There are several issues involved here.
First - McConnell likely cannot stand in the way of an actual impeachment trial. Not unless the certain court battles regarding the constitutional nature of impeaching a President after he leave office prevents it. Many constitutional scholars believe that you must first convict an office holder as a means to remove them from office, before you can go forward with any other forms of discipline. If you cannot remove him, then there is no reason to hold the trial. It's possible that McConnell may still hold that line or that a court might provide for that.
So the idea that he is not standing in the way is moot. Moreover, he has notified Schumer that he will NOT call for an emergency session in order to remove Trump before the 19th (one day before his term is technically up). This suggests that he might be looking at the impeachment is moot angle. While that is a possibility, it's a certainty that McConnell does not believe that it's important to remove the President before the 20th. If he was in favor of impeachment, then he would certainly want it done as soon as possible.
Second - People within McConnell's office are on record as saying he is against it (as of last night). Other statements have said he will consider the charges carefully. Nothing has suggested that he is a supporter or will vote to impeach the President.
Third - The entire process is moot unless you can get to 67 votes. That would require 17 members of the Senate to vote in favor of impeachment. You might get Murkowski and Romney. But after that the pickings are awful slim. Most Republican Senators are from very red states. They will not buck their constituents.
Moreover, It's one thing to get 10 out of approximately 210 Republican House members (less than 5%). It's another to get nearly a third of your Senators to vote in favor of it. As of today, Senator Manchin is bucking his own Party by coming out against impeachment. Whether or not that signals a "no" vote is anyone's guess. But he knows which way the winds are blowing
Lastly - It's doubtful that your Senate leader will side with two or three outliers in something like this. Not if he wants to keep his clout and leadership in check. He is also smart enough to know that if he pisses off the Trump supporters, that there is pretty much ZERO chance of retaking the Senate or the House in 2022. Trump got more votes than any Presidential Candidate in the history of the Republican Party. They would be wise to keep him (and his followers) engaged.

McConnell Is ‘Furious’ with Trump
January 12, 2021 at 8:00 pm EST
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) supports Democrats’ move to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Trump and is “done” and “furious” with him, Fox News reports.
Several GOP sources told CNN that McConnell supports convicting Trump in a Senate trial then there will almost certainly will be the 67 senators required.

Said a former Pence adviser: “Pence is done with Trump’s bullshit. He’s not going to give a prime time speech saying, ‘F you Donald Trump,’ but in his own way he is going to just get to the finish line and keep his head down.”
New York Times: Pence reached his limit with Trump. It wasn’t pretty.

“There’s a better than 50-50 chance that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would vote to convict President Trump in an impeachment trial,” sources tell Axios.
“This would represent one of the most shocking and damning votes in the history of American politics, by the most powerful Republican in Congress. McConnell’s vote would open the door to the possibility that Trump could be convicted and prohibited from running for president again.”

“Top Republicans want to bury President Trump, for good. But they are divided whether to do it with one quick kill via impeachment, or let him slowly fade away,” Axios reports.
“Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would be more likely than not to vote to convict Trump — a green light for other Republican senators to follow.”
“House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy would love a Trumpless world, but doesn’t want to knife him with fingerprints. This school of thought wants to let Trump do himself in, without a big party fight over his sins and sentence.”

McConnell Says He’s Undecided on Impeachment
January 13, 2021 at 3:13 pm
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told his Republican colleagues concerning an impeachment trial, via ABC News: “While the press has been full of speculation, I have not made a final decision on how I will vote and I intend to listen to the legal arguments when they are presented to the Senate.”
Taegan Goddard thinks that it all comes down to Mitch McConnell.

Headline from another article:
McConnell Doesn't Rule Out Impeachment
SO IS ALL THAT JUST FAKE NEWS, SCOTT?
Yahoo News:
Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday did not rule out voting to convict President Donald Trump as he was being impeached by the House of Representatives.
"While the press has been full of speculation, I have not made a final decision on how I will vote and I intend to listen to the legal arguments when they are presented to the Senate," McConnell said in a note to Republican colleagues.
Multiple press reports Tuesday said that McConnell, a steadfast ally of Trump for four years, was supportive of Democrats' decision to impeach him, believing he warranted the punishment after encouraging a mob to attack the US Capitol on January 6 as Congress certified President-elect Joe Biden's win.
But McConnell's office on Wednesday confirmed that he would not reconvene the Senate until January 19, the eve of Biden's inauguration, meaning Trump is virtually certain to serve out his term.
However, a conviction in the Senate could lead to a decision to bar Trump from running again in 2024, a relief to those Republicans who have feared incurring his wrath.
McConnell faithfully carried out Trump's agenda and helped ensure his acquittal after his first impeachment by the House in December 2019.
But the Senate leader broke with him on his attempts to overturn the election results, arguing passionately that the move would mark a "death spiral" for US democracy.
McConnell is set to lose his control of the Senate to the Democrats who won two runoff elections in Georgia last week.

McConnell desperately wants the GOP to get shut of Trump, I think.
McConnell Doesn't Rule Out Impeachment.
He was outraged by the President.
If Senator Schumer goes behind closed doors and discuss opening up the hearings, because the majority leader and the minority leader agree, they can open up.
Another point is that to convict requires a 2/3 majority of members present. If 20 or so Republicans don't appear in the Senate room, he could be convicted and removed from the White House.
And a resolution that declares that Trump can't run for federal office requires a majority.
rrb is wrong again because McConnell believes that the President has committed impeachable crimes.

Donald Trump’s selfishness and the cynicism of GOP officials who backed his half-baked effort to overturn Joe Biden’s Electoral College win are of a piece. And they were compounded by the president’s ability to simply lie to tens of millions of people without any mediation. Removing that ability—or, rather, removing just a few of the many tools that the president has at his disposal for communicating with the public—has led some of his defenders to make allusions to George Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece Nineteen Eighty-Four. This is ridiculous: Donald Trump has more in common with the novel’s Big Brother, and his supporters have more in common with the novel’s Party, than do any of his critics in the tech industry or his political opponents in the Democratic Party.
Here is a man with no fealty to the truth, no ambition higher than maintaining his own power. Here is a man whose greatest hope is to control the proles, to fill their heads with falsehoods about outside enemies and internal betrayers. Here is a man who demands access to your screen to spew his propaganda regardless of whether or not the companies who operate those screens have any interest in handing it over to him.
Here is a man, finally, who wants to reshape the world as it is to a world that better suits him. What better illustration is there of doublethink—“to know and not know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies,” as Orwell put it in Nineteen Eighty-Four—than Senators Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley objecting to the Electoral College results despite being smart enough to understand that Trump has lost every step of the way? What better illustration of memory-holing than Trump’s insistence that his speech before the riot did not include instructions to march on Capitol Hill?

All winters are dark, and get darker the farther one lives from the equator. We tend to think of dark days as something in the past, something our parents or grandparents lived through. It was a dark winter in 1777-78, when the Continental Army spent the season at Valley Forge.
Biden warned you about The Dark Winter and 4,000 lives would be lost by the President
An interesting new twist on the impeachment is that Pelosi just handed Trump a national platform to put the 2020 election on trial. And the media would be forced to cover it.

Trump Releases Video After Impeachment
January 13, 2021 at 6:28 pm
Less than two hours after he was impeached for inciting an insurrection, President Trump released a video in which he condemned the siege at the U.S. Capitol but did not take any responsibility.
Trump didn’t even mention his second impeachment, though he called out “efforts to censor, cancel and blacklist our fellow citizens are wrong and they are dangerous.”
He also falsely claimed “no true supporters of mine could ever endorse political violence.”
_____________
LIAR.
HE HIMSELF ENDORSED IT OFTEN. "FIGHT LIKE HELL," WERE AMONG THE LAST WORDS HE TOLD THE MARAUDING CROWDS HE SENT TO THE CAPITOL.
And in this video, obviously written to try to make him seem like a peacemaker, he does not mention that he has again been impeached, nor does his even hint that Biden's election is legitimate.
He does, it is true, call for total non violence.
Too bad he waited till now.
Will the monsters he has created agree to observe that? Doubtful.

Senate Will Hold Hearing for Biden’s Intelligence Chief
6:20 pm
“Senate Republicans are heeding calls to protect national security, agreeing to hold a confirmation hearing Friday for Joe Biden’s nominee for director of national intelligence,” Axios reports.
"The hearing will take place at noon via WebEx. It will occur virtually, since senators are in recess until Jan. 19. The hearing will be held by the Senate Intelligence Committee, whose top Democrat is Mark Warner of Virginia.”
Trump’s personality, even more than his politics, oozes authoritarian ugliness. The fact that his authoritarianism is so utterly ordinary, shared by millions around the world, gives no comfort. To take the anti-intellectual crudeness of his persona, his incessant bullying, his disdain for the cherished norms of liberal democracy, and his erratic behavior from “The Apprentice” and move them into the West Wing—this is a special kind of affront to “blue America.” Trump feels vindicated by the mere fact of having been elected President—a fact that he brings up constantly. He has more power than any one person in this country to influence the lives of millions, yet he shows no signs of comprehending the significance or moral responsibility of this. Why not destroy the families of immigrants? They’re not even white. Like a spoiled, spiteful, indifferent king, he makes no pretense of listening to or representing us—half the nation—in any way. In this respect, he is worse—more personally contemptuous of liberal norms, traditions, and accomplishments—than Nixon, Reagan, and Bush. If Trump were more religious he would resemble a pre-Enlightenment figure; it would be difficult to find a less scientifically informed member of the upper class. And yet the whole country, it seems, is held hostage to his narcissistic wounds, authoritarian rants, and Twitterstorms.

Trump Is Isolated and Angry
10:41 pm
“When Donald Trump on Wednesday became the first president ever impeached twice, he did so as a leader increasingly isolated, sullen and vengeful,” the Washington Post reports.
“With less than seven days remaining in his presidency, Trump’s inner circle is shrinking, offices in his White House are emptying, and the president is lashing out at some of those who remain. He is angry that his allies have not mounted a more forceful defense of his incitement of the mob that stormed the Capitol last week.
“Though Trump has been exceptionally furious with Vice President Pence, his relationship with lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani, one of his most steadfast defenders, is also fracturing… Trump has instructed aides not to pay Giuliani’s legal fees."
New York Times:
“White House officials have started blocking Mr. Giuliani’s calls to the president.”

GOP Senator Says History Will Hold Trump Accountable
8:41 am
Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) called the Trump-backed mob that invaded the Capitol a week ago “an insurrection,” but stopped short of signaling he’d support the impeachment article that passed in the U.S. House of Representatives once that measure to remove President Trump reaches the U.S. Senate, the Fargo Forum reports.
Said Rounds: “When the story of this last 90 days is told, they will clearly lay out that the president of the United States misled very, very good, honest, patriotic Americans by telling them time and again that the election was stolen. I believe that history will hold him accountable.”

A Preordained Coda to a Presidency
7:55 am
“Not since the dark days of the Civil War and its aftermath has Washington seen a day quite like Wednesday,” the New York Times reports.
“In a Capitol bristling with heavily armed soldiers and newly installed metal detectors, with the physical wreckage of last week’s siege cleaned up but the emotional and political wreckage still on display, the president of the United States was impeached for trying to topple American democracy.
“Somehow, it felt like the preordained coda of a presidency that repeatedly pressed all limits and frayed the bonds of the body politic. With less than a week to go, President Trump’s term is climaxing in violence and recrimination at a time when the country has fractured deeply and lost a sense of itself. Notions of truth and reality have been atomized. Faith in the system has eroded. Anger is the one common ground.”
It’s Still Trump’s Party

“He lied about the election being fixed. He incited an attack that left five dead at the U.S Capitol. He got impeached. Twice. But polling indicates Republicans still have his back — and views — by vast majorities,” Axios reports.
