Latest media lie?

The Contagion Externality of a Superspreading Event: The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and COVID-19

Finally, difference-in-differences (dose response) estimates show that following the Sturgis event, counties that contributed the highest inflows of rally attendees experienced a 7.0 to 12.5 percent increase in COVID-19 cases relative to counties that did not contribute inflows. Descriptive evidence suggests these effects may be muted in states with stricter mitigation policies (i.e., restrictions on bar/restaurant openings, mask-wearing mandates). We conclude that the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally generated public health costs of approximately $12.2 billion.

So basically a "German" study of the Sturgis Bike Rally has determined that it caused over 250,000 infections. Not based on any actual tangible reflection of how many participants have actually tested positive, but based on some statistical formula that pretty much does nothing to eliminate other variables that are in play.

But in reality, the rally hasn't actually produced much for new cases. Out of the three hundred thousand plus rally goers, there has been less than 300 reported cases.

According to South Dakota health officials, 124 new cases in the state—including one fatal case—were directly linked to the rally. Overall, COVID-19 cases linked to the Sturgis rally were reported in 11 states as of September 2, to a tune of at least 260 new cases, according to The Washington Post.

Obviously, if this really was a situation where each attendee was responsible for at least one new case, then you would see the brunt of the new cases taking place right in South Dakota, since all of the local workers, and many of the participants and on-lookers will be from South Dakota. The fact that South Dakota has 124 new cases attributed to the rally, a fraction of new cases overall to the amount of attendees, no increase in hospitalizations or deaths, rather than thousands that this German study would have suggested... sort of debunks the theory that Sturgis was a super spreader.

Unless of course you can prove that people who attended the rally from out of state are somehow more apt to be spreading it than South Dakota locals?  Perhaps this is not truly a unique virus, and really isn't able to tell the difference between a local and a traveler, anymore than it can tell the difference between a bike rally and a black lives matter riot.

Either way, the facts will not prevent the media from reporting that Sturgis (unlike any number of rallies, protests, or riots attended by liberals) was a "superspreader" of Covid.

Can't you just smell the desperation?

I posted what I found. It has not been on my mind since then.

But this thread made me go and look again.

Sure enough, as a well written article concludes, erroneous calculations led to gross exaggerations, and they should be avoided.

Still, that article concludes:

"None of this means that the rally was probably harmless. Common sense would tell us that such a large event with close contact was risky and did increase transmission. The rise in Meade County was real and noticeable, albeit on the scale of 29 cases. Given the huge inflow to this specific location along with increased testing for the event, a bump was not surprising. Contact tracing reports have identified cases and deaths linked to the event, but in the range of hundreds."

In the range of hundreds. "Mere" hundreds?

Would it not have been better for the sake of those hundreds not to have had the event, or to have encouraged more distancing and wearing masks during it?

It's just politics

Pennington and Clay County. Those counties made up 40.7% of new cases in South Dakota over that time, according to the report.

Your bridge to understanding.

The report goes on to say that South Dakota had 235 new cases per 100,000 population last week, compared to a national average of 88 per 100,000.

Thursday's cases: Coronavirus claims another four South Dakotans; 263 new cases announced

It also included some recommendations, like promoting of face coverings and mask use outside of the home and increasing the amount of testing being done.

"Continued increasing case counts and remarkably high test positivity in the context of insufficient testing levels are deeply concerning; aggressively promote social distancing and use of face coverings, particularly in indoor settings, statewide," the report reads.

Governor's office: Noem doesn't find COVID-19 situation 'deeply concerning'
The South Dakota Department of Health since the beginning of the health pandemic has been running an advertising campaign encouraging people to stay home and socially distance. But Noem has resisted calls for a mask mandate in South Dakota.

Noem's office sent out a statement last month saying the governor doesn't oppose the use of masks but she will not take action to force them to be worn in public settings.

Maggie Seidel, a senior advisor in Noem's office, said the governor doesn't find the COVID-19 situation in South Dakota "deeply concerning" and that it doesn't adequately account for all the testing being done across the state including sentinel testing in the schools and the mass-testing event in Meade County following the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

"We thought that we were going to have 10,000 people in the hospital and now this is deeply concerning?" she said. "Now we're at about 2,400 active cases."

Noem has consistently focused on the number of people with COVID-19 requiring hospitalization as a key metric of assessment. As of Thursday, 83 hospital beds in the state were being used by coronavirus patients.

Seidel said the governor isn't dismissive of White House Coronavirus Task Force reports sent to her office on a weekly basis. Rather, she uses them along with other recommendations to make the best policy decisions she sees fit, Seidel said.

"South Dakota is going to take all the information we can get, like the governor has for 7 or 8 months now," she said

Governor Noem is a Trumpist!

U-Haul Introduces Armored War Rigs For Californians Trying To Flee State's Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland

CALIFORNIA—To help meet the demand of millions of people desperately trying to escape the dark, ravaged wasteland of California, U-Haul is introducing a new product in its moving van line-up: the War Rig. These weaponized, armored moving vehicles will ensure you and your belongings stay safe during the long and perilous journey out of the state.

"We knew it was time to introduce some more serious vehicles to our fleet," said local U-Haul franchise owner Glax Destroyer, who manages 12 locations in Southern California. "We brought in the War Rig to supplement our completely depleted fleet of moving vans. With everyone leaving in droves, we don't have much left. We're pretty much salvaging old trucks from the junkyard and then adding armor plating and mounted weapons."

Sources confirm that each War Rig will comfortably seat a traditionally-sized California family of one person. They boast a fuel economy of 6 miles per gallon of guzzoline, which the U-Haul location will provide.

"I live! I die! I live again!" cried one patriarch as he led his family through the desert and toward Arizona in one of the new U-Haul War Rigs. "Witness me!"

Mr. Destroyer encourages customers to come early to secure their rigs before his power goes out and everything bursts into flames.

The company will either add fact-check labels to or hide altogether tweets that contain “false or misleading information that causes confusion” about election rules, or posts with “unverified information about election rigging.”

from Wiki on Republican governor Noem:

Coronavirus pandemic
During the coronavirus pandemic, Noem adopted a hands-off approach. As of April 14, 2020, Noem was one of seven governors who had not issued statewide stay-at-home orders in response to the COVID-19 pandemic; instead, she has emphasized her state's role in evaluating hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug, as a purported treatment for COVID-19. It was heavily promoted by President Trump, but was found to be ineffective and had dangerous side effects. South Dakota had one of the nation's largest coronavirus hotspots, with 800 workers and their family members testing positive for it at the Smithfield Foods production plant in Sioux Falls. Noem pointed out that this production facility was in full operation as an essential food manufacturing facility. On April 6, she issued an executive order that said people "shall" follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; she also ordered everyone over age 65 in two counties to stay home for three weeks.

Noem did not mandate social distancing or the wearing of face masks at a July 3 event at Mount Rushmore that featured President Trump. Health experts warned that large gatherings without social distancing or mask-wearing posed a risk to public health. Noem also controversially opted out of the enhanced unemployment benefits from the federal government 16 weeks after Trump's executive order citing a low state unemployment rate.

In September 2020, while coronavirus cases were surging in South Dakota (South Dakota had the second highest rate of new cases per capita in the country), Noem announced that she would use $5 million in coronavirus relief funds to fund a tourism ad campaign to draw visitors to the state.

Misleading Senate Ad Uses Out-of-Context Quotes
September 10, 2020 at 1:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

“Party operatives playing fast and loose with the facts is commonplace in campaign ads, but a recent TV spot in the Kansas Senate race is stretching the norms,” Inside Elections reports.

“A recent ad from Rep. Roger Marshall (R) is intended to paint Marshall’s opponent, state Sen. Barbara Bollier (D), as a typical left-wing politician… But the advertisement itself is highly misleading, taking Bollier’s own words out of context and making it seem as if she’s commenting on hot-button issues when in reality she is discussing unrelated topics.”

32 states had more deaths yesterday alone than we have had in the first nine days of the month.

I wonder where you people live?

Hopefully not some place like California where almost twice as many people per capita have died, or someplace like Illinois where over three times as many people have died per capita.

And have you seen our unemployment and economic numbers?

Said Trump:
“I saved his ass. I was able to get Congress to leave him alone. I was able to get them to stop.”

The president also told Woodward he doesn’t believe Mohammed bin Salman ordered Khashoggi’s murder, despite the fact that the US and other foreign intelligence services concluded he personally ordered the attack.
