'Almost got away with it': A leaked video's role in the Arbery verdict

NBC Universal
CHAR ADAMS
November 24, 2021, 3:57 PM
Nearly two years before a jury convicted three white men in the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery, authorities had said there was no need to arrest them.

On Wednesday, an almost all-white jury found Travis McMichael, his father, Gregory McMichael, and neighbor William "Roddie" Bryan guilty in the murder of Arbery in Georgia. But the three might never have been indicted in the first place had it not been for a leaked video that prompted calls for attention to his death.

“I don’t want to be a spoilsport, but what if that video had not come out several months later?” Michael Irvin, a teacher from the Orlando, Florida, area told NBC News outside the courthouse Wednesday. “A young Black man would have been taken from his family and community with no one held responsible. That part, I can’t ignore. So, I’m happy justice was served.”

The McMichaels and Bryan were not arrested until months after they chased Arbery in a pickup truck in Satilla Shores, their neighborhood near Brunswick, on Feb. 23, 2020. Travis McMichael shot Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man, with a shotgun at close range. Bryan filmed the fatal encounter on his cellphone. Only after video footage of the fatal shooting leaked online May 5, 2020, did authorities arrest the trio on felony murder charges.

In the video, Arbery jogs down a road as a white pickup truck blocks his path. He is shown running around the vehicle, and a shot is fired. Then, Arbery and another man appear to scuffle and two more shots are fired.

After the verdict, social media platforms lit up with comments from users who said the case wouldn’t have gone to trial at all if the video hadn’t thrust the case into the national spotlight and sparked an outcry.

“They almost got away with it,” one social media user tweeted. “It’s devastating that these guiltily verdicts feel like a miracle.”

Another person tweeted, “I’m happy Ahmaud Arbery’s killers are cooked. But never forget that this is not an example of the justice system working. Police didn’t arrest these men. Prosecutors didn’t want them charged. The video wasn’t released initially. It took outrage and pressure to make this happen.”

The defense had argued that the men thought Arbery was a burglar and were attempting to make a citizen’s arrest and they acted in self-defense. However, Travis McMichael admitted during the trial that Arbery hadn’t shown a weapon or threatened him or spoken to him at all before he shot him.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Travis McMichael was convicted of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal attempt to commit a felony. Gregory McMichael and William Bryan were found not guilty of the malice murder charge. All three face up to life in prison.

News of the killing largely remained under wraps in the weeks that followed. Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, accused Glynn County, Georgia, police and two local prosecutors of conspiring to cover up Arbery’s murder and protect the men involved in his death.

A $1 million lawsuit filed earlier this year alleges that the police department and officials with the Brunswick County District Attorney’s Office worked together to paint Arbery as a violent criminal and absolve the McMichaels and Bryan of wrongdoing. The lawsuit has been stalled amid the trial.

Just days after the shooting, Jackie Johnson, the Brunswick-area district attorney, recused herself from the case because she had worked with Gregory McMichael, a former Glynn County police officer, for decades. George Barnhill briefly took over the case. He soon recused himself but defended the actions of the McMichaels and Bryan, advising police that “he did not see grounds for the arrest of any of the individuals involved in Mr. Arbery’s death.”

Now, in a statement following the verdict, Cooper-Jones admitted that she never believed she’d see the men convicted.

“It’s been a long fight. It’s been a hard fight, but God is good,” she told reporters Wednesday. “To tell you the truth, I never saw this day back in 2020. I never thought this day would come.”

Scott, Thanksgiving is a special time to reflect on what the year has brought, what lies ahead, and a time to be grateful that from darkness there is light, hope, and progress.

That’s what this year’s Thanksgiving represents.

So many of us will be gathering with our loved ones for the first time in a long time with tables and hearts full of gratitude for everyone who made it possible.

Scientists, researchers, doctors, nurses, and pharmacists who developed and administered the vaccines and other frontline workers who kept essential services and our economy going.

Faith leaders and community leaders who counsel and comfort. Farmers, farm workers, and meat packers who risked their lives to grow, process, and pack the food on our tables. And I am especially grateful to our service members and military families for their service and sacrifice.

As we give thanks for what we have, we also keep in our hearts those who have lost so much. Those who will have an empty seat at their table this year because of this virus or another cruel twist of fate or accident. Their grief is deep and their tears still fresh. We pray for them to find strength from sorrow and purpose from pain.

Scott, there’s not a day that’s gone by during the first year of our presidency that I haven’t been grateful for the trust you placed in me and Jill and Kamala and Doug.

Because of you, we’ve made historic progress to beat this pandemic.

Because of you, we’re building our economy back better than ever.

And because of you, we’re reminded that we are a great nation because we are a good people.

For that and so much more, I am forever grateful for the trust you have placed in me.

From my family to yours, I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

Conspiracy theory on steroids.

Today the country celebrates the 400th anniversary of the first Thanksgiving holiday. Families will unite – perhaps for the first time in over a year – gather around the dinner table, eat turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pie. As this has long been a yearly custom in the country, it is also important to pay mind to the origins of the holiday.

Get home delivery of the magazine. Subscribe today!

Initially celebrated in November 1621, the Wampanoag tribe and the Pilgrims celebrated the first successful autumn harvest. Unbeknownst to the attendees at the time, they set the foundation for creating a new society.

Ad ends in 18s

Biden out of gas: Black gold in short supply

Criminals on the loose: Bad guys roaming free

The Pilgrims landing on Plymouth Rock in 1620 is one of the most pivotal moments in Western civilization. Their joint celebration with the Wampanoag in 1621 embarked them on a new project. This 1621 Project would lay the foundations for the future generations of America. Similar to the way the autumn harvest yielded an abundance of food for a celebration, the seeds planted by our Thanksgiving forefathers would bloom into a new way of thinking, acting, and governing. From the rigors of the harsh conditions of New England winters, the fruits of the labor of the 1621 Project would bear what would become perhaps the greatest harvest in the world: the United States of America.

From the humble beginnings through a clash of civilizations to the birth of a constitutional republic, the 1621 Project would change the course of humanity. It yielded a new world, a new country, and a freer kind of government. It has been a long, tough journey. It hasn't been a perfect evolution from the time of the Pilgrims and Wampanoag and there are plenty of blemishes throughout. However, what humanity often got wrong throughout its existence, the U.S. has fought to get right.

Today, many try to tear this country down by vilifying its past. They target its history and denounce it under the misnomer as a society of oppression. These enemies of freedom lambaste this country for failing to live up to the impossible standards of a nirvana that only exists in their ideologically corrupted minds. All too often, they emphasize our sins while ignoring our successes. Today, many of them even denounce the celebration of Thanksgiving as an act of racial oppression. Their objective is for the complete dissolution of all the progress made since the Pilgrims and Wampanoag tribe joined together. They want to create a form of government that we have spent centuries trying to escape from.

Today, there are many who wish to tear this government down. These people wish to eradicate our culture and customs. They attack Thanksgiving in a coordinated effort to delegitimize and discredit our history. A house divided cannot stand, and instigating internal strife is the ultimate objective for such people. Instead, we must remember the spirit of the Pilgrims and Wampanoag and come together, united, to preserve our liberties and freedoms. The U.S. may have its fair share of sins that led to many people inexplicably suffering. Yet, it is the 1621 Project that bore the fruit that resulted in a society that looked to correct all of humanity’s wrongs.

The first Thanksgiving occurred 400 years ago. We are still bearing the fruits of the labor of the Pilgrims and Wampanoag. They did not realize what they were cooking that November day, but it resulted in an entrée that would revolutionize the world. It is why we should honor those from the first Thanksgiving. It is the quintessential American holiday.

Just forget the first day when the first slaves came from Africa, on ships owned by Trump Sr.

Turkey Day Fucking Funny

Pilgrims Tried Communism

One of the more familiar stories in American history is the disastrous experiment in a communal social and economic structure in the Plymouth Colony from 1621 to 1623.  The communal lifestyle in the colony resembled a socialist society.

The colony's storehouse, houses, gardens, and other improved land were all shared.  No one could own private land or work at a private business because of their business deal with their investors.  The colonists collectively cleared and worked the land.  Many worked hard to provide for their families and lay up stores for the winter while others sloughed off, knowing they would receive equal shares from the single pot regardless of how little they worked.

Urologist: 80% of Men with E.D Don't Know About This Easy Fix (Try It Tonight)

Health & Living

Anger and resentment grew among those who did the lion's share of the work, so they became less willing to work.  As a result, the colony could not produce enough food to feed everyone.

Pilgrims Rejected Communism for Free Enterprise and Private Property

After two years of living under communism, only a few of the original Plymouth colonists were still alive.  By 1626, to avoid an extinction of the colony and provide a solution for repayment to their investors, a new system with private property rights and the right to keep one's production — free enterprise — was implemented by Governor William Bradford, one of the signers of the Mayflower Compact and the second elected governor of the colony.  Each family was assigned personal plots of farm land according to family size, and the common storehouse was abolished.  Immediately, men and women returned to the harvest fields and produced a large harvest.

Land ownership became a priority of the early settlers.  For more than 50 years, colonial villages tried to survive under the common ownership system without success.  Each village found that private ownership of the means of production was the most economically profitable and the most efficient way to accomplish the Christian goals of social peace.  Gradually, the communal system gave way to private property rights.

The concept of the family farm grew out of combining personal responsibility with private property rights.  It was the tradition of the independent small farmer that heavily influenced the political philosophy of Thomas Jefferson.  The superiority of individual responsibility over that of government about the best use of land became a fundamental principle of 18th- and 19th-century American life and the American dream.

400 Years Later, Americans Try Communism Again

It was the fierce spirit of personal responsibility, liberty, and private property rights that laid the foundation for the principles of limited government, personal freedom, and a competitive free marketplace that have brought us great prosperity.

Now America is moving in the opposite direction — back toward a socialist society that our forefathers rejected.  We're seeing the misery and problems faced by every society that has tried socialism.

On this Thanksgiving, America is experiencing a supply chain crisis due to the government progressively implementing leftist policies.  As a result, we're seeing inflation skyrocket, goods are running out, and what's left is difficult for middle-class families to afford.

Grocery store shelves are bare of many staple products.  The Farm Bureau's 36th annual survey shows that the cost of Thanksgiving dinner is up 14%.  The centerpiece on most Thanksgiving tables — the turkey — is up 24% from last year.  Thanksgiving 2021 could be the most expensive meal in the history of the holiday.

This is a precursor of what is yet to come if America falls to communism.

Have a great day and take step one to admit you are addicted to Trump!

12-Step Program for Republicans

Written by Robert J Gaydos

Wednesday, 24 February 2021 15:30

By Bob Gaydos

Denial is the first, big obstacle. Until and unless they can admit they were powerless over Donald Trump, Republicans have no hope of recovering. They will be forever known as Trumpaholics, people addicted to avoiding reality and destined for a life that is, by any reasonable measure, unmanageable. I cite the last five years as evidence.

But, as they say, there is a solution, one that has changed lives for the better for millions of people worldwide — a 12-Step program. It has worked miracles for alcoholics; it can work for Trumpaholics.

I’ve written on addiction and recovery for more than a dozen years. One of the recurring stories I've heard over that time is that the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous are not just a proven way to stop drinking, but also an excellent formula for living a good life. Getting rid of the booze — or in this case, the Donald — is only the beginning. Republicans can reap these rewards, individually or as a party … but only if they really want to change.

So, with a deep bow to Bill Wilson and A.A. and adapted in all humility, here are the 12 Steps of Recovery for Republicans:

We admitted we were powerless over Trump, that our party had become unmanageable. This state of affairs is usually evident to non-addicts of the individual’s acquaintance well before that aha! moment arrives, if it does. Members of A.A. say this is the only step they have to get perfect, for obvious reasons. If a Republican can’t admit — still — that Trump dominates his or her every political thought or action, there’s no sense going on to Step

Step 1 :Denial. However, if Republicans can look at the past five years of saying yes to virtually everything Trump did or said and acknowledge the trouble that this blind obedience, this dependence, has caused in Republicans’ lives (broken relationships, lost jobs and opportunities, ruined reputations, trouble with the law) as well as the pain it inflicted on the lives of many others, there is hope.Came to believe that a power greater than Trump or Mitch McConnell could restore us to sanity. (No one said this was easy.) No, this does not mean everyone becoming Evangelical Christians. Quite the opposite. That would simply be swapping blind faith in Trump for blind faith in other con men and women. Give me your money and you will be saved. For a party that professes a belief in strong family values and makes a public display of respecting religious (well, Christian) teachings, this should not be a problem. Theoretically. However, I think it could be challenging to many Republicans who have become used to giving lip service to their professed religious beliefs. Skeptical alcoholics are sometimes advised to pick a higher power of their own choosing or at least to believe that someone whose sobriety they admire has such a belief. Instead of putting their hands on some charlatan’s shoulders and bowing their heads, supposedly in prayer, Republicans should look within the ranks (or without) for a source of strength, hope and faith and emulate that person. It should be someone with a sincere, demonstrated, spiritual footing. Hint: it’s not Ted Cruz. Not a Koch brother or Rupert Murdoch either. Keep looking. Someone more like Lincoln, remember? It may take a little time. That’s OK.Made a decision to turn our will, our money and our platform over to the care of whatever power we came up with in

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Step 2. A key step. Last time out, Republicans did this almost accidentally with Trump. That was blind, misplaced faith in the flashy guy. No willpower, true, but no sense of shared responsibility to the greater good. This time, they need to decide to follow the lead of someone with sound moral principles and then lead their political lives accordingly. That is, decide to do the rest of the steps.Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. This step could be a problem for a lot of Republicans because it requires honesty. But if they want to change, they need a list of the things they want to change. For example, lying that the presidential election was stolen while knowing there was never any proof of this would be something to put high on the list. Lying is bad, even in politics. Hypocrisy is just a fancy word for lying. Also, stealing and harming others so as to benefit yourself. Breaking the law, too. All Trump’s pardons did not remove the guilt, they merely freed the guilty.Shared with that higher power from step two, with ourselves and another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. In other words, look in the mirror and say, “I have been a self-serving, lying, backstabbing, selfish, hypocritical, cowardly son-of-a-bitch for the past four years,“ and then release a statement to that affect — in detail — on social media. Get Liz Cheney or Lisa Murkowski to pose in the picture with you. Piece of cake.6. Were entirely ready to have my higher power (with the help of a new party leader of sound moral standing) remove these defects of character. Basically, Republicans must resign themselves to the fact that they have been a group of self-serving, lying, cowardly, etc. since they chose Trump as their leader. This is the truth, the real news. When and if they accept it, they can move on to Step 7.Humbly asked him or her to remove our shortcomings. Harder than it sounds. First of all, shortcomings seldom ever really go away. They find new hiding places. Republicans will have to become aware of them and try to avoid them. Stop lying about the deficit, That's a lifetime of work and will require humility. Good luck finding someone to explain that concept to Republicans. Again, not Ted Cruz, who confuses humiliation with humility.Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all. Really. You don’t get to totally screw up a country and just walk away like nothing happened. Not if you want to change. Start with the kids in the cages.Made direct amends to such people wherever possible except when to do so would injure them or others. Again, start with the kids in the cages. That last part lets Republicans stay out of jail and not hurt their own family by admitting how they routinely cheated minority voters with sketchy redistricting plans and harsh voter registration laws.Continued to take personal inventory and when wrong promptly admitted it. This is the new way of living part of it. “I’m sorry; I was wrong.” Try not to abuse this step.Sought through regular meetings and work sessions, at which an honest exchange of ideas is encouraged and welcomed, to maintain contact with our new party leader seeking only to learn what the new Republican Party stands for and the power and courage to carry that out. Prayer and meditation wouldn’t hurt either.Having had a major reprieve and possibly a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry the new Republican Party message to Trumpaholics and others and to practice its new principles in all our affairs. One day at a time.

That’s it. The formula for recovery for the Republican Party. But there is one thing more. With alcoholics, the drinking is just a symptom of the disease. When the drinking stops, the disease (much of the behavior) doesn’t go away. That’s why recovery is a daily practice. To avoid relapse.

The real question for Republicans is what made them Trumpaholics in the first place.

RFK Jr. Calls For Fauci And Bill Gates To Be Criminally Charged For Profiting Off COVID

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. spoke out this week to say that both Dr. Anthony Fauci and Bill Gates should be hit with criminal charges for gross negligence and profiting off of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Do you believe that Dr. Fauci and Bill Gates should be investigated for criminal wrongdoing?” podcast host Michael Cohen asked Kennedy.

“Yes,” Kennedy replied emphatically. “I think Fauci’s policies — 80% of the people who died from COVID should not have died. We should’ve been doing early treatment like the Chinese did. The Chinese put early treatment protocols with chloroquine, which is hydroxy — the cousin of the hydroxychloroquine.”

“In April, they had protocols with all the drugs we know are effective, anti-coagulants, anti-inflammatory steroids, hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine, and then vitamins, Vitamin D… they had dozens and dozens of Chinese herbs on their protocol that they published,” he continued. “And guess what? They obliterated the pandemic after a month and a half using early treatment. The Chinese had three deaths per million population, you know, but Tony Fauci had 2,200 Americans.”

“We have the biggest body count in the world because of his policies. We have, we have 4.2% of the global population,” Kennedy added. “We had 14.5% of the casualty COVID casualties. Why is that a success? Right. Of course, he should be criminally prosecuted because what he did was clearly, clearly demonstrably purposeful. And I can prove that in front of a jury. We know. And if you, if you read my book, just the first chapter, you will see that indictment laid out clear as day. He deliberately sabotaged by using fraudulent methodologies, ivermectin, hydroxychloroquine, and promoted a drug that he knew was deadly, Remdesivir.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) introduced a bill on Tuesday to award Kyle Rittenhouse the Congressional Gold Medal for “protecting the community of Kenosha, Wisconsin, during a Black Lives Matter (BLM) riot on August 25, 2020.”

The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest honor Congress can award an individual or institution. It is highly unlikely the bill will go anywhere in the Democratic-controlled House and Senate, and it has no co-sponsors.

Rittenhouse, who fatally shot two protesters in Kenosha and wounded a third, was acquitted last week by a jury of all charges, including intentional homicide.
Kyle Rittenhouse deserves to be remembered as a hero who defended his community, protected businesses, and acted lawfully in the face of lawlessness. I’m proud to file this legislation to award Kyle Rittenhouse a Congressional Gold Medal,

In the future President Trump will award him The Presidential Medal of Honor.

I suppose at this point there's nothing you won't steal. And the definition of some idiot NY Times opinion writer, who by definition is fucking miserable, is a piss poor way to view the world, and happiness.

Happiness is a frame of mind, and has nothing to do with "legitimizing the world." It accepts things as they are, and to me is reflective of the joys of life, of family, of health if you have it, of the little things, and it also includes a healthy dose of being able to mind your own fucking business once in a while.

In 2021 I've lost two co-workers (one to a tragic accident, the other to cancer), a close family member and a beloved pet. I've watched while a pack of truly evil, heartless, and ruthless assholes have inflicted so much pain and suffering upon our country, all in pursuit of an agenda harmful to our nation. Yet I remain hopeful, and happy, for what I have, who I can count among my closest family and friends, and for tomorrow, if it comes, meaning God has granted me one more day on this earth.

So be thankful and happy for what you have, and don't think your mission on this earth is to fuck things up for the rest of us, because that's all that liberalism has ever truly accomplished - the "equal" distribution of misery. And it's why chronically UNhappy liberals need to piss and moan in the Op/Ed pages of the NY Times.

Demonizing Black victims is an old racist trope that didn't work for defense attorneys this time
Analysis by Nicole Chavez and Brandon Tensley, CNN
Updated 4 hours ago Nov 25, 2021
Washington (CNN) - Ahmaud Arbery was the victim. But for weeks, he was painted as a brute and a thug in the trial of the three White men who killed him. This tactic isn't new, but rather the latest example in a long history of court cases that criminalize and dehumanize Black victims.
Emmett Till. Jordan Davis. Trayvon Martin. Botham Jean. George Floyd -- all of them Black, all of them victims, just as Arbery was.
Arbery's family can now feel a sense of justice after Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael and William "Roddie" Bryan Jr. were convicted on Wednesday, but that outcome is a rare exception to the rule.
"I wouldn't want to see no daddy watch their kid get lynched and shot down like that. So it's all our problem. ... Let's keep fighting. Let's keep doing and making this a better place for all human beings. All human beings," Marcus Arbery Sr. said after the reading of the verdict.
Race and racial tensions were clearly on display inside and outside the Georgia courtroom where the three men were tried, even as both the defense and the prosecution shied away from those discussions. Instead, the jury heard from the defense a number of racist dog whistles.
From assertions that Black pastors might frighten jurors to a remark about Arbery's "long, dirty toenails," the defense's strategy was rife with rhetoric that sought to dehumanize and devalue Black Americans.
"What I saw was the defense preying on White fears," said Carol Anderson, a historian and the chair of African American studies at Emory University. "The 'long, dirty toenails' -- that is an old trope of the 'Black Beast.' That is the stuff coming out of Reconstruction and Jim Crow."
Here's why the heart-wrenching trial was a textbook example of the criminalization and dehumanization of Black male victims:
Arbery had 'long, dirty toenails,' defense attorney said
During closing arguments, a defense attorney for Gregory McMichael, one of the men charged with Arbery's murder, tried to portray Arbery as a "runaway slave," said Charles Coleman Jr., a civil rights attorney and former prosecutor.
"Turning Ahmaud Arbery into a victim after the choices that he made does not reflect the reality of what brought Ahmaud Arbery to Satilla Shores in his khaki shorts with no socks to cover his long, dirty toenails," attorney Laura Hogue told the jurors.
The remark, which appeared to be based on Arbery's autopsy, brought an audible gasp from people in the courtroom and prompted Arbery's mother to walk out.
"Regardless of what kind of toenails he had, what size legs he had, that was still my son, and my son actually was running for his life in that description. I thought that was just flat-out rude," Arbery's mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, told CNN's John Berman on "AC 360" earlier this week.
To Cooper-Jones, the defense was trying to deflect from the fact that it didn't "have the proper evidence to get a conviction."
Angie Maxwell, a political scientist at the University of Arkansas and the co-author of the 2019 book "The Long Southern Strategy: How Chasing White Voters in the South Changed American Politics," said that she believes that the defense was trying to put Arbery "in a (specific) category of Black person."

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Arbery was jogging and stopped by the unoccupied house, his family said. Prosecutors showed the jury surveillance videos of Arbery entering the site, each time wandering around and leaving without incident.
But the defense insisted that, even if he hadn't stolen anything, Arbery was committing burglary because he entered the under-construction house illegally.
Anderson, the historian, said that people of many races and ethnicities look at houses under construction, and their behavior is seen as standard or normal.
"But for a Black person to do that, somehow that's criminal. So you have the criminalization of Blackness coursing through this thing," Anderson said.
The property's owner, Larry English Jr., testified in September that several people besides Arbery entered the property and that he never authorized the McMichaels to confront anyone.
The McMicheals' decision to chase Arbery was rooted in the idea that Black people are criminals, Anderson said.
"This was like the slave patrol that felt that it had the right to question Black people, to police the movements of Black people, to challenge Black people wherever they were," Anderson said.
Defense argued Black pastors were intimidating
Defense attorney Kevin Gough's attempt to ban Black pastors from the courtroom during the trial was an affront to Black pastors' role in comforting grieving families.
Gough said that having high-profile figures was intimidating and an attempt to pressure or influence the jury. While he apologized for his comments, days later, more than 100 Black pastors formed a "Wall of Prayer" to show their solidarity with Arbery's family and their opposition to Gough's comments.
For Anderson, the author of the 2021 book "The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America," the attorney's remarks recalled those made by the defense attorney for the men who killed Emmett Till in 1955.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

"When he looked at the jury and said something like, 'Every last Anglo-Saxon like Scott one of you knows that this is what we're fighting down here. You'll find these men not guilty.' That's what that sounded like to me," Anderson said.
"It sounded like, 'Every last Anglo-Saxon one of you knows that Black people are threatening. They're intimidating. And they're out to destroy our community. What the McMichaels and Bryan did was protect our community,'" she added.
A nearly all-White jury
The trial jury that found the McMichaels and Bryan guilty consisted of 11 White jurors and one Black juror, a breakdown that fueled the Black community's lack of confidence in the criminal justice system early on in the trial.
Scholars and law experts said that the racial breakdown was reminiscent of the Jim Crow era and quickly drew comparisons with the aftermath of Emmett Till's death.
"Here some 65 years later, we've advanced to the point of having potentially one Black juror who will sit on this jury," said Daryl D. Jones, an attorney with the Transformative Justice Coalition, referring to the 1955 trial in which the two men arrested in Till's slaying were acquitted by an all-White jury.
During the jury selection, defense attorneys drew criticism when they expressed their concerns over the lack of "Bubba" men.
"It would appear that White males born in the South, over 40 years of age, without four-year college degrees, sometimes euphemistically known as 'Bubba' or 'Joe Six Pack,' seem to be significantly underrepresented," Gough, the attorney who represented Bryan, told the court at the time.
Other cases are 'eerily similar'
Over the past decade, many unarmed Black men and boys have been dehumanized during court procedures.
"Remember they assassinated the character of Trayvon Martin after he had been assassinated, and now they're doing the exact same thing almost 10 years later with Ahmaud Arbery. I mean, the similarities are eerily similar," Crump, the attorney representing Arbery's father, said hours before the verdict was read on Wednesday,
Crump also called the case "Trayvon Martin 2.0" on CNN's New Day.
Martin was 17 years old when he was shot to death by George Zimmerman in 2012. The shooting and Zimmerman's subsequent acquittal in 2013 launched the Black Lives Matter movement and reminded Americans that they weren't living in a post-racial society.
After Martin's death, protesters nationwide wore hoodies in a nod to the shooter's description of the teenager. Zimmerman told a 911 operator that he saw a "suspicious" person wearing a "dark hoodie" moments before he shot the teenager in what he said was self-defense, according to the police. Martin's family and supporters said that they believe that race played a role in the shooting.
But nearly 10 years after Martin's death, civil rights activists and protesters secured some solace from Wednesday's verdict in the Arbery death trial case.
Speaking outside the courtroom following the convictions of all three defendants, family attorney Crump said, "Think about how long he (Marcus Arbery Sr.) and Wanda have been enduring all the innuendo, all the allegations, all the character assassinations, long legs with dirty toenails. Just imagine all they went through.

It's not hard to see how empty the life of a leftist is. Incapable of sincere thanks and incapable of genuine happiness, meaning in life is lost. Political platitudes are all that remain. So is leftism a disease that rots the human soul? It most certainly is. First, it deprives the afflicted of seeing anything "good" in the world. Then it so hardens their hearts that acts of hatred are justified as kindness. And finally, in the name of fighting death and misery, incurable leftists set about spreading both far and wide. Leftism eats away at one's humanity until only a skeleton remains, screaming, "All that I have wrought is for your own good." And over a hundred million murdered this last century and billions more who have suffered and endured the left's cruelty under the guise of "equity" or "fairness" provide testament to the truth that only death and destruction follow wherever leftism spreads.

Instead of being thankful for life, a leftist is thankful for abortion. Instead of being thankful for family, a leftist is thankful that the traditional nuclear family has never been more weakened. Instead of being thankful for the human ingenuity that has driven living standards dramatically higher and spread prosperity around the world, a leftist is thankful that a small coterie of globalist elites has promised to squelch industry and personal ownership in its Quixotic campaign against bad weather. Instead of being thankful that individual rights and constitutional republicanism have fostered human equality, a leftist is thankful that an international ruling class is rising once again to exert power over a planet of serfs. Instead of being thankful for the hydrocarbons beneath their feet, a leftist curses the sources of energy that keep civilization afloat. Instead of being thankful for living in a country that has spread liberty and freedom as far as any that has ever existed, a leftist curses the founding principles of American Independence. Instead of being thankful that merit and personal character have supplanted the color of a person's skin as the evidence for his worth, a leftist curses goodwill among men and preaches the divisiveness of unconscious prejudice, invisible bias, and hidden racial supremacy. Instead of being thankful that good people get up every day to work and struggle and support their families through sweat and blood, a leftist curses the productive among us and redistributes their efforts to those who choose to produce nothing. Instead of being thankful that there are people who go out into the world to build something new, a leftist follows in their tracks, shouting from behind, "You didn't build that!"

In other words, the only thing for which leftists are thankful is that they have absolutely no reason to be thankful at all.

What happened was the pandemic caused demand to plummet, forcing a drop in both the prices that companies charged and the profits that they earned.
What is happening now, inversely, is that demand is up again. Way up. Especially for physical goods, such as furniture and cars and sports equipment, since cooped-up consumers have cash they’re eager to spend and they’re still not totally comfortable purchasing higher-risk services such as travel or live entertainment.
As I said, companies are always out to make a buck; it turns out to be much easier to make a buck when demand is high.
The pandemic also fouled up — really, continues to foul up — the supply chain. Those bottlenecks make it more challenging for companies to produce and sell quite as much stuff as the public wants.
So they are selling out what they have, turning a tidy profit on those sales, and paying top dollar to acquire even more inventory, the last unit of which is often the most expensive to procure. Similar forces are affecting the energy market as factories ramp up production and gobble up more fuel in the process.
These forces are leading to both record profits and higher inflation. Progressives say you should be suspicious that both things could be happening at once, but the truth is that both are a symptom of constrained supply doing its best to meet gangbusters demand.
None of this is to say that there aren’t some industries that are extremely screwed up, or concentrated, or that could use some sort of regulatory or antitrust intervention to function more competitively. There definitely are. But it beggars belief that inflation is up because either greed or market power has somehow gotten so much worse in the past 20 or so months — as opposed to these more obvious dynamics (demand outstripping supply) driving up prices.
Democrats could acknowledge this reality. They could say: Hey, we feel your pain, but there’s not much the president can do to snuff out inflation. They could also argue that above-trend inflation may be unpleasant but worth dealing with for a little while, because running the economy a little hot enables faster job growth, pay hikes for the lowest-wage workers and so on.
They could say that this set of trade-offs is preferable to one where policymakers instead try harder to squelch inflation by suppressing that gangbusters demand (by pressuring the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates, for example, or engaging in fiscal austerity); in that scenario, we might get lower prices, but also less hiring and less growth. Perhaps another recession.
Instead of making any of these arguments, we’re getting more lazy populist demagoguing.

Beware. Democracy depends on accountability. If abuses of power go unchallenged, those who wield power will continue to consolidate it. It’s a vicious cycle that erodes faith in democracy and breeds cynicism.

So how do we break the cycle and hold these power centers accountable?

Rotate Supreme Court justices with appellate judges and add more justices to the Court.Demand transparency from the Fed, and have an open debate on who should run it instead of letting Wall Street effectively decide. And finally, treat Big Tech companies as public utilities and regulate them, or break them up.

I’ll be honest. It will take vast amounts of public pressure and intentional organizing to get these solutions enacted.

Our only option is to turn up the pressure and keep fighting for our democracy.

The reasons why the infection rate is growing quickly

1: Cold weather in in the northern states, means that more people go back to restaurants and other closed areas. History has shown that before.

2: conspiracy theories

A consistent feature of the pandemic has been the presence of a relatively small but vocal number of conspiracy theorists who resist attempts to tackle COVID-19. Their views might seem marginal and extreme but recent research suggests that we should take them seriously.

Survey data shows that belief in conspiracy theories is associated with a lack of confidence in steps aimed at addressing the pandemic and risky health behaviours and that conspiracy adherents are more likely to refuse to socially distance, wear a mask or get vaccinated.

One reason for this is that conspiracy theories work differently to other forms of misinformation. Rather than simply trading in inaccurate or misleading information, conspiracy theorists believe they have discovered the hidden truth that world events result from the deliberate actions of unseen, malevolent actors.

This might mean blaming the emergence of COVID-19 on “big pharma" or believing that social distancing measures form part of an attempt by a hidden “world government" to restrict civil liberties. This kind of thinking provides a simple explanation for complex and unpredictable events. In a time of widespread uncertainty and fear it is easy to see the appeal in claims that the pandemic is deliberate and controlled.

When we think about how conspiracy theories like these spread, there is a tendency to focus on the role of social media. We've become accustomed to seeing fact checking and moderators working in these spaces to manage to problem.

But with colleagues, I've been exploring the offline space through an analysis of the Light, a monthly newspaper (and self-described “truthpaper") delivered free of charge across the UK. Conspiracy theories about the pandemic are spreading offline as well as through social

In a time of widespread uncertainty and fear it is easy to see the appeal in claims that the pandemic is deliberate

B

Conspiracist articles are presented alongside other, unrelated material, so that overall, readers experience the variety of content that might be expected in a mainstream source of news. For instance, the same issue might include an article suggesting COVID vaccines could be used for mind control and a more conventional news item on Russian shipping.

As an example of the offline dissemination of conspiracy theories related to the pandemic, the Light is important for a number of reasons. It seemingly has a wide reach, with claims of a print run of over 100,000 copies for each issue. It is produced and distributed by a network of activists, drawing on a closed Facebook group of more than 8,000 members.

A front cover of an issue of The Light.

Conspiracy and activism

However, the Light's real significance is that it appears to be encouraging a highly participatory engagement with its content. Readers are encouraged to seek out, disseminate and act on the issues they are reading about rather than simply passively receiving the information. This approach means that the Light doesn't just aim to broaden readers' knowledge but to engage them in a process of discovery, revelation and action.

We found this happens in a number of ways. There are direct calls for action, for example, through articles encouraging readers to attend rallies and events, or promoting the refusal to wear face coverings.

Other articles promote the importance of “doing your own research", directing readers to seek out content that challenges mainstream opinion on the pandemic. There are even puzzle features that require the reader to conduct research into conspiratorial content in order to be successfully completed.

Being “awake" is a central theme in conspiracist content. Readers are invited to join an in-group of conspiracy adherents who refute the “official narrative". The state of being “awake" is often put across as being virtuous and exceptional, and readers are frequently encouraged to view their knowledge of the pandemic's “true" nature as a motivating factor to action.

An example of conspiracy a conspiracy theory from the American Thinker.

Our Founding Fathers understood this when they wrote the Declaration of Independence.

They were building a foundation for society’s state of mind, for shared moral unity, and with an expectation that where society failed, new goals and aspirations could be created to fill the gaps. The Founders understood that they were fallible, imperfect, and that society would need to continually grow and develop to meet the people’s needs. However, this would only succeed if the first three priorities remained: life, liberty, and happiness.

So, where has our brotherly love gone? It’s still there, just beneath the surface. The media and woke ideologists try to tamp it down; they teach that we should hate one another because of our differences. But we have all seen the worthlessness of these thoughts, and how most of our neighbors want nothing to do with this callous ideology.

The media and the Twitter and the FBI and CIA and DOJ and public schools are teaching children and your neighborhs to hate their elders. And turn them into Communist and atheists. And take away life, liberty, and happiness.

They are bonkers.

But even Scott believes it.

Black Friday might change some minds about Sleepy Joe Biden.. even though welfare queens are not getting free money from kputz

What You Need To Know
With Black Friday and the Thanksgiving shopping weekend around the corner, nearly two million more people are expected to shop this year than last

Shoppers are expected to spend anywhere between $1,400 to $2,000 this holiday season, experts say

Last year, many people stayed at home due to the coronavirus pandemic

Experience gifts such as spa visits, football tickets, sky diving are expected to be popular gifts this holiday season
Last year, a combination of government restrictions, limited business hours, and overall apprehensiveness from consumers prevented many shoppers from going out to shop due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But this year is different.

Shoppers are antsy to go out and shop – online and in-person, said Dr. Zoe Bryan Engstrom, a consumer affairs lecturer at California State University, Long Beach.

"After a year and a half of being inside, we're seeing a desire to get out, shop, lunch, see Santa, and spend time with loved ones shopping in person," Engstrom said in an email to Spectrum News. "Many shoppers have indicated they will be shopping both in-person and online; best of both worlds."

Black Friday, which occurs the day after Thanksgiving, is usually the biggest shopping event of the year. The day is marked with "door-buster sales," discounted items, and long lines – to get inside retail stores and at the checkout.

The invention of Small Business Saturday the following day to support shopping at local small businesses, and Cyber Monday, which is the online shopping equivalent of Black Friday, Thanksgiving weekend kicks off the holiday shopping season.

The coronavirus pandemic and delta variant surge last fall kept many shoppers home.

Still, with vaccination rates up and vaccines for the coronavirus readily available, experts say growing pent-up demand and revenge spending has many consumers wanting to go out to spend, spend, spend.

Engstrom said while there was a stall in sales earlier in the year with the end of government pandemic assistance checks, that does not expect to impact this year's holiday sales.

"Last year, on average, a shopper spent just under $700 during the holiday season," Engstrom said. "This year projected average per person sales are expected to be just under $800; up over $100 from last year."

No conspiracy theories Scott.

Both sides Scott

Earlier this month, however, a Russia analyst who was a primary source for the dossier was charged with five counts of lying to the FBI about where he got the information he passed on to Steele. That indictment came from special counsel John Durham, who was appointed by former Attorney General William Barr to determine whether the intelligence community broke any laws while investigating Trump-Russia connections.

Why there’s debate
The indictment has launched a new round of debate about the response to the dossier’s release and the continuing impact of its many shaky claims.

A number of prominent media outlets — including the New York Times, CNN and the Washington Post — have published lengthy reevaluations of their own coverage of the dossier in the past few weeks. Many conservatives have argued this is merely an effort to save face from organizations that spent years promoting the report’s dodgy claims as a way to build suspicion against Trump. There have also been calls for a deeper examination into how much the intelligence community relied on the dossier in its broader investigations into the Trump campaign’s relationship with Russia.

While few will defend the substance of the dossier at this point, mainstream and left-leaning commentators have accused Trump’s defenders of trying to use its shortcomings to discredit all investigations into the former president’s behavior. Those inquiries, like the Mueller report and the bipartisan report by the Senate Intelligence Committee, have found substantial evidence of impropriety that have nothing to do with Steele’s report.

What’s next
Durham’s inquiry into the Russia investigation is ongoing and it’s unclear whether it might produce more indictments or new information about the Steele dossier’s origins in the future.

Perspectives
Steele accomplished his goal of undermining Trump from the start of his presidency

“The purpose was to present the FBI with oppo-research that masqueraded as ‘intelligence,’ and it worked. Mrs. Clinton lost the election, but the Russia tale sabotaged an incoming President with relentless media assaults and a special counsel investigation.” — Editorial, Wall Street Journal

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The Steele dossier is largely irrelevant to the question of Trump’s Russia ties

“Even if every single word in the Steele dossier was wrong, that would not change the fact that the Russians sought to manipulate the U.S. election using hacked material and a disinformation campaign. Nor would it change the fact that the Trump family welcomed this intervention.” — Anne Applebaum, The Atlantic

The real issue is how the intelligence community treated the dossier’s allegations

“Too good to check is an impulse that never serves journalists well, and it’s even worse when it is the policy of a law-enforcement agency wielding awesome powers. At best, the FBI allowed itself to get duped into playing along with a political hit against, first, a presidential candidate and, then, the duly elected president of the United States.” — Editorial, National Review

The media has a duty to acknowledge its failures in covering the dossier

“Addressing the shortcomings over the dossier doesn’t mean ignoring the corruption and democracy-shattering conduct that the Trump administration pushed for four years. But it would mean coming to terms with our conduct and whatever collateral damage these errors have caused to our reputation.” — Bill Grueskin, New York Times

The dossier was a distraction from the real scandal

“The Steele dossier is a sideshow. Like many raw intelligence reports, it was full of uncorroborated information — a lot of which doesn’t check out. But the Steele dossier did not launch the FBI investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election, and discrediting it does not undermine the evidence that the Kremlin helped Trump win the election with his campaign’s eager encouragement and cooperation.” — Max Boot, Washington Post

The report’s most important accusation remains unproven

“Steele's findings on Russian election-meddling, which were ahead of the curve at the time, now seem more like prescient geopolitical observations rather than insider information. Plus, his final and most consequential takeaway — that Trump's campaign worked hand-in-hand with the Kremlin — was essentially debunked by special counsel Robert Mueller's sweeping investigation.” — Marshall Cohen, CNN

The media won’t ever truly hold itself accountable for its failures

“Those who perpetuated the Russia collusion deception — and this means editors and pundits, not only reporters — still hold premier jobs in political media. Many, in fact, have been rewarded with better gigs. … Journalism is ostensibly about transparency and truth, and yet not one of these sentinels of democracy has explained how they were supposedly fooled for years, exhibiting not a modicum of skepticism — one of the most vital components of good journalism.” — David Harsanyi, New York Post

Coverage of the dossier pushed conservative readers away from mainstream media

“The certain fallout of this is that going forward, many Republican candidates will run as much or more against the media as against their Democratic opponents. That’s likely to happen even if the main media organizations that amplified phony Steele dossier claims retract and apologize for large swaths of their reporting.” — Chris Reed, San Diego Union-Tribune

The dossier was a gift to those looking to discredit inquiries into Trump’s impropriety

“It was a clever ploy on the part of the Trump gang: Deny the unfounded — that Trump was caught on tape consorting with urinating prostitutes and that he conspired directly with Putin — to sidestep the damning reality that Trump and his aides betrayed the nation by both encouraging the Russian attack and trying to cover up Putin’s sinister intervention.” — David Corn, Mother Jones

Anything coming out of Durham’s investigation should be treated with suspicion

“[Durham was] tasked by Trump’s attorney general, Bill Barr, with investigating the Russian investigation itself to try to prove the whole thing was a hoax like Trump said all along, to try to prove that it was criminal to investigate the Russia matter.” — Rachel Maddow, MSNBC

They are coming to get rid white people.

If one takes the ideologues who rule over America at their word, then the governing principles of this country’s reigning regime are things like fairness, equality, diversity, or “anti-racism.”

But of course, anybody with a brain today isn’t taking America’s rulers at their word. It is obvious, and has been for many years now, that there is no spirit of “fairness” or “anti-racism” in the heart of their ideology. Instead, the spirit at the heart of America’s leadership is bitter, envious, resentful, hateful.

Who is it hateful toward? You know who. The modern American regime is built on explicit, institutionalized hostility to the people who most resemble the great Americans of the past. It is anti-white, anti-male, anti-Christian, anti-rural, and anti-middle class. The more of these traits a person has, the more worthy of hate they become. The more the Globalist American Empire decays and squanders the inheritance it was given, the more bile and hatred it directs against those who symbolize what came before.

But those on the receiving end of this new discriminatory regime may not appreciate its full scope or the ultimate fate that the Globalist American Empire has planned for them. They may see recent anti-white animus as a temporary spell, or a limited affair that can be waited out.

New Variant a ‘Serious Concern’ in South Africa

Bloomberg: “Scientists in South Africa are studying a recently identified new coronavirus variant of concern, stoking fears the country may face a potentially severe fourth wave that could spread internationally.”

“The new discovery, called B.1.1.529 until a Greek letter is assigned to it by the World Health Organization, carries an unusually large number of mutations and is ‘clearly very different’ from previous incarnations.”

BBC: “The latest is the most heavily mutated version discovered so far – and it has such a long list of mutations that it was described by one scientist as ‘horrific.’ while another told me it was the worst variant they’d seen.”

But Wan Hai Lines Ltd., the Taiwanese shipping corporation that owns those vessels, is making a record profit this year. So is every major ocean shipping company, trucking company and warehouse company, as consumer demand has led to a 20% jump in imports.

The supply chain, defined as the system of moving goods from factories and farms to end consumers, is tied into knots and failing to deliver. But supply chain companies, each a private entity that hopes to make as much money as possible out of the surge in consumer demand, are having their best year ever. At the moment, that means there’s little financial incentive to resolve the supply chain crisis quickly.

“Right now consumers are screaming because they don’t have the product and the price is going up,” said Christopher S. Tang, a distinguished professor at the UCLA Anderson School of Management who studies supply chains, “but the big players are quietly happy.”

Stock Futures Drop on Concerns Over New Variant
8:33 am EST
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL SAYS:
“Stocks, oil prices and government-bond yields slumped after South Africa raised the alarm over a fast-spreading strain of the coronavirus, triggering concern that travel restrictions and other curbs will spoil the global economy’s recovery.

CNBC SAYS:
“The downward moves came after WHO officials on Thursday warned of a new Covid-19 variant that’s been detected in South Africa. The new variant contains more mutations to the spike protein, the component of the virus that binds to cells, than the highly contagious Delta variant. Because of these mutations, scientists fear it could have increased resistance to vaccines.”

THE WASHINGTON POST SAYS:
“Global health leaders are urging caution as the holiday season gets underway, pointing to a 23 percent spike in coronavirus cases across the Americas in the past week, a surge that follows spikes in Europe — which officials warn could be a ‘window into the future for the Americas.'"

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL SAYS:
“As Covid-19 infections and deaths in the European Union eclipse those in the U.S., the region is confronting an ugly reality: Taming the Delta variant is proving harder than a virus-weary continent had hoped.

“Fast-rising Covid-19 contagion in parts of Europe, including Germany, is sparking fears of another winter of full hospitals. Countries are rushing to roll out booster shots as evidence accumulates that last summer’s vaccinations are losing some of their efficacy.”

To a certain extent they’ve become a cartel,” Tang said. “There’s not that much competition, so they can jack up the price more.”

A look at San Pedro Bay, where dozens of ships have been idling for weeks, might give the impression that these companies are under duress. How can having $100-million ships tied up at anchor be good for the bottom line?

The shipping companies’ financial reports show that they’re finding a way. A.P. Moller-Maersk, the Copenhagen-based shipping giant, is on track to make more than $16 billion in profit in 2021 — three times as much money as its previous best year ever in 2014, and the most profit ever booked by any company in Danish history. Cosco Shipping, the Shanghai-based company that competes with Maersk for the top spot in the industry, made $12.6 billion in profit from container shipping in the first nine months of 2021, and reported that its revenue had doubled since 2020, thanks to the supply chain squeeze.

One more time kputz supply and demand can increase profits and again and again and again inflation rates.

Right now, American officials and our allies are attempting to undo the harm Trump did by withdrawing from the nuclear agreement with Iran, which has put them far ahead of where they now would be with enriching uraniaum.

The Democratic brand is broken. The infrastructure bill isn’t fixing it.
In one recent focus group, even those who voted for Joe Biden in 2020 weren’t exactly sure what the party stands for.

“What Democrats discovered, largely through focus groups and polling, was even worse than expected. The problems cut far deeper than the failings of McAuliffe, or Biden’s flagging approval ratings. Rather, the Democratic Party’s entire brand was a wreck”

The Los Angeles Fire Department is investigating an incident in which a firefighter “responded inappropriately” after being handed a letter to comply with the city’s vaccine mandate, a department spokeswoman said Wednesday.

The LAFD member responded to receiving the noncompliance letter by dropping his pants and wiping his buttocks with the letter, leaving fecal matter on the document, before dropping it to the ground, according to the Stentorians of Los Angeles City, a group representing African American firefighters.

Oil prices tumbled to the lowest level in more than two months Friday as the new Covid-19 strain sparked fears about a demand slowdown just as supply increases.

The leg lower came amid a broad sell-off in the market with the Dow dropping more than 900 points. The World Health Organization warned Thursday of a new Covid variant detected in South Africa. It could potentially be more resistance to vaccines thanks to its mutations, although the WHO said further investigation is needed.

The slow motion coup is still going on..

It’s now clear that the ramifications of what’s become known as the Big Lie didn’t end with the events of January 6. Far from it. A year later, a persistent, overwhelming majority of Republicans continue to believe the 2020 election was stolen from Trump. That false belief has been used to justify a wave of new voting restrictions, with the Brennan Center for Justice documenting 33 laws in 19 states, many of which experts say disproportionately disenfranchise people of color, college students, elderly voters, and disabled voters. At least 10 Republicans who questioned the election results are seeking to oversee future elections in battleground states as candidates for secretary of state. A recent CNN poll found that a majority of Americans believe it is at least somewhat likely that an elected official will overturn an upcoming election to favor their political party. Only 6 percent say our democracy is not in danger.

The edifice of #StopTheSteal was constructed on a foundation of false claims of widespread election fraud that predates Trump’s candidacy. But by tracing the convoluted journey of the tweet that started #StopTheSteal, you can see exactly how these long-standing beliefs, the singular rhetoric of Donald Trump, and the evolving online and offline organizing tactics of the far right came together to create an unprecedented misinformation cascade. The dynamics that made this possible haven’t gone away. In fact, in some ways, the prospects for our upcoming elections are even worse.
