How the BBC is reporting on the war

  • The Russian defence ministry warns Kyiv residents that it is preparing to hit targets in the Ukrainian capital
  • It warns of attacks on Kyiv technology centres, urging nearby residents to leave
  • A huge convoy of Russian armoured vehicles continues to advance on the city
  • President Zelensky of Ukraine receives a standing ovation in the European Parliament, telling them by video link: "Nobody will break us"

So defiance is all good and well, and it's pretty hard to blame people for wanting to protect their own neighborhoods, workplaces, and homes from a foreign invasion. I certainly would want to protect my home. But when you look at all of the destruction and watch as things get ramped up even higher, you start to wonder at what point do you have to start thinking of other decisions. Especially considering the feckless response from the rest of the world, content on just watching it all play out.

While everyone (well nearly everyone) is rooting for Russia to fail and Ukraine to be rewarded for their defiance, it seems that Russia is holding most all of the cards. They appear to have Kyiv surrounded (or will shortly) with a 40 kilometer long convoy of heavy artillery (and this cannot be described by anyone as proof of failure). They appear to now be able to target Ukrainian locations with long range missiles and are threatening to do so.

Unfortunately for Zelenskyy you cannot have your cake and eat it too. You cannot stay in Kyiv in defiance, arm your citizens with rifles and other equipment, demand that Ukrainian citizens will fight to the death, and then declare that military action against these same citizens are war crimes. The whole invasion is a war crime. Putin should be tried as a war criminal either way. However, once you arm non-military people without providing them uniforms, they are enemy combatants and not protected by the Geneva Convention. At this point it is war.

This is the sort of rock and hard place that no leader ever wants to face. Zelenskyy has met it head on with bravery and defiance that has inspired a great deal many people. He did not accept our offer to evacuate him and his government. But this was always a risky move and the risk was always going to be a lot of death and destruction.

The best hope for Zelenskyy and Ukraine is for the European Union to not just give him a standing ovation, but to give him some military support. We all know Biden is not stepping up to provide it, so unless people actually want to see Kyiv continue to be bombed and unless we want to continue to see citizens killed, someone has to step up and fight with the Ukrainians, not just applaud them.

I think time is running out for the world to act. People like Xi and Kim Jung-un are watching.

all of the smarmy rhetoric was wunnerful until push came to shove.

Faced with actually providing tangible military aide- fighter jets, etc. - they all remembered their status as NATO members and quietly backed down and slinked away.

Make a solid, tangible pledge to Putin that Ukraine WILL NOT be allowed into NATO and this 'conflict' ends today.

Even - China begins evacuating nationals from Ukraine!

On the sixth day of fighting in Ukraine Tuesday, Russia is striking cities and building up its forces near the capital Kyiv, vowing not to stop until "set goals are achieved".

Here is a summary of the situation on the ground, based on statements from the warring sides, Western defense and intelligence sources and international organizations.

The military situation:

- Russia says will continue "until set goals are achieved"

- Satellite images show 65-kilometer (40-mile) column of Russian trucks, armored vehicles and artillery north of Kyiv

- Citizens build barricades in city centre

- Russia tells residents near Kyiv intelligence structure to evacuate

- Russian troops and pro-Moscow rebels link up in a key region in eastern Ukraine, Moscow says

- Ukraine says has taken out hundreds of Russian pieces of weaponry, including 29 aircraft, 29 helicopters and 198 tanks

- Russian shelling of Kharkiv kills 10 or more, wounds 20, Ukraine says

- Ukraine says Russia firing rockets into residential areas after failing to take Kharkiv and Chernihiv

- Russian army sets up checkpoints at southern city of Kherson, mayor says

- Russia says fired long-range high-precision weapons from the sea, hitting two unspecified airfields and three air defense radars

- Russian forces made little progress in past 24 hours and don't control Ukraine's airspace, British intelligence says

- France sends hundreds more troops into Romania

- NATO will "defend every inch" of its territory, alliance chief says

The civilian/humanitarian situation:

- UN says 12 million people in Ukraine will need aid

- One million people are displaced within Ukraine, and more than 660,000 have fled abroad, UN says

- China begins evacuating nationals from Ukraine

The US has “indications that morale is flagging in some” of the Russian forces’ units, a senior US defense official claimed on Tuesday.

“We have picked up independently on our own, indications that morale is flagging in some of these units. That they again did not expect the resistance that they were going to get, and that their own morale has suffered as a result,” the official said.

A significant number of the Russian military forces being used to invade Ukraine are “conscripts, very young men drafted into service,” the official said.

“Apparently, again, we’re picking this up as best we can, but not all of them are apparently fully trained and prepared or even aware that they were going to be sent in to a combat operation,” the official added.

Resistance from almost every other people they might not risk their lives

"The entire world is watching as Vladimir Putin uses energy as a weapon in an attempt to extort and coerce our European allies. While Americans decry what is happening in Ukraine, the United States continues to allow the import of more than half a million barrels per day of crude oil and other petroleum products from Russia during this time of war. This makes no sense at all and represents a clear and present danger to our nation's energy security. The United States can and must ramp up domestic energy production and increase access to our abundant resources and technologies to both protect our energy independence and support our allies around the globe. If there was ever a time to be energy independent, it is now. I am calling on the Administration and industry partners to take action immediately, up to and including banning crude oil imports from Russia. To continue to ask other countries to do what we can do for ourselves in a cleaner way is hypocritical. To continue to rely on Russian energy as they attack Ukraine is senseless."

It is worth recalling how Carter reacted to these events. In the case of Iran, he infamously ordered a rescue mission — Operation Eagle Claw — that ended in humiliating failure on April 24, 1980, when one of the U.S. helicopters intended to evacuate the hostages crashed into a transport aircraft, killing eight American servicemen. But he also imposed economic sanctions, freezing about $8.1 billion in Iranian assets and imposing a trade embargo.

In the case of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Carter again opted for sanctions. He placed an embargo on shipments of commodities such as grain to the Soviet Union and suspended high-technology exports. He also boycotted the 1980 Olympics in Moscow and withdrew the SALT II treaty from consideration by the Senate.

Carter’s approval rating had touched an all-time low of 28% in June 1979 and, despite rallying briefly in early 1980, never got back above 40% as the election campaign unfolded. Inflation, which had stood at 5.2% in the month of Carter’s inauguration, hit an all-time high of 14.6% in April 1980, driven skyward by the surge in oil prices that followed the Iranian Revolution.

In January 1979, the spot crude price for a barrel of West Texas Intermediate had been $14.85. By July 1980 it had more than doubled to $39.50. Carter tried to counter inflation by nominating Paul Volcker to be Fed chair in July 1979. But, as Milton Friedman long ago taught us, monetary policy operates with long and variable lags. Inflationary expectations were not truly broken until 1982.

If all of this sounds strangely familiar, it is because we are living through our own version of these events. Karl Marx memorably observed that history repeats itself “the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.” But sometimes you just get two tragedies in succession.

Updated Mar 1, 2022
Kyiv, Ukraine (CNN) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged US counterpart Joe Biden to deliver a strong and "useful" message about the Russian invasion at his State of the Union speech on Tuesday, in an exclusive interview with CNN and Reuters from the bunker in Kyiv in which he is leading his military's response.

In the rare interview on Tuesday afternoon, Zelensky said that as long as Moscow's attacks on Ukrainian cities continued, little progress could be made in talks between the two nations.
"You have to speak first of all. Everybody has to stop fighting and to go [back] to that point from where it began five, six days ago," Zelensky said. "I think there are principal things you can do ... If you do this, and that side does this, it means they are ready for peace. If they (are not) ready, it means you're just wasting time."

Asked if he felt Ukraine was wasting its time by talking with Russia, he said: "We'll see." Officials from the two countries met for the first time on Monday since Russia's invasion began last week.
Zelensky has drawn global praise for his response to the invasion, having refused offers to evacuate and instead delivering frequent messages to Ukrainians as Kyiv comes under Russian assault.

Earlier on Tuesday he received a standing ovation for an emotional address to the European Parliament via video link, telling delegates: "We are fighting for our life."

Asked by CNN about his transformation from comic actor to world-famous wartime leader, Zelensky responded: "It's very serious, it's not a movie ... I'm not iconic, I think Ukraine is iconic."
"Ukraine is the heart of Europe, and now I think Europe sees Ukraine is something special for this world," he added. "That's why [the] world can't lose this something special."

Fresh strikes rocked Kyiv on Tuesday, with Russia ramping up its assault on the capital and other key locations. There are fears that Russia is attempting to knock out the city's communications infrastructure after hitting an area near Kyiv's TV tower, taking out broadcasting hardware, according to Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The Ukrainian leader appeared tired and stressed but was friendly with crews from CNN and Reuters. He said he hadn't seen his family for three days; asked what his typical days are like, he said: "Work and sleep."

The President has to send a message to the people, to unite the country and defeat Russia. because this is the most dangerous situation since the end of the cold war.

This war (for lack of a better term) is happening 100% on Ukrainian soil. All of the destruction and most of the casualties are going to be Ukrainian and all "collateral damage" and civilian casualties will be Ukrainian.

No Russian homes are being destroyed and no Russian building are being bombed. There are no foreign troops that are on the outskirts of Moscow waiting to attack. Ukraine is 100% defensive and Russia is 100% offensive.

NATO isn’t without its authoritarians —namely, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. But as Schake notes, even Hungary and Turkey have taken stands against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Hungary, thought to be the weakest link in the western chain, has supported without question moves by the European Union and NATO to punish Moscow,” Schake observes. “Turkey — arguably the most Russia-friendly NATO country, having bought missile defense systems from Moscow — has invoked its responsibilities in the 1936 Montreux Convention and closed the Bosporus strait to Russian warships.”

The Never Trumper adds, “NATO deployed its rapid-reaction force for the first time, and allies are rushing to send troops to reinforce frontline states. A cascade of places have closed their airspace to Russian craft. The United States has orchestrated action and gracefully let others have the stage, strengthening allies and institutions.”

With the ruble plunging and the U.S. banning transactions with the Russian central bank, operating in Russia has become deeply problematic. Some companies have concluded that the risks, both reputational and financial, are too great to continue.”

With the Russian invasion of Ukraine getting more horrific, Donald Trump and his allies are frantically erasing the truth about Trump’s relations with Ukraine. Trump absurdly claims that as president, he stood strong behind Ukraine and NATO, even as his spinners comically downplay his corrupt and deeply malevolent betrayal of our ally.

The obvious rejoinder to this spin is that Trump got impeached for withholding military aid to strong-arm Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into manufacturing propaganda to help Trump’s reelection. This came even as Zelensky pleaded for help against Russian aggression, which the world is now witnessing unfold in all its horror.

But the focus only on that episode risks oversimplifying the story. It casts this recent history as being mainly about Trump’s personal corruption, i.e., his effort to use foreign policy to smear his campaign opponent.

A broader focus shows that this saga was, and is, really about the United States’ foreign policy posture: In episode after episode, Trump aligned our interests with those of Russian President Vladimir Putin and against those of Ukraine, NATO and the West.

“Trump acted against U.S. interests with the consequence of aiding Russian interests,” Alexander Vindman, the former lieutenant colonel who testified dramatically against Trump, told me.

Vindman said the United States should have spent Trump’s first term “hardening” Ukraine to “prevent Russia from thinking this is a viable course of action.”

All this is particularly pressing, given that Trump is likely to run for president again.

The simplest way to illustrate this is by recalling five other things Trump did with regard to Zelensky and Ukraine:

1. Spread propaganda about Ukrainian interference in the 2016 election

As early as 2017, Trump began voicing the conspiracy theory that Ukraine, not Russia, had interfered in the 2016 presidential election. This was one of the things Trump pressured Zelensky to “investigate” while withholding military aid.

It’s complete nonsense, and crucially, it echoed Russian propaganda that had a geopolitical purpose. Putin himself reportedly put this idea in Trump’s head. And Fiona Hill, then a top national security official, testified that this propaganda helped Russia by deflecting attention from Russia’s own interference in 2016 and by dividing the United States from an ally.

And don’t forget: At the time, some Republican lawmakers lent support to Trump’s lie about Ukraine, thus advancing “Russian interests,” as Hill put it.

2. Ousted the well-regarded U.S. ambassador to Ukraine

Trump pushed out Marie Yovanovitch in 2019, after his lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani mounted a smear campaign against her. Yovanovitch was perceived as disloyal to Trump.

Here again the move apparently advanced Russia’s geopolitical interests at Ukraine’s expense. As the House impeachment report details, it hampered the United States’ ability to develop relations with Ukraine amid a “period of transition” — Zelensky was then a new president — and amid efforts to fend off Russian aggression.

3. Froze military assistance to Ukraine

Well before extorting Zelensky, Trump alarmed officials by freezing military aid to Ukraine that Congress had appropriated, but without meaningful policy justification. Crucially, officials subsequently testified that granting this aid was important in dissuading Russian aggression, which would be in European and U.S. interests.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

4. Withheld a White House meeting from Zelensky

In 2019, Trump communicated in various ways to Zelensky that a much-sought-after White House meeting would be conditioned on doing his corrupt dirt-digging on Joe Biden.

Numerous high level officials later testified that this meeting was critical to Zelensky. It would grant him prestige and send an international message that the United States was siding with Ukraine against Russian aggression.

5. Turned Ukraine policy over to Giuliani

This was one of the most shocking subplots: Trump repeatedly instructed Zelensky to contact Giuliani to discuss what Zelensky would be required to do to please Trump. Giuliani’s circumvention of national security protocols deeply alarmed officials.

That effectively handed potential influence over the future of U.S.-Ukraine relations to Trump’s personal lawyer — to the ringleader of the scheme to pressure Ukraine into helping Trump further corrupt our own elections.

All this has important forward-looking implications, now that Trump may run for president again. As president in 2025, he’d be stewarding relations with Russia, Ukraine and NATO, but after this war has unfolded.

Right now we’re seeing extraordinary unity among the United Statesand its allies as it imposes harsh sanctions on Russia and otherwise tries to dissuade Putin’s invasion. Trump would almost surely rupture that.

“With Trump as president in 2025, we’re quite likely looking at a world in which Russia may have achieved its objectives and folded Ukraine back into its sphere of influence,” Vindman told me.

Even if Russia falls short, Vindman added, Trump would be president at a time when “a belligerent, aggressive Russia wants to rebuild the Soviet Union” and “potentially get back the Baltics.”

This could be made worse, Vindman said, given “Trump’s established preferences” to “continue to weaken NATO and serve Russia.” The result could be “enormous instability.”

So Trump’s track record on Ukraine is about far more than his own personal corruption. It also raises questions about what would happen if Trump is president again in the aftermath of Russia’s conquest — questions that, to put it mildly, are deeply unsettling indeed.

President Joe Biden will deliver his first State of the Union address in the US House chamber Tuesday evening, using his biggest platform of the year to condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin for invading Ukraine.

According to excerpts provided ahead of the speech by the White House, Biden is set to tout the West's response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and condemn the Russian leader for his aggression.
"Putin's war was premeditated and unprovoked. He rejected efforts at diplomacy. He thought the West and NATO wouldn't respond. And, he thought he could divide us here at home," Biden will say, according to the excerpts. "Putin was wrong. We were ready."

The initial excerpts provided by the White House showed how the speech has evolved in recent days as a result of invasion of Ukraine. The annual speech also marks an opportunity for him to speak directly to the American people about his vision to build a better country, demonstrating how he'll lead America out of the Covid-19 pandemic, into an economic recovery and through the ramifications of a war between Ukraine and Russia.

Biden will recognize his administration's major accomplishments, including the nomination of the first Black woman to the Supreme Court and the passage of his first two major legislative priorities in his first year in office. He'll discuss the prospect of a return to normalcy as Covid cases wane inside a full room where masks are optional -- a marked departure from his joint address to Congress last year, when masks were required and seating was limited. And he will seek to recalibrate an economic message that acknowledges the hardships many Americans are facing amid higher prices, launching a new plan to lower costs for American families.

During the speech, Biden is expected to lay out a plan to fight inflation, saying the nation has "a choice. One way to fight inflation is to drive down wages and make Americans poorer. I have a better plan to fight inflation."

"Lower your costs, not your wages. Make more cars and semiconductors in America. More infrastructure and innovation in America. More goods moving faster and cheaper in America. More jobs where you can earn a good living in America. And, instead of relying on foreign supply chains -- let's make it in America," Biden will say, according to the excerpts. "Economists call it 'increasing the productive capacity of our economy.' I call it building a better America. My plan to fight inflation will lower your costs and lower the deficit."

These Democrats have started bloody wars in the Middle East; financed theocratic Iran, helping the deranged mullahs to create a nuclear arsenal; and done nothing to stop China in its offensive against the whole world. Biden explicitly told Putin that American would not intervene against a Russian “incursion” in Ukraine—after which Putin did what he was supposed to do: he launched his blitzkrieg.

Mr. Biden, who has teamed up with European leaders to sanction not just Russian institutions but Mr. Putin personally, highlighted the unified response to Russia’s invasion. “Putin’s war was premeditated and unprovoked,” he said in the excerpts. “He rejected efforts at diplomacy. He thought the West and NATO wouldn’t respond. And he thought he could divide us here at home. Putin was wrong. We were ready.”

To hail the heroism of the Ukrainian resistance, Jill Biden invited Oksana Markarova, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, to join her in the first lady’s box for the address.

But the speech was originally supposed to be an opportunity for Mr. Biden to reset his presidency after months of political and economic travails at home and the White House was loath to let the foreign crisis completely overwhelm his domestic agenda.

Hoping to underscore his progress in containing the coronavirus pandemic and rebuilding the economy, the White House sent mainly domestic officials to make television appearances previewing the speech and blitzed out fact sheets focused on initiatives on issues like clean energy, aid to veterans, supply chains and mental health programs.

Stymied in his effort to pass a sweeping $1.8 trillion social spending initiative, Mr. Biden planned to urge Congress to at least approve some of its component parts aimed at lowering the cost of child care, elder care and prescription drugs. And he intended to draw attention to his nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to be the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

In particular, Mr. Biden wanted to reassure Americans feeling the pinch of rising inflation, which has taken a toll on his political standing as well, vowing to bring down prices by driving up production.

“Lower your costs, not your wages,” he said in the excerpts. “Make more cars and semiconductors in America. More infrastructure and innovation in America. More goods moving faster and cheaper in America. More jobs where you can earn a good living in America. And, instead of relying on foreign supply chains, let’s make it in America.”

In a sign of the times, the speech will take place in a Capitol once again ringed by security fences and National Guard troops, almost 14 months after the building was stormed by a violent mob egged on by President Donald J. Trump in an effort to stop the counting of Electoral College votes sealing Mr. Biden’s victory.

But in a more hopeful indicator, the chamber will once again be full, or closer to it, as all members of the House and Senate were invited, rather than limiting the audience to a fraction of its usual size as it was last year out of concern over Covid-19. And while testing is required, masks are optional.

The speech comes at a politically shaky moment for Mr. Biden and the country. After two years of struggling with the pandemic and related economic troubles, the state of the union is sour. Fully 70 percent of Americans surveyed by The Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research said the nation was heading in the wrong direction, the kind of number that typically spells trouble in a midterm election year for the party in power.

.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Mr. Biden has lost the confidence of many Americans in the year since taking office. His approval rating in recent days has been measured anywhere from 44 percent by The A.P. and NORC to as low as 37 percent by The Washington Post and ABC News. Judging by Gallup’s numbers, no elected president in modern times has been as low at this point in his tenure other than Mr. Trump.

Moreover, the tradition of rallying around the president during a crisis has long since faded and many Americans are viewing the conflict with Russia through a partisan lens. Just 3 percent of voters who supported Mr. Trump in 2020 say Mr. Biden is doing a better job leading his country than Mr. Putin is in leading his own, according to a poll by Yahoo News and YouGov, while 47 percent believe the Russian leader is doing better than their own president.

While Mr. Biden addressed a joint session of Congress last year shortly after taking office, this will be his first official State of the Union as president. The Russian invasion forced White House aides to rewrite the speech to focus more on the crisis and America’s place in defending the world order.

While some have pressed him to be even tougher, Mr. Biden has had bipartisan backing from lawmakers as he imposes economic sanctions on Russia and sends American troops to NATO allies near Ukraine to reassure them. Any comments castigating Moscow could prompt that rarest of scenes during a State of the Union: Both sides of the aisle rising to applaud.

“I think there’s broad support for the president in what he’s doing now,” Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican minority leader, told reporters several hours before the speech. “Our biggest complaint is, what took him so long?”

Yet talks over a $6.4 billion security and humanitarian aid package for Ukraine bogged down in the Senate over whether the money should come out of the same total military spending allocation previously agreed to or be considered emergency money on top of that. “We’ve hit a snag,” Mr. McConnell reported.

Mr. Biden will otherwise face a divided chamber of Democrats anxious for him to regain political traction before they head to the polls this fall and Republicans eager to translate public discontent into control of one or both houses of Congress.

In a sign of the complicated political landscape, Mr. Biden will be followed not just by the traditional Republican response, to be delivered by Gov. Kim Reynolds of Iowa, but by a separate responses by several members of his own party: Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan for the progressive Working Families Party, Representative Colin Allred of Texas for the Congressional Black Caucus, and Representative Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey for the bipartisan group No Labels

Speaking during the Wisconsin Assembly Committee on Campaigns and Elections informational hearing on Tuesday, Gableman said his 136-page report found that “Wisconsin election officials’ unlawful conduct in the 2020 Presidential election casts grave doubt on Wisconsin’s 2020 Presidential election certification.”

“Our recommendations are fairly predictable considering what we just covered…The elimination of WEC (Wisconsin Election Commission)…At this point, I believe the legislature ought to take a very hard look at the option of decertification of the 2020 Wisconsin Presidential Election,” Gableman told the committee.

Gableman also recommended dissolving the Wisconsin Elections Commission, but added that decertification wouldn’t compel Biden to leave the White House.

Once the audience began applauding Gableman’s recommendation, the assembly chairs immediately threatened to shut down the hearing.

“Wisconsin election law does not explicitly authorize the decertification of electors. But neither does it prevent it,” the report reads, adding that “an election of presidential electors that violates Wisconsin (or any other state legislature’s relevant laws) is both void and voidable.”

The report also detailed how the WEC “unlawfully directed municipal clerks” to ignore the state election code rules on voting in nursing homes: 100% of registered voters cast ballots in the 2020 election in nursing homes throughout the state — an implausible and suspicious rate.

Additionally, non-citizen and incapacitated citizens also remained listed on Wisconsin’s voting rolls in violation of the law.

Finally, Gableman’s report also found that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg violated Wisconsin bribery laws by funneling nearly $9 million into five Democratic strongholds to fund the placement of illegal drop boxes.

The invasion of Ukraine shows that America must commit to standing with allies and friends abroad to ultimately overcome adversaries, President Joe Biden said in his first State of the Union address on Tuesday.

Biden said Russian President Vladimir Putin’s move was the latest evidence that “when dictators do not pay a price for their aggression, they cause more chaos. They keep moving. And the costs and threats to America and the world keep rising.”

Through the U.S. and allied response, Putin will ultimately find that he “badly miscalculated,” Biden continued. Addressing lawmakers ― “as Democrats Republicans and independents, but most importantly as Americans ― he said the nation shares “an unwavering resolve that freedom will always triumph over tyranny.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

He established himself as the leader of the world.

President Biden delivered his first State of the Union address tonight, as he seeks to tamp down a war in Ukraine, guide the U.S. and its economy through the Covid-19 pandemic, and help buoy Democrats in November’s midterm elections.

In the speech, Mr. Biden said that Russian President Vladimir Putin miscalculated on how forcefully America and its allies would respond, and announced the U.S. is banning Russian aircraft from American airspace. Mr. Biden also pitched his plan to drive down inflation by boosting domestic manufacturing.

He said the country "has reached a new moment in the fight against Covid-19," while touting progress on tests and treatments.

Biden Urges Senate to Pass Stalled Election Bills

President Biden said the right to vote is under assault. “In state after state, new laws have been passed, not only to suppress the vote -- we’ve been there before -- but to subvert the entire election.” he said. “We cannot let this happen.”

Mr. Biden called on the Senate to pass three election bills. They would set minimum standards for voting options nationwide; restore provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that Supreme Court rulings have weakened; and require groups that spend money in elections to disclose major donors.

But Democrats’ federal election proposals have been stalled, and Mr. Biden didn't go into detail tonight about any potential path forward.

Earlier this year, Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona sided with all Republicans to vote against changing the Senate’s filibuster procedures, blocking Democrats’ efforts to pass election legislation over Republican opposition.

Democrats say federal rules are needed to counter the actions of many Republican-controlled states that tightened their voting laws after the 2020 election, including Texas, Georgia, Florida, and others. Republicans say their policies will improve the security of the election system, and that voters have plenty of opportunity to cast a ballot. Former President Donald Trump continues to falsely clai that the 2020 election was stolen.

I was impressed by the President of the United States of America. Even the Republicans clapped and cheered.

President Joe Biden did not need to mention former President Donald Trump's name to draw serious contrast with his predecessor by touting the success of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework during his first State of the Union Address on Tuesday.

"At this point in the Trump presidency, “Infrastructure Week” is less a date on the calendar than it is a “Groundhog Day”-style fever dream doomed to be repeated," the newspaper reported. "Roughly two years after the White House first came up with the idea of discussing, for all of seven days, the pursuit of a bipartisan agreement to rebuild the nation’s roads, bridges and broadband networks, President Trump more or less torpedoed those plans on Wednesday in a Rose Garden speech. In the process, he gave Democrats a helpful sound bite when he said he would not pursue a legislative agenda while under investigation by House committees."

Biden alluded to Trump's failures during his speech to a joint-session of Congress.

"We’re done talking about infrastructure weeks. We’re now talking about an infrastructure decade," Biden said.

Fact Checker: Biden wrong on gun-manufacturer liability
By Glenn Kessler
“Look, repeal the liability shield. It makes gun manufacturers the only industry in America that can’t be sued.”
This is false. Gun manufacturers can certainly be sued — and some other industries have some liability protections.
Biden appears to be referring to the 2005 Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which was passed after a wave of lawsuits filed against gun manufacturers by municipalities and gun-control advocates.
The 2005 law does not guarantee blanket immunity, and it has some exceptions. Manufacturers or dealers can be sued if they knowingly sold a product that would be used to commit a crime. They can be sued if they were negligent in selling the product to someone they knew was unfit (i.e., a child or someone who was drunk). They can be sued for another technical negligence claim (“negligence per se”) that relates to the violation of a safety statute.

(CNN)President Joe Biden sounded an optimistic note in wrapping his first State of the Union address, citing the response of the American people and lawmakers in the House chamber to Russia's invasion of Ukraine as a reason to be confident in the face of a critical moment.

In a speech that focused on the war in Ukraine before pivoting to domestic challenges, Biden said the American people are ready for the task ahead of them in keeping the world united in the face of autocracy.

"Now is the hour, our moment of responsibility. Our test of resolve and conscience, of history itself. It is in this moment that our character is formed. Our purpose is found. Our future is forged," Biden said in closing.

"Well, I know this nation. We will meet the test. To protect freedom and liberty, to expand fairness and opportunity. We will save democracy. As hard as these times have been, I am more optimistic about America today than I have been my whole life."

Speaking to political leaders in Washington, Biden started his State of the Union address by sending a resounding message to the world: The West is united in its response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and condemns the Russian leader for his aggression. Near the beginning of the speech, Biden encouraged all in the chamber to show that support with a resounding standing ovation and said the US and its allies have "an unwavering resolve that freedom will always triumph over tyranny."

Biden noted that Putin's aggression had only made the world's democracies strengthen their resolve to counter rising autocracies.

"Six days ago, Russia's Vladimir Putin sought to shake the foundations of the free world, thinking he could make it bend to his menacing ways. But he badly miscalculated," Biden said. "He thought he could roll into Ukraine and the world would roll over. Instead he met a wall of strength he never imagined. He met the Ukrainian people."

He added, "Let each of us here tonight in this chamber send an unmistakable signal to Ukraine and to the world. Please rise if you are able and show that, yes, we the United States of America stand with the Ukrainian people."

The President also touted the West's unanimity in the face of Russia's aggression, saying their united front is "inflicting pain on Russia and supporting the people of Ukraine" and "choking off Russia's access to technology that will sap its economic strength and weaken its military for years to come."

"Putin's latest attack on Ukraine was premeditated and unprovoked. He rejected repeated, repeated, efforts at diplomacy. He thought the West and NATO wouldn't respond. He thought he could divide us at home, in this chamber and in this nation. Putin was wrong. We were ready," Biden said.

"We spent months building a coalition of other freedom-loving nations from Europe and the Americas to Asia and Africa to confront Putin. I spent countless hours unifying our European allies. We shared with the world in advance what we knew Putin was planning and precisely how he would try to falsely justify his aggression. We countered Russia's lies with truth. And now that he has acted the free world is holding him accountable."

The President celebrated the impact actions will have on "Russian oligarchs and corrupt leaders who have bilked billions of dollars off this violent regime no more."

"We are joining with our European allies to find and seize your yachts, your luxury apartments, your private jets. We are coming for your ill-begotten gains," he said.

He also asserted that "Russia's economy is reeling and Putin alone is to blame."

Putin, for his part, was not expected to watch the speech, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. "The President usually does not watch TV addresses,"

Biden also directly tackled an issue that is perhaps his most troubling on the economic front: inflation. He acknowledge that “Inflation is robbing [people] of the gains they might otherwise feel,” and he went so far as to call it his “top priority.”
All of these point to fears about how Democrats have allowed themselves to be defined ahead of what looks to be an arduous 2022 election. And as with other elements of the speech, it seemed aimed precisely at voters who have sourced on his party.
