A Majority believes Biden is failing to do enough in Ukraine...

AP-NORC poll: More support for Ukraine, concern about Russia
A majority of Americans — 56% — think Biden hasn't been tough enough on Russia, according to the poll. Another 36% said his approach has been “about right.”
Speaking after the release of the earlier AP-NORC poll, White House press secretary Jen Psaki noted that Americans may have different meanings of what is a “major role” or “minor role” in the conflict. “We make national security decisions based on what’s best for our country’s national security, not on the latest polling,” Psaki said.

So yes... the American public is not really sour on Joe Biden's response, the American public is just too confused to understand what they are thinking here. Better leave our own thinking up to Biden and his media side-kick Jen Psaki.  They apparently understand us better than we do.

There has been about a dozen polls on this very subject and all but one has shown that at least a plurality (and most of the time a clear majority) want us to be doing more to help the Ukrainians. Overall there has been no "bump" in Biden's approvals which is very unusual for any "war time President". Even if we are not personally at war, these sorts of conflicts generally pull Americans together (and I think it has to some degree). They also tend to raise the level of approval for our leadership. This has not happened here.

Robust COVID Relief Achieved Historic Gains Against Poverty and Hardship, Bolstered
February 24, 2022

When COVID-19 began to rapidly spread across the United States in March 2020, the economy quickly shed more than 20 million jobs. Amid intense fear and hardship, federal policymakers responded, enacting five relief bills in 2020 that provided an estimated $3.3 trillion of relief and the American Rescue Plan in 2021, which added another $1.8 trillion. This robust policy response helped make the COVID-19 recession the shortest on record and helped fuel an economic recovery that has brought the unemployment rate, which peaked at 14.8 percent in April 2020, down to 4.0 percent. One measure of annual poverty declined by the most on record in 2020, in data back to 1967, and the number of uninsured people remained stable, rather than rising as typically happens with large-scale job loss. Various data indicate that in 2021, relief measures reduced poverty, helped people access health coverage, and reduced hardships like inability to afford food or meet other basic needs.

These positive results contrast with the Great Recession of 2007-2009, when the federal response was large compared to measures taken in other post-World War II recessions but less than one-third as large as the fiscal policy measures adopted in 2020-2021, when measured as a share of the economy. While decried by some at the time as too large, the relief measures enacted during the Great Recession were undersized and ended too soon. As a result, the economy remained weak for longer than was necessary — and families suffered avoidable hardship. Two years after the Great Recession began, unemployment was still 9.9 percent and food insecurity remained one-third above its pre-recession level. While some of that difference stems from differences in the trigger to the downturn, some is clearly due to the strength of the policy response.

The federal response to the pandemic was not only large but also broad in its reach and innovative in its policy approaches. In addition to funding the public health response to the pandemic, such as personal protective equipment, testing, and vaccines, the federal government took a number of steps for the first time:

Providing cash payments to individuals regardless of whether they filed taxes or had a minimum level of income and delivering the payments automatically to tens of millions of recipients of federal benefits as well as those who had filed taxes.
Expanding unemployment coverage to a broader group of workers, including part-time and self-employed workers, workers in the gig economy, and workers with less tenure, while also increasing the value substantially more than in the Great Recession and, as in past downturns, increasing the duration of coverage.
Making the full Child Tax Credit available to the lowest-income children and, building on prior expansions, substantially increasing the credit amount.
Providing uninterrupted health insurance coverage for Medicaid enrollees across all states and lowering or eliminating premiums for Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace enrollees.

Enacting a national paid leave policy, albeit one with substantial gaps.
Creating a new emergency school meal replacement program using electronic benefit cards and, building on steps taken during the Great Recession, increasing the value of SNAP and WIC benefits.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Establishing a federal eviction prevention program and increasing rental assistance while also, as in the Great Recession, expanding funding for homelessness assistance.

Providing resources to help shore up child care providers in light of concerns that many were going out of business, while also expanding access to child care assistance to stretched families, building on the child care assistance expansion during the Great Recession.

Providing fiscal aid to cities, counties, and tribal governments, whose budgets have been severely challenged by the pandemic.
The federal response also included:

Providing more substantial fiscal aid to states than in the Great Recession.
Providing funds for states to provide emergency assistance to help families with children with very low incomes.

The large, broad, and innovative relief effort has directly strengthened the recovery and reduced hardship, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and other independent analysts agree. International comparisons show that nations with larger fiscal responses to the pandemic, such as the U.S., have experienced stronger growth.[1] In substantial part due to federal action:

The recession lasted only two quarters, the shortest recession on record.
The unemployment rate fell rapidly to 6.7 percent at the end of 2020 and to 4.0 percent today, only modestly above the low pre-pandemic level of 3.5 percent and much lower than at this point in the recoveries from the last three recessions.
The number of people with annual income below the poverty line, accounting for government assistance, fell by 8 million in 2020, the largest amount on record in data going back to 1967. Monthly estimates showed poverty continued to decline from 2020 to 2021

The majority want a stronger response.

WASHINGTON -- As Russia escalates its war in Ukraine and stories of civilian casualties and destruction in cities reach the United States, support has risen for a major American role — and so has fear of the threat Russia poses to the U.S.

The new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research also finds a majority of Americans say they're willing to accept damage to the economy if it helps to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion. Forty percent now say the U.S. should have a “major role,” up from 26% in an AP-NORC poll conducted just before the invasion began.

Another 46% say the U.S. should have a “minor role.” The percentage who think the U.S. shouldn’t be involved at all ticked down from 20% to 13%.

The poll suggests many Americans want President Joe Biden to do more to counter Russia without suggesting he should reverse his pledge not to send U.S. troops to Ukraine.

Additional U.S. forces have deployed to neighboring countries that are part of NATO. The U.S. and West, meanwhile, have imposed sanctions that have crushed Russia’s economy. They are providing anti-tank and anti-missile weapons to Ukraine, which has mounted a robust resistance, killed thousands of Russian troops, and stopped Russia from taking Kyiv or other major cities so far. But the White House has also held back some weapons and intelligence as it seeks to avoid a direct conflict between the U.S. and Russia, which have the world's two largest nuclear arsenals.

A majority of Americans — 56% — think Biden hasn't been tough enough on Russia, according to the poll. Another 36% said his approach has been “about right.” you agreed!!!

He might have rescued the Democrats.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who in December essentially killed a massive climate and social spending package by saying he would not vote for it, has reopened conversations with his colleagues on the legislation, The Washington Post reported Thursday, citing two people familiar.

Manchin has told his fellow Democrats that a vote on the package must be taken before senators break for a recess in August, the Post reported.

The senator told them it was possible to reach a deal including billions of dollars to fight climate change, cut prescription drug costs and update the tax code, the Post reported. But he wanted concessions on oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. The Interior Department has been slow to draft a new five-year plan for offshore oil and gas leasing in federal waters, while the current one is slated to expire at the end of June.

It's ironic. Dunning-Kruger alky used to constantly whine and fret over Trump having access to the nuclear codes. And here we are, with those same codes in the hands of a clown who can't even take an unscripted question from the press, or even control his bowels in the presence of the Holy See.

Of course I feel badly for all victims of this stupid war - Ukrainian citizens, Ukrainian fighters, Russian soldiers, etc. Bad for all involved. We all like narratives of good vs bad.

A commenter at Althouse ("Tim in Vermont") pretty much reflects my view:

Let's look at every reason but the expansion of a hostile and aggressive military alliance to Russia's border, because if we look at Putin's stated reasons, which every foreign policy expert who wasn't a neocon took for granted since we promised Gorbachov not to expand NATO east, that makes us the baddies, therefore we do these Putin mind-reading exercises to avoid dealing with our own culpability in this matter.

Russia's border is NATO's manifest destiny, right? My country, right or wrong, right? Ignorance is strength! We have been here before and it is not a proud chapter in our history.

Why did the Ukrainians undertake an offensive operation into Donbass (Where they have been committing war crimes like using white phosphorus artillery on civilian populations, BTW, for 8 years) , striking a match in the tinderbox, when Russian troops were massed on Ukraine's border, except to instigate a war?

Now the US strategy, cheered on here, is to drag out the war to maximize Russia's losses, no matter the cost in Ukrainian lives. We will see who comes out of this beloved by the victims in this war.

Clarence Thomas' wife Ginni reportedly texted Mark Meadows urging him to overturn the 2020 election.

The news prompted scrutiny on Thomas' lone dissent in a ruling rejecting Trump's bid to withhold docs from the Jan. 6 House panel.

The New York Times previously reported that Ginni Thomas had ties to organizers of the Jan. 6 rally, which she has denied.

In January, the Supreme Court rejected former President Donald Trump's bid to block the release of some presidential records to the House committee investigating the Capitol riot in a near unanimous 8-1 vote.

Only one justice dissented: Clarence Thomas.

Virginia Thomas urged White House chief to pursue unrelenting efforts to overturn the 2020 election, texts show
Virginia Thomas, a conservative activist married to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, repeatedly pressed White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to pursue unrelenting efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in a series of urgent text exchanges in the critical weeks after the vote, according to copies of the messages obtained by The Washington Post and CBS News.

The messages — 29 in all — reveal an extraordinary pipeline between Virginia Thomas, who goes by Ginni, and President Donald Trump’s top aide during a period when Trump and his allies were vowing to go to the Supreme Court in an effort to negate the election results.

On Nov. 10, after news organizations had projected Joe Biden the winner based on state vote totals, Thomas wrote to Meadows: “Help This Great President stand firm, Mark!!!...You are the leader, with him, who is standing for America’s constitutional governance at the precipice. The majority knows Biden and the Left is attempting the greatest Heist of our History.”

When Meadows wrote to Thomas on Nov. 24, the White House chief of staff invoked God to describe the effort to overturn the election. “This is a fight of good versus evil,” Meadows wrote. “Evil always looks like the victor until the King of Kings triumphs. Do not grow weary in well doing. The fight continues. I have staked my career on it. Well at least my time in DC on it.”

Thomas replied: “Thank you!! Needed that! This plus a conversation with my best friend just now… I will try to keep holding on. America is worth it!”

It is unclear to whom Thomas was referring.

The messages, which do not directly reference Justice Thomas or the Supreme Court, show for the first time how Ginni Thomas used her access to Trump’s inner circle to promote and seek to guide the president’s strategy to overturn the election results — and how receptive and grateful Meadows said he was to receive her advice. Among Thomas’s stated goals in the messages was for lawyer Sidney Powell, who promoted incendiary and unsupported claims about the election, to be “the lead and the face” of Trump’s legal team.

The text messages were among 2,320 that Meadows provided to the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The content of messages between Thomas and Meadows — 21 sent by her, eight by him – has not previously been reported. They were reviewed by The Post and CBS News and then confirmed by five people who have seen the committee’s documents.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Meadows’s attorney, George Terwilliger III, confirmed the existence of the 29 messages between his client and Thomas. In reviewing the substance of the messages Wednesday, he said that neither he nor Meadows would comment on individual texts. But, Terwilliger added, “nothing about the text messages presents any legal issues.”

Ginni Thomas did not respond to multiple requests for comment made Thursday by email and phone. Justice Thomas, who has been hospitalized for treatment of an infection, did not respond to a request for comment made through the Supreme Court’s public information office.

It is unknown whether Ginni Thomas and Meadows exchanged additional messages between the election and Biden’s inauguration beyond the 29 received by the committee. Shortly after providing the 2,320 messages, Meadows ceased cooperating with the committee, arguing that any further engagement could violate Trump’s claims of executive privilege. Committee members and aides said they believe the messages may be just a portion of the pair’s total exchanges.

A spokesman for the committee declined to comment. The revelation of Thomas’s messages with Meadows comes three weeks after lawyers for the committee said in a court filing that the panel has “a good-faith basis for concluding that the President and members of his Campaign engaged in a criminal conspiracy to defraud the United States” and obstruct the counting of electoral votes by Congress.

Trump spoke publicly during this period about his intent to contest the election results in the Supreme Court. “This is a major fraud on our nation,” the president said in a speech at 2:30 the morning after the election. “We want the law to be used in a proper manner. So we’ll be going to the U.S. Supreme Court.”

Thomas has publicly denied any conflict of interest between her activism and her husband’s work on the Supreme Court. “Clarence doesn’t discuss his work with me, and I don’t involve him in my work,” she said in an interview with the Washington Free Beacon, a conservative outlet, for an article published March 14.

Ginni Thomas, in that interview, also acknowledged that she had attended Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally at the Ellipse near the White House on Jan. 6, but said that she left early because it was too cold and that she did not have any role in planning the event.

Justice Thomas, 73, is the Supreme Court’s longest-serving current justice and has missed oral arguments this week because of his hospitalization. He has made few public comments about the 2020 election. In February 2021, when the Supreme Court rejected election challenges filed by Trump and his allies, Thomas wrote in a dissent that it was “baffling” and “inexplicable” that the majority had decided against hearing the cases because he believed the Supreme Court should provide states with guidance for future elections.

In her text messages to Meadows, Ginni Thomas spread false theories, commented on cable news segments and advocated with urgency and fervor that the president and his team take action to reverse the outcome of the election. She urged that they take a hard line with Trump staffers and congressional Republicans who had resisted arguments that the election was stolen.

Zelenskyy accused Russia of using phosphorus bombs. What does that mean?
NBC Universal
DANIEL ARKIN AND DAN DE LUCE
March 24, 2022, 3:39 PM
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday accused Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces of using phosphorus bombs in their latest wave of attacks on his country, telling NATO leaders in Brussels that “people were killed,” including children.

“Europe is going through a war, every day of which is full of war crimes of Russian troops,” Zelenskyy said, according to an NBC News translation. “This morning, I received information that Russian troops had used phosphorus bombs against civilians in Ukraine.”

He did not provide evidence in his address, and the Pentagon said it was not able to confirm the Ukrainian leader’s allegation when contacted by NBC News. It is difficult to verify the claims without U.S. personnel on the ground, three U.S. defense officials said.

But if true, the use of white phosphorus bombs would add a disturbing new dimension to Russia’s military assault on Ukraine. Here’s a general overview of their destructive potential.

What is white phosphorus?
The white form of the chemical substance phosphorus is highly toxic and “notorious for the severity of the injuries it causes,” according to information compiled by Human Rights Watch, a leading watchdog organization.

White phosphorus ignites on contact with oxygen and is highly soluble in fat, meaning it grievously burns human flesh.

“If it lands on somebody, it burns very, very vigorously,” said Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former commander of the United Kingdom's and NATO’s chemical, biological and nuclear defense forces.

Munitions — artillery shells, bombs, rockets, mortars — containing white phosphorus operate similarly to incendiary weapons as defined by Protocol III to the 1980 Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons:

They set fires and cause burns “through the action of flame, heat, or combination thereof, produced by a chemical reaction of a substance delivered on the target.”

What does the law say?
The use of white phosphorus is not outright banned under international weapons law.

It is not illegal for militaries to possess it, and armed forces around the world (including U.S. troops) have said they use it to mark a target or create a smokescreen, according to David E. Johnson, a military expert with the Rand Corp.

But like all weapons, it is illegal to use against civilian targets, and the use of air-dropped incendiary weapons in populated areas is prohibited under Protocol III, Johnson said.

“Going after civilian targets indiscriminately is the biggest war crime there is, no matter what the weapon,” he said.

Where has it been used?
Human Rights Watch says munitions containing white phosphorus have been deployed “repeatedly” over the last 15 years, including by U.S. and U.K. forces in Iraq; American-led coalition forces against Islamic State terrorist group's militants in Iraq and Syria in 2017; and by Israel in Gaza in 2008-09.

Syrian forces (with Putin’s support) have used white phosphorus to set fire to towns and villages, de Bretton-Gordon said, describing “horrendous images from northeast Syria last year of children being terribly, badly burned.”

White phosphorus munitions have also been used by Saudi Arabian-led coalition forces in Yemen in 2016; by NATO-allied security forces and the Taliban in Afghanistan between 2005 and 2011; and by Ethiopian forces in Somalia in 2007, according to Human Rights Watch.

Zelenskyy accused Russia of using phosphorus bombs. What does that mean?

Why did the Ukrainians undertake an offensive operation into Donbass (Where they have been committing war crimes like using white phosphorus artillery on civilian populations, BTW, for 8 years) , striking a match in the tinderbox, when Russian troops were massed on Ukraine's border, except to instigate a war?

FROM WAY BACK IN NOVEMBER OF 2020:

President Zelensky: Information on Supply of Phosphorus Bombs from Ukraine to Azerbaijan ‒ Russian Fake
November 3, 2020

Vladimir Zelensky SAYS:
The Ukrainian state has never supplied any phosphorus bombs anywhere, especially to hot spots. President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on his Facebook page in response to accusations by Russian-Armenian director Sarik Andreasyan, who stated that Ukraine had supplied weapons to Azerbaijan.

“Ukraine has never and nowhere supplied any phosphorus bombs whatsoever. Moreover, to places where it is already hot and where there are already a lot of hotheads who want to cope with something there ‘geopolitically,'” the State’s Head declared.

According to him, such information attacks are not appearing for the first time. In particular, at first, they lied about Ukraine and the war in Donbas, then they lied about Ukraine and the war in Syria. Now, it appears in the context of the war in Nagorny Karabakh.

“It is definitely unnecessary to take on the role of somebody’s fake carrier. I understand what and why Russian propaganda performs, and why it lies totally… And everything is done by the same people … Therefore, before saying something about Ukraine, one needs to truthfully answer a simple question oneself: who benefits from falsehood about wars and about Ukraine?” the President asked.

In his opinion, the truth will be revealed if one only critically evaluates the information in the media space, given how many fake throws there have been performed in recent years. Zelensky stressed that it is well known in Ukraine who disseminates such “information” and why.

“We already have the immunity to all this. So does Europe. And you need to form it as soon as possible. Because it’s like Covid ‒ a very insidious enemy who knows no bounds. Therefore, wash your hands more often after contacts with well-known propaganda,” the Head of State advised.

At the same time, he stressed that Ukraine opposes any bloody conflicts, does not support escalation, and does not fuel the confrontation because it has been living in a state of a brutal war for seven years.

“We are categorically against wars and against provocations on military issues. This is confirmed by our desire for peace,” the President emphasised.

Besides, Zelensky addressed Andreasyan personally about where he was when the war came to Ukraine and when Ukrainian citizens, including those of Armenian origin, died.

“What did you personally say then against this aggression? Nothing? I understand as it wasn’t your war! And today it has become scary because this horror came to your home. For me personally, everything is simple and clear: I am always exclusively for peace. And Ukraine certainly does support no weapons supply to anyone. Unlike another famous country, that just supplies weapons to everyone. Because wars for it are bread and blood. Morality cannot be double ‒ for oneself and for others. Think about it,” Zelensky advised.

Earlier it was reported that Russian-Armenian filmmaker, scenarist, and producer Sarik Andreasyan addressed the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky via Instagram and accused him of supplying phosphorus bombs to Azerbaijan. The men have known each other for a long time. Ten years ago Zelensky starred in Andreasyan’s comedy film.

Isn't it ironic the same GOP supported male white judges who did the same thing......Anyone think that is a coincidence or is it the racism we all know exists on the right side of this country??????

WASHINGTON — Several Republican senators repeatedly and misleadingly suggested during this week’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings that Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson had given uncommonly lenient sentences to felons convicted of child sex abuse crimes.

But all of the Republican critics had previously voted to confirm judges who had given out prison terms below prosecutor recommendations, the very bar they accused Judge Jackson of failing to clear.

Just 30 percent of offenders who possessed or shared images of child sex abuse received a sentence within the range suggested by nonbinding federal guidelines in the 2019 fiscal year, and 59 percent received a sentence below the guideline range. And in general, it is not uncommon for judges to impose shorter sentences than what prosecutors have recommended.

“I listed these seven cases in which you had discretion and you did not follow the prosecutor’s recommendation or the sentencing guidelines,” Senator Josh Hawley, Republican of Missouri, said at Judge Jackson’s hearing on Tuesday. “I’m questioning how you used your discretion in these cases.”

Manchin cited Jackson’s “exemplary” career and record and said that her various roles in the judicial system have provided her with “a unique perspective that will serve her well on our nation’s highest court.”

The price of the sanctions is not just imposed upon Russia'

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

After weeks of clearly stating that the U.S. would avoid any kind of military intervention in Ukraine, President Joe Biden shifted to a more aggressive posture toward Russia on Thursday. Speaking at NATO headquarters in Brussels, he told reporters that if Russian President Vladimir Putin were to use chemical weapons in Ukraine, NATO would respond in some form, without specifying how.

At the news conference, ABC News’ Cecilia Vega asked Biden, “If chemical weapons were used in Ukraine, would that trigger a military response from NATO?”

Biden replied: “It would trigger a response in kind, whether or not, you’re asking whether NATO would cross — we’d make that decision at the time.

Biden's response marked a pivot from his usual position of ruling out the possibility of a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia except in self-defense. Now he’s signaling that if Russia uses chemical weapons against Ukraine, which is not in NATO, it would cross some kind of line that could, theoretically, prompt a military response from NATO.

I'm so glad that we have a real human being as our President.

Putin knows Biden is not "actually" suggesting military action. A "response" could be nothing more than a good tongue lashing and finger wagging teleprompted speech to really let the old Commie have it.

Oh... and another sanction.

Russia Signals Scaled-Back War Aims
1:28 pm EDT
“Moscow signaled on Friday it was scaling back its ambitions in Ukraine to focus on territory claimed by Russian-backed separatists as Ukrainian forces went on the offensive to recapture towns on the outskirts of the capital Kyiv,”
Reuters reports.

However, the AP reports Vladimir Putin’s war “is approaching a new, potentially more dangerous phase after a month of fighting has left Russian forces stalled by an outnumbered foe.

“He is left with stark choices — how and where to replenish his spent ground forces, whether to attack the flow of Western arms to Ukrainian defenders, and at what cost he might escalate or widen the war.”
