January 6 committee begins fourth hearing

The House committee investigating the January 6 insurrection has begun its fourth hearing, focusing on Trump’s efforts to convince state officials to swing the results of the 2020 election in his favor.

Among those testifying today will be:

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who last month fended off a Trump-backed attempt to oust him from office.Gabriel Sterling, Georgia’s voting system implementation manager during the 2020 election who is now Raffensperger’s top deputy and vocally condemned Trump’s baseless claims about the integrity of his state’s election.

Rusty Bowers, the Republican speaker of the Arizona House.

Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, a Georgia poll worker who, along with her mother, was accused of rigging the vote in a number of conspiracies promoted by Trump supporters.

Several people are getting threatened with violence by Republicans

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

“Don’t be distracted by politics. This is serious,” Liz Cheney, the January 6 committee’s top Republican member, said in an appeal against partisan politics as the hearing began.

“We cannot let America become a nation of conspiracy theories and thug violence,” she added.

Yet Cheney herself may not be able to escape the partisan implications of her strident denunciation of Trump and his actions around January 6. She’s been booted from her state’s Republican party and is facing a vigorous primary challenge.

The committee is now showing video of Trump supporters gathered outside Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s house at night.

“Stop the steal!” the video shows them chanting, with one voicing calling Benson a “threat to democracy.”

“My stomach sunk,” Benson told the committee. “Are they coming with guns? Are they going to attack my house?... That was the scariest moment just not knowing what was gonna happen.”

Roger... Cheney isn't facing a vigorous primary challenge... she is behind in the polls by between 20-30 points. She is going to lose the GOP nomination...

and her seat, unless she decides to switch Parties to run against the Republican and then she still likely loses just as bad.

And you notice how almost nobody is around commenting?

if the committee actually provides something I have not heard 1000 times before, then perhaps I will take interest. But if any of this is "new" to you... then you are completely living in a fucking cave, because it's the same shit... just in different packaging.

Trump said this just before he testified to hold his oath to the Constitution.

Arizona Speaker of the House Rusty Bowers is the latest RINO to play along with the Unselect Committee. In November 2020, Bowers thanked me for getting him elected. He said he would have lost, and in fact expected to lose, if I hadn’t come along. During the conversation, he told me that the election was rigged and that I won Arizona. He said he got more votes than I did which could never have happened. In fact, he said without me, he would have been out of office, and he expected to be prior to my coming along, and big Arizona rallies. The night before the election he walked outside with his wife and saw the tremendous Trump enthusiasm and told her, “You know what? Maybe I will win after all”—and he did. Bowers should hope there’s not a tape of the conversation.

Former President Donald Trump on the morning of Bower's testimony

He is a very conservative Republicans who stood by his oath.

But you have lost your mind Scott..

I just watched him say this under oath

Rusty Bowers, the Republican speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives is now testifying. He’s detailing a phone call from Trump and Giuliani following the 2020 election in which he was pressured to act to change the state’s vote in the electoral college from Biden to Trump.

The two men claimed that the state’s election was tainted by fraud, to which Bowers demanded evidence.

“Did you ever receive from him that evidence, either during the call, after the call or to this day?” asked Adam Schiff, the Democratic House representative leading the questioning.

“Never,” replied Bowers. Giuliani then came on the call to demand that Bowers “would allow an official committee at the capitol so that they can hear this evidence, and that we can take action thereafter.”

“I refused. I said up to that time that the circus, I called it circus, had been brewing with lots of demonstrations, both in the counting center (and) at the capitol,” Bowers said. “And I didn’t want to have that in the House.”

“Look, you are asking me to do something that is counter to my oath,” Bowers said to their demands that he act to change the state’s vote. “You’re asking me to do something against my oath, and I will not break my oath.”

He voted for Trump and campaigned for Trump

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Giuliani said he had evidence of fraud, but never provided any of of fraud.

And neither did Trump

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Bowers quoting Giuliani: "We have lots of theories, we just don't have the evidence." That's a quote that'll linger.

Per Bower’s retelling, the pressure campaign against him went on for some time, and included calls from those outside the White House.

Andy Biggs, a Republican House representative from Arizona, asked Bowers to support decertifying the Biden electors. “I wouldn’t,” the Arizona speaker said he replied.

“We have no legal pathway, both in state law nor to my knowledge in federal law for us to execute such a request,” Bowers said of his opposition to the demands from Trump’s team, which included reconvening Arizona lawmakers to either reject Biden’s electors or send two lists of electors to Congress. “And I am not allowed to walk or act beyond my authority.”

And just before they took a break he made me cry 😢. But because you have lost your mind. He said that God gave him the strength to do the right thing

Rusty Bowers: Giuliani promised to turn over the names of thousands of dead people who voted — but he couldn't deliver

Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers, a Republican, recalled the White House calling him to pressure him to overturn the 2020 election for the state.

Testifying on Tuesday before the House Select Committee investigating Jan. 6 insurrection, Bowers said that he got a phone call from the White House in which the operator told him to "hold for the president." Rudy Giuliani came on the phone instead. Both he and former President Donald Trump began their pressure campaign to get him to lead a charge to change the 2020 election results.

Bowers recalled Giuliani saying that there were over 200,000 undocumented immigrants who voted and over 5,000 dead people. Bowers said he asked for the proof, for the names, and was assured he would get them, but never did.

He also explained that Trump's claim that he said the election was rigged was an outright lie.

He is a lifetime conservative Republican and a Christian ✝️

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Just now that

The committee is now airing evidence that groups of Trump supporters from several states met after the 2020 election to create “fake electors documents,” which they sent to Washington in an attempt to change their states’ electoral votes from Trump to Biden.

The states included Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Nevada and Wisconsin, and the meetings were done at the request of the Trump campaign. The intention was to submit the documents to vice-president Mike Pence, and the National Archives.

The committee then showed text messages that indicate Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson attempted to get the fake elector documents to Pence. An aide to the vice-president ultimately prevented the documents from reaching him.

Trump biographer Tim O'Brien wrote "Rusty Bowers continues to show what differentiated him (and continues to differentiate him from Giuliani and Trump: They asked him to break the law and be a good Republican. "AZ House Speaker Bowers' fidelity, respect and genuine awe he seems to have for our constitutional political system is inspiring. His heartfelt commitment to our democracy is evident and deeply moving," Prof. Lara Brown wrote.

Conservative writer Tom Nichols wrote, "When you're thinking about coalitions to save democracy: Bowers is a man many liberals will disagree with about everything. The January 6 committee has resumed its hearing, with the focus turning to Brad Raffensperger, Georgia’s secretary of state. As with Bowers before him, Raffensperger begins by confirming his bonafides as a conservative Republican who wanted Trump to win.

Also answering questions is Gabriel Sterling, Raffensperger’s deputy, who went viral for his speech following the election in which he strongly denounced Trump’s baseless insistence that the 2020 election was stolen in Georgia.

Sterling is addressing that speech before the committee, saying it was prompted by direct threats to staff members in his office.

“I lost my temper,” Sterling said. “But it seemed necessary at the time, because it was just getting worse.” He also noted that he’s not aware of any request from Trump to his supporters not to use violence.

Republican gets emotional at Jan. 6 hearing as he recounts horrendous attacks from Trump supporters

Sarah K. Burris

June 21, 2022

Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers, a Republican, explained the harassment and intimidation he and his family endured during the fourth public hearing over the Jan. 6 insurrection on Tuesday.

Bowers testified about the pressure he faced from Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani to reverse his state's results. He mentioned that he has been targeted by Donald Trump's supporters and QAnon after refusing to go along with the scheme.

Bowers said they called him "a pervert and a corrupt politician and blaring loudspeakers in my neighborhood and leaving literature both on my property and arguing and threatening with neighbors and with myself." That has become a key accusation by the right, which has begun falsely alleging anyone they don't like is either a pedophile or is somehow "grooming" children.

He went on to recall a man with a gun who was threatening his neighbor. The man had "three bars on his chest," which indicates he was a member of the Three Percenter militia.

RELATED: Rusty Bowers stuns with Jan. 6 testimony: ‘A genuine profile in courage and integrity’

Bowers mentioned that at the time his daughter was "gravely ill" and was very upset about what she was seeing her parents handle. It was at that point, as he also mentioned his wife, that Bowers began to tear up.

"And my wife was and is a valiant person, very strong, quiet. Very strong woman," he said with a pause. "So, it was disturbing." He paused again. "It was disturbing."

The Jan. 6 committee on Tuesday displayed texts showing a Republican senator's aide seeking to hand-deliver fake election certificates from Michigan and Wisconsin to then-Vice President Mike Pence on Jan. 6.

Why it matters: The text messages underscore the extent to which Republican lawmakers tried to assist former President Trump's efforts infiltrate the counting of electoral votes.

Driving the news: Sean Riley, an aide to Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.), wrote in a text on Jan. 6 to Pence legislative director Chris Hodgson that the Republican senator wanted to hand an "alternate slate of electors for MI and WI because archivist didn't receive them."

"Do not give that to him," the Pence aide wrote back.A spokesperson for Johnson, tweeted that the senator was "not involved.""This was a staff to staff exchange. His new Chief of Staff contacted the Vice President’s office," Johnson spokesperson Alexa Henning said.

Between the lines: Trump also urged Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel to support his efforts to overturn 2020 election results.

"Essentially he turned the call over to [lawyer John Eastman], who then proceeded to talk about the importance of the RNC helping the campaign gather these contingent electors in case any of the legal challenges that were ongoing changed the result of any of the states," McDaniel testified Tuesday during a pre-taped video."I think more just helping them reach out and assemble them, but my understanding is the campaign did take the lead and we just were helping them in that role," McDaniel said.

The big picture: Robert Sinners, a former Trump campaign staffer, told Jan. 6 investigators that the fake elector scheme made him "angry."just like you do

"I’m angry, because I think, in a sense … no one really cared if people were putting themselves in jeopardy," Sinners said."We were just kind of useful idiots or rubes at that point," he said.

Moss and her mother Ruby Freeman are detailing how Trump and Giuliani’s promotion of a conspiracy theory that they somehow rigged the vote has disrupted their lives.

Moss and her mother Ruby Freeman are passing around USB ports “as if they are vials of heroin or cocaine,” Giuliani said in video testimony to the Georgia senate that the committee just played. In reality, Moss testified, what’s shown being passed in that video was a ginger mint. But that allegation started the campaign of attacks by Trump supporters against the mother and daughter.

Moss, who is Black, said people found her Facebook profile and left her “hateful” and “racist” messages, including one saying “Be glad it’s 2020 and 1920.”

“I don’t go to the grocery store at all. I haven’t been anywhere. I gained about 60 pounds,” Moss said of the the threats’ effects on her. “I don’t want to go anywhere. I second-guessed everything that I do.”

After the first recess, the Committee turned to testimony by Raffensperger about his infamous phone call where Trump exhorted him to “find 11,780” votes. Thompson noted that Trump had a particular obsession with Georgia, where the Fulton County District Attorney opened an investigation into his attempt to overturn the election.

Sterling also testified about his press conference warning Trump that agitation over the election would get people killed.

“At this point, we had been steeping in this kind of stuff, so we were around it all the time,” Sterling said.

For Sterling, the “straw that broke the camel’s back” was coming across the threat against a young man that said: “You committed treason. May God have mercy on your soul,” accompanied by a “slowly twisting noose.”

“I just lost it,” Sterling said. “I just got irate.”

Shaye Moss, a Georgia election worker, told the House Jan. 6 panel Tuesday about the harassment campaign she faced after she became a target of Trump and his allies in the wake of the 2020 election.

Moss and her mother, Ruby Freeman, also an elections worker, were baselessly accused by Trump of processing fake ballots for Joe Biden during the late-night hours of Election Day. The two women received death threats and racist harassment to the point that they were forced to relocate.

Moss told the committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol that she had been a proud election worker, because her grandmother had taught her that the right to vote is “precious.”

Moss said none of the claims Trump and his lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, made about her and her mother are true. The panel played a video of Giuliani claiming that the two women, as they worked on counting Georgia votes, were “surreptitiously passing around USB ports as if they’re vials of heroin or cocaine.” Giuliani baselessly accused them of being “engaged in surreptitious illegal activity again that day.”

Moss emotionally recalled how it felt to hear those false accusations from Giuliani. She was called into a meeting with her higher-ups, who showed her video that Giuliani claimed showed her stuffing ballots illegally, when she was doing no such thing.

“The first thing I said was: ‘Why? Why are they doing this?’” Moss said.

Then the harassment began. She was told to check on her mother, and social media.

“A lot of threats wishing death upon me, telling me that … I’ll be in jail with my mother and saying things like, ‘Be glad it’s 2020 and not 1920,’” Moss recalled. “A lot of them were racist, a lot of them were just hateful.”

The panel then played audio of Trump attacking Moss and her mother by name 18 times.

“I felt horrible, I felt like it was all my fault,” Moss said. “I just felt bad for my mom, and I felt horrible for picking this job.”

Russell “Rusty” Bowers, the Republican speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives, repeatedly paused in an apparent effort to compose himself during his testimony Tuesday, as he described the consequences of refusing to violate his oath of office by declaring Donald Trump the winner of the 2020 presidential election.

Trump and his lawyers were central to the intense pressure campaign on Bowers once it had become apparent that Joe Biden had won several key states, including Arizona. In the last weeks of his presidency, Trump leaned on a number of state officials, trying to convince them to state publicly that election fraud had invalidated Biden’s win, but they refused. Bowers was among them, as he testified at the fourth public hearing held by the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“There was no ― no evidence being presented of any strength ... anything that would say to me, ‘You have a doubt. Deny your oath.’ I will not do that,” Bowers said of Trump’s fraud claims.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

This is the coldheartedtruth .

I fear we may have lost the ability to recognize a true emergency.

Fortunately for the truth, Bowers proved to be one of the most compelling witnesses to testify before Congress in many years.

The other witnesses were also excellent.

Georgia election official Gabriel Sterling painstakingly debunked some of the conspiracy theories that followed Joe Biden’s election victory in the state — most of them pushed by Trump himself. But despite overwhelming evidence the theories weren’t true, Sterling testified that it was hard to get people to believe him.

Said Sterling: “It was kind of like a shovel trying to empty the ocean. It was frustrating. I even have family members who I had to argue with about some of these things, and I would show them things, and the problem you have is you’re getting to people’s hearts.”

He added: “Once you get past the heart, the facts don’t matter as much.”

Georgia election worker Shaye Moss, recounted the abuse that she and her mother, Ruby Freeman, received from Trump supporters. Rudy Giuliani compared Moss to “a low-level drug dealer.” Trump himself falsely accused Freeman of being “a professional vote scammer and hustler.”

Moss recounted the death threats and unending harassment they received. Freeman was even told by the FBI to leave her home for two months because they feared for her safety.

It was truly upsetting and horrific.

But as powerful as today’s hearing was, I’m increasingly worried that we have become numb to the precedent-shattering criminality from Donald Trump and his allies. With alarm bells ringing for so many years, I fear we may have lost the ability to recognize a true emergency.

It was the strongest hearing 💪 so far

The threats of violence is unacceptable 😑

What they're saying: After then-Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani released a video claiming Moss and her mother Ruby Freeman were colluding to commit voter fraud, the two Black women became targets of threats and hateful messages, many of which were racist, Moss testified.

"A lot of threats wishing death upon me. Telling me that, you know, I'll be in jail with my mother and saying things like, 'Be glad it's 2020 and not 1920."At one point, Trump supporters showed up at her grandmother's home and attempted to push their way through the door, Moss said."This woman is my everything. I've never even heard her or seen her cry ever in my life, and she called me screaming at the top of her lungs ... [They claimed] they were coming in to make a citizen's arrest. They needed to find me and my mom.""I felt horrible," said Moss, who had earlier told the committee she pursued her job in part because she recognized that voting hadn't been an option for her forebears."It's turned my life upside down. I no longer give out my business card. I don't transfer calls. I don't want anyone knowing my name," she said. "I've gained about 60 pounds. I just don't do nothing anymore. I don't want to go anywhere. I second-guess everything that I do.""It's affected my life in a major way. In every way. All because of lies. For me doing my job. Same thing I've been doing forever."

Her mother had to leave her home for two months after the FBI issued a warning about her safety being compromised. In a clip aired at the hearing, Freeman told the committee that she has lost her "sense of security."

"Now I won't even introduce myself by my name anymore. I get nervous when I bump into someone I know in the grocery store who says my name. I'm worried about who is listening. I get nervous when I have to give my name for food orders .... I've lost my name and I've lost my reputation."

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The committee made much of the fact that its witnesses are Republicans who wanted Trump to win. Raffensperger, for example, described himself today as a conservative Republican who wanted Trump to win in 2020. He said he had to “follow the law and follow the Constitution.”

Clearly, one of the purposes of the committee hearings is to fortify those remaining Republican officials and lawmakers around the country who continue to honor their oaths of office. The committee’s strategy underscores the stark reality that, no matter how much Democrats revile Trump, it is Republicans who will ultimately decide his fate — and whether Trump remains a force in American politics.

But you will never concede failure.

Most people don't care about the legal ramifications but they are very embarrassed and thinks hearings might change minds.

The committee Tuesday highlighted the threats of violence and intimidation against those who refused to go along with the scheme. Newly revealed video, for instance, showed that before he was one of the most famous faces of the January 6 insurrection, the "QAnon Shaman" Jacob Chansley, showed up in Arizona in order to intimidate election officials there.

Raffensperger and Bowers testified to threats to their families. Sterling spoke of how infuriated he became in the face of the non-stop intimidation from Trump supporters. Wandrea "Shay" Moss' testimony demonstrated how personal and ugly this can get. Moss is just an everyday elections worker who became the centerpiece of a racist conspiracy theory accusing her of faking votes in Georgia. She's a private citizen, but because video of her counting ballots were circulated as "evidence" of Trump's lies, she's been subject to an unbelievable amount of threats and harassment.

Things have only gotten worse in the year and a half since then.

The Trumpy candidate in Missouri's Senate race, Eric Greitens, is running a campaign ad threatening to "hunt" so-called "RINOs," which is a slur word commonly applied to Republicans who publicly reject the Big Lie. Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Texas is about as far-right as they come, but because he refuses to agree to the Big Lie, he was harassed at the Texas GOP convention with insults borrowed from Tucker Carlson. While a few hundred of the people who stormed the Capitol have been arrested, polls show that 70% of Republicans are now on their side, claiming to believe the Big Lie. A significant percentage can and will be tapped to use tactics of violence and intimidation against any election officials who might stand against Trump in the future.

"We cannot let America become a nation of conspiracy theories and thug violence," Cheney declared during her opening statement. But that's exactly the path the country is on, as Tuesday's hearing showed. Trump hasn't faced any legal penalities for his crimes. Worse, most of GOP has rallied to Trump's side, ready to make the state-by-state strategy of falsifying votes and sending fake electors work next time around. Tuesday's hearing documented a strategy that Trump developed that now has metastasized to the entire Republican party. If more isn't done to protect elections on the state level, the next time Trump attempts a coup, it's likely to succeed.

The polls might change their minds about Trump but not the President Biden.

Jan. 6 panel reveals evidence that Trump was directly involved in a plan to put forward fake electors.
WASHINGTON — Former President Donald J. Trump was directly involved in a scheme to put forward slates of false pro-Trump electors in states won by Joseph R. Biden Jr., the committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol revealed Tuesday during a hearing delving into Mr. Trump’s pressure campaign on state officials to help him invalidate his defeat.

The committee played deposition video from Ronna McDaniel, the Republican National Committee chairwoman, who testified that Mr. Trump had personally called her about helping further the scheme. Mr. Trump put the conservative lawyer John Eastman on the phone with Ms. McDaniel “to talk about the importance of the R.N.C. helping the campaign gather these contingent electors,” she testified.

The revelation came during the fourth of the panel’s hearings this month, in which Republican officials from Arizona and Georgia testified that Mr. Trump clung to claims of election fraud that he knew — or should have known — were false, relentlessly pressured them to embrace the lies and overturn the election results, and knowingly put them at risk when they refused to go along.

The Tuesday hearing could bolster calls for Trump to be charged over his role in inciting the deadly January 6 insurrection. According to a new ABC News/Ipsos poll, 58% of Americans now believe that Trump should face criminal charges in connection to the Capitol attack.

Schiff made a point of underscoring the ongoing threats facing American democracy in the wake of the January 6 insurrection.

“If the most powerful person in the world can bring the full weight of the presidency down on an ordinary citizen who is merely doing her job, with a lie as big and heavy as a mountain, who among us is safe? None of us is,” Schiff said.

“Our democracy held because courageous people like those you heard from today put their oath to the constitution above their loyalty to one man or to one party. The system held, but barely. And the question remains: will it hold again?”

So the gang that can’t shoot straight’s Build Back Better is a steaming pile of shit thanks to Dementia Joe’s inflation and is exacerbating the problem.

The smear gained further traction after the publication of Trump’s infamous phone call with former Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R), whom the 45th president urged to “find 11,780” votes. Trump invoked Freeman’s name on that tape no fewer than 19 times, referring to her as “a vote scammer, a professional vote scammer and hustler.”

Trump rattled off various debunked conspiracy theories about the Georgia election, including his false claim that the mother and daughter used a water main break as an excuse to wheel in fraudulent ballots.

Raffensperger debunked the theories point-by-point during his testimony, where he testified that Trump’s pressure campaign sparked “sexualized” threats against his wife and a break-in at his daughter-in-law’s home.

The committee's fourth public hearing began at 1 p.m. ET Tuesday.

The hearing featured two panels of witnesses.

The hearing focused on the plot to pressure state officials to overturn valid election results, including how the Trump campaign drove a scheme to get "fake electors" transmitted to Washington, D.C.

The lawmakers said that despite the fact President Trump was warned, his false claims risked violence and undermining democracy.

The hearing did inject a new mystery into the scheme: that of Sen. Ron Johnson’s (R-WI) role.

The committee revealed a text exchange between Ron Johnson’s Chief of Staff Sean Riley and Chris Hodgson, a Pence aide.

In the texts, Riley said that Sen. Johnson wanted to give Pence “alternate slates of electors” for Wisconsin and Michigan “because archivist receive them.”

“Do not give that to him,” Hodgson replied.

It’s a piece of evidence which suggests that the plan to feed alternate electors to Pence may have had support from within the Senate.

Appearing before the House committee investigating last year’s attack on the Capitol, the Republican election officials said Trump’s team, led by the president himself, made fantastic allegations of voter fraud — all of them false — and asked numerous state figures to break the law to keep Trump in power despite his clear defeat.

“The numbers are the numbers, and the number’s don’t lie,” said Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, whom Trump had pressed to “find” 11,780 votes — the number that would have made him the winner in that state.

Raffensperger noted that three separate recount efforts in the Peach State all found Joe Biden to be the winner by a “remarkably” similar margin.

“What I knew is we didn’t have any more votes to find,” he said.

Their testimony provided the latest affirmation of the select committee’s central accusation against the former president: Trump had abused the powers of the White House to promote a lie — that the election was stolen — and nullify the wishes of voters in several key states where the margins were slimmest. It was that campaign, in the committee’s telling, that led directly to the violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Scott you don't recognize the danger of Trump.

It is widely seen that the U.S. House Select Committee about January 6 is falling flat. See, e.g., Breitbart’s article, “January 6 Committee’s Third Hearing So Boring NBC Cut to Golf Instead.” (For golf to be more interesting, it’s bad.)

What’s more amazing is that no clue has penetrated the fog of Democrats, establishment Republicans, the news media, or far-left activists about why. Our political class is so out of touch that it could not see this collective yawn coming.

And no, this is not about interviewing that one magic witness. It is the fundamental concept of their entire effort that the American people see through like a windowpane. There are no additional witnesses or documents that can save an enterprise doomed from the start.

First, the Committee is convincing us that this is only a political disagreement. Trump and his leadership team and MAGA voters are “guilty” of having incorrect political views and committing “wrongthink.” (I encourage all to re-read George Orwell’s 1984.) The Committee is trying to prove that Trump was just wrong.

The Committee is violating the First Amendment constitutional rights of millions of Americans, including by chilling, intimidating, and frightening U.S. citizens from expressing their political views. You are not allowed to believe that the 2000, er, 2016, er, 2020 presidential election was stolen — as Al Gore and then Jill Stein claimed.

Other than running up the body count of witnesses, the Committee is clearly obsessed with criminalizing political differences. But “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech.” Congress has no valid legislative purpose to cut the First Amendment out of the Constitution.

Second, the left-wing conspiracy theory of a January 6 “insurrection” could work only if people don’t think about it too much. The public hearings make the fundamental mistake of getting the American people to actually focus on and think about this. The more people pay attention, the more it has dawned on or soon will dawn on them that the narrative makes no sense

Harvard Law prof calls upon Merrick Garland to charge Trump under mob racketeering law

Bob Brigham

June 21, 2022

One of America's leading constitutional law experts called upon Attorney General Merrick Garland to prosecute Trump under racketeering laws designed to combat the mafia.

Laurence Tribe, professor emeritus at Harvard Law School, has argued three-dozen cases before the United State's Supreme Court and taught constitutional law for over half a century. Tribe taught Garland at Harvard Law, where he also taught Barack Obama, Supreme Court Justice John Roberts along with Jan. 6 select committee members Jaime Raskin (D-MD) and Adam Schiff (D-CA).

"Today’s hearing makes clearer than ever how deeply Trump and his acolytes have already damaged democracy at the ground level, driving honest election workers into hiding and creating a vacuum that fascists are in the process of filling," Tribe said.

Tribe noted a quote from former FBI Assistant Director Frank Figliuzzi on MSNBC.

"This is all looking increasingly like a kind of criminal enterprise. Trump at the head, almost a capo of an organized crime family," Figliuzzi said.

"Almost?" Tribe asked.

"This calls for RICO charges," he said.

The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act was "passed by Congress with the declared purpose of seeking to eradicate organized crime in the United States," the DOJ explains.

"It is unlawful for anyone employed by or associated with any enterprise engaged in, or the activities of which affect, interstate or foreign commerce, to conduct or participate, directly or indirectly, in the conduct of such enterprise's affairs through a pattern of racketeering activity or collection of unlawful debt," the DOJ said.

Tribe listed a number of prominent names in the conspiracy, including RNC Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel along with attorneys John Eastman, Rudy Giuliani, Jenna Ellis, and Kenneth Chesebro.

Or that somehow it was illegal to use your first amendment rights to express that opinion!

Should NOBODY be allowed to voice and opinion for fear that it will "incite" people to call for violence? Every person who stands out in front a Justices home and protest IS BREAKING THE LAW! Any threats are a felony.

Yet... you don't seem to have a problem with Schumer and Pelosi and Biden inciting this violence with their criminal actions of expressing a FALSE viewpoint that the Justice are wrong...

When in fact, it's 100% proven fact that the Justice are 100% right and 0% wrong!

What do you think Roger?

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Sorry Scott but you refused to believe this second paragraph because.....???

The effort to organize counterfeit electors was one part of a broader campaign by the just-defeated president to cling to power.

But, according to the committee, it demonstrated Trump's willingness to use any means — regardless of their legality — to reverse the will of voters. Trump's team turned to the "fake electors" plan when it became clear that state officials in Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania and other key battlegrounds would not overturn the results in their states and replace Biden electors with Trump electors.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Although the Jan. 6 committee has been unable to show that Donald Trump was directly responsible for the attack on the Capitol, they have come close enough to make it a serious question. Although Mr. Trump’s tweet attacking Vice President Pence for rebuffing his demands on Jan. 6 seems to have enraged the demonstrators and sent them into the Capitol, it is probably too ambiguous on the question of incitement to be the foundation of a criminal charge.

There may be many reasons not to try a former president for an ambiguously supported offense, but in the court of public opinion the outcome will be clear: Mr. Trump knew before he left the presidency that he had lost the 2020 election, and has falsely stated the opposite to the American people every day thereafter.

The fact that some of his strongest and most devoted supporters, because they believed him,  are now in jail – or see jail time in their future – is only the most obvious example of the disappointments many Republican voters will feel over the next two years as they examine the destructiveness of  Mr. Trump’s post-presidency conduct.

This should not be underestimated. As Republicans realize what Mr. Trump has done – that in lying to his supporters he showed contempt for them – they will gradually abandon their support for him. Like most Americans, they respond to information when they see it as credible and unbiased. The polls, then, will begin to show a decline in the percentage of Republicans who say they want Mr. Trump to be their 2024 nominee, and other potential 2024 candidates, such as Florida Gov. DeSantis, will begin to show increasing strength.

WASHINGTON (AP) — New footage of former President Donald Trump and his inner circle taken both before and after Jan. 6, 2021, is now in the possession of the House committee investigating the deadly attack on the Capitol.

The revelation of the never-before-seen footage came to light Tuesday amidst the committee’s public hearings when British filmmaker Alex Holder revealed he had complied with a congressional subpoena to turn over all of the footage he shot in the final weeks of Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign.

“When we began this project in September 2020, we could have never predicted that our work would one day be subpoenaed by Congress,” Holder wrote in a statement on Twitter.

The filmmaker said the footage includes exclusive interviews with Trump, his children and then-Vice President Mike Pence while on the campaign trail as well as before and after the insurrection on the Capitol.

The first senior leaders of the Trump campaign heard about the documentary was Tuesday morning when the project was first reported by Politico, according to two former officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the group’s reaction.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The news of the footage also came as members of the committee held its fourth public hearing, this time focused on how Trump’s relentless pressure to overturn the 2020 presidential election led to widespread threats against local election workers and state officials.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., one of the members of the panel, told reporters Tuesday afternoon that he had been contacted personally by a person who had knowledge of the footage and that is when the committee decided to issue its subpoena.

“I’ve not seen it yet but I know it exists,” Raskin said.

The footage is the second time the committee will be leaning on documentary footage from that day to gather evidence for its sprawling, nearly year-long investigation. The first public hearing in early June featured testimony from Nick Quested, another British filmmaker, who was embedded with the Proud Boys in the weeks after Trump lost the 2020 election.

The statement from Holder also stated that he will be going before the committee to provide testimony on Thursday.

Before this is done, someone might have the guts to be like Barry Goldwater

QUICK FACTS:The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Homeland Security Bureau (HSB), and Special Operations Division (SOD) issued a report on Jan. 3, 2021, about potential demonstrations on Jan. 6 of the same year.Reports reviewed by journalists investigating the issue showed that the MPD began to activate Civil Disturbance Unit (CDU) platoons on Jan. 4, 2021.There were a total of 28 platoons scheduled to work over the next two days, including during the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol Hill disturbances. The stated objective of the groups was to assist with the demonstrations’ legal execution of their rights to demonstrate and to monitor potential illegal activity.

Speculation has arisen that federal agents and Capitol Police were not only present but involved in instigating and encouraging the violence that took place that the protests.

Trump has turned the GOP into a national terrorist party.

The democracy America has cultivated for 230 years is slipping away, leaving us in danger of becoming a system in which political differences and elections are not resolved by the rule of law but “decided in the streets,” as Greg Jacob, former vice president Mike Pence’s chief counsel, put it in his testimony about the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.

We didn’t arrive at this precarious moment solely because of Trwump. Trump couldn’t have happened if Fox News and Republican elites hadn’t normalized his threats to democratic traditions. Now they continue to do so with their breezy dismissal of the breathtaking revelations of the Jan. 6 hearings.

The conservative elites surely know we are moving toward instability and violence. Yet rather than grapple with the threat, they excuse Trump’s lawlessness once more by resorting to tribalism: There’s nothing new here. The needle isn’t moving.

k at a rally at the Lorain County Fairgrounds in Wellington, Ohio, on June 26. (Jabin Botsford/The Washington Post)
It has gone from bad to worse for former president Donald Trump in Georgia, The Post’s Aaron Blake writes.
Per Aaron:
Last month, Trump’s candidates were drubbed statewide in the Peach State, starting with former senator David Perdue’s massive loss to Gov. Brian Kemp and Rep. Jody Hice’s remarkably failed bid to unseat Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. (Trump’s candidate for attorney general also lost.)
Congressional candidates Vernon Jones and Jake Evans each fell, piling onto Trump’s losses. Adding insult to injury, Jones was defeated by Kemp-endorsed businessman Mike Collins. Each trailed by a Perdue-esque margin, with their opponents winning more than 74 percent of the vote.
Neither result was too surprising, perhaps apart from the margin. But together, they reinforced how little regard Georgia Republicans have for Trump’s status as a kingmaker — and that Trump’s backing by itself is still only good for about 25-30 percent of the vote.

The entire “tick tock” narrative that followed was brought to you (mostly) by Fox News and Bill Barr.

CNN has smallest weekday audience among advertiser-coveted demo in 22 years
Struggling CNN averaged only 56,000 viewers between ages 25-54 on Friday

CNN had its smallest audience in 22 years on Friday among the demographic most coveted by advertisers as the network continued its ongoing struggle to attract viewers.

CNN averaged only 56,000 viewers between ages 25-54 on June 17. The last time CNN had a smaller turnout among the critical category was July 10, 2000.

Friday was also CNN’s smallest weekday audience among total viewers since June 2014, as the network settled for only 283,000 average viewers. By comparison, Fox News averaged 1.4 million total viewers and 209,000 in the key demo. It was Fox News' largest advantage over CNN since August 6, 2015.

NPR visits a swing district -- and much to its surprise, learns that voters don't care about Dems' Jan. 6 hearings

Someone at NPR came up with the idea of finding out what voters are thinking in the swing districts, now that the Democrats' Jan. 6 spectacular, starring Liz Cheney, is in full throttle.

Oops.

To say the least, the prim Victorian-gentlemen leftists at that award-laden outfit were in for a surprise:

President Biden will on Wednesday today all on Congress to suspend the federal gas tax for three months, ask states to do the same and demand that oil and gas companies boost production and pass on any savings directly to consumers, according to administration officials.

Think they’ll suspend it from the wellhead or just at the pump?

MSNBC, WaPo, ABC figures warn voters against gas prices influencing their vote in November

Some media pundits worried that gas prices, inflation will dominate midterm concerns

The lowest price for gasoline I remember was $0.19.9 in Rapid City in 1971! The gasoline station was destroyed in the June 9th 1972 Rapid City 500 year flood.

President Biden will ask Congress on Wednesday to suspend the federal gas tax through September, a move that could shave off 18 cents per gallon to help consumers battling record prices at the pump, senior administration officials said.

The request to suspend the gas tax comes as Biden and Democrats are facing a tough midterm election season as Americans are confronting high fuel costs, spiking inflation and fears of a recession. It is not clear if Biden can persuade Republicans in the Senate to go along with the gas tax holiday.

Death threats prompted Georgia poll worker Ruby Freeman to leave her home for two months after Donald Trump falsely said she inserted fraudulent ballots into the 2020 election. Georgia’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, said people who believed Trump’s lies broke into his widowed daughter-in-law’s home. The top Republican in Arizona’s State House described crowds outside of his home harrassing his family while they were caring for his “gravely ill” daughter inside.

Committee members are planning to hold at least three more hearings. The next one is scheduled for Thursday and will examine Trump’s efforts to get the Department of Justice behind his attempted coup. Later hearings will look at the extremist groups that stormed the Capitol, such as the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers, and go over the 187 minutes of the Capitol riot in detail.

Rep. Adam Schiff, a California Democrat who handled much of the questioning during Tuesday’s hearing, said those who testified deserved praise for showing courage and putting “their oath to the Constitution above their loyalty to one man or to one party.”

“The system held,” Schiff said, “but barely.”

Democrats Announce 'January 6 Hearings On Ice'

WASHINGTON, D.C.—As ratings continue to fizzle for the January 6th hearings, Democrats are trying a new format to bring the committee's scandalous findings to a wider audience.

"We are proud, so proud, to announce January 6th On Ice," said Pelosi while attempting to squeeze into a silver leotard. "We invite parents and children of all ages to come witness this delightful spectacle as my colleagues and I dance to delightful musical numbers and spin our narrative as we spin on the ice!"

The show will take place on a rink of frozen tears supplied by AOC herself, and will feature the talents of Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, and Adam Schiff, as he comically attempts to stay upright under the weight of his large watermelon-shaped head.

Democrats hope the new show will give more Americans a chilling picture of just how evil Trump and his supporters are.

At publishing time, the show had to be put on hold after every member of the committee slipped and broke their hips within the first 5 minutes of the first performance.
