There are dumb stories... and then....

There are stories so dumb that it makes you wonder how people who read them can get through the day without injuring themselves...

This is not the Onion or Babylon Bee... but a serious story?

Uvalde Police Waited an Hour to Storm School
May 27, 2022 at 1:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 53 Comments

“Police who responded to the mass shooting at an elementary school here waited around an hour to enter the classroom where the gunman had locked himself because a commander on scene incorrectly thought no lives were at risk,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said Steven McCraw, director of Texas Department of Public Safety: “Obviously, based upon the information we have, children in that classroom were at risk and it was in fact still an active shooter… It was the wrong decision. Period.”

New York Times:
Students in the room with the gunman called 911 many times.

HOW SAD!

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Tacoma, Washington State – Marcia Carter, 62, stands on the sidewalk gazing solemnly at the single-storey housing unit with its peeling white and blue paint. The front porch of the decaying property is sealed off with plywood. Beside Marcia, on a patch of dying grass, is a small wooden crucifix, wrapped in a Seattle Seahawks bandana, and dotted with stickers of musical notes. It is inscribed with a date: 03-03-2020.

It was here that Marcia’s son, Manuel Elijah Ellis, was killed by Tacoma police officers as he walked home from a convenience store two years ago. His final words were, “I can’t breathe.”

“The police murdered him,” Marcia says coldly, each word punctuated with fury and sadness.

“Nobody was there to save my son,” the retired high school guidance counselor adds.

Manuel was handcuffed, tased, and suffocated to death. An autopsy ruled his death a homicide.

He was 33 years old.

The police narrative

On March 3, 2020, Manuel walked into a south Tacoma 7-Eleven and bought a box of raspberry donuts and a bottle of water. He paid for his snacks and left the store at 11:11pm. Soon after, he was dead.

A few blocks from the store, while walking east along 96th Street, Manuel encountered Tacoma police officers Christopher Burbank and Matthew Collins.

Burbank and Collins, whose account of the deadly arrest was contradicted by three eyewitnesses, as well as video recordings of the incident, would later tell crime scene investigators they had first seen Manuel acting erratically and chasing after an unidentified motorist’s car at a set of nearby traffic lights.

The two officers told detectives that Manuel then began banging on their police cruiser, attacked them as they exited the vehicle, and fought their attempts to detain him, ultimately resulting in his death, according to a Pierce County Sheriff’s Department supplemental report (PDF).

Tacoma police denied any wrongdoing and portrayed Manuel as the aggressor.

The south Tacoma 7-Eleven where Manuel Ellis purchased snacks shortly before he was killed [Dorian Geiger/Al Jazeera]

For weeks, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, which had been asked to handle the investigation, parroted the city police’s version of events. In particular, then-spokesperson Ed Troyer — who was later elected sheriff in November 2020 — vehemently denied that officers had placed a knee on Ellis’ back or head.

At the time, the Tacoma Police Department didn’t equip its officers with body cameras, which Manuel’s family and lawyer say allowed law enforcement to largely control the narrative around his death.

That was until citizen video — two clips filmed by a passing motorist — and recordings from a nearby home surveillance camera emerged, challenging the police’s version of events.

The witness accounts

Prosecutors say three separate eyewitnesses, including a pizza delivery driver, and two motorists (one of whom filmed mobile phone footage of the encounter) said the unarmed Black man had interacted with Burbank and Collins for roughly 10 to 15 seconds as he passed by their squad cruiser.

They described the brief exchange as “peaceful” and “respectful” and said Manuel displayed “no signs of aggression”.

Then, they explained, as Manuel walked away from the police vehicle, Burbank “abruptly swung open the passenger door”, knocking Manuel to his knees. According to the witnesses, as Manuel tried to get up, Burbank climbed on top of him.

“[Manuel] Ellis was not fighting back,” a probable cause statement obtained by Al Jazeera English said. The document that details the basis for charges also stated: “All three civilian witnesses at the intersection…state that they never saw [Manuel] Ellis strike at the officers.”

.

“Manny didn’t deserve to die,” Marcia says. “I miss him. It hurts my heart. He had to be the sacrifice for the family. But I know he got his crown … My son is in no more pain.”

When I told my wife (who is German) what is posted at 1:31, which I had just learned, she disgustedly told me that she understood that such remarks had been made by SOME of the police.

I even asked in my post,
Is it true?

The fact that police did not enter sooner is apparently due to a tragic misunderstanding. And yet, there were parents who kept begging them to enter.

How sad that there were children making repeated 911 calls pleading for the police to come. And at least one who made such calls was then killed. How sad!

Now, if my wife was wrong and there were no such disparaging racist remarks on the part of any Anglo police, I will be VERY GLAD to hear it.

The distinguished surname Albarado comes from Spain, a country rich in culture and history. The earliest forms of hereditary surnames in Spain were the patronymic surnames, which are derived from the father's given name, and metronymic surnames, which are derived from the mother's given name. Spanish patronymic names emerged as early as the mid-9th century and the most common patronymic suffix is ez.

NEW YORK, May 27 (Reuters) - Wall Street extended its rally on Friday as signs of peaking inflation and consumer resiliency sent investors into the long holiday weekend with growing optimism that the Federal Reserve's policy tightening can avoid tipping the economy into recession.

All three major U.S. stock indexes were sharply higher and on track to snap their longest weekly losing streaks in decades.

Three days after the worst mass shooting of 2022, and the Uvalde law enforcement and Texas DPS has laid bare how utterly pathetic and failed their (non) response to a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School actually was. Each piece of information that comes out makes it even more obvious just how much they f*cked this up. In fact, I wonder how many lives could have been saved if law enforcement did ANYTHING. I mean, it is clear they took up to an hour to just watch from the outside of the school as a full classroom and 2 teachers were being held hostage. They didn't even try to get into the room because it was LOCKED. Windows? Didn't try. Break the door down? Nope. Just stood there waiting for a key. WAITING FOR A KEY. As kids were screaming and getting murdered.

Words escape me, truly. I have a masters degree in criminal justice. I worked in this field for years. But even a layman with basic common sense can see ALL the ways law enforcement failed. Across the board. There is, in fact, nothing they did right.

The administration is leaning toward sending the systems as part of a larger package of military and security assistance to Ukraine, which could be announced as soon as next week.

Senior Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, have pleaded in recent weeks for the US and its allies to provide the Multiple Launch Rocket System, or MLRS. The US-made weapon systems can fire a barrage of rockets hundreds of kilometers — much farther than any of the systems Ukraine already has — which the Ukrainians argue could be a gamechanger in their war against Russia.

Nonsense Denny...

I posted no such thing.

There are supposedly around 5 million US citizens who legally own some sort of sports rifles... many probably qualify as "assault rifles" depending on who wants to define them.

Of those five million people... less than 500 people are killed from rifles of all sorts. That would mean that for every one of those people who might have killed someone there is about 10,000 others who are safe legal owners of rifles. Many are hunters, collectors, etc...

Meanwhile, the majority of the 20,000 murders per year are from guns, and almost all of those gun murders are from handguns. Not to mention how many other crimes are committed with handguns? You see very many car jackings or street muggings taking place with someone walking around with an assault rifle?

The issue Denny doesn't seem to grasp is that 98% (or more) of all gun violence comes from handguns.

Yet many suggest that we can curb gun violence by taking away the rifles from the five million who are legally owning them and not causing any trouble or committing any crimes.

In fact... this general suggestion.... is usually called "common sense" by liberals.

A  guilty verdict would be cheered by Trump and his supporters, who have looked to the Durham investigation to undercut the original Trump-Russia probe that they have long seen as politically motivated. But the case against Sussmann is narrow in nature, involves a peripheral aspect of that probe and alleges misconduct by a tipster to the government rather than by anyone at the FBI or any other federal agency.

Nonetheless, the two weeks of testimony in federal court in Washington have exposed the extent to which Democratic interests, opposition research, the media and law enforcement all came to be entangled in the run-up to the presidential election.

Prosecutors have portrayed Sussmann as determined to gin up investigations into Trump that could then be disclosed to the media and yield stories negative to his campaign.

“It wasn’t about national security,” said Jonathan Algor, a Durham team prosecutor. “It was about promoting opposition research against the opposition candidate, Donald Trump.”

Sussmann is charged with a single count of making a false statement. That charge carries a maximum five-year prison sentence, though if convicted, Sussmann is likely to get far less — if any — prison time. He did not take the stand during the trial.

The case turns on a Sept. 19, 2016 meeting in which Sussmann presented the FBI’s top lawyer, James Baker, with computer data that Sussmann said suggested a secret communications back channel between a Russia-based bank and the Trump Organization, the candidate’s company.

Such a back channel, if it existed, would have been explosive information at a time when the FBI was examining links between Trump and Russia. But after assessing the data, the FBI quickly determined that there was no suspicious contact at all.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Prosecutors say Sussmann lied to Baker by saying he was not participating in the meeting on behalf of a particular client. They say he was actually there on behalf of the Clinton campaign and another client, a technology executive whom the Durham team says tasked researchers with looking for internet traffic involving Trump associates and Russians.

Sussmann lied about his clients, prosecutors allege, to give the material extra credibility because he figured that the information would not be investigated if the FBI thought it was mere opposition research being pushed by the Clinton campaign.

“The defendant knew he had to hide his clients if there was any chance of getting his allegations to the FBI — and that, ladies and gentlemen, is why the defendant lied,” Algor said.

To convict, prosecutors need to show not only that Sussmann lied but that the lie was material — namely, that it mattered or at least could have mattered to the FBI’s work.

Algor said the fact that Sussmann repeatedly billed the Clinton campaign for his work on the Alfa Bank matter is proof he was acting on the campaign’s behalf when he met with the FBI. But Berkowitz noted that Sussmann billed his taxi ride to FBI headquarters for the meeting to his law firm, rather than the campaign.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Berkowitz also tried to cast doubt on what exactly was said in the meeting. Prosecutors showed jurors a text message Sussmann sent Baker the night before the meeting in which he requested a sit-down on a sensitive matter and said he would be coming by himself and not on behalf of a client.

But Berkowitz reminded jurors that the only false statement that was charged took place during the following day’s meeting and that no one can be sure exactly what was said because Baker and Sussmann were the only participants and neither took notes.

Berkowitz also suggested that it was technically accurate if Sussmann suggested he was not acting on behalf of a client because he never asked the FBI do anything with the information he was providing.

“When you go somewhere on behalf of a client, you’re advocating for the client, you’re asking for something,” Berkowitz said. “Mr. Sussmann didn’t ask Jim Baker for anything.”

The two sides also quibbled over Baker’s testimony, with Berkowitz citing dozens of instances in which Baker said on the stand that he did not recall or could not remember something.

Prosecutors seized on the fact that Baker said he was “100% confident” that Sussmann had told him that he was not acting on behalf of a client and that he probably wouldn’t have taken the meeting if he had been told otherwise.

“Ladies and gentlemen, would James Baker come on the stand under oath, a former high-ranking FBI official, and subject himself to the penalty of perjury if it weren’t true,” another prosecutor, Andrew DeFilippis, told jurors. “No, he wouldn’t do that. None of us would do that, would take that risk.”

Durham has so far charged three people. The case against Sussmann is the only one to have reached trial

BWAA, there are no limits to the depths of your stupidity.

The guns used in Buffalo and Uvalde were all legally PURCHASED.

That means the purchaser had never been convicted of a felony.

What you're missing here is that at least in Buffalo, the shooter was a KNOWN nutbag to the NY State Fucking Police and they did NOTHING.
And had they tried to the NYACLU and every other asshat pack of leftists would have rushed to the nutbags defense. And perhaps rightly so. You start restricting civil liberties of the crazies and all hell breaks loose.

And I think it's coming to light that the Uvalde shooter had known issues as well.

Here's where are leaders have fucked us all - Instead of sending $40 BILLION to some coked up clown in Ukraine, we could harden every school in America. Magnetic locks, metal detectors (we have those now in the inner cities like Albany) and armed to the fucking teeth guards. Real ones. Not mall cops or social workers. People trained to kill swiftly, efficiently, with overwhelming force, and without remorse. Like the ones who guard our elite "leaders" 24/7/365.

What happened in Buffalo and Uvalde was completely preventable. But out "leaders" would prefer it happen so they can score cheap political points.

C.H. Truth said...

Well Denny....

There certainly are going to be be illegal assault weapons just as there are illegal handguns. Nobody has suggested that there is not or that every rifle is legal.

The reality is that your gun grab to "ban assault rifles" would quite obviously be specifically targeted to registered guns who are in the hands of law abiding citizens.

The assault rifles in the hands of criminals or illegally purchased by someone with a criminal or mentally ill past would obviously not be on the radar BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT KNOW WHERE THEY ARE!

So the brilliant Idea would be to take the legal registered guns away from legal law abiding citizens... because it's the only ones that the Government can track.

So actually Denny....

You make another wonderful point.

The idea of the Government banning or taking assault rifles is even stupider when you consider that they will not be able to know which criminals or mentally ill people have possession of them... they will only know those who are law abiding and registered them.

Thanks for further demonstrating the complete idiocy of banning assault rifles.

Trump has long alleged that the Democratic heads of the New York Attorney General’s Office and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office have been harassing him and his family business for politically motivated reasons.

But Attorney General James responded to the dismissal by calling Trump’s legal challenges “baseless.”

“Time and time again, the courts have made clear that Donald J. Trump’s baseless legal challenges cannot stop our lawful investigation into his and the Trump Organization’s financial dealings,” James said. “No one in this country can pick and choose how the law applies to them, and Donald Trump is no exception. As we have said all along, we will continue this investigation undeterred.”

Law&Crime reached out to Trump attorney Alina Habba for comment on the ruling and potential next steps.

“There is no question that we will be appealing this decision,” Habba said in response. “If Ms. James’s egregious conduct and harassing investigation does not meet the bad faith exception to the Younger abstention doctrine, then I cannot imagine a scenario that would.”
The bottom line is he may end up in jail for tax evasion. Or bankruptcy

Abso-fucking-lutely.

Public education is child abuse. Period. full stop.

The bad news for President Joe Biden is that his popularity has fallen, this past week, into dead last place. Of the 13 presidents during the polling era, none has been in worse shape at this point in his first term, almost 500 days into a presidency, than Biden’s 40.5% approval rating. That’s according to FiveThirtyEight’s estimate of his average standing in all the public opinion polls. It’s not quite Biden’s own low point — he briefly dipped a bit lower in late February — but it’s close.

Is there any good news for the president? Sort of. His 40.5% is not a historic low for first-term presidents. Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, Lyndon Johnson and Harry Truman all had lower lows. Clinton, Reagan and Truman hit bottom before being re-elected, with the latter two dipping well below 40% closer to their elections than Biden is to his. Indeed, there’s no relationship between approval ratings at the 500-day mark and re-election.

The news is worse for Democrats with respect to this November’s midterm elections, however. It’s not clear when voters make up their minds before heading to the polls for general elections, but political scientists do know that presidential approval ratings are usually strong factors affecting midterm results.

BWAAAAAAAAAA!!! You are obviously a product of that philosophy shorty!!!!! LOLOLO

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

But the flip side is that the same goes for economic growth and jobs. If the labor market cools but remains at a historically healthy level, voters may be more likely to punish Biden for a recent falloff than they would be to reward him for the still-low rates of unemployment.

Remember that approval ratings tend to drive pundits’ (and often politicians’) views of the president and everything he does. When a president is unpopular, then pundits ascribe that trouble to practically everything the president is doing. That’s a fallacy. If it’s true that inflation and the pandemic account for the bulk of Biden’s unpopularity, then other things he’s doing may actually be helping him, not hurting him. But much of what presidents do, even what they do publicly, just doesn’t change the way people think about his success or failure. Especially if the pandemic goes away and if inflation rates drop as predicted by most experts. In 2024.

"Need" has nothing to do with it and it is complete red herring.

Do Americans need fancy cars when everyone could get by on a cheap piece of shit? Should everyone live in a one bedroom apartment because people don't need big houses? Should we never go out to eat because we don't "need" to do so? Nice clothes, jewelry, shoes, hobbies, etc... etc....

More misinformation from Republicans

The claim that mental illness produces such attacks implies that mass shooters are insane, as if they are disconnected from reality and act based on no rational thinking. This goes hand in hand with the common theme that these offenders “snap,” which suggests they commit impulsive acts of violence, bursting forth from nowhere. Both explanations are wrong.

Extensive case history shows that mass shooters don’t just suddenly break—they decide. They develop violent ideas that stem from entrenched grievances, rage, and despair. In many cases they feel justified in their actions and regard killing as the sole solution to a problem. They arm themselves and prepare to attack, choosing where and when to strike. Often this is a highly organized and methodical process.

Blaming mental illness for mass shootings inflicts a damaging stigma on the millions of people who suffer from clinical afflictions, the vast majority of whom are not violent. Extensive research shows the link between mental illness and violent behavior is small and not useful for predicting violent acts; people with diagnosable conditions such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder are in fact far more likely to be victims than perpetrators of violence.

How that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while

But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died

So bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee
But the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing, "This'll be the day that I die"
This will be the day that I die

Did you write the Book of Love?
And do you have faith in God above?
If the Bible tells you so
Do you believe in rock 'n' roll?
Can music save your mortal soul?
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Well I know that you're in love with him
'Cause I saw you dancing in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes
Then I dig those rhythm and blues

I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died

I started singing bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee
But the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing, "This'll be the day that I die"

Jury Convicts Hitler-Loving Army Reservist of Felony and Misdemeanor Charges in Jan. 6 Capitol Attack

MARISA SARNOFFMay 27th, 2022, 6:28 pm

An Army Reservist from New Jersey who has what prosecutors describe as an “affinity” for Adolf Hitler has been convicted of five charges, including one felony, for participating in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

A jury convicted Timothy Hale-Cusanelli, 32, after a few hours of deliberation on Friday. It’s the fifth jury trial victory in the federal government’s expansive prosecution of the participants in the riot at the Capitol, when an angry crowd of thousands of Donald Trump supporters, angry about the results of the 2020 presidential election, converged on the building and temporarily forced a stop to the certification of Joe Biden‘s electoral win.

The case was before U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden, a Trump appointee who has overseen two bench trials of Jan. 6 defendants, one of which resulted in a full acquittal.

According to prosecutors, Hale-Cusanelli drove to Washington, D.C. the morning of Jan. 6, and joined a group of rioters that had pushed past police trying to guard the Capitol. He urged others to “advance” on the Capitol, and was among the first wave of rioters to breach the building at 2:12 p.m. at the Senate Wing Door.

Prosecutors say he stayed inside for about 40 minutes, during which time he harassed Capitol Police and told them a “revolution” was coming. In the days following Jan. 6, he reportedly told a friend that breaching the Capitol was “exhilarating” for him, that he was hoping for a “civil war,” and that the “tree of liberty must be refreshed with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”

He was enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves at the time. He had also worked as a contractor at a local naval weapons station, where he had “secret” security clearance, the DOJ says. He has since been barred from the facility.

At his trial, which began on Monday, Hale-Cusanelli reportedly said that he tried to defend himself by essentially pleading ignorance. According to a report from NBC News, Hale-Cusanelli said he didn’t know that the Capitol was where the House and Senate conduct their business, and that he didn’t know that lawmakers were inside the Capitol building on Jan. 6.

“I know this sounds idiotic, but I’m from New Jersey,” Hale-Cusanelli reportedly testified on Thursday. “I feel like an idiot. It sounds idiotic, and it is.”

“I didn’t know the Capitol building was the same as the congressional building,” Hale-Cusanelli also said, according to NBC.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The jury wasn’t convinced, and neither, apparently, was McFadden. According to NBC, after the verdict, McFadden said that he was open to giving Hale-Cusanelli—who, despite his proclaimed ignorance, had also testified at trial that he had closely followed the electoral college certification process—a sentencing enhancement because he found his testimony to be “highly dubious.”

Hale-Cusanelli was ultimately convicted of obstruction of an official proceeding, a felony, and four misdemeanors: entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building, and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building.

Court documents show that Hale-Cusanelli was not shy in expressing his love of Hitler and his enthusiasm for the Nazis’ genocidal goals. Several people who knew Hale-Cusanelli told federal investigators that the defendant expressed support for killing Jews and “babies born with any deformities or disabilities,” and had bemoaned that “Hitler should have finished the job.” One interviewee told investigators that Hale-Cusanelli “spoke of his dislike of Jews every day.”

Unsurprisingly, Hale-Cusanelli also didn’t like women, minorities, and immigrants. Court documents contain numerous examples of the defendant espousing his support for white supremacist ideology and the repeated use of racist memes and anti-Black slurs.

Although Hale-Cusanelli’s views were well-known among his colleagues, they apparently were afraid to report him because he was “crazy” and they felt they would be in danger if he found out.

Good people on both sides

The case against Mr. Sussmann involves a narrow charge — an accusation of lying to the F.B.I. in a 2016 meeting — but is freighted with partisan overtones. It is also a test of the special counsel who brought it, John H. Durham, because it is his first case to go to trial since he was appointed three years ago to scour the Trump-Russia investigation for any wrongdoing.

Two prosecutors told a jury that there was no doubt that Mr. Sussmann had lied to the F.B.I. to conceal his clients — including the Clinton campaign — at the September 2016 meeting, which focused on suspicious data that cybersecurity experts said suggested the possibility of a covert communications channel between Russia and someone close to Donald J. Trump.

“It wasn’t about national security,” said one of the prosecutors, Jonathan Algor. “It was about promoting opposition research against the opposition candidate — Donald Trump.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

But a defense lawyer, Sean M. Berkowitz, portrayed the case as riddled with uncertainties — including about what Mr. Sussmann actually said, whether it was false and whether it mattered if he was there on behalf of clients since the F.B.I. would have investigated the tip regardless. Each was a path to find reasonable doubt and vote to acquit, he said.

“Mr. Sussmann’s liberty is at stake,” he said. “The time for political conspiracy theories is over. The time to talk about the evidence is now.”

A verdict is expected as early as Tuesday.
