Covid cases at all time high, so what to Democratic Governors and Mayors advocate now?

Let's reopen the economy!

Lori Lightfoot, the mayor of Chicago (the center of a state averaging about 6000 new cases and 150 new deaths a day) is the latest Democrat who has made the determination that "now" it the time to reopen their economy.

This comes down after Governors Gavin Newsom and Andrew Cuomo have made statements about reopening their economies. California is averaging over 40,000 new cases a day and had over 600 deaths yesterday alone. New York cases and deaths are ramping up as well, reaching levels of new cases that they have never seen before.

Meanwhile, even the media is getting in on the kick

This is most certainly a story that we would not have been allowed to read in the MSM a three months ago, when Trump was still President and the election was still in doubt. Pretty much since the beginning of the Covid outbreak there has been a constant argument between liberals and conservatives about whether or not these lockdowns were effective for anything other than bringing down the economy.

Apparently we (conservatives) were right all along and liberals were wrong all along.

Admitting that three months ago might have changed the election.

But I would take it one step further. Without offering that this was any sort of organized conspiracy, it seems clear that there was never any hesitancy in many Democratic leaders to shut down the economy knowing full well that it would likely harm Trump's reelection chances. In other words, they were probably more likely to "want" to believe that these lockdowns would be successful, given that they would also be politically advantageous.

Moreover, they were provided the cover of being able to do everything in lockstep under the pretense that they were listening to the experts.

Think about it. It was a brilliant manner to gaslight their electorate. They champion the lockdowns, knowing full well that they can blame the President for their own decisions. Because somehow they were able to convince liberals that the entire Covid virus was the fault of the bad orange man.  If the lockdowns worked, then they are forever heroes, who saved us from Trump. But they could also just argue that if the lockdowns didn't work, that it was still Trump's fault for apparently not supporting them.

Either way, they win or Trump loses. According to the media and their base.

But now here we are. A country in chaos. Many cities financially devastated to the point where they may never come back. The virus quite literally becoming worse by the day and will likely continue for some time (as the herd immunity from vaccines could take months). There appears to be no easy way out at this time.

Moreover, in a couple of weeks, Democrats will claim the White House and both chambers of congress. Now everything will be on their shoulders. Some are probably attempting to figure out how they can spin this politically for their own good? So they will do what they generally do.

They will take advantage of the gullibility and short memories of their liberal electorate and make the decisions to start to open things back up at a time when it would (by all liberal conventional wisdom) be 180 degrees from what they should be doing.

Oh, and moving forward, they will start to grease the wheels to the idea that the shutdowns and economic devastation was all the idea and fault of the bad orange man. They never wanted to do what they ended up doing. They are not responsible for those decisions and the impact. It's all Trump's fault.

Maybe they can impeach him again for ruining the economy with those faulty lockdowns?

Operation Warp Speed leaders waited more than two months to approve a plan to distribute and administer Covid-19 vaccines proposed by U.S. health officials, administration officials said, leaving states with little time to implement a mass-vaccination campaign amid a coronavirus surge.

State and local officials had been clamoring for months for help preparing for the largest vaccination program in U.S. history when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a playbook in September to guide them.

The CDC had wanted to start helping states plan in June how to get people vaccinated. But officials at Operation Warp Speed rebuffed the agency’s plan for distributing vaccines. They adopted a similar plan in August only after exploring other options—and then held the release of the CDC’s playbook for states for two weeks for additional clearance and to put it out with another document, the officials said.

Operation Warp Speed was supposed to be a high-water mark of the Trump administration’s coronavirus response, but it stumbled at the finish line because of problems in federal planning and foresight. Now, the public-private partnership is scrambling to speed up vaccinations, adjusting eligibility guidelines while states race to increase their abilities to administer doses on a large scale.

“They didn’t plan for the last inch of the last mile, the part that matters most—how you’re going to actually vaccinate that many people quickly,” said Dr. Bruce Gellin, a former Health and Human Services vaccine official and president of global immunization at the Sabin Vaccine Institute.

The federal government has distributed more than 30 million doses, about a third of which have been administered, according to the CDC. President-elect Joe Biden said Thursday he would urge Congress to provide $160 billion in funding to launch a national vaccination program, among other Covid-related items, and set up community vaccination sites nationwide.

JAMES MURDOCH Blasts U.S. Media for ‘Insidious Forces’
3:51 pm
James Murdoch has castigated the US media to the Financial Times for the “toxic politics” threatening American democracy, saying proprietors are as culpable as politicians who “know the truth but choose instead to propagate lies.”

Asked whether America’s dominant conservative news network Fox News had played a role in the riot that rocked Washington last week, James Murdoch said media groups had amplified election disinformation, leaving “a substantial portion” of the public believing “a falsehood.”

He added: “The damage is profound. The sacking of the Capitol is proof positive that what we thought was dangerous is indeed very, very much so. Those outlets that propagate lies to their audience have unleashed insidious and uncontrollable forces that will be with us for years.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

WASHINGTON — President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr., racing against a surge in coronavirus cases and the emergence of a new variant that could significantly worsen the public health crisis, is planning a vaccination blitz that calls for greatly expanding access while emphasizing equity in distribution, including to those in jail.

But his plan is colliding with a sobering reality: With only two federally authorized vaccines, supplies will be scarce for the next several months, frustrating some state and local health officials who had hoped that the release of a federal stockpile of vaccine doses announced this week could alleviate that shortage. Trump administration officials clarified Friday that the existing stockpile would only go toward giving second doses to people who had already received the vaccine, and not to new groups of people.

“The vaccine rollout in the United States has been a dismal failure so far,” Mr. Biden said. “The honest truth is this, things will get worse before they get better. And the policy changes we are going to be making, they’re going to take time to show up in the Covid statistics.”

The president-elect said he would invoke the Defense Production Act, if necessary, to build up vaccine supply. But the team also sought to tamp down expectations. Mr. Biden said his plan “won’t mean that everyone in these groups will get vaccinated immediately, because supply is not where it needs to be.” But, he added, it will mean that as doses become available, “we’ll reach more people who need them.”

The Biden team promised to ramp up vaccination in pharmacies, and build mobile vaccination clinics to get vaccine to hard-to-reach and underserved rural and urban communities.

Mr. Biden spoke of “the tragic reality of the disproportionate impact this virus has had on Black, Latino and Native American people,” adding that “equity is central to our Covid response.”

Like the Trump administration, Mr. Biden called for states to expand the vaccine eligibility groups to people 65 or older.

The administration will also make “programs available for high-risk settings, including homeless shelters, jails and institutions that serve individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” the fact sheet said.

In some respects, Mr. Biden’s proposals echo those of the Trump administration, which also called earlier this week for opening vaccine eligibility to groups to 65 and older, making greater use of pharmacies and moving vaccinations to federally qualified health centers. The Trump administration has also frequently used the Defense Production Act to give vaccine makers priority with suppliers for raw ingredients and other materials.

Mr. Biden unveiled the vaccine distribution plan just one day after he proposed a $1.9 trillion spending package to combat the economic downturn and the Covid-19 crisis, including $20 billion for a “national vaccine program.” The president-elect has said repeatedly that he intends to get “100 million Covid vaccine shots into the arms of the American people” by his 100th day in office.

In many ways, Los Angeles was uniquely vulnerable to the crisis.

Pandemic fatigue set in as cooler weather and shorter days approached, making outdoor activities less inviting even in a region known for its temperate climate. This coupled with holiday travel, gatherings and a large essential workforce, with many members living in crowded or dense housing, created a confluence of problems.

"At least the way this virus is transmitting, you don’t need to have Hell's Kitchen-type of urban density," said Dr. George Rutherford, also an epidemiologist at the University of California San Francisco. "Los Angeles has small family housing with lots of people in them. It’s hard to be a gardener working from home."

The convergence of environmental factors continues to confound public health officials, who have repeatedly warned that the next few weeks could be the worst of the pandemic as the post-holiday surge continues.

On Monday, county public officials issued new recommendations for essential workers and people who run essential errands to wear masks inside their own homes to avoid infecting loved ones, especially those with high-risk factors.

"One of the more heartbreaking conversations that our health care workers share is ... when children apologize to their parents and grandparents for bringing Covid into their homes, for getting them sick," Hilda Solis, chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, said during a news conference on Tuesday. "These apologies are just some of the last words that loved ones will ever hear as they die alone."

According to county public health officials, the recent surge started at the beginning of November shortly after private gatherings were permitted, personal care services reopened, the Dodgers won the World Series and Halloween

Less than a month later, the county was forced to reintroduce restrictions first enacted in the spring, including ending outdoor dining, limiting the number of people allowed inside essential businesses and prohibiting multiple households from gathering, indoors or outdoors. A modified stay-at-home order was issued around Thanksgiving, but by then cases were already increasing exponentially.

“Once you get behind the eight ball, it's hard to put the genie back in the bottle,” Bibbins-Domingo said. “That’s the situation you don’t want to be in.”

6:05 pm
“Frustrated by the loss of his Twitter account and forced to accept that he soon must leave office, President Trump has effectively stopped doing his job, delegating daily responsibilities to Vice President Mike Pence while hunkering down with a shrinking group of acquiescent aides and contemplating additional presidential pardons,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“Trump had considered leaving the White House before his final day in office Wednesday, even as early as this weekend, but he has opted to depart on the morning of President-elect Joe Biden’s Inauguration Day, according to two people familiar with discussions who cautioned that, with Trump, plans are always subject to change.”

“Intrigued by the idea of upstaging Biden, the ever self-centered president has requested a major sendoff. It would begin with a throng of cheering, flag-waving staffers and supporters to see him off on the White House’s South Lawn, and continue to a more formal ceremony at Joint Base Andrews, featuring a red carpet, military band, color guard and 21-gun salute. He’ll make his final Air Force One flight to Florida, to take up residence at Mar-a-Lago, his West Palm Beach, Fla., estate.”

*The president’s top economic adviser Larry Kudlow has criticised his boss in The Wall Street Journal over his response to the deadly insurrection at the Capitol.

*Meanwhile, the president has reportedly sought to reunite with former adviser Steve Bannon while increasingly isolating himself from others and as several members of his Cabinet announce their resignations.

*With his impeachment trial looming in the Senate, GOP leader McConnell has reportedly told his colleagues to “vote their conscience.”

*A growing body of Republican lawmakers have indicated they could break from their party to convict the president, who will no longer be in office when his trial begins.

*Federal prosecutors have unsealed grim accounts from inside the hall of Congress as law enforcement pursues more serious charges of violence against rioters after initial misdemeanors, with mounting evidence from an increasingly large digital footprint.

*Lawmakers have also launched an “immediate review” into the Capitol building’s security infrastructure.

*House Speaker Nancy Pelosi warned hat “if in fact it is found that members of Congress were accomplices to this insurrection, if they aided and abetted the crime, there may have to be actions taken beyond the Congress in terms of prosecution for that."

TRUMP LEAVES BEHIND A GOP MESS
PART ONE
Prosecutors Interview Michael Cohen About Trump
8:44 am
“New York prosecutors conducted an hourslong interview Thursday of Michael Cohen, President Trump’s former personal attorney, asking a range of questions about Trump’s business dealings,” the AP reports.

“The interview focused in part on Trump’s relationship with Deutsche Bank, his biggest and longest standing creditor.”

PART TWO
The Pariah Post-Presidency
7:48 am
New York Times: “In the final days of his presidency, Mr. Trump has been snubbed by foreign allies and banned from social media. Some members of his cabinet fled, and some in his own party helped deal the final blow of a second impeachment. High-profile friends, like the New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, are declining national honors to avoid being in his presence. His hometown wants little to do with him.

“Mr. Trump arrived in Washington as an insurgent, an unlikely politician who defied the odds to win the White House. He departs isolated and diminished, leaving behind a Capitol transformed into a war zone, a frayed body politic and a fractured Republican Party that has been ousted from power.”

PART THREE
Senate GOP Adrift Ahead of Trump Trial
7:46 am
Politico: “Senate Republicans talk as a party as many as three times a week during normal times. But these times are anything but normal. The Senate GOP has not spoken as a conference for more than two weeks now.

“Now, as McConnell’s conference prepares to enter minority status and faces another grueling impeachment trial, senators are largely being left without guidance from leadership over how to come down on Trump. The conference, so divided now over the outgoing president, is being given space to breathe.”

PART FOUR
Republicans Headed for a Bitter Internal Showdown
7:38 am
“As President Trump prepares to leave office with his party in disarray, Republican leaders including Senator Mitch McConnell are maneuvering to thwart his grip on the G.O.P. in future elections, while forces aligned with Mr. Trump are looking to punish Republican lawmakers and governors who have broken with him,” the New York Times reports.

“The bitter infighting underscores the deep divisions Mr. Trump has created in the G.O.P. and all but ensures that the next campaign will represent a pivotal test of the party’s direction, with a series of clashes looming in the months ahead.”

PART FIVE
Trump Blows Up the Arizona GOP on His Way Out
7:32 am
“The Trump era did more damage to the Republican Party in Arizona than almost anywhere else. Over the past two years, Republicans lost both Senate seats. In November, the state flipped Democratic in a presidential race for the first time since 1996. The GOP state party chair is currently at war with the governor,” Politico reports.

“President Trump’s fingerprints are on all of it, yet the state party will likely pass a resolution next week to officially “support & thank” the president. It’ll also vote on measures to censor three prominent Republicans who were deemed insufficiently beholden to Trump: Gov. Doug Ducey, former Sen. Jeff Flake and Cindy McCain, the wife of the late senator.”

PART SIX
McEnany Leaves the White House
7:27 am
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany packed up her office in the White House on Friday, Bloomberg reports.

During her final press conference, given the day after the Capitol riot, she spoke for a total of two minutes before vacating the podium without answering any questions.
______________
She spoke for two minutes, sort of defending Trump, slammed her book shut and went running for the door. LOL.

We’re Just Finding Out How Bad the Riot Really Was
9:34 am
David Graham: “January 6 not only could have been much worse—it was much worse than was initially apparent. Sometimes real-time coverage of news events leans toward the sensational and overstates what happened. But because reporters were unprepared for the violence, and because of the fog of war (and tear gas), the horror of this event has emerged slowly.

“Many people were able to see the stakes on January 6, but it was much harder to see how close a larger catastrophe was to occurring, much less how much harm was actually done.”
___________

(Yeah, what if those who were yelling "Where are they countin' the votes!" and "Hang Pence!" had broken into rooms where officials were hiding? They almost did.)

PART EIGHT
A Premeditated Election LIE Lit the Fire
9:29 am
Axios begins a series looking into President Trump’s final two months:

“For weeks, Trump had been laying the groundwork to declare victory on election night — even if he lost. But the real-time results, punctuated by Fox’s shocking call, upended his plans and began his unraveling.”

Despite hospitals overflowing with patients, heartbreaking numbers of deaths and COVID-19 infection rates hovering at dangerous levels, there are some signs that the daily increase in the number of coronavirus cases is beginning to flatten in California.

It may take a few more days or weeks to be assured of the trend — and the flattening could be reversed if people ease up further on mask wearing and social distancing. But a number of state and local officials are voicing cautious optimism that the unrestrained, exponential daily worsening of the pandemic has slowed.

Gov. Gavin Newsom described the flattening numbers as “light at the end of the tunnel,” adding that the coronavirus test positivity rate and the number of people in hospitals and intensive care units with COVID-19 have been declining.

“We’ve seen some encouraging signs,” Newsom said. “But now, more than ever, it’s incumbent upon us not to let our guard down, not to let our masks off and to make sure that we’re doing everything in our power to maintain that discipline purposefulness to work our way through yet another surge.”

“We’ve seen some encouraging signs,” Newsom said.

and from gavie's private vineyard.

and all within hours of a drooling dementia patient taking the helm.

Perhaps someone should tell rat that according to the dictionary a pederast usually goes for little boys, not "men."

SOMEBODY'S IN DEEP TROUBLE
Lawmakers Not Told of Police Request for Backup
10:38 am
New York Times: “The Capitol Police asked the sergeants-at-arms to request that the National Guard be placed on standby. But the sergeants-at-arms, Michael C. Stenger of the Senate and Paul Irving of the House, rejected the request without raising the issue with either the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, or Speaker Nancy Pelosi.”

RIOTERS IN DEEP TROUBLE
Follow the Selfies
10:21 am
Bloomberg reports that “selfie-snapping rioters” at the U.S. Capitol last week left the FBI a trail of over 140,000 images.

(including some of rat's friends and maybe rat himself?)

TRUMP IN DEEP FINANCIAL TROUBLE
Prosecutors Expand Probe Into Trump Finances
10:18 am
“The Manhattan district attorney’s office has expanded its criminal investigation into the Trump Organization’s finances to include the family’s compound in Westchester County,” CNN reports.

“Prosecutors’ interest in the 212-acre property called Seven Springs is a significant widening of an investigation that began more than a year ago. It also draws closer to President Donald Trump’s son Eric Trump, executive vice president of the Trump Organization, who was directly involved in discussions about the property now under scrutiny.”

Bloomberg: Trump’s shambolic empire faces long odds for one more comeback.

Re THREAD TOPIC:
Europe Shuts Schools Again
1:50 pm
“As U.S. authorities debate whether to keep schools open, a consensus is emerging in Europe that children are a considerable factor in the spread of Covid-19—and more countries are shutting schools for the first time since the spring,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Closures have been announced recently in the U.K., Germany, Ireland, Austria, Denmark and the Netherlands on concerns about a more infectious variant of the virus first detected in the U.K. and rising case counts despite lockdowns.”
__________

I believe it is becoming apparent that the "more infectious variant" is now loose in the U.S.

Does this mean that irresponsible people like Scott need to shut up about criticizing the "ineffectivness" of shutting down and masks and distancing, and follow instead
1) scientific and actual evidence
2) common sense?

It is irresponsible for either Democrats or Republicans to base what we do on political considerations rather than on what is actually happening.
