Speaking of polling data.

Politico reports different than the former coldheartedtruth news robotics pjmedia etc.

Biden beats Trump in poll of first 100 days by 12 points

Biden’s overall approval rate was 60 percent, well above Trump’s 48 percent approaching 100 days in office.

President Joe Biden has enjoyed more support than Donald Trump from within his own party in his early days in office, backed by a largely unified Democratic Party.By Ben LeonardApril 28, 2021

Joe Biden earned relatively high marks from both independents and members of his own party through 100 days in office, a new poll conducted by POLITICO and Morning Consult shows, but the president has yet to impress Republicans despite his promises of bipartisanship on the campaign trail and in office.

Eighty-five percent of Democrats polled gave Biden an “A” or “B” grade for his first 100 days in office, while 44 percent of independents surveyed gave Biden the same marks. That’s more independent and intraparty support for Biden than former President Donald Trump got in his first 100 days, when just 32 percent of independents surveyed and 72 percent of Republicans polled gave Trump either an "A" or a "B".

But Trump and Biden got identical cross-party grading, with 14 percent of Republicans giving Biden an "A" or "B" grade, the same marks Trump got from Democrats four years ago ahead of his 100th day. Biden’s overall approval rate was 60 percent, well above Trump’s 48 percent ahead of his 100th day in April 2017, according to the new poll.

Biden has enjoyed more support than Trump from within his own party in his early days in office, backed by a largely unified Democratic Party in the 2020 election and beyond. With his incendiary remarks and unconventional style, Trump was a more controversial candidate and president inside and outside of the Republican Party in his first 100 days. He remains a controversial figure inside the GOP even as he wields outsize influence over the party from his post-presidential residence in Florida.

Biden has called for restoring unity in a divided nation throughout his campaign and while in office, something that 41 percent of respondents gave him an “A” or a “B” for, while 51 percent gave him a "C" or worse. Views on Biden’s calls for unity have been bitterly partisan — less than 10 percent of Republican respondents gave him a “B” or better, while nearly seven in 10 Democrats polled gave him an "A" or "B".

Fifty-three percent of those polled did say Biden has done more to unite than divide as president, while 35 percent said he has done more to divide than unite.

The former did more to divide from day one of his chaotic Presidency lollipop.

A federal grand jury indicted three White men on hate crime and attempted kidnapping charges Wednesday in the death of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man whose fatal shooting last year in coastal Georgia sparked a national outcry.

Travis McMichael, 35; his father, Gregory McMichael, a 65-year-old former police detective; and William “Roddie” Bryan, 51, are already awaiting trial on murder charges, accused of confronting and killing Arbery as he was jogging through the Satilla Shores neighborhood of Brunswick, Ga., in February 2020. The case went months without arrests until a video of the shooting went viral, drawing condemnations and comparisons to a lynching.
The defendants have pleaded not guilty to murder, and their lawyers argue race played no role — that they pursued Arbery in the belief he was behind neighborhood break-ins. But prosecutors have portrayed the men as racist, pointing to texts and social media posts in court. Bryan, who filmed the fatal confrontation on his phone, told investigators that Travis McMichael used the n-word after shooting Arbery, a claim the younger McMichael’s lawyers denied.

The newly announced charges came as officials around the county turn to hate crime laws as a tool against allegations of bigoted attacks. The Justice Department has also emphasized its attention to civil rights protections and to high-profile killings of Black Americans that ignited protests over the past year.

Ben Crump, a prominent civil rights lawyer representing the Arbery family, hailed the federal indictment as “yet another step in the right direction” in a fight to hold people accountable for Arbery’s death.

Trump’s Mishandling of Census May Have Cost GOP Seats
Washington Examiner:
“Some analysts theorize that the Trump administration’s failed attempt to add a citizenship question to the census could have created a chilling effect that resulted in Hispanic and Latino people being under-counted, perhaps accounting for the smaller-than-expected gains for Texas and Florida.”

Said J. Miles Coleman on the possibility of under-counting Hispanics and Latinos harming Republicans: “Those states are controlled by Republicans, so that may be a bit ironic.”

For too long, woke CEOs have been fair-weather friends to the Republican Party: They like us until the left’s digital pitchforks come out. Then they run away. Or they mouth off on legislation they don’t understand—and hurt the reputations of patriotic leaders protecting our elections and expanding the right to vote. Enough is enough. Corporations that flagrantly misrepresent efforts to protect our elections need to be called out, singled out and cut off.

In my nine years in the Senate, I’ve received $2.6 million in contributions from corporate political-action committees. Starting today, I no longer accept money from any corporate PAC. I urge my GOP colleagues at all levels to do the same.

For too long, Republicans have allowed the left and their big-business allies to attack our values with no response. We’ve allowed them to ship jobs overseas, attack gun rights, and destroy our energy companies. We’ve let them smear Republicans without paying any price.

As America’s greatest basketball player observed years ago, Republicans buy sneakers, too. We cast votes, too. And we pay attention when CEOs come after our own just so they can look good for a few editorial pages and radical activists.

To them I say: When the time comes that you need help with a tax break or a regulatory change, I hope the Democrats take your calls, because we may not. Starting today, we won’t take your money either.

President Biden called for a broad reshaping of American society, using his first formal address to Congress to urge a vast expansion of safety net and educational programs while promising to harness the government to create jobs and opportunity for those often left behind,” the New York Times reports.

Politico: “The speech marks an early victory lap for a White House fashioning itself as having one of the most consequential starts to a presidency in American history. It is also an opportunity to build momentum for two proposals — the American Jobs Plan and the American Families Plan — that, if enacted, would alter the course of the country for decades to come.”

CNN: “If there was one argument animating Biden’s speech — and his entire presidency to date — is that more government, when working right, can improve Americans’ lives. It’s a simple proposition that bucks a decades-long trend in both parties toward a smaller, less interventionist Washington.”

Victory said...

Winner: Joe Biden

For a man who dreamed of being president since grade school, and ran for president three times, Biden finally assumed office at age 78. He took the helm at a particularly fraught time in the United States. Or, as he characterized it on Wednesday, he “inherited a nation in crisis.”

“The worst pandemic in a century,” Biden said. “The worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. The worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War. Life can knock us down. But in America, we never stay down. In America, we always get up.”

Throughout his speech, Biden seemed particularly suited for the current moment. He spoke with deep empathy about the hundreds of thousands of lives lost to the Covid crisis, and the millions of workers who lost their jobs during the resulting economic recession. As a president who took office right after a deadly insurrection in the US Capitol, fomented by his predecessor President Donald Trump, Biden spoke sternly about the need for a deeply polarized nation to come together.

“The insurrection was an existential crisis — a test of whether our democracy could survive,” Biden said. “Can our democracy overcome the lies, anger, hate and fears that have pulled us apart? America’s adversaries — the autocrats of the world — are betting it can’t. They believe we are too full of anger and division and rage. They are wrong. And we have to prove them wrong.”

For someone that styled himself as a centrist for much of his career, it’s easy to see how Biden’s already starting to think bigger. Biden made the case for massive federal investment into America’s middle and working classes. He repeated the word “jobs” over 40 times throughout his speech, promising high-paying and unionized work in a new, clean energy economy.

Biden’s proposals — and his plans to raise taxes on the wealthy and corporations to pay for them — are broadly popular with the public. But much as Biden believes he needs to win over public opinion to pass his policies, he also needs to win over Congress. As long as Democrats stay unified, Biden can still pass big pieces of his economic agenda without Republican votes using a procedure called budget reconciliation,
but he and Democrats can’t pass anything related to immigration, policing reform, or universal background checks without Republican support. And that more than likely means none of these items will happen at all.

“I don’t want to become confrontational, but we need more Senate Republicans to join with the overwhelming majority of their Democratic colleagues, and close loopholes and require background checks to purchase a gun,” Biden said at one point, ad-libbing the ‘confrontational’ part.

A president known for his years of bipartisan dealmaking in the US Senate may find himself confronting congressional Republicans soon enough.

President Biden declared “America is ready for a takeoff” as he pitched a sweeping vision for greater government investment to boost the economy Wednesday, including a $1.8 trillion proposal for new spending on child care, education and paid leave.

Addressing a joint session of Congress for the first time as president, Mr. Biden sought to strike a hopeful tone, stressing his efforts to combat the pandemic, expand Covid-19 vaccinations—which he urged all Americans to get—and spur economic growth.

“America is moving. Moving forward. And we can’t stop now,” he said.

Mr. Biden promoted his economic plans to the public, including his new American Families Plan, which is paid for largely by raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans, and his $2.3 trillion infrastructure package that includes new spending on bridges, roads and broadband internet. Mr. Biden cast the massive spending proposals as necessary to help the nation’s economy and workers.

Referring to the family policies, Mr. Biden said it was time to make a “once in a generation investment in our families and our children.”

Dan Rather said...

I don’t know how many presidential addresses to Congress I have covered over the years. I do know most of them felt important in the moment, buoyed and battered by the political, social, economic, and foreign policy winds that blew at the time. They tend to follow a certain well-trod rhythm, which begins days before the speech itself - no shortage of scene setting, by the press, the pundit class, the administration preparing the remarks, and the opposition party that hopes to gain traction for its response. The pageantry can make it all feel monumental, never mind that the speeches themselves are rarely remembered in any great detail and seldom have much or any impact on the trajectory of a presidency.

Nevertheless, there is power in the moment, a way for a president to bask in the full spectacle of American democracy. It is a power transmitted through images as much as words. The stage is an impressive one: a packed Capitol, with Supreme Court Justices, high-ranking officers of the Armed Forces, cabinet secretaries, and illustrious guests up in the gallery. But the main event is between the president, who arrives in dramatic fashion, and the Congress, which is often controlled, at least in one chamber, by the opposition party. As a shorthand for scorekeeping the event, we often find an accounting of which lines of the speech were met with bipartisan applause (always acknowledging the troops and other noncontroversial American institutions and ideals), and which were meant to show the stark divisions between the parties on key areas of legislation and governance.

Tonight’s speech was bound to have some hallmarks of what we have come to expect, but it was also destined to be wholly of its time and thus occupying a unique chapter in our American story. Even before the speech began, we knew this would be different. For starters, the location itself, our beloved Capitol, was but a few months back the scene of a violent insurrection prodded on by the previous president. What we saw on January 6 was an attack on American democracy and the legitimacy of the man who fairly won the November election. It was exactly the opposite of the enduring stability of our system of government that a presidential address is meant to embody.

Intertwined with the insurrection is the state of the opposition party, which has become in large part a cult of personality, infected with conspiracy theories and false grievances. It is clear that many Republicans in both the House and Senate are not there to govern but to line up media hits on Fox News. They would rather talk about “cancelled” Dr. Seuss books than building rural broadband, lies about eating hamburgers than making sure children aren’t going hungry.

And finally, there is the spectacle of the speech itself. The chamber was largely empty, devoid of many of the usual types of attendees. This was of course due to COVID. We may see hopes that the horrific pandemic is waning (at least in the United States), but we are far from declaring any victory. And our fight is being hampered by lies around vaccines and the dangers of the disease itself by those same conspiracy-minded elected officials who are undermining our democracy.

It was into this environment that President Biden arrived this evening, knowing full well the challenges he faced. For all of his political skills, big speech making is not considered to be a particular strength. And for all the energy and accomplishment that has so far defined a muscular start to his term in office, Biden faces the very real prospect that his legislative priorities on urgent needs like infrastructure, voting rights, and climate change will be scuttled by Republicans who stand in almost unanimous lock step opposition to even considering working with him in good faith.

So I turned in tonight driven by curiosity to see his oratorical strategy for handling the moment.

----

It's a historical moment in history.

The “Beltway Bubble,” so perfectly encapsulated in the writings of Mark Leibovich and Chris Buckley, is nearly as self-obsessed as Manhattan. Five years ago, nearly the entire corporate media missed every single warning sign of Trump’s victory. When it happened, they pledged to fix the oversight, vowing to get in touch with a country they so clearly didn’t understand.

The moment of clarity was short-lived, with figures from the top to the bottom of nearly every major outlet quickly reverting to accusing half the country of racism, spending years repeating ridiculous Russia and Ukraine conspiracies, and awarding themselves plenty of prestigious prizes along the way.

Today, they are more out of touch than ever before. Every shock to the system has thus far proven unable to mend the rot, with their delusions instead climbing to even greater heights as they created their own myth of Trump the monster and themselves, the heroic defenders of the city here to return morality to the United States.

How, you might ask, could they possibly report on a country they don’t even begin to understand, never mind defend its morality? It’s delusion, of course. As myths go, far from the ancient Greek hero Perseus, who saved the city from monsters, America’s corporate media resembles the ancient Narcissus, who was so self-obsessed he died alone by a pool of water, staring into his reflection.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden declared that “America is rising anew” as he called for an expansion of federal programs to drive the economy past the coronavirus pandemic and broadly extend the social safety net on a scale not seen in decades.

Biden’s nationally televised address to Congress, his first, raised the stakes for his ability to sell his plans to voters of both parties, even if Republican lawmakers prove resistant. The Democratic president is following Wednesday night’s speech by pushing his plans in person, beginning in Georgia on Thursday and then on to Pennsylvania and Virginia in the days ahead.

In the address, Biden pointed optimistically to the nation’s emergence from the coronavirus scourge as a moment for America to prove that its democracy can still work and maintain primacy in the world.

Speaking in highly personal terms while demanding massive structural changes, the president marked his first 100 days in office by proposing a $1.8 trillion investment in children, families and education to help rebuild an economy devastated by the virus and compete with rising global competitors.
