The gaffe fallout continues

Is that a threat? It sounds like a threat.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that a remark made by President Joe Biden over the weekend about Vladimir Putin, in which Biden said "for God's sake, this man cannot remain in power," is a "statement that is certainly alarming," Reuters reports. "We will continue to track the statements of the U.S. president in the most attentive way," Peskov said.

So what exactly is the point of "doing nothing" that might rattle the cages of the Russians, while being bound and determined to say stuff that will rattle the cages with the Russians? At least if you were doing something tangible, you would be helping Ukraine. which last time I checked it the point to all of this?

But by just mouthing off, you still rattling the cages without actually providing any assistance at all for Ukraine. In fact, such rhetoric (without anything standing behind it) is likely pretty harmful to the entire affair for a variety of reasons, most of them quite obvious.

Like it or not, Russia does have the largest or second largest stockpile of nuclear weapons (depending on your definition of arsenal) at it's disposal and there are people who believe that Putin thinks he can win that sort of a war.

You are not going to trigger nuclear war by just pushing Russia down a few pegs in Ukraine. There are plenty of ways to allow Putin an out to save face and keep himself legitimate if it comes to that. But the one thing Putin will not do is go quietly into the night because foreign leaders are requesting him to. Putin may just be crazy enough to go scorched earth before he ever allows  himself to be taken out of power.

Most of the reaction on Sunday did not seem to significantly undermine the administration’s relationship with allies that have joined in issuing sanctions against Russia.

Mr. Biden had used words “that must make Putin clearly understand that he has to stop,” Italy’s foreign minister, Luigi Di Maio, said on Saturday night. Mr. Biden made “a very clear speech, he used resolute words,” Mr. Di Maio said. “But let’s remember that on the other side, Putin uses bombs.”

Nadhim Zahawi, Britain’s education secretary, echoed the White House’s clarification, saying he was sure that both the United States and Britain agreed that the Russian people should decide how they wished to be governed.

“The Russian people will decide the fate of Putin and his cronies,” Mr. Zahawi said.

And Julianne Smith, the U.S. ambassador to NATO, suggested that Mr. Biden’s declaration was a reaction to the human cost of war he had witnessed during the three-day diplomatic trip to Europe. Noting that Mr. Biden had visited refugees before his speech in Warsaw, she said his remarks were “a principled human reaction.”

But, she insisted on “State of the Union,” “the U.S. does not have a policy of regime change in Russia. Full stop.”

“We do not have a strategy of regime change in Russia or anywhere else, for that matter,” Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said in Jerusalem after meeting with Israel’s foreign minister, Yair Lapid. “In this case, as in any case, it’s up to the people of the country in question. It’s up to the Russian people.”

Michal Baranowski, a senior fellow and director of the Warsaw office of the German Marshall Fund who attended Mr. Biden’s speech, acknowledged that the president’s comment could be perceived as “a call for regime change.” But he said it was unlikely to lead to further escalation with Russia.

'I'm glad he's not president now': Trump's base splinters over

Donald Trump's base has split over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Trump has blamed President Joe Biden for the invasion, although he has finally pulled back from praising Putin, and his backers are torn over U.S. involvement.

"We kind of forced the hand of Russia to do it, so, I mean, we have no choice but to protect them now," said Trump backer Andrew Johnson, 33. "How are you going to pursue something and then leave them out to dry? They're human, too, regardless of whether they're American or not."

Alina Robert, a Trump supporter who was born in Latvia, told NBC News she believes the U.S. military must remove Putin from power.

“I love America, love our troops, but I think we need to send them there,” said Roberts, 22. “If we don’t really fight him — as an individual, if you know what I mean — it’s never going to end until he gets what he wants in its entirety.”

But others were conflicted over sending even military aid to Ukraine.

"We should sit back and let them see what they can do on their own," said Trump voter Chad Gailey. "That's our dollars, not theirs. That's too much — dropping tanks and guns and things like that. I'm not against helping them, but, at the same time, that's not our fight."

"Putin as a person, honestly, I think he is a strong president, much like Trump," Gailey added. "We can’t be sending billions of dollars when we need it here."

At least one Trump supporter expressed relief that he wasn't president anymore, even as she criticized Biden's handling of the situation.

"I’m glad he’s not president now," said Trump voter Brenda Watkins, 77, who did not attend the rally. "I’m terribly discouraged and disturbed about what’s going on in the world. I don’t think President Biden is handling it well, but I don’t know if I’d feel comfortable if President Trump were in there, either. I hate to say that."

Any how we can disagree without insulting

Germany: G7 rejects Russia's demand to pay for gas in rubles
Associated Press - 3h ago

BERLIN (AP) — The Group of Seven major economies have agreed to reject Moscow’s demand to pay for Russian natural gas exports in rubles, the German energy minister said Monday.

Robert Habeck told reporters that “all G-7 ministers agreed completely that this (would be) a one-sided and clear breach of the existing contracts” for natural gas, which is used to heat homes, generate electricity and power industry.

He said officials from France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada met Friday to coordinate natural and that European Union representatives also were present.

Habeck said that “payment in ruble is not acceptable and we will urge the companies affected not to follow (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s demand.”

Putin announced last week that Russia will demand “unfriendly" countries pay for natural gas only in Russian currency from now on, instructing the central bank to work out a procedure for buyers to acquire rubles in Russia. The demand sent already high gas prices even higher amid fears it could be a prelude to a natural gas shutoff, which could disrupt Europe's economy and hurt Russia's finances.

Economists said the move appeared designed to try to support the ruble, which has collapsed against other currencies since Putin invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24 and Western countries responded with far-reaching sanctions against Moscow. But some analysts expressed doubt that it would work.

By Francis P. Sempa

Former Vice President Mike Pence, channeling his Harry Truman, told Fox News that “We need an Berlin Airlift for the 21st century” that would “marshal the resources of the free world to make sure the beleaguered people of Ukraine suffering under this invasion have the food and the water, and the medicine they need to prevail.” He also called for the transfer of MiG fighter jets in Poland to Ukraine. This is how regional wars escalate into world wars. And, contrary to Pence’s attempt at headline-grabbing, Ukraine today is not West Berlin of 1948.

“A federal judge ruled Monday that former President Donald Trump ‘more likely than not’ attempted to illegally obstruct Congress when he tried to subvert the 2020 election on Jan. 6, 2021,” Politico reports.

Said U.S. District Court Judge David Carter, in an opinion: “Based on the evidence, the Court finds it more likely than not that President Trump corruptly attempted to obstruct the Joint Session of Congress on January 6, 2021.”

He added: “It was a coup in search of a legal theory.”

More: “Trump’s plan had worked, it would have permanently ended the peaceful transition of power, undermining American democracy and the Constitution.”

More importantly than it

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — With its aspirations for a quick victory dashed by a stiff Ukrainian resistance, Russia has increasingly focused on grinding down Ukraine’s military in the east in the hope of forcing Kyiv into surrendering part of the country’s territory to possibly end the war.

The bulk of the Ukrainian army is concentrated in eastern Ukraine, where it has been locked up in fighting with Moscow-backed separatists in a nearly eight-year conflict. If Russia succeeds in encircling and destroying the Ukrainian forces in the country’s industrial heartland, called Donbas, it could try to dictate its terms to Kyiv and potentially attempt to split the country in two.

The Russian military declared Friday that the “first stage of the operation” had been largely accomplished, allowing Russian troops to concentrate on their “top goal — the liberation of Donbas.”

Many observers say the shift in strategy could reflect President Vladimir Putin’s acknowledgment that his plan for a blitz in Ukraine has failed, forcing him to narrow his goals and change tactics amid a disastrous war that has turned Russia into a pariah and decimated its economy.

Despite the nine words he has United NATO and hundreds more nations.

Oof is not a game changer

As we covered in great detail over the weekend, nine words at the end of President Biden’s speech in Poland sent the foreign policy establishment into a tizzy.

Said Biden, about Russian president Vladimir Putin: “For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power.”

Even though Biden’s remark was not in the prepared text of his speech, the White House could have let the comment stand. It was a strong statement about a brutal dictator ruthlessly bombing innocent civilians in another country. It had the added credibility of being true. And there are no “take backs” in war.

Instead, the White House chose to assure the world that Biden didn’t mean the United States backed “regime change” in Russia.

It’s true that Biden’s comments threatened to escalate tensions with Russia. It’s also true that many European allies are upset with Biden because he may have unnerved Putin.

But the clumsy walk back made Biden look weak, undisciplined, and to some, even confused. And it also overshadowed what might otherwise have been an historic speech.

As Charlie Sykes notes: “So the choice was: Rattle Putin or discredit and weaken the President of the United States. And we know what they chose. Oof.”

WASHINGTON — A federal judge ruled on Monday that former President Donald J. Trump and a lawyer who advised him on how to overturn the 2020 election most likely committed felonies, including obstructing the work of Congress and conspiring to defraud the United States.

The judge’s comments marked a significant breakthrough for the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, which had laid out in a civil filing the crimes it believed Mr. Trump might have committed as it weighs making a criminal referral to the Justice Department.

“The illegality of the plan was obvious,” wrote Judge David O. Carter of the Central District of California. “Our nation was founded on the peaceful transition of power, epitomized by George Washington laying down his sword to make way for democratic elections. Ignoring this history, President Trump vigorously campaigned for the vice president to single-handedly determine the results of the 2020 election.”

The Justice Department has been conducting a wide-ranging investigation of the Capitol assault but has given no public indication that it is considering pursuing a criminal case against Mr. Trump. A criminal referral from the House committee could increase pressure on Attorney General Merrick B. Garland to do so.

Judge Carter’s comments came in an order for John Eastman, a conservative lawyer who wrote a memo that members of both parties have likened to a blueprint for a coup, to turn over more than 100 emails to the committee as it investigates Mr. Trump’s efforts to hold onto power after his election loss.

Many of the documents the committee will now receive relate to a legal strategy proposed by Mr. Eastman to pressure Vice President Mike Pence not to certify electors from several key swing states when Congress convened on Jan. 6, 2021. “The true animating force behind these emails was advancing a political strategy: to persuade Vice President Pence to take unilateral action on January 6,” Judge Carter wrote.

Mr. Eastman had filed suit against the panel, trying to persuade a judge to block the committee’s subpoena for documents in his possession. As part of the suit, Mr. Eastman sought to shield from release documents he said were covered by attorney-client privilege.

In response, the committee argued — under the legal theory known as the crime-fraud exception — that the privilege did not cover information conveyed from a client to a lawyer if it was part of furthering or concealing a crime.

Senator Jim Risch of Idaho, the top Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, said Mr. Biden made a “horrendous gaffe” in an otherwise good speech.

“The administration has done everything they can to stop escalating — there’s not a whole lot more you can do to escalate than to call for a regime change,” he told CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Representative Michael McCaul of Texas, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, suggested the impromptu comment threatened to overshadow the discussions over how to continue to assist Ukraine in its fight against Russia.

President Joe Biden’s approval rating on the economy has reached a record-low, in a brand new poll out Sunday morning.

According to the latest survey from NBC News, only 33 percent of Americans approve of the president’s handling of the economy, compared with 60 percent who disapprove. That number represents a seismic shift from a year ago, when 52 percent approved of Biden on the economy, and just 43 percent disapproved.

Ukrainian officials also played down the chances of a major breakthrough at the talks, due to be held in Istanbul after Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan spoke to Russia's Vladimir Putin on Sunday.

But the fact that they were taking place in person at all - for the first time since an acrimonious meeting between foreign ministers on March 10 - was a sign of shifts behind the scenes as Russia's invasion has stalled and sanctions have hit home.

Approval ratings are irrelevant

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

This apparent call for regime change in Moscow, was, we were instantly told, nothing of the sort. “The president’s point was that Putin cannot be allowed to exercise power over his neighbors or the region,” according to an unnamed White House official. “He was not discussing Putin’s power in Russia, or regime change.”

We can’t go on like this. Credibility is essential to the effective and safe conduct of national security. No amount of hasty cleanup will erase the words that come from the lips of a commander in chief. And no, it is not a defense of the president to note—accurately—that his immediate predecessor was as notorious for his verbal indiscipline as Mr. Biden is.

For now, we have an immediate and escalating problem with this presidency. We can certainly hope that Russians understand as well as we do that, at 79, Mr. Biden is prone to saying things he doesn’t mean. But we can’t be sure. What we can be sure of is that Mr. Putin, who has already whipped up his compatriots into a frenzy of paranoia about the “real” intentions of the U.S. in arming Ukraine—to wit, an attempt to weaken and destroy Russia itself—will seize on every piece of evidence he can find to bolster his case.

Diplomacy is a subtle activity that combines artful deception with necessary candor. States convey to each other only what they want or need to convey; they willfully mislead each other about some aspects of their objectives and capabilities while drawing bright red lines around their nonnegotiable truths. Strategic ambiguity helps induce in allies and adversaries alike a distinct uncertainty about intentions. But clarity is essential when the stakes are existential. Decoding these complex messages, sifting the signal from the noise, is the essence of successful statecraft.

Mr. Biden’s penchant for reckless language simply bludgeons through this delicate diplomatic infrastructure. It compromises the ability of the U.S. and its allies to achieve our objectives, while significantly increasing the risk of a miscalculation on either side.

John F. Kennedy said that during World War II, Winston Churchill “mobilized the English language and sent it into battle.” Mr. Biden seems intent on doing the same—only he may be sending it into battle on the wrong side.

Wsj basically said that the 25th amendment should be done.

If this article is repeated by most of the media, he might be removed from office.

"I’m not walking anything back," Biden said Monday in his most extensive comments to date since his speech in Warsaw on Saturday.

ADVERTISING

"The fact of the matter is I was expressing the moral outrage I felt toward the way Putin is dealing and the actions of this man," Biden continued, noting he had just met with Ukrainian refugees before giving his speech in Poland.

"But I want to make it clear: I wasn’t then nor am I now articulating a policy change," Biden said. "I was expressing moral outrage that I feel, and I make no apologies for it."

Biden said he does not believe his comments complicate relations with Russia, nor does he think it risks further escalating Russian attacks on Ukraine.

Jeepers Roger..

I get that you are paying journalist to provide you with your opinions, but perhaps you should find smarter ones.

It's not illegal to object to a Presidential election. Senators have done it every election going back as far as 2000 when several objected to Bush's win over Gore. None of them have been arrested for casting a dissenting vote.

It's also not illegal for a state legislature to decertify an election over fraud or other issues. The constitution and court decisions have suggested as such.

The only thing that "could" be considered corrupt or illegal would be if it was done in a fraudulent manner and it would require someone to "prove" that Trump and others did not actually believe he was the legitimate winner.

Trust me on this one Roger...

The DOJ cannot bring any of these charges because the defense would be simple. Trump and whatever defendants would argue that they believed that the election results were fraudulent or incorrect in several states.

They would then have a complete and total forum to show all of the alleged fraud and problems. These arguments would not be able to be spun by the media or ignored. The audits in several states would become evidence and would have to be taken seriously. Members of local county election boards could be called in under oath to answer questions.

It would be a fucking nightmare!

I mean seriously Roger... there have been court cases since the election that have exposed serious problems in at least five states, where Judges had to issue rulings that will barr the same practices from taking place again.

Are you really that "gaslighted" to believe that this was "the most secure election evah" - I are you that naive?

Mr. Garland testified before Congress in October that the department was not limiting its investigation to just low-level rioters as it examines the Jan. 6 attack. Even so, he said he could not comment further on what next steps the agency would take.

“I’m very limited as to what I can say,” Mr. Garland said. “The investigation is being conducted by the prosecutors in the U.S. attorney’s office and by the F.B.I. field office. We have not constrained them in any way.”

You think it is a "lie" to suggest that Trump legitimately believes he won the 2020 election? Because I believe, 100% unequivalently, that Donald Trump believed that he won that election and it was taken from him due to fraud committed at the voting and counting levels.

It doesn't matter what you or I believe, Reverend.

It only matters what the former President believes.

To convict him of some form of fraud you cannot just show that he wanted to overturn the election using constitutionally legitimate means. You have to prove that he KNEW his claims were baseless and that he was literally trying to "steal" the election using those constitutionally legitimate means.

You would probably also have to show that he bribed people or that he threatened people or that he engaged in criminal behavior outside of the vague concept that he was committing some form of treason.

and for the record, Reverend.

The math has not changed.

It will not change next year, the year after, or ever. The issues I have with the election have nothing to do with conspiracy theories or anything having to do with Donald Trump.

My issue was with the statistics. It wasn't just my statistics either. You had 538s and the NYT needles being 3% or more "off" several hours after counting began. Those sorts of numbers do not change that much (or never have prior and probably never will again). Maybe Silver can bury his head in the sand and just believe he got hoaxed by it all. We were all just wrong (thank god) and our belief that this was 2016 all over again, was luckily avoided by crazy statistical anomalies that for sure do not represent anything unusual. Btw... all of this is easily shown if you understand the statistics of these formulas and algorithms involved.

But you don't so you won't understand it. All you hear is what the My Pillow guy or Donald Trump says. I don't believe you have ever seriously listened to the statistical aspects of things.

The Walt Disney Company said that it would help repeal Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill on Monday ― the same day that the state’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, signed the bill into law.

In a statement posted on its social media platforms, Disney condemned the controversial legislation, which is formally known as the Parental Rights in Education bill.

“Our goal as a company is for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts, and we remain committed to supporting the national and state organizations working to achieve that,” the statement read. “We are dedicated to standing up for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ members of the Disney family, as well as the LGBTQ+ community in Florida and across the country.”

One of Florida’s largest employers, Disney has faced a barrage of criticism in recent weeks after CEO Bob Chapek announced that the company would stay neutral on the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which largely forbids instruction on sexuality and gender identity in most elementary school classrooms. He also confirmed that Disney had made financial contributions to both Democratic and Republican lawmakers who “have subsequently taken positions on both sides of the legislation.”

I am curious why we pretend that he represents us in the international stage when he doesn't actually "represent" our positions. We would probably find a simple spokesperson to provide our real policies in these sorts of important international forums.

But there is no evidence to suggest anything other than Trump thought he should have won if not for fraud and such. And it makes ZERO difference if he can prove it or if you believe him. All he has to do is be convinced that "he" believes it.

The right-wing media outlet Newsmax, which amplified former President Donald Trump's false allegations of election rigging and widespread voter fraud, said on Friday there is no evidence that Dominion Voting Systems and one of its top employees, Eric Coomer, manipulated election results in 2020.

"Newsmax subsequently found no evidence that such allegations were true. Many of the states whose results were contested by the Trump campaign after the November 2020 election have conducted extensive recounts and audits, and each of these states certified the results as legal and final," the company said in a statement published online that will also be broadcast.

Arizona audit found tens of thousands of ballots that were probably illegally counted.

Georgia has at least one county that will no longer be allowed to count their own ballots (will need a neutral party to come in and handle the ballot counting) and they have multiple open criminal investigations including a pay for vote ballot harvesting scheme.

CBS News’ Robert Costa Tuesday morning announced, “Woodward and I have the docs,” referring to the White House call logs and Donald Trump’s Presidential “Daily Diary” for January 6, 2020, the infamous day of the insurrection and the attack on the U.S. Capitol and American democracy.

Costa, formerly of The Washington Post, and Woodward, currently with The Post, have been working together. Costa published links to the White House call logs and the Presidential “Daily Diary”:

They reveal a president who was in a flurry of phone calls from 8:23 AM to 11:06 AM – and then a mysterious seven-hour gap, until 6:54 PM.

The logs and diary could pose serious problems for Donald Trump, the former president, and his top aides and allies, as the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack puts together a detailed timeline of everything that happened on that day.

For example, Congressman Jim Jordan infamously told a reporter he couldn’t remember when he talked to the president on January 6, even if it was before or after the insurrection. He talked to Trump for ten minutes, from 9:24 AM to 9:34 AM – before the attack on the

Costa points to Steve Bannon:

Trump then told the White House operator to call Senator Josh Hawley, whose fist pump has become an iconic symbol of the insurrection. And then he talked with Rudy Giuliani for six minutes. Stephen Miller for 26 minutes, and on and on.

And CBS’ Steven Portnoy notes House Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s widely-reported call with Trump is not in the log:

Trump’s last call before the massive gap was to Senator David Perdue (R-GA), who is now running for governor of Georgia.

Also noteworthy is at 7:16 PM, after the attack on the Capitol, the White House operator told the president there were “pending calls” from Sen. Hawley, and attorney Cleta Mitchell who was on Trump’s possibly unlawful call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.
