April 15 (Reuters) - Russia has confirmed the Moskva missile cruiser, the flagship of its Black Sea Fleet, has sunk while being towed to port following what it said was a fire and explosions involving ammunition stowed onboard.

Ukraine says the Moskva's fate was sealed by a missile strike launched by its forces from the coast which ripped open the hulking Soviet-era ship's hull. Russia's defence ministry has not confirmed that version of events. Reuters is unable to verify either side's assertions.

Report ad

Here's what we do know, and what the sinking means (and does not mean) for Russia's battle-readiness:

WHAT CAPABILITIES DOES THE SINKING DEPRIVE RUSSIA OF?

Russia has powerful air defence systems deployed in Crimea, which it seized from Ukraine in 2014, but the Moskva was able to provide long-range and mobile air defence protection for the entire Black Sea Fleet and was a floating command and control centre. Its loss degrades the fleet's air defences, particularly on longer range missions.

Report ad

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CREW?

The ship had a crew of around 500 sailors who Russia said were successfully evacuated to other ships before being returned to their home port of Sevastopol in Crimea on Friday. Ukraine has suggested there are likely to have been fatalities, but Russia has not said anything on the subject yet.

WILL IT LOSS CHANGE THE COURSE OF THE UKRAINE CONFLICT?

Unlikely to, but Britain's Ministry of Defence says its loss is likely to prompt Russia to review its naval posture in the Black Sea. U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that while the sinking would have a symbolic impact and potentially raise questions about Russia's longer-term naval capabilities, it would be unlikely to have a major impact on the course of the conflict. The Russian navy has so far not played a big role.

Report ad

One U.S. official said that Russia had only used its warships in a limited fashion, to carry out occasional strikes and resupply troops in the south. Russia retains naval dominance in the immediate region and the Moskva was equipped to destroy enemy vessels at sea but little is left of Ukraine's navy.

I know it's off topic but

A Recession Would Only Deepen Democratic Woes

April 14, 2022

Charlie Cook

 @CharlieCookDC

As awful as the last 15 months have been for Democrats since they completed the electoral trifecta of winning control of the White House, the House, and the Senate, there is a strong chance that things get a lot worse. Last summer it was Afghanistan that began to weigh down President Biden’s previously satisfactory job-approval ratings. Then inflation began to take its toll on his numbers. Now an even more dreaded "R" word (recession) looks like more and more of a threat.

Harvard economist and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers has more than his share of detractors, but let’s face it: He began warning about inflation more than a year ago, and has proven to be right when the overwhelming majority of economists, particularly those in the Biden administration and at the Fed, were dead wrong. Sunday, on NBC’s Meet the Press with Chuck Todd,” Summers said, “The painful fact, though, is that historically when we've had inflation above 4 percent and we've had unemployment below 4 percent, essentially always, since World War II, that's been followed by a recession within the next two years."

Last week this column pointed to an analysis by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco showing that U.S. inflation is much higher than similar Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries because, quite simply, we overheated the economy with too much stimulus.

Simply put, the treatment for rampant inflation is to jack up interest rates in order to slow down and cool off the economy, and that all too often triggers a recession. On Friday, in his weekly segment on Bloomberg Television’s Wall Street Week, Summers told host David Westin that he thought the chances of a recession in the next two years was over 2 in 3. Compare that to a Bloomberg News survey of 72 economists a few days earlier, which had 27.5 percent predicting a recession in the next 12 months, up from 15 percent in February and 20 percent in March.

In terms of politics, what’s worse than a train wreck!

Unfortunately we are in danger 😢.

Because Trump is still in charge.

GOP leadership fears Trump wing will 'burn the House down' after midterms

Tom Boggioni

April 15, 2022

According to a report from Politico's Sarah Ferris and Olivia Beavers, moderate House Republicans are simultaneously excited at the prospect of reclaiming the House for Democratic majority control in November's midterm election and also fearful that far-right members will set about creating chaos instead of governing.

With multiple moderate GOP lawmakers retiring this year -- in many cases being driven out after attacks by former president Donald Trump -- members of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's inner circle see allies leaving who were more interested in passing legislation and not just fighting culture wars and making headlines.

As Politico's report states, Michigan Rep Fred Upton's announcement that he won't seek re-election was "the latest in a series of blows to the House’s small but mighty group of GOP dealmakers, a loose bloc of lawmakers who — despite a party shifting rightward — still favor compromise over obstinacy," adding, "They will prove critical to Republican leaders’ ability to run the chamber next year should they win back the House as expected, regardless of the margin of that victory."

Noting, "The Republican leadership team will be dealing with a conference that’s clearly gotten more populist and, well, Trumpian over the four years since the party last controlled the House,"

_____

They may try to impeach Biden in revenge.

Plus it's very likely that the economy seems have gotten past inflation and if unemployment rate are at record lows, the middle class will prevail.

I don't think that Biden will run again. And if Trump is not in jail then the Democratic have a greater chance than before.

This conclusion can only be drawn by people with no connection to the economy.

People like prison inmates. Or nursing home & insane asylum inmates.

Normal folks understand that we are nowhere near "having gotten past inflation." Not even close. And on the heels of this "worse in 40 years inflation" is the impending recession that follows. When the Fed finally gets around to raising interest rates the economy stops dead in it's tracks, and with the cost of borrowing going way up, layoffs will ensue.

Count on it.

It's the perfect karma for a drooling idiot dementia patient who stole an election. It just sucks that WE have to pay for it while Dumb Fuck Joe remains insulated from it and oblivious to it.

A new story about a Republican Senator reveals that he refused to overthrow the election, even though he was involved.

Newly released text messages between Sen. Mike Lee and former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows show Lee was advising and assisting former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The messages also reveal Lee was aware of a legally dubious strategy to have then-Vice President Mike Pence throw out Electoral College votes much earlier than he had claimed.

CNN published almost 100 text messages from Lee and Texas Rep. Chip Roy to Meadows in the aftermath of Trump’s 2020 election loss. The texts trace how Lee went from being a fierce advocate for Trump’s efforts to warning the White House that the scheme could backfire.

Lee’s efforts to assist Trump began Nov. 7, the day Democrat Joe Biden was declared the winner. He texted Meadows a statement signed by the leaders of several prominent conservative groups urging Trump to “exhaust every legal and constitutional remedy” in challenging the results.

“Use it however you deem appropriate,” Lee wrote. “And if it’s helpful to you for you to leak it, feel free to do so.”

Lee also pressed Meadows to help lawyer Sydney Powell gain access to Trump. Powell alleged a secret cabal, including George Soros, the late Hugo Chávez, the CIA and thousands of election officials, conspired to steal votes from Trump in 2020.

“Sydney Powell is saying she needs to get in to see the president, but she’s being kept away from him. Apparently she has a strategy to keep things alive and put several states back in play. Can you help her get in?” Lee wrote to Meadows on Nov. 7.

Two days later, Lee again reached out to Meadows on behalf of Powell.

“Sidney (sic) told us the campaign lawyer who do not know are not focused on this and are obstructing progress. I have no way of verifying or refuting that on my own, but I’ve found her to be a straight shooter,” Lee wrote.

Powell’s conspiracy claims resulted in her being sued for defamation by Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic. Powell is facing multiple disciplinary actions, including disbarment, in several states for her actions following the 2020 election.

On Nov. 19, Lee realizes his backing of Powell may have been a mistake following a disastrous news conference where she detailed bizarre claims about a global communist plot to rig the election against Trump.

The Wall Street believes that The Jimmy Carter collapse is not going to happen again.

The tight labor market in the late 1960s came near the end of a nearly decadelong economic expansion. The current labor market developed just two years after an extremely deep recession.

The share of the national income that goes to wages has dropped 7.3% since the fourth quarter of 1968.PHOTO: RON HOLMAN / VISALIA TIMES-DELTA/REUTERS

Caroline Fohlin, an economic historian at Emory University, said the pandemic-induced shock is more similar to a war than a financial crisis.

Wartime economic shocks tend to sharply reduce the supply of workers and available goods, she said, since so many people and resources are devoted to the war effort. Between 1914 and 1918, during World War I, the unemployment rate fell to 1.4% from 7.9%, according to research by Hugh Rockoff, an economist at Rutgers University.

In this case, it wasn’t war that kept workers out of the labor force but disease or fear of infections, Ms. Fohlin said.

“Most of our recessions have some kind of financial element but some of them, less often, are like this—more like a war shock,” she said.

Still, it can be misleading to compare unemployment claims numbers between 1968 and today, said Ms. Groshen. That is partly because workers today are less likely to claim unemployment benefits when they lose their jobs than in the past. In some cases, people now turn to informal working arrangements or gig work when they lose a job, rather than file for unemployment benefits, she said.

“The proportion of people who lost their jobs who receive unemployment insurance has been on a long-term decline,” she said. The trend was disrupted by the pandemic, when enhanced and expanded benefits enticed more to apply, but those programs have ended. “It looks like maybe we’re getting back to that trend again.”

If Trump had done that sort of stuff, the 25th amendment would have been the ONLY topic of liberal discussion.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

But the CNN might not matter...

But this past week there occurred a new development, which could be Trump’s smoking gun. CNN broke the story that two days after the 2020 presidential election, as votes were still being tallied, and two days before the  media had called the election for Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Jr. texted then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, whom Congress has cited for criminal contempt, telling Meadows “we have operational control” to ensure Trump would have a second term. Trump Jr. laid out the strategy followed by Trump’s inner circle in the following months: file lawsuits, advocate recounts to prevent battleground states from certifying their electors, have a number of Republican state houses put forward slates of fake “Trump electors,” and if all else failed, throw the election into the House of Representatives where Trump could expect to win the majority as votes are counted by state delegations.

The text establishes at a minimum that Trump Jr. was in on the planning (of which Trump was doubtless aware) to subvert the choice of the voters in key states and replace them with either phony Trump electors or the electors put forward by Republican legislatures or else kick things over to the House of Representatives where Trump would certainly win 28 states to 22.

Subsequently, John Eastman, a lawyer on the right, proposed a six-step variation on the theme. Eastman elaborated a series of moves whereby Vice President Mike Pence might overturn the election. Judge Carter said that this put Trump and Eastman in the center of a criminal conspiracy to overturn the election.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Prosecutors never feel they have enough evidence to prove even a good case. Nevertheless, the New York Times reported that the January 6 panel believes it has enough evidence for a criminal referral to the Department of Justice alleging that Trump was involved in a conspiracy to defraud the United States, as well as other federal crimes, including obstruction of an official proceeding.

The panel, however, is said to be split over whether to make the referral for fear that it may politicize any eventual prosecution. A criminal reference would not bind Attorney General Garland, but it would ratchet up the political pressure to indict Trump, already reaching fever pitch.  The committee may differ internally about whether it is advisable to make the referral, but they appear of a mind that there is significant evidence of criminality. Vice Chairwoman of the committee, Liz Cheney, a Republican of Wyoming whose conservative roots are second to none, told CNN: “I think…it’s absolutely clear what President Trump was doing, what a number of people around him were doing that they knew it was unlawful. They did it anyway.”

Whether there is a referral or not, Trump and the Trumpists will call any Garland indictment political, so why not refer? We are not a banana republic and are loath to prosecute our former rulers, but if we don’t hold everyone accountable, and give a pass to a former President that we wouldn’t give to anyone else, doesn’t this make us a banana republic as well? Here, no one is—or should be— above the law.

What s/b watch

C.H. Truth said...

Problem Roger...

Is that it is perfectly legal to file lawsuits and ask for recounts... and Trump Jr would have no control as to how long that might take or whether they would delay certification past the safe harbor dates.

1) They would need standing and an actual case to get the courts to call for recounts. Either they had a case or they didn't. The fact that none of these states got delayed was basically because none of the lawsuits gained legal traction.

2) Had they had standing and the courts had ordered delays and recounts, then it would be perfectly legal for legislation to create a slate of electors if those delays went past the safe harbor dates.

3) Had enough of the states gotten delayed then you could have potentially and constitutionally seen the election get placed in the hands of the Legislation... as the Constitution recognizes.

Now you might not like this as a legal strategy... but filing lawsuits and asking for recounts is not illegal and if those suits had enough of a legal standing to cause things to go that way... well then that would have been constitutionally legal.

So none of that is suggesting anything "illegal" here Roger.

Just stuff you don't like.

Well there is neither anything illegal for calling for or granting a recount. We see them almost every election year. If a Judge stepped up and asked Georgia (for instance) to do a recourt....

how do you logically conclude that a Judge would be acting illegally?

Again, this is pretty simple. Liberals are buying into the scam (hook line and sinker) that even if all of the individual parts were legal, that somehow the "sum of the parts" becomes an illegal coup attempt.

There can be no plot of an illegal conspiracy to steal an election if said plot uses legal methods to overturn an election. The fact that people demand that this was the "most secure election ever" and "beyond contestation" is not legally binding. It does not then legally preclude any challenges. It is nothing more than a silly very wrong opinion.

The Trump team made their legal attempts to overturn several states and they lost many of those cases in court and nearly all of them that would have delayed anything. When you lose civil cases in court, you don't go to jail. You simply lost those cases in court. Had Trump filed for 1000 different legal challenges and lost them all, he would still not had committed a crime.

Remember when Al Gore challenged the results in Florida and the Florida State Supreme Court ordered a full hand recount of the state which could have easily taken Floridia past the safe harbor date... nobody concluded that Al Gore was plotting an illegal conspiracy.

He was making a court challenge. Nothing more and nothing less.

It is conceivable that only a few Democratic stronghold counties would have done a hand count (the rest settling for the machine count) and Al Gore could have won the election had the timing been such that Bush could not have countered with counties of his own.

Bush got a lot of heat for not being aggressive during that time like Gore was.

So I promise you that you would find hundreds of emails and communications between the Al Gore campaign and his legal team on the various strategies as to how to stop the certification of Florida until they had more votes... some of those strategies (such as only asking for selected hand counts) would not be "fair" but would be completely legal.

None of that made a conspiracy or a coup to take over the election.

There seems to be a real disconnect between the claims of widespread fraud, a stolen election and illegal voting made by President Donald Trump and his allies and the actual claims formally made by his lawyers in court.

Both Trump in his Twitter feed and White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany in her press conferences have made allegations of broad-based election fraud. But under questioning from judges in Arizona and Pennsylvania, Trump’s lawyers have backed away from actually asserting fraud. Despite Trump’s allegations to the contrary, his lawyers have acknowledged that they are not claiming that dead people voted or that occasional computer glitches were part of a deliberate conspiracy.

In one of several Pennsylvania cases, Trump attorneys actually signed a legal document in which they stated,

“Petitioners do not allege, and there is no evidence of, any fraud in connection with the challenged ballots; Petitioners do not allege, and there is no evidence of, any misconduct in connection with the challenged ballots; Petitioners do not allege, and there is no evidence of, any impropriety in connection with the challenged ballots; Petitioners do not allege, and there is no evidence of, any undue influence committed with respect to the challenged ballots.”

Nice attempt to change the subject from what Trump might have believed and what attorneys suggested in certain filings in certain courts. Completely 100% irrelevant.

Moreover that does absolutely nothing to prove that any of these court filings were illegal.

I have a little challenge for you... any "conspiracy" or other illegal "coup" attempt involves specific ILLEGAL steps along the way that makes said conspiracy illegal. It's easy to demand rhetorically that an attempt at a "conspiracy" or a "coup" is illegal... basically because you are using a term that denotes it and attaching it to actions that may or may not follow that same level of "corruption".

Which steps along the way of all of this were illegal?

- Was it the court challenges?
- Was it the potential planning for what "could" happen if the challenges were successful?
- Was it the fact that they communicated these strategies?

I mean at one point there was a lame attempt to say that Trump broke the law when he talked to Georgia officials about finding a number of fraudulent votes to disallow (which of course was dishonestly reported by the media as him asking Georgia to fine "him" votes). But that never went anywhere... largely because the facts were different than the allegations made in certain circles.

There were some who believed that Trump was wrong to tell Pence that he could prevent the counting of the electoral college votes, but that is simply an opinion, it carried with it no threats or coercion and Pence believed differently...

But where is the individual laws that were broken (which would be a requirement) for something to become an illegal conspiracy?

Nice attempt to change the subject from what Trump might have believed and what attorneys suggested in certain filings in certain courts. Completely 100% irrelevant.

I REPLY:
There have been numerous people who have said that from time to time Trump has made it clear that he did not himself believe his own lie about the election being rigged and stolen from him by fraud, and it is clear that his lawyers were careful not to come right out and knowingly lie by using the word "fraud," knowing that lie could get them disbarred.

I guess Ch is not bright enough to see there is a connection there.
