Russian forces stalled or advancing or a little bit of both depending on your source...

Thinks are either going according to plan or Putin is furious
The US continues to see Russian forces face “stiff resistance” and see their momentum slow in the northern part of Ukraine, while Russians are having a “little bit more success” in the south, a senior US defense official told reporters on Sunday, citing fuel shortages and logistical issues.
The US is seeing the most resistance in the Russian advance on the city of Kharkiv, the official said. The Russians are “facing some logistics challenges as well on their advance down north to Kyiv,” the official added. The official noted that the Russians would learn from their logistical issues and find ways to overcome them.

This latest CNN story is from about 10 minutes ago and might be giving a fair assessment. Yesterday I watched a high ranking US military commander suggest that Russian troop advance initially bypassed the major population centers, looking to surround them first rather than march right in. The fighting we heard about was from smaller reconnaissance missions meant to gather and provide information. This official suggested about half of the 150,000 troops amassed at the border had entered Ukraine, while the rest appeared to be almost waiting in reserve.

From what we can determine since then, Russian troops have bombed things like power grids and such and have most definitely started a slow advance into these cities.  The underlying plan (based on what this military commander suggested) was a more methodical method of almost laying siege to these cities, taking out power and blocking supply chains. Whether this was the original plan or not is a topic of argument, but it appears to be what is happening now.

The expectations probably might have been that Zelenskyy would have abandoned Kyiv once Russian troops advanced across the border. In fact, our own Administration offered Zelenskyy to assist with any sort of evacuation of th city, but the Ukrainian President refused. Once it was clear that the Russian army would face resistance in these cities, the plan to simply march right in may have given way to the idea of surround and lay siege.

Negotiations have been on the table, but both sides seem to be reluctant to give in to the demands of the other side. What might be an acceptable peace agreement at this time is unknown. In fact, I cannot see a manner in which both sides are placated in any agreement.

This week’s White House Report Card finds President Joe Biden treading water. He had little impact in the Russia-Ukraine crisis, no impact on the surge in inflation and gas prices, and was dismissed as a failure in approval rating polls.

He did succeed in fulfilling his promise to liberals to nominate a black woman for the Supreme Court, the admired federal appeals Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. But his polling remained low, his agenda remained stalled, and the battle against the coronavirus was a confusing mess. He hopes to give it life at next week's State of the Union address.

Conservative foreign policy analyst and grader Jed Babbin wished he could grade lower than an “F,” and Democratic pollster John Zogby graded a “C” and raised several concerns about Biden, including his ability to push his court pick through the evenly divided Senate.

Victoria Bassetti: Do you think Ukraine is the end of his kind of, let's call it, descent into madness?

Belton: I guess we've got to hope so. And the signs are hopeful. I mean the stronger resistance that Ukraine can put up, the stronger the resistance from the West, will hopefully mean that this is the end, that it is his Waterloo, and it will lead to his toppling. We have to see how long can President Zelensky withstand the Russian forces. We have to see whether the U.S. and the rest of the Western allies will now escalate their response. Because at the moment, I think we're only seeing the beginning of the impact of the sanctions that were launched earlier this week. So the sanctions against [Moscow-run financial services company] Sberbank, against [Russian state bank] VTB, barring them from conducting any dollar transactions, they're pretty tough. We’re already seeing signs of a run on the banks. But Russia's Central Bank has clearly made some quite strong interventions in the market to prop up the ruble and to keep things stable for now. But for quite how long it can continue to do so is another question.

I think if the U.S., as is being suggested, goes ahead and sanctions Russia's Central Bank, that's going to wipe out a huge chunk of Russia's hard currency reserves, and is potentially devastating. And you would have to hope that that would be a very, very strong deterrent against Putin ever considering going any further than what he has. But I've just been speaking to one Moscow businessman who's pretty well connected and he says that's not possible. [Putin] can't back out now. He's crossed the Rubicon. He would completely lose face.

-------------

Scott like I said before, this will be his Afghanistan crisis.

And he will have to withdraw, but kill thousands of people like the Taliban militants in Afghanistan.

Another real Republicans is not a fool like rrb in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Sen. Mitt Romney (Utah) on Sunday castigated fellow Republican lawmakers who recently spoke at a white nationalist conference in Florida, calling the event “evil” and likening those attending to “morons.”

“There’s no place in either political party for this white nationalist or racism. It’s simply wrong. It’s, as you’ve indicated, speaking of evil, it’s evil as well,” Romney told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union.”

He went on to call out Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) for speaking at the third annual America First Political Action Conference, which was organized by white nationalist figurehead Nick Fuentes in Orlando, Florida.

Arizona state Sen. Wendy Rogers and Idaho Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin, both Republicans, also spoke at the event in a pre-recorded address

“I don’t know them,” he said of Greene and Gosar, “but I’m reminded of that old line from the ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’ movie where one character says, ‘Morons, I’ve got morons on my team.’ And I have to think anybody that would sit down with white nationalists and speak at their conference was certainly missing a few IQ points.”

Amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Romney was also quick and vocal with his denouncement of fellow Republicans who have sided with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying he believes any such support is “almost treasonous.” He also said he hopes many of them are “changing their stripes” in the wake of the ongoing violence.

“How anybody in this country, which loves freedom, can side with Vladimir Putin, which is an oppressor, a dictator, he kills people. He imprisons his political opponents. He has been an adversary of America at every chance he’s had. It’s unthinkable to me,” he said. “It’s almost treasonous and it just makes me ill to see some of these people do that but, of course, they do it because they think it’s shock value and it’s going to get them more eyeballs and maybe make a little more money for them or their network. It’s disgusting and I’m hopeful that you’re seeing some of those people recognize just how wrong they were.”

Romney held back in directly condemning former President Donald Trump when questioned by Bash about whether he believes Trump’s past praise of Putin is treasonous. He did say: “Standing up for freedom is the right thing to do in America and anything less than that, in my opinion, is unworthy of American support.”

Roger, you can go to RedState, PJ Media, HotAir, Powerline, or any conservative blog or news site and every one of them is pro-Ukraine. Not sure where anyone ever got the idea that Conservatives anywhere are "pro-Putin" simply because the are willing to acknowledge that our own President likely could have (but refused to) actually stop this.

This is about quite a few things and you cannot just bundle them into something simple.

1) Our President has bungled this from word one
2) Other leaders are stepping up while we are still laying back
3) Zelenskyy was offered assistance to abandon ship by Biden and the US and he chose to stay and fight. That is leadership.
4) Putin is not well liked by anyone and there is a lot of grassroots opposition that exists or has formed.

What I will not do regarding a war that is less than a week old is make any sweeping declarations at this point. While the prevailing rhetoric is that Putin is stalled, stuck, furious, panicked, or whatever... most of that is coming from Ukrainian reports.

I think we should remember that it took 7 weeks for Desert Storm and the largest military force ever assembled to take full control of Bagdad.

Perhaps these reports are correct and Putin is going to fall short. We can certainly hope. But there are still plenty of other military experts who are saying that resistance from Ukraine is all fine and good, but that eventually they probably still fall to superior forces. We can talk supply chain issues and such all you want, but these major cities still appear surrounded and power grids and such have been bombed. These are still citizens without power, carrying AK47s around, and will still likely end up having to continue to fight heavy infantry.

But if you truly want my own speculation. I would offer that Putin is the sort of bastard who probably sent his least trained and least equipped soldiers in first and is holding back his better forces after the Ukrainians are worn down and down on supplies. He is the sort of guy who would have no problems basically sacrificing Russian boys for the sake of military strategy. I am not as certain as some that Putin only accounted for 6-7 days of fighting. That "feels" like wishful thinking to me.

They want the Russians to win so they can win the election

Sorry Roger...

If you looked at the most recent Biden approvals that have just come out, there is no need for Putin to win any war for Conservatives to win an election.

Quite frankly, I am not sure why anyone thinks that who wins a war between Russia and Ukraine is going to have much of an effect on the election. It's ultimately not the US in war and there isn't anyone in the country that is really hoping for Putin to succeed.

I suppose if Putin does succeed and if Ukraine falls, Biden might get that blame. But at this point we have destruction, hundreds if not thousands dead, we have hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing Ukraine. Biden (will in the eyes of many) be blamed for that to the degree that you can blame an American President for a war between two countries have a world away.

The fact that they are at war will be laid on Biden.

The ultimate outcome will not have much bearing on that. If Ukraine eventually pushes off Russia, I am pretty sure that nobody with an IQ over room temperature is going to give Biden credit or absolve Biden for his actions that lead to an invasion that will be devastating no matter how it turns out.

I get the feeling that you are more concerned with Bidens' approvals than the fate of the Ukrainian people. I don't think you care one bit about those people who are probably not wanting to fight each other, but are being force to do so. To you it's all about politics.

Oh... and like always, it will be about Trump.

If the President was Trump and even if his supporters said this, he would have called them RINOS. This is legitimate criticism of Sleepy Joe Biden. In reverse you would be calling the Democrats in disguise.

The sanctions Biden announced at a press conference on Thursday won't do any more to change Putin's behavior than the sanctions we and the rest of the West imposed after he seized Crimea and moved his troops into Eastern Ukraine in 2014. The sanctions cover more banks and more oligarchs but were, in a word, disappointing. Biden said his new sanctions will "limit Russia's ability to do business in dollars, euros, pounds and yen to be part of the global economy." That's all well and good, but why just "limit" the banks? Why not totally and completely ban them from operation in the world's banking system? It was announced on Friday that the EU has agreed to freeze the assets of Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and the U.S. Treasury followed close on their heels by doing the same thing.

But Biden and NATO and the rest of the civilized shouldn't stop there.

Here's the one thing Slow Joe WON'T do -

They can only actually freeze international assets. They have no authority to seize assets that exist within Russia or within Russian banks.

You have to wonder how much of Putin's personal assets are actually tied up in international banking systems, or if knowing that this sort of sanction was a strong possibility that he hasn't already taken stuff out of those place.

We need real action here. The problem is that now here we are, too late to have done many of the things that could have prevented this (or made it even tougher on the Russians) had they started sanctions and more importantly started arming Ukraine weeks ago.

EU to spend $500 million on arms, fighter jets for Ukraine

By AGENCIES

European Union member states have agreed to unblock 450 million euros ($500 million) for member states to buy arms for Ukraine, the bloc’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell says.

The arms package will include fighter jets for the beleaguered Ukrainian military, he says.

“Another taboo has fallen. The taboo that the European Union was not providing arms in a war,” said Borrell.

The EU’s plan to fund weapons purchases will also help buy air defense systems, anti-tank weapons, ammunition, and other military equipment for Ukraine’s armed forces. It would also supply things like fuel, protective gear, helmets, and first aid kits.
