So are there really no vaccinated people dying?

Southern Nevada reports 225 breakthrough hospitalizations and 49 breakthrough deathslink to pdf

Breakthrough cases are U.S. residents with a SARS-CoV2 RNA or antigen detected on respiratory specimen collected greater than or equal to 14 days after completing the primary series of an FDA authorized COVID-19 vaccine (i.e., complete vaccination). Complete vaccination is two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or one dose of the Johnson and Johnson (Janssen) vaccine.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently updated guidance on reporting of breakthrough infections to only report those that have been hospitalized and contacted by public health and an interview is performed or are a recorded COVID-19 death. Due the small number of associated deaths, further breakdowns are not provided at this time to protect privacy and confidentiality. Data is considered preliminary and subject to change.
As of today, Southern Nevada Health District is reporting a total of 225 breakthrough hospitalizations and 49 breakthrough deaths (37 of them were hospitalized) in Clark county, Nevada.

So Clark county is Las Vegas and the country has a population of almost 2 million people. I am not quite sure what time period this is representing as they apparently have not always kept this particular statistic. Clark county overall has had approximately 5000 deaths overall, although it would look as if 70% or more of those deaths would have occurred before anyone was fully vaccinate. That leaves that county with approximately 1500 deaths since people would have started to become fully vaccinated. Moreover, the percentage of unvaccinated would have remained quite high for the bulk of this.

So these breakthrough deaths would (at the very least) account for no less than 3% of the overall deaths in play since the vaccine became available. But if this statistic has only been kept for a few weeks (as it is being suggested) then these deaths could account for closer to 10% to 20% of the overall deaths in Clark county. An analysis from Red State is suggesting that these 49 deaths are a representation of very recent data (although I don't see where they got that) and they are suggesting breakthrough deaths are over 50% of all of the deaths in Southern Nevada during this recent time period.

Regardless of whether it is 10%, 20%, or even 50%  this would be way, way, way out of line with what we have been told. Because it is being implied that almost nobody who is vaccinated is getting sick enough to go to the hospital, much less have to worry about dying. But perhaps we are being told this little white lie for our own good.

Celebrating the shootdown of John McCain

You despicable piece of it, my father flew fifty-one B-17 bomber missions in WW2 and he could have been shot down many times, but he came home, and despite Trump's opinion, he would have been a hero even if he had been shot down, as many he knew were.

McCain was famous, but refused to be returned home before the other prisoners. If that is not herosism, nothing is.

Jan. 6 investigators include Trump White House in first document requests

The select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection on Wednesday sent a flurry of requests to federal agencies for records related to the attack, including communications from the Trump White House.

It’s the panel’s first step to seek documents on how the U.S. government handled the chaos of the siege on the legislature. Set up by House Democrats with two anti-Trump GOP members, the select committee is escalating its investigation even as the chamber breaks for a monthlong recess.

The committee, chaired by Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), plans to seek executive branch records related to the attack and its run-up — including "communications within and among the White House and Executive Branch agencies" on and before Jan. 6.

The select panel is also seeking records relating to attempts to place politically loyal personnel in positions across the government after the election; the planning, organization and response to Jan. 6 and earlier; and attempts to overturn the rule of law and overturn the 2020 election. One segment of the request notably seeks "documents and communications related to the mental stability of Donald Trump or his fitness for office."

Its requests went to the National Archives and Records Administration, the Justice Department, the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of the Interior, the FBI and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Thompson gave the agencies a two-week deadline to respond. The broad range of the requests could make it difficult for them to do so in time.

The committee asked the National Archives for “all documents and communications within the White House” involving a host of Trump World denizens, including Hope Hicks, former national security adviser Robert O’Brien, Trump adviser Peter Navarro, Kayleigh McEnany, Steve Bannon, Michael Flynn, Melania Trump, all Trump’s adult children except Tiffany Trump, Kimberly Guilfoyle, Rudy Giuliani and Roger Stone.

This page provides information and resources to help public health departments and laboratories investigate and report COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough cases.

Vaccine breakthrough cases are expected. COVID-19 vaccines are effective and are a critical tool to bring the pandemic under control. However, no vaccines are 100% effective at preventing illness. Some fully vaccinated people will get sick, and some will even be hospitalized or die from COVID-19. However, there is evidence that vaccination may make illness less severe for those who are vaccinated and still get sick. The risk of infection, hospitalization, and death are all much lower in vaccinated compared to unvaccinated people.More than 168 million people in the United States have been fully vaccinated as of August 16, 2021. Like with other vaccines, vaccine breakthrough cases will occur, even though the vaccines are working as expected. Asymptomatic infections among vaccinated people will also occur.Current data suggest that COVID-19 vaccines authorized for use in the United States offer protection against most SARS-CoV-2 variants circulating in the United States. However, variants will cause some vaccine breakthrough cases.

James thanks you are exactly correct about Ch his post today is the craziest thing I've ever seen before

Coronavirus vaccines provided strong protection against infection for essential workers earlier this year, but became less effective as the highly contagious Delta variant became the dominant form of the virus, according to a study published on Tuesday by federal health officials.

It was not clear whether the decline in protection was caused by the emergence of the Delta variant or the lengthening period of time since the inoculations were begun. Vaccine effectiveness showed possible signs of decline starting four months after vaccinations were first rolled out.

“What we were trying to figure out is: Is this Delta, or is this waning effectiveness?” said Ashley Fowlkes, an epidemiologist on the Covid-19 response team at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the study’s lead author. “Our conclusion is that we can’t really tell.”

Researchers followed thousands of first responders, health care workers and others who could not work remotely in eight locations in Arizona, Florida, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Minnesota. The participants were tested for coronavirus infection every week for 35 weeks, as well as any time they developed Covid-like symptoms.

Most of the vaccinated workers received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine; one-third received the Moderna vaccine and 2 percent the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Overall, the vaccines reduced infections among vaccinated workers by 80 percent from Dec. 14, when the U.S. vaccination campaign began, to Aug. 14, compared with unvaccinated workers. (The results were adjusted for factors including occupation, demographic characteristics, frequency of close social contact and mask use.)

But while the shots reduced infections by 91 percent before the emergence of the Delta variant, their protectiveness dropped to 66 percent as the variant became dominant in each region.

“We really wanted to let people know that we were seeing a decline in the effectiveness of the vaccine in protection against any infection, symptomatic or asymptomatic, since the Delta variant became dominant,” Dr. Fowlkes said.

“But we also want to reinforce that 66 percent effectiveness is a really high number,” she added. “It’s not 91 percent, but it is still a two-thirds reduction in the risk of infection among vaccinated participants.”

The drop-off in effectiveness “should be interpreted with caution,” however, because the observation period during which Delta was dominant was short, Dr. Fowlkes said, and the overall number of infections was small.

Another C.D.C. study released on Tuesday analyzed infections and hospitalizations in Los Angeles County from May 1 to July 25 of this year. While vaccinated people did become infected, the researchers concluded that among the unvaccinated, infection rates were 4.9 times as high, and the hospitalization rate was 29 times as high.

Sometimes people who were immunized have died

GOP Divided on How to Handle Afghan Evacuees
August 25, 2021 at 5:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

“The Republican Party is united in its criticism of President Biden’s chaotic military withdrawal from Afghanistan. But the crisis has also exposed a deep internal divide between party leaders over relocating Afghan refugees at home,” the New York Times reports.

“Many Republican lawmakers have accused Mr. Biden of abandoning the Afghan interpreters and guides who helped the United States during two decades of war, leaving thousands of people in limbo in a country now controlled by the Taliban.

“But others — including former President Donald Trump and Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the minority leader — have sought to fold the issue of Afghan refugees into the anti-immigrant stance of the party’s far right.”

In other words, they risked their lives and families for us and for our troops against the Taliban, but the Trump fanatics don't want them in our country.

Rather than just making sweeping accusations, proponents for taking them should state the case as to why it's in our national interest to take them.

We stand to be over-run with Afghans who are using fake visas and passports, and other fake security credentials to access the US. At a minimum each refugee should be required to pass the strictest and harshest background check we can perform. And even if they pass, why the fuck do WE need to take them?

There's 190+ countries on the earth. Let another relinquish their sovereignty and security for bullshit humanitarian reasons.

And if they MUST come to the US, let's send them to LA, Portland OR, Seattle WA, Martha's Vineyard, The Hamptons, The Upper West Side, Chicago, Baltimore, and every other liberal hell hole in the US.

You democrats want them then YOU take them and live with the consequences.

The folks in Lewiston ME opened their arms and their doors and their community to a pack of Somali's a while back. A hard lesson was learned. What was once a quaint New England mill town is now known as "The Dirty Lew" complete with the rise in violent and property crime, and the town turning into a veritable shit hole.

The CDC continues to undermine its credibility by claiming strong evidence for the efficacy of lockdowns and mask mandates. Dozens of studies have found that lockdowns are ineffective, and one recent analysis of trends in the United States and other countries found that lockdown policies are associated with an increase in excess deaths. The evidence offered by the CDC for mask mandates is weak, as Jeffrey H. Anderson has documented, and the most rigorous research—from more than a dozen randomized clinical trials—suggests that masks are ineffective (and possibly counterproductive) at stopping viral spread. One recent study, which tracked Covid case growth across the United States, concluded that “mask mandates and use are not associated with slower state-level Covid-19 spread during Covid-19 growth surges.”

The House Jan. 6 Committee sent a vast document request on Wednesday, demanding that eight federal agencies provide information relating to former President Trump’s involvement in the Capitol insurrection.

The panel is asking for documents that include Trump White House records held by the National Archives and Records Administration, as well as documents from the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Justice, and Interior.

The committee also directed its requests towards the intelligence and national security communities, asking for information from the FBI, Director of National Intelligence, and National Counterterrorism Center.

The panel wants records encompassing Trump’s activities, movements, and meetings on Jan. 6, as well as documents and communications from April 1, 2020 until the end of Trump’s term having to do with attempts to contest the 2020 election results and to “delay or impede” the electoral count.

“Our Constitution provides for a peaceful transfer of power, and this investigation seeks to evaluate threats to that process, identify lessons learned and recommend laws, policies, procedures, rules, or regulations necessary to protect our republic in the future,” panel Chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) wrote in a letter to the archives.

The requests appear to capture dozens of angles relating to Trump’s broad attempt at securing his hold on power by blocking the results of the 2020 election from going into force.

This includes elements of the scandal that are well-known — the removal of U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia BJ Pak, for example, and Trump’s interactions with a host of Georgia officials in a bid to overturn election results in the state. The requests also encompass communications between the White House and Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, as well as Trump 2020 campaign workers like Brad Parscale and pollster Tony Fabrizio.

But the panel also latches on to characters that have appeared to be more peripheral, asking for communications with former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), for example.

Other components of the insurrection attempt — including potential coordination with extremist groups — fall under the request’s ambit, with Congress asking for White House documents relating to QAnon, the Proud Boys, Stop the Steal, Oath Keepers, or Three Percenters.

U.S. and allied planes have flown an additional 19,200 people out of Kabul in the past 24 hours, officials said on Wednesday, as the Biden administration makes substantial inroads into getting American citizens and Afghans who worked for the United States over the last 20 years out of Afghanistan.

But thousands of U.S. citizens are believed to still be in the country, and President Biden’s Aug. 31 deadline for the withdrawal of American troops is rapidly approaching. Tens of thousands of Afghans who qualify for special immigration visas are also waiting to be evacuated.

As of 3 a.m. in Washington, the United States had evacuated about 82,300 people from Kabul’s international airport since Aug. 14.

I think it's inevitable that things will get more desperate on the ground as the final deadline approaches, but we're at 82,000 with six days left to go. By the time this is over we will have evacuated a helluva lot of people from Kabul

South Dakota COVID cases explode after Sturgis motorcycle rally

Sarah K. Burris

August 25, 2021

For the second year in a row, the Sturgis motorcycle rally has become a super-spreader event. In the 14 days since the rally, Meade County has had more than 1,500 percent increase in cases.

NBC News reported that South Dakota has 3,819 new cases and seven deaths. It's the largest percentage increase of any state in the U.S. thus far.

Report Advertisement

"The state's rate of Covid-19 infections per capita in the past two weeks is in the bottom half of the country, but it's the sharp and sudden increase in case counts that sets it apart," said the report.

"It's not the highest it has ever been but is definitely at a number that puts us at a disadvantage," said Dr. Shankar Kurra, the vice president of medical affairs at Monument Health. "You have a strain on resources and a lot of stress on the health system to give timely care to non-Covid patients."

The annual biker rally usually draws as many as 500,00 people, but in the era of COVID, things were smaller. In 2020, the event was such a massive superspreader that 5 million cases could be traced back to the rally.

But that was when COVID wasn't the delta variant, which experts believe is more easily transmissible. In 2020, Harly Davidson refused to even send staff to the event out of fear for their safety.

One Sturgis 2021 attendee explained that there was no way he'd get the vaccine because it would "make you sterile and kill your ass," both false claims. While he relayed the story he broke into a coughing fit.

T-shirts were available reading, "Screw COVID — I went to Sturgis."

AKE JAN 6 INSURRECTION DAY A NATIONAL HOLIDAY!
Incitement indeed, happened on January 6th. That’s when Trump supporters thinking that the election was stolen, dangerously “meandered” through the halls of Congress

Never mind that many were invited and escorted inside the halls of the esteemed House of The People by Capitol police. To meander. Never mind they were incited to meander by the same FBI informants who later arrested them for meandering.

Many of the protesters were incarcerated for months. Some in solitary, without charges.

The People’s House was not meant for The People whose house it once was. It is meant for the people who hate everything the American people are thinking.

The people who were never threatened inside the House called in thirty thousand National Guard troops to make sure The People know who is boss. They ordered these soldiers to point lethal weapons at the heads of unarmed “The People,” who just wanted their voices heard.

“The People” had no right to protest what they logically thought was an illegitimate election, said the people who allegedly made the election illegitimate.

Just because the latter deliberately violated and changed state’s election laws in the middle of a campaign to gain power is no big deal. And none of The People’s business.

The Bill of Rights, another objectionable document, the people who govern us reminded The People, include the Right to Petition government. Petitioning government, formerly a clause within the First Amendment, is no longer operative. Social Media shut down the right to free speech for The People’s voices. Free speech remained free for people they liked. For example, they liked Joe Biden’s voice, Barack Obama’s, Nancy Pelosi’s, Iran’s mullahs calling for Death to America – and the voices of the media mob. They liked HAMAS and Hizbollah terrorist’s voices. They loved the Taliban’s voices who still have free rein on Twitter, Facebook, and CNN.

The voice they certainly didn’t like? Donald Trump’s.

Free speech is a right only given to George Soros & Company of fellow travelers who think that any government not theirs has no business governing The People.

The governing people’s view of the Second Amendment is more or less the same. And why not?

Personal firearms are meant to protect The People whose bodies are valuable. Bodies clearly more valuable than your bodies. For example, multiple bodyguards to guard Michael Bloomberg’s, Hillary Clinton’s, Joe Biden’s, and Barack Obama’s bodies. Valuable bodies.

Your body not being valuable, obviously don’t need guns to protect it.

New Scott Movement said...

What needs protection are the people governing the House. 30,000 guns.

From the get-go we knew that the “January 6th Investigation” circus called by Democrats was blowing wind – just another Russia Hoax. Pretense. Yet they went ahead anyway out of pique and spite. They did it to cover up their own cynical manipulation of the election process, by indicting half the nation for thinking that the election was stolen by the self-same Democrats. Because it was. They saw no possibility to suggest there was cause for The People to demand of their representatives a temporarily, one week bipartisan review, before certifying Joe Biden. These “patriotic representatives” who tear up the Congressional Record refused to heed the people’s voice.

Given no recourse, and before 30,000 M16s were pointed at their heads, The People resorted to peacefully petitioning, asking for a hearing.

The crazed and spiteful Nancy Pelosi tore up the Congressional Record copy of the State of the Union message on live TV. And then she and her high tech mates tore up the First Amendment the legacy and social media no longer liked. As soon as time permits, they’ll tear up the Second Amendment.

After all, she knows her body is valuable.

Hey, it’s just the Constitution they swore to uphold.

Not for you.

For themselves.

Every day going forward we will remind America of This Day That Will Live in Infamy, the day Democrats “defended democracy” by shutting down voices not willing to shut up and obey. The day these virtuous people of the “Sanctified House” (what Nancy called it just before she tore up the SOTA speech), called up an army to put down peaceful Americans they didn’t like.

This day will be commemorated all right.

This time with a national celebration to make January 6th of every year a National Holiday.

INSURRECTION DAY!

It, to remind us of the day Democracy vanished after the voices of the American Founding was no longer heard. To remind us of the patriotic Democrats who swore to uphold the constitution, and instead, gleefully and spitefully tore it up as they stole the election. And lastly, to remind The People of the need to defend America’s Legacy!

More people in Florida are catching the coronavirus, being hospitalized and dying of Covid-19 now than at any previous point in the pandemic, underscoring the perils of limiting public health measures as the Delta variant rips through the state.

This week, 227 virus deaths were being reported each day in Florida, on average, as of Tuesday, a record for the state and by far the most in the United States right now. The average for new known cases reached 23,314 a day on the weekend, 30 percent higher than the state’s previous peak in January, according to a New York Times database. Across the country, new deaths have climbed to more than 1,000 a day, on average.

And hospitalizations in Florida have almost tripled in the past month, according to federal data, stretching many hospitals to the breaking point. The surge prompted the mayor of Orlando to ask residents to conserve water in order to limit the strain on the city’s supply of liquid oxygen, which is needed both to purify drinking water and to treat Covid-19 patients.

Even as cases continue to surge, with more than 17,200 people hospitalized with the virus across Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, has held firm on banning vaccine and mask mandates. Several school districts have gone ahead with mask mandates anyway.

Overall, 52 percent of Floridians are fully vaccinated, but the figure is less than 30 percent in some of the state’s hardest-hit counties.

On Monday, dozens of doctors and hospital employees in Palm Beach County gathered for an early morning news conference to beseech the unvaccinated to get shots, emphasizing that the surge was overwhelming the health care system and destroying lives.

“We are exhausted,” said Dr. Rupesh Dharia, an internal medicine specialist. “Our patience and resources are running low.”

A growing proportion of the people inundating hospitals and dying in Florida now are coming from younger segments of the population, particularly those ages 40 to 59, which were less vulnerable in earlier waves of the pandemic. The Delta variant is spreading among younger people, many who thought they were healthy and did not get vaccinated.

Dr. Chirag Patel, the assistant chief medical officer of UF Health Jacksonville, a hospital system in Northeast Florida, said the patients hospitalized with the virus during this latest surge tend to be younger and have fewer other health issues, but are nearly all unvaccinated. Of those who have died, including patients ranging in age from their 20s to their 40s, more than 90 percent were not inoculated, Dr. Patel said.

If you’ve been paying attention to the EV industry, you’ll know that Chevrolet has just issued a recall of the Bolt EV. It’s the third Bolt recall that’s taken place over the past several months, and they’re all related to a string of battery fires.

The big thing is that this recall is far more encompassing than the last two. The earlier events focused on a handful of Bolt models, but this time Chevrolet has issued a recall of every single Bolt and Bolt EUV. And that's arguably the absolute worst thing to happen to the electric car industry right now.

Good. Because every word was true.

I say bring every Afghan refugee to America that we can. And deliver them straight to the wealthiest, most elite, most privileged, and the deepest of deep blue areas in the country. Let those who are demanding to bring them here live with the consequences of their desires.

Just once.

Let's stop using the communities of the middle class struggling with inflation and other government-imposed hardships as dumping grounds for liberal wishes, wants and desires.

0linsky has a beautiful estate on Martha's Vineyard. One that just recently hosted a Covid super-spreader birthday party for ol' Skeets. Under large tents. Let's retrieve those tents and park a few thousand Afghan refugees on the grounds. The same with James Taylor's MV estate. And the Kennedy compound.

For once in their pathetic fucking lives let liberals live up to the standards they demand and impose on us.

I agreed with the President on getting out of the Afghanistan war but he has failed our allies in Afghanistan.

At least 250,000 Afghans who may be eligible for expedited American visas remain in Afghanistan, far too many for American forces to rescue before their deadline to leave next week, new estimates suggest.

Even if American forces continue their current pace of roughly 20,000 evacuations per day — a tall order — the estimates suggest the effort will not come close to rescuing the full group of Afghans who may be eligible to leave before President Biden’s deadline to depart, Aug. 31.

Many Afghan interpreters, advisers and others who worked with the U.S. government or American organizations over the past 20 years and their families are eligible for special visas. And many fear retribution from the Taliban and are desperate to leave.

NIGEL FARAGE: The medium-term problem is the resurgence of international terror, already evidence that extremist jihadi groups all over the world have taken great cheer from what the Taliban have done in Afghanistan. And so if we do find ourselves back engaged and, you know, let's be honest, the last few years, we've not seen major terrorist atrocities in the West. But if they start to happen again and we start to think, well, how do we go out again and try and stop these cells that are spreading international terror? How can we do it with the Americans? How can we do it with an ally that is treating us with contempt and betrayed us and into the bargain, many of our own citizens?

Certainly, if it's a Biden or Harris administration, honestly, there is no way, there is no way a British parliament right now would vote for military cooperation with America led by this administration. And that's a very sad thing to say, because since 1917, the U.K. and America have been side by side in virtually every major conflict. We've been the closest allies in terms of military action, in terms of intelligence sharing, in terms of culture, in terms of business. You couldn't have a better ally in the world. And right at the moment, I'm sorry, but there's no way we could enter into another operation with you.

At least 4,500 American citizens and their family members have been evacuated, and roughly 1,500 American citizens remain, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said on Wednesday.

Mr. Blinken said Wednesday that the United States would evacuate as many Afghan allies as possible, and that any Americans or Afghans who have worked with the U.S. mission and want to leave after that date should be free to do so. The Taliban have promised to allow “free passage” to those who qualify even after the withdrawal, he said.

“That effort will continue every day,” he said.

But the evacuation mission is widely expected to slow to a trickle once the U.S. military exits.

Despite their promises, the Taliban said they would block Afghans trying to leave the country from traveling to Kabul’s airport on Tuesday. Even with the Americans still operating the airport, the obstacles for anybody trying to evacuate are immense. Just getting there is a perilous ordeal, with jostling, desperate crowds braving Taliban checkpoints, clogging the roads and risking injury or death.

And some Afghan military interpreters and other close U.S. allies were being turned away at the airport by American officials in order to give priority to U.S. citizens and green card holders, a State Department official said on Monday. That account was supported by interviews with Afghans who have approached the airport in recent days, and American veterans groups and other organizations that have tried to organize departures.

One woman who worked for the United States Agency for International Development described being removed from the airport by American officials as she waited with her family at the airport.

“We risked our lives,” said the woman, who asked not to be named because of concerns for her family’s safety.

Shadi Hamid is a contributing writer at The Atlantic, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and a founding editor of Wisdom of Crowds. He is the author of Islamic Exceptionalism: How the Struggle Over Islam Is Reshaping the World and Temptations of Power.

The united states never understood Afghanistan. American planners thought they knew what the country needed, which was not quite the same as what its people wanted. American policy was guided by fantasies; chief among them was the idea that the Taliban could be eliminated and that an entire culture could be transformed in the process.

In an ideal world, the Taliban wouldn’t exist. But it does exist, and it will exist. Western observers always struggle to understand how groups as ruthless as the Taliban gain legitimacy and popular support. Surely Afghans remember the terror of Taliban rule in the 1990s, when women were whipped if they ventured outside without a burka and adulterers were stoned to death in soccer stadiums. How could those dark days be forgotten?

America saw the Taliban as plainly evil. To deem a group evil is to cast it outside of time and history. But this is a privileged view. Living in a democracy with basic security allows citizens to set their sights higher. They will be disappointed with even a relatively good government precisely because they expect more from it. In failed states and in the midst of civil war, however, the fundamental questions are ones of order and disorder, and how to have more of the former and less of the latter.

The Taliban knew this. After its fall from power in 2001, the group was weak, reeling from devastating air strikes targeting its leaders. But in recent years, it has been gaining ground and establishing deeper roots in local communities. The Taliban was brutal. At the same time, it often provided better governance than the distant and corrupt Afghan central government. Doing a little went a long way.

Afghanistan’s U.S.-backed government didn’t fail just because of the Taliban. It was hobbled from the start by America’s blind spots and biases. The United States saw a strong, centralized authority as the answer to Afghanistan’s problems and backed a constitution that invested the president with sweeping powers.

We didn't understand Afghanistan culture from day one.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) continued his attacks on the coronavirus vaccine while promoting several debunked Covid-19 “treatments” on a Washington Times podcast.

Said Johnson: “I’ve been an advocate for early treatment. I’m very agnostic. I don’t care what drug will work. Try a bunch of them.”

After Johnson promoted an anti-parasitic animal drug for animals as part of a cocktail of repurposed drugs for early treatment of Covid-19, the FDA issued a warning: “You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y’all. Stop it.”

Long-Shot Candidates Raising More Money Than Ever
August 26, 2021 at 8:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 16 Comments

Geoffrey Skelley: “Among non-incumbent candidates running for the House in 2022, the top fundraiser is a Democrat with no political experience running in a deep-red seat: Democrat Marcus Flowers has raised over $2 million in his bid to unseat controversial Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene in Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, which is a whopping 55 percentage points more Republican than the country as a whole.”

“Flowers’s windfall might seem strange given the long odds he — or any Democrat — faces in defeating Greene, but it also reflects a growing trend wherein candidates with little hope of winning still achieve eye-popping fundraising hauls. Based on political science research and an analysis of congressional fundraising, it’s clear that these candidates are the beneficiaries of two larger trends in American politics: a strong antipathy for the opposing party and the ease with which someone can now donate to a campaign on the internet.”

The Real Winner of the Afghan War Is Pakistan
August 26, 2021 at 6:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

New York Times: “Just days after the Taliban took Kabul, their flag was flying high above a central mosque in Pakistan’s capital. It was an in-your-face gesture intended to spite the defeated Americans. But it was also a sign of the real victors in the 20-year Afghan war.

“Pakistan was ostensibly America’s partner in the war against Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Its military won tens of billions of dollars in American aid over the last two decades, even as Washington acknowledged that much of the money disappeared into unaccounted sinkholes.

“But it was a relationship riven by duplicity and divided interests from its very start after 9/11. Not least, the Afghan Taliban the Americans were fighting are, in large part, a creation of Pakistan’s intelligence service, the I.S.I., which through the course of the war nurtured and protected Taliban assets inside Pakistan.”
