The Impossible Suddenly Became Possible
Anne Applebaum:
“As it turns out, nations are not pieces in a game of Risk.
They do not, as some academics have long imagined, have eternal interests or permanent geopolitical orientations, fixed motivations or predictable goals.
Nor do human beings always react the way they are supposed to react.
"Last week, nobody who was analyzing the coming war in Ukraine imagined that the personal bravery of the Ukrainian president and his emotive calls for sovereignty and democracy could alter the calculations
of foreign ministers,
bank directors,
business executives,
and thousands of ordinary people.
"Few imagined that the Russian president’s sinister television appearances and brutal orders could alter, in just a few days, international perceptions of Russia.
“And yet all of that has happened.
Volodymyr Zelensky’s courage has moved people,
even the hard-bitten CEOs of oil companies,
even dull diplomats accustomed to rote pronouncements.
"Vladimir Putin’s paranoid ranting, meanwhile, has frightened even people who were lauding his ‘savvy’ just a few days ago.
He is not, in fact, someone you can do business with, as so many in Berlin, Paris, London, and Washington falsely believed;
he is a cold-blooded dictator happy to murder hundreds of thousands of neighbors and impoverish his nation, if that’s what it takes to remain in power.
"However the war ends
—and many scenarios are still imaginable—
we already live in a world with fewer illusions.”

which took place after Trump used nearly $400 million in military aid to try to extort Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government into coming up with dirt on the Bidens.
"And it’s worth remembering that military aid was desperately needed by Ukraine because the country has been at war with Russia since 2014.”

Most of the world lines up against Moscow, attacks intensify

Most of the world lined up against Moscow in the United Nations on Wednesday to demand it withdraw from Ukraine , as invading Russian forces renewed their bombardment of the country's second-biggest city, menaced its capital and besieged its strategic ports.
Russia reported its military casualties for the first time since the invasion began last week, saying nearly 500 of its troops had been killed and almost 1,600 wounded. Ukraine insisted Russia's losses were far higher but did not immediately disclose its own.
Envoys from Ukraine and Russia are expected to meet Thursday in Belarus for a second round of talks aimed at ending the fighting. But there appeared to be little common ground between the two sides.
The U.N. General Assembly voted to demand that Russia stop its offensive and immediately withdraw all troops, with world powers and tiny island states alike condemning Moscow. The vote was 141 to 5, with 35 abstentions.
Assembly resolutions aren’t legally binding but can have influence as a reflection of international opinion.
The vote came after the 193-member assembly convened its first emergency session since 1997. Countries that spoke up for Russia included Belarus, Cuba, North Korea and Syria.
Meanwhile, Russia pounded Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city with about 1.5 million people, with another round of aerial attacks that shattered buildings and lit up the skyline with balls of fire. At least 21 people were killed and 112 injured over the past day, said Oleg Sinehubov, head of the Kharkiv regional administration.
Several Russian planes were shot down over Kharkiv, according to Oleksiy Arestovich, a top adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“Kharkiv today is the Stalingrad of the 21st century,” Arestovich said, invoking what is considered one of the most heroic moments in Russian history, the five-month defense of the city from the Nazis during World War II.
From his basement bunker, Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov told the BBC: "The city is united and we shall stand fast.’’
Russian attacks, many with missiles, blew the roof off Kharkiv's five-story regional police building and set the top floor on fire, and also hit the intelligence headquarters and a university building, according to officials and videos and photos released by Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. Officials said residential buildings were also hit, but gave no details.

Scott thinks this is fake and again and again and
The Russian army is finding out the hard way that, besides anti-tank missiles, land mines, and Molotov cocktails, one of the greatest threats to tanks is the earth itself, at least when it’s mixed with a little too much water. Even before Russia invaded Ukraine last week, the internet was filled with images of fearsome Russian armor and other vehicles stuck in the mud. As one Marine explained, getting stuck in the mud is not a question of if, but when.
“Tanks and mud are not friends,” said the Marine, who, as a former tank maintainer, patched up tanks and hauled them out of mud and sand until the Marine Corps disbanded its tank units in 2020 and 2021. The Marine spoke on the condition of anonymity since he was not cleared to speak with the press.
“If you have a 40-to-70-ton vehicle where all of its weight is focused on a two-foot wide piece of steel or metal, it’ll just sink when confronted with mud or soft terrain in general,” he explained.
Although the Twitter caption describes the tank as a Russian T-90, other reports have identified the tank as a T-72B3
That “two-foot-wide piece of metal” refers to the tracks that tanks use to move. Another function of those tracks is to spread out the vehicle’s enormous weight as much as possible, but they can’t disperse the tank’s weight enough to keep it from sinking into the soft earth, especially in an eastern European country like Ukraine.
“That’s something I expected for that part of the world,” said the Marine mechanic. “Eastern Europe is either frozen or it’s fucking muddy, that’s just how it is.”

Scott Johnson schizophrenia believes that Russia is winning and that the 40 kilometer long convoy has not walked into a trap!
Images of Russian tanks and other vehicles stuck in the mud seem to complement news that the Russian army’s invasion of Ukraine has been hampered by logistical issues, which has provided opportunities for Ukraine’s fierce resistance to further stymie Russia’s advance. Few things symbolize those problems better than a large, expensive war machine mired in muck. But the issue isn’t new. Mud has hampered warfare for as long as there has been mud and war.
For example, Nazi Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union slowed to a crawl in 1941 in part due to the Rasputitsa, the “quagmire season” which led vehicles to become “hopelessly stuck” after autumn rains transformed dirt roads into rivers of mud, according to the United Kingdom’s Imperial War Museum. But mud plays no favorites and chooses no sides. U.S. Army tanks also became “hopelessly stuck” in mud during the November 1950 Battle of Chosin Reservoir, according to the Army Historical Foundation.
While most tank crews would likely prefer to avoid the mud, sometimes that’s not an option, which is why armor usually travels with support close by.

Mr Trump did not win the 2020 election, but has spent the time since he left office claiming — without evidence — that US President Joe Biden’s victory over him came from fraud rather than garnering a majority of American votes.
Mr Nebenzya was attempting to defend his country’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine during a meeting of the UN General Assembly when he invoked the disgraced ex-American president’s oft-told lie about 2020, referring to the US as a place “where the legitimately elected president of the country was overthrown”.
(and the money that Biden is sending to Russia comes mostly from low-income Americans)

Foriegn Affairs.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s attack on Ukraine has been a clarifying moment. Since he came to power in 2000, various Western leaders have tried to cooperate, accommodate, or negotiate with him. But by embarking on a war of choice against a country he claims doesn’t have a right to exist, Putin has forced the international community to see him for what he is: a belligerent leader with a remarkable capacity for destruction. The result has been sweeping new measures designed to constrict and constrain him—punishing sanctions against Russia’s financial institutions, bans on Russian planes over EU airspace, and increased weapons shipments to Ukraine. Even Germany, long reluctant to confront Putin, agreed to exclude Russian banks from the SWIFT financial messaging system, reversed its long-standing prohibition on providing arms to conflict zones, and substantially increased its military spending. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sparked nothing less than a sea change in international perceptions of Putin and what must be done to confront him.
Such a sea change could well be underway inside Russia, too. Throughout his tenure, Putin has maintained relatively high levels of public support thanks in large part to his ability to restore economic growth and stability after the turmoil of the 1990s. While most Russians have few illusions about their leader, recognizing the corruption that benefits him and the elite around him, it remained all but unfathomable to most Russians that Putin would launch a major conventional war against their Ukrainian neighbors. For months, many Russian analysts, commentators, and citizens alike were convinced that Putin would not engage in such an act of aggression. The news of the war and the economic ramifications that followed have led Russians to see both Putin and Russia differently; Russia is not the same today as it was last week.
The prevailing wisdom holds that Putin will be able to survive any domestic backlash. That is most likely true. In personalist authoritarian regimes—where power is concentrated in the hands of an individual rather than shared by a party, military junta, or royal family—the leader is rarely driven from office by wars, even when they experience defeat. That’s both because other elites are not strong enough to hold the dictator to account and because domestic audiences have few opportunities to punish leaders for their actions. But the thing about repressive regimes like Putin’s Russia is that they often look stable right up to the point that they are not. Putin has taken a major risk in attacking Ukraine, and there is a chance—one that seems to be growing—that it could mark the beginning of his end.
“We’ve sent 475 Million vaccine doses to 112 countries, more than any other nation. And we won’t stop,” he said. “Because you can’t build a wall high enough to keep out…a, a, a, uhh, a vaccine—the vaccine can stop the spread of these diseases.”
- Sloppy Joe
Jen Psaki: Biden "was the vice president the last time Russia invaded Ukraine, this is a pattern"
https://twitter.com/i/status/1499037873961639940
Finally, the conflict in Ukraine may well evolve into a drawn-out insurgency that slowly saps the patience of the Russian public. Research shows that personalist dictators are more willing than other authoritarians to tolerate military disputes with high casualties, but that doesn’t mean their citizens are. In Libya, for example, former leader Muammar al-Qaddafi engaged in heavy-handed repression to maintain control of the country as the costs of his wars increased. But eventually, when faced with dire economic conditions, ordinary citizens violently overthrew his government. In the Soviet Union, a lengthy and expensive invasion of Afghanistan helped drain faith in the Communist Party’s regime. It is not inconceivable that Putin’s grip on Russia will slip if Ukraine becomes a morass.
LOSING TOUCH
Predicting the downfall of an authoritarian leader is a fool’s errand. Weak and embattled autocrats can limp along far longer than analysts expect. Former Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe survived hyperinflation and electoral defeat, staying in power until just two years before his death. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro remains in office, even though Venezuela’s economy has utterly collapsed. Similarly, leaders that appear strong can be suddenly ousted, as happened to former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in 2011 and Tunisian President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali that same year.
But analysts do know that personalist leaders such as Putin are more likely to make foreign policy mistakes than are other autocrats. They surround themselves with yes men who only tell them what they want to hear and withhold bad news, making it difficult for these dictators to make well-informed decisions. Whether or not Putin’s war of choice becomes the mistake that unseats him from power is an open question. But Russia is experiencing rising dissatisfaction from the public, fissures among its elite, and broad-based international punishment. Putin’s downfall may not come tomorrow or the day after, but his grip on power is certainly more tenuous than it was before he invaded Ukraine.
The similarities between Trump and Putin are exactly correct.

Get woke, go broke. Go fuck yourself.:
In March of last year, days after Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed new voting reform legislation, Atlanta-based Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey said, “This legislation is unacceptable. It is a step backwards … and needs to be remedied, and we will continue to advocate for it both in private and now even more in public.”
The massive soft drink company wasn’t alone — it brought a wave of corporate backlash aimed at Kemp, Georgia Republicans, and Republicans in general. Within days, Major League Baseball had pulled the All Star Game out of the state. Delta Airlines, Home Depot, Porsche Cars, and the Atlanta Falcons — all Georgia-based companies — also slammed the law based on false Democratic Party talking points about what it said and did.
And, of course, Coca-Cola also tweeted its displeasure with the law.
One year later, Coca-Cola is eerily silent on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia is one of the company’s most profitable markets, as the soda giant operates out of the country as Swiss-based bottler Coca-Cola HBC. It announced last Tuesday they had contingency plans to cope with the crisis, which included stockpiling ingredients to limit any disruption in their massive Russian market.
Coca-Cola HBC gets approximately 21% of its volume from Russia and Ukraine, where it also has operations. The workers in Ukraine were sent home last week. . . .
They have also not issued any statement condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine at the time of this publication, nor have they tweeted anything that even remarkably resembles criticism of Russia’s actions going all the way back to before Russia crossed into Ukraine several days ago.
Their website has nothing, either. The statement at the top of the page is on climate change.
However, there are plenty of syrupy tweets about their new limited-release soda Starlight on both of their Twitter accounts.
In short, Coca-Cola has no problem taking a whack at the Republican governor for enacting a law they clearly had not read. Still, they cannot take a stand against Russia, whose leader is massacring people in Ukraine.

“The government spent $2.6 million to repair the breaches during the 2019 to 2021 fiscal years… While the agency has acknowledged that smugglers are able to hack through the new barriers built by the Trump administration, the maintenance records show damage has been more widespread than previously known, pointing to the structure’s limitations as an impediment to illegal crossings.

Hours after President Joe Biden laid out what he hopes to salvage from Democrats’ defunct “Build Back Better” social spending plan, Joe Manchin is quickly assembling his counteroffer.
In a Wednesday afternoon interview, the West Virginia centrist laid out a basic party-line package that could win his vote, lower the deficit and enact some new programs, provided they are permanently funded. It may be Democrats’ best and last chance to get at least some of their biggest domestic priorities done before the midterm elections, but would require everyone in the party — particularly liberals — to concede that what’s possible doesn’t come close to the $1.7 trillion package Manchin spurned in December.
Manchin said that if Democrats want to cut a deal on a party-line bill using the budget process to circumvent a Republican filibuster, they need to start with prescription drug savings and tax reform. He envisions whatever revenue they can wring out of that as split evenly between reducing the federal deficit and inflation, on the one hand, and enacting new climate and social programs, on the other — “to the point where it’s sustainable.”
“If you do that, the revenue producing [measures] would be taxes and drugs. The spending is going to be climate,” Manchin said.

How well do face masks protect against COVID-19?
Get answers to your questions about face masks, including how to use them properly.
By Mayo Clinic Staff
Can face masks help slow the spread of the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)? Yes. Face masks combined with other preventive measures, such as getting vaccinated, frequent hand-washing and physical distancing, can help slow the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends masks for the general public. If you're in an area with a high number of people with COVID-19 in the hospital and new COVID-19 cases, the CDC recommends wearing a well-fitted mask indoors in public, whether or not you're vaccinated.
The CDC says that you should wear the most protective mask possible that you'll wear regularly, fits well and is comfortable. Respirators such as nonsurgical N95s give the most protection. KN95s and medical masks provide the next highest level of protection. Cloth masks provide less protection. The CDC says that surgical N95 masks should be reserved for health care providers.
If you have a weakened immune system or have a higher risk of serious illness, wear a mask that provides you with the most protection possible when you're in an area with a high number of people with COVID-19 in the hospital and new COVID-19 cases. Check with your healthcare provider to see if you should wear a mask when you're in an area with a lower number of new COVID-19 cases and people with COVID-19 in the hospital.
We told them.
"Especially now that the science shows that masking was wrong?"
My US Army NBC MOS gave me the education and training to know the masks were a cruel joke.
More important, Ch, was the unusual amount of childish pique DeSantis showed toward those students (see video).
Not exactly very presidential.
Does that matter to you at all?
Joe Manchin is quickly assembling his counteroffer.
Joe Manchin sat with the Republicans last night for a reason alky.
Biden Build A Bear Better.
Hope he gets serious some time soon as 10% inflation grips his economy.
I grieve about this.
Russia Captures First Key Ukraine City
“Russian forces captured the strategically important hub of Kherson, making it the first major city to be overcome by President Vladimir Putin’s forces since the invasion began last Thursday,” the New York Times reports.
“The fall of Kherson — a city of 300,000 people, northwest of the Crimean peninsula — is strategically significant because it would allow the Russians to control more of Ukraine’s southern coastline and to push west toward the city of Odessa.”
NATO Countries Pour Weapons Into Ukraine
Approximately 20 different countries “are funneling arms into Ukraine,” the New York Times reports.
“But whether European weaponry will continue to reach the Ukrainian battlefield in time to make a difference is far from certain.”
And I grieve about that too.

A demonstrable LIE.
Getting vaccinated DOES NOT help slow the spread.
So with this as your predicate, the rest of it can be categorized as bullshit. Especially masks.
And especially now that the political science has overcome the science science.
It has all always been bullshit.
Biden's oil $112 A barrels.
Winning for Putin.
The End of masking was on full display last night at "The State of the Nation " speech.
Thanks
Scott do you believe that The Mayo Clinic is a Democratic hoax???
Nope. Do you believe that studies done by John Hopkins and others showing statistical proof that places where mask mandates were in place were no better off than places where they were worn... are a hoax?
Do you believe it's a "hoax" that these same masks we use had a disclaimer (prior to Covid) that they were not designed to stop the spread of infectious viruses?
Do you believe it's a "hoax" that the CDC and others are now recommending KN95 and N95 masks rather than paper or cloth masks?
Do you believe it's a hoax that the CDC and almost every entity in the country is lifting recommendations of and the actual mask mandates?
I believe in the empirical statistical evidence of mask wearing, Reverend. Doctors can toss around their explicit or implicit support for them (and other measures) all they want.
But that doesn't change the numbers, Reverend.
But of course... empirical mathematical evidence is probably a "hoax" in your mind if bumps up against your personal politics.
Heck, even here in Seattle (where people drive around alone with masks on) - the state and county are lifting their mask mandates...
But apparently... they just fell for that "hoax" that we don't need them.
Right?
CHT. Where did James go?
Ukrainian cities and people are being threatened.
I don't give a damn about what you want to say about masking or not masking.
But right now, Omicron is RAGING in Hong Kong with MASSIVE rises in daily cases and deaths.

Combing the internet for a Cut and Paste rebuttal no doubt.
Yep.
Want to tell them not to mask?
I don't really care to offer them any advice, Reverend.
Ukrainian cities and people are being threatened.
And yet, here you are... attacking DeSantis for being right about something completely irrelevant.
Don't you feel stupid.
Want to tell them not to mask?
I'd like to tell them they're free to mask... or not.

DeSantis did more than offer those students advice.

I am apparently far more concerned about Uktaine than you are. But I am not rootin' for Pootin.
I just saw a headline that 870,000 people have now fled Ukraine.
How tragic.

Putin’s War Unites Eastern Europe in Alarm
New York Times:
“Now Eastern European countries fear a catastrophe of their own could be in the making, as Mr. Putin seeks to turn back the clock and reclaim Russia’s lost sphere of influence, perilously close to their frontiers. Even leaders in the region who have long supported Mr. Putin are sounding the alarm.
“Warnings about Moscow’s intentions, often dismissed until last Thursday’s invasion of Ukraine as ‘Russophobia’ by those without experience of living in proximity to Russia, are now widely accepted as prescient.”

Well could be.
But in this year Roger is going to buy a $500 k home @ Bonney Lake , Washington, get a new A8 and get married.

‘Astonishing how screwed up’ Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is going: Retired general
Bob Brigham
March 02, 2022
Retired four-star Army Gen. Barry McCaffrey on Wednesday offered his analysis of Vladimir Putin's military situation in Ukraine.
MSNBC's Hallie Jackson interviewed McCaffrey following an update on the invasion from Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby.
"I think one thing we ought to say is the Russian military operations in Ukraine are balled up," McCaffrey said. "I mean, just using the word convoy, this is the movement to contact in combat of armored units and they're parked bumper-to-bumper three lanes across. I don't see how they can unravel it. At the head of that narrow column are Ukrainians fighting for their lives."

"So the Russians have a real problem and may also be a logistics problem. I don't see how they get by the stalled units," he explained. "It's very surprising to me."
"It is astonishing how screwed up they are on this," he said.
