Way to go Joe!

400,000 dead from Covid under Joe Biden watch!

What a terrific milestone for the man who would stop Covid in its tracks!

There was a time when Joe Biden believed that 220,000 Americans dead from Covid was a disqualifier for a President to remain in office. Now he just points fingers and demands that nothing is his responsibility or his problem. He will likely surpass 220,000 by double before this is all said and done and will obviously not resign from embarrassment.

Meanwhile billions across the globe are being treated with a variety of medications that our government won't allow and our vaccination rates have been stuck in the low to mid 60s for some time. The stalling of the vaccination is something that anyone with the slightest bit of common sense could  have seen coming. But apparently we are unprepared for it.

Oh, and on top of all that, the latest variant seems to be hitting the vaccinated and unvaccinated just as hard, meaning we might just be back to square one. No more relying on the Trump vaccine to stop the spread. Covid leaders are not calling for boosters without obviously having any data on the Omicron variant to know if that will even help. They (of course) say it is "expected" to help, but we don't even have enough to make a guess, much less know.

ALBERT SMITH IRISH INDEPENDENT (CLINTON FOUNDATION OUTLET)

Albert Smith Irish independent Journalist and alleged owner of parpoint publishing admitted in a court case under duress that he assaulted a person over an alleged “litter” incident in which a laptop hard drive was destroyed.A neighbour was filmed and taped on camera admitting that he heard Smith screaming at a person during the assault. The reason we belive Smith admitted in court an incident occured was because The police themselves had access to the film along with a statement and he also knew his neighbor had turned states on him.

That said and done a number of issues remain to this day that are points of evidence the first and most important are the failings in court by the Judge and police to administrate legal proceedings against Smith for assault and destruction of a hard drive. In law should a person admit to an offense in court it does not make them imune to prosecution, Sergeant John Heraughty who was present at the hearing questioned Smith prior to the hearing who initially denied an assault ever took place and the Judge had the affadavit and film evidence to hand at the hearing.Sergeant john heraughty within law should have stood up in court and stated clearly to the Judge at the point when Smith admitted the incident occured that Smith had lied to him prior to the hearing in stating to him personally there was no incident, however for what ever reason Sergeant Heraughty remained silent in court about his own personal questioning of the matter and subsequently purposely did not provide prosecutable evidence against Smith in court which can be classified as a federal offense in the US.As for the Judge we question as to why he did not immedietly detain and hold smith for admitting to committing a criminal offense during court proceedings that of the criminal offense of liening to a police officer.

A House oversight panel found former President Donald Trump and his administration routinely undermined efforts to fight the coronavirus pandemic last year, prolonging a deadly public health disaster in the hopes of winning an election he eventually lost.

The conclusion was part of a 46-page report released Friday by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis. The report collated documents that had largely been released in the preceding months, including documents showing that the Trump administration prevented public officials from giving public briefings on the virus and attempted to play down the importance of testing.

But it also showed the Trump administration’s malfeasance throughout the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in new ways, including the ways they infuriated public health officials who felt they couldn’t do their jobs.

A new report reveals a century-old American aristocracy — and it's time to tear it down

John Stoehr

December 17, 2021

The United States was founded on the idea of freedom by right, not freedom by bloodline. But that has not stopped the super-rich from creating what can only be called an American aristocracy. So much of our politics is shaped by a few hundred families, the .01 percent. Many of them can trace their wealth and power to the late 19th century.

This week, ProPublica posted a barn-burning report on fortunes amassed by the robber barons of old that are still going strong, generations later, in the 21st century. That’s thanks to a federal tax code designed and maintained in large part by our feudal overlords, whose sons and daughters, and institutions, define politics, even what constitutes private property rights and whose job is to protect them.

“The estate tax has eroded to the point that last year the estates of just 1,275 people in the whole country owed the tax — down from a peak of 139,000 in 1976 — despite historic amassing of wealth by the very richest,” according to the report, “The Great Inheritors: How Three Families Shielded Their Fortunes From Taxes for Generations.”

To understand the ideas behind the making of this aristocracy, and how it imperils any common sense notion of democracy, I got in touch with Barry Lam. He’s a professor of philosophy at Vassar College. He produces and hosts “Hi-Phi Nation,” a podcast about “philosophy in story form that integrated narrative journalism with big ideas.” We started with the ProPublica report. I ask him for his big takeaway.

Barry Lam: It should be not that tax law is trying to keep up with tax avoidance, but that tax law is in many ways designed for tax avoidance. Byzantine tax laws exist to benefit those who designed it and those with lawyers and estate planners clever enough to shield money. This has been going on since at least the end of the 19th century.

Top down economics will reverse our country and build a middle class of record percentages

Was it written in crayon with pretty pictures alky?

God, you are such a fucking rube. We have the fucking vaccine that you clowns are so desperate to mandate because of Trump, but the House Subcommittee on Asshattery and Douchebaggery couldn't give him a drop of credit.

It took them 46 whole pages to say "Trump SUCKS!!!" Fuck, i could've scrawled that on the back of an envelope.

Hack, hack, hack.

LOL.

Pssst... this is why everyone laughs at you and no one takes you seriously alky.

Put another way: The authoritarian drift we are experiencing in this country is being financed by the .01 percent, whose wealth is being protected by tax laws passed with the consent of the other 99.9 percent. In a democracy, we're all responsible and complicit.

BL: I think so. What’s interesting about the intergenerational case that the ProPublica piece highlights is that no one can make a good faith argument that inheritance is a matter of earning. In what way does an offspring, or a fifth generation descendant earn anything as a matter of merit? Even the most ardent libertarians historically have had a very difficult time explaining why intergenerational wealth transfer is a reflection of merit, earning and justly acquired property rights.

Some of the most free market libertarians have, for instance, thought hard and concluded that there should be a 100 percent estate tax with all of the money distributed as a universal basic income. This is from people who hate taxation and have the highest admiration for ownership, markets, and keeping the government out of these things.

JS: I agree with the libertarians on that one.

BL: They're thinking like actual squirrels.

JS: Thank you so much for your time.

BL: No problem. Thanks.

A Pandemic of the Vaccinated.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced this weekend that 80 percent of COVID-19 “Omicron variant” cases are found in so-called “fully vaccinated” individuals. Forty-seven percent of Omicron cases – which are far milder than original COVID-19 cases – are found in those who received the first round of vaccinations, and with 33 percent of cases found in people with both vaccination and booster shots.

Only 19 percent of cases were identified in unvaccinated individuals.

A Florida man who hurled a fire extinguisher at police officers during some of the most ferocious fighting at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 was sentenced on Friday to more than five years in prison, the longest term handed down so far to any of the more than 700 people charged in the attack.

The defendant, Robert Palmer, made his way to the Capitol that day in a distinctive red-white-and-blue flag-styled jacket after listening to President Donald J. Trump address a huge crowd at the Ellipse, a park just south of the White House. Prosecutors say he milled about in the crowd outside the building as violence increasingly broke out between the police and rioters.

By a little before 5 p.m., Mr. Palmer found himself amid the most severe fighting at the lower west terrace, where an almost medieval form of hand-to-hand combat had erupted. There, prosecutors say, he threw a wooden plank-like spear at the police, sprayed a fire extinguisher at officers and then hurled the empty canister at them.

As concerns and political criticism rise over a rash of brazen retail thefts across California, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday announced a package of grants for police agencies and prosecutors to crack down on the organized crime rings believed to be largely responsible.

Newsom said the $270 million in grant money, as well as $25 million for small businesses victimized by theft, will be in his proposed budget when it's released in January. Since the governor's spending plan isn't likely to be approved by state lawmakers until June, however, that money will not be immediately available.

Rhode Island has 86% of their population with at least one vaccine and 75% fully vaccinated and currently lead the nation in cases per 100,000

New Hampshire has 93% of their population with at least one vaccine and are in second place for cases per 100,000.

Trump White House made 'deliberate efforts' to undermine Covid response, report says

The White House repeatedly overruled public health and testing guidance from the nation’s top infectious disease experts and silenced officials, the report found.

Dec. 17, 2021, 12:02 PM CST
By Rebecca Shabad

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration engaged in “deliberate efforts” to undermine the U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic for political purposes, a congressional report released Friday concludes.

The report, prepared by the House select subcommittee investigating the nation’s Covid response, says the White House repeatedly overruled public health and testing guidance by the nation’s top infectious disease experts and silenced officials in order to promote then-President Donald Trump's political agenda.

Dr. Deborah Birx testified the Trump WH could have reduced Covid deaths by 30 to 40 percent

In August of last year, for example, Trump hosted a White House meeting with people who promoted a herd immunity strategy pushed by White House special adviser Dr. Scott Atlas. The subcommittee obtained an email sent ahead of that meeting in which Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House Covid response coordinator, told the vice president’s chief of staff, Marc Short, that it was “a fringe group without grounding in epidemics, public health or on the ground common sense experience.” Birx also said in the email that she could “go out of town or whatever gives the WH cover” on the day of the meeting.

A few months later in October, National Institutes of Health Director Dr. Francis Collins called for “a quick and devastating published take down” of the herd immunity strategy, according to emails obtained and released by the subcommittee.

In an interview with the subcommittee, Birx said when she arrived to the White House in March 2020 — more than a month after the U.S. declared a public health emergency — she learned that federal officials had not yet contacted some of the largest U.S. companies that could supply Covid testing.

Birx also told the panel that Atlas and other Trump officials “purposely weakened CDC’s coronavirus testing guidance in August 2020 to obscure how rapidly the virus was spreading across the country,” the report said. The altered guidance recommended that asymptomatic people didn’t need to get tested, advice that was "contrary to consensus science-based recommendations," it said, adding, "Dr. Birx stated that these changes were made specifically to reduce the amount of testing being conducted.

Altas did not immediately respond to NBC News' request for comment.

The subcommittee also found in its investigation that the Trump White House blocked requests from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct public briefings for more than three months. That move followed a late-February 2020 briefing in which a top CDC official "accurately warned the public about the risks posed by the coronavirus," it said.

Another CDC official told the panel that the agency asked to hold a briefing in April 2020 on a recommendation to wear cloth face coverings and present evidence of pediatric cases and deaths from Covid, but the Trump White House refused.

Documents obtained by the committee also show that Trump political appointees tried to pressure the Food and Drug Administration to authorize ineffective Covid treatments the president was pushing, like hydroxychloroquine and convalescent plasma, over the objections of career scientists, the report said.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

In addition, Dr. Steven Hatfill, an adviser to former White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, “may have declined leads to purchase supplies like N95 masks in the spring 2020 solely because the products were not manufactured in the United States," the subcommittee said.

In a statement provided to NBC on Friday, Hatfill said that the administration began sourcing personal protective equipment in early 2020. He said "the most logical and efficient choice was to seek U.S.-based manufacturers' help."

"At the time, profiteers were peddling defective and fraudulent PPE at inflated prices directly to the public," he said. "Even states such as California and New Mexico fell prey to these schemes, but we had no time to waste at the federal level. Even the shortest delay could cost thousands of lives. That was a risk we were not willing to take. Our choice to buy American goods saved lives and the United States taxpayer's money."

Dr. Jay Butler, a senior CDC official who helped supervise the agency’s coronavirus response during the spring of 2020, told the subcommittee in an interview that the Trump administration published guidance for faith communities in May of last year that “softened some very important public health recommendations,” such as removing all references to face coverings, a suggestion to suspend choirs, and language related to virtual services. Butler told the panel that “the concerns he had about Americans getting sick and potentially dying because they relied on this watered-down guidance ‘will haunt me for some time,’” the report said.

The revelations in the panel's report come as Covid cases surge across the country as the U.S. battles the new omicron and the delta variants.

Sorry, Ch, but neither Biden nor Trump nor you nor I nor anybody else foresaw the emergence of Delta and now Omicron strains, complicating an already difficult situation which has continually been made more difficult by so many Republicans and Trump supporters refusing vaccinations and other safety measures.

But the evidence still indicates that emphsizing vaccinations and boosters plus some distancing and mask wearing are our best hope for eventually getting this thing where we want to get it.

Meanwhile, keep your eyes on the huge differences between death rates among Republicans as compared to the death rates among Democrats, and you can see clearly that survival is best assured by listening to Biden and the Democrats and not listening to Trump and the Republicans.

December 17, 2021 at 9:13 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 6 Comments

“The nation’s coronavirus testing capacity, already straining to keep up with demand, is facing enormous new pressure, with holiday travelers waiting in long lines to be tested, overworked laboratories struggling to keep up and rapid at-home diagnostics flying off pharmacy shelves as the Omicron variant fuels a rapid spike in Covid-19 cases,” the New York Times reports.

King Sleepy Joe Biden is leading the nation
A federal appeals panel on Friday reinstated a Biden administration rule requiring that many companies mandate their workers be vaccinated against the coronavirus or face weekly testing.

The decision, by a split three-judge panel of the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in Cincinnati, overturned a ruling by its counterpart in New Orleans, the Fifth Circuit, that had blocked the rule last month.

Issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the rule is expected to make its way to the Supreme Court. It has faced a wave of lawsuits from businesses, trade groups and states. The Biden administration has encouraged companies to move forward despite that uncertainty, particularly given the mounting threat of the Omicron variant and a surge of new cases across the country.

The rule, which President Biden first announced in September, orders that businesses with at least 100 employees have until Jan. 4 to mandate Covid vaccinations for their workers. They are also allowed, but not required unless the worker has an exemption for medical or religious reasons, to give their workers the option to be tested weekly.

OSHA has the authority to pass an “emergency temporary standard” provided it can show that workers are exposed to a “grave danger” and that the rule is necessary. The Sixth Circuit panel said on Friday that the agency had sufficiently demonstrated that the coronavirus pandemic meets that standard.

“OSHA explains why the mechanics of Covid-19 transmission make our traditional workplaces ripe for the spread of the disease, putting workers at heightened risk of contracting it,” wrote Judge Jane B. Stranch.

She added that the ruling cites “the possibility of new variants” to support OSHA’s argument that the current situation is a pervasive emergency, noting that the possibility of new variants cited by the agency when it issued the rule “has borne out with the Omicron variant.”

The fact that a virus is unpredictable plus the Delta variance and again you ignore history.

Way to go Sleepy Joe Joe according to TLS TLS infected Scott Johnson schizophrenia
A lot has changed for Omicron in just two weeks. At December’s onset, the variant was barely present in Europe, showing up in 1 to 2 percent of COVID cases. Now it’s accounting for 72 percent of new cases in London, where everybody seems to know somebody with COVID. In the U.K. and Denmark, Omicron case numbers are doubling every other day. The same exponential growth is happening—or will happen—in the United States too, just in time for the holidays.

It's his fault!!

The Real Coldheartedtruth said...

James how much longer do we have to wait until he blames Sleepy Joe Biden???

Vaccines are a Democrats haux will lower the proportion of hospitalizations quite a bit in those extra cases, especially because Omicron is infecting lots of vaccinated people. But it’s a long climb down that exponential curve. Moreover, when so many cases pile up all at once, their effects start spilling over into the lives of those who aren’t sick. If Omicron runs through a workplace it may present a temporary inconvenience. But if that workplace is a school, then the school will have to close, disrupting the lives of every child and parent. If that workplace is a hospital, then doctors and nurses are unable to work. This has been an issue in South Africa, where Omicron is already dominant and nearly 20 percent of the health-care staff have COVID. Even if most of these cases are mild, huge numbers of people getting sick all at once will alter everyday reality.

Not every case will be mild, though, and even a small hospitalization rate on top of a huge case number will be a big number. With Delta, “we were already headed for a bad winter,” says Roby Bhattacharyya, an infectious-diseases physician at Massachusetts General Hospital. Now, as my colleague Ed Yong reports, Omicron could push a collapsing health-care system further into disaster. Hospitals are already dealing with the flu and other winter viruses. They’re already canceling elective surgeries. After another year of pandemic burnout, they simply may not have the staff to create the surge capacity that barely got us through last winter. Overtaxed hospitals mean care gets worse for everyone with COVID—but also everyone with a broken hip or a stroke or a baby that urgently needs to be delivered. Omicron’s transmissibility is a danger because high levels of COVID cases come with these second-order consequences that transcend the risk to individuals.

If there are no changes to behavior or policy,by Sleepy Joe's Joe's hoax this year’s winter wave would peak at about double the hospitalizations of last winter at its worst, and 20 percent more deaths

C.H. Truth said...

Or was he just so stupid as to think that a virus would not mutate to other strains?

Ihave long been amazed at the GOP’s ability to sniff out the latest public moral panic, and to either identify or manufacture one wedge issue after another as a way to lock down their voters’ support. The party may be lousy at governing, but it’s certainly good at stirring up fear and cultural unease as a way to kick the legs out from underneath its political opponents.

When I was a kid, Reagan realized that many white voters could be made to feel resentful of African Americans on welfare, and so he hammered home a racist message about “welfare queens.” A decade later, California’s GOP Governor Pete Wilson zeroed in on fears of crime, affirmative action, and undocumented immigrants. The fearmongering was instrumental in his winning reelection. Fast forward more than 20 years, and Trump ginned up that same fear of immigrants, this time on a national scale, to new heights. In 2015, when he first entered the primary race, he told voters that immigrants were bringing crime and disease across America’s borders.

Today, the fear du jour is the teaching of critical race theory—which, more generally, stands in for anxiety about the teaching of the country’s oft-unpleasant history of race relations and of racist practices ranging from slavery to Jim Crow to stop-and-frisk and police violence against Black and brown residents.

Top ArticlesWho Are the Sons ofConfederate Veterans?

The GOP has been relentlessly hammering on the issue since the last presidential election, viewing it as the party’s way back into suburban voters’ good graces after the cretinous presidency of Donald J. Trump—even though I doubt that most voters, or politicians, have the foggiest idea what CRT actually is about or whether it really is taught in schools (spoiler alert: It’s a complex university-level theory, and generally isn’t taught in K-12 schools around the country). Blustering about CRT is in part how Glenn Yougkin won election as Virginia’s governor—though he was also given a huge leg up by his opponent, Terry McAuliffe, who ran a particularly useless, wet-blanket campaign.

The Real Coldheartedtruth said...

A drumbeat of doom-and-gloom prognostications about the dangers of CRT corrupting unformed young minds is certainly now a central part of the party’s strategy for Senate and House midterm races in 2022—and it’s one that is already bearing fruit in public opinion.

After months of nonstop propaganda about CRT, more than half of Americans polled say that the theory has no place in school classrooms. More astoundingly, in a particularly egregious example of amnesia-promotion, 40 percent of Republicans now believe that students should be taught nothing about the history of racism in the United States. And, increasingly, legislators and conservative activist groups are stepping up to the plate, circulating lists of books about race and racism that they want banned from schools. In Texas recently, a conservative state legislator circulated a list of 850 books about race and about sexual identity, demanding to know if they were on school library bookshelves—presumably so he could then propose legislation to ban them from being on those shelves. Fascist is as fascist does.

This is an example of magical thinking on a grand scale—the notion that the ugly realities of past and present can be simply wished away, that an alternative kumbayya story of color-blind social policy can be made real, can be made historically valid, by sheer force of will and by a continual monitoring of what impressionable young minds can and can’t read. It’s a dangerous dumbing down of the classroom, and can only make America’s already fractured race relations worse.

It’s also a toxic turn away from the open society. After all, the censorship and manipulation of history has always been part of the authoritarian tool kit. That’s why the Chinese government is currently rewriting history to ensure that Xi Jinping is seen by a new generation of students as a revolutionary on a par with Chairman Mao. It’s why Russia’s government, under President Vladimir Putin, has cracked down on groups that develop historical criticisms of the Soviet Union, even going to so far as to shut down the Museum of the Gulag. It’s why Erdogan’s government, in Turkey, makes it a crime to teach about the Armenian genocide.

The Real Coldheartedtruth said...

Now, the effort to bar intelligent teaching about how race and racism has helped shape American history is picking up speed once again in the United States, even in supposedly liberal bastions such as California.

Over the past few weeks, a recall effort against three Tustin School Board trustees, Allyson Damikolas, Lynn Davis, and Jonathan Stone, has gathered pace in Orange County—a traditionally conservative bastion that has recently swung blue, and which the Republicans hope to turn red once more through riling up suburban parents. None of the trustees has been accused of high crimes or misdemeanors; instead, they are accused—shock, horror—of promoting the teaching of CRT, ethnic studies, and sex education. In the recall literature, the proponents argue that the three should be fired by voters “for the teaching of CRT—a teaching practice that promotes racial based division aroung [sic] students.”

That’s a shoot-the-messenger argument if ever there was one, asserting that racial divisions are caused not by, well, racial divisions, but by those who talk about racial divisions. Despite the logical flaw, the recall is fully supported by the county’s Republican Party, whose denizens see it as a potential way to regain control over a county that used to be one of the most reliably red in the state.

DONATE NOW TO POWER THE NATION.

Readers like you make our independent journalism possible.

Similar efforts are underway in several other towns around California. In Corona-Norco, in Riverside County, for example, a school board member is facing recall after critics decried him for supporting the teaching of CRT. All told, 25 school board members in the state are facing recall elections this year, a rate five times that of 2020. Another 20-plus faced signature-gathering efforts for recalls that failed to qualify for the ballot. While many of these recalls were set in motion by parents’ anger over schools’ failing to reopen for more than year following the initial stay-at-home orders of March 2020, some have to do with teaching about racism.

The individual school board races in and of themselves aren’t terribly significant on a national stage. But what is significant is that the GOP is now fully intent on keeping education front-and-center on that stage, and that it is going to be using recall elections in the coming months, especially in liberal states such as California, to boost the public’s sense of fear and unease about what their children are being taught. It’s the latest in a long line of bait-and-switch tactics that the Grand Old Party has adopted, designed to create hysteria rather than to cool and calm political debate, and it’s one that has the potential to once again rewrite the political map of the United States.

Christians love Israel more than the Jews in this country.”

“It used to be Israel had absolute power over Congress,” Trump said. “And today I think it’s the exact opposite. And I think Obama and Biden did that. And yet in the election, they still get a lot of votes from Jewish people, which tells you that the Jewish people ― and I’ve said this for a long time ― the Jewish people in the United States either don’t like Israel or don’t care about Israel.”

Many evangelicals support Israel because they believe it is central to a Biblical prophecy foretelling the apocalypse, which they welcome in the belief it will reunite them with Christ.

However, Trump’s comments echo claims made in 2019, when, as president, he said Jews who vote for Democrats show “great disloyalty” to Israel. He earned criticism at the time from a Jewish advocacy group that said it was “a form of anti-Semitism” to suggest that Jewish Americans are not full Americans.

The idea that Jewish people supposedly control global politics and culture at the expense of non-Jews is a common, centuries-old anti-Semitic trope.

But Trump was not done.

“I mean, you look at The New York Times ― The New York Times hates Israel. Hates ’em. And they’re Jewish people that run The New York Times. I mean, the Sulzbergers,” Trump said. (Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr. was the longtime chairman of The New York Times Company; he was succeeded by his son, A.G. Sulzberger. They have Jewish ancestry but, according to the Times of Israel, some descendants were raised Protestant.)

“Unholy” host Jonathan Freedland said Trump’s comments were rife with “classic anti-Semitic tropes” and “a whole lot of negative stereotypes about Jews.”

“This is the guy who, after white supremacists went on the march in Charlottesville, said there were ‘very fine people on both sides,’”

Investigators on the Jan. 6 Committee believe that former Energy Secretary Rick Perry authored a Nov. 4 text to Mark Meadows suggesting that three state legislatures overrule their voters and cast electoral votes for Trump

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) presented the text on Tuesday night, which reads: “HERE’s an AGRESSIVE (sic) STRATEGY: Why can t (sic) the states of GA NC PENN and other R controlled state houses declare this is BS (where conflicts and election not called that night) and just send their own electors to vote and have it go to the SCOTUS.”

CNN reported that the phone number that the text was sent from matches Perry’s, according to both people who have Perry’s phone number and public records from his time as Energy Secretary.

A Perry spokesperson denied to the network that he was the author of the text, and was unable to explain why the number appeared to match that of the former Texas governor.

Perry sent the text on Nov. 4, one day after the election was held and as votes in key states were still being counted. As the slow motion coup was initiated by Trump.

But the plan resembles what Trump would partly spend the following two months doing: trying to pressure state legislatures into sending Trump, and not Biden, electors to Congress, regardless of their vote counts. Republicans in swing states, many of them heavily gerrymandered, have since moved to make it easier for future state legislatures to overrule the will of voters and send electors for the candidates that they, and not the voters, prefer. Aka white power

This appears to be the first time that the former Texas governor’s name has appeared in connection with the Big Lie and Capitol insurrection.

Though Perry played a starring role in former President Trump’s first impeachment, this seems to be his first appearance in the saga that culminated in the second impeachment, and remains the focus on the Jan. 6 committee’s work.

Liz Cheney's Jan. 6 committee: What kind of mendacious operation is this?

By Monica Showalter

Ever-determined to play the apocryphal role of Salieri to Donald Trump's Mozart, Liz Cheney is making a name for herself on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's Jan. 6 investigative committee.

One problem: The committee is proving itself amazingly dishonest in its ambitions to Get Trump. Now it's becoming a pattern.

Here's the latest out of that dishonest bunch from The Federalist:

Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney went after former President Donald Trump in her prime-time performance on Monday claiming that private messages of the president’s staff revealed an apathetic leader complicit in the riot at the Capitol as the attack unfolded.

“The violence was evident to all — it was covered in real time by almost every news channel,” said Cheney, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s hand-picked vice chair of the Select Committee on January 6. “But, for 187 minutes, President Trump refused to act when action by our president was required, indeed essential, and compelled by his oath to our Constitution.”

Trump’s 187-minute delay to action, she added, was a “supreme dereliction of duty.” An actual examination of the day’s events, however, shows no such delay.

According to a detailed timeline of the turmoil by The New York Times, the first building was not breached until about 2:13 p.m. The timeline was corroborated by The Washington Post, which stamped the first break-in at 2:15 p.m. Trump’s first tweet addressing the upheaval shortly followed at 2:38 p.m., when the president made a plea for peace, writing, “Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!”

And following that, Trump urged the crowd to be peaceful again, the Federalist notes.

That makes everything that Cheney claimed a lie. She literally made up a claim against that Trump didn't try to call the crowd off, when he actually did, and she called that the story as the press fawned. This is amazing dishonesty brought on by bitter jealousy and ambitions of replacing Trump, as Tucker Carlson has noted.

Melania Trump proves that she doesn’t have to wear heels to be stylish with her latest look.

The former first lady wore a chic and comfy outfit today while having an early Christmas visit with the U.S. Coast Guard. For the ensemble, Trump wore a white slightly oversized blazer that had statement-making buttons on the sides. Under it, she wore a black and white horizontal striped long-sleeve top. She paired these garments with tapered blue jeans. Trump accessorized with big, square-shaped sunglasses and a slinky gray scarf.

For once in my lifetime I hope that Moscow Mitch McConnell will succeed

In his column for the Daily Beast, conservative commentator Matt Lewis explained that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is successfully trolling Donald Trump and keeping him on edge with his comments about the House Jan 6th committee with the full knowledge that the former president can't touch him.

Linking events of the week together, Lewis suggested that Trump's broadsides at McConnell -- urging Senate Republicans to drop his as their leader -- are falling on deaf ears, while McConnell is making Trump's life more difficult.

Admitting that the former president is still the odds-on favorite for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, Lewis stated that Trump's influence over McConnell and members of the Senate is withering away.

Citing a Politico article that was headlined “GOP blows off Trump’s bid to oust McConnell,” Lewis wrote, "Trump is the obvious frontrunner to win the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, and he clearly lacks the authority to persuade or impose his will in other ways. He is powerful and talented, but also lazy and incompetent. Put otherwise, he is formidable but not unbeatable. Seeing his enemies prosper is a potent reminder of

According to the conservative columnist, McConnell appears to feel free to undermine Trump by giving his approval of the work being done investigating the Jan 6th Capitol riot that could ultimately cripple his political future.

Suggesting that "McConnell is ending his year on a high note," Lewis wrote, "In a political environment where such feats of longevity seem unthinkable, McConnell (who has been unanimously elected leader by his caucus every two years since 2006) is as good at the inside game of politics as Trump is at gaslighting Republican voters."

Writing "... while McConnell may not be looking to start a direct fight with Trump, he’s clearly not above trolling him," Lewis then ticked off the Kentucky Republican's comments on the Jan 6th riot committee that have, in turn, incurred Trump's wrath.

That said, Lewis suggested Trump will likely give up on his attacks on McConnell and go after other GOP targets where he might have more success.

As Lewis wrote, "...Trump is playing a numbers game. You miss all the shots you don’t take. Trump’s targets for defeat within the GOP also include Rep. Liz Cheney and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp. He won’t miss them all."

COVID Q&A
Do Vaccines, Boosters Work Against the Omicron Variant? Here's What Boston Doctors Say

We asked two top Boston doctors what they've learned about omicron in recent days during NBC10 Boston's weekly "COVID Q&A" series Tuesday

In the last week, medical experts have learned a lot about the highly contagious omicron COVID-19 variant. As more studies continue to be published, doctors are getting a better understanding of the new strain just as cases are beginning to spread across the U.S. and New England.

On Tuesday, Boston reported its first three omicron cases, and experts say it has already begun to spread across the state. The data is showing a huge surge in omicron cases in parts of Africa and European countries like Norway and Denmark.

"This is very worrisome," Dr. David Hamer of Boston Medical Center said this week.

What should residents be doing to protect themselves? Medical experts seem to agree that the best thing they can be doing right now is to get vaccinated if they are not already, and to get a booster if they are eligible.

But how effective are the vaccines and the boosters against the omicron vaccine? We asked two top Boston doctors what they've learned about omicron in recent days during NBC10 Boston's weekly "COVID Q&A" series Tuesday.

Does the vaccine protect against omicron? Does it affect the severity of illness?

So far, the Pfizer vaccine seems to offer less defense against infection from the variant, but still good protection from hospitalization, according to an analysis of data from South Africa, where the new variant is driving a surge in infections.

According to the data, a two-dose Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination appeared to provide just 33% protection against infection during South Africa's current omicron wave, but 70% protection against hospitalization, according to the analysis conducted by Discovery Health, South Africa’s largest private health insurer, and the South African Medical Research Council.

"Since last week, a number of studies have come out with quite a few different methodologies essentially showing the same thing, which is that even two doses of an mRNA vaccine are not going to be as effective," said Dr. Shira Doron of Tufts Medical Center. "It is more difficult for the antibodies generated to neutralize the omicron variant, but third doses or infection plus two doses brings the level of antibody effectiveness up to what you would expect with two doses with the prior variants. So boosters, by lab data, seem like they will really make a difference in terms of vaccine effectiveness. But we still need to see how things play out on the larger scale in the real world."

"A very early data release from South Africa shows Pfizer reduces hospital risks by 70% with patients with omicron, but it has much lower protective effect against symptomatic effects," Hamer said.

But like Doron, he cautioned that "it will be important to get some real world data giving us an idea of how well the vaccine is working."

The bottom line, Hamer said, is that we still don't know all that much about the effectiveness of the existing vaccines against omicron.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Does a booster help against omicron?
This also isn't yet known for sure, but early signs are that it should.

"Immediately post booster there may be a stronger protective effect," Hamer said. "So there is some hope, but it does sort of suggest that there may be a need to modify the vaccine so it better targets omicron. I think both Moderna and Pfizer are working on prototypes of that."

Does Pfizer or Moderna offer better protection against omicron?
All the data so far about vaccine efficacy against omicron has centered around Pfizer, so it's too soon to say for sure.

"I think we can assume it will be similar for Moderna," Doron said. "But there's so many variables here it would be hard to guess. Generally, the results should be similar when Moderna and Pfizer are studied."

Should I wait until there is an omicron-specific vaccine to get a booster?
Both Hamer and Doron said if you can get a booster now, you should.

"I think we can expect it to offer added protection," Doron said. "When people say, 'Should I wait for a potential omicron-specific booster to come out or should I get a booster now?' the answer is you should get a booster now."

If the existing boosters prove effective against omicron, as experts anticipate, she said it's likely that the vaccine manufacturers won't even release an omicron-specific booster.

To help you get ready for Christmas.

From the pulpit

Turning to the Christmas story for relief from politics

SICK and tired of the constantly disturbing news, we turn to the Christmas story for relief. Surely in the beautiful Christmas narrative we can find respite from all the hateful language, all the negative, divisive infighting that is so rampant in American politics today. Surely we can there find relief from the incessant demand that we must side either with the Republicans or with the Democrats.

And so we turn to this Sunday’s gospel scriptures, and there we discover a text in which the author of Luke relates what the mother of Jesus must have predicted about his arrival:

“God has shown great strength with his arm,” Mary says. “He has dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart. He has brought down the mighty from their thrones, but lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away.”

Oh no! we tell ourselves, for Mary’s words challenge us to choose whose side we are on, requiring us to side with those politicians who are most committed to “bringing down” the powerful from their “thrones.” Her words challenge us to side with those who are most committed to dislodging the selfish wealthy from their positions of greedy dominance, thereby “sending the rich away empty” and “lifting up the lowly” and “filling the hungry with good things.”

In that way, political realities come barging right into the Christmas story, right into the narrative of the low-born baby who as an adult criticized the rich for their selfish greed, warning them that “you cannot serve two masters, for you cannot serve both God and money,” and admonishing all of us to care for the poor, the ostracized, the outcasts, including even the least and last of people, no matter who or what or where they are.

Contradicting the distortions of far too many politicians, Jesus warns us to “guard yourselves against every form of greed, for your life does not consist in the abundance of your possessions. For I myself,” he reminds us, “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give my life for all.”

And this, actually, is good news. For if taken seriously, Jesus frees us from the delusion that greed can make us happy, and invites us to stand instead with and among the humble in heart who know true blessedness.

Generals Warn Of Divided Military And Possible Civil War In Next U.S. Coup Attempt

"Some might follow orders from the rightful commander in chief, while others might follow the Trumpian loser," which could trigger civil war, the generals wrote.

By

Mary Papenfuss

12/18/2021 09:28am EST

Three retired U.S. generals warned in a chilling column Friday that another coup attempt in America in 2024 could divide the military and plunge an unprepared nation into civil war.

“With the country still as divided as ever, we must take steps to prepare for the worst,” wrote former Army Major Gen. Paul Eaton, former Brigadier Gen. Steven Anderson and former Army Major Gen. Antonio Taguba.

As the nation nears the first anniversary of the Capitol riot, the generals are “increasingly concerned about the aftermath of the 2024 presidential election and the potential for lethal chaos inside our military, which would put all Americans at severe risk,” they wrote in The Washington Post.

“In short: We are chilled to our bones at the thought of a coup succeeding next time,” they added.

The next time could be far more cataclysmic if members of the military throw in with those who want to overthrow the government, the generals warned.

“Without constant maintenance, the potential for a military breakdown mirroring societal or political breakdown is very real,” the trio noted.

A “disturbing number” of veterans and even active-duty military members took part in the attack on the Capitol. The “potential for a total breakdown of the chain of command along partisan lines ... is significant should another insurrection occur,” they added.

In a “contested election, with loyalties split,” some might “follow orders from the rightful commander in chief,” while other “rogue units” might “follow the Trumpian loser ... it is not outlandish to say a military breakdown could lead to civil war,” the generals warned.
