So the outward cost of the reconciliation package is generally thought of to be 3.5 trillion in new spending. Democrats claim to have a basic roadmap of sorts to pay for it, but have not provided the least bit of details (other than the ever-popular rhetorical tax the rich and corporations mantra). This approach has never been successful and spending packages less than ten percent of this Build Back Better plan have failed to be covered by any increase in taxes on the rich. Reality is that you could increase the revenue from payroll taxes by 10% (across the board) and double the amount of money raised by corporations for the next decade and you still would likely fall short of what is needed to pay for the plan. Yet, they demand (laughably) that the true cost will be zero.
Meanwhile the Committee for Responsible Federal Budget has gone through the bill and believes the true cost to be upwards of 5.5 trillion over the next decade and that approximately 5 trillion of that would lead to a permanent cost of 500 billion per year forever.
Given our current non-defense discretionary spending budget is approximately 900 billion per year, that would equate to a permanent increase of approximately 56% to our spending budget. Can anyone imagine just taking your household spending costs and multiplying them by 1.56 and then pretending that finding the means to pay for that is not a big deal? Basically that is what the Biden Administration and Democrats are doing here.
They believe that we will need to borrow at least a trillion and that no less than three trillion will be added to the national debt just within the first ten years. They do not see any of this cost actually expiring (sunsetting) after the ten years is up, so the deficits and debt would conceivably continue to climb.
For those of you who are wondering; the CRFB includes Bill Clinton's former chief of staff and former Director of the office of Management and Budget (Leon Panetta), a former Republican Governor (Mitch Daniels), Barack Obama's Co-Chair of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility (Erskine Bowles), a former member of Democratic congressional leadership (Vic Fazio), an author from the Brookings institute who has been featured in WaPo (Maya MacGuineas), and Tim Penny (an Independent politician from Minnesota) to name a few. This is truly a non-partisan group of people from a variety of backgrounds and political affiliation. There is no reason for them to be providing any red meat for Biden critics.
This is an honest assessment. This honest assessment is about 5.5 trillion off from the rhetoric coming from the President and his minions in Congress. I leave it up to you individually to see whom you believe it telling the truth.

Numbers aside.
Progressives have threatened to kill the infrastructure bill if moderates in both the House and Senate don't agree to help pass reconciliation.
Because of this tension, it is not yet clear whether the House will actually pass the infrastructure bill this week — or at all. And it is not yet clear whether, when, or at what size a reconciliation bill will become law.
There was a moment in Tuesday’s Senate hearing on the withdrawal from Afghanistan when it became clear why President Joe Biden decided to get the troops out of there as quickly as possible.
It came when Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, explained why he and the other chiefs—the top officers of the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines—all agreed that we needed to pull out by Aug. 31. The Doha agreement, which President Donald Trump had signed with the Taliban in early 2020 (with no participation by the Afghan government), required a total withdrawal of foreign forces. If U.S. troops had stayed beyond August, Milley said, the Taliban would have resumed the fighting, and, in order to stave off the attacks, “we would have needed 30,000 troops” and would have suffered “many casualties.”
And yet, as Milley also testified on Tuesday, he, the chiefs, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, and other military officers advised Biden to keep 2,500 U.S. troops in Afghanistan beyond the Aug. 31 deadline. The difference is that those troops wouldn’t be attached to any “military mission.” Instead, they would “transition” to a “diplomatic mission.”
However, it is extremely unlikely that the Taliban would have observed the semantic distinction. In their eyes, 2,500 U.S. troops would be seen as 2,500 U.S. troops, regardless of whether their mission was officially said to be “military” or “diplomatic.” Therefore, the Taliban would resume fighting, as Milley said they would, and Biden would then have been faced with a horrendous choice—to pull out while under attack or send in another 30,000 troops.
Biden made several missteps, some of them disastrous, in the pace and sequence of the withdrawal. Most of all, he should have pulled out all the spies, contractors, U.S. citizens, and Afghan helpers before pulling out all the troops. But on the big picture, he was right, and the generals, as they now grudgingly admit, were wrong.
Slate. Their dedication to being wrong on just about everything is admirable. It's like here, when a pathetically and chronically stupid person digs their heels in on an issue after being shown how demonstrably wrong they are.
LOL.
Biden was right, alright. That's why his approval ratings are in the fucking 30's and headed fucking SOUTH.

For the 100th time, it's not the pullout. It's how it was done. And it was historic in Its incompetent ineptness.
And Liz Cheney made as ass of herself yesterday, thanking Milley for stepping into a breach thst was not there, even by Milley own words.
Donald Trump.
Bush made the single greatest mistake in the history of our country, which was going into the Middle East. We spent trillions of dollars and millions of lives (counting both sides) and we are further away from utopia that they were looking for than we were 21 years ago when he did this. It was a terrible decision going into the Middle East, so when I hear him lecturing people, I just don’t think he has the right to do it. He was a failed president.

And to expand upon your point, what these dumb fucks are REALLY doing is expanding the spending and "paying for it" with a credit card.
There's no fucking way this inflation bomb's cost is zero and they know it. What this proves is the extent of the lies they're willing to tell to garner support for this shitpile, and the extent to which they're willing to insult the intellect of the citizenry in the process.
It has been proven time and again that the government raises the most tax revenue when the economy is allowed to FLOURISH, and not be boot-stomped with crushing taxation. It's NOT a zero-sum game and the pie can get bigger if only they would leave things the fuck alone.
Government picking winners and losers in the name of determining equal outcomes is a fools errand the democrats are dedicated to chase every single time we're stupid enough to place them in power.
One of the few times I have agreed with him.
On soars ballsless would have gone crazy.
It was a terrible decision going into the Middle East
Precisely correct.
The only things we should have sent to the ME was enough bombs and rockets to jolt the earth off it's rotational axis.
You don't ever try to export democracy to savages who worship an 11th century murderous cult.
You kill them and you deny them entry to the US.
Period.
Large swaths of the ME SHOULD be a molten glass parking lot right now. Instead, we've made savage animals a top-ten military on the planet.
Everything 'woke' turns to shit.

A friend is a cardiac nurse at a local hospital. The ER at this hospital had already ground to a halt with our Covid stupidity to date. Now if you need an ambulance and call 911 you stand a good chance of being told none are available because EMS personnel are already at the hospital stuck in a hallway trying to get dying patients INTO the ER just to be seen.

US jobless claims unexpectedly rise; Q2 GDP revised up a touch
The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week amid a surge in claims in California, according to figures released by the Labor Department on Thursday.
US initial jobless claims pushed up by 11,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level to 362,000. Economists had been expecting a decline to 335,000.

Pelosi just said that the reconciliation will succeed.
The house will vote on the infrastructure bill today.
She never brings a bill to the floor if she isn't confident it will pass.

Well no shit sherlock. Not sure he could count well enough to keep track of his strokes. But it would be funny to watch the old geezer try. He can't walk up a flight of stairs without falling down!
Remember that scene from caddyshack where the caddy is moving the old women around so she is facing in the correct direction as she swings her club going "weeeee". That would be Biden.

That's nice.
Too bad Manchin and Sinema are not members of the HOR.
You fixate on Peloshee like she's some fucking all-powerful, magical queen.
She does not possess the power you attribute to her.
And she has NO power over the US Senate.

This will be a loss for progressives. Unless the progressive screw Pelosi. That's a very real possibility.
So close I'd need a restraining order!
Well it certainly wouldn't be his first rodeo in that regard.
This is interesting: Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the budget reconciliation bill the “culmination of my service in Congress.”
Manchin just very carefully said that he will vote for the infrastructure bill. But he refused to say whether he would vote for the reconciliation process.
I suspect the Pelosi and the Democrats will pass the infrastructure bill.
Because she is the best Speaker in this generation. She will get the liberal vote today.

Considering the fact that the bill is the biggest pile of shit in the history of the nation, her description is quite precise.
Hell yes!
Most progressive piece of legislation since the new deal.
Progressives will likely cave on the Bipartisan Infrastructure bill and the Reconciliation bill will just fade away... meaning the Democrats are not the Party of Sanders or the Squad.
But those people are owned by Manchin and Sinema.
Manchin just very carefully said that he will vote for the infrastructure bill. But he refused to say whether he would vote for the reconciliation process.
Might want to read his statement on the subject. Pretty sure he didn't refuse to say anything.

The reconciliation. I'm not going to say except it is a great deal!
I had already read it before but I was watching him live and he was very excited about the infrastructure bill.
