The COVID-19 vaccines' ability to keep people out of the hospital appears to be dropping slightly, particularly for those 75 and older, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Monday during an advisory panel. The latest CDC analysis estimates that the ability of the COVID vaccines to keep a person out of the hospital is now between 75% to 95%.
Just 61.2% of Americans ages 12 and up are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
So this quickly went from something that was nearly foolproof (like Biden's plan) to something that is 75-95 percent successful in keeping you out of the hospital. Keeping in mind that the vast majority of even the unvaccinated do not go to the Hospital and the fatality rates are still in the low tenths of a percent among those who get it. So those numbers are hard to actually read.
If they are saying that in comparison to an unvaccinated person, it would between 75-95 percent of those hospitalizations (which I suspect it means) - then it's still a wise choice to take the vaccination. But if that number becomes closer to 75% than 95% and continues to drop, then the vaccine will not have lived up to the promises.
Lastly, the article states that "just" 61.2% of the population eligible for the vaccine are vaccinated. That is actually not that far off from the original 70% that Dr Fauci determined would bring us herd immunity. Perhaps the last 8.8% will really make all the difference in the world, but I suspect once we get to 70% - they will ask for 80% - then they will ask for 90% - etc... etc... etc...

My wife and I have never been together in Portland.
And it is true that we had dinner on the night before the lockdowns because we did not know how long things would last. I also recall having several conversations with retailers around Pikes place who had differing opinions on the idea that everything was getting locked down.
Some were on board and some were not. The entire United States at the time had under 100 nationally. Some thought this was going to be the next black plague while others were more concerned that they would be driven out of business over nothing.
As you should know, my wife (who you continue to forget is even Asian) has preexisting conditions and there is probably nobody I know who has taken this more seriously. She masks, she socially distances, she was one of the first in line to get the vaccination and I was shortly behind in getting my vaccination.

Other than our entire country locked down for months, wore masks for months, and over 60% of our adult population has been vaccinated and 650,000 people died anyways. So it doesn't seem like we can exactly be self congratulatory over how well our response has been and the jury should still be out on how effective all of our restrictions have been. Maybe twice as many people would have died or maybe (like Sweden) we would be better off "now" had we not done what we did then.

Sweden (with a population of around 12 million) has had 22 deaths so far in August. That would be less than one death a day.
