More bad news

The Labor Department said in its monthly payroll report released Friday that payrolls in November rose by just 210,000, well below the 550,000 jobs forecast by Refinitiv economists. The unemployment rate (which is calculated based on a separate survey) dropped more than expected to 4.2% from 4.6% — the lowest level since the pandemic began.
The figure marks a significant drop from October’s upwardly revised number of 546,000 and September’s upwardly revised 379,000. There are still about 3.9 million fewer jobs than there were last February, before the crisis began.

I woke up to alerts that the market was tanking again today... and here is why. More bad news on the economy. To the point now where I question whether we are at an investment opportunity or if we are headed for a real crash. There is a part of me that wonders if it's time to literally start a sell off to buy back at where it looks like we might be heading. For now, I think I am on a hold other than 401K long term fund investments that just come out of my paycheck. Sad, but true. I suddenly don't believe we have a solid floor right now. This thing feels like it could go sour in a hurry.

I'm with you. What started out looking like a buying opportunity is starting to look like a much more severe and durable decline in the economy.

Hiring Slowed Last Month but More Sought Work

The U.S. economy added 210,000 jobs in November, marking a slowdown in hiring amid new Covid-19 uncertainties, but a tight labor market showed an early sign of loosening as almost 600,000 people joined the workforce.

The U.S. economy added 210,000 jobs in November, marking a slowdown in hiring amid new Covid-19 uncertainties, but a tight labor market showed an early sign of loosening as almost 600,000 people joined the workforce. The increase in people seeking jobs, caused a lower increase in job percentage.

The slower pace of hiring last month—the smallest monthly gain since last December— followed an upwardly revised increase of 546,000 jobs in October, the Labor Department said. The unemployment rate fell to 4.2% as more people joined the labor force, the department added.

Economists had expected more than half a million new jobs in November. The unexpectedly low number could end up being revised higher later, said Aneta Markowska, chief economist at Jefferies LLC.

“The headline miss doesn’t really change what we thought about the labor market,” she said. “It’s still very healthy and it’s moving toward maximum employment very quickly.”

The low employment number, which comes from a Labor Department survey of businesses, contrasts with data from a separate survey of households, also released Friday, that showed strong progress in employment.

Friday’s moves continue a turbulent week for Wall Street, marked by big swings up and down. The S&P 500 is on track to log a move of at least 1% up or down for six consecutive sessions, the longest such streak since October 2020.

Though losses in the stock market have been broad-based, many highflying tech and growth stocks have badly underperformed. Shares of Meta Platforms, formerly Facebook, and Netflix have tumbled almost 10% each this week. The ARK Innovation ETF, which recently counted Tesla, Coinbase and Zoom Video Communications among its biggest holdings, has fallen 13%.

The Nasdaq is headed toward a 3.1% weekly loss. The S&P 500 and Dow are on track to fall around 1.5% and 1.2%, respectively, this week.

The variant has triggered fresh restrictions around the world, throwing up new obstacles to overseas travel just as it was starting to bounce back from last year’s Covid-19 measures. Scientists are trying to gauge how effective current vaccines will be against the variant.

“Omicron will absolutely affect growth in the next few months,” said Dev Kantesaria, founder of Valley Forge Capital.

The latest monthly jobs report, released Friday, highlighted how slower hiring threatens to cloud the economic recovery, though some analysts said they found some good news in the report. The report showed that employers added 210,000 jobs in November, below the 573,000 expected by economists polled by The Wall Street Journal. The unemployment rate declined to 4.2% in November and the share of people either working or looking for work rose, a positive sign for the economy.

“On balance I would still rate it a good report for the economy, despite the fact that the headline looks to be a miss,” said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer at Independent Advisor Alliance.

Modest early gains on Wall Street gave way to a technology-stock rout, after the U.S. jobs report renewed expectations that the Federal Reserve will end stimulus early next year.

The S&P 500 lost around 1.2%, dragged down by shares of tech companies. The index rallied Thursday despite uncertainty about the Omicron variant’s potential impact on the global economy. The tech-focused Nasdaq Composite lost 2.4%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.45%.

Friday’s moves continue a turbulent week for Wall Street, marked by big swings up and down. The S&P 500 is on track to log a move of at least 1% up or down for six consecutive sessions, the longest such streak since October 2020.

The sharp moves in tech stocks highlight how quickly investments that were widely-favored by individual and institutional investors alike have retreated, in some cases dragging the broader market lower.

The new variant has injected volatility into the stock market as investors were already weighing several other big risks such as inflation and the path of the economic recovery.

After a relatively placid stretch across financial markets, investors have been confronted with a litany of worries in recent weeks. Many investors are expecting the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates next year after a prolonged period of keeping interest rates near zero, policies that have helped send major indexes to record after record over the past year. Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta President Raphael Bostic said Thursday that the Fed should accelerate the pace of its drawdown, or tapering, of monthly bond purchases.

If the Fed raises the interest rates to decrease inflation, it would cause some damage to the economy. History has shown that since it was created. But if the economy continues to grow, and when the infrastructure jobs grow rapidly. The higher wages can balance against inflation kputz...

President Biden is doing a great job, but in this case because of the pandemic and the wannabe dictator Trump has made a big impact on the Republican party now his approval is very low. Prosecutors aim to prove the allegation at Reffitt's trial, which is tentatively scheduled for late February. He will be the first January 6 defendant to go to trial, and is facing five federal charges. He has pleaded not guilty, and has been in jail since his arrest in January.

Everytime you use that particular term (which we know you did not come up with on your own) as a means to "explain away" something that comes up... that is a classic garden variety example of someone who has been gaslighted.

Just like you believe that everyone who questions the election must be associated with everyone else involved in it. As if my statistical analysis of votes in Pennsylvania for example... can be discounted because Sidney Powell filed an election lawsuit that was unsuccessful or because the Pillow Guy said something that was likely untrue.

The fact that you continue to ignore what is sitting in front of you and use completely different factors and use expressions like "big lie" is all the proof needed to show that you are, indeed without question gaslighted by your Party and the media.

The fact that you believe I worship him is part of what convinces me how completely and totally out to lunch and gaslighted you are.

The reason you say this is entirely because it's like the "big lie" argument. Anytime someone disagrees with you, you can simply find someone else who has a similar belief and then tie the two together. In the media's case... they find something Trump advocates and then anyone else on the right who says anything similar is doing Trump's bidding.

It is logically an inarguable stance. It literally has no logical weight behind it. It's a 100% emotional argument designed to gaslight.

You, Roger... have obviously fallen for it.

On the flip side... at a time when only about 4 in 10 Americans approve of the President and only about 1 in 8-9 strongly approve of him, you find yourself in the overwhelming minority who believes he is doing (as you put it) a great job.

Ironically part of your argument was economic numbers that objectively made the entire market crash... but you argued was actually good.

(Reuters) -Authorities on Friday were searching for the parents of the Michigan teenager accused of murdering four students at his high school, hours after the couple was charged with involuntary manslaughter for buying their son the weapon as a Christmas gift and ignoring warning signs as late as the day of the shooting.

A fugitive warrant has been issued for James and Jennifer Crumbley, who had been scheduled for arraignment on four counts of manslaughter each later on Friday, three days after authorities say their 15-year-old son, Ethan, carried out the deadliest U.S. school shooting of 2021.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told CNN police were searching for the Crumbleys after the couple's attorney told his office that they have stopped responding to messages.

"If they think they're going to get away, they're not," Bouchard said, adding that a "host" of detectives, as well as the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service, were looking for them.

C.H. Truth said...

So Roger...

In your infinite wisdom, perhaps you can explain away the charts and science that shows that in the last 11 months we have had more vaccine deaths than we have had in the previous 29 years?

Assuming you cannot... then you must logically admit that there is a real risk of taking the vaccine. Not just death, but long term side effects that already include heart conditions and other respiratory problems. Since we generally wait about two years before a vaccine or drug hits the market, we don't yet know what we don't yet know. But what we do know is that this is not a safe vaccine by vaccine standards.

That being said, for people like you and I the risk of Covid far outweighs the risk of the vaccine. So it would be logical for people over 50 to take the vaccine in spite of the risks. Not so cut and dried that I would demand that I make that decision for others, but enough that I would recommend it for most people of that age.

But for a child that poses almost zero risk of serious illness or death from Covid... does it still make sense to inject them with a vaccine we know has serious side effects and is already scientifically been shown to be the most dangerous vaccine we have approved through the FDA?

If there is a greater risk of vaccination side effects than there is from what you are vaccinating against (Covid) - why does it make sense to take it?

And trust me... if you say that we need to put children at risk because there are adults who would feel safer that the children are vaccinated too (fuck the consequences to them) then I assure you that they are not Parents (or at least not good parents).

The only reason anyone would want to vaccinate their own children would be because they either do not understand the basic math involved (how few children see Covid problems vs the risks of the vaccine) or because they need to do it to allow their children to go to school (because of mandates).

Sorry Rog....

But this is over your head, likely. All you know is what the media and Biden administration tells you:

Vaccines perfectly safe and good and need to be taken by everyone. Even if this is demonstrably false, you will not listen to anything else.

No idea what you are yapping about. But it has nothing to do with anyone here or anything to do with this comment thread.

From what I can see, the article appears to be calling out the fact that our schools no longer put out people who can read, write, or do basic math at the same level as we used to... and instead of trying to fix it, some might believe that we need to make adjustments in the workforce to account for this fundamental lack of education. They suggest that high earning jobs are now going to people who only need to add, subtract, multiply and divide.

The point should be taken as such here, Roger. We cannot dumb down our basic society to account for those who are not learning. At least not without being completely steamrolled by the rest of the world who are actually teaching their children what they need to know to get jobs in engineering, computer science, etc.

Jobs that require no real skill but pay enormous amounts of money are simply not going to last to any degree. Not in any economy at any place at any time. Certain colleges can pretend as such, as they are not really required to make money like most businesses are. DEI consulting companies are not here to stay. They will be the first cut when businesses start to struggle and when all of this woke nonsense fades (as it definitely will).
