw the contrast.
Joe Biden will do very well.
I have been saying it for weeks.
He has 8 years as VP and endless years in Government.
Joe will be aggressive
You made my point. You keep saying that he needs a teleprompter but I have watched him speaking clearly, without a teleprompter. You keep looking only at the Twitter feeds of the President to get your talking points.
Because of the pandemic, Biden is not conducting superseding campaign events. You keep saying that is proof of mental illness, but it is just another example of propaganda.
If Biden really was mentally disabled, the politicians would tell him to withdraw from the campaign and leave it to Kamala Harris

Victory for Republicans as Wisconsin judge halts six-day extension for counting absentee ballots after the election
A federal appeals court on Sunday temporarily halted a six-day extension for counting absentee ballots in Wisconsin's presidential election
The move is a momentary victory for Republicans and President Donald Trump in the key presidential battleground state
U.S. District Judge William Conley ruled September 21st ballots that arrive up to six days after Election Day will count as long as they're postmarked Nov 3rd
Sunday's action puts Conley's order on hold until the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals or U.S. Supreme Court issues any further action
Under current law, the deadline for returning an absentee ballot to have it counted is 8pm on Election Day
Democrats sued to extend the deadline in the key swing state after the April's primary saw long lines and thousands of ballots mailed days after the election

One thing is very true Roger... and that is that you and I have been seeing much different images of Joe Biden. Just a couple of weeks ago his own campaign handler refused to repute in an FOX News interview that Biden is using a teleprompter for most everything he does.
His handler suggested that the question was irrelevant and just right wing attack (just as you are suggesting). But unlike you (who claims that Dementia Joe is engaging in campaign stops and live interviews without the use of a teleprompter) - his handler refused to suggest he wasn't using a teleprompter or repute the idea that he has been dependent on one.
I have not seen any recent footage of Biden that suggests he is making any campaign speeches without a teleprompter (which is not unusual) or offering any interviews that do not involve pre-prepared questions and answers (which is very unusual). I have, however, seen many examples of Biden not only using a teleprompter to answer questions, but screwing it up as he did when he started answering a reporter question with the term "roll it up" - obviously referring to the teleprompter.
I have also seen at least two examples where he appears to be looking at a teleprompter and then gets completely lost when it appears it stops working.
Now that doesn't prove that Biden in incompetent and he will likely be competent in tonight's debate. He hasn't lost "that much" since he debated this summer against the other Democrats. But those were much simpler questions and Biden did struggle to defend himself against a variety of attacks when things got off script.
Do you recall how badly Kamala Harris rang Biden's bell in that first (or was it second) debate. He was left dumbfounded and many people counted him out after that.
But alas... he stopped being the subject of attack after that, and never ended up back in the hot seat based on how things went with the nomination. He was counted out, till he started winning states and has not been back on a debate stage as the frontrunner, much less the nominee.
Will he respond better to Trump's attacks than he did with Kamala Harris?
You better believe he performs way, way, way better...

One of the fastest ways to be denied a security clearance, current and former intelligence officials will tell you, is to carry a load of debt. And then there’s President Donald Trump.
New revelations in a New York Times report show Trump allegedly has $421 million of debt coming due over the next four years. An audit fight with the IRS could cost him another $100 million. At the same time, he reportedly paid taxes to foreign nations far larger than the $750 he paid in the United States the year he won the presidency and his first year in office.
For a sitting president, with the power to impose fear or favor across the country and around the world, not to mention access to the nation’s most closely held secrets, such financial exposure is more than embarrassing, former intelligence officials and ethics lawyers say: it makes Trump a national security threat.
If he wasn't the President, he would not be giving a National security clearance.
https://time.com/5894199/trump-debt-national-security-threat/
I spent over 300 mornings in the Oval Office briefing the president and his senior staff. I had the privilege to manage, edit and deliver the president’s Daily Brief a summary of the most timely and critical intelligence threats to the U.S. from 2010 to 2014.
As a Deputy on the National Security Council, I spent over 1,000 hours in the White House Situation Room providing the intelligence assessments which informed critical U.S. national security policy decisions — including the raid that rendered justice for the victims of 9/11.
Since I have been eligible to vote, I have never registered with a political party. I remain an independent with a history of voting for candidates I believe in — I focused on their policy and not their party. Before this election, I have never spoken out for or against a candidate for any office.
But I can be silent no longer.
In the summer of 1976, I was 14 years old and new to Colorado, my father took command of the Western Region’s National Guard. I enrolled in the brand-new Smoky Hill High School on what was then the far eastern boundary of Aurora. As a military brat, I was accustomed to moving around and not putting down roots — but as readers will know well, Colorado has a way of pulling on your heart and it became home. It remains so as my family spends as much time as possible in our Dillon residence.
Upon graduating from Cornell University, I joined the intelligence community as an analyst during President Ronald Reagan’s increasing investments in defense — a buildup that culminated in the collapse of the Soviet Union by the end of the decade. In my nearly four decades of service, I had the privilege of serving under six presidents — four Republican and two Democrat. The constant across all of those administrations was the oath I took to “protect and defend” the Constitution against “all enemies — foreign and domestic.”
I know what it takes to succeed at the highest levels of our government — intellectual curiosity, the strength of moral purpose and a commitment to selfless service. Broadly speaking, I can personally attest that Americans were very well served by those they elected to fill critical national security positions.
There is one important exception to that statement — our current president.
I have briefed him up close — and I have seen and felt the effect of his faults on our nation’s security. Out of respect for the confidential nature of Oval Office conversations, I will not provide details. Suffice to say that the person you see presiding over COVID-19 press conferences is the same one in the privacy of his office. He has little patience for facts or data that do not comport with his personal world view. Thus, the conversations are erratic and less than fully thoughtful.
While it is natural for there to be tension between the intelligence community and senior policymakers, President Donald Trump’s decision to rely upon the word of dictators like Vladimir Putin is an unprecedented betrayal of his oath to the Constitution. Our current president bases his decisions on his instincts, and his instincts are based upon a personal value proposition — what’s in it for me?
As a Commander in Chief, President Trump comes up tragically short. He fails to protect our soldiers when bounties are placed on their heads by his friend Vladimir. And not only does he not respect their service, but President Trump also belittles combat heroes who were taken as prisoners of war.
As a nation, we were fortunate that a true crisis did not occur during his first three years in office.
Then 2020 happened. This has been an unprecedented year for which many of us were not prepared. In moments of crisis, the American people demand — and deserve — a leader who will put the country first. Full stop. Because the reality and the science of COVID-19 conflicted with his personal views, President Trump knowingly downplayed the pandemic.
If your company has billions in assets, that's not a lot of debt. You keep showing us your economic ignorance.
Robert Cardillo has held numerous leadership positions in his distinguished 35 years of service in the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC). Most recently, he served as the sixth director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) from October 2014 until February 2019, where he led the Agency’s efforts to modernize and grow its global geospatial intelligence mission. Previously, from 2010 to 2014, Mr. Cardillo served as the first deputy director for intelligence integration at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), where he operationalized and implemented the DNI’s vision to fully integrate the IC. In this position, Mr. Cardillo managed, edited, and delivered over 1,400 President’s Daily Briefs.
In 2010, Mr. Cardillo served as the deputy director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), where he managed a 20,000-person global enterprise to deliver intelligence advantages to the U.S. military. In addition, from 2006 to 2010, he served as the deputy director for analysis at DIA. In the summer of 2009, Mr. Cardillo served as the acting director for intelligence (J2), a first for a civilian, in support of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Before joining DIA, Mr. Cardillo led analysis and production as well as source operations and management at the NGA from 2002-2006. Mr. Cardillo began his career with DIA in 1983 as an imagery analyst. Mr. Cardillo earned a B.A. in government from Cornell University and an M.A. in national security studies from Georgetown University. What Biden Can Expect Tonight
Philippe Reines:
“Donald Trump is a very bad debater.
Donald Trump is very difficult to debate.
“These two seemingly contradictory statements are equally true. He’s a dangerous opponent. In 2016, it was because he had nothing to lose. Now, it’s because he has everything to lose."
How Trump’s Tax Returns Could Affect The Election
Geoffrey Skelley:
“All in all, past surveys and research suggest that The Times’s latest story — which is more significant in scope and covers a more recent part of Trump’s business dealings than past revelations — could put a dent in how the public views Trump’s business acumen. Whether that actually happens may come down to how much sustained media attention the story receives. For example, will the first presidential debate, on Tuesday night, dwell on Trump’s tax returns?
“If the tax returns do stay in the spotlight, there is reason to think they could hurt Trump electorally. For one, Trump is an underdog for reelection at the moment and the clock is ticking — any day during which he’s not making up ground is a problem. But the malleability of voters’ views of Trump’s business record is also notable because we have reason to think Trump’s business credentials played at least some role in his electoral success in 2016, and may continue to undergird [or erode] some of his support today."
Taegan Goddard:
"The Trump Tax Story Could Finally Move the Polls."
WANT A LAUGH?
Trump Wants to Inspect Biden’s Ears
President Trump’s campaign wants Joe Biden’s campaign to allow a third party to inspect the ears of each debater for electronic devices or transmitters, Fox News reports.
DOES THIS SOUND LIKE DESPERATION?
Trump’s Pennsylvania Problem
Aaron Blake notes that the Democratic candidate has carried the Philadelphia suburbs by between 7 and 17 points in every presidential race since 2004.
Trump’s deficit there in the new New York Times-Siena poll is 24 points and in the new Washington Post-ABC News poll is 38 points.
Some Brooklyn Absentee Voters Getting Wrong Envelopes
“With five weeks left until the Nov. 3 election, many voters are eager to cast their ballots absentee and early. A growing number of registered voters in Brooklyn, however, received ballots on Monday with an incorrect return address,” NBC New York reports.
Postal Workers Quietly Resisted Changes
[BECAUSE THEY WANTED A FAIR ELECTION?]
The Washington Post:
“This summer, as controversial new procedures at the U.S. Postal Service snarled the nation’s mail delivery and stirred fears of how the agency would handle the election, rank-and-file workers quietly began to resists.
“Mechanics in New York drew out the dismantling and removal of mail-sorting machines until their supervisor gave up on the order. In Michigan, a group of letter carriers did an end run around a supervisor’s directive to leave election mail behind, starting their routes late to sift through it. In Ohio, postal clerks culled prescriptions and benefit checks from bins of stalled mail to make sure they were delivered, while some carriers ran late items out on their own time. In Pennsylvania, some postal workers looked for any excuse — a missed turn, heavy traffic, a rowdy dog — to buy enough time to finish their daily rounds.”
Ohio Could Keep Trump from Contesting the Election
Yahoo News:
“To nip any disaster scenario in the bud, they say, Biden ... needs to flip one or more ‘nail-in-the-coffin states’ — that is, the ones that on election night itself could quickly and decisively prove that Trump has no remaining path to victory.
“Ohio, the site of this year’s first presidential debate, could be Biden’s best option.”

The Hate at the Heart of Conspiracy Theory
David French:
“Something bothers me about the most common explanations for why conspiracy theories are spreading on the American right. When trying to account for the rise of the Q-Anon movement, for example, pundits and social scientists tend to use terms like ‘distrust.’ But to understand how so many Americans can believe that ‘they’ have dark and evil designs, we need to resort to a more primal emotion: hate.
“Here’s what I mean. I don’t trust my car dealer.
When it comes to matters like car pricing, car repairs, and car warranties, I adopt Ronald Reagan’s mantra from the days of the Cold War: ‘Trust, but verify.'
“But though I don’t trust my car dealer, I don’t dislike anyone at the dealership. So if you told me that the guy who sold me my 2018 Honda Accord was part of a global pedophile ring that cannibalizes slaughtered children—central elements of the Q-Anon conspiracy theory—my first response would be total confusion.
"Distrust alone wouldn’t come close to preparing me to hear those words. I’d have to hate him before I believed something so evil.”

The “consultants” are not identified in the tax records. But evidence of this arrangement was gleaned by comparing the confidential tax records to the financial disclosures Ivanka Trump filed when she joined the White House staff in 2017. Ms. Trump reported receiving payments from a consulting company she co-owned, totaling $747,622, that exactly matched consulting fees claimed as tax deductions by the Trump Organization for hotel projects in Vancouver and Hawaii.
Employers can deduct consulting fees as a business expense and also avoid the withholding taxes that apply to wages. To claim the deduction, the consulting arrangement must be an “ordinary and necessary” part of running the business, with fees that are reasonable and market-based, according to the I.R.S. The recipient of the fees is still required to pay income tax.
Ivanka Trump is liable to pay taxes on the consultant fees.
Roger knows nothing about capital markeys or corporate accounting. South Florida property values dropped. So Trump used the opportunity to do major renovation expensing. All that added up to a carry forward loss to be spied to future years gains.

Alan Futerfas is an American criminal defense attorney. He has represented several notable clients, including organized crime figures and Donald Trump Jr., son of Donald Trump.
A mob boss lawyer.
Two of those deductions — at Seven Springs and at the Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles — are the focus of an investigation by the New York attorney general, who is examining whether the appraisals on the land, and therefore the tax deductions, were inflated.
Another common deductible expense for all businesses is legal fees. The I.R.S. requires that these fees be “directly related to operating your business,” and businesses cannot deduct “legal fees paid to defend charges that arise from participation in a political campaign.”
Yet the tax records show that the Trump Corporation wrote off as business expenses fees paid to a criminal defense lawyer, Alan S. Futerfas, who was hired to represent Donald Trump Jr. during the Russia inquiry. Investigators were examining Donald Jr.’s role in the 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russians who had promised damaging information on Mrs. Clinton. When he testified before Congress in 2017, Mr. Futerfas was by his side.
Mr. Futerfas was also hired to defend the president’s embattled charitable foundation, which would be shut down in 2018 after New York regulators said it had engaged in “a shocking pattern of illegality.”
The Trump Corporation paid Mr. Futerfas at least $1.9 million in 2017 and 2018, tax records show. Also written off was at least $259,684 paid to Williams & Jensen, another law firm brought in during the same period to represent Donald Trump Jr.
The fact that the business expenses can be deducted by law is a political issue.
Super rich people can purchase private aircraft and fly everywhere on our dollar.

Joseph R. Biden Jr. released his 2019 tax returns on Tuesday, which show that he and his wife, Jill, had an adjusted gross income of $985,000 last year and paid federal income taxes of $288,000.
Mr. Biden released his latest tax returns hours before the first general election debate, and two days after The New York Times reported that President Trump paid only $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and in 2017.
That was a tiny fraction of what the Bidens paid those years, according to tax returns they had previously made public. They paid $91,000 in federal income taxes in 2016, when they had an adjusted gross income of $396,000, and they paid $3.7 million in 2017, when their adjusted gross income was $11 million.
The following year, in 2018, they paid $1.5 million in federal income taxes and had an adjusted gross income of $4.6 million.
Mr. Biden’s release of his most recent tax return seemed timed to place even more focus on Mr. Trump’s taxes and keep him on the defensive about them going into the debate. Mr. Biden has now released returns covering the past 22 years. His running mate, Senator Kamala Harris of California, also released her 2019 tax returns on Tuesday, which come in addition to 15 years of returns she released last year.
“This is a historic level of transparency meant to give the American people faith, once again, that their leaders will look out for them and not their own bottom line,” Kate Bedingfield, a deputy campaign manager for Mr. Biden, said on a call with reporters.
Mr. Trump did not release his tax returns when he ran for president as the Republican nominee in 2016, breaking with modern tradition, and has refused to do so since then.
Mr. Biden had previously criticized Mr. Trump for not releasing his tax returns. And this week, the Biden campaign quickly sought to capitalize on the revelations about Mr. Trump’s taxes, releasing a video showing the federal income taxes paid by workers like teachers and firefighters and launching a “Trump tax calculator” where people can determine how much more they paid in federal income taxes than the president.

He took money from authoritarian-leaning leaders.
Biden certainly did. So did his son.

Yeah, that's called income tax evasion.

"Jill, had an adjusted gross income of $985,000 last year and paid federal income taxes of $288,000."
"Adjusted " means they took legal deductions to REDUCE their tax liability.

It's the first to be named for an enlisted sailor and the first to be named after an African American."
Why didn't Biden/Obama get this done in their 8 lost years.
If you paid a penny in federal income taxes, you paid more than Donald Trump did in 10 out of the last 15 years. We can no longer tolerate a system that allows the very rich to pay nothing in taxes while millions of Americans lose their health insurance and children go hungry. Now more than ever, we need to create a government and tax code that works for all of us, not just Trump and his billionaire friends.
