On the road again...

Been busy the past few months. But none busier than the past few days. Tomorrow I have a moving company coming to take the stuff on one side of my garage to Seattle and a junk removal service to take what's on the other side to the dump.

After that I will be on my merry way to Seattle. Planning on dropping in on my old stomping grounds in Sioux Falls, SD for the first leg of the journey. Then will head off to Billings Montana. Then I may or may not make one more stop. It will largely depend on how my 13 year old lab is doing with the long drives.

So after tonight I will no longer be a Minnesota resident.

YouGov/Economist, first poll that has Biden's approval under 40%. (approve/disapprove)

Overall: 39/50
Men: 36/53
Women: 42/46
White men no degree: 28/61
White women w/ degree: 53/42
Black: 65/26
Hispanic: 41/36
Registered Voters: 43/53
Dems: 77/15
GOP: 9/89
Indie: 35/56

The only demographic that is holding up Biden is white women with a degree. (No doubt the great majority are teachers) He's struggling in every other demographic.

The only good news for the Democrats are the midterms 18 months away. The bad news is what failure the Biden administration will commit in the interim.

Breaking news

Sept 9 (Reuters) - Two hundred Americans and other foreigners who remain in Afghanistan are set to depart the war-ravaged country on charter flights from Kabul on Thursday after the new Taliban government agreed to their evacuation, a U.S. official said.

The departures will be among the first international flights to take off from Kabul airport since the Islamist militia seized the capital in mid-August, triggering the chaotic U.S.-led evacuation of 124,000 foreigners and at-risk Afghans.

The move comes two days after the Taliban announced an interim government made up mainly of ethnic Pashtun men including wanted terror suspects and Islamist hardliners, dashing international hopes for a more moderate administration.

Sleepy Joe Biden is a better negotiator than the deal maker Trump.

KABUL—Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities are allowing some 200 Americans and other foreign citizens to leave the country on a flight to Qatar scheduled for Thursday, the first such departure by air since U.S. forces withdrew last month, Qatari and American officials said.

The expected flight by a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 would mark the resumption of international passenger operations at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport, and is expected to be followed by daily air links to foreign countries, a senior Qatari official said.

As Florida appears to be turning the corner from a coronavirus rampage that fueled record new infections, hospitalizations and deaths, its residents and leaders are surveying the damage left from more than 7,000 deaths reported since July Fourth and the scars inflicted by feuds over masks and vaccines. New infections were averaging more than 22,000 a day in the last days of August but have fallen to about 19,000. Yet recovery could prove fleeting: Holiday weekends such as Labor Day have acted as a tinderbox for earlier outbreaks, and late summer marks the return of students to college campuses.

As of Thursday, Florida averaged 325 newly reported deaths daily in the preceding seven days, the highest since the pandemic started.

Experts attribute Florida’s high death count to its substantial population of older residents, which means even an unvaccinated minority includes hundreds of thousands of susceptible victims.

Lee's record as a military commander is not in dispute. That record made him one of the greatest military commanders in American history.

Why Biden Must Turn Focus Back to Pandemic
September 9, 2021 at 8:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Bernstein:
“Remember that Biden doesn’t need to be popular now. He needs to be popular next summer and fall for Democrats to do well in the 2022 midterm elections, and he needs to be popular in the summer and fall of 2024 for the Democrats to win the next presidential election. His popularity depends on a successful effort against the pandemic and a booming economy. At least more than on anything else.”

Former Trump aide Stephanie Grisham has quietly written a top-secret memoir of her four years in Donald Trump’s White House, and a publishing source says she’ll reveal “surprising new scandals,” Axios reports.

Said one former West Wing colleague:
“When I heard this, all I could think about was Stephanie surrounded by a lake of gasoline, striking a match with a grin on her face.”

Said another:
“Grisham knows where all the bodies are buried because she buried a lot of them herself.”

President Trump released a statement on the taking down of the statue of the great General Robert E. Lee.

President Trump shared today on the taking down of the statue of Robert E. Lee’s

Just watched as a massive crane took down the magnificent and very famous statue of “Robert E. Lee On His Horse” in Richmond, Virginia. It has long been recognized as a beautiful piece of bronze sculpture. To add insult to injury, those who support this “taking” now plan to cut it into three pieces, and throw this work of art into storage prior to its complete desecration.

Robert E. Lee is considered by many Generals to be the greatest strategist of them all. President Lincoln wanted him to command the North, in which case the war would have been over in one day. Robert E. Lee instead chose the other side because of his great love of Virginia, and except for Gettysburg, would have won the war. He should be remembered as perhaps the greatest unifying force after the war was over, ardent in his resolve to bring the North and South together through many means of reconciliation and imploring his soldiers to do their duty in becoming good citizens of this country.

Our culture is being destroyed and our history and heritage, both good and bad, are being extinguished by the Radical Left, and we can’t let that happen! If only we had Robert E. Lee to command our troops in Afghanistan, that disaster would have ended in a complete and total victory many years ago. What an embarrassment we are suffering because we don’t have the genius of a Robert E. Lee!

The communists on the left must be stopped.  General Robert E. Lee was multiples the man any soy boy is who wants Lee’s statue’s down.  America’s history is rich and free

Why Democrats Are Giddy Over Trump’s Endorsements
September 9, 2021 at 8:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Punchbowl News:
“Former President Donald Trump, who is still the leader of the Republican Party, is making his mark on 2022. To date, Trump has issued 37 endorsements for races up and down the ballot. These include ‘revenge endorsements’ against pro-impeachment Republicans; signs of support to safe Senate incumbents; potentially decisive picks in competitive swing-state primaries; and even boosts to the most local of candidates.

“But one constant across the varied field of Trump endorsements? A colorful history and propensity for scandal — much like the former president himself.”

Fauci Says We’re Not Close to Ending Pandemic

Dr. Anthony Fauci told Axios that Americans are now getting infected with COVID-19 at 10 times the rate needed to end the pandemic, which will persist until more people get vaccinated.

Said Fauci:
“The endgame is to suppress the virus.
Right now, we’re still in pandemic mode, because we have 160,000 new infections a day.
That’s not even modestly good control… which means it’s a public health threat.”

He added:
“In a country of our size, you can’t be hanging around and having 100,000 infections a day.
You’ve got to get well below 10,000 before you start feeling comfortable.”

WHO SHOULD WE REALLY BLAME?

THE FOREIGN POLICY ELITES WHO HAVE MISLED BOTH OUR POLITICAL PARTIES FOR DECADES.

War invariably falls hardest on common people, but until recent decades, senior officials were often held to account for failure. Statesmen and generals might pay for disaster with exile or even execution; at a minimum, they were forced to leave office in disgrace. Modern warfare is often harsher for soldiers and civilians alike but is somehow easier for elites. After Vietnam, a disgraced figure such as Defense Secretary Robert McNamara could go on an apology tour and reclaim some measure of respectability. Today, there is no accountability at all.

Foreign policy elites with careers unblemished by success live in comfort far from Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Yemen, and die in their beds while thousands of Marines and soldiers followed such American Bourbons (elites) to humiliating defeat, only to end up in humble graves in parts of America as alien to ruling elites as Afghanistan is to troops from Appalachia. Thousands more live with physical and psychological wounds. It is long since time to hold the foreign policy elites and generals who failed America to account.

Historian Charles Norris Cochrane described the Peloponnesian War as, “a terrifying record of human energy and resources dissipated to no profitable end.” Future historians may give a similar assessment of the last two decades of U.S. failure in the Middle East.

Where did the United States go wrong? Much has been written and much more will be written, but a few general trends emerge. First, the enemy, “terror,” was an abstraction, and it’s impossible to wage war on an abstraction.

Second, we didn’t understand the nature of Afghanistan—or of Iraq, or Syria, or Libya. America was successful at rebuilding post-tribal, modern societies like Germany and Japan, but not premodern societies. No one thought to ask whether the democratic institutions that emerge in high-trust societies can be replicated in societies with traditions of religious and ideological extremism, literacy rates below one-third, or consanguineous marriage rates of nearly fifty percent—a strong indicator of low social trust.

Third, we possessed neither concrete objectives, nor a coherent strategy, nor a definite timeline. Essentially tactical approaches like counterinsurgency and counterterrorism served as substitutes for strategy, and few elites took notice. Then, as is often the case in the region, militaries that cohere around a religious identity proved stronger than those that cohere around a national identity. Perhaps above all, there was a misplaced confidence in the tools of the state and of statecraft. As many have noted, America is itself in need of nation-building and is in no position to lecture others.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

The hubris of U.S. foreign policy elites over the past twenty years followed in large part from the misapplication of the lessons of World War II to the Global War on Terror. America was the only real victor of World War II, while the other great powers were devastated. So, we inferred that war could solve more problems than it actually can. Nevertheless, the last two decades of failed policy in the Middle East have produced several victors: China and Russia, Iran, and perhaps also Turkey. And arguably the Taliban, and even Al Qaeda and its outgrowths.

The reckoning for U.S. foreign policy elites—politicians, policymakers, generals, diplomats, think tanks that had access and influence—is long overdue. It’s time for a painstaking inquiry into what went wrong to ensure that it doesn’t happen again in the era of great power competition. One model for accountability could be the Church Committee hearings of 1975, which exposed abuses by the intelligence community and federal law enforcement that so shocked Americans that some agencies were nearly shut down altogether. Americans today would likely be similarly outraged as they learn that senior officials were aware not only of the impossibility of victory but also of rampant bacha bazi (pedophilia), bribery, and corruption, and other scandalous conduct in Afghanistan.

In 1992, U.S. Army General Norman Schwarzkopf wrote, “I am certain that had we taken all of Iraq, we would have been like the dinosaur in the tar pit—we would still be there, and we, not the United Nations, would be bearing the costs of that occupation.” There will be other tar pits to avoid in the decades ahead. Terrorist attacks will occur, terrorists may flourish, but the United States must remain focused on national security priorities, starting with great power competition.

For its part, the Biden administration and its glittering Ivy League elites now stand over the wreckage of the failure in Afghanistan like the French nobles at Agincourt. The present humiliation should be borne by foreign policy elites, the generals, the best and the brightest, not by the American people—and especially not by those who served, though they doubtless feel it more viscerally than the hawkish elites who counseled war.

The Afghanistan failure has a thousand fathers. The hubris, naΓ―ve optimism, and overextension that has long been plain to most Americans have yet to be fully grasped by some foreign policy elites. It is these elites, rather than the heroes who served there, who should go cap-in-hand and live the rest of their days as base panders—in shame, and eternal shame.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar announced Thursday that she has been treated for breast cancer that was found in February and the treatment “went well.”

Klobuchar, 61, tweeted that the cancer was detected during a routine mammogram, and eventually she had a lumpectomy to remove the cancer. She said she completed radiation treatment in May, and a checkup in August found she was doing well.

Klobuchar is early in her third term. She was first elected in 2006 and easily won reelection twice against little-known opponents.

For Democrats, Klobuchar's health update was a fresh reminder of their fragile hold on the Senate, which they control by a single vote. Klobuchar's announcement made no explicit statement on her future, but said the cancer “gave me renewed purpose to my work.”

Klobuchar said her cancer was stage 1A, meaning it had not spread beyond the breast. She said she felt fortunate to have caught it early because she had delayed her mammogram because of the pandemic. She urged Americans not to delay health screenings.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden will seek to ramp up pressure on the unvaccinated by announcing additional federal vaccine mandates, calling for the private sector to do the same, and pushing for increased testing in schools on Thursday as the season he billed as a “summer of freedom” ends with thousands of unvaccinated Americans dying from Covid-19 every week.

Biden is expected to announce that all federal executive branch workers will face a vaccine requirement, and plans to say that standard should be extended to employees of contractors that do business with the federal government, according to a person familiar with the plans. The Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Indian Health Service, and the National Institute of Health have already said they will require vaccinations for their 2.5 million employees.

Biden had previously given federal workers the choice of undergoing regular testing instead of getting vaccinated, but that testing opt-out will no longer be an option.

White House officials said Biden is also expected to continue encouraging employers and local governments to put vaccine mandates in place along with mask requirements and discuss efforts to get boosters to those who are vaccinated, an effort the administration plans to start Sept. 20.

Filings for jobless benefits last week fell and reached a fresh pandemic low, extending a downward trend as employers hold onto workers despite the Delta variant of Covid-19.

Initial unemployment claims, a proxy for layoffs, moved lower in the week ended Sept. 4 to 310,000 from a slightly upwardly revised 345,000 the prior week, the Labor Department reported Thursday. The four-week moving average, which smooths out weekly volatility in the data, fell to 339,500, also a pandemic low.

Claims have trended lower since mid-July, a sign employers are holding on to workers despite a rise in coronavirus cases tied to the spread of the Delta variant in many parts of the U.S. and weaker-than-expected job growth in August.

President Joe Biden is set to speak to the nation Thursday afternoon to lay out what the White House said is a new six-part strategy to combat the delta variant, but it was unclear whether he would call for more vaccination mandates in the private sector and for the nation's schools.

A source familiar with the president's plans told ABC News that Biden will announce an executive order that will "require all federal executive branch workers to be vaccinated," as well as a second order that will direct that that standard also be applied to employees of contractors working with the federal government.

As part of this effort, the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Indian Health Service, and the National Institutes of Health will complete implementation of their previously announced vaccination requirements that cover 2.5 million people, the source said.

This is an escalation of the president's action in July calling for federal workers to attest to their vaccination status and submit to mitigation efforts if they are not vaccinated, such as mask usage and regular testing.

If you work for a company that works with the federal government, you have to get injections.

Speaking of brainwashing from The American Greatest. This is your talking points!

Never before in human history has a global pandemic resulted in the dismemberment of first-world economies, highly divisive universal vaccine and mask mandates, education-stunting school shutdowns, and the isolation of entire societies to the point of extreme mental health damage.

Throughout all this, the media have remained incurious as to how this historic misery happened.

Anyone with half a brain cell already knew that a new virus that started within a stone's throw of a biosafety level 4 laboratory in an authoritarian nation likely either leaked or was released from that laboratory.  But acknowledging this obvious fact immediately led to expulsion from "polite" society, or at least from social media.

But the fact that Saint Fauci is the director of an organization, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, that provided U.S. funding on "gain of function" research to the tune of nearly $600,000 on several types of coronaviruses at the very lab where the leak happened may well be the biggest story of the last fifty years.

Gain of function is shorthand for research that adds a new function to an existing virus, which in this case is the rather inconvenient function of infecting humans.  We were literally funding research by our biggest geopolitical rival on how to turn a harmless virus to humans into one that could wreak chaos in human populations.  Mission accomplished.

Team Vaxpocalypse has lost the plot
I almost feel bad Megan Ranney, MD MPH; the incoherence and cognitive dissonance on display here is something very special

This week, Dr. Ranney - one of the leading public health voices (Gawd help us) on Covid policy - offered readers at CNN.com her thoughts on where we are now and what happens next.

I will do my best to translate this majestic piece of cognitive dissonance, Faulkner-style:

the vaccines are saving everyone and you should be superhappy you got yours which is why infections are through the roof but hospitalizations aren't but oh wait they are and deaths too but if we just vaccinate children, who are KNOWN not to be at risk from OR SPREAD the virus it would all be okay but we will never get back to normal but science will save us if we just trust us also make sure you open the windows because that’s the only thing that actually works -

We must be free not because we claim freedom, but because we practice it.

(Sorry, that last line is ACTUALLY Faulkner. Snuck in there somehow.)

Only thing she forgot to mention: get ready for a booster even though it probably won't work and maybe another booster after that and who knows what’s next but trust us even though we’ve been wrong about oh pretty much everything we’ve told you since last March -

SOURCE: https://www.cnn.com/2021/09/07/opinions/covid-19-good-and-bad-news-ranney/index.html

Sorry. Run-on sentences, another symptom of long Covid! I better get checked.

So, yeah, it’s all a joke, only -

All-cause-mortality is running at least 10% above normal in England and Scotland, the only places we have decent near-real-time data. This has been a trend for two months now in England, longer in Scotland. Both countries are 80%+ fully vaccinated for adults. Covid is through the roof both places too.

I don’t know why. Truly. Do the health authorities? Because it would be nice if they’d tell us. Or at least acknowledge the reality and investigate it.

After a statue of Robert E. Lee was removed from Richmond, Virginia, Donald J. Trump offered to buy the monument for his bedroom at Mar-a-Lago.

“It’s a beautiful statue of a beautiful man, and, quite frankly, there’s no one I’d rather wake up to every morning,” he said.

Stating that the removal of the statue “should never have been allowed to happen in this country,” Trump said that he had offered Virginia a statue of himself in return.

“I can’t think of a better person to take Robert E. Lee’s place than Trump,” he said. “I’ll even throw in free shipping, like that loser Bezos.”

Asked why he had decided to place the Civil War statue in his bedroom, Trump said that his wife, Melania, had asked him to put it someplace where she wouldn’t see it. So he said it will go into the bathroom with the golden toilet.

It's just another example of oppression to CRT.
Millions of Americans trace their lineage to men who fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy. Contrary to modern historical revisionism—which is nothing more than a cudgel with which to beat contemporary political rivals—those who enlisted to fight in the South had many reasons to do so.

In order to maintain the social cohesion that the Union understood was necessary, some kind of honor amongst the descendants of former combatants must be maintained. We all condemn the South’s cause, but destroying this delicate balance of comity will have negative consequences.

Just because someone in my family history faught for the Confederate States doesn't mean that I will not become a communist.

This story might be pretty interesting!

Stephanie Grisham has quietly written a top-secret memoir of her four years in Donald Trump's White House, and a publishing source says she'll reveal "surprising new scandals."

What to watch: The book — "I'll Take Your Questions Now: What I Saw in The Trump White House" — will be published Oct. 5 by Harper Collins.

A former West Wing colleague of Grisham's tells Axios: "When I heard this, all I could think about was Stephanie surrounded by a lake of gasoline, striking a match with a grin on her face."

A source close to the publication told Axios: "Grisham knows where all the bodies are buried because she buried a lot of them herself."

The source says Grisham "has receipts ... she was a press person and it was her job to make sure she knew what was happening."

Why it matters: Grisham is the only person to have served as a top aide to both President Trump (White House press secretary and communications direct0r) and first lady Melania Trump (chief of staff).

She knows the family well and will shed new light on their dynamics with her first-person account, the sources said.

Between the lines: Melania Trump guarded her privacy intensely and trusted almost nobody during her time as first lady. Grisham, as her chief of staff, was one of the very few allowed into her inner sanctum.

She saw another side of the Trumps — in the residence — that most staffers never got to see.

Behind the scenes: Until now, only a handful of people knew of the book's existence. Grisham has deliberately kept a low profile since she resigned on Jan. 6.

The book is heavily embargoed, with code names used for the project. And there's been a dummy Amazon link.

Grisham's former West Wing colleague tells Swan: "There isn’t enough water on earth to contain the fire she could set to all of Trump world, including parts like the first lady’s orbit, which not many people are in a position to illuminate."

"It's hard to articulate how much anxiety this is going to cause."

The Real Biden Presidency Emerges

September 9, 2021 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 115 Comments

Rich Lowry: “The best case for Biden was that he could ride in the slipstream of good economic growth and a receding pandemic, beaten back by the vaccines that began to be administered before Biden took office. Instead, the labor market is still rocky and the Delta variant has surged, leading to headlines about overstretched health care systems that most people assumed that we’d left behind in the spring of 2020.”

“With his honeymoon gone, with Trump less of a factor, with economic conditions and the state of the virus not as favorable as expected, Biden had been stripped down to a more natural level of support and sliding in the polls since around June…”

“Privately, Democrats must know that his performances at his Afghanistan press conferences weren’t reassuring, let alone commanding. The problem Biden has is that any act of incompetence will, fairly or not, raise questions about his age, even if he would have done exactly the same thing at 38 that he he’s done now at 78.”

Bret Stephens: Another failed presidency at hand.

WASHINGTON —President Joe Biden will announce sweeping new vaccine mandates designed to ramp up pressure on the unvaccinated, putting in place additional mandates for federal workers and health care providers and calling for the private sector to do the same.

Biden is expected to announce that all health care facilities must have their staff fully vaccinated in order to be reimbursed by Medicare and Medicaid, funds that health care providers are heavily dependent on, according to people familiar with the plan. As of July, 27 percent of healthcare workers were unvaccinated, according to a study by the Covid States Project. There are 22 million workers in the health care industry, accounting for 14 percent of all U.S. workers, according to the Census Bureau.

Biden is also expected to sign an executive order requiring all federal executive branch workers to be vaccinated, and a second executive order that says that standard should be extended to employees of contractors that do business with the federal government, according to a person familiar with the plans. Biden had given federal workers the choice of undergoing regular testing instead of getting vaccinated, but that testing opt-out will no longer be an option.

Biden’s Covid reset comes as the rapidly spreading delta variant threatens to stall the country’s economic rebound and derail efforts to return students to the classroom. Just weeks into the return to school tens of thousands of students and staff have had to isolate themselves following school outbreaks, and the administration attributed August’s disappointing jobs numbers to the variant as consumer confidence falls.

Biden’s approval rating for his handling of the coronavirus outbreak has steadily decreased over the summer from 63 percent at the end of June to 53 percent this week, according to the FiveThirtyEight polling average. He’s also seen a drop in his wider approval rating, which slid 6 points since July to just 43 percent, in an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll released last week.

He seems to understand that he has to do something different things to improve his approval ratings.

Don't know what any leader can do about that reality. But if it wasn't for DeSantis programs and leadership the death and hospitalization rates would be far greater.
Pure speculation and wish management on your part cramps....

Not speculation. We see what happens to the elderly infected with COVID when bad policy and failed leadership. Just see New York where the elderly was ignored and outright killed.

From the beginning DeSantis had targeted the elderly for protection from COVID. They were the ones who were giving priority when the vaccine came. Now DeSantis is leading the country in setting up monochromal antibody therapy centers.

What DeSantis is not leading in is the voodoo science that convinces people mask actually work when their is no real scientific evidence it does. He is not forcing anyone to wear a piece of cloth, close a business, lose a job, end your freedom to peacefully assemble either to protest plain just have fun socializing.

Biden made just about the worst speech of his presidency, alienating just about everybody.

He made the unvaccinated sympathetic. His Il Duce style didn't charm anybody.

James never commented on the horrific poll for Biden near the top of the thread. He's trying to memory hole Afghanistan.

But just wait on his great new programs and speech for COVID-19. Opps!

And I didn't even mention the horrible economy that occurred on Biden's watch.
