Jobs are recovering slower in New York and other states holding on to stringent COVID-19 restrictions than in states that fully reopened their economies, even though continued lockdown measures don’t appear to be saving lives, an ongoing study by WalletHub shows.
Over the course of the year, states imposed and eased a variety of restrictions in response to the level of virus cases and COVID-19 deaths. Where lockdowns were lifted, unemployment fell, but the restrictions didn’t seem to nudge death rates.
By March 8, 2021, for example, New Jersey had recorded 2,656 deaths per 1 million residents, while New York had 2,500 per 1 million residents, according to the Covid Tracking Project. South Dakota had 2,149 deaths per 1 million residents, but loose-rules Utah had just 617.
Over the last year, the strictest lockdown states had an average 1,423 COVID-19 deaths per million people, while the lockdown-light states saw nearly-equal average mortality of 1,449 per million people.
Meanwhile, states that imposed severe lockdowns were also the ones that saw the greatest exodus of residents in 2020, according to an annual study from United Van Lines. States that moved quickest to reduce or eliminate lockdowns are also among the top destinations for movers. The study on state migration found the top states to move away from were New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Connecticut and California, all high-restriction states.
This is obviously very similar to the statistic I used to measure regarding the death rates of states with Republican Governors vs Democratic Governors. This one measured it more by the standards of high lock down vs low lock down, but likely a similar set of states.
The reality is that the virus took time to make it's way around the country and has done so at this point more than once. We have now had more than enough time and more than enough data to show that strict lockdowns and mandates neither seemed to help or hinder the virus.
It did (however) negatively affect the economies of those states who pushed those stricter standards. According to March Unemployment rates, Blue states are suffering from an almost 2% higher unemployment rate (6.5%) as Red States (4.6%). Some of these blue states may never fully recover as businesses have permanently boarded up and may never be replaced, while many red states are already pretty close to pre-Covid rates.
To put this in perspective. High lockdown states a slightly lower death rate of 1423 per million, while low lockdown had a rate of 1449. That is a 1.018 (or 1.8%) difference. Negligible. However, 6.5% vs 4.6% is a 1.413 (or 41.3%) difference. Staggering.
Again, this is the evidence here folks. Studies with dummies blowing snot at each other's faces from 6' apart was never the sort of "science" that was going to offer proof of anything. Proof always comes from testing theories and measuring the results. Those theories have been tested in real live situations and the results have been objectively measured.
Guess what? The lockdowns and mandates did more harm than good. That is just a scientific fact at this point.

The Vaccine Procrastinators
Axios:
“Around 10% of Americans aren’t very eager to get the vaccine, but they’re not really hesitant either — they’re just waiting to get it until they get around to it, according to new Harris polling.”
THIS IS NOT
What Are They Thinking?
Derek Thompson:
“One in four Americans says they don’t plan to take the COVID-19 vaccine, and about half of Republicans under 50 say they won’t get a vaccine. This partisan vaccine gap is already playing out in the real world. The average number of daily shots has declined 20 percent in the past two weeks, largely because states with larger Trump vote shares are falling off the pace.
“What are they thinking, these vaccine-hesitant, vaccine-resistant, and COVID-apathetic? I wanted to know. So I posted an invitation on Twitter for anybody who wasn’t planning to get vaccinated to email me and explain why.”
NOR IS THIS
‘Herd Immunity’ Now Unlikely In United States
New York Times:
“Now, more than half of adults in the United States have been inoculated with at least one dose of a vaccine. But daily vaccination rates are slipping, and there is widespread consensus among scientists and public health experts that the herd immunity threshold is not attainable — at least not in the foreseeable future, and perhaps not ever.
“Instead, they are coming to the conclusion that rather than making a long-promised exit, the virus will most likely become a manageable threat that will continue to circulate in the United States for years to come, still causing hospitalizations and deaths but in much smaller numbers.”
CNN:
Confusion over masks sparks new political showdown.

"That means arguing about wearing masks will remain part of our politics for years to come."

“Seven House Democrats survived the 2020 election even as President Donald Trump was carrying their districts.

Los Angeles county had zero deaths yesterday
rat thinks his body has the right to endanger himself, his loved ones (if he has any) and others.
Rat (if he chooses not to get the vaccine) is not endangering anyone who is vaccinated. Those who are vaccinated are statistically close to immune.
Rat would only technically be dangerous to others who also are choosing not to become vaccinated. Of course, at that point, they are both willingly endangering each other and those who are vaccinated are not really affected.
So other than trying to control the lives of others... what the fuck do you care if Rat or anyone else decides to skip the vaccine?
I know several people who have not and will not get the vaccine. Their reasons vary as much as their ages - from 20 to 70. Some think they dodged a bullet with the J&J vaccine which has turned out to be harmful. Others aren't comfortable with how the vaccines were rushed in their estimation. WE ARE the experiment, to a great degree.
Others are simply appalled at how badly the public messaging has been botched since this began. And if only we had followed the science as much as we followed the political and tyrannical aspirations of so many democrats.
Oh, and why are we still wearing masks after having been vaccinated? TWO MASKS? OUT-FUCKING-DOORS?
Unless you're elderly and/or fraught with comorbidities, I'm not sold on the concept.
I got the vaccine for a simple reason - I'd like to be able to attend events at public venues like Tanglewood and Yankee Stadium that require the vaccine to attend. And I'm not certain the vaccine in and of itself has any value outside of that.
Every fucking person at Slow Joe's speech was vaccinated in December. And all except for Slow Joe himself was masked.
I'm supposed to follow the guidance of those who appear to be stuck on full retard?
I don't think so.
(not in my home state, NC. I had to wear a helmet even on hot days, but it was a good law that saved lives. Ask my friend the surgeon who in the days of no safety belt requirements got one for himself after so often picking bone fragments out of brains.)
Interesting concept when you think about it.
In spite of having a much higher probability of fatal injury a motorcycle has no seatbelt what-so-ever. But you are free to ride a motorcycle in spite of the fact that even a minor fender bender creates the risk if significant injury.
But you cannot drive on the inside of a 3000 pound vehicle and all the protection that provides "unless" you also wear a seat-belt?
It would seem (as a safety concern) that allowing people to drive without a seatbelt and banning the use of motorcycles in question would be a more prudent decision.
Why the fuck do you defend asshattery like rat????? I care in that without everyone being vaccinated that can......we the USA will never return to a semblance of normalcy That's why and we will continue to have assholes like you saying your rights are impinged while affecting the population as a whole !!!!! It's not apples and oranges to point out that in many states of the USA and in many countries of the world a too rapid reversing of
lockdowns have resulted in large surges in covid cases and deaths.
Much more important than troll squad bs from The New York Post right wing media nutcase websites asshole.
Although a plan isn't finalized, an infrastructure package could make up roughly $1 trillion of the larger package, according to the Associated Press, and include a goal of shifting to cleaner energy while improving economic competitiveness. It will increase taxes on corporations and the super rich. But unless you make more than $400,000 a year you won't pay more taxes. Even the richest people support Sleepy Joe Biden.
A second component would include free community college, universal pre-kindergarten and paid family leave – each under a larger umbrella of helping American workers.
The infrastructure and the climate change package will probably pass using the reconciliation process. Even the conservative Democrats will not vote against millions of union jobs, even in West Virginia.
The second package includes free community college, universal pre-kindergarten and paid family leave.
It's going to look like welfare queens bs, I don't think it will happen.
The police reformation plan has support from many conservative Republicans.
If by the end of the summer the infrastructure package will start creating ten of thousands of jobs. And before the election in 2022, if the economy is breaking records, the Democrats might not lose the house and Senate majorities.
MIGHT not WILL.
So other than trying to control the lives of others... what the fuck do you care if Rat or anyone else decides to skip the vaccine?
Exactly.
Logic is always in short supply around here with the leftists who prefer hysteria.
I did get vaccinated for reasons previously stated.
You pose THE question that needs to be asked. I would bet that by summer's end we're at 70-75% vaccinated in the US. That leaves the remainder to acquire their immunity from the herd, or from contracting it themselves and surviving. And if they contract it and die, that's of no consequence to the aforementioned.
Just once I'd like to see the leftists around here think something through without going full-on, hair on fire, apeshit.
Are you vaccinated? If the answer is yes, you have nothing to worry about from those who are not.

Thecoldheartedtruth is vaccines are even better at protecting others.
Even for people who have already recovered from COVID-19, getting fully vaccinated strengthens the antibody and T-cell protection against the disease and likely provides superior protection from variants that can pierce our natural immunity.
Why do more levels of protection matter? Because the vaccines aren’t just about building a defensive wall around safe young bodies. We’re also collectively building a wall around the more vulnerable members of society. And little holes in the wall can lead to unnecessary deaths.
Viruses can mutate, but the vaccines still provide immunity.
There is nothing wrong with protecting others. Especially if you have grandparents! It's not an infringement in your first amendment rights.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), the No. 3 Republican on the House, tweeted Monday that anyone promoting "THE BIG LIE" that the 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump is "turning their back on the rule of law" and "poisoning our democratic system."
Why it matters: Top Republicans are now openly suggesting that Cheney could be removed from her leadership position because of her criticism of Trump, who remains the most popular figure in the GOP. Cheney was one of ten House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Because Jimmy Hitler believes the election was stolen from Donald Trump is "turning h back on the rule of law" and "poisoning our democratic system."
Scott should say something other than making irrelevant comparisons over and over again and again and again and again.

It's not apples and oranges to point out that in many states of the USA and in many countries of the world a too rapid reversing of
lockdowns have resulted in large surges in covid cases and deaths.
Well Reverend...
That was the entire point of this particular study. Over the course more than a year with 50 states in a variety of different degrees of lockdowns and mandates...
The proof is that there is no more Covid deaths attributed to those who have had looser restrictions than those who have kept tighter restrictions in place.
Just like you can find times when states in loose restrictions had higher cases, you can find times when they had lower cases. Same holds true for states with high levels of restrictions (The top five right now in new cases are all states that have had higher lock down levels).
Finding some loose correlation that is not consistent over time is irrelevant when you have the larger amount of data to consider.
So yeah... talking about a moment in time that was different than what we see cumulative over a 12-13 month period is 100% irrelevant.
These restrictions didn't help. Had they helped, we would have seen data over the past 12-13 months to prove it. We haven't.
Why is India having a second wave?
New COVID-19 cases reached an all-time low in India as recently as February, prompting people to resume attending sporting, religious and social events. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for example, held massive political rallies, with crowds of tens of thousands of people.
Modi has also faced accusations that he’s tried to downplay the pandemic, with the government ordering Twitter to remove posts critical of the government's response to the virus.
Environmental factors played a role, as well. Lower humidity in some parts of the country, such as New Delhi, potentially helped the virus spread faster.
And, as in some other parts of the world, the rise of a new variant has complicated efforts to fight the disease.
Nothing in the article about crowds wading in the Ganges.
Your manipulation of statistics is extremely dangerous but you have no empathy whatsoever.
To be clear Reverend...
Last time you suggested there was a significant increase in cases after restrictions were loosened were in regards to the Covid boogyland of Florida, which at the very time you suggested it... was showing as middle of the pack in terms of U.S. states (according to the CDC last 7 day average).
You got some story about it (probably from Goddard) and it was largely incorrect.... or at least statistically incorrect.
Why is California, formerly so strongly criticized by you, doing so well these days regarding number of covid cases, deaths?
Well Reverend...
India is not the only country to have loosened restrictions. In fact nearly every country has loosened it's restrictions over the past few months.
If it was the loosening of restrictions that caused the issue...
Then EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY that loosened restrictions would be seeing the same thing. The fact that they are not, suggests that there is an alternative reason for the surge in India.
That is basic statistics, common sense, and logic 101.
California Has Lowest Covid Rate In America
April 27, 2021 at 4:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 49 Comments
According to the COVID Data Tracker, California averaged just 33 cases of Covid-19 for every 100,000 residents over the past 7 days, which is the lowest of any state in the nation.

Yeah, that's from polwire, but you can there click on the COVID Data Tracker link.
How responsible politicans act responsibly like here, this happens next week.
SoFi Stadium on Sunday will be one of the first major in-person events in Los Angeles County since the COVID-19 pandemic forced a pause on such large gatherings.
Vax Live kicks off at 6 p.m. and will be hosted by Selena Gomez, chaired by Prince Harry and Meghan and features performances by Jennifer Lopez, Eddie Vedder, Foo Fighters, J Balvin, and H.E.R., according to event organizer Global Citizen, an anti-poverty nonprofit.
The event is intended to celebrate the U.S. vaccination campaign as well as help ensure people in other countries get vaccines. The audience will be made up of fully vaccinated healthcare and other essential workers, and they’ll be required to show proof of vaccination, according to the organizers.
Of course there are differences. Some countries which have loosened restrictions are having few problems because they have reached immunity through the percentage of their populations that are inoculated.
Too many Trump influenced Americans are stupidly not getting vaccinated, thus endangering our chance of reaching herd immunity.
India is much more densely populated than the other countries you irrational parallel them.

The Biden administration is considering using outside firms to track extremist chatter by Americans online, an effort that would expand the government's ability to gather intelligence but could draw criticism over surveillance of US citizens.
The Department of Homeland Security is limited in how it can monitor citizens online without justification and is banned from activities like assuming false identities to gain access to private messaging apps used by extremist groups such as the Proud Boys or Oath Keepers.
Instead, federal authorities can only browse through unprotected information on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook and other open online platforms.
The plan being discussed inside DHS, according to multiple sources, would, in effect, allow the department to circumvent those limits. A source familiar with the effort said it is not about decrypting data but rather using outside entities who can legally access these private groups to gather large amounts of information that could help DHS identify key narratives as they emerge.
By partnering with research firms who have more visibility in this space, the DHS could produce information that would likely be beneficial to both it and the FBI, which can't monitor US citizens in this way without first getting a warrant or having the pretext of an ongoing investigation. The CIA and NSA are also limited on collecting intelligence domestically.
It would, however, involve empowering a unit at DHS that is already under fierce scrutiny for its bungled handling of the Portland riots last summer, an episode that included collecting intelligence reports on journalists and unmasking private citizens, according to a source familiar with a recent internal report on the matter.
...
Outsourcing some information gathering to outside firms would give DHS the benefit of tactics that it isn't legally able to do in-house, such as using false personas to gain access to private groups used by suspected extremists, sources say.

Racially black areas have lower income levels and lower access to health care.
Except the vaccine is free and there are pop-up vaccination sites in minority areas across the nation.
I got vaccinated in the hood alky. I was the whitest motherfucker in the place by a wide margin at 7PM, and the dearth of Blacks getting a shot was due to them refusing. Not access.

The powers that be here in NYS are lamenting the fact that blacks are not getting vaccinated at the same rate as whites. And the site I visited both times could not have been more centrally located in the ghetto. I walked in for both injections at approx. 7 pm and there was no line, no waiting. Which is exactly why I chose that particular vaccination site. All the sites in white neighborhoods had ZERO appointments available.
So I took a shot at getting the shot while avoiding getting shot.
Iran released a provocative new video over the weekend that depicts its military forces blowing up the United States Capitol building, a threat that comes as the Biden administration inches closer to providing Tehran with billions of dollars in economic sanctions relief.
The video debuted Sunday on Iranian state-controlled television before Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei delivered remarks, in which he praised the country’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, the paramilitary force that has killed Americans, and celebrated IRGC leader Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a drone strike by the former Trump administration.
In the video clip, armed IRGC forces are seen marching before the U.S. Capitol’s famous dome explodes. It also shows Iranian forces marching on Jerusalem.

Keep pumping more Fiat Money in the system. Look up the term Alky
If you’ve ever wondered what trillions of dollars in monetary and fiscal stimulus looks like, it appears you got your answer. Everything is up right now.
Stocks are up. Earnings are up. Consumer spending is up. Commodities are up. Food prices are up. Home prices are up. Car prices are up. Cryptos are up.
Last week marked President Joe Biden’s 100th day in office. Since Inauguration Day, the S&P 500 has increased an impressive 8.6%. Those are the best returns for the start of a presidential term since Kennedy in 1961. All those stimmy checks have to go somewhere.
With the Federal Reserve signaling it will keep accommodative measures in place for some time longer, and Biden making the case for trillions more in government spending, is this what we can expect going forward?
And with everything up, where are the value buying opportunities?
Pain at the Car Lot and Grocery Store
Before I get into that, it’s important I point out that not every example of price appreciation is being driven strictly by stimulus checks and money-printing. Pandemic lockdowns are still having a massive effect on the global supply of everything from building materials to semiconductor chips, which is driving up production costs that are being passed on to consumers.
Take lumber. Because sawmills have had trouble ramping up production to meet demand, the price of framing lumber has skyrocketed 250% over the past 12 months to around $1,200 per thousand board feet. This has added close to $36,000 to the price of a new home, according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).
Indeed, home prices surged 12% in February compared to the same month last year, S&P Dow Jones Indices reported last week. That’s the fastest annual pace since 2006, soon before the housing bubble burst.
Or take the ongoing chip shortage, which has been exacerbated in recent months by the winter freeze in Texas and a fire at Japan’s Renesas Semiconductor Manufacturing plant. According to Goldman Sachs, the shortage has impacted a whopping 169 industries, most notably carmakers. Last week General Motors President Mark Reuss told Fox Business that the crisis “is probably the worst crisis I’ve seen in the auto industry, at least in my career, in terms of supply chain.”
As a result, the price of used vehicles, as measured by the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index, has increased 52% over the past year. Preowned pickups have jumped an unbelievable 75%.
And then there’s food and consumer staples such as diapers and toilet paper. Recently I shared with you that corn prices have almost doubled over the past year, and last week Bloomberg reported that corn has gotten so pricey that some farmers are feeding their livestock wheat intended for human consumption. A host of consumer goods giants, from Procter & Gamble to Kimberly-Clark, have all announced they’ll be raising their prices in the coming months as commodity prices continue to soar.
Copper Near Record Highs
Iron ore and copper are both near record highs on tight supply and strong demand from China. Copper traded above $10,000 per tonne last week, its highest level in 10 years, as investors anticipate further supply constraints on global efforts to decarbonize and electrify everything.
To give you some idea of what I’m talking about, the NAHB last week recommended to homebuilders that they should start pre-wiring new houses for electric vehicle (EV) charging. That calls for more copper wiring in the home as well as the vehicle.
I found out the real coldheartedtruth was listening to!!!!
Factoring In Covid Mortality Rates
DeSantis also argued that statewide restrictions did not bring any corresponding benefit in limiting covid mortality.
We asked his office for evidence. They again pointed to the CDC increase in “all cause” mortality data that showed California’s rate was slightly higher than Florida’s. But those statistics cover all causes of death, and people are still dying of diseases and conditions besides covid.
We then consulted three epidemiologists to get their take. They all said the governor was playing loose with the facts. They stressed varying factors that affect states’ mortality rates — from the weather to socioeconomic indicators to access to health services.
The epidemiologists pointed to the latest CDC data, which indicated that Florida’s covid mortality rate is higher than California’s and seemed to undercut DeSantis’ position that lockdowns have only hurt states.
As of Feb. 22, Florida ranked 28th in covid death rates while California ranked 33rd, according to the latest CDC data, as compiled by Statista.
“That would bolster the argument that restrictions are one factor involved in lowering death rates,” said Nicole Gatto, an associate professor of public health at Claremont Graduate University in California.
Numerous others also have an effect, Gatto said, so it is impossible to compare states using current data based on their strategies.
“I do think it is an oversimplification to make the assertion that the governor did without further study of the numerous variables involved, characteristics of the population, timing of interventions and the limitations of the data,” she said.
Our Ruling
DeSantis said lockdown states have seen “increased deaths from suicide, substance abuse and despair without any corresponding benefit in covid mortality.”
The pandemic certainly has caused anxiety and distress across the country, and state and local restrictions designed to tamp down on the coronavirus’s spread have also affected people’s financial and emotional well-being. But currently, no clear data supports DeSantis’ strongly worded claim. Researchers agreed that more research is necessary before such broad conclusions could be drawn. In addition, experts said that covid death rates vary by state and numerous factors beyond state strategies to combat the virus affect this metric.
We rate the statement Mostly False.

U.S. stocks climbed on Monday, the first trading day of May, as shares tied to the economic reopening continued to rise.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 300 points. The S&P 500 gained 0.6% and the Nasdaq Composite inched up 0.4%.
Berkshire Hathaway shares rose 1% after Warren Buffett’s conglomerate reported a 20% surge in operating earnings and continued to buy back large amounts of its own shares. Buffett also revealed to CNBC that when he is no longer in charge, Greg Abel, vice chairman of all non-insurance operations, will succeed him.
Bets on the economic reopening led the market advance, especially retailers. Disney and Royal Caribbean rose more than 1% each. Gap rallied more than 9%. Dillard’s rose nearly 10%, while Foot Locker, Urban Outfitters and Kohl’s all gained close to 4%.
The rally in these stocks came after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that most capacity restrictions will be lifted across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, while 24-hour subway service will resume in New York City later this month.
Shares of Verizon rose 0.9% after the telecom giant said it will sell its media group to private equity firm Apollo Global Management for $5 billion. The sale allows Verizon to offload properties from the former internet empires of AOL and Yahoo.
Despite Friday’s weakness in equities, the S&P 500 notched its third straight month of gains in April, adding more than 5% to the index as investors bet on a big economic and profit recovery from the pandemic.
The S&P 500 is now up 11% for the year. The benchmark closed at record levels on Thursday on the heels of blowout earnings results from Apple and Facebook.

Florida and California are currently 28th and 29th in Covid death rates according to Worldometer. There is a negligible difference. Meaning that California's hard line stance has not tangibly helped them versus Florida.
On the flip side...

Florida's unemployment rate is 4.7%
That is a significant difference.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Biden has announced he will finally relocate the 20,000 National Guard troops who have been stationed in D.C. since January. Their new mission will be to infiltrate America's inner cities and shoot menthol cigarettes out of the mouths of unsuspecting smokers.
"Listen, folks-- we gotta do something about these incredibly refreshing and smooth menthol cigarettes," said Biden. "The poor kids like 'em way more than white kids do. Like my Great-Aunt Millie used to say: 'If you don't like menthols, you ain't black!' We have to protect black health. Gotta do it."
Sharpshooters from the Guard will be sent to urban centers like Chicago, Baltimore, and New York, and posted outside carry-outs and gas stations.
"If you so much as raise a menthol to your lips, our trained soldiers will take care of it with their sniper rifles!" said Biden, who went on to say: "Gotta put one, put one on the train and watch it go around. It can't. It can't go around 'cause the pudding is too runny for the Chamber of Commerce to fix the crankshaft... anyway... gotta get rid of the black people cigarettes, folks."
Soldiers will also be trained in advanced take-down techniques to subdue any menthol offenders. BLM and the ACLU have applauded the move and have welcomed increased enforcement of their cities as long as it's not done by the local police. Because drug addicts who are black deserve to die!

MORE ABOUT INDIA
Press freedom empowers The Washington Post’s journalists to investigate how the powerful reacted to the pandemic. It enables us to document consequences of vaccination campaigns, public health recommendations and the many other efforts to control this crisis.
The latest
Thousands of Indian Americans are struggling to support their relatives who must endure a catastrophic surge in cases in India. Reporters Fenit Nirappil and Ambreen Ali describe a split-screen pandemic in the United States, in which Indian Americans contrast vaccine selfies on U.S. social media with the horrors of a vast coronavirus outbreak overseas.
“It’s almost like you’re living in two realities: one where things are getting better in the United States,
and one abroad, where the situation is terrible,” said Sadaf Jaffer, the former mayor of Montgomery Township, N.J., to The Post.
There were more than 400,000 new cases in India on Saturday, a world high. Infectious-disease expert Anthony S. Fauci likened the situation to a “war” in an interview with an Indian newspaper and advocated for a temporary nationwide lockdown.
The crisis in India has had severe knock-on effects: India, a leading exporter of vaccines, has been unable to ship doses since mid-April, hindering the global push for coronavirus vaccinations.
The Australian government is threatening to fine or imprison anyone who returns to Australia from India. Critics say the punishments are racist, but Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison contended the motivation was “about health” in an interview Monday with Australian radio.
We're more than a year into the pandemic. But many of us still grapple with what risks we want to take. Don't be too hard on yourself if you wrestle with this – most people are not natural epidemiologists. We're primed to respond more strongly to anecdotes than data.
Police were among the first workers to be eligible for vaccines based on their profession. But vaccination rates among law enforcement are low, according to police department data. Half of all American adults have received at least one vaccine dose. Just 36 percent of Atlanta officers and 28 percent of employees in Ohio's police division have had their shots. The Post contacted 40 major metropolitan police departments to ask if they were mandating vaccines – none have so far.
We may not come out of the pandemic nicer people than we were before it, writes reporter Roxanne Roberts. But that doesn't mean it won't have changed us. Rebounds from previous calamities such as the flu epidemic 100 years ago suggest we'll be eager to get this all behind us.

"The rebound in U.S. manufacturing slowed in April as businesses struggled to find workers, supply-chain problems worsened, and prices of materials climbed.
The Institute for Supply Management’s April index for manufacturing fell four points to 60.7, the weakest level since January and missing expectations for a slight improvement from the March reading, data released Monday showed"

A question answered by the
Washington Post:
"Less than two weeks after receiving my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine, I've now become infected with covid-19. Even though I had a second injection scheduled, I'm now being told that because I'm infected, I must wait six months for my second shot. Why is that?”
— Gary in Oregon
Although uncommon, people can contract covid-19 mid-vaccination — that is, between the two doses of the messenger-RNA vaccines such as Pfizer and Moderna.
There are various reasons this might happen, but health experts say there is no scenario in which the vaccine itself would cause the infection. Some people may simply feel safer after getting the first injection and let down their guards. Or they may live in a community with higher transmission rates and, therefore, be at increased risk of exposure.
William Moss, a professor of epidemiology and immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said although the mRNA vaccines are considered highly effective, they “are not perfect and are less so after only a single dose, so people can still get infected.”
When this happens, health experts say people should still get the second dose in the vaccine series because the immune response from natural infection is so variable. But depending on when in the process they get sick, they may need to postpone it.
The CDC recommends that people with mild to moderate infection isolate for at least 10 days after the onset of symptoms (or until they have recovered) and at least 24 hours after being fever free. So most people would need to wait at least that long to get the second shot.
Inci Yildirim, a vaccinologist at the Yale School of Medicine, said it is not advisable to vaccinate people who have a fever or are otherwise ill because medical professionals need to be able to differentiate between symptoms caused by infection and those that may simply be a side effect of the vaccine. Also, Yildirim said, people's immune cells need to be healthy to have a more robust reaction to the vaccines.
It's not clear why you were told to wait six months — none of the experts we talked to could explain that. The only instances in which people are advised to wait longer is when they have a medical issue that needs to be managed or when they have had covid-19 and been treated with convalescent plasma or monoclonal antibodies, in which case they are told to delay at least three months, the experts said.
The advice you received could have been an administrative error, or it could be a genuine recommendation based on your specific situation. If you think you should have been told something different, we recommend speaking to your doctor about it.

We've deleted an earlier tweet saying the FBI warned Rudolph W. Giuliani that he was the target of a Russian misinformation campaign, which he has since disputed. This story has been corrected.

Such irony in Ignatius hit piece on Kash and disclosure he’s under federal investigation for leaking classified information—from the same journalist who reported illegally leaked information about classified calls btw Mike Flynn and Sergei Kislyak.

FOR YOUR PANDEMIC SAFETY.
Mark Twain “The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter. ’Tis the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.”
Saying that America is racist is not a radical statement. If that requires a longer explanation or definition, so be it. The fact, in the end, is not altered.

COVID surges in Japan, India follow earlier praise for countries’ mask usage, mitigation success
Major COVID surges in Japan and India in recent weeks and months have followed earlier claims that widespread mask usage was successfully keeping transmission of COVID-19 at low levels in both countries.
Japan in particular was last year hailed as one of the globe's major coronavirus success stories, with its COVID-19 numbers significantly lower than other major countries in the spring and throughout the summer of 2020.
That success was attributed in no small part to widespread mask-wearing, which is ubiquitous in Japan as it is in numerous other Asian countries. Infectious disease experts and public authorities in the New York Times, the Associated Press and the BBC all credited masks with containing transmission rates there.
Yet two large surges in cases in Japan — one that occurred from November into January and one that began in March and is still ongoing — has challenged that narrative, particularly as there is no indication that Japanese citizens stopped wearing masks en masse prior to those spikes. The University of Maryland Center for Geospatial Information Science's COVID-19 World Survey Map indicates no change in the nearly-100% regular mask usage in that country since at least early November.
The Japanese government this week announced a coronavirus emergency, ordering widespread business closures in major cities in the hopes of tamping down the surge. One of the country's top coronavirus advisers also urged Japan to proceed cautiously with the country's planned Summer Olympics in light of the most recent surge.
India, meanwhile, is laboring under a relentless and debilitating COVID surge, with positive test results approaching 400,000 per day, a staggering raw number unmatched by any other country in the world over the past year.
Like Japan, India's success was credited to forceful masking policies: The country last year imposed a strict nationwide mask mandate that included an aggressive ticketing regime and a major public awareness campaign.
Shortly thereafter, virus cases there began to decline. COVID-19 was "consuming" India, the Wall Street Journal reported in December, "until nearly everyone started wearing masks." The BBC, meanwhile, claimed that COVID transmission there was slowed in part because of "the expanded use of face masks." One officer told the Journal that "ninety-nine percent of the people" were wearing masks by December.
...
India currently has the second-highest number of confirmed COVID cases in the world at over 19,000,000, as well as the fourth-highest number of deaths at just over 200,000.
The country's considerable population of nearly 1.4 billion, however, means its adjusted case and death rankings are significantly lower than those of its raw numbers.

I guess the mask is off on masks...
India has 1.4 billion people and 200,000 deaths (though rising)
California has 40 million people and 60,000 deaths
Imagine if California had 1.4 billion people...
and very little health care.
Though both had high mask compliance...
India has been administering hydroxychloroquine when Covid is detected.
Wonder if that has anything to do with their far better outcomes ???
Experts Explain: The case for using hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) to treat Covid-19
Hydroxychloroquine is obviously not a panacea for severe cases of Covid-19. Given early, it helps reduce mortality by about half, compared to those not given the drug.

Of course big tech, the state media and democrats took that off the table for US citizens.
The Liberals Who Can’t Quit Lockdown
The Atlantic:
“The spring of 2021 is different from the spring of 2020…
Scientists know a lot more about how COVID-19 spreads—and how it doesn’t. Public-health advice is shifting. But some progressives have not updated their behavior based on the new information. And in their eagerness to protect themselves and others, they may be underestimating other costs.
“Being extra careful about COVID-19 is (mostly) harmless when it’s limited to wiping down your groceries with Lysol wipes and wearing a mask in places where you’re unlikely to spread the coronavirus, such as on a hiking trail. But vigilance can have unintended consequences when it imposes on other people’s lives. Even as scientific knowledge of COVID-19 has increased, some progressives have continued to embrace policies and behaviors that aren’t supported by evidence, such as banning access to playgrounds, closing beaches, and refusing to reopen schools for in-person learning.”
