The tale of two stories (in other words, someone is lying)

EXCLUSIVE: Internal Numbers Show White House Poised To Leave Several Thousand Americans Behind Enemy Lines In Afghanistan
Roughly 3,800 Americans have been evacuated from Afghanistan since July 29, with an estimated 8,000 remaining in the country, an official with direct knowledge of the situation told the Daily Caller on Tuesday. The official told the Caller that it seems “doubtful we are going to bring in 8,000 more Americans” between now and the Aug. 31 deadline.
US says about 1,500 citizens remain in Afghanistan
Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday said about 1,500 Americans remain in Afghanistan and are waiting to be evacuated. Blinken said the U.S. has evacuated 82,300 people, including 4,500 people with U.S. passports, since Aug. 14, the day before the Taliban took Kabul and completed its takeover of Afghanistan.

Meanwhile the US Embassy is still telling Americans to stay away from the airport citing terror threats and such.

So someone here is not telling the truth, and I suspect that it is the Secretary of State in this situation. While the difference between saying 3800 Americans have been evacuated versus 4500 is fairly close considering the timing, the difference between how many citizens are actually there is not reconcilable. Even the the leaked internal numbers (12,000 citizens or so) seem to be underestimating what was originally believed to be there, which was 15,000 at minimum.

But after being told since the beginning of this fiasco that we had 15,000 or more Americans to be evacuated, it seems a rather unseemly slap in the face for a high cabinet member to step up in front of Americans and suggest that we actually only had 6000 Americans (not two or three times that) in Afghanistan. My suspicion is that they have identified another 1500 Americans that they expect to have evacuated by the deadline and that they are glossing over the fact that there are others there that they have not made any arrangements with.

Time will certainly tell if we leave Americans behind and how many we do. But I get a sense that the Biden White House will continue to play Baghdad Bob and simply continue to provide flat out lies to the public when discussing Afghanistan or they will simply attempt to ignore the subject all together. I don't believe we can trust them right now to tell the factual truth.

Shadi Hamid is a contributing writer at The Atlantic, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and a founding editor of Wisdom of Crowds. He is the author of Islamic Exceptionalism: How the Struggle Over Islam Is Reshaping the World and Temptations of Power.

The united states never understood Afghanistan. American planners thought they knew what the country needed, which was not quite the same as what its people wanted. American policy was guided by fantasies; chief among them was the idea that the Taliban could be eliminated and that an entire culture could be transformed in the process.

In an ideal world, the Taliban wouldn’t exist. But it does exist, and it will exist. Western observers always struggle to understand how groups as ruthless as the Taliban gain legitimacy and popular support. Surely Afghans remember the terror of Taliban rule in the 1990s, when women were whipped if they ventured outside without a burka and adulterers were stoned to death in soccer stadiums. How could those dark days be forgotten?

America saw the Taliban as plainly evil. To deem a group evil is to cast it outside of time and history. But this is a privileged view. Living in a democracy with basic security allows citizens to set their sights higher. They will be disappointed with even a relatively good government precisely because they expect more from it. In failed states and in the midst of civil war, however, the fundamental questions are ones of order and disorder, and how to have more of the former and less of the latter.

The Taliban knew this. After its fall from power in 2001, the group was weak, reeling from devastating air strikes targeting its leaders. But in recent years, it has been gaining ground and establishing deeper roots in local communities. The Taliban was brutal. At the same time, it often provided better governance than the distant and corrupt Afghan central government. Doing a little went a long way.

Afghanistan’s U.S.-backed government didn’t fail just because of the Taliban. It was hobbled from the start by America’s blind spots and biases. The United States saw a strong, centralized authority as the answer to Afghanistan’s problems and backed a constitution that invested the president with sweeping powers.

Biden and every single American have to be very aware

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An explosion went off on Thursday outside the Kabul airport, where thousands of people have gathered to try to flee the country on Western airlift since the Taliban seized power earlier this month. The Pentagon confirmed the blast, with no immediate word on casualties.

Western nations had warned of a possible attack on Kabul’s airport in the waning days of the massive evacuation efforts.

Several countries urged people to avoid the airport, where an official said there was a threat of a suicide bombing. But just days — or even hours for some nations — before the evacuation effort ends, few appeared to heed the call.

Over the last week, the airport has been the scene of some of the most searing images of the chaotic end of America's longest war and the Taliban's takeover, as flight after flight took off carrying those who fear a return to the militants' brutal rule.

Already, some countries have ended their evacuations and begun to withdraw their soldiers and diplomats, signaling the beginning of the end of one of history's largest airlifts. The Taliban have so far honored a pledge not to attack Western forces during the evacuation, but insist the foreign troops must be out by America's self-imposed deadline of Aug. 31.

BREAKING NEWS:
Pentagon: Explosion reported outside Kabul airport amid evacuations

Pentagon Confirms ‘Explosion’ Outside Kabul Airport After Terror Threat Warning
Jamie Ross
Thu, August 26, 2021, 8:49 AM·1 min read

An explosion has rocked the international airport in Kabul just hours after the U.S. military warned of an imminent terror threat.

Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby announced in a tweet Thursday: “We can confirm an explosion outside Kabul airport. Casualties are unclear at this time. We will provide additional details when we can.”

One unnamed U.S. military official told The New York Times that the explosion took place at the main entrance to the airport, known as the Abbey Gate. Three unnamed U.S. officials told CNN that it appears to have been caused by a suicide bomber. The White House confirmed President Joe Biden has been briefed about the ongoing incident.

The explosion happened shortly after U.S. officials urged people to stay away from the airport after they received intelligence suggesting that an attack from an Afghan branch of Islamic State was imminent.

An advisory from the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan urged American citizens who were at the airport to “leave immediately” on Wednesday due to “security threats.”

Hamid Karzai International Airport is where thousands of evacuees have flocked to in the hope of fleeing from Taliban rule.

Even CNN commentators

(CNN)A grave and specific ISIS terror threat is hanging over the frantic endgame of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan with time fast running out to rescue up to 1,500 Americans and the fate of fleeing Afghans looking darker by the hour.

President Joe Biden is so far sticking to his Tuesday deadline for the final exit from a 20-year war in Afghanistan, after an initially chaotic drawdown that has since evolved into a mammoth and daring airlift of more than 95,700 people out of Kabul -- with more than 13,400 people evacuated in the last 24 hours on US and coalition flights, according to the White House.

But in an alarming sign of the deteriorating security environment, there was an explosion at the Kabul airport on Thursday, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby confirmed. One US official said there are injuries amongst the Afghans, but there is no information yet on any US injuries.

Earlier Thursday local time, US diplomats in Kabul suddenly warned American citizens to "immediately" leave several gates into the airport, citing security threats.

The warning came hours after a US defense official had told CNN that officials were alarmed by a "very specific threat stream" about the ISIS affiliate in Afghanistan, which planned to attack crowds outside the airfield.

Inside, thousands of troops are braving testing conditions and intense heat to fill cargo aircraft with US citizens and Afghans who helped American troops and officials and fear gruesome punishment by the Taliban.

The question now is how long the Pentagon will give the evacuation operation before it transitions to a mission to extract thousands of troops and materiel, which could take several days and curtail the departures of noncombatants.

Sources tell Politico — and the Pentagon confirms — that there has been a large explosion at Abbey gate at the Kabul airport.

Kabul airport was hit by an explosion Thursday, throwing evacuation efforts into more turmoil days before President Joe Biden's deadline for all U.S. forces to withdraw from the country.

“We can confirm that the explosion near the Abbey Gate of the Kabul airport has resulted in an unknown number of casualties,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said on Twitter.

Biden was briefed on the blast.

While it was immediately unclear who or what was behind the explosion, two U.S. intelligence officials said the assumption is that the suspected IED attack was caused by the Islamic State group's Afghan affiliate, ISIS-K.

In an alert issued after the blast on Thursday, the U.S. Embassy in Kabul again urged Americans not to travel to the area.

"There has been a large explosion at the airport, and there are reports of gunfire. U.S. citizens should avoid traveling to the airport and avoid airport gates at this time," it said.

U.K. Armed Forces Minister James Heappey told NBC News’ U.K. partner Sky News earlier Thursday that an "imminent, lethal attack" could happen at Kabul airport in a matter of hours.

Australia also urged its citizens to stay away from the airport, warning of a "very high threat of a terrorist attack" at the airport.

Kabul airport has been a flashpoint for chaotic scenes and security fears since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan's capital Aug.15.

Security threat leads to new chaos at Kabul airport

A senior Taliban commander said Thursday that they had issued an alert to their top leadership on the threat posed by ISIS-K.

The group arrested an ISIS terrorist at the airport a few days ago who told them about the network and their plans, he said, speaking on condition of anonymity and without elaborating.

The group's fighters are in control of the roads and multiple checkpoints leading to the airport, where they have used force to control crowds since seizing control.

There were concerns about the lack of a formal screening process and the possibility of a suicide bomber mixing in with the thousands desperately waiting for a chance to escape.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said his country had been warned about just that kind of attack.

“We received information at the military level from the United States, but also from other countries, that there were indications that there was a threat of suicide attacks on the mass of people,” he said.
