As reality sets in!

Poll: More Americans now say violent crime is a 'very big problem' than say the same about COVID-19

So the two issues that appeared to vault Biden to the Presidency (Covid and Race) are dropping in terms of what people see as important problems. Now it is possible that some will argue that somehow Biden himself has managed to solve the Covid and the race problems in his four months in office, but something more logical says that is not the case.

Covid was always a limited event and there was always going to be time where people would feel we were on the right track. While just as many people are dying today as were dying back in July of 2020 (when the first poll was taken) the fact that a vaccine is available and that the country has mostly reopened is why people are bullish on the issue. The bigger issue here is that neither Republicans or Democrats really want Covid to be an issue. Now that Trump is no longer around to "blame" for the virus, the media seems less interested in how many cases and deaths are counted daily.

On the flip side there are still many on the left who are loath to let go of Covid and the restrictions in place. There are still liberals out there who "love" the concept of mask wearing and "love" the concept of following the rules set forth by the mighty gods of government. The ability for them to "look down" on people for not following the mandates and restrictions will be sorely missed.

Race relations is a funny one. Nothing much has changed (other than the Chauvin verdict). Race is still in the forefront of the news. Democrats are pushing hard for Critical Race Theory to become somehow codified into legal existence. Democrats in many areas are still pushing police reform, if not police defunding. Democrats are pushing laws that tie aid and assistances to minorities and pretty much everyone not a white male. Democrats still need race to be a big issue in order to push their agenda and probably to win election. They talk about it everyday with increased vigor.

But yet, the issue has started to fade. It's probably a little bit higher (in terms of visibility) than it was prior to the George Floyd fiasco, but it's not where it has been and it will probably not see that sort of concern again. In fact, I might expect that it will continue to fade as the public's viewpoint for CRT and other race motivated government imposed concepts start to meet up with resistance.

In many ways, the increase in people worried about "violent crime" is a reverse correlation to the number of people who view race relations as a problem. When race relations was the big thing, it seemed Americans were willing to accept a little bit of violent crime as a justified reaction to the horrors of being part of the 40% in this country who are not white. Now that the feelings about race are no longer as strong, the idea of "violent crime" is no longer palatable.

Meanwhile as violent crime surges in minority communities and non-white invoked interracial attacks keep piling up, people become concerned by the crime for the crime's sake. When they no longer see it as a temporary situation induced by short term events, it just becomes crime.

And let's be honest here. When the Biden Administration all the up to the Attorney General tell us that the worst crime we have to fear right now is from "White supremacy" - how can we possibly believe that our Administration is taking the real crime seriously. There is only so much you can hide and obscure from the public eye.

Either way, if the 2022 elections are about crime and the economy rather than Covid and race, then the Democrats will certainly be playing defense. With a fairly tough map to navigate (especially in the House) it's going to be extremely difficult for Democrats to hold on to both chambers.

Democrat Defund the Police is working out very well.

Covid was never a "very big problem."

Covid was always a contrived problem to get rid of bad orange man, and to institute election rules to accomplish that.

And violent crime? WAY UP. Especially in democrat-run areas. Inflation will exacerbate this as folks will resort to theft to get what they want/need.

Step 1. Admit you are powerless to resist Trumpism.

Step 2. Recognize that you can't solve this problem alone. The goodness of the majority is needed to restore sanity.

Step 3. Accept that the goodness of the majority is not bound by geographic borders. It's bigger than any individual, even you.

Step 4. Conduct a searching and fearless moral inventory. Identify the real costs of Trumpism for yourself and your life.

Step 5. Come clean. Admit to yourself and at least one other human being the exact nature of your problem.

Step 6. Keep a list of elected officials and candidates who also suffer from Trumpism. You are responsible for helping them.

Step 7. Create a project to address your most dangerous symptoms, e.g., lying, sarcasm, cheating, bullying, bigotry.

Step 8. Make a list of everyone your behavior has harmed. The list will include millions.

Step 9. Make direct amends to those you've harmed wherever possible. Otherwise, make amends in the voting booth.

Step 10. Continue to evaluate your choices. When you backslide, admit your mistake, correct it, and forgive yourself.

Step 11. Recognize that the goodness of the majority isn't perfect. It is simply a platform on which to build a better world.

Step 12. Carry this message and practice these principles in your daily affairs.

Refunding the police. Despite the lies of..

Following calls last summer from groups such as Black Lives Matter to “defund the police,” a number of city officials are now walking back statements to go through with cutting funding to law enforcement due to surges in crime levels.

The Minneapolis City Council several months ago voted to approve $6.4 million more in funding to the police department, coming after a number of councilmembers last year pledged to completely abolish the department.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, a Democrat, announced in May that he’s pushing to increase funding to the city’s police department—coming about a year after George Floyd’s death in police custody, which sparked the Black Lives Matter protests, riots, and arson attacks across Minneapolis.

“The violence needs to stop; it’s unacceptable,” he said earlier in May during a news conference, which came amid a massive spike in violence in the city.

“People deserve to feel safe in their neighborhood, they deserve to be able to send their kids out to the sidewalk to play and to recreate without bullets flying by. That’s unacceptable. We should be holding these perpetrators accountable.”

Frey blamed activists’ calls to defund the police.

“When you make big, overarching statements that we’re going to defund or abolish and dismantle the police department and get rid of all the officers, there’s an impact to that,” he said.

A police officer stands amid smoke and debris as buildings continue to burn in the aftermath of a night of protests and violence following the death of George Floyd, in Minneapolis, Minn., on May 29, 2020. (Charlotte Cuthbertson/The Epoch Times)

Last year, during a protest in Minneapolis, Frey was admonished by Black Lives Matter supporters because he refused to abolish the city’s police force—in a scene that some compared to “struggle sessions” during the Chinese Communist Party-led Cultural Revolution in the 1960s and 1970s. The mayor, however, said he wanted a “structural revamp” of the city’s police force.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, announced this month that his city is building a police precinct in Queens to deal with a spate in rising crime—coming months after he pledged to cut $1 billion from the NYPD’s budget. The city has cut far less from the police department than the pledged $1 billion.

In late April, the mayor said stimulus funding from the federal government will allow for the construction of a new NYPD precinct in southeastern Queens.

“This is something that for decades the community asked for,” de Blasio said at a press briefing last month. “The 116th precinct building was something that could not happen in that environment, because of … trade-offs,” he said. “It was one or the other, which was the choice in 2020. We leaned into the investments in young people. Now, thankfully, we have the resources to address both these issues.”

This comes in the midst of a historic increase in shootings, murders, and other violent crimes. According to NYPD data, there was a 76 percent increase in shootings in March 2021, as compared to March 2020.

In Baltimore, a city that has historically had a high crime rate, the city’s spending board in mid-May approved a budget with a $28 million increase to the police department. In 2020, the city cut about $22 million from the police department’s budget.

The “defund the police” movement has also seen its support plummet since last summer, according to various polls. A recent survey in March showed that just 18 percent of Americans support the cause.

Negotiations with U.S. President Joe Biden over a potentially massive infrastructure investment package are inching forward even though disagreements remain over the size and scope of such legislation, Republican Senator Shelley Moore Capito said on Sunday.

"I think we can get to real compromise, absolutely, because we're both still in the game," Capito said in an interview with "Fox News Sunday."

Capito leads a group of six Senate Republicans who have been in regular contact with Biden and White House aides over a bill the administration wants to move through Congress promptly. read more

The Republican senators have proposed $928 billion to improve roads, bridges and other traditional infrastructure projects. Much of the funding would come from money already enacted into law for other purposes that they argue is unused.

The Biden administration's latest offer in negotiations is for $1.7 trillion and would include federal spending on projects that go beyond traditional infrastructure, such as home care for the elderly. read more

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, speaking on ABC's "This Week," said of the latest Republican counteroffer: "There's movement in the right direction, but a lot of concern."

Buttigieg added, "We need to make investments over and above what would have happened anyway." He also highlighted the need for using the infrastructure bill to address climate change and signaled opposition to shifting COVID-19 relief money to infrastructure accounts.

Two dead and over 20 injured in Miami mass shooting
NBC Universal
May 30, 2021, 11:42 AM
Two people were killed and over 20 injured in a mass shooting in Miami early Sunday, the Miami-Dade Police Department said in a statement.

Three people got out of an SUV and “began shooting indiscriminately into the crowd” that was standing outside a "scheduled event" at an establishment on 186th Street, in the Hialeah area to the west of Miami Gardens, the statement said.

NBC's Miami area station reported that the venue was a banquet hall, which was rented out for a concert.

Investigators were hunting for the suspects who returned to their vehicle and fled the scene after the incident, the statement added.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue found two people dead when they got to the scene and transported eight people to various local hospitals, the statement said, adding that 12 other victims went to hospitals on their own.

At least one victim was transported in critical condition, the statement said.

A mother of one victim said her son called her in the middle of the night and told her he was on his way to the hospital.

“He called us frantic, telling us he had been shot, that it hurts, it hurts and that he loves us and wants us to know," Angelica Green told NBC Miami. "My husband is like 'no stay with us, stay with us.' We hop in the car and we're talking to him to keep him alert."

Miami Dade Police Director Alfredo "Freddy" Ramirez III called the incident "another targeted and cowardly act of gun violence" on Twitter.

It was the second major shooting in the Miami area in as many days. One person died after 7 people were shot on Friday night, the station said.

Calling it a "despicable, cold-blooded act," Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava tweeted that her heart was breaking for the families of the victims.

"We will do everything we can to bring the shooters to justice and turn the tide on this violence," she said.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called for "swift and severe" action to be taken against the shooters in a tweet Sunday.

"We mourn the loss of the two victims and are praying for the recovery of the more than 20 people injured at El Mula Banquet Hall near Hialeah," he said. "We are working with local authorities to bring justice to the perpetrators."

YEAH, BUT DOESN'T THERE COME A TIME WHEN CONDOLENCES AND PRAYERS ARE NOT ENOUGH?

There were at least 200 mass shootings in the country in the first 132 days of this year, a report by the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit research group, said.

Moscow Mitch told them that the investigation because it might hurt their election results in 2022.

What has been uncovered about the attack has only raised more questions:

Why did it take hours for the D.C. National Guard to receive approval to deploy to the Capitol to fight off the mob? Maj. Gen. William J. Walker, the D.C. National Guard commander at the time, has said he did not receive approval to mobilize troops until more than three hours after he had requested it. Defense Department and Capitol security officials have given conflicting statements about what happened.

What was Mr. Trump doing during the attack? He reportedly watched television as a mob stormed the Capitol, but later claimed that he had called in the National Guard, despite his defense secretary testifying that he never spoke to Mr. Trump that day. A Republican member of Congress said she was told that when Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, the House Republican leader, phoned Mr. Trump to ask him to call off the mob, he refused, siding with the rioters whom he said were evidently more upset about the election than Mr. McCarthy was.

What accounts for the lax precautions taken as right-wing extremists and militias openly planned to converge and wreak havoc on the Capitol that dark day? Leaders with the Capitol Police instructed officers to not to use their most forceful crowd control techniques and missed concerning intelligence reports. Security officials reportedly feared the “optics” of sending the National Guard to face off against supporters of Mr. Trump.

How much coordination was there among extremist groups, and to what extent were members of Congress involved in the planning of the rally that preceded the violence? An organizer of the “Stop the Steal” rally said three members of Congress “schemed up” the event with him, though two of the three have denied that claim.

Some on the right who support creating a commission have put forward their own questions, such as demanding more information about the shooting death of a protester, Ashli Babbitt, who was killed by a Capitol Police officer as she tried to force her way into a lobby just off the House floor where lawmakers were taking cover.

And perhaps most importantly, how can the country prevent another similar scenario from happening again?

For the United States, which holds itself out as a beacon of democracy, the rule of law and transparency, the death of the commission has also raised a more fundamental question: What happens when one political party effectively squelches any effort to look inward to assess government failings that have shaken the public’s faith in the nation’s institutions?

Seig Heil...
