Just a quick bit of math...

Purple Pennsylvania county by county covid death toll

I chose Pennsylvania because quite frankly it was the easiest state to gather the statistics and because as a purple state that voted fairly closely to the overall country as a whole. So it made sense that it could provide a pretty good indication of the country as a whole, given the 50-50 nature of both the state and the country. To be honest, I don't have the time to go through all 50 states.

So what I found is this:

Joe Biden won 13 counties in Pennsylvania versus 54 counties won by Trump. This is not an unusual statistic as Democrats dominate the larger urban counties, while Republicans tend to do better in the suburban and rural counties. Obviously Biden had to win those 13 counties by a much bigger margin than Trump won those 54 counties on average... or he would not have gotten more votes.

But in spite of only winning 13 counties, those Biden counties accounted for approximately 17,500 deaths. The total number of deaths in the 54 Trump counties accounted for approximately 18,700 deaths. So there were  1346 deaths per Biden county versus 344 deaths per Trump county.  By argument sake, in the state of Pennsylvania, Trump counties accounted for about 1.06 times the number of deaths from Biden counties.

According to numbers you see repeated by Daily Kos, Politicalwire, Slate, and other liberal propaganda organizations, the vast majority of deaths are occuring in "Trump counties". Like the tale that grows taller  that number seems to increase exponentially. It started out with a reasonable almost believable number (perhaps something like what we see here).  But the last time I saw it repeated, it stated that Trump counties have accounted for something like five to six times the amount of deaths as the Biden counties.

Certainly if this was true nationally, it would be true in Pennsylvania.

Just for kicks, I checked New Jersey because they also have easy to find numbers and limited counties. Biden counties made up 12,667 deaths versus Trump counties making up 2441 deaths. So that actually is Biden counties having over five times as many dead as Trump counties (in spite of Biden only winning the state by 16%).  So this 5-1 ratio does exist, just not as people are suggesting.

Perhaps it is just me... but I am skeptical of these county statistics.

While the messenger RNA COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer Inc.-BioNTech SE and Moderna Inc. have been successful in preventing severe illness and death, neutralizing antibodies fall significantly over six months after vaccination, making boosters necessary — particularly against the omicron variant.

In contrast, the vaccine that Kohara is spearheading can produce potent neutralizing antibodies within a week of inoculation and induce the strongest cellular immunity of any vaccine, he says. That would be significant as none of the currently available COVID-19 vaccines appear to offer long-term protection.

Experiments on mice using the recombinant vaccinia virus encoding the highly pathogenic avian flu HA gene have shown high antibody levels that were maintained for more than 20 months, or nearly the average life span of a mouse, and all vaccinated mice infected with the avian flu 20 months post-vaccination survived. In contrast, the unvaccinated mice all died.

The United States should very carefully consider immigration reform like Ronald Reagan did.

It is one of the most worrisome economic statistics of a year that was full of them: In 2021, according to the Census Bureau, the U.S. population grew at the slowest rate in recorded history.

This poor performance was due to slowing immigration, low birth rates, and of course a high number of deaths from COVID-19. Total population grew by just 0.1%, or 392,665. Even measured in absolute terms, that increase is smaller than during the confluence of World War I and the Spanish flu pandemic.

Inflation and unemployment rates get a lot of attention, justifiably. But this macroeconomic news ought to be of at least equal concern. That’s because — in economies as well as careers — what’s important is not only the level of achievement but also the momentum. The goal is to have a series of ascending successes pushing you toward successively stronger positions.

For all its flaws, the United States is a marvelous collection of invented and evolved institutions. It took a lot of work to get here. At the margin, it costs relatively little to allow more people to enjoy and benefit from America’s Constitution, its favorable business environment and its nuclear umbrella. In the terminology of economics, the U.S. is a public good. Allowing more people in the country is like allowing more people to fill the empty seats in a theater for an excellent performance: Why not?

One simple implication is that the more patriotic you are, the more you ought to believe in a large and growing population. Most of America’s founders certainly had that expectation. Alternately, you might think there is nothing special about American institutions, as many a cynic has argued, and be indifferent about the size of its population. But to arrive at that conclusion, you have to deny there is significant value in the basic American framework.

A growing population also brings practical advantages. Consider the year’s debate over the effect of stimulus on inflation. It doesn’t seem, with a 6.8% inflation rate, that America quite got the balance right. With a significantly growing population, macroeconomic policy is much easier. The growing demands of an increasing number of workers and consumers is itself a form of economic stimulus. But these demands are not in general inflationary, because they are offset by more work and higher output. Those boosts in supply will tend to offset inflationary pressures, and they also will maintain economic growth. A significantly growing population is a kind of macroeconomic free lunch.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

More anecdotally, have you ever visited a city and felt a sense of stagnation and decline? For me, that feeling is more common in a city that is losing residents rather than gaining them. There seem to be fewer and less diverse restaurants, theaters, even street musicians.

In contrast, the most exciting states, cities and neighborhoods have lots of new venues and new people. Over the last decade the three fastest growing states, in percentage terms, are Utah, Idaho and Texas. I’ve recently visited the latter two and felt a palpable sense of excitement and ambition.

The relationship between population and dynamism holds at the national level as well, though it is harder to see because declines are not always so concentrated in a single geographic locale. But a country’s mood cannot help but be affected by how many people it has and their ability to make unique contributions to society.

America’s population is not declining right now, but it is not doing much better than holding steady. That brings its own mood of stasis and complacency. And let me be so bold as to suggest that, more than most countries, America is highly dependent on its own sense of optimism and growth. Otherwise, how is it to remain a top innovator? How will it pay off all its debts?

The most common argument against a growing population is that it harms the environment. But any potential solutions to environmental problems involve innovation, and more people means more potential innovators. It is the growing, dynamic societies that are most likely to improve green energy.

Yes, America is in a funk, and low population growth is both a cause and symptom. But this crisis need not be permanent — and one way to solve it is simply to make and bring in more happy people.

Trump filled a void in a part of America that continues to yearn for a strongman who will deliver it from despair. You have supported him since he was nominated by the Republican party in 2016. Because he's a strong leader.

A similar void haunts other nations where democracy is imperiled. Eastern Europe is going through the same things.

It's not a coup. Because they are using our state federal government system.

The challenge ahead for the US as elsewhere is to fill that void with hope rather than neofascism. This is the real meaning of 6 January.

If the Republicans win, we will become a neo fascist country.

He is the one constantly repeating the statistics that so many more people are dying in Trump counties than Biden counties. I just wanted to do some quick spot checking to see if it is true.

I am not making any argument that either Trump counties or Biden counties are doing better or worse. I would suggest that based purely on the data that we know... that counties that have more nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and larger elderly populations in general would see more deaths than places where the people are younger.

I don't believe there is any real evidence that Covid is a partisan issue that kills more Republicans than Democrats. That is a fantasy pushed extremely hard by the extremely unhappy liberals.

every single word is correct about that time in Rapid City! And don't forget the milk man!

I grew up in Rapid City South Dakota I was raised by middle income parents during a time when most everyone treated each other with respect. We didn't eat a lot of fast food because it was considered a treat, not a food group. We drank Kool-Aid made from water that came from our kitchen sink with real sugar. We ate bologna sandwiches, or even tuna (which was in a can not a pouch), PB&J & grilled cheese sandwiches, hot dogs, pot pies, but mostly homemade meals consisting of mainly dough, meat, potatoes, vegetable, bread & butter, and homemade dessert.
We grew up during a time when we mowed lawns, pulled weeds, babysat, helped neighbors with chores to be able to earn our own money. we went outside a lot to play games, ride bikes, red rover, dodge ball, run with siblings and friends & played hide and seek. We drank tap water from the hose outside... bottled water was unheard of. If we had a coke -it was in a glass bottle ... and we took the empties back to the store for a 5 cent deposit.
We watched TV shows like Bonanza, Leave It To Beaver, Gilligan's Island, Happy Days, Bewitched, The Brady Bunch, Little House On The Prairie, and I Love Lucy. After school, we came home and did homework and chores before going outside or having friends over. We would ride our bikes for hours. We had to tell our parents where we were going, who we were going with, and what time we'd be back.
You LEARNED from your parents instead of disrespecting them and treating them as if they knew absolutely nothing. What they said was LAW and you did not question it, and you had better know it!!!
When the sun was starting to set you had better be home. In school we listened to our teachers.
We watched what we said around our elders because we knew if we DISRESPECTED any grown-up we would get our behinds whipped, it wasn't called abuse, it was called discipline! We held doors, carried groceries and gave up our seat for an older person without being asked. You didn't hear curse words on the radio in songs or TV, and if you cursed and got caught you had a bar of soap stuck in your mouth and had to stand in the corner. “Please, Thank you, yes please no thank you were part of our daily vocabulary!
You grew up to respect the Nation.
Re-post if you're thankful for your childhood and will never forget where you came from & the time you came from! Wouldn't it be nice if it were possible to get back to this way of life? I really liked that life!!!!!!!!!🇺🇸

Since May 2021, people living in counties that voted heavily for Donald Trump during the last presidential election have been nearly three times as likely to die from COVID-19 as those who live in areas that went for now-President Biden. That's according to a new analysis by NPR that examines how political polarization and misinformation are driving a significant share of the deaths in the pandemic.

NPR looked at deaths per 100,000 people in roughly 3,000 counties across the U.S. from May 2021, the point at which vaccinations widely became available. People living in counties that went 60% or higher for Trump in November 2020 had 2.73 times the death rates of those that went for Biden. Counties with an even higher share of the vote for Trump saw higher COVID-19 mortality rates.

In October, the reddest tenth of the country saw death rates that were six times higher than the bluest tenth, according to Charles Gaba, an independent health care analyst who's been tracking partisanship trends during the pandemic and helped to review NPR's methodology. Those numbers have dropped slightly in recent weeks, Gaba says: "It's back down to around 5.5 times higher."
