Border Patrol officials have been told to deny all media requests for “ride-alongs” with agents along the southern land border; local press officers are instructed to send all information queries, even from local media, to the press office in Washington for approval; and those responsible for cultivating data about the number of migrants in custody have been reminded not to share the information with anyone to prevent leaks, the officials said.
Multiple news organizations, including NBC News, have requested access to or photos from inside overcrowded border processing facilities holding unaccompanied migrant children; they have been denied. The DHS press office released one photo late Tuesday of a mother and child undergoing a health screening inside a border facility, but no wider shots to show conditions or sleeping arrangements.

The Washington Post reports that Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance's investigation into former President Donald Trump is heating up. Last month, Vance's office received Trump's tax records and began digging through the millions of pages of financial records from the past decade.
Including the Manhattan inquiry, the Post reports at least six ongoing investigations that could involve Trump, as well as 29 lawsuits in which he or one of his companies is named as a defendant.

U.S. Postal Service investigators found no evidence to support a Pennsylvania postal worker’s claim that his supervisors had tampered with mail-in ballots, according to an inspector general’s report — allegations cited by top Republicans to press baseless claims of fraud in the presidential election.
Richard Hopkins, a mail carrier in Erie, alleged in November that he overheard the local postmaster discussing plans to backdate ballots received after the Nov. 3 vote and pass them off to election officials as legitimate. Working with Project Veritas, a nonprofit entity that seeks to expose what it says is bias in the mainstream news media, Hopkins publicly released a sworn affidavit recounting those allegations.

Americans are looking forward to another round of stimulus checks and gun shops are looking forward to another round of stimulus stockpiling.
As the House takes its final vote Wednesday on the $1.9 trillion stimulus bill, many Americans are looking forward to spending their $1,400 stimulus checks at the gun store.
“Stimulus check equals gun money,” said Brandon Wexler, owner of Wex Gunworks in Delray Beach, Florida. “I do anticipate that when people get a stimulus check they will spend it on firearms, accessories, high-capacity magazines and ammo, if they can get it.”
Retailers have learned from the previous two rounds of stimulus payments that they can provide a temporary windfall for gun stores.
Al Tawil, owner of Towers Armory, a gun store and range in Oregon, Ohio, said that his weekly sales jumped by about 20% right after mid-April 2020, when many Americans received the first $1,200 stimulus payments from the federal government. He has every reason to believe it will happen again.
“We’re expecting another big sale when the stimulus comes out,” he said. “They’ve got the extra money and people go indulge themselves with something they can’t normally afford. Some people want a car. Some people want a gun.”

In the two days since a gunman killed eight people in the Atlanta area, including six women of Asian descent, groups have gathered in New York City, Seattle and Southern California, with more marches planned for this weekend. Social media has lit up.
Their common theme: The incident is mobilizing Asian-Americans who have seen their communities victimized by hate crimes over the past year, even if police haven’t determined whether the shooting belongs in that category.
At vigils, on Twitter and in workplaces, the slayings seemed to resonate with millions of people in a way that many said was reminiscent of George Floyd, a Black man whose death in Minneapolis police custody sparked a summer of unrest and conversations about race in the U.S.
President Biden ordered flags at federal buildings to be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims and plans to meet with Asian-American leaders in Atlanta on Friday. Many employers were quick to declare their support for racial equity and for Asian-Americans in particular.
Investigators with the sheriff’s office of Cherokee County, site of the spa where the first four people were fatally shot, said Wednesday they had yet to find evidence that the violence was racially motivated. They said 21-year-old suspect Robert Aaron Long told investigators he targeted spas because he blamed them “for providing an outlet for his addiction to sex.”
But Atlanta Deputy Police Chief Charles Hampton Jr. said Thursday that his department was considering all possibilities, including whether the fatal shootings at two Atlanta spas were hate crimes. “We had four Asian females that were killed,” Mr. Hampton said, referring to the deaths in his jurisdiction. “Nothing is off the table.”
Regardless of whether they are found to be hate crimes, many say the emotional impact has been the same.

The daughter of a late New York senator has been identified as the woman caught on video last weekend verbally harassing two Asian Americans on the street in New York City.
Maura Moynihan, the daughter of the late Democratic New York Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, came forward to WABC-TV after the station discovered she was the woman in a viral video going on an anti-China rant against Dan Lee and his wife Maria Ha.
Ha, 25, told WACB the incident began when the senator’s daughter told her to “go back to China.” She then ran back to get her apartment to get her husband. (RELATED: Chinese Official Says American Politicians Promoted Racism And Hatred That Led To Mass Shooting)
Lee, 31, confronted and recorded Moynihan, who was hopping into a cab. From inside the cab, Moynihan can be heard in the recording accusing Lee of “assaulting” her.
“She said go back to f—king China,” Lee said, according to the video posted to Ha’s Instagram account. “Say that racist s—t again. You said Communist China?”
“Well isn’t that where you’re from?” Moynihan said in reply to Lee, the video shows.
Moynihan reached out to WACB to confirm she was the woman from Ha’s viral video once people on social media came forward exposing the late senator’s daughter.
“It had nothing whatsoever to do with any bias or racism or anti-Asian American prejudice, as has been wrongly suggested,” she said in a statement to the station. Moynihan referred to the incident as a “misunderstanding” and denied making any racist remarks.
“I have devoted most of my life to working with and for Asian people, most particularly in the cause of securing basic human rights for the Tibetan people in their continuing struggle against Communist China,” Moynihan continued in the statement.
The New York Police Department’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating the incident, a spokesperson for the department told NBC New York.
Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan passed away in 2003 after serving 24 years in the Senate.
Late last year, Maura Moynihan attended the unveiling of the new Moynihan Train Hall, named in her father’s honor. The $1.6 billion project transformed the more than 100-year-old James A. Farley Building at Penn Station and officially opened to the public on Jan. 1.
Moynihan’s behavior follows an upward trend of hate crimes against Asian Americans over the past year.

Former President George W. Bush said he was “disturbed” and “disgusted” by the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol in an interview streamed online Thursday.
“I was sick to my stomach” to see “hostile forces” storm the Capitol, Mr. Bush said in an interview with The Texas Tribune’s chief executive, Evan Smith. “And it really disturbed me to the point where I did put out a statement, and I’m still disturbed when I think about it.”

BATTLE LINES BEING DRAWN
The conflict in which we are now engaged is stark. The Left hates America and wants to destroy (or “fundamentally transform”) it. The Democratic Party, having drunk the Critical Race Theory kool-aid, is now openly anti-American. So those are the battle lines: on one side, those who love our country and want to preserve it. On the other, those who hate our country and want to destroy it.
Unfortunately, our public education system is almost 100% in the hands of the haters, organized and mobilized by the teachers’ unions. Our children are steadily being indoctrinated in anti-Americanism. But here and there, a few politicians stick up for our country.
Not surprisingly, Ron DeSantis is one of them. He is resisting the infiltration of Florida’s school system by Critical Race Theory, which is simply a long way of saying “racism.”
Critical Race Theory will be explicitly excluded from Florida’s new statewide civics education, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said while unveiling the program.
The Republican governor addressed the academic study while discussing his proposed $106 million initiative to support a new civics curriculum for students at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

“Florida civics curriculum will incorporate foundational concepts with the best materials, and it will expressly exclude unsanctioned narratives like critical race theory and other unsubstantiated theories.”
Racism is worse than an unsubstantiated theory, it has been discredited by thousands of years of experience. Nevertheless, the Democrats are determined to bring it back. DeSantis understands this:
“Let me be clear, there is no room in our classrooms for things like Critical Race Theory,” he said to some applause from a group of supporters, “Teaching kids to hate their country and to hate each other is not worth one red cent of taxpayer money.”
Teaching children the theory, DeSantis continued, was “trying to make people view each other based on race.”
Yes. Critical Race Theory is simply another word for racism, and liberals are determined to stir up as much racial hatred as possible on the theory that racial division helps the Democratic Party. They probably are right, which does not increase my respect for them.
At the moment, Republicans in Washington are trying to hold the line against the Democrats’ radical onslaught. That is critically important work, obviously, as the Democrats are trying to rig things (e.g., via H.R. 1, which unconstitutionally purports to make election integrity illegal) so that Republicans can never govern again. But from a positive perspective, the action is mainly in the states, where governors like DeSantis and South Dakota’s Kristi Noem have carved out tremendous pro-freedom records while building constituencies across the country.
I had Governor Noem as a guest on the Dennis Prager radio show today. She was impressive as always, bringing her calm and sensible demeanor to a conflict with the Biden administration over fireworks at Mount Rushmore on the 4th of July. While old Europe has bragging rights to a robust political narrative about the battle for individual and collective rights that predates American democracy, the American retort has always been the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
In school, we’re taught to regard the Founding Fathers — that Enlightenment crew of landed gentry, farmers, anti-monarchists, slave owners, businessmen, clerics and free thinkers — as demigods who argued and debated their way into founding the world’s first representational democratic republic.
Christian revisionists would go as far as to suggest that Jesus himself was an uncredited member of that assembly and contributed to their deliberations as they sought to bring about “a more perfect union.”
But even those who don’t buy the notion that Jesus deserves an executive producer credit for the founding of America agree that American democracy was born in the stifling hot summer of 1776 in Philadelphia.
The fact that the status of enslaved Black people, women and non-landowners didn’t change after the Revolutionary War didn’t generate a single moment of cognitive dissonance for many who then, as now, considered the Constitution, even in its most primitive form, holy writ rather than an assemblage of legalistic compromises.
Nearly a century after the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, a civil war was fought over the legality of slavery as a necessary tent pole for the economy of the South and the right to export that “peculiar institution” to new states and territories.
That dreadful conflict resulted in at least 700,000 casualties and the military defeat of the insurrectionist-minded Confederacy. Unfortunately, the corrosive ideology of white supremacy was left intact.
Still, that didn’t stop the country from flattering itself by insisting that it was a democracy even as it imposed a century of Jim Crow, which limited access to the ballot box by its Black citizens in the South and many parts of the North.
Women of all racial backgrounds and relative privilege were denied the right to vote, as well. Still, you never would’ve known from listening to our national hymns and patriotic mythologies that huge swaths of the country’s population had been denied the right to participate in the process of self-government enumerated in the Bill of Rights and the amendments that followed.
Until women’s suffrage and the civil rights movement forced the issue of expanding the franchise beyond white males, it was assumed that all was hunky-dory in the “land of the free” and had been since 1788 when the Constitution was ratified — a time when everyone who truly mattered in America got the right to vote.
It took the Civil Rights Act (1964) and the Voting Rights Act (1965) to enfranchise the right to vote of African Americans, regardless of what region of the country they chose to live in.
The first year that African Americans were able to vote for a president of their choice without having to worry about poll taxes, literacy tests, guessing how many jelly beans were in a jar or reciting the state constitution backward and forward was 1968. For those keeping track of such things, that means America officially stopped being an apartheid state 53 years ago. That’s well within the lifetime of all baby boomers alive today.

From the early days of the coronavirus outbreak, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has positioned himself as the Senate’s foremost skeptic of coronavirus expert Anthony S. Fauci. The two have tussled repeatedly.
Paul brought it again Thursday, and Fauci again made clear he has little patience for Paul’s nonexpert theories about the outbreak and Paul’s reading of studies about it.
At a Senate hearing, Paul pressed Fauci on health experts’ continued recommendation of masks even for people who have contracted the virus or who have been vaccinated. Paul repeatedly suggested wearing masks in those cases was “theater” — pointing specifically to Fauci wearing masks even though he has been vaccinated.
“You’re telling everybody to wear a mask, whether they’ve had an infection or a vaccine,” Paul said. “What I’m saying is: They have immunity, and everybody agrees they have immunity. What studies do you have that people that have had the vaccine or have had the infection are spreading the infection? If we’re not spreading the infection, isn’t it just theater? … You’ve had the vaccine, and you’re wearing two masks. Is that just theater?”
In fact, not everyone agrees they have full immunity and/or can’t spread the virus.
Fauci said that, despite the lack of reinfections thus far, we don’t have significant data in two very relevant areas: Whether people who get the vaccine or who have contracted the virus can still spread it, and whether variants of the coronavirus might override any existing immunity. He bristled at the idea that his personal use of masks was “theater.”
“No it’s not,” Fauci said before suggesting, as he has previously, that the true theater was being promulgated by Paul. “Here we go again with the theater.”

Fauci went on to address the specific study Paul had cited that supposedly indicated “everybody agrees they have immunity.” He noted it was not as conclusive as Paul suggested when it came to protection. What Paul was seeking from Fauci was a scientific study - just one - that proved that a mask requirement after either being infected or receiving the vaccine showed that masks should be continued to be required after that condition had been met. Fauci responded with some blather about covid 'variants.' Paul responded by asking - again - for a study, ANY study, that showed why masks should be required of those either infected or vaccinated, taking into account any 'variants'.
And Fauci had precisely NOTHING.

It’s inevitable that reporters will have to rely heavily on law enforcement sources in the first hours after a horrific crime. Amid chaos and wild speculation, the police may be the only ones with any hard information at that point.
But sometimes their information is flawed. And sometimes the way they tell it reflects a damaging bias.
And so it was on Wednesday when Jay Baker, a captain with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia, described the motivations of the man accused of killing eight people, six of them Asian women, at spas in the Atlanta area.
While hedging a bit, Baker told reporters there was no immediate reason to think that the White shooter had a racial motivation.
Why not? Well, because that’s what the suspect told police, Baker said at a news conference Wednesday.
“He apparently has an issue, what he considers a sex addiction, and sees these locations as something that allows him to go to these places and it’s a temptation for him that he wanted to eliminate,” Baker said, sounding strangely empathetic toward Robert Aaron Long, the 21-year-old suspect.

With regard to the broader assessment: how many times are we going to do this? We’ve spent the last five years watching as anonymous officials make major Russia-related claims, only to have those evidence-free claims fizzle.
From the much-ballyhooed “changed RNC platform” story (Robert Mueller found no evidence the changed Republican platform was “undertaken at the behest of candidate Trump or Russia”), to the notion that Julian Assange was engaged in a conspiracy with the Russians (Mueller found no evidence for this either), to Michael Cohen’s alleged secret meetings in Prague with Russian conspirators (“not true,” the FBI flatly concluded) to the story that Trump directed Cohen to lie to Congress (“not accurate,” said Mueller), to wild stories about Paul Manafort meeting Assange in the Ecuadorian embassy, to a “bombshell” tale about Trump foreknowledge of Wikileaks releases that blew up in CNN’s face in spectacular fashion, reporters for years chased unsubstantiated claims instead of waiting to see what they were based upon.
But it keeps the gullible pointed in the right directions, and distracts from the “intelligence community’s” own misdeeds. And nobody’s paid any price for it, so why stop?
