Wow - just wow!

Georgia Conducting Secret 2020 Ballot Review -- Keeping Plaintiffs in the Dark
State officials also neglected to inform the judge hearing the lawsuit that they were conducting such an inspection, even though the judge had issued a protective order over the ballots in January. In a nine-page amicus brief recently filed in the case, attorneys for the office of Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger urged Superior Court Judge Brian Amero to deny petitioners’ requests to inspect the ballots, calling them a “fishing expedition.”
Frances Watson, chief investigator for the secretary of state’s office, confirmed in a statement to RCI that she sent investigators to Fulton County earlier this year to inspect the batches of sealed ballots. Poll monitors involved in last November’s hand recount had described the mail-in ballots in sworn affidavits as devoid of creases and folds and featuring identically bubbled-in marks for Biden. But the state said it could not find any ballots matching that description.
The watchdogs question why state officials did not disclose their activities to the court and fear they may have “tampered” with the sealed ballots, which are at the center of their lawsuit seeking access to all 147,000 absentee ballots cast during the 2020 election in Fulton County, which includes much of Atlanta.
“If the secretary of state’s office did that, they tampered with the ballots and violated Georgia state law,” which restricts the handling of ballots to authorized elections officials involved in the tabulation and care of the ballots, Favorito said. He also noted that Judge Amero had placed the ballots under a protective order in January. “They would have had to ask for a court order to unseal and inspect those ballots and they never did that.”

So basically the local Georgia officials continues to fight an independent third party audit of their ballots, filing lawsuits in court to prevent just that. At the same time, they ignore a Judge's order to leave all ballots untouched (and secured) and decide to unseal ballots to do their own non-independent audit that neither the Judge or the Plaintiffs were aware of.

Nothing suspicious or illegal about that? If anyone could come up with a legitimate reason to do this, I would love to hear it.

GOP Investigation Finds No Vote Fraud In Michigan<

THAT WAS A GOP GOP GOP GOP INVESTIGATION.
June 23, 2021 at 9:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 77 Comments
A months-long Republican investigation into Michigan’s 2020 election uncovered no evidence of widespread fraud and concluded Wednesday with a recommendation the attorney general investigate those who made false claims for “personal gain,” Bridge Michigan reports.

From the report:
“Our clear finding is that citizens should be confident the results represent the true results of the ballots cast by the people of Michigan.

"The committee strongly recommends citizens use a critical eye and ear toward those who have pushed demonstrably false theories for their own personal gain.”

And the way you ignore court case after court case and state official after state official (most Republicans) and a largely Trump appointed Supreme Court inisisting the election was not fraudulent.

Geographically, Republican America will reign from shore to shore, from Canada to Mexico. Its birth rate, its educational system’s products, its economic vigor, its social stability, its degree of happiness will reflect how fit today’s republicans are for self-government. We cannot foresee and should not speculate how their successes and failures might affect Woke America. We can be sure however that radical de-centralization at home can only reduce the matters with which U.S. foreign policy deals, and hence increase the likelihood that they be dealt with soberly.

Mac Stipanovich, a longtime Republican operative in Florida who is now retired, said the lies about the election provided a kind of cover for those unable to concede they were a shrinking minority in the population.

“In the past, party elders, party leaders … exploited the crazies in order to win elections and then largely ignored them after the elections,” he said. “What has happened since then is that Trump opened Pandora’s box and let them out. He not only let them out, he affirmed them and provoked them. And so now they’re running wild and they are legitimatizing these delusions.”

LaGRANGE, Ga. — Lonnie Hollis has been a member of the Troup County election board in West Georgia since 2013. A Democrat and one of two Black women on the board, she has advocated Sunday voting, helped voters on Election Days and pushed for a new precinct location at a Black church in a nearby town.

But this year, Ms. Hollis will be removed from the board, the result of a local election law signed by Gov. Brian Kemp, a Republican. Previously, election board members were selected by both political parties, county commissioners and the three biggest municipalities in Troup County. Now, the G.O.P.-controlled county commission has the sole authority to restructure the board and appoint all the new members.

“I speak out and I know the laws,” Ms. Hollis said in an interview. “The bottom line is they don’t like people that have some type of intelligence and know what they’re doing, because they know they can’t influence them.”

Ms. Hollis is not alone. Across Georgia, members of at least 10 county election boards have been removed, had their position eliminated or are likely to be kicked off through local ordinances or new laws passed by the state legislature. At least five are people of color and most are Democrats — though some are Republicans — and they will most likely all be replaced by Republicans.

Walton, born on Buffalo’s primarily Black East Side, became a full-time working mother at age 14 after dropping out of high school. She worked as a nurse in the Buffalo Public Schools and became involved in the local SEIU union before turning to community organizing work, founding an affordable housing group that rehabilitated vacant homes for low-income residents.

She ran on a left-wing agenda in one of the country’s most segregated cities, which also claims the nation’s third-worst child poverty rate. Walton promised a tenant’s bill of rights that includes rent control, along with a heavy investment in social services, and shifting police away from homelessness and mental health calls. She shied away from outright “Defund the police” rhetoric, telling a local news station she planned to relieve police “of the responsibility of fixing the problems that our municipal government should have been dealing with.”

Brown, Buffalo’s first Black mayor, was running for a record fifth term and was heavily favored to win. He did not agree to any debates with Walton during the primary; she instead held forums on Zoom with an empty chair for Brown. Firmly entrenched in the city’s political machine, he had the backing of other local Democratic politicians, powerful business interests, The Buffalo News and dozens of unions. Walton raised far less money than Brown, but she did have the endorsement of the powerful Buffalo Teachers Union and The Challenger, a newspaper aimed at Buffalo’s Black community.

Arizona’s ongoing audit of 2020 election results has been widely criticized, but a majority of voters nationwide approve of the election integrity effort.

A new national telephone and online survey by Rasmussen Reports finds that 55% of Likely U.S. Voters support forensic audits of election results to ensure there was no vote fraud. Twenty-nine percent (29%) oppose such audits and 17% are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The new survey also found that 41% of voters still don’t believe that Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election fairly.

David Becker is the Executive Director and Founder of The Center for Election Innovation & Research, which works with election officials and experts from around the country and across the aisle to improve the security, accessibility, and integrity of elections.

David is the CBS News Election Law Expert, contributing to the network’s coverage of Election 2020. His appearances in the media include The New York Times, The Washington Post, MSNBC, and NPR, and he has been published several times, including by the Stanford Social Innovation Review, the University of California, Berkeley, and The Hill.

Most of these news outlets have been reported as taking money from the Chinese Communist Party in the form of ‘educational’ junkets to Beijing, as well as other forms of payment.

This ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ has held himself out to be a neutral arbiter in building election technology across the country.

My experience in elections goes back about two decades, starting with a seven-year stint as a senior trial attorney with the Voting Section of the Department of Justice, working in both the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations. While there, I litigated and enforced federal voting laws including the Voting Rights Act, the National Voter Registration Act, the Help America Vote Act, and the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, read Becker’s testimony in front of the House Committee on Science, Space, & Technology in 2016.

The voting systems include paper ballots or electronic devices on which votes are cast, and include vote tabulation equipment, and with regard to those systems I can say that, while no system is 100 percent hack-proof, elections in this country are secure, perhaps as secure as they’ve ever been, and that voters should have confidence that their votes will be counted and counted accurately.

Third, unlike voter registration databases or email systems, I know of no jurisdiction where voting
machines are connected to the internet.

This is a complete falsehood. Information is being released daily that shows that machines were accessed by the internet during the election, counterfeit ballots were injected into the system in multiple battleground states, and outright illegal behavior by Democrat and Establishment GOP officials during the 2020 election, all led to an illegitimate President* Biden in The White House.

Becker’s career is completely embedded in the ‘progressive’ side of the aisle.

Of course, Becker recently went public on his ‘surprise’ that Georgians are demanding a full forensic election audit.

'Horrendous': Ga. audit lawyer demands full investigation into Fulton County's ballot irregularities

Attorney warns that county could be "undermining the will of the people."

...

Cheeley is among the investigators approved by a Georgia court to audit the 2020 absentee ballots of Fulton County, Ga., a county critical to Joe Biden's historic 2020 win of Georgia that helped propel him to the White House.

...

Cheeley called attention to what appeared to be instances of double-counting and double-scanning of ballots within Fulton's data, something he said "violates the basic principle of our democracy" and "smacks at the very heart of our democracy by undermining the will of the people."

He also pointed to extensive notes by an election monitor hand-picked by Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger; those notes revealed the inspector's belief that "massive" election issues were playing out in Fulton County before and during the 2020 election, including double counting and serious chain-of-custody and security issues surrounding absentee ballots.

Georgia state officials "did nothing about it," Cheeley said. "So that should have raised a red flag, in my opinion, that they should have more closely scrutinized."

Asked about his degree of confidence in Fulton's election management, Cheeley called the county's performance "horrendous."

Brazenly parroting Democrat talking points about “voting rights,” citing far-left groups data on “voting restrictions” without even noting it came from far-left groups.
---
This is actual Democrat propaganda from the @CBSNews broadcast.

it’s NOT a Federal voting rights law
the “400 bills” comes from a far-left think tank that counts “security guards at polling places” as “restricting voting”
No mention of why R’s unanimously voted no.

---
Similarly,
@ABC
made absolutely no mention of why R’s opposed, even though nearly every single Republican Senator has spoken on the floor this week SPECIFICALLY about why the bill was unconstitutional and unacceptable.

Instead we just get the bullets Democrats put out
---
And maybe this is inside baseball to viewers, but Congressional correspondents LIVE on the Hill and should get this.

Manchin isn’t on board with “the bill,” his changes were not adopted into anything except a handshake from Schumer, and Abrams and Obama don’t make that a deal.

The son of former President Donald Trump, Eric Trump, said Tuesday on Newsmax TV that because of President Joe Biden and other Democrat missteps, Republicans are poised to “win it again” in 2022 and 2024.

“There's a lot of people that are missing Trump, and I think every single day that Biden messes up our nation, I think it further incentivizes my father, and frankly, our entire family to do it again,” Trump Organization Executive Vice President Eric Trump said during  “Greg Kelly Reports.” “I think 2022 is going to be an absolute bloodbath for the Democrats. I think we're absolutely going to do incredibly well, and I think 2024 is going to surprise everybody.”

Eric Trump pointed to the inflation of prices for fuel and commodities and the hacking of major U.S. systems by foreign actors.

“You see what's happening at commodity prices. You see what is happening with inflation around the world. You see what's happening with Putin literally hacking our country, the lack of respect,” Eric Trump said. “You see what's happening with the mess that's the southern border. Millions of people coming over the southern border, crime is spiking all throughout the country, and I could go on and on.”

He said his father was “incredibly effective,” and gave the country its best economy and unemployment situation in decades.

“A lot of people want (President Trump) back, there's half this country right now that feels like they don't have a spokesperson,” Eric Trump said. “They have no voice. You've got another major amount of the country who thinks that they made a terrible mistake electing this guy (Biden).”

He said Biden and the Democrats were “making it easy” for Republicans and conservatives to return to power in the mid-terms and the next presidential election cycle.

“This guy (Biden) is making it easy with his incompetence, and we're going to walk through that door. I'm telling you; we're going to going to walk through that door,” he said.

Supreme Court rules California farms can keep union organizers off private land

Cesar Chavez speaks in 1971 in Los Angeles.

(Los Angeles Times)

By DAVID G. SAVAGESTAFF WRITER

JUNE 23, 2021 UPDATED 11:09 AM PT

FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmail

WASHINGTON —

The Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down part of a historic California law inspired by Cesar Chavez and the farm workers union, ruling that agricultural landowners and food processors have a right to keep union organizers off their property.

The justices by a 6-3 vote said the state’s “right of access” rule violates property rights protected by the Constitution, which states private property shall not be “taken for public use without just compensation.”

Writing for the court, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. said “the access regulation is not germane to any benefit provided to agricultural employers or any risk posed to the public...The access regulation grants labor organizations a right to invade the growers’ property. It therefore constitutes a per se physical taking,” he wrote in Cedar Point Nursery vs. Hassid."

Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, responded to criticism from Republican lawmakers Wednesday that members of the military are taught critical race theory, the academic concept that racism is a systemic, social construct.

In recent months, critical race theory has come under fire from conservatives who believe it should not be taught in public schools.

Testifying before the House Armed Services Committee, Milley, the nation’s highest-ranking military officer, said there was nothing wrong with learning from history.

"I do think it's important, actually, for those of us in uniform to be open-minded and be widely read," Milley said. "And it is important that we train and we understand.

"I want to understand white rage, and I'm white," he continued in reference to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump. "And I want to understand it.

"I've read Karl Marx. I've read Lenin. That doesn't make me a communist," he added. "What is wrong with understanding, having some situational understanding about the country for which we are here to defend? And I personally find it offensive that we are accusing the United States military, our general officers, our commissioned, our noncommissioned officers, of being 'woke.'"

Milley had been given time by Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., a former Air Force officer, to respond to comments from Reps. Matt Gaetz and Michael Waltz, both Republicans from Florida, who had raised the issue of critical race theory being taught at military service academies, including West Point, earlier in the hearing.

As Milley spoke, Gaetz the pedophile, shook his head in disapproval.

The truthers will call a four star General a communist terrorist threat.

Army Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, admonished lawmakers over questions about critical race theory at a Wednesday hearing, saying it is important for leaders to be well-versed in many schools of thought.
“I’ve read Mao Zedong. I’ve read Karl Marx. I’ve read Lenin. That doesn’t make me a communist,” Milley told the House Armed Services Committee. “So what is wrong with understanding … the country which we are here to defend?”

Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) criticized reports that the U.S. Military Academy at West Point teaches a course involving the theory, which broadly explores the idea that racism reaches beyond individual prejudice and affects minorities at the institutional level, particularly in criminal justice.

A guest lecturer at the academy included phrases such as “White rage,” Waltz claimed, and he pressed Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, the nation’s first Black Pentagon chief, to investigate further.
Soon after, when the committee gave Milley a chance to expand, he launched into an impassioned defense of inquiry about U.S. society and its racial dynamics. He emphasized that the U.S. Military Academy is a university.

“I want to understand White rage. And I’m White,” Milley said, focused on learning more about the mostly White, mostly male mob that stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6.
“What is it that caused thousands of people to assault this building and try to overturn the Constitution of the United States of America. What caused that?” Milley asked. “I want to find that out.”

He wants to find out who inspired the worst assault on the United States in history.

I'm as white as possible. I stand for him and again Antifa because my parents were "Antifa" members of the greatest generation in history.

Delta Variant Is a Grave Danger to the Unvaccinated
June 23, 2021 at 3:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 207 Comments
New Yorker:
“To a significant degree, the emergence of a variant like Delta was predictable, and, with rapid and widespread immunization, the threat that it poses can be subdued. But its arrival is still incredibly consequential. Delta drives an even wider wedge between vaccinated and unvaccinated people. They have already been living in separate worlds, facing vastly different risks of illness and death; now, their risk levels will diverge further.

“People who’ve been fully vaccinated can, by and large, feel confident in the immunity that they’ve received. But those who remain susceptible should understand that, for them, this is probably the most dangerous moment of the pandemic.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Huh.

Some righties are mad at him this afternoon for opining on the topic, which is beyond his purview of national defense, but Gaetz brought it up. So did Rep. Mike Waltz, a veteran himself, who claimed back in April that cadets at West Point had been given a lecture =entitled “Understanding Whiteness and White Rage.” That explains Milley’s use of the term in the clip, I take it — Waltz had mentioned it during questioning and so Milley was addressing his point.

But it sure is interesting that Milley would tie “white rage” to the January 6 insurrection, which I assume Waltz didn’t do. “This general thinks that studying CRT will help him understand 1/6. That’s a revealing remark,” tweeted Andrew Sullivan. It is.
It’s also revealing how Milley pivots from CRT to a brief tour through American history, from slavery to the Civil War to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. “What is wrong with understanding, having some situational understanding about the country for which we are here to defend?” he asks. A core point made by opponents of Critical Race Theory, though, is that it’s not essential to understanding U.S. history. If anything, it distorts history by reducing it to a series of power struggles between racial blocs. You can teach slavery and the civil-rights movement, they insist, without bundling CRT’s dogma about “whiteness” and structural racism into it.

The upshot of Milley’s answer is that, well, maybe you can’t. Not to adults, anyway. If you want to understand an important perspective on American history maybe you should read CRT, even if you end up agreeing with it no more than you agree with Marx. Which is fine, but as Ben Shapiro says, Marx isn’t on the military’s recommended reading list. (I think.) Kendi is. How come?

The right wing media is going crazy.

How can they declare a The Chief of Staff a communist hoaxer!

The Military Times article.

Earlier, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin smacked down Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., after he asserted that an Austin advisor is a “critical race theorist,” and that his sources told him Austin’s efforts to educate the force on extremism were sowing more division than unity.

And then Rep. Mike Waltz, R-Fla., a National Guard colonel and Green Beret, went off about the discussion of critical race theory at West Point, in an academic setting. He said cadets had recently attended a voluntary talk on “white rage.”

In response, Army Gen. Mark Milley delivered a monologue, colored by his meticulous enthusiasm for U.S. history, that will no doubt be etched in his legacy.

Here it is in full:

“A lot of us have to get much smarter on whatever the theory is, but I do think it’s important, actually, for those of us in uniform to be open-minded and be widely read.

The United States Military Academy is a university. And it is important that we train, and we understand ― and I want to understand white rage. And I’m white, and I want to understand it.

Get the military's most comprehensive news and information every morning

So, what is it that caused thousands of people to assault this building, and try to overturn the Constitution of the United States of America? What caused that? I want to find that out.

I want to maintain an open mind here, and I do want to analyze it. It’s important that we understand that because our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and guardians, they come from the American people. So it is important that the leaders, now and in the future, understand it.

SECDEF wants you to know that supporting Donald Trump isn’t extremism

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin couldn't define extremism, but he clarified that supporting Trump isn't it.

Meghann Myers

I’ve read Mao Zedong. I’ve read ― I’ve read Karl Marx. I’ve read Lenin ― that doesn’t make me a communist.

So what is wrong with understanding, having some situational understanding about the country for which we are here to defend? And I personally find it offensive that we are accusing the United States military, general officers, commissioned and noncommissioned officers of being quote ‘woke,’ or something else because we’re studying some theories that are out there.

That was started at Harvard Law School, years ago. And it proposed that there were laws in the United States, antebellum laws prior to the Civil War, that led to a power differential with African-Americans, that were three-quarters of a human being, when this country was formed.

And then we had a Civil War and Emancipation Proclamation to change it. And we brought it up to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and it took another hundred years [of segregation] to change that. So look, I do want to know, and I respect your service ― and you and I are both Green Berets ― but I want to know.

And it matters to our military and the discipline, the cohesion of this military, and I thank you for the opportunity to make a comment on that.”

Scott the highest ranking military officer disagreed with you.

That’s because in a healthy political environment, parties advocating unpopular policies that somehow get elected pay significant political consequences if they try to enact them.”

“In the United States though, the filibuster has made it so that far-right politicians can get elected and stay in office for decades because their unpopular policies are never passed. As a result, instead of learning that voters don’t support their ideas and being forced to move toward the center, Republican voters have become increasingly radicalized by the fact that their legislators fail to make the conservative paradise of their dreams a reality.”

"A U.S. Sentencing Commission report on recidivism among federal prisoners, released on January 24, 2019, showed that nearly 64% of prisoners who had been convicted of violent offenses were arrested within eight years compared with about 40% of those convicted of nonviolent offenses. The governor of Florida wants the colleges teach Fox news University Philosophy.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed legislation requiring state colleges and universities to annually survey their students, faculty and staff about their beliefs to ensure "viewpoint diversity and intellectual freedom."

Why it matters: The legislation doesn't specify for what the survey results will be used, but at a press conference on Tuesday DeSantis said that schools found to be "indoctrinating" students aren't "worth tax dollars" and are "not something we’re going to be supporting going forward."

The big picture: The survey will assess the "extent to which competing ideas and perspectives are presented" and determine whether students, faculty and staff "feel free to express their beliefs and viewpoints on campus and in the classroom," per the legislation.

What they're saying: DeSantis said Tuesday the bills would prevent state schools from becoming “hotbeds for stale ideology."

He added it is now the "norm" for schools to be "intellectually repressive environments" that promote "orthodoxies," though he didn't specify which orthodoxies were being promoted or which schools have this problem, per the Tampa Bay Times.

What's next: The law goes into effect on July 1. The survey will be conducted annually with reports published each September, starting Sept. 1, 2022.

I can't forgive the people who won't admit my partner, Brian Sicknick, was a hero
Opinion by Sandra Garza
Jun 23, 2021
Editor's Note: Sandra Garza is a licensed clinical social worker and was the long-time partner of Brian Sicknick, the Capitol Police Officer who protected the US Capitol from pro-Trump rioters during the Jan. 6 insurrection and later died. The opinions expressed in this commentary are those of the author.

(CNN) - In late 2008, while on a popular dating site, I received a message in my inbox from a good-looking, dark-haired man with gorgeous blue eyes saying, "Hi, how are you?" I responded, and before I knew it, we were chatting regularly for weeks. He told me that he used to be in the Air National Guard, was originally from New Jersey, and was nearing the end of his training to be a US Capitol Police Officer. It was Brian D. Sicknick.
When we finally were ready to meet for our first date, he made an odd request. Meet for breakfast? I came to learn that breakfast was his favorite meal of the day, particularly blueberry pancakes. Brian was very quiet, shy almost, and had an innocence about him that was incredibly endearing. We bonded over our love of animals, our military experience, and our passion for helping others -- he as an officer, me as a clinical social worker.
Soon, we moved in together — for 11 years, through the good, the bad and the ugly, the belly laughs, birthdays, Thanksgivings, Christmases, road trips, vacations, heartbreaking losses and moves to new homes. Last July we took a break from our relationship to figure out our futures. He kept our dachshunds; I babysat them when he worked late. We remained incredibly close.

On the morning of January 6, 2021, Brian reminded me that I needed to stay overnight to be with the dachshunds because there were pro-Trump protests happening over the outcome of the election. He said he would not be coming home until late the following day.
I was busy at work, so I didn't follow the news that day. Then Brian's mother, Gladys, called me — frantic — asking me to get in touch with him. "There is something going on at the Capitol," she said. I assumed it was nothing serious; over our 11 years, it was not uncommon for something to be going on at his job — and Brian was always OK. I reached out and asked him to contact his mother. He did and I went back to my work.

Later that evening, the call came: the worst phone call of my life. It was from a US Capitol Police Officer who told me that Brian was in the hospital. I couldn't comprehend what I was hearing. He said he would send an officer to my house. As I waited on pins and needles, I was finally met by a Virginia state trooper who could give me no information about what had happened to Brian. She escorted me to the hospital.

When I arrived at the ER, there was no one there to greet me. I told a woman behind a desk why I was there. She asked me to sign in and sit down. I explained the severity of the situation, trying my best to remain calm. Thankfully, the kindness of the state trooper helped ground me in a very agonizing, frustrating moment.

Eventually, I was greeted by the ER physician who told me the terrible news that Brian was on a ventilator and I could not see him because of Covid restrictions. I notified Brian's mother, who immediately drove with her sister to the hospital. They also were not allowed to see Brian. The rest of his family soon arrived. Brian died the next day.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

In the days after his death, I was further shocked and saddened to learn Capitol Police Officer Howard Liebengood and DC Police Officer Jeffrey Smith had died by suicide.

Devastated over the loss of Brian and drowning in grief, I took two months off from work. There were times I didn't want to get up in the morning, didn't want to face my life without Brian in it. I also did not watch any of the January 6 footage because I had heard so many terrible things about it and didn't think I could psychologically handle it.

But before his memorial a month later, something came over me: I wanted to see everything I could and understand what happened that day. As I watched the videos, I couldn't believe my eyes. I saw officers being brutalized and beaten, and protesters defying orders to stay back from entering the Capitol. All the while, I kept thinking, "Where is the President? Why is it taking so long for the National Guard to arrive? Where is the cavalry!?"
As the months passed, my deep sadness turned to outright rage as I watched Republican members of Congress lie on TV and in remarks to reporters and constituents about what happened that day. Over and over they denied the monstrous acts committed by violent protesters.
I was further angered when Officer Billy Evans was killed in early April at the Capitol, rammed by a driver at the North barricade of the Capitol Complex. The assailant, who was killed by police, reportedly struggled with mental health issues and was not apparently part of the January 6 riot, though he held strong political ideologies, his family said. But it felt very much to me that the attack and Officer Evans' death was directly related to the events of January 6, that people were newly emboldened to vent their life frustrations with the government by attacking innocent officers who diligently protect the Capitol daily. Still, I kept largely silent out of respect for Officer Evans' family.

When I learned of the proposal to create a January 6 commission to investigate the attack, and understood the importance of what this bill would accomplish, I finally felt compelled to speak out, along with Gladys, to encourage the Republican Senators to vote yes.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

I knew it would not be comfortable or easy being in the public eye, but my desire for justice outweighed any discomfort I felt. As we went door to door to their offices several weeks ago ahead of the vote, some Republican senators were very pleasant and polite. Others were dismissive, and others could barely hide their disdain.

Since those meetings, only a handful of Republican senators showed that they possessed the moral compass to do the right thing by voting yes, putting America first, and showing warmth and compassion for the officers (as well as their families) who protect them daily.

By denying or downplaying the viciousness and trauma that occurred on January 6, members of Congress and the people who continue echoing their false narrative are engaging in a specific kind of psychological harm that is familiar to people who work in mental health. It's known as "secondary wounding." Secondary wounding, described by psychologist Aphrodite Matsakis, occurs when people "minimize or discount the magnitude of the event, its meaning to the victim, [or] its impact on the victim's life."

Make no mistake: All of the officers and people who were physically harmed, terrified, psychologically destabilized or lost loved ones due to that day are literally being re-traumatized every time someone speaks untrue words to describe what happened on January 6.

For those lawmakers who voted no, I will continue to speak out to remind them and those Americans who support them, of the horrors of that day and the trauma that continues in the minds of those that suffered in the battle in the very seat of American democracy. This not only includes the officers, but fellow senators and congressmen and women, as well as the innocent employees who were in the Capitol that day who were terrified and wondered if they, too, would make it home that day.
Brian was a proud American and loved his country. He continued his service long after his time in the military by becoming a US Capitol Police Officer, serving the American people and members of Congress -- and protecting democracy.

To know that some members of Congress — along with the former President, Donald Trump, who Brian and I once supported but who can only now be viewed as the mastermind of that horrible attack — are not acknowledging Brian's heroism that day is unforgivable and un-American.

Trump is a traitor.

He is the Benedict Arnold of the 2st century.

"A reporter asked Biden what he feels would be the “most effective thing that government can do to change the mindset of those who feel compelled to pull the triggers” of guns.

Biden said in response to the question that one could hope to change the mindset of people by “being engaged in a whole range of programs.”

He continued to say that involves “everything from mental health programs” to start engaging with people earlier on and “letting them know there’s other options.”

We need to be “making sure that when a child is young, they have access to real education, they get started off on the right foot,” Biden continued.

In addition, he said when someone gets out of prison, someone should be “making sure” they are not going to be “denied public housing” and therefore, “don’t have to go back under the bridge where they were living before, that they are able to get help for healthcare, et cetera.”

Most importantly Biden said we ought to be “Re-engaging them in the neighborhood, giving them some hope, some opportunity.”

He also said that while you ree people back “in the neighborhood” after they are released from prison, you also need to be “making sure that those folks who are taking advantage of them .

Are Twitter trolls mentally ill?

A disproportionate amount of bad online behaviour stems from psychological issues.

Tom Chivers is UnHerd's Science Editor. His second book, How to Read Numbers, is out now.

June 23, 2021

There’s a thing in the ethics of psychology called the Goldwater Rule. It states, in essence, that mental health professionals should not diagnose people from afar. It arose in the 1964 US presidential election, after the magazine Fact published an article quoting various psychiatrists saying that Barry Goldwater, the Republican candidate, was “psychologically unfit” to be president.

Reasonably and inevitably enough, Goldwater then sued the heck out of Fact. The American Psychiatric Association then made it a principle of their code of ethics that “it is unethical for a psychiatrist to offer a professional opinion unless he or she has conducted an examination and has been granted proper authorisation for such a statement”. In the UK, the Royal College of Psychiatrists “strongly supports” the rule.

I’m not a mental health professional. Nonetheless I think it’s a broadly useful principle to live by, especially if — as I do — you write a lot about mental health. Suggesting that some political opponent or other is mentally ill is often easier than wondering why a sane person in command of their faculties might believe something you disagree with.

But there’s an opposite mistake to the one the Goldwater Rule guards against: acting as though mental health issues have no relevance to our political and cultural lives.

Last week, the novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie published a blog post called “It Is Obscene”. It referred to her experiences since she did an interview with Channel 4, in which she said that “trans women are trans women” — that is, she did not say that she thought that trans women are women, without caveats, although she has been a longtime campaigner on LGBT issues. Two young writers who she knew personally, she said, had accused her publicly of transphobia. One had called for people to “pick up machetes” to defend trans people from the “harm” she caused.

From the "BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPAAAAAAA!!!11!" files:

Federal prosecutors told a federal judge Tuesday that they intend to drop a Capitol riot case against a New York man accused of having been inside the Capitol during the siege in January.

It is the first of the nearly 500 Capitol riot cases to collapse for lack of evidence.

The man, Christopher Kelly of New York City, was arrested Jan. 20 after the FBI said a paid confidential informant told agents that Kelly was posting material on a Facebook Messenger app about the riot and his plans to be in Washington on Jan. 6. The informant said a photo taken inside the Capitol was also posted, according to the FBI.

In the charging documents filed in court, an FBI agent said, "I believe the messages and image ... reflect that Chris Kelly was using this account to inform associates that he had breached the Capitol and was inside."

The court document accompanying the charges included photos that the FBI said showed Kelly on the Capitol grounds, but they did not include any further indication that he entered the building.

Other riot cases have included data from cellphone service providers indicating that defendants' phones were inside the building. This case did not. Nor did it include any photos of Kelly himself inside the Capitol or offer any direct proof that he was among the rioters.

In seeking to drop the case Tuesday, a prosecutor wrote that, "upon reflection of the facts currently known to the government, the government believes dismissal ... serves the interest of justice." The motion to dismiss said the government and defense counsel "have discussed the merits of the case."

Public Enemy Numero Uno, AKA: The Granny who almost took down the entire US Government...

A grandmother from Indiana who participated in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, was sentenced Wednesday to three years of probation for her involvement in the riot, ABC News reports.

Why it matters: Anna Morgan-Lloyd — a 49-year-old hair salon owner who pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building — is the first person to be sentenced in the attack.

She was ordered to complete 40 hours of community service and pay $500 in restitution.

Report: Members of Saudi Hit Squad that Killed Khashoggi Were Trained in U.S.

Four members of the Saudi hit squad that killed US-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018 had received paramilitary training in the United States that had been approved by the State Department, the New York Times reported late Tuesday.

Khashoggi, a Saudi-born US resident who wrote for the Washington Post, was an outspoken critic of the Saudi leadership, with which he had once been close. He was murdered on October 2, 2018 in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul by a team of agents sent from Saudi Arabia.

Four of those operatives, the New York Times said, had received training from a private American security group, Tier 1 Group, a move first authorized by the administration of former president Barack Obama in 2014.

That training continued at least until the start of Donald Trump's presidency, the newspaper said.

It cited a document provided to the Trump administration by a top official from the parent company of Tier 1 Group, the private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, who had applied for a senior post at the Pentagon.

In his written testimony, Louis Bremer confirmed that Tier 1 Group did provide training to the Saudi agents, but insisted that the training was "protective in nature" and "unrelated to their subsequent heinous acts."

Bremer said that the four members of the kill team received the training in 2017, and that two of them had already participated in a previous course from October 2014 to January 2015.

The US State Department, contacted by AFP, said it could not comment on this information but called for the "responsible use...of American military equipment and training".

According to a US report released in February, seven members of an elite unit tasked with protecting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman were part of the hit squad that killed Khashoggi.

The New York Times did not specify whether the four operatives trained in the United States belonged to this unit.

The body of the dissident journalist, dismembered on the spot, has never been found. After denying the assassination, Riyadh claimed the murder had been carried by Saudi agents who acted alone.

After an opaque trial in Saudi Arabia, five Saudis were sentenced to death and three sentenced to prison terms. The death sentences have since been commuted.

“Well, we’ll be damned. Joe Biden appears to have all but secured that elusive bipartisan infrastructure deal that both parties have been prattling on about for years. The core group of 10 Senate centrists working on the proposal emerged from a meeting with White House officials Wednesday night and declared that they had a working framework.”

“While lawmakers draft up the text, expect the White House to start leaning on Democrats to get in line. We know that so far at least 11 Senate Republicans have agreed to back this plan, but just as many Democrats have expressed reservations, creating tricky math for leadership.”

Saudi Operatives Received Paramilitary Training in U.S.
June 22, 2021 at 10:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 61 Comments

“Four Saudis who participated in the 2018 killing of the Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi received paramilitary training in the United States the previous year under a contract approved by the State Department,” the New York Times reports.

Worker filings for jobless benefits last week held nearly steady at 411,000, stalling at a level reached in recent weeks as the labor market gradually recovers.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that initial unemployment claims, a proxy for layoffs, moved lower last week to 411,000 from an upwardly revised 418,000 the prior week, when claims rose. The four-week-average, which smooths out volatility in the weekly figures, rose slightly off a pandemic low to 396,250.

That uptick was a departure from the recent trend, as claims had fallen for six straight weeks prior to the most recent increase. Claims are down sharply from the depths of the Covid-19-induced downturn during 2020, and are hovering at levels half of what they were in January this year. Weekly claims totals are down more than 40% from the 742,000 total posted the week ended April 3.

While last week’s initial claims were higher than projected and claims overall remain higher than pre-pandemic levels, their downward trajectory, along with a pickup in hiring, a declining unemployment rate and optimistic consumer sentiment, points to gains for the U.S. labor market.

“The overall trend is in the right direction,” said Jordan van Rijn, senior economist at the Credit Union National Association. “Right now, there’s a lot of demand for labor out there and it’s the workers that are a little more in the driver’s seat,” he added.

Employers are reporting increased demand for workers as U.S. Covid-19 cases have declined and more people have received vaccinations. State and local governments have phased out restrictions on business, and Americans have increased activities such as traveling and dining out.

Separate data released Thursday by the Commerce Department also pointed to a strengthening economic recovery. Orders for long-lasting manufactured goods rose 2.3% last month. The department also released updated calculations of U.S. gross domestic product—a broad measure of the economy’s output of goods and services. The update said GDP rose at an annual rate of 6.4% in the first quarter, matching previous estimates.

The pace of jobs growth has lagged behind the broader economic bounceback, which many economists have attributed to a variety of factors that they expect will ease over the summer and into the fall.

Those factors include lingering health and child-care concerns. Republican-controlled states also are withdrawing from federal pandemic programs meant to enhance state unemployment benefits.

Congressional Democrats, searching for any way forward on legislation to protect voting rights, find themselves softening their once-firm opposition to a form of restriction on the franchise that they had long warned would be Exhibit A for voter suppression: voter identification laws.

Any path to passing the far-reaching Democratic elections legislation that Republicans blocked with a filibuster on Tuesday will almost certainly have to include a compromise on the bill’s near-blanket ban on state laws that require voters to present photo identification before they can cast a ballot.

Such laws were first cropping up decades ago, and Democrats fought them tooth and nail, insisting that they would be an impossible barrier to scale for the nation’s most vulnerable voters, especially older people and people of color.

But in recent years, as the concept of voter identification has become broadly popular. The idea that voters bring some form of ID to the polls has been accepted by Democrats ranging from Senator Joe Manchin III of West Virginia on the center-right to Stacey Abrams of Georgia, a hero of the left.

“As I have always said, a person should have to confirm that they are who they are in order to vote,” Senator Raphael Warnock, a Democrat from Georgia and a key ally of Ms. Abrams, said in an interview. “What I get concerned about is when you say gun licenses are OK, when a student ID is not. Then I think any reasonable person has to ask, ‘Well, what’s that game?’”

Compared with newer state laws that restrict early voting and mail-in voting, limit ballot drop boxes and allow partisan elected officials to take on a greater role overseeing elections, voter identification suddenly seems like an expendable bargaining chip for some Democrats.

“I have been fighting voter ID since 1990 when I was in the State Legislature,” said Representative Gwen Moore, a Black Democrat from Wisconsin, where Republicans adopted an ID law a decade ago that Democrats said would devastate universal access to the ballot box.

“I don’t know that it’s less important,” Ms. Moore said, “but given the gravity of all the other things that they want to do, like shutting down polling sites, in the hierarchy of needs, I really believe we give them their old No. 1 thing.”

The right wing media turned the Republicans into herd of sheep.

Media coverage creates the incentive for GOP politicians to take action.

Republican politicians are increasingly indistinguishable from right-wing media personalities, latching on to whatever culture war outrage is currently roiling the GOP base rather than trying to grapple with actual societal problems. As Fox and its ilk made “critical race theory” that subject, GOP candidates and officeholders responded to the incentive the coverage created.

Virginia’s Republican gubernatorial nominee put opposition to “critical race theory” at the center of his campaign, presaging a GOP effort to use it as a core part of its political strategy in the 2022 midterm elections. Meanwhile, at least 25 states have reportedly introduced or passed legislation banning “critical race theory” in public schools or taken other steps to supposedly curtail its spread. Florida and Texas, whose governors are potential GOP presidential candidates, are among the states that enacted such bans.

For the right-wing movement, this is a virtuous cycle. The political action provides more news hooks for right-wing media outlets to cover; creates victories for advocacy groups to claim and rally around; and adopts the framework and echoes the text of model legislation crafted and promoted by the think tanks. That in turn creates incentives for more think tank work, more advocacy, more media coverage, and more political action. And every step creates more of a frenzy among the right-wing base, which shows up everywhere from enraged social media engagement to public meeting uproars.

The current right-wing target is “critical race theory.” But this strategy is plug-and-play and could be used on a host of issues -- the tea party movement of 2009, the opposition to health care reform in 2010, and the anti-social distancing movement of 2020, to take three examples, bear some striking similarities. And the increasingly nationalized character of U.S. politics, the collapse of local newsrooms, and Fox’s outsized influence over the Republican Party and its base have all made it more potent.
