This is being argued to be a "crime"

Barb Byrum, the Democratic clerk of Ingham County, filed a complaint with police over the display, saying it could mislead people who aren’t familiar with the voting system. “It is a felony to take illegal possession of an absentee ballot,” Byrum said Friday.

So exactly how stupid would someone have to be to seriously believe that this toilet was the proper place to put your mail in ballots? More to the point, would we actually want anyone this stupid to actually have a say in the direction of this country? I know the idea of a having to pass a test to be able to vote has been argued to be unconstitutional, but if you were to fail "this" particular test... god help you.

So why would a "Democratic clerk" be the one to file a complaint, rather than a "Republican clerk". I promise you that it's because Democrats probably believe that their own voters are just this stupid, whereas Republicans understand that their supporters would never fall for this in a million years.

Barack Obama is, of course, free to compare Donald Trump to Bull Connor or George Wallace for sending federal police to protect a courthouse in Portland — even if the violence in that city is largely perpetrated by white Marxist Antifa types and has nothing to do with equality.

But since Obama brought it up, it’s worth noting that the only person in modern American politics to have repeatedly praised Wallace and other segregationists is Joe Biden. It was Biden who bragged that in 1973 Wallace considered him “one of the outstanding young politicians of America.” It was Biden who wrote in 1975 that the “Democratic Party could stand a liberal George Wallace.” It was Biden who in 1981 told a black witness in the Senate that “sometimes even George Wallace is right.” It was Biden who, while campaigning for the presidency in Alabama in 1987, claimed that he’d been the recipient of an award from Wallace in 1973 (it probably wasn’t true; but what a thing to brag about!), and then boasted that Delaware was “on the South’s side in the Civil War.”

The reality is that right-wing extremism mutates to fit the specificities of time and place. The United States in 2020 is not the same as Germany in 1933. Trump is dangerous, racist, and unquestionably anti-democratic. His supporters draw from a legacy of brutal white supremacy that stretches back to the post-Reconstruction terror waged for close to a century on African-Americans in the Southern states. Trump himself traffics in unsubtle racism and glorifies and encourages violence. Still, he is not Hitler, and to draw parallels between the two men is not only to cheapen the memory of the victims of Nazism, but to critically misunderstand the threat Trump poses to the US and the world.

“Although DeJoy’s changes have been paused until after the election, the new data shows that first class mail continued to be delivered late across the country after his reversal. In the Baltimore postal district, for example, the on-time delivery rate remained at less than 60% at the end of August.”

Breaking News from the New York times

The Manhattan district attorney’s office, which has been locked in a yearlong legal battle with President Trump over obtaining his tax returns, suggested for the first time on Monday that it had grounds to investigate him and his businesses for tax fraud.

The assertion by the office of the district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., offered rare insight into the office’s investigation into the president and his business dealings, which began more than two years ago.

However, prosecutors listed news reports and public testimony that alleged misconduct by Mr. Trump and his businesses. The reports, prosecutors wrote, would justify a grand jury inquiry into a range of possible crimes, including tax and insurance fraud and falsification of business records. It was the first time the office had included tax fraud among the possible areas of investigation.

“Even if the grand jury were testing the truth of public allegations alone, such reports, taken together, fully justify the scope of the grand jury subpoena at issue in this case,” prosecutors wrote.

Jay Sekulow, a lawyer for Mr. Trump, declined to comment on the district attorney’s filing.

The president has said he expects the dispute over the subpoena will end up in the Supreme Court. “This is a continuation of the witch hunt, the greatest witch hunt in history,” Mr. Trump said last month.

Mr. Vance’s office has been investigating hush-money payments that were made before the 2016 election to two women who claimed they had affairs with Mr. Trump.

More recently, prosecutors suggested in court papers that their inquiry was broader, including a focus on possible financial crimes and insurance fraud. The prosecutors said they viewed Mr. Trump’s records as central to their investigation.

After the subpoena was issued, Mr. Trump sued in federal court to block it, arguing that as a sitting president, he had blanket immunity from any criminal investigation. The judge, Victor Marrero of Federal District Court in Manhattan, roundly dismissed the claim, which had not been tested in the courts before, and the president appealed.

The dispute ultimately reached the Supreme Court, which in July handed down a landmark decision ruling against Mr. Trump.

As death toll climbs, Biden warns against becoming 'numb' to COVID-19
Yahoo
During a speech Monday in Wisconsin, Democratic nominee Joe Biden implored Americans to resist the urge to become numb to COVID-19’s escalating death toll, and once again blamed President Trump’s “lies and incompetence” for the devastation caused by the disease.

“What worries me now is we’ve been living with this pandemic for so long, we’re at risk of becoming numb to the toll it’s taken on us and our country,” said Biden in Manitowoc. “You can’t lose the ability to feel the sorrow and the loss and the anger for so many lives lost. You can’t let the numbers become just statistics, background noise, just a blur.”

The coronavirus has now killed almost 200,000 Americans, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In late March, Trump said that if deaths from the virus stayed under 200,000, his administration would have done “a very good job” at curtailing its spread.

“Due to Donald Trump’s lies and incompetence over the last six months we have seen one of the greatest losses in American history,” Biden said. He also said Trump “panicked” and “froze” as the pandemic spiraled out of control, and that “the virus was just too big for him.”

Biden’s Monday remarks are the latest addition to his string of speeches that criticize the Trump administration’s pandemic response. The former vice president has sharpened his attacks in recent weeks, becoming visibly angered by Trump’s alleged disparagement of fallen U.S. soldiers and the president’s interviews with veteran journalist Bob Woodward, in which he admitted to downplaying the severity of COVID-19.

“He loves his rallies. The next time he holds one look closely. Trump keeps his distance from anyone at the rally. The folks who come are packed in tight as they can be risking disease mostly without masks, but not Trump. He safely keeps his distance,” Biden said.

Why would any Republican under a republican president want to wait to nominate a Supreme Court Justice?

BINGO

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

In keeping with his other recent speeches, Biden cast the upcoming election as a fight between Scranton, his middle-class Pennsylvania hometown, and Park Avenue, an upper-class stretch of Manhattan. The phrasing is part of Biden’s attempt to reframe the election along populist lines, with Democrats fighting for everyday people against wealthy Republican interests.

The Biden campaign hopes the message will prove attractive to Republican-leaning suburban and rural voters who may have soured on Trump.

“I want to spend just a few moments talking to those who voted for Donald Trump last time,” Biden said Monday. “I know many of you were frustrated. Angry. You believed you weren’t being seen or respected or heard. I get it. It has to change. I promise you this: It will change with me.”

Biden also portrayed Trump as a wealthy elitist who is out of touch with the concerns of working Americans.

“Frankly, I’ve dealt with guys like Trump my whole life. Guys who look down on you because they’ve got a lot of money. Guys who think they’re better than you. Guys who inherited everything they ever got in life. And then squandered it.”

...Biden kept his remarks mostly focused on swaying Trump voters. Trump won Wisconsin by less than 1 percentage point in 2016, and the state is one of the Biden campaign’s top targets this time around.

“The simple truth is that Donald Trump ran for office saying he would represent the forgotten men and women of this country — and then once in office, he forgot us,” said Biden.

Wisconsin: An ABC/Washington Post poll found Trump losing non-college white women to Biden by 9 points after he took them by 16 points in 2016. Trump won the Badger State by less than 1 point.
Pennsylvania: An NBC/Marist poll showed Biden tying Trump among white voters after Trump won them by 16 points in 2016. Trump also won that state by less than a percentage point.

Nationally, Trump won white voters by fully 20 points, 57%-37%, while Clinton won every other racial group by very wide double-digit margins.

Kamala Harris’ Supreme Opening

“President Trump’s Supreme Court plans have created a major opportunity for Sen. Kamala Harris to go on offense,” Axios reports.

“A confirmation fight puts Harris back in the spotlight thanks to her role on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“Allies still point to her grilling Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2018 (clips of which have racked up millions of views on YouTube) and they laugh at her ‘suggested … hinted … inferred?’ exchange with Attorney General William Barr in May regarding the Mueller report.

“Those are the electric moments that you can’t always learn during debate prep, and allies say they show that Harris is

MASSIVE ANTARCTIC glaciers are falling apart, which could spell deep trouble for global sea-level rise. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has added another climate denier to lead an agency that is supposed to follow the science.

The warning on the Antarctic glaciers came last week in a paper by an international group of scientists, including a researcher at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Satellite images show that the Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers, which flow along the Amundsen Sea, are losing integrity along their edges. Over the past decade, crevasses and fractures have appeared in the “shear zones” that restrain their movement toward the ocean. The glaciers are moving more rapidly into the sea.

The scientists warn that the damage appears to be part of a vicious cycle “where initial ice shelf weakening triggers the development of damage in their shear zones, which results in further speedup, shearing, and weakening, hence promoting additional damage development,” the paper, printed in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, explains. “This damage feedback potentially preconditions these ice shelves for disintegration.”

The disintegration could herald the collapse over time of the whole West Antarctic ice sheet, which contains enough ice to raise seas over time by some 10 feet — without accounting for other melting ice sheets in, say, Greenland.

Republicans argued that the current rules should stay in place because people have plenty of time to obtain and return ballots.
Both sides expect a close election in the battleground state, which President Trump won by fewer than 23,000 votes in 2016.

New York City was among three cities labeled “anarchist jurisdictions” by the Justice Department on Sunday and targeted to lose federal money for failing to control protesters and defunding cops, The Post has learned.

Portland, Ore., and Seattle, Wash., were the other two cities on the list, which was approved by US Attorney General William Barr.

“When state and local leaders impede their own law enforcement officers and agencies from doing their jobs, it endangers innocent citizens who deserve to be protected, including those who are trying to peacefully assemble and protest,” Barr said in a statement set to be released Monday.

“We cannot allow federal tax dollars to be wasted when the safety of the citizenry hangs in the balance,’’ the AG added.

“It is my hope that the cities identified by the Department of Justice today will reverse course and become serious about performing the basic function of government and start protecting their own citizens.”

The Blue Wave Tsunami is not going away.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden holds a 12-point lead over President Trump among likely voters who identify as Catholic, according to a poll released Monday.

A EWTN News/RealClear Opinion poll found in a poll of 1,212 likely Catholic voters that 53 percent favor Biden, compared to 41 percent who prefer Trump. The poll was taken before the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The poll found that 50 percent of respondents voted for 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton while 45 percent voted for Trump, a sign that Biden has widened the gap among Catholic voters.

Catholics who are more devout about going to church tend to back Trump, according to the poll. Fifty-eight percent of Catholics who attend Mass daily back the president, as do 61 percent of those who attend services more than once a week. By comparison, 69 percent of Catholics who seldom attend Mass support Biden.

Trump leads among white Catholic voters by 5 percentage points, the poll found. Among Hispanic Catholics, Biden has a commanding 63-31 lead.

The poll found that Catholics are overwhelmingly opposed to demonstrations that have devolved into defacing churches or toppling statues of prominent figures in the religion like Christopher Columbus, but respondents still trust Biden more than Trump on nearly every issue.

The Hill

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

This is a moment to get mad and to get even. The way to do that is to crush President Trump and pulverize the Republican Party in the coming election.

Trump has the power to name a replacement for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died last week. He says he will nominate a woman, surely an archconservative just raring to kill the Affordable Care Act and reverse Roe v. Wade. The GOP-led Senate has the power to confirm her. And because it can, we should expect that it will.
Doing so would be hypocritical, given the way Republican senators held up Merrick Garland’s Supreme Court nomination, cynical and corrosive to the very idea of democracy. But so what? We’re talking about Trump, who desperately wants voters to focus on something other than the nearly 200,000 people who have died of covid-19 on his watch. We’re talking about Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who could not care less what mere citizens might think. And we’re talking about the Senate Republicans, who reliably roll over and give Trump and McConnell whatever they want.

No one can stop them if they decide to go through with this putsch-like power play. But Democrats can make them pay by taking their power away. All of it.

If you’re angry about how the GOP is tilting the Supreme Court, the first thing to focus on is booting Trump out of the White House and into well-deserved obscurity.

Four years ago, too many Democrats — especially young people and African Americans — stayed home on Election Day. Just 80,000 more Democratic votes spread across Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania would have given Hillary Clinton, not Trump, the power to nominate three Supreme Court justices, shaping the high court’s ideological makeup for decades to come.

I don’t know who those Clinton-appointed justices would have been, but I know they wouldn’t be Neil M. Gorsuch, Brett M. Kavanaugh and whoever Trump picks later this week. The Supreme Court has to be made a turnout-driving issue for Democrats, the way it has long been for Republicans.

That doesn’t mean, however, letting the battle over replacing Ginsburg become the central issue in the campaign. Joe Biden needs to continue hammering away at Trump’s weaknesses: his abysmal and tragically dishonest performance on the covid-19 pandemic; the economic devastation that resulted from his failure to contain the virus the way leaders of other rich countries did; and his decision to respond to the movement against systemic racism by championing Confederate monuments and channeling bitter White grievance.

Trump knows he is losing and wants to change the subject. Don’t let him.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The other vital task for Democrats is taking control of the Senate. In some of these races — unlike in the presidential contest — the Republicans’ approach to the Supreme Court should be a more central focus.

“I want you to use my words against me,” Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) said in 2016, as Republicans were denying even the courtesy of a hearing to Garland, President Barack Obama’s high court nominee. “If there’s a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say Lindsey Graham said let’s let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination.”

Now Graham vows to fast-track Trump’s court pick. His Democratic challenger, Jaime Harrison — with whom he is statistically tied, according to polls — has already begun hammering Graham as a man whose word cannot be trusted.

GOP Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Martha McSally of Arizona and Thom Tillis of North Carolina trail their Democratic opponents; while Cory Gardner of Colorado, Joni Ernst of Iowa, Steve Daines of Montana and Graham are also in serious trouble. If Democrats win any four of those seats, then even if Democrat Doug Jones gets ousted in deep-red Alabama, McConnell’s majority is gone.

If he stays true to form, McConnell will plow forward and try to fill Ginsburg’s seat before the election. But if he decides that doing so would threaten his control of the chamber — or if enough endangered or moderate Republicans balk — he could decide to delay the deed.

He could still do it in the lame-duck session, even if Trump and the Republicans are given the kind of landslide whipping they deserve. But we, the people, will have spoken with a roar. And, come January, Democrats will have the power to do a lot more than nurse their anger.

Why Amy Coney Barrett is hands-down best pick to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Picture a female jurist who has consistently defied social expectations imposed on women and whose legal thinking is closely bound up with her faith. No, I’m not talking about Amy Coney Barrett, reported to top President Trump’s list of candidates to fill the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat. I’m talking about Ginsburg herself.

Ginsburg believed fervently that conventional expectations shouldn’t hinder women as they seek their full, fair share of public life. Nor was she shy about how her Jewish faith shaped her judicial mind. In an essay for the American Jewish Committee published in 1993, she wrote: “Laws as protectors of the oppressed, the poor, the loner, is evident in the work of my Jewish predecessors. . . . The biblical command ‘Justice, justice shalt thou pursue’ is a strand that ties them together.”

By those criteria, Barrett would make a most worthy successor to RBG. In nominating the 48-year-old Louisianian, the president would present the nation with an inspiring vision of what it means to be an American woman in 2020 — one that could by turns surprise and captivate the suburban women Trump is keen to court while also delivering for the GOP base.

In the global battle against the pandemic, few countries drew as much scrutiny and frequent criticism as Sweden during the early days. While the United States and most of Europe shut down their economies and put everyone on lockdown, the Swedes largely went about their business with no mandates for the wearing of masks or prohibitions on public gatherings. Sweden initially experienced a surge of novel coronavirus cases as compared to its neighbors. And then it felt like we stopped hearing about them quite so much. So what's been going on?
As this report from the Associated Press indicates, what's been going on has largely been... not much, at least in terms of the virus. Sweden only made slight modifications to its policies after the initial surge, but largely stuck with the herd immunity strategy. And now, just as much of Europe is experiencing a second surge in cases, Sweden has some of the lowest numbers in all of Europe. So did their herd immunity strategy actually work?

..

Among Sweden's population of ten million, they currently have a total of 14 people in ICU beds fighting COVID. In the past two weeks, they have reported 30.3 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people. By comparison, Spain is at 292.2 and France reports 172.1. That's a rather startling difference.

...

This should leave us to wonder if that wasn't the ideal solution from the beginning. If we had locked down the nursing homes and provided relief to everyone over the age of 55 so they could stay home, along with anyone with a doctor's note saying they had underlying respiratory or immune system issues, could we have just left the rest of the economy running?

WASHINGTON — The National Institutes of Health said on Monday that a public relations staffer who had been using a pseudonym on a conservative website to attack Dr. Anthony Fauci, who runs the agency, and discount the seriousness of the coronavirus will retire.

The Daily Beast first identified and reported that William B. Crews was also the managing editor of right-leaning website RedState where, under the fake name “streiff,” derided the government’s work against the coronavirus outbreak, calling it "massive fraud."

The articles directly contradict and demean the agency's recommendations about COVID-19. They also trash Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, calling him a "mask nazi," among other insults.

Other media outlets later reported the NIAID said it "first learned of this matter this morning" and "Mr. Crews has informed us of his intention to retire. We have no further comments on this as it is a personnel matter."

Many of his posts alluded to coordinated schemes by public health officials to damage Trump politically. "Streiff" wrote that the "Trump administration were failed at every turn by" Fauci.

In closing, I wish to note that in the last 40 years alone the UK has had seven official epidemics/pandemics; AIDS, Swine flu, CJD, SARS, MERS, Bird flu as well as annual, seasonal flu. All were very worrying but schools remained open and the NHS treated everybody and most of the population were unaffected. The country would rarely have been open if it had been shut down every time.

I have explained how a hopelessly-performing diagnostic test has been, and continues to be used, not for diagnosis of disease but, it seems, solely to create fear.

My grandmother passed away 3 months ago. We weren’t allowed to have a funeral due to COVID. I guess she wasn’t as important as Ginsburg so no exceptions could be made for families like mine to say goodbye to her one final time.

I can think of other big funerals that were allowed by the ruling state

His flip-flops make Kerry look like an amateur.

Of course we should be kind to him because of the dementia and let him get his needed rest.

“As is common in Cuba, where red tape is rampant, the trademark was not approved until much later, until March 2010. It expired in 2018, well into Trump’s presidency.”
