Impeachment arguments going so well that member of both Parties got up and left

Approximately fifteen Republicans and five Democrats were not in chambers

Only 12 million Americans across all platforms have bothered to watch so far

Were they bored or just didn't care?

Today the Trump team puts up a defense that they expect to complete today, in spite of being provided with two full days if they wanted. The reality is that the law is on their side and the facts are on their side, so unlike the Democrats (who were forced to pound the table for two days) - they have a simple lucid argument to make that won't require all that much time.

The author of a tweet introduced by Democrats at the Senate impeachment trial said Thursday her statement "we are bringing the Calvary" was a clear reference to a prayer vigil organized by churchgoers supporting Trump and not a call for military-like violence at the Capitol riot as portrayed by Rep. Eric Swalwell.
Jennifer Lynn Lawrence also said she believes the California Democrat and House impeachment manager falsified her tweet, adding a blue check mark to the version he introduced at the trial suggesting she was a verified Twitter user with more clout when in fact her Twitter account never had a blue check and has never been verified.

So you know your case is bad when you have to doctor and misrepresent tweets!

TRUMP'S PROSECUTORS DID SUCH A CONVINCING JOB THAT---

Donald Trump’s legal defense will focus entirely on process,
Axios reports.

WHY? BECAUSE---

“The attorneys representing the former president know it’s fruitless to continue defending his actions preceding the Capitol attack.
Instead, they’ll say none of that matters because the trial itself is unconstitutional — an argument many Republican senators are ready to embrace.”

Senate GOP Sees Trial Ending Trump’s Chances In 2024

7:01 am
“Senate Republicans, including those who do not plan to vote to convict former President Trump, say this week’s impeachment trial has effectively ended any chance of him becoming the GOP presidential nominee in 2024,” The Hill reports.

“From the viewpoint of some Republican senators, the compelling case presented by House prosecutors carries a silver lining: It means they likely won’t have to worry about Trump running for president again in three years, while at the same time eroding his influence in party politics more generally.”

IN OTHER WORDS, THEY AGREE WITH ME:

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY HAD BETTER BE SAYING,
"THANK GOD WE WON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HIM! ANYMORE!"

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Why will Trump's defenders wrap up their case so quickly by focusing only on process?

Could it be because--
“The attorneys representing the former president know it’s fruitless to continue defending his actions preceding the Capitol attack."

A well made case!

BE SURE NOT TO READ THIS, FOR EXAMPLE:

Jonathan Bernstein:
“As it turned out, for the most part the evidence the managers presented was vivid and persuasive in most places. But there was one big exception:

"Trump’s actions during the insurrection. For that, the managers had to rely on news sources that were neither convincing nor comprehensive.

"Did Trump really revel in the riot?
To what extent was he involved in efforts to secure the Capitol?
Did people have to work around him?

"I don’t know if definitive answers to those questions would change anything, but in my view we don’t have full answers to any of them. It’s a real failure of what was otherwise a very good job by the House managers.

“That said: No senator has voted yet.
Witnesses could still come forward on their own and provide news interviews, or even just on-the-record statements, of what they know.
It sure seems to me that anyone with direct evidence, whether it helps or harms Trump, should spill the beans now.”

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley issued stunning remarks breaking with former President Trump, telling Politico in an interview published Friday that she believes he “let us down.”

“We need to acknowledge he let us down,” Haley, who served in her ambassador role under Trump, said. “He went down a path he shouldn’t have, and we shouldn’t have followed him, and we shouldn’t have listened to him. And we can’t let that ever happen again.”

Haley’s remarks are her strongest yet against the former president in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and come as Trump's legal team is set to present its defense of Trump on Friday in his second Senate impeachment trial.

The House impeached the former president for a second time shortly after the insurrection, saying his unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud following his election loss to President Biden and his comments earlier that day incited the mob that stormed the Capitol.

The former South Carolina governor told Politico that she has not spoken with Trump since the mob attack, further expressing her disappointment with remarks he gave at a rally ahead of the assault condemning his own vice president, Mike Pence.

“When I tell you I’m angry, it’s an understatement,” Haley said. “I am so disappointed in the fact that [despite] the loyalty and friendship he had with Mike Pence, that he would do that to him. Like, I’m disgusted by it.”

Haley said that the president "believes he is following" his oath of office by challenging the election results, adding, "There’s nothing that you’re ever going to do that’s going to make him feel like he legitimately lost the election."

"He’s got a big bully pulpit. He should be responsible with it," she said.

Haley in the days immediately following the attack said in a speech to Republican National Committee (RNC) members that Trump was “badly wrong with his words” at his Jan. 6 rally.

The national Democrat majority is presently out

United States Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, R-New York-22 was forced to wait months to take her rightful seat in “The People’s House.”

This was the direct result of one political ploy after another to delay the certification of Tenney’s victory over former Congressman Anthony Brandisi.

Even when Tenney officially won, the Democrats refused to stop their antics. Here’s the latest disgraceful Democrat action.

Former White House Press Secretary deserves the media credit for breaking this story.

When the 117th Congress of The United States was sworn in on January 4, 2021, each member was permitted to have a family member in the House Gallery to witness.

However, the ever petty, small-minded Speaker Nancy Pelosi denied the request for Tenney. Why?

Oh, by the way ... Tenney’s son is a graduate of The United States Naval Academy.

This paves new low ground for the despicable, partisan politicians of today.

The new Socialist Democrats keep on lying that they want to unite the American people.

Exactly how does a dirty, political circus stunt like this promote unity?

Pelosi denied a fellow duly elected member the opportunity for her United States Military son to attend his Mother’s official swearing-in ceremony.

This is one of the most small-minded, vindictive, disgraceful and divisive acts that you’ll ever see. It’s a reflection of everything that’s wrong in politics, today.

There should be no politics played on occasions such as this.

An official swearing-in ceremony should be pure, joyful and free from any politics.

But, they just can’t help themselves.

There is just no low that they won’t go.

NOTE: Nancy Pelosi Is the same disgusting elected official who ripped apart a copy of President Trump’s State of the Union Address (live) before a national audience.

it was a premeditated act, as video exists showing her pre-tearing the pages.

Pelosi should’ve been censured for this disgraceful act. She never was.

Former President Donald Trump offered to deploy “as many as 10,000 National Guard troops,” ahead of Jan. 6 to support law enforcement, according to his one-time White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.

Meadows, during an interview on Fox’s “Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo,” said that in January and “throughout the summer … the president was very vocal in making sure that we had plenty of National Guard, plenty of additional support because he supports our rule of law and supports our law enforcement and offered additional help.”

He added, “Even in January, that was a given, as many as 10,000 National Guard troops were told to be on the ready by the Secretary of Defense. That was a direct order from President Trump and yet here is what we see, all kinds of blame going around but yet not a whole lot of accountability. That accountability needs to rest with where it ultimately should be and that’s on Capitol Hill.”

Meadows later said, “I can tell you that when we look at Washington, D.C., the Capitol Police, many of them are my friends. I can tell you they do a tremendous job, but they need to be empowered to do that job, and there were plenty of assets there to assist them in their efforts. And some of those decisions weren't made appropriately, in my opinion, and those decisions did not come from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, it came from the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue.”

If this was credible evidence the MSM would have carried it.

But Mark Meadows is not a credible source.

Los Angeles Times
Opinion: Do Senate Republicans understand patriotism?
by Scott Martelle
Fri, February 12, 2021, 12:16 PM

The nation just spent three sobering days watching Democratic members of the House lay out a deeply compelling case that the president of the United States urged his supporters to come to Washington, fired them up at a “Save America” rally outside the White House in which he lied, yet again, about a stolen election, and then sent them off down the National Mall to do something about it.

“Patriots,” President Trump called them.

Maybe he misspoke. Maybe he meant to say “rioters” but jumbled the pronunciation.

Or maybe he has no clue what patriotism really is. To most people, patriotism doesn’t involve violently attacking police, invading the U.S. Capitol on search of elected officials as a makeshift gallows sits outside, and trying to stop the peaceful transfer of political power.

On Friday, lawyers for the former president are trying to defend his atrocious behavior, in which they are attacking Democrats for using the word “fight" in their own speeches, and votes in previous electoral certifications challenging the results — basic "whataboutism."

Never mind that they are not comparable examples. Politicians — left and right — urging supporters to fight for a cause is not the same as Trump exhorting political violence among his supporters, promising to pay the legal bills if they get arrested, and on Jan. 6 telling the rally, “you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong.”

The Senate will face its moment of truth probably over the weekend when it votes on whether Trump should be convicted (even though he has left the office), and then whether he should be barred from ever holding office again. [Already in a majority of the public's mind, he should not!]

The nation already knows that most of the Republican senators will fail this test of courage, many citing squirrelly reasons. It’s too divisive, some say. The House Democrats did not prove that Trump had violated criminal laws about inciting a riot, according to others. The best yet — convicting Trump and barring him from running again would be too divisive.

Too divisive? Where have they been for the past five years? And we shouldn’t hold a president accountable for lighting the fire of insurrection because it might upset some people?

If that’s their fig leaf, someone needs to whisper in their ear that it’s see-through.

The excuse for supporting Trump that seems to be gaining the most traction among Republican senators is that the body cannot convict Trump because he is no longer president, a debatable point (though most constitutional scholars say it can) that also is a deflection. The Senate voted earlier this week that it does indeed have the power to convict Trump, and the looming question before the senators now is whether his actions merit conviction.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Senators who cling to the argument that they will vote against the impeachment because the Senate can’t vote to remove him are simply looking for a justification for evading their responsibility to decide the core question:
Did the president’s actions merit removal from office? Whether the Senate has the power to vote to remove him is no longer the Senate’s issue; it is Trump’s argument to make to the courts.

This is the moment of truth not just for Senate Republicans, but for Republicans nationwide.
Is it a tenet of Republican conservative thought to embrace falsehoods in an effort to undo the vote of the people?
Does political conservatism include supporting attacks on the very structures of democracy?
Or attacks on police?
Or rampaging through the halls of Congress?

Is holding Trump accountable for his actions by forcing him to take personal responsibility,
contrary to conservative beliefs?

We’ll see how the conservatives in the Senate answer those questions over the next few days. And the nation would do well to remember which ones voted as patriots, and which ones voted as sycophants.

The Jack Meadows lie on Fox news was a lie according to Crooks and Liars about 10,000 National Guard troops.

And some of those decisions weren't made appropriately, in my opinion, and those decisions did not come from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, it came from the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue.

Sadly for Trump, Meadows and the rest of Trump's enablers, the timeline from January 6th tells a different story. As we discussed here, Gov. Larry Hogan was denied permission to send the National Guard for 90 minutes, and Moyers on Democracy has a detailed timeline on the insurrection and the events surrounding the siege on the Capitol on January 6th.

The Attack

If the District of Columbia were a state, its governor alone could have deployed the National Guard to crush the riot. Instead, Trump and his Defense Department had that responsibility, and an unprecedented assault on a sacred institution of government succeeded, if only for a few hours.

[...]

(DoD Memo) 1:34 p.m.: DC Mayor Muriel Bowser asks Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy – who reports to Miller – for more federal help to deal with the mob.

Bowser is told that the request must first come from the Capitol Police.

(DoD Memo) 1:49 p.m.: The Capitol Police chief asks the commanding general of the DC National Guard for immediate assistance.

[...]

(DoD Memo) 2:22 p.m.: Army Secretary McCarthy discusses the situation at the Capitol with Mayor Bowser and her staff.

They are begging for additional National Guard assistance. Note the time. It’s been almost an hour since Bowser requested help.

[...]

(D0D Memo) 2:30 p.m.: Miller, Army Secretary McCarthy, and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff meet to discuss Mayor Bowser’s request.

[...]

(DoD Memo) 3:04 p.m.: Miller gives “verbal approval” to full mobilization of the DC National Guard (1,100 members.)

It has now been more than 90 minutes since Mayor Bowser first asked Army Secretary McCarthy for assistance. It took an hour for Defense Department officials to meet, and another half-hour for them to decide to help. And Bowser still doesn’t know the status of her request.

(Memo) 3:19 p.m.: Pelosi and Schumer call Army Secretary McCarthy, who says that Bowser’s request has now been approved.

(Memo) 3:26 p.m.: Army Secretary McCarthy calls Bowser to tell her that her request for help has been approved.

The Defense Department’s notification of approval to Bowser came two hours after her request.

[...]

(DoD Memo) 3:47 p.m. Governor Hogan mobilizes his state’s National Guard and 200 state troopers.

The Defense Department “repeatedly denies” Hogan’s request to deploy the National Guard at the Capitol. As he awaits approval, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) calls Hogan from the undisclosed bunker to which he, Speaker Pelosi, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have been evacuated. Hoyer pleads for assistance, saying that the Capitol Police is overwhelmed and there is no federal law enforcement presence.

[...]

(DoD Memo) 4:32 p.m.: Miller gives verbal authorization to “re-mission” DC National Guard from city posts where most have been directing traffic and monitoring subway stations “to conduct perimeter and clearance operations” in support of the Capitol Police force.

4:40 p.m.: More than 90 minutes after Governor Hogan had requested federal approval to send his state’s National Guard troops to DC, Army Secretary McCarthy calls and asks, “Can you come as soon as possible?” Hogan responds, “Yeah. We’ve been waiting. We’re ready.”

5:40 p.m.: The first DC National Guard personnel arrive at the Capitol. After the Vice President Pence ordered them to be deployed.

Meadows wasn't asked about any of that, of course, because Bartiromo is not a reporter. She's a shameless right-wing propagandist like the faker and rrb and kputz and ballsless and????

Ted Olson, who served as assistant attorney general for Ronald Reagan and solicitor general for George W. Bush — told the National Law Journal that he is now backing impeachment of President Trump.

Said Olson: “This is not just Jan 6. Trump has been attempting for weeks to convince the American public—and duly elected and appointed election officials—that the election was a fraud and was stolen from him, in the face of irrefutable evidence and numerous judicial opinions to the contrary. This was a constant and fraudulent effort to undermine the integrity of American institutions and processes. It culminated, of course, in the violence and lawlessness on Jan. 6.”

I agree with how The New York times diagnosed the ex President's lawyers.

Republican senators praised Mr. Trump’s three-hour defense, during which his lawyers accused House impeachment managers of taking the former president’s words and actions out of context, complained about what they saw as the news media’s unfair coverage of their client and presented many of Mr. Trump’s own talking points and narratives.

It was almost as though Mr. Trump was delivering his defense himself. And lawmakers praised it as a huge improvement over the rambling and disorganized argument delivered on Tuesday by one of his lawyers, Bruce L. Castor Jr., a performance that was widely panned and infuriated Mr. Trump.

The defense lawyers said the House managers manipulated their client’s words and pointed to Mr. Trump’s call to his supporters in his Jan. 6 speech to “peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.”

New details about Trump-McCarthy shouting match show Trump refused to call off the rioters

By Jamie Gangel, Kevin Liptak, Michael Warren and Marshall Cohen, CNN
Updated 8:40 PM ET, Fri February 12, 2021

New details emerge in McCarthy's call with Trump on January 6

Washington (CNN)In an expletive-laced phone call with House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy while the Capitol was under attack, then-President Donald Trump said the rioters cared more about the election results than McCarthy did.

"Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are," Trump said, according to lawmakers who were briefed on the call afterward by McCarthy.

McCarthy insisted that the rioters were Trump's supporters and begged Trump to call them off.

Trump's comment set off what Republican lawmakers familiar with the call described as a shouting match between the two men. A furious McCarthy told the President the rioters were breaking into his office through the windows, and asked Trump, "Who the f--k do you think you are talking to?" according to a Republican lawmaker familiar with the call.

The newly revealed details of the call, described to CNN by multiple Republicans briefed on it, provide critical insight into the President's state of mind as rioters were overrunning the Capitol. The existence of the call and some of its details have been previously reported and discussed publicly by McCarthy.

The Republican members of Congress said the exchange showed Trump had no intention of calling off the rioters even as lawmakers were pleading with him to intervene. Several said it amounted to a dereliction of his presidential duty.

"He is not a blameless observer, he was rooting for them," a Republican member of Congress said. "On January 13, Kevin McCarthy said on the floor of the House that the President bears responsibility and he does."

Speaking to the President from inside the besieged Capitol, McCarthy pressed Trump to call off his supporters and engaged in a heated disagreement about who comprised the crowd.

Trump's comment about the would-be insurrectionists caring more about the election results than McCarthy did was first mentioned by Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, a Republican from Washington state, in a town hall earlier this week, and was confirmed to CNN by Herrera Beutler and other Republicans briefed on the conversation.

"You have to look at what he did during the insurrection to confirm where his mind was at," Herrera Beutler, one of 10 House Republicans who voted last month to impeach Trump, told CNN. "That line right there demonstrates to me that either he didn't care, which is impeachable, because you cannot allow an attack on your soil, or he wanted it to happen and was OK with it, which makes me so angry.
We should never stand for that, for any reason, under any party flag," she added, voicing her extreme frustration: "I'm trying really hard not to say the F-word."

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

"I think it speaks to the former President's mindset," said Rep. Anthony Gonzalez, an Ohio Republican who also voted to impeach Trump last month. "He was not sorry to see his unyieldingly loyal vice president or the Congress under attack by the mob he inspired. In fact, it seems he was happy about it or at the least enjoyed the scenes that were horrifying to most Americans across the country."

As senators prepare to determine Trump's fate, multiple Republicans thought the details of the call were important to the proceedings because they believe it paints a damning portrait of Trump's lack of action during the attack. At least one of the sources who spoke to CNN took detailed notes of McCarthy's recounting of the call.

Trump and McCarthy did not respond to requests for comment.

It took Trump several hours after the attack began to eventually encourage his supporters to "go home in peace" -- a tweet that came at the urging of his top aides.

At Trump's impeachment trial Friday, his lawyers argued that Trump did in fact try to calm the rioters with a series of tweets while the attack unfolded. But his lawyers cherry-picked his tweets, focusing on his request for supporters to "remain peaceful" without mentioning that he also attacked then-Vice President Mike Pence and waited hours to explicitly urge rioters to leave the Capitol.

A source close to Pence said Trump's legal team was not telling the truth when attorney Michael van der Veen said at the trial that "at no point" did the then-President know his vice president was in danger.

Asked whether van der Veen was lying, the source said, "Yes."

Former Pence aides are still fuming over Trump's actions on January 6, insisting he never checked on the vice president as Pence was being rushed from danger by his US Secret Service detail.

It's unclear to what extent these new details were known by the House Democratic impeachment managers or whether the team considered calling McCarthy as a witness. The managers have preserved the option to call witnesses in the ongoing impeachment trial, although that option remains unlikely as the trial winds down.

The House Republican leader had been forthcoming with his conference about details of his conversations with Trump on and after January 6.

Trump himself has not taken any responsibility in public.

Seems to me the prosecution managers should call McCarthy as a witness and make him own up to what he and Trump said on the phone that day when rioters were breaking through McCarthy's windows and Trump was still refusing to call off the rioters because, as he told McCarthy, "Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are."

That's what Trump said, according to lawmakers who were briefed on the call afterward by McCarthy, one of whom took extensive notes on the briefing.

McCarthy insisted that the rioters were Trump's supporters and begged Trump to call them off.
Trump didn't until later.

An Atlanta-area prosecutor plans to scrutinize a post-Election Day phone call between Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger as part of a criminal investigation into whether former president Donald Trump or his allies broke Georgia laws while trying to reverse his defeat in the state, according to a person familiar with the probe.
The individual, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the ongoing probe, said the inquiry by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis will include an examination of the call Graham, a staunch Trump ally, made to Raffensperger 10 days after the Nov. 3 election.
During their conversation, Graham asked the Georgia secretary of state whether he had the power to toss out all mail ballots in certain counties, Raffensperger told The Washington Post in an interview days later. He said Graham appeared to be asking him to improperly find a way to set aside legally cast ballots.
Graham denied that, saying he was seeking information to better understand how the state verified mail ballots. At the time, Trump was trailing Joe Biden by about 14,000 votes in Georgia, which was recounting by hand all 5 million ballots cast in the election.
The call will “be looked at,” said the individual familiar with the investigation — though the person cautioned that little is known about the call for now, or whether Graham violated any laws.
On Friday, Graham spokesman Kevin Bishop said the notion that Graham’s call was improper was “ridiculous.”

This is huge but the words matter

The phone call is a big deal.

Right in the middle of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, then-President Donald Trump defended the attackers to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), CNN reported Friday.

“Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are,” Trump reportedly told McCarthy.

“Who the fuck do you think you’re talking to?” McCarthy responded, according to CNN.

The stunning exchange came during a phone call between Trump and McCarthy. CNN attributed the description of the call to lawmakers to whom McCarthy described the exchange afterward.

CNN reported that its sources described the call as a shouting match.

Trump’s comment reportedly came after a heated exchange between the two men during which McCarthy attempted to get Trump to call off his supporters who were laying siege to the Capitol.

In response to McCarthy’s call for help, Trump reportedly said that the people attacking the Capitol were “antifa” — short for anti-fascists — rather than Trump supporters. That lie has circulated far and wide among Trump’s allies since the attack, but it’s baseless.

McCarthy reportedly pushed back, telling Trump that the attackers were his supporters.

It was at that point that Trump said that he guessed the attackers were simply more upset about the election than the House minority leader.

One of the report’s authors, CNN special correspondent Jamie Gangel, discussed the report on air Friday.

Gangel mentioned that one member of Congress who McCarthy had briefed directly on the call on Jan. 10, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA), confirmed the exchange with CNN.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, one of 10 House Republicans to support Donald Trump's impeachment for inciting the Capitol insurrection, pleaded with those close to the former president — and former vice president Mike Pence — to come forward and reveal what they know about Trump's conduct.

"To the patriots who were standing next to the former president as these conversations were happening, or even to the former Vice President: if you have something to add here, now would be the time," Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.) wrote in a statement released late Friday, on the eve of what is expected to be the Senate's final vote in Trump's impeachment trial.

Herrera Beutler issued the statement amid a new wave of attention on a story she has been telling since last month: that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy relayed details of a phone call he had with Trump while the violent mob was ransacking the Capitol.

In Herrera Beutler's telling, McCarthy urged Trump to call off the mob, to which Trump initially responded that he couldn't because it was made up of left-wing extremists — a falsehood that has been debunked by federal investigators.

When McCarthy refuted Trump, the former president responded, "Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are," according to Herrera-Beutler.

The comment is further evidence that supports the case the House has been mounting during the Senate trial — that Trump ignored his allies' pleas to call off the rioters and demand that they go home. Rather, he seemed more interested, they argue, in continuing to find ways to delay the certification of Joe Biden's victory as president that day.

Herrera Beutler's anecdote dovetails with the revelation from Sen. Tommy Tuberville that he directly informed Trump at around 2:15 p.m. on Jan. 6 that Pence had been evacuated from the Senate chamber just minutes earlier. At 2:24 p.m., Trump tweeted an attack on Pence, saying he lacked "courage" for refusing to unilaterally block Biden's victory.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The Senate impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump should be an opportunity for Missouri Sens. Roy Blunt and Josh Hawley to redeem themselves for blindly supporting a man whose conduct was indefensible. Instead, they continue bringing additional embarrassment to the state after having flirted with the abolition of democracy in favor of keeping a dictator wannabe in the White House.

Hawley, of course, is the Senate’s biggest cheerleader when it comes to asserting that Trump won the Nov. 3 election and that Trump shouldn’t be held accountable for directing a mob to storm the Capitol on Jan. 6. Blunt had the gall to tell reporters that, until a 13-minute video of the Capitol attack was shown to senators on Tuesday, he had never taken so much time to watch what occurred on that “truly a horrendous day.” Both voted against allowing the trial to proceed.

Missourians must not allow themselves to be fooled by the weak boilerplate defenses by Hawley and Blunt. Hawley tweeted on Tuesday: “Today Democrats launched their unconstitutional impeachment trial while President Biden cancels thousands of working class jobs across this country. Americans deserve better.” In fact, a bipartisan majority of senators have deemed the proceeding to be constitutional. And the attempt to divert attention to Biden, who has not canceled a single job, is pathetic but oh-so-typical of Hawley.

Feb. 12, 2021
As they mounted their defense of the former president on Friday, Donald J. Trump’s lawyers made a number of inaccurate or misleading claims about the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, Mr. Trump’s remarks, the impeachment process and 2020 election. Many claims were echoes of right-wing talking points popularized on social media or ones that were spread by Mr. Trump himself.

Here’s a fact check.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers were misleading about what happened on Jan. 6.

WHAT WAS SAID
“Instead of expressing a desire that the joint session be prevented from conducting its business, the entire premise of his remarks was that the democratic process would and should play out according to the letter of the law.” — Michael van der Veen, lawyer for Mr. Trump

False. In his speech on Jan. 6 and before, Mr. Trump repeatedly urged former Vice President Mike Pence to reject the certification of the Electoral College votes, saying Mr. Pence should “send it back to the States to recertify.” Mr. Trump continued his speech on Jan. 6 saying he was “challenging the certification of the election.”

Donald Trump had to called Schoen to get him to rejoin the team.

THE REASON, I THINK, IS OBVIOUS. THOSE NEW REVELATIONS ABOUT THE CONVERSATION BETWEEN McCARTHY AND TRUMP IN WHICH TRUMP SHOWED HIMSELF FOR THE GHOUL HE IS. IT WAS ALL ABOUT HIM FALSELY WINNING THE ELECTION, NOT ABOUT THE LIVES IN DANGER AT THE CAPITOL. "THEY'RE COMING IN MY WINDOW, McCARTHY TOLD TRUMP. DO YOU KNOW WHO THE F YOU'RE TALKING TO?

Rep. Jaime Herrera (R-WA) confirmed on Friday night that the top House Republican, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), told her that former president Donald Trump had sided with the mob during a phone call as the Jan. 6 Capitol attack unfolded, the New York Times reports.

She pleaded with witnesses to step forward and share what they knew about Trump’s actions: “To he patriots who were standing next to the former president as these conversations were happening, or even to the former vice president: if you have something to add here, now would be the time.”

Are Democrats Now Open to Impeachment Witnesses?
7:21 am
“Senate Democrats may be opening up to the idea of extending former President Donald Trump’s historic second impeachment trial and calling witnesses as new details emerge of events surrounding the siege of Congress,” the Washington Examiner reports.

“A report from CNN published Friday evening, offering fresh details about a contentious call between Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on the day of the riot, led at least one Senate Democrat to say he and his colleagues would support extending the proceedings if House impeachment managers indicated a desire for it.”

Said Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD): “If they make a decision to call witnesses, obviously, we would welcome that.”

The Pinocchio Test
A Senate trial for impeached public officials should be fair. But by claiming “due process” violations, Trump’s attorneys are invoking a specific set of rights and protections under the Fifth and 14th amendments that do not apply to impeachment.
And yet, Trump got many of these protections anyway. He got even more than a defendant in court would get; his legal team was able to meet with Republican senators who were serving as jurors.
The Trump presidency may be over, but Schoen and van der Veen have the unfortunate distinction of earning Four Pinocchios just as the show was coming to an end. They and Scott, should read the Constitution.
Four Pinocchios.

That phone conversation between Trump and minority House leader McCarthy is the most damning evidence that has emerged so far.

Let Trump come to the trial and try to defend THAT!

FROM WIKI:
It was reported on February 12, that McCarthy called then President Donald Trump asking for help against the rioters during the insurrection. Trump refused to send the National Guard saying, "Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are". McCarthy responded "Who the f--k do you think you are talking to?". This was reported to CNN by multiple Republican members of congress including Jaime Herrera Beutler and Anthony Gonzalez.
__________

Yes, that's right. McCarty had briefed many of them about the call, and one of them took extensive notes on the briefing.
