Scientists apparently disagree on what the new variant actually is
So apparently scientists in Denmark and the UK believe that the Omicron variant will produce the worst period of this entire pandemic. The sort of figures they are predicting are chilling and almost a bit unbelievable.
In Denmark, they are prepping for the possibility of seeing 500-800 new Covid patients a day. The most patients the entire country had had at any given time was 1000. That means that their hospitalization rates could be somewhere between five times the peak to ten times the peak. In our case, think 50k or more new hospitalizations every day.
In the UK, their scientific community is bracing for the possibility of as many as 6000 deaths... a day? That would be the equivalent of 30,000 dead here in a single day. Even at their low end, they are projecting 600 deaths a day or the equivalent of 3000 deaths here.
On the flip side, the cases in South Africa already appear to have peaked and possibly are even going down. Some are suggesting that the worst is behind them and that other areas of the world will see a similar reprieve in similar time. This would seem consistent with scientists who suggest that while the Omicron variant is more infectious, that the cases are actually milder. This is the suggestion we have heard from many Americans in the scientific and medical community, and even the Biden Administration itself.
Of course there are some explanations that might not imply that the worst is behind South Africa. One being the idea that with limited resources and limited funding that the South Africans are just running out of the necessary tests, so they really don't know how many people are actually positive. There is also a believe that the milder nature of the strain is such that some people might not get tested, even if they have it. We may not know for sure what the reality is there.
So what is real and what is fiction? Are the scientists in Denmark and the UK correct and we are looking at a completely devastating winter, or are the numbers coming out of South Africa both real and a foreshadow that the strain might be of the milder form (as has been the suggestion coming from the Biden administration).

These numbers almost beggar belief. But here they are. According to a Monday CDC report, 73% of COVID infections in the US are now Omicron. Specifically, that was the percentage for the week ending December 18th. The rate of growth of new cases in the New York City metropolitan area has been mind-boggling. So extremely high percentages of Omicron here don’t surprise me at all. (I’ve heard informally that the rates here are roughly 90%.) But nationwide it almost beggars belief, even though we’ve seen comparable trajectories in the UK and Denmark.
So over the first two and one half weeks of December, the percentage of new Covid cases caused by the Omicron variant rose from the very low single digits to 73%. This is what exponential growth looks like. But the US is a big, big country. The analog to the continental US is Europe as a whole not one or two medium sized or small nation-states. There’s certainly regional variation in the US, as this second graph illustrates. But it’s still a staggering rate of spread. It’s already dominant in most regions. It’s seems almost certain that Delta will be close to extinguished in the US by the end of the month.
The more reassuring news is that we now have a growing body of evidence that this wave produces significantly less mortality and hospitalization as a percentage of cases than previous waves. Whether that is because this variant is intrinsically less lethal or because it’s spreading so rapidly through a population where the overwhelming majority of people have some level of immunity is not clear. But the precise mechanism seems secondary to the observed fact. It’s also true that at least in South Africa the outbreak in Gauteng province peaked after roughly four weeks – about half as long as previous outbreaks. These are both encouraging signs.
But even with decreased severity the sheer scale of this wave will still lands tens of thousands in hospitals and kill a lot of people. So at a population level it’s still a big deal even if the threat to people individually, especially if they’re vaccinated and boosted, is much less.
We should remember that for all the encouraging data about severity this strain was only identified about six weeks ago. We should be skeptical of anyone who claims a high level of confidence about predictions for the future.

The death reported this afternoon was of a man between the ages of 50-60 years old who was
unvaccinated and had been infected with COVID-19 previously. The individual was at higher risk of
severe complications from COVID-19 due to his unvaccinated status and had underlying health
conditions.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the patient’s family, and we extend our deepest sympathies,” said
Barbie Robinson, HCPH Executive Director. “This is a reminder of the severity of COVID-19 and its
variants. We urge all residents who qualify to get vaccinated and get their booster shot if they have not

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported that the Omicron variant is
widespread. There is still a lot of unknown information about the Omicron variant, though this case has
been confirmed through additional testing that may not reflect the total number of cases in our

Variants are mutations or changes to the genes of the original virus and there are currently several
notable COVID-19 variants in the U.S. The Omicron variant was first identified in South Africa in
November 2021 and currently is a concern for public health.
HCPH recommends all individuals five years and older get vaccinated as soon as possible. To be
protected against all current COVID-19 variants, including Omicron, individuals must be fully
vaccinated and get a booster shot when they are eligible. Being vaccinated provides the best protection
from developing complications or death resulting from COVID-19.

First off, HCPH states the man was unvaccinated but did he receive any doses of the COVID-19 jab? The CDC still considers you unvaccinated if you’ve only had one dose for the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 jabs. The agency says you’re not fully vaccinated until two weeks past your second dose.
What about HCPH’s definition of vaccinated and unvaccinated? Does HCPH consider you unvaccinated if you haven’t received a booster? Even though HCPH says the deceased individual is unvaccinated, we don’t know if he received any COVID-19 injections.
Next, how severe were the man’s underlying conditions, and how did his co-morbidities factor into his death? Was this another case of dying with and not of COVID-19?
Lastly, how does the HCPH know that this man had the omicron variant? Is there a PCR test that specifically identifies omicron? I thought COVID tests weren’t able to differentiate between SARS-CoV2 and influenza. All of a sudden, tests can pick out a specific variant?
This press release tells us nothing!
HCPH’s report about the first omicron-variant COVID-19 death is a fearmongering propaganda campaign. It reads more like a Big Pharma-funded vaccine advertisement. The ambiguous press release tells us nothing about the real cause of death.

(CNN) President Joe Biden will announce today a purchase of a half-billion at-home rapid Covid-19 tests and a plan to distribute them free to Americans who request them through a website, one of a series of new steps he'll unveil as the country faces a potentially crippling wintertime surge of infections.
The 500 million new tests will be made available next month and will reach Americans through the mail, the official said. The administration is still working to determine how many tests each household may request.
The new test shipment scheme will come during remarks meant to underscore the White House's plan to confront what is expected to be a large spike in cases driven by the now-dominant Omicron variant in the coming weeks. Already, cases are rising rapidly in areas around the country and hospitals are nearing capacity.
Among the President's new initiatives is a plan to prepare 1,000 military service members to deploy to overburdened hospitals across the country in January and February, administration officials said. Those service members will include doctors, nurses, medics and other military medical personnel.
An official said, "God willing" the full 1,000 wouldn't be needed, "but if we do, they are ready and they're mobilized."
Biden hopes to reassure Americans that if they are vaccinated, they can still proceed with their holiday plans without fear of becoming seriously ill. Conversely, he wants to tell those who have not yet received shots of the potential for severe illness or death in the coming months.

Johnson & Johnson has fallen out of favor as blood clotting issues are being discovered, the CDC is beginning to admit that vaccines can cause heart issues in younger Americans, the omicron variant appears to be immune to the vaccines, and the CDC is indicating that it will take 75 years to release its data on the Pfizer vaccine.
Despite these effects, it’s still full speed ahead: The CDC merely recommends that people take the mRNA vaccines over Johnson & Johnson, that younger Americans continue to take the shots despite the risks, and that all Americans continue to place unmerited trust in “the science.”
Those that have held out thus far are beginning to see the return on their investment. These individuals resisted the gimmicks, the name-calling, the shaming, the threats, the emotional and national blackmail, and now they are hardened and battle-tested for the fight ahead. As this next ‘variant’ of political and medical hysteria begins to wash across the land, these unvaccinated individuals should continue to hold the line and do what is best for their bodies and for their families, come what may.
