Covid infection rates from the CDC

I am sure there is a great explanation as to why Governor "shutdown" Whitmer and Michigan have 10 times the rate of infection as Governor "Covid-killer" DeSantis and Florida... I just can't think of it right now!

The supply supply supply.

Photos of cargo containers backed up at ports and complaints from consumers about delivery delays and shortages have jolted the Biden administration into action, forcing it to focus on supply chains and the cost-containment features of the Build Back Better legislation. On both counts, the White House received some good news on Wednesday.

As Steve Rattner, who served as auto-industry czar in the Obama administration, explains, “It’s still hard to get a new iPhone quickly, but the good news is that the supply bottlenecks are showing signs of easing.” While the appearance of a new coronavirus variant could affect progress and not all supply chain issues have been resolved, Rattner argues that “for now, we can be at least a little bit hopeful.”

That’s because pressure from President Biden and local government officials on ports is showing results. Rattner explains, “In mid-November, 86 container ships were floating around San Pedro Bay waiting for a berth. Today, just two weeks later, that figure is down to 44, roughly where we were in early September.” As a result, the cost of sending a container from China to the West Coast, which hit a high of more than $20,000, is down about 25 percent.

Reducing the cost of supply is a significant step in reducing inflation rates.

The fire that’s here’: US is still battling delta variant

By HEATHER HOLLINGSWORTHtoday

While all eyes are on the new and little-understood omicron variant that is popping up around the country, the delta form of the coronavirus isn’t finished wreaking havoc in the U.S., swamping hospitals with record numbers of patients in the Midwest and New England.

“Omicron is a spark that’s on the horizon. Delta variant is the fire that’s here today,” said Dr. Nirav Shah, director of the state Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Maine, where an unprecedented 334 people were in the hospital with COVID-19 as of midweek.

The U.S. recorded its first confirmed omicron infection on Wednesday, in a Californian who had been to South Africa, where the variant was first identified a week ago. Several more cases were reported Thursday — five in the New York City area and one each in Minnesota, Hawaii and Colorado — under circumstances suggesting the variant has begun spreading within the U.S.

But there is much that is unknown about omicron, including whether it is more contagious than previous versions, makes people sicker, thwarts the vaccine or more easily breaks through the immunity that people get from a bout of COVID-19. World health authorities have yet to link any deaths to omicron.

ADV

For now, the extra-contagious delta variant accounts for practically all cases in the U.S. and continues to inflict misery at a time when many hospitals are struggling with nurse shortages and a backlog of patients undergoing procedures that had been put off early in the pandemic.

The fear is that omicron will foist even more patients, and perhaps sicker ones, onto hospitals.

“For me, it’s really just, I can’t imagine,” said Dr. Natasha Bhuyan, a family physician in Phoenix, which has also been hit hard. “Are we going to see another surge in cases that’s even higher than what we’re seeing now? What will that do to our health system? What will that do to our hospitals?”

Days ago, the CSI released a revised edition of Getting to Know the President: Intelligence Briefings of Presidential Candidates and Presidents-Elect, 1952-2016. And what makes this edition new is that it includes a chapter on the 45th president that is titled, “Donald J. Trump—A Unique Challenge.”

The book is authored by John Helgerson, a veteran CIA intelligence officer who served as the agency’s inspector general in the George W. Bush administration. During those years, he investigated the CIA’s use of torture and wrote a classified report (released years later) criticizing the agency for these interrogation practices and noting the CIA might have violated international law. And now Helgerson, in a gentle way, is warning the public about a man who served in the White House and who might once again try to occupy the Oval Office.

Helgerson, one can tell, bends over backward to be fair to the former guy. He notes that during some intelligence briefings, Trump—as presidential candidate, president-elect, and president—listened attentively and was generally respectful toward the briefers dispatched by the intelligence community. But the bottom line is that Trump didn’t pay close attention to intelligence. This is no newsflash. After all, Trump once said that he was his own best foreign policy adviser “because I have a very good brain.”

In the first paragraph of the 37-page chapter, Helgerson notes that Trump, “by his own account, did not often read.” And that included the President’s Daily Brief, the report drawn up each day—with immense effort from the intelligence community—for the chief executive that summarizes need-to-know national security matters. For some presidents, the PDB is delivered each day with a briefing from an intelligence officer. Trump only wanted briefings about twice a week. It was less during the presidential transition.

Interesting opinion blowing cramps blaming the Keystone Pipeline for increased oil prices.....sad how many times I have posted that arguement is BULLSHIT and proved it!!!!!!

Yesterday at 6:08 p.m. EST

Corporate greed. The cancellation of an oil pipeline that didn’t yet exist. A secret plot to cancel Halloween.
Every time I think the inflation discourse can’t get dumber, I’m proven wrong.
Opinions to start the day, in your inbox. Sign up.
To be fair: The forces behind inflation, like many economic problems, are complicated. Economists can’t fully explain what determines current pricing behavior and inflation expectations in the real world, much less precisely predict where prices will land in a few months. New waves in the pandemic aren’t helping, either.
Most inflation predictions that top forecasters made in the spring turned out to be much too low. Elite academic economists, when surveyed about the risks of prolonged inflation, candidly acknowledge a lot of uncertainty.
All of which means there’s a lot of room for reasonable error on this issue, even among experts. But lately partisan factions have concocted new, unreasonable sources of error, too. Some of this rhetoric has been impressively creative; it’s basically like inflation fan fiction.
ADVERTISING

The left, for instance, has been demagoguing about how “corporate greed” is responsible for high inflation — implying that corporations have only just remembered they’re supposed to be greedy after having been very altruistic for several decades, and especially last year. (Inflation was super-low by historical standards in early 2020.)
Catherine Rampell: The greediest Thanksgiving ever. Or not.
The right, meanwhile, has been spinning its own increasingly ludicrous tall tales about inflation. That’s because Republicans see high inflation as valuable political fodder heading into the midterms.
“This is a gold mine for us,” as Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) recently put it.
Image without a caption
Follow Catherine Rampell‘s opinions

As Scott presumably knows, presidents have extremely limited power to affect prices, especially prices set by global markets (as is the case for, say, oil). But voters don’t really understand this, and many are eager to blame the president whenever they’re unhappy about the rising costs for gas or groceries. The GOP has decided it should take advantage. Strategists are working overtime to exploit voters’ economic ignorance by proposing ways that Democrats might have swelled prices.

Republicans and right-wing media have argued, for instance, that President Biden has driven up energy prices as part of his supposed war on fossil fuels.
Specifically, they blame him for shutting down the Keystone XL pipeline. They don’t mention, however, that this pipeline was only 8 percent built when Biden revoked a U.S.-side permit for its construction. So Biden did not actually shut down any existing supply. (It’s also not clear that the canceled XL pipeline would have much effect on U.S. gas prices, even if it were eventually built someday, given that most oil passing through it likely would be exported.)

The Six Day War was in 1967. In 1967, Biden was in his second year of law school at Syracuse University (where he finished 76th in his class of 85, recall, after having been caught plagiarizing). It is doubtful Golda Meir invited a second-year law student to mediate the crisis.

The economy added just 210,000 jobs in the month of November, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday, and the unemployment rate fell to 4.2 percent from 4.6 percent.

Economists had been expecting a gain of 535,000 jobs and the unemployment rate to fall to 4.5 percent.

The U.S. economy added 210,000 jobs in November, while the unemployment rate plummeted to 4.2% from 4.6%.

Why it matters: Job gains slowed sharply, but the labor market recovery remains on track.

Economists expected 575,000 new jobs last month.

Flashback: It comes after stunning job growth in October, alongside major upgrades to August and September gains.

Former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows went on Newsmax on Wednesday night and agreed with his old boss that his new book is “fake news.”

Ahead of next week’s release of his upcoming memoir, titled The Chief’s Chief, the Guardian reported that the ex-Trump official writes in its page that former President Donald Trump first tested positive for COVID-19 on Sept. 26—three days before his first debate with Joe Biden.

Trump (somewhat) denied Meadows’ account, claiming he “did not have COVID” before or during the debate last year. In response, on Wednesday evening, Meadows sheepishly agreed with Trump’s assessment of the reporting tied to his book.

“I believe the president said it’s fake news. What’s the story here?” Newsmax anchor Rob Schmitt asked, prompting Meadows to answer: “Well, the president’s right, it’s fake news.”

Shutdown Averted After Conservatives Cave
December 3, 2021 at 6:52 am EST By Taegan Goddard 23 Comments

Playbook:
“All 100 senators agreed late Thursday night to quickly proceed to a bill funding the government through Feb. 18. The breakthrough came after Schumer gave Republicans a vote (with a simple majority threshold) to defund federal vaccination mandates. He did so only because there were two Republicans absent, meaning that even if Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) sided with Republicans, the amendment would be defeated. (And fail it did, 48-50.)

“Conservatives will argue they got something out of this drama: a vote on their issue. In reality, it was a face-saving measure. The far-right started out demanding that Congress effectively scuttle the mandates, then reduced their ask to a mere vote they knew would fail, ensuring smooth passage of a continuing resolution a full 30 hours before the shutdown deadline.

“Another reality: Their shutdown threat was never going to give them what they wanted. Schumer was all too willing to embrace the showdown over vaccines amid the threat of the Omicron Covid-19 variant. Plus, fellow Republicans blasted their demand as irresponsible and pointless.”

A LOT GOING ON IN REPUBLICANISM IS IRRESPONSIBLE AND POINTLESS.

Even The Wall Street Journal reports that Bidennomics is doing incredibly well considering everything else!

The U.S. economy added just 210,000 jobs in November, a slowdown in hiring that clouds a recovery amid new Covid-19 uncertainties.

The slower pace of hiring last month—the smallest monthly gain since last December—followed an upwardly revised increase of 546,000 jobs in October, the Labor Department said, and comes as employers face a persistent shortage of available workers. The unemployment rate fell to 4.2% as more people joined the labor force, the department added.

Average wages rose 4.8% from a year ago, as workers continued to see pay increases amid higher inflation.

The share of people either working or looking for work rose to 61.8% in November from 61.6% in October, suggesting that wage increases are starting to draw workers off the sidelines.

The economy over the past couple of months appeared to have been rebounding from a summertime slowdown caused by the Covid-19 Delta variant and supply-chain disruptions. Household spending picked up 1.3% in October from the previous month, outpacing inflation, as a strengthening labor market and accumulated household savings prompted consumers to splurge.

The latest monthly jobs report shows that employers added 210,000 jobs in November, below the 573,000 expected by economists polled by The Wall Street Journal. The unemployment rate declined to 4.2% in November and the share of people either working or looking for work rose, a positive sign for the economy.

“On balance I would still rate it a good report for the economy, despite the fact that the headline looks to be a miss,” said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer at Independent Advisor Alliance.

Power Line

POSTED ON DECEMBER 3, 2021 BY SCOTT JOHNSON IN BIDEN ADMINISTRATION, CORONAVIRUS, JOE BIDEN

BIDEN’S COVID-19 WINTER PLAN

Yesterday President Biden went out to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda to deliver “Remarks by President Biden on the COVID-19 Winter Plan.” He spoke in the animatronic style to which we have grown accustomed, with the occasional short circuits and misfires included. He opened with a haywire attempt at humor:

I’ve seen more — (laughs) — of Dr. Fauci than my wife. We kid each other, but — (laughter) — they look — who’s President? Fauci. (Laughter.)

But all kidding aside, I sincerely mean it.

It is not clear to me what he “sincerely means.” That he sees the fallacious Dr. Fauci more than the fake Dr. Jill? That Fauci is really president? How unfunny can you be?

Biden delivered the remarks setting forth his big plan to stem the panic he has helped foment over the Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus. Does this make sense? Are we going to develop seasonal campaigns to address each new variant of the virus? This is madness.

As always, the remarks stressed a theme with monomaniacal intensity. We are all voyagers on the good ship Pequod. Biden is our Captain Ahab. Covid-19 is his Moby Dick. The prospects are not good.

The theme of the speech was vaccinations. For example, he will be:

…expanding the nationwide booster campaign with more outreach, more appointments, more hours, more times and sites to walk in, providing boosters shots for up to 110

Here is point two:

But the second point is that — launching new family vaccination clinics to make it easier for children, parents, and whole families to get vaccinated in one place, and new policies to keep our children in school instead of quarantining them at home.

There is more:

The fifth thing we’re doing — we’re going to accelerate our efforts to vaccinate the rest of the world and strengthening — strengthen the international travel rules for people coming to the United States.

They’re coming for the children:

[W]e’re expanding our efforts to vaccinate children ages five and up. For any parent worried about Omicron variant or the Delta variant, get your child vaccinated at one of 35,000 locations in the country, including doctors’ offices, pharmacies, children’s hospitals, and 9,000 pop-up clinics at schools.

If you’re wondering where to go, again, visit Vaccines.com[Vaccines.gov].

And they’re coming after the toddlers and babies on board:

We know parents of children under the age of five are wondering when the vaccine will be available for their little ones. That’s the question I most get often asked now at functions.

We had a function celebrating Hanukkah and Christmas and various things at the White House. The parents coming up to me, they’re saying, “I have a three-year-old. Is there going to be a time that that can — am I going to be okay? Is she going to be okay — or he going to be okay?”

And let me say this: I strongly support the independent scientific review of vaccine usage for children under five. We can’t tak- — take shortcuts with that scientific work.

But I’ll do everything in my power to support the FDA to do this safely and quickly as possible when we get to that — to that point.

Vaccinating our children is also critical to keeping our schools open. But while over 99 percent of schools are open now, we need to make sure we keep that throughout the winter — this winter.

Man the lifeboats!

Incidentally, the second American to be diagnosed with the Omicron variant is a Minnesotan who recently traveled to New York. He was fully vaccinated (including a booster). Kevin Roche comments in “The moronic variant comes to Minnesota — tine for super-panic!!”

In her weekly Wall Street Journal column Kim Strassel rightly characterizes the scenario as a “quagmire.” We are trapped in a permanent state of war. Success is not in sight. As I say, man the lifeboats.

WSJ reports what I said

The unemployment rate declined to 4.2% in November and the share of people either working or looking for work rose, a positive sign for the economy.

If it goes down to 3.2 % it will be the same as Trump before the pandemic, you will say it is a fucking lie.....

'What wannabe totalitarian, fascist dictators do': Alarm over DeSantis move to form his own 'personal militia'

How a Ron DeSantis spokesperson pandered to ‘anti-vaxxers’ and anti-Semitic ‘conspiracy nuts’:

 David Badash

December 03, 2021

Critics are responding with alarm to news Florida GOP Governor Ron DeSantis is asking for millions of taxpayer funds to create his own militia force, separate from the existing National Guard.

CNN calls it "a World War II-era civilian military force that he, not the Pentagon, would control." And while the law allows for the move, it was created "as a temporary force to fill the void left behind" when the state's National Guard was deployed overseas, and "disbanded after the war ended."

But the highly-controversial Florida Republican, seen as one of the top 2024 GOP presidential candidates, is also making clear his motives are a further escalation in his war of words against the Biden administration.

"DeSantis also said this unit, called the Florida State Guard, would be 'not encumbered by the federal government.' He said this force would give him 'the flexibility and the ability needed to respond to events in our state in the most effective way possible.'"

Scott's next Trump is more dangerous because he's a governor and they have National Guard troops under his command.

Because it will be inextricably linked to a significantly lower labor participation rate, alky.

That's the fucking POINT.

If your path to a lower unemployment rate requires lower labor participation, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.

Now, I don't expect you to understand ANY of this, but that is the reality, whether you like it or not.

As Steve Rattner, who served as auto-industry czar in the Obama administration, explains, “It’s still hard to get a new iPhone quickly, but the good news is that the supply bottlenecks are showing signs of easing.” While the appearance of a new coronavirus variant could affect progress and not all supply chain issues have been resolved, Rattner argues that “for now, we can be at least a little bit hopeful.”

so basically the best a Democratic operative can do is suggest that we are "seeing signs" that things will be improving and that we can be a little bit hopeful?

Islamophobic attacks by some of its members against a Democratic congresswoman who is Muslim.

I wonder if they are referring to the anti-semite who started crying when the house passed funding to help Israel pay for their self defense system so that less Jews would be killed by Palestinians.

You know the anti-semite who literally wants to see Jews die?

Is that the one you cannot criticize because morons like you will refer to the criticism as Islamophobic?

and you wonder why your Party is about to take an epic beating and why the idiot in chief continues to lose support. You have nothing anymore but cheap insults.

Plague Upon Our House: My Fight at the Trump White House to Stop COVID from Destroying America, by Scott W. Atlas (Bombardier Books, 328 pp., $28)

How could public officials vowing to “follow the science” on Covid-19 persist in promoting ineffective strategies with terrible consequences? In a memoir of his time on the White House Coronavirus Task Force, Scott W. Atlas provides an answer: because the nation’s governance was hijacked by three bureaucrats with scant interest in scientific research or debate—and no concern for the calamitous effects of their edicts.

Atlas’s book, A Plague Upon Our House, is an astonishing read, even for those who have been closely following this disaster. A veteran medical researcher and health-policy analyst at the Hoover Institution, Atlas, a radiologist, joined the Task Force six months into the pandemic, after he had published estimates that lockdowns could ultimately prove more deadly than Covid.

Atlas expected to spend his time at the White House discussing scientific data and debating the best strategies for protecting public health. Instead, he found that the Task Force included “zero public health policy experts and no experts with medical knowledge who also analyzed economic, social, and other broad public health impacts other than the infection itself.” Vice President Mike Pence chaired the Task Force, but Atlas says that Pence and the other members were regularly cowed into submission by three doctors who dominated from the start: Deborah Birx, the Task Force’s coordinator, along with Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control.

Atlas calls them “the troika” because of their strategy for presenting a united front, never disagreeing with one another during the meetings in the White House Situation Room. (Reporting later revealed that they had made a pact to resign in unison if any of them was fired.) These veterans of the federal bureaucracy had worked closely together during the AIDS epidemic, and their track record was hardly reassuring. Their long and costly quest to develop an AIDS vaccine ultimately failed, but they did manage to persuade the public that AIDS would spread widely beyond gay men and intravenous drug users. Redfield, with some help from Fauci, was the chief prophet of a “heterosexual breakout,” a threat that terrified Americans for more than a decade but never materialized.

The Real Coldheartedtruth said...

The troika stoked more needless fears during the Covid pandemic, continually emphasizing worst-case scenarios—the computer models, for example, that wrongly forecast millions of American deaths in the summer of 2020. Surveys showed that most Americans, especially young people, vastly overestimated their risk of serious disease. Yet Fauci still wasn’t satisfied, as Atlas discovered when Fauci complained during one meeting that Americans didn’t take the virus seriously. “I challenged him to clarify his point,” Atlas writes, “because I couldn’t believe my ears. ‘So you think people aren’t frightened enough?’ He said, ‘Yes, they need to be more afraid.’ To me, this was another moment of Kafkaesque absurdity. . . . Instilling fear in the public is absolutely counter to what a leader in public health should do. To me, it is frankly immoral, although I kept that to myself.”

Fauci got the most media attention of the troika, but Atlas thinks that Birx did the most damage. As Pence’s chief subordinate on the Task Force, she shaped its agenda, participated in the regular “Covid huddle” with White House officials, and traveled the country, successfully pressuring state and local leaders to issue mask mandates and close businesses and schools. In one of Atlas’s first meetings with her, he asked her what she considered the strongest scientific evidence for the efficacy of masks against Covid. She cited a report published by the Centers for Disease Control about a hair salon in Missouri, where two stylists infected with Covid had worn masks that supposedly prevented the virus from infecting their customers.

Conspiracy theories are very predictable and again quite often work for political purposes
