After the weekend, Biden bizarrely walked it back. “My hope is that Facebook, instead of taking it personally that somehow I’m saying ‘Facebook is killing people,’ that they would do something about the misinformation,” Biden said. That’s literally what he said—and journalists didn’t seem to find it was even impolite to Facebook.
On July 13, the president unleashed a hyperbolic speech in Philadelphia on voting integrity bills. He accused Republicans of “an assault on democracy, an assault on liberty, an assault on who we are—who we are as Americans. … This is election subversion. It’s the most dangerous threat to voting and the integrity of free and fair elections in our history.”
He mangled history: “We are facing the most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War. That’s not hyperbole.” And he said, “The 21st-century Jim Crow assault is real. It’s unrelenting, and we’re going to challenge it vigorously.”
So, Biden can suggest today’s Republicans are just like Southern Democrats who enforced a rigid regime of racial segregation and mob lynchings. In other venues, Biden has poisonously claimed the Republicans made “Jim Crow look like Jim Eagle” and represent “Jim Crow on steroids.”
This latest mean-spirited, mudslinging speech was hailed by the network anchors.
David Muir on ABC touted the president “blasting what he calls attacks on voting rights.” Norah O’Donnell on CBS proclaimed Biden was “speaking out forcefully.” On NBC, Lester Holt announced, “In some of his strongest language yet, President Biden today blasting Republican efforts to restrict voting access as un-American and a test of our democracy.”
The front page of The New York Times the next day carried the headline “Biden Portrays a Right to Vote as Under Siege.” The “Jim Crow” junk was quoted in the very last paragraph.
Five days later, ABC “This Week” moderator Martha Raddatz was still praising this attack as “a very impassioned speech to defend voting rights,” and AP Washington bureau chief Julie Pace added, “Rhetorically, Biden is saying all of the right things that Democrats want to hear.” But both admitted the Democrat push for their For the People Act is dead in the water.
Enough time has elapsed to evaluate how the fact-checkers performed on this wild “Jim Crow assault” talk. Did AP Fact Check have it? No. CNN Facts First team? No. The Washington Post Fact Checker? No. FactCheck.org? No. Snopes? No. PolitiFact? No.
Amazingly, PolitiFact did check one statement in this speech: Biden proclaiming, “In 2020, more people voted in America than ever in the history of America.” It awarded him a “Mostly True” rating for that.
This is an ongoing pattern. The so-called independent fact-checkers have given Biden a free pass to smear Republicans with a “Jim Crow” brush. It’s fair for Biden to accuse them of the worst attack on voting rights since the Civil War. He isn’t checked by journalists. He’s praised for “speaking out forcefully.”

WASHINGTON — The Biden administration is accelerating investments in Covid-19 testing to combat a fourth wave of infections washing over states and regions with low vaccination rates as those rates stall and some people resist a return to mask mandates, three administration officials said.
The administration will announce Thursday that it is directing $1.6 billion in Covid testing to high-risk settings like prisons and homeless and domestic violence shelters, the officials said. The administration announced a $398 million boost in funding for small rural hospitals last week for testing and reducing infection.
Many Americans are eager to declare an end to the pandemic, spurning masks and vaccinations in some states and regional pockets, but public health experts and federal officials say the country is entering a period much like the beginning of the pandemic, when large-scale testing and tracing are critical.
Testing "is a key pillar of our response," particularly because some people are holding off on getting vaccinated and many children are ineligible, said Carole Johnson, the White House testing coordinator. "It's going to be really important, including as we talk to states about their surge teams."
Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., chair of the Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee, said Tuesday at a hearing, "Vaccination rates are plateauing, and fatigue is setting in."
Hospitalizations are up by 35 percent and deaths are up by 26 percent over the last week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, even as testing is decreasing. Public health laboratories reported that 86,000 tests were administered in the last week of June, the most recent data available, compared to as many as 205,000 a week during the last wave of Covid, in April. In January, before vaccines were widely available, weekly tests reached 523,000, according to the Association of Public Health Laboratories. That does not include commercial and clinical labs, and Johnson said testing is increasing in surge states.
Scott Becker, chief executive of the laboratories group, said: "It's a ground war. With the number of cases and hospitalizations going up, you'd expect to see a greater degree of testing." But "we've seen a huge downturn in diagnostic testing across the country."
The Biden administration is also using billions of dollars approved by Congress to establish regional hubs to manage testing programs in schools and homeless shelters, and it sent $1.7 billion to states to assist in sequencing the evolving virus.

MIAMI - President Joe Biden on Thursday plans to slap targeted individual sanctions on Cuba regime officials, bucking the progressive voices in his own party who called for an end to the embargo.
Biden's response to Cuba - which also includes measures to bring increased internet access to the island and calls for more international pressure on the totalitarian government - was outlined Wednesday night in a call with Democratic Cuban-American activists in Miami who had been calling for more action ever since the July 11 uprisings on the island.
But it's the proposal to extend the targeted sanctions of the Magnitsky Act, originally passed in response to Russian government oppression and then extended to governments such as Venezuela, that has most encouraged activists who want more pressure on Cuba.
"This is huge," said Sasha Tirador, a top Miami political operative who was briefed on the plans Wednesday night.
"No administration has ever announced that they will hold each individual who violates human rights on the island of Cuba accountable," she said.
Tirador and others on the call had been initially frustrated that Biden didn't immediately react with a response plan for Cuba after the uprisings as Cuban-American Republicans such as Sen. Marco Rubio, also a Miami resident, began questioning the administration's resolve.

The three states you mentioned (which are basically just the top three "red" states") did not even have 30% of the US cases, much less 40% of the US cases, much less 40% of the cases "worldwide" as you suggested.
You failed to mention that your own state had 6521 new cases and blue state (Dem Gov) Louisiana had 5388 - placing them number two and number three in total new cases. Two blue states that had more cases than Texas and Missouri (the states you are chastising).
