We now have several states over 800 cases per 100,000

These numbers are from the CDC

State/Territory7-Day Case Rate per 100,000
New York City*1,717.2
New York (Level/Comm)*1,219.9
District of Columbia1,182.6
Puerto Rico1,128.3
New Jersey1,105.6

And here I thought DC with the most liberal population on the planet would be at near zero considering how awesome they must be with all of their Covid protocols!

The Left (Unwittingly?) Spoofs Itself in Don’t Look Up

By Jack Cashill

The rumor that the Netflix film, Don’t Look Up, is an allegory about climate change is true. Writer/director Adam McKay, a self-declared democratic socialist and Bernie fan, has admitted as much. In fact, McKay calls climate change “the biggest story in 66 million years. It’s the biggest story in the history of upright apes.” That much acknowledged, my skeptical friends on the right have found the film much more amusing than those on the left. My only question is whether McKay is Bernie Bro’ enough to have intended that outcome.

Spoiler alert: Don’t Look Up tells the story of a planet-killing comet hurtling towards earth. After watching the first ten minutes of it, I thought it a comedy, a pretty amusing one at that. At Christmas dinner, my Democratic friends assured me it wasn’t a comedy and warned me not to finish it before going to bed. I did anyhow and smiled all the way through to its laugh-out-loud epilogue. Yes, the movie is a comedy. It is scary, I suppose, to those like New York Times reviewer Monohla Dargis who believe that the future of the planet is “too terrifying” to contemplate and its inhabitants “too numb, dumb, [and] powerless” to amuse. “If you weep,” writes Darghis, “it may not be from laughing.”

The Right laughs because they know something the Left does not. In that the movie is about information flow, the Right knows who controls it. In an unusually honest article from February 2021, Time magazine boasted of the “well-funded cabal of powerful people, ranging across industries and ideologies, working together behind the scenes to influence perceptions, change rules and laws, steer media coverage and control the flow of information.” This cabal, according to Time, “were not rigging the [2020] election; they were fortifying it.” Sure, whatever.

Every institution skewered in Don’t Look Up belongs to that cabal. This includes the administration of soulless RINO president Janie Orlean (Meryl Streep) whose party identity is revealed -- in a deft touch -- only by the portrait of Richard Nixon hanging on her office wall. The fact that comic actor Jonah Hill plays her oily son and chief of staff should have tipped off the easily scared that this film was, indeed, a comedy.

Ms. Cottle is a member of the editorial board.
Well, that was weird.

Much of the past 12 months felt as though 2021 came about by looking at the political insanity of 2020 and thinking smugly: Hold my beer.

The storming of the Capitol? A second Trump impeachment? Senator Ted Cruz going hard at Big Bird? Infrastructure Week actually happening? Many of the year’s political developments defied belief, much less explanation.

As usual, a smattering of people and events managed to rise above, or sink below, the baseline chaos. These notables deserve to be commemorated — and, in some cases, subpoenaed — for their roles in making 2021 so very memorable. As he was last year, Donald Trump was deemed ineligible to compete, as he continues to operate in a political reality all his own.

Biggest Pain in the Butt
Senator Joe Manchin
It’s not simply that the West Virginia Democrat spent the year obstructing his party’s legislative goals. Or that he wasted weeks claiming to be scrounging for Republican buy-in on voting rights legislation. Or that he apparently regards his constituents as a bunch of slacker welfare cheats. It’s that he insisted on being such a pious, pompous, pointlessly destructive prat about the whole thing. Mr. Manchin should take his houseboat, his coal-company money and his folksy pretensions and blow them out the tailpipe of that Maserati he was seen tooling around in.

Most Perplexing
Senator Kyrsten Sinema
We get it: The Arizona Democrat does not want to be seen as a line-toeing party drone. But what she does want remains a mystery to most Americans. Her maverick-without-a-cause shtick ticked off many Democrats, including voters back home, and spawned a “Saturday Night Live” parody of Ms. Sinema as a contrarian agent of chaos.

Worst Vacation Planner
Senator Ted Cruz
When a storm left millions of Texans shivering in the cold and dark in February, the Republican lawmaker and his family promptly fled to a luxury resort in Cancun. The social media backlash was swift and brutal, shaming Mr. Cruz into a quick return home.

Biggest Loser
Andrew Cuomo
And just like that, the former New York governor’s brand went from pandemic rock star to alleged serial harasser. Mouthy and handsy turns out to be a bad combo.

hat “time and again, the biggest obstacle to a red wave hasn’t been the Democratic Party. It’s been the Republican Party.”
EZRA KLEIN speaks to David Shor, who discusses his fear that Democrats face electoral catastrophe unless they shift their messaging.
Senator Bernie Sanders
The Vermont curmudgeon’s puffy-coat-and-mittens ensemble set a new standard for inauguration chic.

Saddest Holiday Poser
Representative Thomas Massie
Nothing screams “season of peace” — and “crisis of masculinity” — quite like a goofy, middle-aged Kentucky Republican arming himself and his family for the annual Christmas card picture

Biggest Glow-Up
Representative Liz Cheney
The Wyoming Republican once was best known as the warmongering, torture-loving, anti-gay-rights older daughter of the most sinister vice president of modern times. Now, she’s going all-in as her party’s fiercest champion of American democracy.

Most Entertaining Political Feud
Liz Cheney and Ted Cruz
He accused her of having Trump Derangement Syndrome. She suggested he wasn’t “a real man.” He snarked that she’d make a good Democrat. She slammed him for pandering to secessionist wing nuts. This duo has the makings of a red-hot podcast.

ntempt of Congress, referring the matter to the Justice Department for possible prosecution.

Most Delicate Tightrope Walker
Gov. Ron DeSantis
Pretty much everyone assumes that the Florida Republican wants to be a White House contender in 2024, but he needs to avoid looking so eager — or popular — that he piques the envy and ire of a certain former president.

Coolest Dad
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg
The baby pics of the twins are cute and all, but Secretary Pete really deserves props for taking parental leave and unapologetically defending the practice against attacks from sneering conservatives.

Most Thankless Job
Senator Chuck Schumer
The Senate Democratic leader wakes up every morning knowing that he has few tools with which to manage a restive progressive base, an unpopular president, zero margin for Democratic defections, an obstructionist Republican minority — and Joe Manchin.

Most Spineless
Representative Kevin McCarthy
Desperate to become House speaker if his party wins control of the House next year, the Republican leader has been frantically sucking up to MAGA world. Not only has he slunk down to Mar-a-Lago to kiss Mr. Trump’s ring, he also has taken to basically shrugging off his more unhinged colleagues’ most vile trolling. Paul Gosar posting an anime of himself killing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and attacking President Biden? No harm intended. Lauren Boebert’s anti-Muslim rantings? Why all the fuss? Such inspiring leadership.

Greatest American Hero
Police Officer Eugene Goodman
As MAGA zealots rampaged through the Capitol on Jan. 6, Officer Goodman of the Capitol Police lured invaders away from the Senate chamber, where lawmakers were huddled. This man more than earned his Congressional Gold Medal.

Most Desperate for Attention
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene
Can someone at Fox News offer the Georgia Republican her own show already? It’s not as if she has a lick of interest in legislating.

Biggest Lie
There was no mass election fraud. Donald Trump lost. Deal with it.

Happy New Year, all. Here’s to a more boring 2022.

“The panel will continue to collect information and seek testimony from willing witnesses and those who have been reluctant — a group that now includes Republican members of Congress. It is examining whether to recommend that the Justice Department pursue charges against anyone, including former president Donald Trump, and whether legislative proposals are needed to help prevent valid election results from being overturned in the future.”

Vox:
“In just four years as president, Trump remade the federal judiciary — all with a big assist from a Senate Republican leader willing to break any norm in order to ensure GOP control of the courts. Trump appointed a third of the Supreme Court and nearly a third of all active appeals court judges.

“Nearly one year into Biden’s time in office, the result hasn’t exactly been a bloodbath for his policies — in contrast to the seemingly never-ending array of lawsuits seeking to repeal Obamacare, no federal judge has yet tried to repeal Biden’s major legislative accomplishments such as the American Rescue Plan or the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

“But in two areas in particular, immigration and public health, the courts have been unusually aggressive.”

Trump Locked In Full Battle with House Select Committee
December 27, 2021 at 1:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 83 Comments

CNN:
“Trump’s campaign of obstruction, which has now reached the Supreme Court, raises questions about whether the panel, already facing a racing clock ahead of next year’s midterms, will fulfill its goal of a historic accounting of his efforts to overturn the election. Trump’s inner circle is locked into a strategy of preventing a comprehensive reckoning over one of the most notorious days ever in the United States and seeking to whitewash history as he readies an apparent new run for the White House.

“The panel’s attempt to reach deep into Trump world and behind the scenes in the West Wing on January 6 kicked into higher gear in the days before Christmas, offering new insight into its areas of focus. Trump responded by stepping up his own strategy of defying the truth.

“It is now clear committee members are trying to build a detailed picture of exactly what Trump said, did and thought in the days leading up to the insurrection and in the hours when it raged on Capitol Hill after he incited the mob with fresh election fraud lies.”

VDH -

What’s the moral of Biden’s current troubles? From the Bible and the Greeks and throughout the Western tradition, there is a constant refrain of being wary of hubris, the lying and arrogance that are innate to it, and the divine power that ultimately levels things out.

Biden and the Left so despised Donald Trump that they lost all sense of moderation, of proportion, of logic itself. Thus, they find themselves in the current ridiculous situation of suffering the consequences of their own unhinged rhetoric and actions.

This madness was birthed in part because Trump’s newly calibrated populist Republican Party had the potential to permanently draw the working class away from Democrats. In part, they found Trump’s salesmanship and braggadocio repulsive and contrary to bicoastal manners. Partly his agenda had more success since any first term since Ronald Reagan. Add it up, and the result was toxic hatred and mindless rejection of the successful policies.

Biden’s undoing was claiming not just to be antithetical to Trump, but the antithesis of all that Trump did. His hatred blinded him to the reality that Trump’s record on Afghanistan, the border, COVID-19, the economy, foreign policy, energy, and regulation was in each instance either adequate or very good. To simply nullify all of it, and to claim Trump was an ungodly disaster, meant Biden’s own one-dimensional rejectionist policies had to be winning and successful. And when they were neither, he suffered not just the wages of failure, but of hypocrisy and nemesis as well.

The WSJ reports climate changes are the major inflationary forces of 2021 has been the weather.

Wild weather around the world wreaked havoc on markets for raw materials, lifting prices for everything from electricity and heat to houses and breakfast cereal.

Policy makers and investors have debated the effects of fiscal and monetary policy on inflation, but a big reason for rising prices this year have been factors that neither lawmakers nor central banks can do much about. Prices for natural gas, lumber, corn, soybeans, wheat and other building blocks of modern commerce surged to multiyear highs—in some cases records—because of fire, freezes, flood, drought, hurricanes and some of the hottest weather ever.

Weather is always at play in commodities markets. A freeze in Florida pushes up orange-juice futures. A blizzard in Chicago boosts natural gas prices. A bumper crop floods the market. But this year the weather was steadily extreme and often in ways that sent commodity prices higher.

Low production of fuel and grain due to a yearslong energy slump and the trade war with China set the stage for rising commodity prices. The pandemic disrupted output further. From there, the weather took over. “Weather is probably the biggest factor of higher prices,” said Craig Turner, senior commodities broker with StoneX Financial Inc.

It all started in February when Texas froze over. Winter Storm Uri drove up demand for natural gas for heat while clogging wells with ice, which drastically reduced production in the region that needed fuel to stay warm.

Winter Storm Uri froze Texas and sent demand for heat soaring while icing over energy infrastructure.

Spot prices spiked around the country. At the main U.S. gas-trading hub, a pipeline junction in Louisiana known as the Henry Hub, the price hit a record of $23.68 per million British thermal units. The cold also crimped the Gulf Coast’s chemical plants, which are unaccustomed to freezing temperatures, setting the stage for shortages and higher prices for basic materials like PVC pipe and paint resins.

In South America, the worst drought in decades scorched growing regions, wilting Brazil’s export corn crop and leaving the ParanĂ¡ River too shallow for fully loaded boats to pass from Argentina’s interior to Atlantic shipping lanes. By mid-May, corn and soybean futures had risen to their highest prices in several years.

Drought struck North America, drying up hydropower in the West. One big hydropower station in northern California had to be shut down completely when Lake Oroville dropped beneath the water level needed to generate electricity. Natural gas and coal were burned to cover the shortfall, driving up prices.

The Edward Hyatt power plant in California had to shut down this summer after Lake Oroville’s water level fell.

The hottest North American June on record kept air conditioners humming and fuel prices climbing. Triple-digit temperatures buckled roads and killed people in Portland, Ore., and Seattle. The glut of natural gas that had kept American utility bills low for years evaporated as demand for electricity rose.

The heat stretched into July and around the world commodities producers grappled with destructive weather and disaster.

Wildfires broke out in bone-dry forests of the Pacific Northwest. In British Columbia, sawmills were choked off from forests and customers, lifting lumber prices that had just retreated from a historic climb that threatened the housing boom. (Wood prices would soar again in November when floods in British Columbia cut off sawmills).

Lumber prices kputz

You do realize that we are in the middle of a snowstorm, something (snow) that Seattle never saw until a few years ago. We are seeing record low temperatures. It's sort of odd and frustrating. 17 degrees is being called frigid and someone almost had a cow when the "wind chill" was a negative 1.

This is typical Minnesota winter weather and half of the city is closed due to the weather. The guy who came out to drop off groceries at Target was wearing a t-shirt. He said he couldn't imagine that they would make anyone go outside, so he just wore his normal short sleeve Target T. If nobody went out in the snow, the upper midwest and New England area would be closed for months.

Rio Grande Village in Texas hit 94 degrees on Christmas Day, making it the

By Leigh Morgan
Christmas 2021 was the hottest Christmas on record in the United States, according to the National Weather Service.

A weather service observation station in Rio Grande Village in Texas recorded a high temperature of 94 degrees on Saturday, Christmas Day.

According to the National Weather Service office in Midland, Texas, that was the warmest temperature on Dec. 25 in both Texas and the entire United States.

The previous record was 92 degrees, set again in Texas. This time it was McAllen and the year was 1964 (and it was tied in 2015).

Alabama had way-above-average temperatures as well on Dec. 25, but no records were broken.

That wasn’t the case on Sunday, when two cities had record highs for Dec. 26 and two other cities tied their record highs for the date:

Monday high temperature forecast
Record highs in several Alabama cities on Sunday
Much-above-average temperatures expected through the week.

It wasn’t a balmy Christmas everywhere: The coldest temperature recorded in the lower 48 states on Saturday was -18 degrees near Estcourt Station in Maine, according to NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center.

Despite relentless efforts by Donald Trump and Republicans to undermine and repeal the bill, Obamacare has proved durable and popular. This year, more Americans enrolled in its programs than ever before.

In his first year in office, Mr. Biden passed the Rescue Act, which jump-started the vital distribution of vaccines and helped families, businesses and the nation navigate the virus. He defied the skeptics and passed a bipartisan plan to rebuild the country’s fraying infrastructure, with enormous implications for America’s economic future. That alone is pretty good work.

If he can retool the Build Back Better Act to make it permanent, as the A.C.A. is, rather than piecing together a hodgepodge of temporary programs, it, too, may be able to stand the test of time, and a decade from now, be even more popular than it is today.

Given the makeup of the Congress and the frayed bonds of trust among his fractious caucuses, there is no assurance that Mr. Biden can revive the Build Back Better Act as Mr. Obama did the A.C.A. Nor would its revival necessarily help Democrats avoid a midterm wipeout next fall, given the continuing concerns over inflation and the fact that incumbent parties almost always suffer losses two years after winning the White House.

The A.C.A. was no shield for Mr. Obama and Democrats in 2010. But if, through a retooled Build Back Better Act, Mr. Biden can achieve significant and durable progress on some major priorities that will benefit children and families for generations, Democrats would be wise to celebrate and tout those gains instead of complaining about what wasn’t possible.

It's the economy, Obamacare and again the climate changes that are addressed by the BBB bill.

And it's the economy stupid.

Heating up your home can cost a lot more than when the weather conditions are not going down!

Usually natural gas or electricity warms up the houses and both prices are rising because of climate changes!!
