Here is a statistic for you!

Closing in on 300,000 comments!

Now granted... a quarter million or so are cut and pastes from Roger... but still quite a few.

Moreover, this does not include the old blog that ran on the Coldheartedtruth.com domain using the B2Evolution blogging software that I originally had. That blog was powered by a virtual personal server, we saw 10,000 or more visitors a day at the peak and we had literally thousands of people who had signed up as members (which you needed to be to comment).

We had esteemed bloggers like Gerry Daly, Sean Trende, and others who contributed as frequent commenters and occasional front pagers. The blog also had multiple alternate blogs running on the same domain. At one time the blog hit #62 on the Truth Laid Bear top 5000 blogs, rubbing elbows with the Powerline, Michelle Malkin, Allahpundit, The Vodka Pundit, Captain's Quarters, and others as TLB first pagers.

Possibly even more interesting... it has now been over 20 years since the core group of "Soars Board" posters started arguing online. Who would have thunk back in late 2001 that we would still be calling each other names and arguing over silly politics in 2022?

The meeting was the first for the troubled organization since 2019, following a two-year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The organization has been trying to regroup following a period of serious legal and financial turmoil that included a failed bankruptcy effort, a class-action lawsuit and a fraud investigation by New York’s attorney general. Once among the most powerful political organizations in the country, the NRA has seen its influence wane following a significant drop in political spending.

Wayne LaPierre, the group’s embattled chief executive, opened the program with remarks bemoaning the “21 beautiful lives ruthlessly and indiscriminately extinguished by a criminal monster.”

Still, he said that “restricting the fundamental human rights of law-abiding Americans to defend themselves is not the answer. It never has been.”

Later, several hundred people in the auditorium stood and bowed their heads in a moment of silence for the victims of the shooting. Several thousand people were inside the auditorium during the speeches, which appeared fewer than the number gathered outside. Many seats were empty.

NRA speakers unshaken on gun rights after school massacre

HOUSTON (AP) — One by one, they took the stage at the National Rifle Association’s annual convention in Houston and denounced the massacre of 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school across the state. And one by one, they insisted that further restricting access to firearms was not the answer to preventing future tragedies.

“The existence of evil in our world is not a reason to disarm law-abiding citizens,” said former President Donald Trump, who was among the Republicans who lined up to speak before the gun rights lobbying group Friday as thousands of protesters angry about gun violence demonstrated outside.

“The existence of evil is one of the very best reasons to arm law-abiding citizens,” he said Friday.

The gathering came just three days after the shooting in Uvalde and as the nation grappled with revelations that students trapped inside a classroom with the gunman repeatedly called 911 during the attack — one pleading “Please send the police now” — as officers waited in the hallway for more than 45 minutes.

Ukraine’s foreign minister offered a bleak assessment of fighting the east. “The military situation in eastern Ukraine is even worse than people say it is and the country needs heavy weapons now to effectively fight Russia,” Dmytro Kuleba said.

His comments came as the US and its allies indicated they would provide Ukraine with increasingly sophisticated weapons, including the multiple-launch rocket systems for which Kyiv has been appealing.

The British prime minister, Boris Johnson, told Bloomberg UK that Putin “at great cost to himself and to the Russian military, is continuing to chew through ground in Donbas”. “He’s continuing to make gradual, slow, but I’m afraid palpable, progress and therefore it is absolutely vital that we continue to support the Ukrainians militarily,

One more copy and paste

The debate over gun control is taking center stage in the Texas governor’s race after 21 people, including 19 children and two adults, were killed in a mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde earlier this week.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke made headlines on Wednesday when he confronted Gov. Greg Abbott (R) at a press conference, telling the Republican candidate that the mass shooting is ultimately “on him.”

The incident, as well as a mass protest also attended by O’Rourke outside the NRA’s annual event in Houston on Friday, has raised questions about whether the debate over how to deal with gun violence will be a top campaign issue in a state rocked by a slew of mass shootings in recent years. The Lone Star State has seen eight mass shootings over the past 13 years, according to data compiled by the Texas Tribune.

According to February polling from the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin, 43 percent of Texans said they believed gun laws should be “more strict,” while 34 percent said they should be “left as they are now.” Another 16 percent said they should be “less strict.”

With anger, fear and frustration rising over mass shootings in Texas and across the country, O’Rourke and Texas Democrats are now working to make gun control a deciding issue going into November.

It has been more than three weeks since the bombshell leak of a draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—the pending Supreme Court case that could end abortion rights in America as we know them. Justice Samuel Alito’s draft pronounces Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision recognizing a constitutional right to terminate a pregnancy, “egregiously wrong from the start.”

Laced with contempt for a right that has stood for 49 years, the Dobbs draft overrules Roe along with the 1992 follow-on decision Planned Parenthood v. Casey. The weaknesses of the draft are many: a shockingly narrow view of constitutional rights; an insistence that killing “an unborn human being” poses a “critical moral question” with no acknowledgement that commandeering wombs might raise an ethical quandary, too; reasoning that, despite dubious disclaimers, puts other rights—including contraception, sexual intimacy, and marriage equality—at risk.

But another glaring weakness in the draft has received less attention: its specious assertion that Roe hasn’t really impacted Americans’ lives, so there’s no good reason for the court to stand by it. The jarring ways in which individuals’ lives and relationships will be disrupted if this half-century-old precedent falls—a factor the Justices call “reliance interests”—came up repeatedly in the December 1 oral argument, with Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar arguing that scrapping the right to abortion would upend “societal reliance and what this right has meant for further ensuring equality.” But it barely makes an appearance in Alito’s draft.

When Americans come to rely on a decision of the Supreme Court, the Justices have historically exercised special caution about abandoning it. As Justice Antonin Scalia once explained, “The doctrine of stare decisis protects the legitimate expectations of those who live under the law.” The idea that reliance considerations are central to stare decisis and indeed to the rule of law has a long pedigree. In 1815, the court explained that a prior ruling “should always be adhered to” when overruling it would upend contractual arrangements. In 2019, Justice Alito himself wrote a majority opinion sticking by a longstanding “chain of precedent linking dozens of cases over 170 years” in a case about the double jeopardy clause of the Fifth Amendment. But when it comes to erasing abortion rights, Alito’s draft breezily asserts that Roe has created no “concrete” reliance interests for Americans. And away it goes.

Yet while Trump’s status as a kingmaker has been diminished, and his “Stop the steal” obsession is wearing thin, it would be unwise to extrapolate too much from primaries where it was always going to be hard to oust popular, well-funded incumbents.

Trump continues to raise vast sums of money and command loyalty from most Republicans in Congress as well as from the Republican National Committee. Polls suggest that he is more popular with the Republican base now than when he won the nomination for president in 2016. His “America first” mantra is now in the party’s DNA; even the candidates he does not endorse typically do endorse him.

Walsh, who challenged Trump in the 2020 presidential primary and now hosts a podcast, added: “Nothing has changed. This is Trump’s party and everything that’s happened this primary season just continues to reflect that … Wake me up when an anti-Trump Republican wins a primary. That would be news.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The hard-right, nativist-populist strain of Republican politics predates Trump and will surely survive him. This year’s primary season winners in Georgia and elsewhere have been careful not to disavow the movement, or its patriarch, even when they lack his blessing.

“Donald Trump has transformed the Republican party over the past five years and it is now a solid majority Trumpist party with everything that entails in policy and in tone,” said Bill Galston, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution thinktank in Washington. “On the other hand, Republicans, including very conservative ones, are clearly willing to entertain the possibility of Trumpism without Trump.”

Trump is now 75 and could be living a quiet, golf-playing retirement like other past presidents. But against the counsel of some of his inner circle, he chose to make this year’s midterm elections about him and the primaries – votes in states and districts to decide which Republicans will take on Democrats in November – a referendum on his continued influence.

Democrats See Progress With Manchin in Last-Ditch Talks
May 28, 2022 at 8:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 64 Comments

“Democrats are hoping quiet negotiations between Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Joe Manchin can quickly produce an agreement to advance key elements of President Biden’s economic agenda before a narrowing window to pass ambitious legislation ahead of the midterm elections closes,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Mr. Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, and Mr. Schumer, a Democrat from New York, have held a series of meetings in recent weeks on a package focused on lowering prescription drug costs, raising taxes and bolstering energy production in the U.S.

“While the substance of those conversations remain closely held, some Democrats and outside analysts now expect a possible agreement could raise roughly $1 trillion in revenue and spend about $500 billion over a decade. With roughly half the new revenue dedicated toward reducing the deficit, the spending would focus on tax incentives for reducing carbon emissions and some support for fossil fuels, as well as an extension of subsidies for purchasing health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.”

THREAD:
https://twitter.com/ByMikeBaker/status/1530357140191186944

I have spent the past few days researching the training of Uvalde officers, including the tactics they were expected to use to halt school shooters.

The documents are jarring. Here’s a thread of our findings so far.

1/9

In the past two years, the Uvalde school district has hosted at least two active-shooter training days. One of them was just two months ago.

The trainings included both classroom teachings and role-playing scenarios inside school hallways (below).

https://nytimes.com/2022/05/26/us/mass-shooting-school-security.html

2/9

The Uvalde training session 2 months ago relied on guidelines that give explicit expectations for officers responding to an active shooter.

The training is clear: Time is of the essence. The “first priority is to move in and confront the attacker.”

https://nytimes.com/2022/05/27/us/active-shooting-trainings.html

3/9

But how should officers confront the gunman? With a tactical team? The training says that's probably not feasible, because the urgency is so high.

A SINGLE OFFICER, the training says, may need to confront the suspect on their own.

4/9

The guidelines provide sobering clarity: The first officers may be risking their lives. But, it says, innocent lives take priority.

“A first responder unwilling to place the lives of the innocent above their own safety should consider another career field."

continues with reference material in thread linked above

so the kids performed as they were taught

and woke cops didn't

well they were waiting for social workers

We can't address hand guns, that are responsible for the majority of murders in our cities.

We Americans all share this vast country and need to figure out how to make it better and keep one another alive and thriving. Right now, we’re failing at that primary responsibility. There are glimmers of hope, especially at the state level, that things are changing. But even there, progress is agonizingly slow and won’t be enough for the hundreds of Americans who will be shot today and tomorrow and every day until action is taken.

We could reduce the number of types incidents in the last few weeks, by banning military style semiautomatic weapons and require background checks, especially in the modern internet world.

So the fact that rifles are legal is criminal?

keep in mind, Reverend... that there are between 17 and 18 million sports rifles (or assault rifles as some would call them).

All of those rifles combined make up a percent or two of the overall murders... while handguns make up about 2/3 of all murders.

For every one rifle used to kill someone over 40,000 others are being legally owned and used by law abiding citizens who are not using them for any nefarious purposes.

Your automobile is statistically more dangerous than these rifles.

But of course.... Reverend. We understand why you ignore the 13-14 thousand murders committed by handguns and want to fixate on the couple of hundred killed by assault rifles...

One word for you, Reverend!

Race!

You want to desperately pretend that a crime committed by a white person (whom your political cronies can label a white supremacist) is the "real" problem of society...

as probably 175-200 people will be murdered by non-white supremacists just this weekend alone!

Your Party is all about Race... and looking to do something about "white supremacy" is apparently way more important than actually preventing Americans from being killed.

Less than two hours after returning from a five-day trip to Asia, a visit meant to signal American strength, Joe Biden walked slowly into the Roosevelt Room of the White House, visibly shaken, to address one of the nation’s greatest weaknesses.

Another bloody mass shooting in America. This time in Uvalde, Texas, where an 18-year-old gunman killed 19 children and two teachers, making it the deadliest shooting at an elementary school since the massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012.

It was just 10 days after a gunman had targeted Black shoppers at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, killing 10 people. And just nine days after a gunman opened fire in a Taiwanese church in southern California, leaving one dead and several wounded.

“Why?” Biden said, his voice rising in anger. “Why are we willing to live with this carnage? Why do we keep letting this happen?”

Nearly a decade after watching Republicans defeat a gun control package he helped develop as vice-president in response to the shooting at Sandy Hook, Biden’s wrenching search for answers to this uniquely American tragedy continues.

He entered the White House with a sweeping plan to address gun violence, but too-narrow margins in Congress to see them enacted. Once again, the president finds himself stuck between a desire to act and the limits of power to do so

In regards to the war in Ukraine 🇺🇦.

As long as Putin believes Russia’s military and treasury can outlast Ukraine’s, he has an incentive to wage a war of attrition. NATO could counter this incentive. A firm commitment now to pay and keep paying for the war could undermine Russia’s plan to wear down Ukraine, hastening the end of fighting.

The flip side, however, is that Western hesitancy or ambiguity about its support could coax Russia back toward that war of attrition. The U.S. just committed $40 billion to Ukraine. Britain added a further £1.3 billion ($1.6 billion). By Gorodnichenko’s numbers, that’s equal to about six or seven months of Ukraine’s war bill. Will that ratchet up the costs enough on Putin? Or will the West need to go further?

If only “back Ukraine at all costs” were a simple and safe choice. Peace may exert a gravitational pull, but that does not mean nothing escapes its orbit. If Russia mistrusts Western resolve, misperceives the threat or is ideologically intent on takeover anyway, the fighting could be long and intense. NATO could find itself supporting another forever war, one with a small but scary risk of escalation between NATO and Russia.

We must support weapons, financial aid and debt forgiveness for Ukraine in this time of need, but let’s be clear-eyed about what it means to send a firm and committed signal. It means that six or seven months from now, if Putin hasn’t backed down, the West’s unity and passion cannot wane. Should we waffle or equivocate, the highest cost of ongoing war will be borne by Ukrainians.

Scott the legislation during the Clinton administration was not overturned by the Supreme Court.

Between 1994 and 2004, certain “semiautomatic assault weapons” were banned at the federal level, but currently there is no federal law regulating these highly lethal weapons.

Wounds caused by assault weapons are more severe and lethal than wounds caused by other firearms, and, particularly when paired with large capacity magazines, assault weapons can injure more people more quickly. Because of this lethality, assault weapons are frequently the guns of choice for individuals who carry out horrific public attacks.

Assault weapons have been used in the seven deadliest mass shootings in the last decade. An analysis of public mass shootings resulting in four or more deaths found that more than 85% of such fatalities were caused by assault rifles.2An assailant with an assault rifle is able to hurt and kill twice the number of people compared to an assailant with a non-assault rifle or handgun.3

A growing body of research demonstrates that banning assault weapons can help to prevent gun violence. Studies of both the lapsed federal assault weapons ban and state-level assault weapons bans show that these laws help to reduce fatalities and injuries from mass shootings, as well as the use of assault weapons in crime.

During the 10-year period the federal assault weapons ban was in effect, mass shooting fatalities were 70% less likely to occur compared to the periods before and after the ban.4.

Ever since private ownership of machine guns was made illegal, there have been nearly zero deaths due to machine guns simply because the punishment for merely owning one is so severe that criminals do not risk it.

Joe Biden lamented “too much violence, too much fear, too much grief” in the latest US mass shooting as he prepared to visit Uvalde, where authorities said police had made “the wrong decision” not to storm a classroom where a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers.

The US president and first lady, Jill Biden, will travel to the small southern Texas city on Sunday, five days after it was plunged into horror when an 18-year-old with a military-style rifle attacked an elementary school.

His remarks came after the head of the Texas department of public safety admitted on Friday afternoon that “of course it was the wrong decision” for armed police to wait for an extended period outside the classroom where the gunman in Tuesday’s school shooting was killing children and teachers, without storming in.

Police’s updated timeline suggests that roughly 78 minutes passed from the time that the gunman entered the building to when officers finally entered the classroom where he was located. Meanwhile, students trapped inside a classroom with the gunman repeatedly called 911, including one who pleaded, “Please send the police now” as officers waited in the hallway for more than 45 minutes.

Steven McCraw, department of public safety director, shed tears and said at a tense press conference in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 young children and two teachers were gunned down by a local 18-year-old that “there’s no excuse” for the failure of trained personnel not to have intervened sooner.

At least 17 others were wounded and the victims were all inside one classroom.

‘That smile I will never forget’: the victims of the Texas school shooting

At a separate news conference, Texas’s governor, Greg Abbott, showed no sympathy for the controversy facing law enforcement in Uvalde, saying that local police officials had initially “misled” him about the speed and resolve of officers’ response to the mass killing at Robb elementary on Tuesday.

“I am livid,” Abbott said. “My expectation is that the law enforcement leaders … leading the investigation … get to the bottom of every fact with absolute certainty.

“The families whose lives have been destroyed … need answers that are accurate.”

Uvalde’s mayor, Don McLaughlin, also claimed to be confused about Friday’s revelations about the police response. And, without elaborating, he said his staff would make any “change” needed if deemed necessary after an investigation into the response.

Biden spoke about the tragedy in Uvalde during a commencement speech he gave on Saturday morning at the University of Delaware where he graduated from. 🎓

Scott an interesting article I will link but you won't like it but this British guy knows his shit.

Putin may still have held out hope that he could divide the US and Europe on their sanctions agenda, and likely did not expect that Brussels and Berlin would be so willing to go for the jugular – few did.

However, when Putin acted with wanton disregard both for the civilian population of Ukraine and began to shell its largest cities, such a sanctions response was warranted. Vladimir Putin bears sole responsibility for destroying the Russian people’s economic livelihood.

Russia now faces a choice between another 1918, 1991 or 1998-style economic crisis. Unless Putin withdraws from Ukraine or the Russian people can otherwise force change in the Kremlin’s strategy, a 1918-style collapse is the base scenario, and the 1990s options are optimistic.

Ruth Whitfield, 86, was shot and killed along with nine other people, all of them Black, when a white supremacist and self-declared “eco-fascist” extremist allegedly traveled far from his home to wreak violence and tragedy.

The vice-president, Kamala Harris, and second gentleman, Doug Emhoff, attended and the civil rights activist Al Sharpton delivered the eulogy at the service at Mount Olive Baptist church in Buffalo.

Harris met bereaved families before the service and, according to the White House, had made clear before the funeral that she did not intend to speak at the church.

However Sharpton in the moment insisted that Harris come forward an address the congregation.

Harris said: “The pain that this family is feeling right now, and the nine other families here in Buffalo – I cannot even begin to express our collective pain as a nation for what you are feeling in such an extreme way, to not only lose someone that you love, but through an act of extreme violence and hate.”
