Maybe he needs another town hall on CNN?

Biden Approval Drops to 50%, Lowest for Him to Date
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Joe Biden's latest job approval rating of 50% is down from 56% in June. Before this month, his ratings had not shown meaningful variation during his time in office, and the current figure marks the lowest measured for him to date.
Biden's approval ratings are marked by extreme party polarization, which has become the norm for presidential approval in recent years. Currently, 90% of Democrats, 12% of Republicans and 48% of independents approve of the job Biden is doing. His ratings among Democrats and independents are the lowest to date among those groups. The new poll marks the first time he has less-than majority approval among independents.

Let's be clear here folks. The fact that 90% of Democrats approve of this walking piece of vegetable is proof positive that his approvals will never dip too far. If, by now, only one in ten Democrats are willing to admit there are issues here, then we really do live in two different worlds.

More to the point, whatever support there is for this President is obviously not very strong. He commands no crowds. Nobody seems to care one way or another about him. He goes on national cable news to hold a town forum for the country and twice as many Americans tune into Fox News to watch their normal programming.

It's not the 50% that should worry Democrats. It's the fact that those 50% do not care all that much. Trump might have wallowed in the mid 40's - but that 45% or so were rabid fans willing to go to the mat for him. There seems to be only luke warm support that involves much excuse making and justification for why this guy deserves support.

Obviously Joe Biden didn't end the polarization of the country. In fact, it's quite obviously worse today than it was before he was elected. Our political leaders cannot agree on much of anything and right now the Democrats are looking to push trillions of dollars in new spending (on top of the trillions we have already added to the debt since Covid) without a single opposition vote.

Obviously Joe Biden didn't fix Covid. We are looking at a new wave and what (other than blame other people) has the Administration actually done about it? There seems to be a deer in the headlights lack of any attention, leadership, or action on the subject. Where is the vaccination booster? Why don't we know more about the variant? Are there going to be more?

Inflation is up, gas prices are up, apparently even unemployment cases are up. The economy is a mixed bag at a time when it should be shooting to the moon just based on a pent up demand. What is the plan at the top "other" than to spend trillions more on "social justice" and "green energy".

Funny how the economy for pre-covid Trump years was as good as it had ever been in our lifetime and we managed to get there without trillions in stimulus.

AN OLD, UNRELIABLE FRIEND

Documents show the bipartisan infrastructure proposal and Democrats' separate $3.5 trillion measure may both claim savings from long-term economic growth the bills would supposedly spur.

That concept is called dynamic scoring, and Republicans have long embraced it to paint their tax cuts as cost-free. That's not happened.

“The tax cuts will pay for themselves," Steven Mnuchin, Trump's Treasury secretary, said repeatedly about the 2017 tax law. Instead, The CBO estimated that even including increased economic activity, that measure will drive up federal deficits by $1.9 trillion over a decade.

Florida Leads U.S. in Covid-19 Cases as Hospitalizations SurgeDriving the rise are the Delta variant, large numbers of unvaccinated, relaxation of preventive measures and more indoor time

MIAMI—Florida is recording more Covid-19 cases than any other U.S. state, as hospitalizations in some areas increase at the fastest rate since the start of the pandemic.

The state accounts for one in five new infections in the U.S. and logged 67,413 cases over the past week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Florida had 314 cases per 100,000 people over the past week, second only to Louisiana. The weekly total of new cases reported by Florida jumped more than fourfold between July 1 and July 22, reaching its highest point since mid-January.

Epidemiologists say various factors are at play: large numbers of unvaccinated people, a relaxation of preventive measures like mask-wearing and social distancing, the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus and the congregation of people indoors during hot summer months.

“All of those things together are a recipe for the data that we’re seeing,” said Jason Salemi, an epidemiologist at the University of South Florida. “It’s a cause for concern...the speed with which the indicators are going up.”

The number of people hospitalized in Florida has climbed steeply over the past month, reaching 3,849 on July 17, the largest tally since late February, according to a data dashboard created by Dr. Salemi. Patients are skewing younger, with 53% under age 60, compared with 30% at the start of the year.

Select Committee Taps Ex-CIA Watchdog
July 24, 2021 at 12:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 3 Comments
“As the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot prepares to get underway next week, it will include former CIA Inspector General David Buckley in the role of staff director,” Yahoo News reports.

“The selection of Buckley to serve in that capacity, however, could come back to haunt the Democrats on the committee who selected him. Yahoo News has obtained a previously unpublished 2019 report compiled by the Department of Homeland Security’s watchdog office showing that investigators urged the CIA to take action against Buckley for his alleged retaliation against a whistleblower, a conclusion that would likely be troubling to potential witnesses who might testify in the Jan. 6 inquiry.”

States Scale Back Virus Reporting
July 24, 2021 at 12:06 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
“Several states
scaled back their reporting of COVID-19 statistics this month just as cases across the country started to skyrocket, depriving the public of real-time information on outbreaks, cases, hospitalizations and deaths in their communities,” the AP reports.

“The shift to weekly instead of daily reporting in Florida, Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota marked a notable shift during a pandemic in which coronavirus dashboards have become a staple for Americans closely tracking case counts and trends to navigate a crisis that has killed more than 600,000 people in the U.S.”

NBC News:
“Thousands of Afghans who are eligible for a U.S. evacuation out of the country now face one final life-and-death hurdle — getting to Kabul without being captured or killed by the Taliban.

“The Biden administration this week emailed hundreds of Afghans who worked for the U.S. government telling them to prepare for evacuation to the U.S. in coming days… But the Afghans have to make their way to the capital of Kabul on their own in order to be evacuated.”

Unlikely Partners Pelosi and Cheney Team Up
July 24, 2021 at 11:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard
“Politics often creates
unlikely alliances, the odd-couple arrangements between would-be foes who drop their differences to engage on a common cause,” the AP reports.

“But the emerging partnership between Pelosi and Cheney is remarkable, if not astonishing,
as the longtime political adversaries join forces to investigate what happened the day former President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol.

“Rarely has there been a meeting of the minds like this —
two of the strongest women on Capitol Hill, partisans at opposite ends of the political divide — bonding over a shared belief that the truth about the insurrection should come out and those responsible held accountable. They believe no less than the functioning of America’s democracy is on the line.”

Virus Surge Disrupts Office-Return Plans
July 24, 2021 at 11:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard
New York Times:
“When companies began announcing tentative return-to-office plans this spring, there was a sense of optimism behind the messages. Covid cases were dwindling in the United States as the vaccine rollout picked up pace. Employers largely hoped their workers would get shots on their own, motivated by raffle tickets, paid time off and other perks, if not by the consensus of the medical community.”

“In recent days, that tone has suddenly shifted.
The Delta variant, a more contagious version of the coronavirus, is sweeping through the country.
Fewer than half of Americans are fully vaccinated, exacerbating the situation…

It all adds up to a difficult calculation for America’s business leaders, who hoped the country would already be fully on a path to normalcy, with employees getting back to offices.
Instead, individual companies are now being forced to make tough decisions that they had hoped could be avoided,
such as whether to reverse reopening plans
or
institute vaccine mandates for employees.”

Whitlock: Blame Joe Biden, Barack Obama, the New York Times, and ESPN for DeAndre Hopkins’ vaccine skepticism

ccording to this country's newspaper of record, the New York Times, America is systemically racist and has been since 1619.

President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, former President Barack Obama, former first lady Michelle Obama, the six members of the U.S. House of Representatives who call themselves "The Squad," CNN, MSNBC, ESPN, Nike, the NBA, the NFL, our highest academic institutions, and Black Twitter all, in some way, support the New York Times' narrative on America.

And you wonder why football star DeAndre Hopkins is reluctant to take the COVID vaccine?

There's no mystery here. Hopkins' skepticism about the efficacy of the vaccines makes perfect sense. As a black man, he's been programmed to distrust the motives and deeds of the country that enriched him. When he turns on his television, pops an app on his smartphone, or listens to his favorite R&B/hip-hop radio station, he's overwhelmed by anti-American sentiment.

America is Derek Chauvin and Hopkins is George Floyd. Hopkins' racist country sees him as a violent drug addict who must be subdued by any means necessary.

I'd question his sanity if he enthusiastically took the vax.

President Biden needs to get tough. He should explain that while we cherish freedom in America, you do not have the right to do anything and everything when it endangers the lives of others or places burdens on them.

Here are some things that you are forced to do in the United States: go to school, pay taxes, register for the draft (if you are male), serve on a jury. There are also many things that you are not allowed to do that might be mistakenly seen as involving no one else: You may not buy or sell controlled substances, litter on public streets, make loud noise after certain hours, and so on. If you drive a car, you are required to get a license, buy insurance, wear a seat belt, obey street signs and speed limits, have the car inspected and limit alcohol intake before driving. If you want your children to go to a public school in the United States, they must be vaccinated. These are all mandates because seemingly private actions actually impose public costs. You should not have the right to spread disease and occupy a precious hospital bed.

Some Republican politicians and conservative media figures are finally urging people to get vaccinated. But they may be too late. As it did with the rise of Donald Trump, the allegations of voter fraud and the accusations of a stolen election, the party has indulged its crazies for too long, fanning the flames of falsehood and creating a miasma of misinformation. A number of Republican governors, such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, have pandered to their base by prohibiting businesses and government entities from requiring proof of vaccination.

Corporate executives should require injections to keep their jobs.

“The conspiracies need to stop, we need to end the spread of this thing, by getting your mark of the bea-, shot. You’re helping your neighbor, benefiting everyone, and growing the economy.”

Many patriotic Americans living in Texas and Florida have announced they have no plans of going into such camps, one Texan tweeting “Yeah good luck, I have mines around my ranch, good luck to the feds.” Another Floridan tweeted “Will there be meth in the camps? If so it isn’t really all that bad.”

Local kids are actually looking forward to these camps as they believe it’ll be the closest they’ll ever get to getting laid, while also not having to get a shot at the same time.

But as the President he has the bully pulpit.

He has been traveling the country and yes the CNN interview.

It highly unlikely that he will get less than a 50% approval rating, because he is a very experienced politician.

Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs (D) said that her message to former President Trump before his visit on Saturday is to “take your loss and accept it and move on,” referring to the ongoing partisan audit of the 2020 election results.

Trump is heading to Phoenix on Saturday for a “Rally to Save Our Elections!” event hosted by the conservative group Turning Point Action. He is likely to touch on his baseless claims that widespread voter fraud occurred during last year’s election.

ADVERTISING

“How dangerous is it for Donald Trump to be coming to your state tomorrow, do you think?” CNN's Jim Acosta asked Hobbs on “The Situation Room” on Friday.

“Well, it is dangerous. I'm glad you pointed that out. But the bottom line is it doesn't matter what he says or does. Nothing is going to change the outcome of the 2020 election. But it also doesn't change how dangerous this is,” said Hobbs, who is running in Arizona’s 2022 gubernatorial race.

“The bottom line is that Arizonians are tired of being led by conspiracy theorists. They don't support this fake audit, and they're ready for leaders who are going to put those partisan games aside and deal with real issues,” Hobbs continued.

Heeding Trump’s call to reexamine the election results of 2020, Republicans from Arizona’s state Senate launched an audit in December focused in Maricopa County, which President Biden won by more than 2 percentage points in November, in an attempt to undermine the election results.

Biden won the state by more than 10,000 votes, the first time that a Democratic presidential candidate had won Arizona since 1996.

“So what is your message to Donald Trump ahead of this rally? Don't come?” Acosta asked later.

“Well, I mean, like most grown-ups, take your loss and accept it and move on. ... Nothing that's going on here is going to change the outcome, and, really, this is nothing more than being a sore loser,” Hobbs said.

The former is lying about everything including the big lie.

The shift to weekly instead of daily reporting in Florida, Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota marked a notable shift during a pandemic in which coronavirus dashboards have become a staple for Americans closely tracking case counts and trends to navigate a crisis that has killed more than 600,000 people in the U.S.

But reporting the numbers on a weekly basis still allows people to see the overall trends while smoothing out some of he day-to-day variations that come from the way cases are reported and not the actual number of new cases. And experts have long advised that it makes to pay more attention to the seven-day rolling average of new cases because the numbers can vary widely from one day to the next.

And Florida health officials say that they have not curtailed the sharing of data with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Maintaining daily updates on the virus does require significant resources for states. For instance, Kansas went to reporting virus numbers three times a week in May because the state health department said providing daily statistics consumed too much time for its already overwhelmed staff.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Several states scaled back their reporting of COVID-19 statistics this month just as cases across the country started to skyrocket, depriving the public of real-time information on outbreaks, cases, hospitalizations and deaths in their communities.

In Nebraska, the state actually stopped reporting on the virus altogether for two weeks after Gov. Pete Ricketts declared an end to the official virus emergency, forcing news reporters to file public records requests or turn to national websites that track state data to learn about COVID statistics. The state backtracked two weeks later and came up with a weekly site that provides some basic numbers.

Other governments have gone the other direction and released more information, with Washington, D.C., this week adding a dashboard on breakthrough cases to show the number of residents who contracted the virus after getting vaccines. Many states have recently gone to reporting virus numbers only on weekdays.

When Florida changed the frequency of its virus reporting earlier this month, officials said it made sense given the decreasing number of cases and the increasing number of people being vaccinated.

Cases started soaring soon after, and Florida earlier this week made up up one-fifth of the country's new coronavirus infections. As a result, Florida's weekly releases — typically done on Friday afternoons — have consequences for the country's understanding of the current summer surge, with no statewide COVID stats coming out of the virus hotspot for six days a week.
Esp
In Florida's last two weekly reports, the number of new cases shot up from 23,000 to 45,000 and then 73,000 on Friday, an average of more than 10,000 day. Hospitals are starting to run out of space in parts of the state.

Nada Hassanein, USA TODAY

BRISTOL, Florida – The calls haven’t stopped.

For the last week, paramedic Melissa Peddie has fielded them back-to-back for cases of COVID-19.

Peddie runs the only ambulance in Liberty County, a sprawling, sparsely populated community in Florida’s rural Big Bend, where as of last week just 23.9% of residents were fully vaccinated. The county has seen a dramatic surge in COVID-19 cases during July, mirroring other communities across the nation where many people have not gotten the shot.

Peddie, 51, is among the small minority. For her, vaccination was a “no-brainer.”

“I knew I would get the vaccine,” she said. “Every day I climb in the back of that truck is a risk."

As the highly contagious delta variant rapidly spreads, Liberty County is a hot zone in a state on fire. Florida leads the nation in new cases, recording more this week than California, Texas, New York and Illinois combined. And like elsewhere, the unvaccinated make up nearly all of the hospitalized and the dead.

With the lowest population of all 67 Florida counties according to Census Bureau estimates, Liberty's rate of new COVID-19 cases during the week ending Thursday is in the state's top 15 highest, alongside four other rural Big Bend counties, Florida Department of Health reports show.

That includes neighboring Calhoun County, where vaccination rates last week were similarly low, at 23.6%. It's seeing an even bigger surge, with the fourth highest rate of new cases in the state. With two ambulances and a population of about 14,000, the county saw its number of new COVID cases jump in three weeks from four to 19 to 62.

I grew up in NYC, the melting pot of race, religion, and nationality.  My family could have been the stereotypical example of the scuffling, bar-fighting Irish who dominated the landscape in the early years of the 20th century.  Be honest; don't you generally characterize the Irish as being prone to alcohol consumption and slugfests?  Well, some of them are.  Yet the majority of Irish whom I know and have known are hardly what I'd call drunks and saloon brawlers (with the possible exception of some of my aunts and uncles, may they rest in peace).  Yet the stereotype persists.

Are all Jews greedy?  Some are, but so are some Italians, blacks, Asians, Greeks, and Lithuanians.  Did Jews get that reputation because they're known as being more industrious and successful in business?  If so, it's entirely possible that the stereotype came about because of the envy of their competitors.  The same opportunities are available to everyone.  The difference is that some people are not willing to work as hard as others.  Success and greed are mutually exclusive.  One can be super-successful and extremely generous and generous. If you are not Jewish, Italian or black.

Democrats’ plan to spend more than $4 trillion over a period of years on everything from road repair to child care would boost the U.S. economy in the long run without sparking higher inflation, according to a new analysis from Moody’s Analytics.

Roughly tracking President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda, the $579 billion infrastructure bill currently under negation in the Senate, and the $3.5 trillion reconciliation package Democrats hope to pass alongside it, would increase GDP growth while benefiting lower- and middle-income workers most, Moody’s chief economist Mark Zandi and assistant director Bernard Yaros Jr. say.

The plan also seeks to avoid significant deficit spending. “The legislation is more-or-less paid for on a dynamic basis through higher taxes on multinational corporations and the well-to-do and a range of other pay-fors,” the analysts write, adding that the fiscal support it would provide would be enough to get the economy back to full employment, without pushing the economy much beyond that. “Worries that the plan will ignite undesirably high inflation and an overheating economy are overdone,” they say.

A one-two punch: On its own, the smaller infrastructure bill would have a relatively modest effect and start out as a drag on the economy as the pay-fors including multiple tax hikes take effect, the report says. But by 2023, as spending flows, economic growth would be 0.6 percentage points higher relative to a baseline with no infrastructure investment. At its peak in the middle of the decade, the programs would create an additional 650,000 jobs. However, the unemployment rate would not fall below 4%, and the negative effects of the pandemic would never be fully overcome.

If Congress also enacts the larger, $3.5 trillion spending package, the positive economic effects would be amplified. Most of the negative effects of the pandemic recession would be erased by 2022, the analysts say, while economic growth would be about one percentage point higher compared to the baseline.

“The increased social investments in the package, particularly related to child and elder care, healthcare, and housing, also quickly support stronger GDP and jobs,” Zandi and Yaros Jr. say. “There are more than

2 million more jobs by mid-decade and the unemployment rate is at least 0.5 percentage point lower.” Over the long run, the economy becomes more productive thanks to a better-educated population and higher workforce participation.

Inflation threat downplayed: The analysts say that while worries about rising inflation cannot be dismissed, current conditions – including an unemployment rate near 6% and a depressed labor force participation rate – indicate that the economy still has plenty of slack. Additionally, the spending plans include elements that would reduce inflationary pressure in the long run.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The bottom line:

Though the analysis is unlikely to change partisan minds, it offers Democrats a strong defense of their proposals, as well as their general approach to social welfare spending. “Greater investments in public infrastructure and social programs will lift productivity and labor force growth,” Zandi and Yaros Jr. say. “Passage of legislation is far from certain but failing to pass legislation would certainly diminish the economy’s prospects.”

What's more, and again using CDC data, as of July 21, the "7-day moving" average number of Wuhan Virus deaths (for all ages) in Alabama was 3.  On July 18, the day of Dr. Cobia's post, it was zero.  At the end of June, it was 3.  At the end of May, it was 4.  At the end of April, it was 7.  For the U.S. as a whole, as of July 21, the "7-day moving" average number of Wuhan Virus deaths (for all ages) was 223.  At the end of June, it was 225.  At the end of May, it was 413.  At the end of April, it was 612.

The numbers are similar when one looks at hospitalization rates.  Again using CDC data, in Alabama, for ages 0–17, as of July 20, the hospitalization rate was 0.16 per 100,000.  At the end of June, the rate was 0.09 per 100,000.  At the end of May, it was 0.11 per 100,000.  At the end of April, it was 0.16 per 100,000.  Likewise, in Alabama, for the age group 18–29, the July down to April numbers (per 100,000) are 0.67, 0.18, 0.31, and 0.33.  Even though the latter group has seen an uptick in the hospitalization rate in recent months, the July number (0.67) is exactly what it was at the end of March.  For the U.S. as a whole, for ages 0–17, the corresponding rates (per 100,000) of hospitalization are 0.14, 0.09, 0.12, and 0.18.  For ages 18–29, they are 0.53, 0.30, 0.40, and 0.63.

Thus, the data are again clear: whether or not "cases" are on the rise, whether or not vaccination rates have flattened, the numbers that matter most — hospitalizations and deaths — show no disturbing trend, in Alabama or the U.S. as a whole.  The lockdown, mask-up apologists need to take heed: we will not stand for your (mostly) useless, life-defeating, economy-destroying measures again!

As a transplant recipient whose compromised immune system placed him at severe risk of Covid-19, Mr. Cheney found that his contempt for the Trump White House only grew during the pandemic. He had also known and admired Dr. Anthony S. Fauci for many years.

At the same time, Ms. Cheney publicly supported Dr. Fauci and seemed to be trolling the White House last June when she tweeted “Dick Cheney says WEAR A MASK” over a photograph of her father — looking every bit the stoic Westerner — sporting a face covering and cowboy hat (hashtag “#realmenwearmasks”).

She has received notable support in her otherwise lonely efforts from a number of top-level figures of the Republican establishment, including many of her father’s old White House colleagues. Former President George W. Bush — through a spokesman — made a point of thanking Mr. Cheney “for his daughter’s service” in a call to his former vice president on his 80th birthday in January.

Maine Lawmaker Who Opposed Coronavirus Restrictions Reportedly Has COVID-19

Rep. Chris Johansen, a Republican legislator from the Aroostook County town of Monticello who has been an outspoken opponent of coronavirus restrictions, has reportedly contracted COVID-19.

In a recording shared by Mainer News contributor Crash Barry, a man alleged to be Johansen said, “Listen up, I’ve got COVID and I’m really, really sick and I just don’t have time to talk to you today.”

When contacted by the Bangor Daily News on Friday, Johansen said “I’m not talking” and hung up the phone.

“We do not respond or comment to the press on the health of our members or staff, instead preferring to honor their privacy. We are always open to comment on legislative policy and/or legislative procedural issues should the press choose to cover that,” Kathleen Dillingham, spokesperson and House Minority Leader, said.

The lawmaker’s wife, Cindy Johansen, who is the corresponding secretary-officer for the Aroostook County Republicans, shared on social media that she is sick with COVID-19.

Neither Chris Johansen nor his wife have received a coronavirus vaccination.

Cindy Johansen posted to her Facebook on July 16 that she had not been feeling well. “Feeling like I’m going to pass out. Have passed out on garage floor, legs were like rubber,” she said.

On July 21, she posted that she was diagnosed with “covid and asthma.” She shared that it was “horrible to be alone” and that she was “going on day three,” an allusion to the required isolation of COVID-19 patients who have been admitted to a hospital.

Chris Johansen has been an outspoken opponent of state-mandated coronavirus restrictions and has organized multiple protests. In April 2020, he organized a protest in front of the Blaine House asking Democratic Gov. Janet Mills to reopen the state’s economy, as well as downplaying the damage that the spread of COVID-19 would have on communities across the country.

A second protest organized later that month flouted pandemic gathering restrictions.

Johansen was also one of seven lawmakers who refused to wear masks at the Maine State House, a requirement that was left in place even after the state’s mask mandate was lifted as coronavirus vaccination rates started to improve throughout the state. Johansen was subsequently removed from his committee position, but continued to push back against State House rules.
