B.1.1.529 has a spike protein that is drastically different to the one in the original bug that the vaccines are based on, according to the UK Health Security Agency, which is raising some concern about how current jabs will perform against it. South Africa’s Department of Health also said during a briefing Thursday that the variant contains several mutations associated with increased antibody resistance, which may reduce the effectiveness of current vaccines.
Every time the left acts as if Trump is somehow responsible for a worldwide pandemic that has killed over 5 million people, I am reminded of the reality that a person can be smart, but people are generally stupid. Covid came and Covid has killed. Not just in America, but across the globe. Trump was no more responsible for Covid than any other world leader, which is to say he wasn't.
The reality is that what is happening today is clearly on the current President and this President is still using the tools that were provided to him by our previous President. He still relies on Dr Fauci (installed by Trump to lead the Covid task force from the medical side) and he is heavily reliant on a vaccine that was created in record time while Trump was still President.
In other words, Biden has really not done anything new or come up with any new ideas in combating the virus. When he told everyone he had a "foolproof" plan, I guess he meant "fool based plan" because so far we have seen nothing other than excessive finger pointing and attempts to deflect blame. As his approval rating suggests, that is not much of a plan and he is having issues executing it.
We've already run across a variant here that while it is not resistant to the vaccine, it certainly makes the vaccine less effective. If people are correct about this new strain, our current vaccine will probably be largely ineffective against it. But rather than focus on a new strategy or even a new vaccine, the President and minions are pushing boosters that protect against the original strain and getting children vaccinated with a vaccine that might be next to useless within the next 6-12 months.
The DJIA is down nearly 3% because of the news of this new variant. We might not be that over the top in our reaction if we truly trusted that our crackpot Covid team would (in conjunction with our top shelf leadership at the Presidential level) would be able to handle a new strain. But does anyone actually really have any confidence? What we are doing has not been working or we would not have over 375,000 deaths on Biden's watch. We seem to have no other plan or anything else in place and I see nothing on the horizon that suggests that will change.
Just more of the same arguments from the left that everything Covid related can be blamed on Joe Rogan or the unvaccinated.

The variant, known as B.1.1.529, has a "unique constellation" of more than 30 mutations to the spike protein – the part of the virus that binds to cells to attack – which impacts transmissibility, Professor Tulio de Oliveira, director of the country's Center for Epidemic Response and Innovation, said at a briefing Thursday.
"We are concerned by the jump in evolution in this variant," de Oliveira said Thursday, adding that the "very high number of mutations is a concern for predicted immune evasion and transmissibility."
"This new variant has many, many more mutations," he added. "We can see that the variant is potentially spreading very fast. We do expect to start seeing pressure in the healthcare system in the next few days and weeks."
The variant has also been detected in Hong Kong, Botswana and Israel. Belgium confirmed its first case of the variant later Friday, an unvaccinated woman who traveled to Belgium from Egypt via Istanbul.
German biotechnology company BioNTech, which developed the widely used COMIRNATY COVID-19 vaccine with Pfizer, said that it is already studying the newly discovered variant and should know within a couple of weeks if its vaccine is effective against it.
"We expect more data from the laboratory tests in two weeks at the latest," the company said in a statement. "These data will provide more information about whether B.1.1.529 could be an escape variant that may require an adjustment of our vaccine if the variant spreads globally."
"Pfizer and BioNTech have taken actions months ago to be able to adapt the mRNA vaccine within six weeks and ship initial batches within 100 days in the event of an escape variant," the company added.
A number of nations have already banned travel to the country, with the possibility of more countries following suit – including the United States.

JOHANNESBURG—Europe recorded its first case of the fast-spreading new coronavirus variant and dozens of countries restricted travel to and from southern Africa—where it was first detected—amid concerns that it could be more contagious than previous strains and render Covid-19 vaccines less effective.
Belgian authorities said Friday that one case of the variant had been recorded in the country. The person had traveled from abroad, was unvaccinated and hadn’t been infected with Covid-19 previously, Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke said.
White House officials have been discussing imposing travel restrictions on countries in southern Africa, and are expected to meet with agency officials this afternoon to make a recommendation, people familiar with the matter said.
Experts from the World Health Organization were meeting Friday afternoon to decide whether to declare the new strain—currently known as B.1.1.529—a “variant of concern.” The WHO uses this label for virus strains that have been proven to be more contagious, lead to more serious illness or decrease the effectiveness of public-health measures, tests, treatments or vaccines.
Other variants of concern include the Delta variant that is now dominant world-wide and the Alpha variant that drove a deadly wave of infections across Europe and the U.S. last winter and spring.

While scientists say they are still figuring out the exact effects of the more than 50 mutations they have identified in the new variant, it has been driving a sharp rise in infections in South Africa over the past two weeks, albeit from very low levels. It has also been detected in Botswana and in two people quarantining in Hong Kong, one of whom had recently arrived from South Africa. Israel, one of the countries that restricted travel from southern Africa, said Friday it had identified the B.1.1.529 variant in a traveler from Malawi and was investigating whether it had also infected two others.

CNN's Brianna Keilar on Friday interviewed Dr. Anthony Fauci about the new B.1.1.529 variant of COVID-19 which has been found in South Africa, Botswana, and Hong Kong.
"A new variant of coronavirus has been discovered in South Africa and this is raising concerns," Keilar noted. "Scientists there are warning it could show immune invasion and enhanced transmissibility."
"This is obviously a very significant day as we try to look at what the risk factors are with this variant," she said. "What can you tell us about this?"
"Well, certainly there is a new variant that is now in South Africa, in the Gauteng province, that has some mutations that are raising some concern, particularly with regard to possibly transmissibility increase and possibly evasion of immune response," Fauci replied.

Federal health regulators say an experimental COVID-19 pill from Merck is effective against the virus, but they will seek input from outside experts on risks of birth defects and other potential problems during pregnancy.
The Food and Drug Administration posted its analysis of the pill ahead of a public meeting next week where academic and other experts will weigh in on its safety and effectiveness. The agency isn’t required to follow the group’s advice.
The FDA scientists said their review identified several potential risks, including possible toxicity and birth defects. Given those risks the FDA will ask its advisers whether the drug should never be given during pregnancy or whether it could be made available in certain cases.
Under that scenario, the FDA said the drug would carry warnings about risks during pregnancy, but doctors would still have the option to prescribe it in certain cases where its benefits could outweigh its risks for patients.
Given the safety concerns, FDA said Merck agreed the drug would not be used in children.
Additionally, the FDA flagged a concern that Merck's drug led to small changes in the coronavirus' signature spike protein, which it uses to penetrate human cells. Theoretically, FDA cautioned, those changes could lead to dangerous new variants.
Regulators also noted that Merck collected far less safety data overall on its drug than was gathered for other COVID-19 therapies.
FDA will ask its independent advisers to discuss all those issues and then vote on whether the drug’s overall benefits outweigh its risks.
All COVID-19 drugs currently authorized by the FDA require an injection or IV and can only be given by health professionals. If authorized, Merck’s drug would be the first that U.S. patients could take at home to ease symptoms and speed recovery. It is already authorized for emergency use in the U.K.
The meeting marks the first time regulators have publicly reviewed a new drug for COVID-19, reflecting the intense interest and scrutiny of a pill that could be soon used by millions of Americans.
The drug, molnupiravir, has been shown to significantly cut the rate of hospitalizations and deaths among people with mild-to-moderate coronavirus infections.
Merck’s drug uses a novel approach to fight COVID-19: it inserts tiny mutations into the coronavirus’ genetic code to the point that it can’t reproduce itself.
But that genetic effect has raised concerns that in rare cases the drug could cause birth defects or tumors.
Pregnant women were excluded from Merck’s study. And both women and men in the study were instructed to use contraception or abstain from sex.
For its part, Merck says results from two company studies in rodents show “molnupiravir does not cause mutations or damage to DNA in these animal models.” The company said the rodents received higher doses for longer periods of time than humans who will take the drug.
FDA reviewers also confirmed previously reported interim results from Merck that the pill cut the rate of hospitalization and death by about half among patients with early symptoms of COVID-19 who faced increased risk due to health problems.
However, on Friday morning Merck announced updated results from the same study that showed a smaller benefit from the drug.
Among more than 1,400 adults in a company study, molnupiravir reduced the combined risk of hospitalization and death by 30%, less than the 50% initially reported based on incomplete results.
Nearly 7% of patients who received Merck’s drug within five days of COVID-19 symptoms ended up in the hospital and one died. That compared to 10% of patients hospitalized who were taking the placebo and nine deaths.

BioNTech is studying the new COVID-19 variant that emerged in South Africa and said it will know in two weeks if the vaccine it developed with Pfizer is effective against it, The Financial Times reported.
The German company said it is testing the B.1.1.529 variant to determine if its vaccine would have to be reworked, noting the new variant "differs significantly from previously observed variants."
"We expect more data from the laboratory tests in two weeks at the latest. These data will provide more information about whether B.1.1.529 could be an escape variant that may require an adjustment of our vaccine if the variant spreads globally," a BioNTech spokesperson told Reuters.

Actually this has already been approved and is in use in the UK back in October.
Bigger question is why Fauci didn't include these therapeutics in Operation Warp Speed ?
Why is it still taking so long here ?
If we have very effective therapeutics and an ineffective "vaccine" (with side effects) why the need for mandates?
Why hasn't Fauci initiated any studies on anti-bodies from prior Covid infections or accepted the fact that they exist and include in his recommendations?

He speculated that early tests might have been hampered by some technical flaw that could be uncovered in the next few days. “It feels to me like part of the puzzle is missing,” he said.
It might turn out that the apparent spread of Omicron was actually just a coincidence, as has been seen with some previous variants. If a new variant happens to get swept along during a surge of cases, it will look highly contagious when it isn’t.
Even so, Dr. Hanage considered a travel lockdown to be a prudent measure that could buy governments a little time to make plans for dealing with Omicron if it lives up to the worst predictions. Health leaders could use the delay to put in stronger measures for preventing transmission or boosting vaccinations, for example. “But just doing it and then thinking it’ll be enough is not a long-term plan,” he said.
